Can you recommend some good podcasts?

I’ve already completed Serial, STown, BagMan... I’m kind of good on the murder mystery ones or the ones that highlight our horrible justice system.

Any other good ones? I like What’s the Tee with RuPaul but I’m all caught up on those.

But what about something like that...one that interviewes interesting people or discusses interesting topics.

Or any other good ones? I’ve done some browsing and searching but so far, nothing as good as the above.

I like Fresh Air with Terry Gross.

by Anonymousreply 1March 9, 2019 7:06 PM

Yeah I have that one too but all caught up.

I’m surprised they’re are not more good podcast.

The Gilbert Gottfried podcast is great if you're into '70s TV pop culture.

His interviews with Bruce Vilanch, one of the Hudson Brothers, and Peter Marshall all were hysterical. People really open up talking to Gottfried, even more than they do Howard Stern. (Vilanch outs Margaret Hamilton!)

Marshall talks about going to a strip/swingers club with Karen Valentine and Paul Lynde — he adored Paul Lynde but basically says, "Imagine Paul in a roomful of naked women..."

by Anonymousreply 3March 9, 2019 7:21 PM

Doesn’t it depend on what you like, OP?

by Anonymousreply 4March 9, 2019 7:23 PM

Depends what interests you, but I listen to the New York Times’s “The Daily” every day. It’s really good.

I recently discovered “Shakespeare Unlimited” from the Folger Shakespeare Library, and it is absolutely addictive. Really, really interesting and well produced discussions about all sorts of things, from Shakespeare’s influence on John Wilkes Booth’s life (huge) to Shakespeare in sci fi, speculation about his wife, his views of religion and magic, etc.

And mock me, but I love Oprah’s “Super Soul Conversations” podcast.

I’ll third You Must Remrmber This and I adore the host. Particularly liked the series on Jane Fonda and Jean Seberg but all of them are good. There’s a lot to listen to.

Pod Save America is all right but often a day or two behind events. Bill Simmons has some good podcasts. The short series Unerased was really good.

Wondery cancelled Sword and Scale today. Interesting final episode.

A Twitter mob called the show's sponsors and complained. Because of some political thing.

by Anonymousreply 24March 10, 2019 1:01 AM

Mo Rocca (who's a regular on CBS Sunday Morning) has a newish podcast called Mobituaries, which I have really been enjoying (the rest of my faves are pretty much politics-related). He has had about five. I think the most interesting so far has been the one about the original Siamese twins (Chang and Eng Bunker) who had an amazing life(lives), and have a shitload of descendants in the town were the Andy Griffith Show was filmed, Mt.Airy, South Carolina (or is it NC?) Also there is a good one about the life of Audrey Hepburn. Actually, all the episodes have been great--highly recommend.

Adam Sank Show - Gay Comedy podcast, current events and gay personalities. Stuff you Missed in History Class - History podcast discussing more obscure events and people.

by Anonymousreply 28March 10, 2019 3:45 AM

Listen to R25! Mobituaries is wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 29March 10, 2019 3:50 AM

Another agreement with R25. I just listened to the Sammy Davis Junior episode — featuring DL icon Dionne Warwick. Rocca gets some great interviews.

I also like the Daily, Hit Parade, NPR Politics, Malcolm Gladwell’s Revisionist History, Swinging Through The Sixties, Switched On Pop, and NYT’s Popcast, among other more niche ones.

by Anonymousreply 30March 10, 2019 4:19 AM

Pod Save America is good if you have insomnia, but don’t listen if you are driving. That show sucks so bad, those guys are boring and not edgy, just a bunch of former Obama Ivy League douchebag staffers blathering on. I tried watching it twice and nearly fell asleep.

Joe rogan experience. I'm not into the MMA ones, but he has tons of other interestingnones. Paul Stamets (mycologist) one is good. Jordan Pederson. Steven Tyler one is interesting. Just had dr. Phil on. Also did the infamous Elon musk one. And no, Joe is not alt right. He also has tons of various independent journalists and entrepreneurs, motivational folks,etc... Presidential candidate Andrew yang was on recently and they discussed universal basic income and the takeover of automation. The scientist ones are fascinating. Mike Tyson was on talking about tons of stuff.

by Anonymousreply 35March 10, 2019 5:42 AM

I had to drop You Must Remember This. Yes, I found the narrator's' voice annoying, but I managed to hang with it for a couple years. The breaking point for me was when she introduced the GPS-style voice automation for the re-enactments. I thought they couldn't get worse from her own attempts at re-enactments, but I was wrong. Unlistenable.

My favorites:

"The Tennis Podcast", with David Law and Catherine Whitaker. A little heavy on British tennis, but they'll usually wait to the end of the show to focus on that. I like that they'll tell it like it is, and they're not afraid to disagree with each other. They don't feel "compelled" to go pro-WTA on every topic, like another tennis cast does.

Another vote for Gilbert Godfried. Even if you think you don't know the guest, chances are you'll have heard of the movie or actor or director they'll discuss during the podcast. I thought Gilberts voice might annoy me, but it doesn't. Plus, I've lived through Karina Longworth.

"Crimewriters On...". I mention this on every podcast thread we do here, I should get a royalty. But it's four authors/investigators from New Hampshire who review True Crime podcasts and TV Shows. I like that they fully review the podcasts - content, production values, acting/narration. My one (minor) critique is that they've been branching out into other podcasts/projects, and doing quite a bit of schilling for those. But otherwise a fun podcast.

OP here, who knew there were so many podcasts.

Ross Matthews does a weekly podcast but imo, it is a lost opportunity. Maybe it will get better. It needs a new format.

If you like to learn out the history of rock and roll, I recommend Let It Roll podcast.

Also, if you kayak or raft in the NW, River Talk podcast is a must.

For films- the Film Comment podcast

Jon Ronson’s The Butterfly Effect about what happened when free internet porn appeared

The Love & Radio podcast- lots of strange stories in the This American Life vein... one of the most bizarre episodes is “The Recruiter” about gay for pay porn. There are others about different cults like Scientology and the Mormon church.

by Anonymousreply 45March 10, 2019 10:25 PM

Are there any good gay podcasts?

by Anonymousreply 46March 10, 2019 10:44 PM

I've listened to Film Week from KPCC radio for years (cuz I live in LA and the show originates from here--actually Pasadena technically). Some of the panel are very good (Peter Rainer, Claudia Puig, Lael Lowenstein). They basically review all the new movies opening in LA, which is second only to New York in the number of indies and foreign films that play here. All are print critics with long experience. Peter Rainer is my #1 critic in the country in that I think his taste is quite comparable to mine.

by Anonymousreply 47March 10, 2019 10:47 PM

Karina dropped the robot re-enactments after a few episodes. Obviously she got complaints or cane to her senses. That said, there hasn’t been a new episode in almost 2 months... is it on hiatus? Usually there has been a new episode every 2 or 3 weeks.

by Anonymousreply 48March 10, 2019 11:41 PM

The Moth has some great stories.. And Ive always liked This American Life...

by Anonymousreply 49March 10, 2019 11:44 PM

R48, Karina posted that her contract was up at the end of January. She may or may not come back.

by Anonymousreply 50March 10, 2019 11:55 PM

I'm also a commuter. Mine are mostly all the NPR shows I don't have time to listen to on the weekend radio while I'm doing other things. Ask Me Another. The Moth. Radiolab. Snap Judgment. Ted Radio Hour. This American Life. Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. I used to also listen to To The Best Of Our Knowledge but that was an additional 2 hours a week and I couldn't handle it. I have a few specific episodes of How I Built This.

by Anonymousreply 51March 11, 2019 12:11 AM

I loved Snap Judgement's Halloween spinoff, Snap Judgement Spooked.

by Anonymousreply 52March 11, 2019 12:27 AM

Does anybody listen to Ana Ferris’ podcasts?

Any recommendations for country music or Nashville themed podcasts?

by Anonymousreply 53March 11, 2019 1:08 AM

Krista Tippett’s ON BEING. For deep thinkers and the intellectually curious. Her recent interview with Daniel Kahneman was fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 54March 11, 2019 1:21 AM

The first season of Crimetown is brilliant it’s set in Providence Rhode Island and all about the felonious mayor who kept getting re-elected, the mafia and their shameless hold on all walks of life in that city , and the FBI who took everyone down. The newest season is very grim and I haven’t the stomach to listen to it .

by Anonymousreply 55March 11, 2019 1:44 AM

If you're an alternative music/records fan you need SONG EXPLODER. It's changed my podcast experience.

Artists featured discuss their own songs in detail. Bonus is that the song being discussed is played in full at the end of each episode, so you kind of get a song playlist/built-in mp3 library built up with each download.

by Anonymousreply 56March 12, 2019 9:27 PM

I’m having a hard time finding anything good on Nashville/Music Row.

by Anonymousreply 57March 12, 2019 10:11 PM

Love the Rich Roll podcast , a plant based diet promoter and ultra athlete. Awesome guests w sports nature and or inspirational like the Free Solo guy Recovery addict. He is an upscale version of Joe Rogan similar guests but no right wink wackos, no MMA.

Like Dax Shepard - he is sex on a stick. Also in recovery but focuses more on celebrities

by Anonymousreply 58March 13, 2019 1:57 AM

Bump. I'm finally listening to "Serial," season one. I remember all the hoopla when this podcast came out. While I admire the reporter/narrator's diligence, I wish I cared more about the people involved in this case, they all seem shady.

I like "The Vanished," which takes on a different missing person every week. The hostess has a very flat delivery which bothers some people, but I like it. Straightforward, bi drama, and she seems to have real compassion for all the missing and their families. In that vein, I also like one called "Generation Why," about mysteries and conspiracy theories in general.

by Anonymousreply 59March 20, 2019 1:40 PM

There have been some really good Australian true crime podcasts lately and the two I really enjoyed are "The Teacher's Pet", which actually culminated in the arrest of the main suspect in one of the longest and most notorious Australian cold murder cases, and the other one being "Who the Hell is Hamish?" about a con artist who scammed people of tens of millions of dollars over the period of almost 30 years. Sort of like "Dirty John" but without any murders (that we know of.)

The one which really disappointed me, since I had high hopes for it, was the BBC podcast "The Doorstep Murder", based on a very interesting and mysterious cold case in Scotland, but, except for regurgitating the same known facts about the case which are widely known over the span of 6 episodes, offered absolutely no new insights or deeper investigative reporting.

by Anonymousreply 60March 20, 2019 2:14 PM

R59 here, don't know why I typed "bi drama." I think I meant NO drama.

by Anonymousreply 61March 21, 2019 2:05 AM

I'm so into podcasts right now that I rarely listen to music in my car or home anymore. Personally, I like the more scripted podcasts, I don't like the ones where the host or guests talk about whatever and meanders from subject to subject. That said here are some of my favorites:

Slate's Culture Gabest - is beyond brilliant. It's one of the few podcasts I listen the day it airs. It's smart, funny and the subjects range from low to high culture. I love it. See a review below...

Wait Wait Don't Tell Me - is a hilarious quiz show about the past week's news events. I think it's NPR's #1 podcast.

Theory of Everything - Is a strange eclectic podcast, where each week the nerdy host will take a theme and explore variations of that theme. Trippy Weird Esoteric

Decoder Ring - Another great Slate.com podcast. It's about cracking cultural mysteries and tries to figure out what it means and why it matters. My favorite so far was the podcast about the history of paper dolls and how two very young gay brothers from the midwest became obsessed with them in the 1950s and how their obsession continued into their adulthood; one to fame, the other to oblivion.

Risk! If you like This American Life, The Moth, Snap Judgement this podcast is like them but way, way dirtier. The host is a gay comedian named Kevin Allison, who I hadn't heard of before and to honest, he's kind of annoying. He's Mr. TMI, like letting us listeners know he's into Asian bears and fisting, and preferably Asian Bears that can fist him (talk about a small demographic.) But each week you get everyday people sharing funny, embarrassing and sometimes gross-out sex stories they thought "they'd never dare to share in public".

You Must Remember This - IMHO is the best source of Hollywood history in the podcast universe. The hostess is an absolute genius, she an almost academic approach to her research, findings, and correlations. And YES her old-timey voice is/was horrible, but her computer-generated narrater was worse. And as someone up thread said, I think she mentioned on her series finale that she no longer going to be doing the podcast. But if anything, give it a try and listen to the series on the Manson murders and their ties to Hollywood. Chilling.

For those TL;DR types: listen to Slate's Culture Gabfest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know this is dumb to say. But I seriously found a podcast that is changing my life and is so amazing I refuse to share it with anyone! It’s my little secret. It’s semi popular in its circle but the person that does it will in my opinion be huge eventually- and I don’t want that to happen yet. No ! I won’t tell you the name of this podcast you cuntz!!

I bet it’s one of the spiritual podcasts. I had a few but dumped them because after a few episodes you realize they are gimmicky.

by Anonymousreply 67April 2, 2019 3:59 AM

...so what is the point of your post then r64? Just so you can feel special by having people beg you for the name of your podcast? Well, if it's a self-help podcast, I'd say you are at the beginning of your journey...

by Anonymousreply 68April 2, 2019 4:08 AM

My point is I read a lot of books. Listen to a lot of music. Watch a lot of movies. Read a lot of music. And listen to a lot of Sirius and podcasts. This podcast is my holy grail and I’m not giving it up to people, I think most don’t deserve it’s powerfulnes. I will say that I’m getting a service that if I’m real life would be worth thousands. But no. Not telling. Go back to talking about serial or not or whatever you guys are recommending. Carry on minions...

R60, if you like Aussie true crime podcasts, you should give Casefile: True Crime a try. I really like the (anonymous) host’s delivery and his episodes are very well researched. I also like the fact he features cases from all over the world, though mainly Australia.

The episodes he dedicated to the Golden State Killer and Jonestown are some of the best on each subject, imo. He also did a great recap of the Silk Road case.

Three episodes deep into 'Curious, with Josh Peck' and I'm having a nice enough time.

Caveat; it's probably only tolerable for people who enjoy mildly amusing Millennial/GenX convos about L.A. quotidien, Basic bitch culture and the A&E biz. It's nothing ground-breaking and certainly nothing special but works for a pleasant easy background listen if you're so inclined, is what I'm saying.

Peck has affirmational bullshit to say now & then too, if you're in need of a free life-coaching session.. He good-naturedly curses a lot and talks about sobriety & existential crises to former addicts and washed-up entertainers so I put it on at my desk sometimes if I want to scare off customers.

KERA’s Think is a twice-daily interview programme produced by the NPR station in Dallas and is available as a podcast. The host, Kris Boyd, is a very good interviewer (she’s as good as Terry Gross, IMHO), realky does her research, and asks thoughtful questions.

Each hour-long episode focuses on a single subject, and the topics are varied and current. Occasionally the topic is locally-focused or orientated to a Texas audience, but that’s rare enough. Most episodes would appeal to a national audience. The guests and topics are kind of like what one would hear on the Diane Rehm Show when she did a daily programme broadcast from DC.

There are two episodes produced four days a week, so it should provide you with plenty of content for your long commutes, OP, even if you’re very selective about which episode topics you ultimately choose to listen to. I used to listen to Think on air when I lived in the DFW area, but I still keep up with the podcast version long after having moving away — it’s that good!

reply 62 here and I recently discovered the best podcast I've heard yet, "The Secret History of Hollywood". Now first off this isn't a tawdry "Hollywood Babylon" style podcast, just the opposite. When I first start listening to it, I thought it was a work of fiction, it was delightful and took me into the world of silent screen, pre-Hollywood, New York moviemaking. It wasn't until the story moves to Hollywood and he starts retelling stories of real Hollywood directors, producers and actors that I realize that it was fictionalized/biography hybrid history of Hollywood's early days. My words here can't do it justice. So here's a review from a fellow fan that does a much better job of it:

"I recently discovered The Secret History of Hollywood and do not know where to begin articulating the perfection and true art infused in this podcast. Mr. Roche is an artist. Is it a podcast, is it a radio show, is it the oration of a majestic tale..... it is all and more. I enjoy well-researched podcasts with a respectful level of wit. This podcast is so much more. After completing the first episode I needed to take some downtime to absorb the story, to savor Mr Roche's elocution, to cleanse my emotional melancholy of the tales of the American dreams experienced by so many... if you enjoy old radio shows, the magic of old Hollywood movies and can recognize true art in its purest form, you must give yourself up to Mr. Roche and his tales of Hollywood, history and the American dreams of many."

For those interested in codes or WWII, the Bletchley Park podcast is interesting. Especially "Operation Overlord" which they broadcast last week for the DDay anniversary.
