Jussie's story has always been not the story of an assault or a crime, but rather the Hollywood version of a crime. Everything about it read like a "ripped from the headlines" episode of Law & Order. The media then later reported that when asked a SECOND time, Smollett told the police that the attackers did indeed say the MAGA stuff.
