What place has underewhelmed you?

You know the place. You've been excited to go for sometime. You pack, you travel, you arrive, only to be filled with a sense of disappointment.

Puerto Vallarta. Asbury Park. Key West.

Bangkok

Whore's village!

by Anonymousreply 6February 17, 2019 3:00 PM

Bangkok, Thailand the biggest shithole I’ve ever been, ill never go to South Asia again. The heat and humidity is smothering. The smells of large pots of unknown broths on the streets will make you want to throw up. It’s awful.

The Sistine Chapel. All that waiting in line outside the Vatican and then trekking through the Vatican interior, only to get to a small, poorly lit, overcrowded space where you can hardly see the masterworks on the ceiling. Total waste of time.

These threads always feel like a PR shill from a sister city is attacking the competition. Are these underwhelming places to live? To visit for a weekend? For a week?

I’ve found a way to enjoy almost every place I’ve visited for at least a couple of days.

Coney Island. It may be nicer now, but when I saw it for the first time in 1968, I was shocked at how shabby, run down and deserted it was. The only interesting thing was a window display featuring a live chicken and a toy piano. A sign said that for 25 cents, the bird would play "Rum Boogie." So I put a quarter in, a pellet came down from an automatic feeding device, and the chicken pecked out a few random notes on the piano with its beak. And that's my memory of Coney Island.

Monterey County, CA ( including the God awful towns of Seaside, Marina, and Salinas). Carmel and Monterey are overcrowded, tourist, ridiculously expensive tourist sites and the towns mentioned above are ghettos.

The year round fog, 60 degree temps, and constant rain and drizzle add to the depressing vibe of the area. The blatant segregation and racism are the rancid cherry on top.

by Anonymousreply 54February 18, 2019 5:53 AM

Mobile, Alabama - drew Trump's largest primary crowds.

Pensacola, FL - spooky, ghetto swamp, with KKK outgrowths. Tear everything down and leave the pristine, crystal sand beaches.

Marin County, CA

Please explain the alleged appeal!

by Anonymousreply 64February 18, 2019 6:14 AM

I live there r64 and I can't! I hate it here. The people are massive assholes. My super, super shitty condo is well over 2k a month. Are parts of Marin pretty? Sure, but at a really high cost. Not at all worth it.

by Anonymousreply 65February 18, 2019 6:19 AM

Park City, Utah

Not at all what I expected. Condos all over mountain ranges, $12 pizza slices, those drink limits, and the snobbery. Scenery less than bedazzling

by Anonymousreply 66February 18, 2019 6:20 AM

[QUOTE]San Francisco it was boring and full of the worst kind of people.

by Anonymousreply 67February 18, 2019 6:22 AM

Thanks for the insight r65. Couldn't point my finger on it, but now that you mention it - the hosts of the long weekend party I attended seemed superficial to say the least, and their shitty falling-off-a-hill mini mid century ranch- ish house was apparently worth well over a million. Neighbors smooshed in on both sides. And coke whore Fraus married into money dancing the white ng dervish dance and comparing lousy plastic surgery before diving into the powder room for their every - 10 minute - fix. Uptight gays mingled with rent boys.

Then, if you have any strength left, you can slam for all your worth on Oakland , Berkeley and the entire East Bay.

I actually would like to live in Marin Cointy. Insanely expensive - but living near Mt Tam and the vast open space of western Marin is a luxury that is worth it. I could never afford to,live there - but have always dreamed of being able to. Not sure I would want to live in a condo there. But to live in a MCM with some kind of view would be my dream.

Nearly every island in the Caribbean. Some of the smaller, more remote ones were okay, but all the major touristy islands are crap.

by Anonymousreply 94February 18, 2019 7:16 PM

Santa Fe and Taos. Dreadful.

by Anonymousreply 95February 18, 2019 7:27 PM

I found Dublin blah too. Very little of the unique historic architecture of London or Edinburgh. Mostly post 90s bland. Nothing that would make someone choose to go there. Except to access the western coast of Ireland - which I do think rivals Scotland for wild beauty (at least parts, like Donegal, Mayo, Kerry)

by Anonymousreply 96February 18, 2019 7:41 PM

I'll also say Boston. There was a shitty vibe from the people and everything for the most part was underwhelming as far as expectations go. Beacon Hill was fun to walk through.

Palm Beach, Taos, and Ojai.

Boston for me as well. I love Cambridge, though.

by Anonymousreply 109February 18, 2019 11:48 PM

The physical layout of Boston yes. Unless you are in the very center of old Boston. But Boston has a certain vibe that I like.

by Anonymousreply 110February 18, 2019 11:53 PM

Rhode Island beach front. Some areas are nice (Watch Hill, Newport). I stayed in Misquamicut Beach and rented a house through a local rental office. The house was apiece of shit (no A/C in the middle of summer, everything was shitty). Last time I rent from a local rental company (no online reviews)

Mount Rushmore - the presidents are actually pretty small and its a huge tourist trap. Santa Barbara - Everyone raves about how pretty it is and I found it one big strip mall. Palm Springs - Its filled with wrinkled, leathery and often naked old gays. I'm an old gay and pray I don't end up in PS trying to chat up some young gayling at the Barracks with my big old balls and leathery dick flopping around.

Just got back from Venice. The canals and buildings are unique and beautiful, but the experience was pretty negative. Walking through the centre with massive crowds. Everything horribly expensive, eg, €13 for a cappuccino in the main square, €3 for a paper map to get around. Tourist shops selling masks everywhere; you can't tall me all those thousands of masks were made in Italy, not China. Not a tree in sight, nowhere to sit apart from the overpriced cafes. Must be sheer hell in the summer heat.

Yosemite National Park---overcrowded and OVERRATED. If not for the waterfalls and the Ahwahnee Hotel it would have been a complete waste of gas.

i'll stick to Zion and Mt. Rainier in the future.

by Anonymousreply 129February 19, 2019 2:25 PM

Los Angeles. Dirty and just aesthetically unappealing. Surprisingly gray, chilly, and rainy (admittedly I was there in the winter). Horrific traffic.

However, once outside LA, the mountains and canyons are lovely.

by Anonymousreply 130February 19, 2019 2:26 PM

Another vote for Aruba - what a hot, dusty, creepy-ass shithole.

Maui - did not live up to the hype at all. They turned paradise into a parking lot. Hana is the single exception.

Central Pennsylvania - looked like the setting for one of those "Left Behind" novels.

Florence - Oh the humanity, oh the lines.

Rio - your life is at risk and there are better beaches.

Agadir (Morocco) - a dirty desert town next to the ocean.

Atlanta - and the point is what, exactly? Awful traffic, too.

Acapulco - if you don't get shot, you'll get hepatitis from the water.

Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville - most of Florida, actually. I know the sun is shining. It's what it's shining on.

Moscow - even if it is very gay on the first of May. The rest of the year it's hell on earth.

And upvoting whoever said Chez Panisse. Worse now because it used to be great: nothing lasts forever.

Shenandoah National Park. The grandness of the western mountains and forests spoils you to a lot else.

^^^Jayzus, shit suckers. What will they think of next?

R99 - R100 - don’t listen to that bitter queen. Santa Fe and Taos are lovely and definitely worth a visit. 2-3 days max but still enchanting.

R130, I agree. LA is really ugly mostly because it’s just so bland. I will never understand it’s appeal. Plus a lot of it now stinks of “medicinal” marijuana. No thanks.

NYC-er here and I love LA (to visit). I always have fun and think the scenery is pretty beautiful (Malibu, the hills, the weather). Downtown LA is bland, but there are some decent restaurants and bars. I haven’t found many cultural events or an arts scene that compare to NYC, but every city is different... and maybe those exist if one gets to know the city better?

Italy would be off the chart incredible except that it is filled with Italians....a bunch of embarrassingly pathetic petty thieves.

Data Lounge. Where's the really great gossip?

Well....

Another NY%er who loves LA. Lots to do, beautiful ocean, great hiking, walkable WeHo. I don’t like downtown - really grimy - but very hip. And now Uber has made it so much more user-friendly.

Well done R131.

An admirable summary. I'd only add most of the cities in China, whose historic centers have been obliterated by the economic boom of the last thirty years . I'm interested in Chinese history and spending time there was... underwhelming. Better in the books.

Another vote though in support of L.A. The downtown is a little dicey, and large swaths of its truly ugly, but the overall experience is fascinating.

Any other votes?

Beijing. Was there in the winter and it was cold, dark and windy. The smog was so bad I didn't see the sun for two weeks and could barely see across the street. Way too many bicycles. I'm a big guy and stood two feet above most of the locals. I was constantly mobbed by people wanting to "show me the city so they could use their English." The Great Wall of China was nice to walk on for about 30 minutes. Certainly not worth the long haul flight. I don't have to go back ever again.

r131 - I need you in my life!

These are the reasons I like(d) watching "Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown." He traveled to the shitty places for you and showed you what was what. For me, that's plenty.

^cheaper!

by Anonymousreply 171February 22, 2019 6:29 AM

Do you think we went to these places with high expectations that weren't met or are they just shitty places period?

My first trip to France as a kid was seriously underwhelming. Now I go to Paris on the Eurostar a few times a year and adore it. Turns out it’s family travel I hate.

Was underwhelmed by Santander, Edinburgh (preferred Glasgow) and Germany.
