BREAKING: Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin among actresses, CEOs charged in alleged college admissions scam

BOSTON -- Actresses and chief executives are among 50 people arrested in a nationwide college admissions cheating scam, authorities announced Tuesday.

According to charging documents, actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin are among those involved facing charges.

The suspects allegedly paid bribes of up to $6 million to get their kids into elite colleges, including Yale, Stanford, Georgetown and USC.

In most cases, the students did not know their admission was contingent on a bribe.

University athletic coaches and administrators of college entrance exams were also among those arrested.

The alleged scam centered around a man in California who ran a business helping students get into the college of their choice.

Authorities say parents would pay him a predetermined amount, with full knowledge of what they were doing. He would then steer the money to one of two places: either an SAT or ACT administrator, or a college athletic coach.

The coaches would allegedly arrange a fake profile that listed the prospective student as an athlete, and exam administrators would either hire proctors to take the test or correct the answers of a student.

The bribes ranged from a few thousand dollars to up to 6 million, according to officials. The charging documents, unsealed in Boston federal court, are more than 200 pages long.

They allege that Huffman and her husband "made a purported charitable contribution of $15,000...to participate in the college entrance exam cheating scheme on behalf of her eldest daughter. Huffman later made arrangements to pursue the scheme a second time, for her younger daughter, before deciding not to do so."

Federal agents say they have recorded telephone calls with Huffman and a cooperating witness.

The documents say the Loughlin and her husband "agreed to pay bribes totaling $500,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team -- despite the fact that they did not participate in crew -- thereby facilitating their admission to USC."

Official say they have emails from Loughlin.

But Lori had to look at John Stamos's fucked up navel.

by Anonymousreply 1March 12, 2019 2:47 PM

If Jake Ryan were real, this is what his parents would do to make sure he was in an elite college.

by Anonymousreply 2March 12, 2019 2:47 PM

Where did Lori Loughlin get that much money?

by Anonymousreply 3March 12, 2019 2:48 PM

I suppose it was cheaper than buying the college of their choice a new building.

[quote]The bribes ranged from a few thousand dollars to up to 6 million,

$6 million?! Who the fuck would pay that and why? Even if your crotch dropping graduates Magna Cum Laude from the best school, you’ll never recoup $6 million!

by Anonymousreply 6March 12, 2019 2:49 PM

Also isn't Felicity Huffman's "husband" William H Macy??? Why don't they name him? He's arguably more famous than these two

by Anonymousreply 7March 12, 2019 2:50 PM

R3 she’s been acting for years and married a rich man.

by Anonymousreply 8March 12, 2019 2:50 PM

Typical rich people behavior.

Slap on the wrist, if even that much.

by Anonymousreply 9March 12, 2019 2:51 PM

This is the part I don't understand. Why would the corrupt test adminitrators need to know the student is an athlete before arranging a proctor to correct the answers?

by Anonymousreply 10March 12, 2019 2:51 PM

r6 = Jared Kushner's dad.

by Anonymousreply 11March 12, 2019 2:52 PM

R7 that's a good point. Until you mentioned it, I forgot he was her husband.

by Anonymousreply 12March 12, 2019 2:54 PM

R10 Maybe if they were an athlete, the proctors wouldn't have to change as many wrong answers? An athlete could get a lower SAT score than a non athlete and still get admitted to the school. Idk.

by Anonymousreply 13March 12, 2019 2:56 PM

Because college athletics is HUGE business and they tend to overlook a LOT of things if the student is an “athlete.”

by Anonymousreply 14March 12, 2019 2:57 PM

LOCK ‘EM UP!

by Anonymousreply 15March 12, 2019 2:59 PM

Right, IDing the student as an athlete would mean lowering the bar to admission.

by Anonymousreply 16March 12, 2019 2:59 PM

Full Jailhouse

by Anonymousreply 17March 12, 2019 3:01 PM

Thank you, R11. I was about to mention that shithead (and his equally stupid brother). Even the HS he went to was shocked when Jared got in because that's how unqualified he was to get into Harvard. And the fact that such a total scumbag has so much power to destroy this country and foreign policy, is just horrific.

This is why I get pissed off at assholes who get angrier at some underprivileged black kid getting in, because it's not like the black kid is some D student being given a break. It's more likely he's an A- or B+student, but these people are allowing dumb, rich white kids to get into the Ivy when they have no being there business at all.

by Anonymousreply 18March 12, 2019 3:01 PM

Despicable.

by Anonymousreply 19March 12, 2019 3:02 PM

oops:

have no business being there at all.*

by Anonymousreply 20March 12, 2019 3:03 PM

Perhaps felicity pulled this scam behind Bill’s back which is why he wasn’t charged

by Anonymousreply 21March 12, 2019 3:04 PM

Actors. The educational establishment is unknown to them. They didn't know how to properly maneuver. Name a building when your son is applying. Duh.

by Anonymousreply 22March 12, 2019 3:07 PM

They have physical evidence on Felicity, not Macy.

by Anonymousreply 23March 12, 2019 3:07 PM

Tweet them to shreds. This is unconscionable.

by Anonymousreply 24March 12, 2019 3:07 PM

Lori Loughlin will be remembered for Full House.

Bitch ain't going to the big house.

by Anonymousreply 25March 12, 2019 3:08 PM

Mug shots!

by Anonymousreply 26March 12, 2019 3:08 PM

They are rich while people, they will get fines and probation

by Anonymousreply 27March 12, 2019 3:09 PM

Epic fail, R27

by Anonymousreply 28March 12, 2019 3:09 PM

[quote] Because college athletics is HUGE business and they tend to overlook a LOT of things if the student is an “athlete.”

I was a professor at a D1 school, and have seen the process from the inside. Still the story doesn't make sense.

by Anonymousreply 29March 12, 2019 3:10 PM

Has Teri Hatcher made a statement yet?

by Anonymousreply 30March 12, 2019 3:11 PM

Has Joel Crothers issued a statement yet?

by Anonymousreply 33March 12, 2019 3:13 PM

Guess felicity didn't love her second kid as much as the first. Community college for that one!

by Anonymousreply 36March 12, 2019 3:14 PM

I want to know who the fuck paid 6 million dollars?!?

by Anonymousreply 37March 12, 2019 3:15 PM

I always knew Felicity was up herself.

by Anonymousreply 38March 12, 2019 3:15 PM

"UCLA? Can't even get into a fucking state school?! LOLOLOLOLOL fucking retards!"

UCLA is very hard to get into for out-of-state students

by Anonymousreply 39March 12, 2019 3:15 PM

Maybe she realized she was breaking the law and decided not to do it a second time, who knows.

by Anonymousreply 40March 12, 2019 3:16 PM

I think the problem was faking a profile and hiring someone to take tests etc.

Jared didn't. That dumb fuck and brother had their dad donate millions to get into Harvard and NYU Law (Jared). That's how to do it. these actresses are really stupid.

by Anonymousreply 41March 12, 2019 3:16 PM

I mean, it's not that difficult! Just ask any of those places that help you decide which college etc...they will just tell you to donate a sum and you will get in.

I knew so many rich foreign students whose parents donated money.

by Anonymousreply 42March 12, 2019 3:18 PM

Oh my, how stupid can you be? How can you say you played a sport when you didn't?! That shit stays with you forever, you will never get hired afterwards, that is provided that they have enough brain power to graduate. Probably paid others to do their essays etc.

by Anonymousreply 43March 12, 2019 3:20 PM

I expected better of Felicity.

by Anonymousreply 44March 12, 2019 3:22 PM

Has the Hallmark Channel released a statement yet? Does this jeopardize the future of When Calls the Heart?

by Anonymousreply 45March 12, 2019 3:22 PM

There was always something shifty about that bitch. I got her number when she tried to steal my show.

by Anonymousreply 46March 12, 2019 3:25 PM

They mention Macy, just not by name:

[quote]They allege that Huffman and her husband "made a purported charitable contribution of $15,000...to participate in the college entrance exam cheating scheme on behalf of her eldest daughter.

by Anonymousreply 47March 12, 2019 3:25 PM

As for Loughlin, she and her husband -- Mossimo Giannulli, the founder of Mossimo clothing -- allegedly paid $500,000 to have their 2 daughters designated as recruits for the crew team at USC ... despite the fact they did not actually participate in crew. Mossimo was also charged in the indictment.

by Anonymousreply 50March 12, 2019 3:26 PM

Hollywood actors aren't educated. They don't understand the system and how to pay to play the correct way.

by Anonymousreply 51March 12, 2019 3:26 PM

I love this stuff. So many will be swept up and shamed.

by Anonymousreply 52March 12, 2019 3:27 PM

r51, most of the people who were indicted aren't actors.

by Anonymousreply 53March 12, 2019 3:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 54March 12, 2019 3:29 PM

by Anonymousreply 55March 12, 2019 3:29 PM

That's right. If any cast member is caught eating a shiitake, they risk being released from their contract.

by Anonymousreply 56March 12, 2019 3:30 PM

College admissions need to be more transparent, with less favor for soft variables.

by Anonymousreply 57March 12, 2019 3:30 PM

Paying others to take the exams.

by Anonymousreply 58March 12, 2019 3:30 PM

Solid cases but they won't get time. A fine maybe. Community service maybe. Rich white women after all.

by Anonymousreply 59March 12, 2019 3:31 PM

I disagree about this being out of character for Felicity; this was such a Lynette thing to do.

by Anonymousreply 60March 12, 2019 3:31 PM

Yale and Stanford wow.

Harvard's not implicated. Yet.

by Anonymousreply 61March 12, 2019 3:32 PM

by Anonymousreply 62March 12, 2019 3:32 PM

by Anonymousreply 66March 12, 2019 3:34 PM

Even Pimp Mama Kris Jenner is above doing this.

by Anonymousreply 67March 12, 2019 3:34 PM

Loughlin paid $500,000 for two kids. Wow.

by Anonymousreply 68March 12, 2019 3:34 PM

Lori's kids must be pretty stupid if she paid $500k for USC.

by Anonymousreply 69March 12, 2019 3:34 PM

9 coaches "at elite schools" and 33 parents

by Anonymousreply 70March 12, 2019 3:35 PM

Trump and his children transferred in to Penn. Trump's father went to Penn. It's not hard to understand how that happened. It's only surprising that they didn't take Ivanka outright. Didn't she have to transfer in from Georgetown? I went to grad school at one of the top Ivies, and the legacy admits (undergrad) are almost all average students. That's just the way it is.

You're misreading the article you quoted. They would either pay a proctor off for the test OR pay a coach off for a fake verification of their sports achievements.

by Anonymousreply 93March 12, 2019 3:44 PM

This is AWESOME! Gotta love the justice system when it (so rarely) goes after the rich.

by Anonymousreply 97March 12, 2019 3:45 PM

by Anonymousreply 98March 12, 2019 3:45 PM

It must suck for Huffman and Loughlin to not have enough fame or talent to get their kids in on name power alone!

by Anonymousreply 99March 12, 2019 3:46 PM

We're like Latin America now. Total stratification.

by Anonymousreply 100March 12, 2019 3:46 PM

These fucking rich assholes. Like rich people don’t already buy their kids’ way into the most elite schools. The system was already rigged and has been for years, before this scam. This is disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 101March 12, 2019 3:47 PM

Guaranteed they come out of these schools and go on to try to be models, actresses and social media influencers.

by Anonymousreply 104March 12, 2019 3:48 PM

So not only did these people bribe coaches and scam their kids’s way into schools but they deducted the payments from their taxes? Slimy greedy fuckers.

by Anonymousreply 105March 12, 2019 3:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 109March 12, 2019 3:52 PM

I worked at Brown University in their Alum and Devel IT Unit. If you want to ensure your kid get in you make a large donation to their annual fund. All neat and tidy.

by Anonymousreply 110March 12, 2019 3:52 PM

Rich kids already game the system with expensive SAT coaching sessions (that poor and middle class students can’t afford) and now this is just icing on the cake.

by Anonymousreply 111March 12, 2019 3:53 PM

R75 What is she trying to influence, people to buy tranny make-up and orthopedic platform shoes to wear with a nightie?

by Anonymousreply 113March 12, 2019 3:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 114March 12, 2019 3:55 PM

"I got into UCLA and I was an out of state student with better than average grades, some extra-curricular activities but nothing spectacular."

When was this? Because it's harder than ever to get into top colleges.

by Anonymousreply 116March 12, 2019 3:55 PM

I got into my college of choice -- sort of. The school offered an INTENSE liberal arts two year program and upon successful completion one could transfer into the final two years of a preferred major/division.

The first two years were brutal; many of us were barely hanging on and I remember one girl saying: "I mean, we'll GIVE them the money - can't they just let us graduate?"

by Anonymousreply 117March 12, 2019 3:56 PM

Do we have names yet? Besides Singer and the two actresses? I need the names of all these fuckers.

by Anonymousreply 122March 12, 2019 3:59 PM

I'm watching Felicity on Netflix in "American Crime" (with Connor Jessup). She plays the headmaster of an elite high school who is, in part, in charge of admissions. She's incredibly good in that role, so very talented.

But it reminds me of what Glenda Jackson said about playing King Lear: Human nature is immutable. Donald Trump is a liar and a cheat, and lots of people who hate Donald Trump are liars and cheats. We're all fighting the same impulses. For centuries. It's never going to end.

by Anonymousreply 123March 12, 2019 3:59 PM

What makes this story even worse is that DESERVING KIDS WHO EARNED THOSE SPOTS DIDN’T GET IN. So rich parents essentially STOLE an education from someone else’s kid.

by Anonymousreply 144March 12, 2019 4:06 PM

As punishment the kids should be required to attend Hudson University.

I'm happy they are going to finally face justice. I wish all Hollywood actors could be investigated and be punished for all that they have done. Thank goodness it's federal crimes, since we all have seen how the local courts in L.A. automatically free all celebrities even though regular people would go to jail for the same offences.

Higher education is a complete joke and fail in this country.

by Anonymousreply 149March 12, 2019 4:08 PM

Yeah, we have some idea R130, because Harvard fucking LAW doesn't let in random unimpressive students, let alone let them become editor of their crown jewel Law Review.

I don't care what silly fantasy mediocre white people have about dumb Black kids getting to waltz into undeserved elite schools, Harvard fucking Law isn't giving some nobody with no money or family connections any special advantages.

by Anonymousreply 150March 12, 2019 4:08 PM

I’ve honestly never heard of Lori Loughlin.

Wouldn’t it have been easier for the crotchdroppings to take an SAT prep course?

I mean, the SAT is basic math and reading comprehension.

These children must be severely stupid.

by Anonymousreply 155March 12, 2019 4:10 PM

They should have just made a donation to Brown University. Brown takes all of the celebrity kids. Michael Douglas and CZJ have a kid there now.

by Anonymousreply 156March 12, 2019 4:11 PM

Brown University also gave Ben Affleck an honorary PhD so there you go.

by Anonymousreply 157March 12, 2019 4:11 PM

Obama was an Ivy legacy.

by Anonymousreply 158March 12, 2019 4:12 PM

R134, if opportunities were more equal in the years leading up to college admission that would be the case, but they aren't.

I like the Texas system: top 10% of graduates from every public high school is guaranteed admission into the UT system. Think some of those graduates aren't qualified? Better beef up their schools then. Of course that wasn't good enough for some basic white Becky who was mad her mediocre grades didn't let her in before some poor Black kids, so she took her mediocre self all the way to SCOTUS (and lost).

by Anonymousreply 159March 12, 2019 4:12 PM

R139 Is that woman listed Jimmy Kimmel's wife?

by Anonymousreply 160March 12, 2019 4:13 PM

"Higher education is a complete joke and fail in this country."

That must be why foreign students from all over the world come to America to go to college

"These children must be severely stupid."

Well MOST people who apply to schools like Yale don't get in - the acceptance rate there is something like 8%, you think anyone who takes some SAT prep course is automatically going to get in? These people lied/cheated for a reason

by Anonymousreply 161March 12, 2019 4:13 PM

"Mossimo, who was also charged, took a cheap shot at one university. According to the indictment, he wrote an email saying he wanted to "make sure we have a roadmap for success as it relates to [our daughter] and getting her into a school other than ASU!"

by Anonymousreply 162March 12, 2019 4:14 PM

[quote]Can we agree that anybody getting a slot at a university due either to their wealth or the color of their skin is wrong?

I could be okay with money and race being used for admissions as long as it was transparent. It needs to be clearly evident and public record of which students were admitted based on merit and which ones could not meet the regular admission standards because they were not capable but were admitted for other reasons.

by Anonymousreply 173March 12, 2019 4:21 PM

Agree totally R170. I went to an ivy league school in the 70s. We all knew who the "Lower Fourth" was. The kids would tell you proudly! "I'm a legacy." Every Ivy had that group. Now? The Ivies are a joke. I'd rather see my children work their way through state college. Plumber or Cosmetology School.

I've been googling some of the names and there are a lot of doctors, CEOs, etc. People who have profiles on Bloomberg. Granted, they aren't names you'd know but to me, this actually shows how competitive it must be to even buy your kid's way into a school. Felicity Huffman probably can't afford to make a $5M donation to a school.

by Anonymousreply 188March 12, 2019 4:27 PM

R170, that won't happen because of the stigma. They need to ban all of it. Legacy and donors will be hardest to eliminate. The universities will have to do it themselves as there doesn't seem to be a way to do it through the courts (there no protected class being directly discriminated against with the necessary intent). Race will happen in the next few years but will require government oversight since it's pretty easy to surreptitiously factor it in.

by Anonymousreply 189March 12, 2019 4:28 PM

You can be successful by doing well and excelling at any school.

by Anonymousreply 190March 12, 2019 4:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 195March 12, 2019 4:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 196March 12, 2019 4:32 PM

I almost felt bad for Loughlins's daughter now that everyone knows just how much of a dumbass she is--I mean, she's a YouTuber or something, so she obviously can't be an intellectual, but her parents spend hundreds of thousands so just that she could get into USC?! R197 I can't feel too bad for her. She's a trust fund baby who will never have to work a day in her life. As R35 pointed out above, her parents are selling a house worth $35 million. They are super rich which begs the question why they even got involved in this dumb scheme when they could of just made a direct multi-million donation to the university to get their kid in.

by Anonymousreply 205March 12, 2019 4:41 PM

This is hilarious. They probably thought the worst that could happen was they'd pay a ton of money and their kid would still get rejected. Or the school admissions board would disqualify their kids' applications, or maybe even expel their kids later down the road after discovering what happened. But they NEVER in a million years thought they'd be investigated by the FBI of the United States of America. LMAO.

As others have pointed out, the trust fund babies and wealthy “influencers” who receive college admissions through parental bribery are already set for life. Being college-educated is strictly done for image. What vexes me (in my profession) is the increase of upper middle-class graduates who have been coddled by helicopter mommies and hired “consultants” through every step of the process, but were hired under impression that they earned their degrees. These kids can’t think critically, make logical judgments, write a coherent email, or communicate with tact, while their more qualified bosses and co-workers end up putting out fires and carrying the excess load until these woefully inept hires are (hopefully) let go.

[quote] It's a fact that Obama graduated from Columbia without honors.

I'm disputing the fact that people like you seem to know so much about Obama being a "failure", yet continue to ignore what he has managed to accomplish having no real connections.

It's funny how you keep ignoring the position he was given at the HLR as if you believe they knew he'd one day be president, so they were preparing by making him the first to do something when I don't doubt there were other black men who could've been chosen for it.

And frankly, the fact he graduated among the top of his class at friggin Harvard Law School, makes you look so foolish attempting to push some "conspiracy" that some dumb black guy didn't get honors at Columbia, yet somehow, that didn't stop him from being an accomplished grad of friggin HARVARD LAW SCHOOL.

BTW, the one you should be obsessing over is Trump getting into Wharton via his brother. He gives the impression he got an MBA. He DIDN'T.

Buying your way into a school is not horrible, provided that you didn't cheat in high school or on your SATs, and you don't cheat your way through college. Most colleges have very fine print next to their admissions requirements that says the school can make exceptions to the requirements on a case-by-case basis. If your family has the $$$ to buy your way in, then perhaps you have some special perspective that might be valuable in the classroom. Hopefully you recognize the opportunity you've received, and you make good on it instead of taking it for granted.

But cheating is a whole other thing. It's disgusting. It degrades the tools that we use to evaluate all students. Anyone who cheated on their SATs or lied on their applications should be banned from ALL schools for at least two years.

Obama’s instinct for self-fashioning was evident early in his career. Garrow quotes a young Obama telling his ex-girlfriend, Alex McNear, in a letter that he was “one of the ‘promising young men’” at the financial data analysis firm where he worked after graduating Columbia University in 1983. “Without effort, I find I can perform with flawless grace,” he wrote to her, “patching up their insecurities, smoothing over ruffles among the co-workers.” But given his colleagues’ starkly different memories of him—“someone not interested in other people,” “really just kind of kept to himself,” “self-involved,” “somewhat withdrawn”—Garrow concludes that Obama’s self-rendering to Alex “beggared belief.”

Garrow’s debunking goes into high gear when he gets to Dreams from My Father. That book, whose lyrical style and affecting narrative seduced many voters after its 2004 reissue, still furnishes the version of Obama’s early life that most people subscribe to. Even though Obama was candid about having altered key details of his life in Dreams, including creating composite characters, the book was nonetheless marketed as a “memoir” and “autobiography” and taken by readers to be a reliable account of his life. Garrow, however, dwells on the substantial amount of invented material in Dreams and ultimately pronounces it, maybe too severely, “historical fiction.” He also discloses that Fisher, Obama’s Harvard Law School buddy and frequent collaborator, was considerably more involved in conceiving and shaping the book than has been previously known. As Brent Staples remarked in his Sunday New York Times review, Rising Star “is clearly intended to break the 44th president’s monopoly on his personal narrative” that he established with Dreams. It certainly does so.

R383 I've never liked her so I don't feel surprised by this at all, came across as better than all, hard and intimidating. I was one of those few ones who didn't put all the blame on Teri hatcher for the problems there. I've seen interviews of all of them and I found Eva Longoria and felicity to be the worst. I know nothing about Teri but I would say 3 against one.

The unreliability of Dreams is of more than passing interest to Garrow. According to Jager, Obama crossed a line in how he portrayed her, abusing his literary license. Along with his previous girlfriend, Genevieve Cook, and perhaps others, she was folded into a composite character, left unnamed. Dreams described the character as white even though, Jager told Garrow, “I don’t consider myself exclusively white, as I am half Asian.” As Jager saw it, theirs wasn’t a relationship between a black man and a white woman but one between two interracial Americans. “Barack is as white as I am,” she told Garrow.

Jager also told Garrow that the scene, in Dreams, that precipitated their breakup—a bitter row about race after they saw a play by an African-American playwright—misrepresented the issues that actually divided them. In Jager’s telling, the searing fight took place after they saw an exhibit at Chicago’s Spertus Institute about the 1961 Adolf Eichmann trial, a very different context. Where Dreams portrayed the lovers’ rift as at bottom a function of racial difference, Jager, while acknowledging the racial component of their strains, insisted she was mainly upset that day that Obama, in her recollection, was less than unequivocal in condemning “black racism”; it was at a moment when the overt anti-Semitism of Steve Cokely, a black mayoral aide in Chicago, had become a cause célèbre in local politics. To Jager, what doomed their future together was Obama’s incorrigible “realism,” his perpetual readiness to accept and work within given realities—a trait she saw developing in the course of their relationship—while she wanted him to display moral courage.

The lovers’ disparate accounts may be attributable to differences in memory or even in contemporaneous perception. Still, Jager’s observation about Obama’s pragmatism—ratified by so many of Garrow’s brigades of interviewees—gives Rising Star its other abiding and unifying theme. Eventually, it leads Garrow to his damning judgment about Obama, much quoted, that “the vessel was hollow at its core.” That verdict is too harsh; indeed, some of those who were left cold by Obama’s often vapid hope-and-change rhetoric of 2008 later welcomed signs of his hardheadedness and calculation as proof that he knew how to play politics. But Garrow is persuasive in highlighting this pragmatism as a key element in Obama’s bildungsroman.

I’d hire a B student from a state college any day over one of these designer-school pricks who’ve magically earned all “As” in every single subject. At least I know the B students probably did their own work and can handle failure. On the other hand, when these trust fund babies hit a snag and mommy’s not around to wipe their noses, they simply freeze and shut down like broken animatronics.

Felicity and Eva both screwed over Nicollette Sheridan too. Nicollette tried to get them to band together to get a raise and they went to told Marc Cherry, putting Nicollette on his shit list. Both of them testified against Nicollette in her lawsuit against Cherry.

So both Teri and Nicollette are both getting a laugh over this, I'd say.

These people are relatively low-hanging fruit. The Ivy League regularly admits children of billionaires, royalty, and titan of industry. Are these kids coincidentally the best of the best or is someone writing a check? I think we all know the answer to that one.

We shall now turn DL against Obama forever and ever:

More notable than the digs at his competitors are the gratuitous and even petty swipes at Obama himself. Garrow notes, for example, that while Obama was on his “modest” book tour for Dreams from My Father, his celebrated 1995 memoir, the future president “mispronounced W. E. B. DuBois’s surname, wrongly using a French enunciation” in one interview. He tells us, too, that the letters Obama sent as a state senator to Illinois housing officials on behalf of the shady real estate developer Tony Rezko were “grammatically incorrect.” But who among us hasn’t split the occasional infinitive? Even Rising Star—as fluidly, briskly and engagingly written as it is—contains in its pages a dangling modifier, a misplaced apostrophe and “impact” used as a verb.

I attended the Sorbonne - but only got in after two years at an American college. The entrance exam was nerve wracking but I passed it. The curriculum was demanding and there were few 'turn in' papers but you had to know your stuff for the oral and written exams. If you flunked you were outta there. It was an invaluable experience. I did it all on my own, even though my father worked in the diplomatic corp.

by Anonymousreply 421March 12, 2019 6:22 PM

R409, you think I don't believe in the best of the best getting into schools? I don't want the "race thing" to determine anything. I would love it to be purely based on academics and accomplishments, but when you've had decades and decades and decades of stacking the deck against certain kids -particularly black kids- then you can't just have a "do-over" when you have a long-standing system in place that allows only certain kids to have all of the advantages.

And the fact is that we always see people who claim "AA" is just the worst thing in the world thinking that it's giving advantage to people as dumb as Huffman, Loughlin and Kushner when it isn't. And they become more apoplectic over the poor black kid getting in with good grades than these mostly white, wealthy kids getting in - kids who have had every opportunity handed to them and still failed.

by Anonymousreply 436March 12, 2019 6:36 PM

R433, like I said, I don't believe in race being a factor, but let's be honest: Those who whine about it the most are racists who have no problem with the status quo when it benefits only certain people and complain if anyone else gets any advantage.

I only wish society as a whole would adopt the policy of not judging entire groups of people by the actions of some and yet, the people who say "advantages" shouldn't be given based on things like race or sexuality or religion, are the very first to attack people based on those things.

by Anonymousreply 437March 12, 2019 6:37 PM

So many responses so fast. Do I have to read the whole thread to discover what asswipe paid 6 MILLION - that's 6x more than Kushner had to pay for Jared, no?

I worked on multi billion dollar Ivy League fund-raisinging campaign. Every year the president GAVE a list of VIP spawn to the admissions office - priority admits if at all possible - to ensure the financial future of the school. The parents may or may not have eventually donated huge some. Some parents were invaluable just for "associative value" - star and prestige value to the school. I would say outright brides wouldn't be very praticable and too risky, considering their are legal ways and "social" ways for the children of some global VIP to get into the Ivies.

As a parent, I would never ever ever ever pay a tacky bribe like the ones reported. If I were king of siam, I would use my weight, sure, but cash to fudge scores? Tacky.

LSE and University London, and Oxbridge, got a LOT of heat about 10-15 years ago when Gulf gotha were buying yearly passes in courses for their spawn. Careers were ruined.

by Anonymousreply 460March 12, 2019 6:49 PM

Jared majored in govt at Harvard!

He then went on to NYU law school, his daddy also donated a few million to the school.

by Anonymousreply 461March 12, 2019 6:49 PM

Felicity Huffman comes from a very wealthy family. Makes me wonder how she got into college. she went to NYU I'm surprised she used the middleman approach. It must have been because of the SAT scores. Someone from her background should have known about endowment donations.

I had an old roommate who's mother was a publisher but her father was a mailman. On her visit to BU and the admissions office, her father slipped an envelope with 10k in it torward to the officer. The officer gave it a glance, pushed it back and scolded him, telling him to trust his daughters grades and tests. My friend was MORTIFIED.

by Anonymousreply 464March 12, 2019 6:51 PM

What a strange world. I guess some of us were fortunate to grow up in a sweet spot between old world, where only the ruling class went to very elite schools (Ivy, oxbridge, etc) and nowadays where the admit percentages are terrifying. I got into 3 lesser Ivies, Chicago, Johns Hopkins, and I wasn't brilliant, just a middle class boy who insisted they needed to take me. Wasn't anywhere near a straight a student and SAT scores were top but not truly impressive. And there were others like me. I would never get in today and so the fuck what. Who needs to BRIBE and cheat into that. These kids must be DUMB FUCKS to be ignorant of what their parents did. And if they knew, they are immoral fucktwats.

From NYU local : The school has a fifteen-year lease in the Puck Building, which will be up in 2018, just in time for the mid-term elections. At the time of the lease, NYU spokesman John Beckman told the New York Times, “The university was the recipient of a wonderful gift as part of this transaction, and N.Y.U. is most grateful to Mr. [Charles] Kushner.”

Both the senior and junior Kushner attended NYU. Charles attended the university for both his undergraduate and graduate degrees, while Jared enrolled in both M.B.A. and J.D. programs in 2003, the same year his father rented space to NYU at a discounted rate. Jared graduated in 2007 with both degrees, which, we will admit, is impressive.

The law school has a Seryl and Charles Kushner Student Lounge and the dean of the College of Art and Science is called the “Seryl Kushner Dean of the College of Arts and Science” These tributes to the Kushner family are most likely due to the $3 million that Charles Kushner gifted NYU in 2001 or his previous membership on the Board of Trustees that runs the university.

They are just being used for their clickbait recognizable names. Thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of situations like this go on every year.

Felicity was interviewed on Rupaul's podcast recently and was honest about having a privileged upbringing with wealthy parents, not to mention her husband's and her own earned multi-millions. Rich people buy their kids into schools all the time.

by Anonymousreply 512March 12, 2019 7:38 PM

Are these kids enrolled at those colleges now? Or are they planning to enroll in the next few months for the Fall 2019 semester?

I've seen the legal charges document quoted in a few tweets. Anyone know where only the full document can be found? Did they really photoshop their kids' faces on other kids' bodies? That's hard to believe.

by Anonymousreply 513March 12, 2019 7:38 PM

Were bribes paid to schools or were fees just paid to immoral brokers who bribed testing companies for fake scores, and whipped up fake talents and skills and intelligence to DUPE schools?

by Anonymousreply 514March 12, 2019 7:41 PM

One of William Rick Singer’s preferred scams to get the kids of his bribe-paying clients into the schools of their choice was to funnel a cut to college coaches, who would fast-track the students for sports scholarships using their designated recruiting slots, officials said.

And they didn’t let the fact that some of the teens had never even played competitive sports get in their way, allegedly staging — or outright creating — bogus photos of them in action to make their applications seem legitimate to any skeptical eyes, prosecutors said.

“In many instances, Singer helped parents take staged photographs of their children engaged in particular sports,” Massachusetts US Attorney Andrew Lelling said in a Tuesday press conference. “Other times, he used stock photos, sometimes Photoshopping the face of the child on the athlete, and submitting it.”

by Anonymousreply 548March 12, 2019 8:06 PM

Since Prop 209 banned affirmitive action in California public institutions, the percentage of white undergraduates at UCLA has dwindled down to 27% because they’ve been displaced by diligent, motivated Asian and Latino immigrants (and children of immigrants) who were brought up with work ethics. I find this ironic, since prop 209 was mostly supported by white people who thought affirmitive action was the reason their crotchfruit were getting displaced by the other-skinned people. It’s no wonder that they now have to bribe their way into the universities of Cali.

by Anonymousreply 549March 12, 2019 8:06 PM

Huffman just paid for her daughter to be able to cheat on the SAT r539. Lori paid for coaches to fake that they were recruiting her daughter to USC so she could directly gain admission. A more elaborate scheme.

I would hate to be the daughters of these two at the moment. They are going to be ridiculed mercilessly (deservedly so).

by Anonymousreply 557March 12, 2019 8:12 PM

Universities don't care if the student body can hack it academically.

Students who were accepted based on their grades/test scores drop out all the time for financial and personal reasons, or they transfer to a better school.

Which is why admissions for second and third years have relaxed and overlooked requirements.

If the parents can afford four years of ridiculously priced private high schools, they will be able to pay the university on time.

by Anonymousreply 558March 12, 2019 8:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 564March 12, 2019 8:17 PM

Universities absolutely care that the incoming fall freshman they admit graduate r558, their US news ranking depends on it.

They have easier standards for later students because what happens to them doesnt affect their US news ranking.

USC is BIG about playing that game. They will even defer weaker freshman to spring admissions so it doesnt affect their US News ranking.

People lie on their resumes to get hired, are they now going to be charged with crimes?
