The thing I love most about Jim Reilly was his response to critiques who never got his style of writing. He would always say (paraphrasing), I get it, what I do isn't for everyone. But that is the point. Every show doesn't have to be for everyone and in a perfect soap world you should have 20 different soaps all about 20 different things with the common denominator being love and romance. It was never anyone's intention to make these shows all look and feel the same. The outrageous stuff is beating the drum and getting the asses in the seats but, if I'm doing my job correctly they stick around for the love story. They stop channel surfing when they see Dee Hall floating over a bed, but they stay to see if the love of her life will save her from Satan.

Baby Andrew was the "soapiest" of all the '80s supercouple babies in terms of being the center of intense drama, over a sustained period of time.

Sure, a couple of his cousins were also kidnapped as infants (as happens in Salem)...but they weren't missing for nearly as long as Andrew was. Nor did they have that pesky paternity-cloud hanging over them. Fetus/Baby Andrew basically drove his parents' storyline(s) for a solid 18 months! (from 12/85, when Kim learned she was pregnant, until Summer 1987, when Andrew needed a blood transfusion, and it was discovered that his father was indeed Shane, not Victor)

My two favorite couples of the '80s & early '90s were Kim/Shane & Jack/Jennifer. As such, when Abby was SORASed in the mid-aughts (in the form of Ashley Benson), there was a group of J&J fans who REALLY wanted to see Andrew Donovan brought onto the canvas as Abby's love interest. It just made all kinds of sense to us. Both were children of supercouples. Born six years apart, so the relative ages were easy to fudge, if the writers really felt it necessary to make them closer in age.

And their parents -- although not as close as they were to Bo/Hope or Steve/Kayla -- were definitely in each other's orbits around 1990-91 with Lawrence Alamain. And Kimberly had known Jennifer forever! In fact, Jennifer was Wee Andrew's babysitter, around the time Eve first came to town. (That was as much as part of Eve's early jealousy toward Jennifer, as the unrequited crush on Frankie). And then there was the whole alliteration thing.....Andrew & Abby....Jack & Jennifer.

Anyway....the guy we had our eye on, to play Andrew Donovan, was Jason Gerhardt -- who played Maxie's boyfriend, Cooper, on GH. Not a great actor, but he really LOOKED like he could be Shane & Kim's son.

I also love Sarah. She is a refreshing character= she can be funny, she can be heartfelt & she can be a mess. I also love the actress because she has embraced all sides of this character. The only misstep they did was making her rabid about Eric getting Holly. The writing was contrived because she went from 0 to 60 for a near stranger. Luckily that misstep is over.

I also like Rex. He's likable & charming but he is also a walking talking hound dog. He wants to be in love & committed but you know all of that would go out the window with the mere hint of perfume.

I also like Sarah -- I think she's the most refreshing character this show has seen in a long time. Seems she won't be long in either Rex's or Eric's orbit, which is fine with me.

He was smitten. And that changed everything for Jack. She saw the good in him, they fell in love, and the rest was history. (more or less; after a couple years of angst/redemption).

So, yes.....there IS something about this storyline playing into Jack's "dark nature" that rings true. The way he got all hot & bothered with Eve at the thought of fucking over someone else? That felt like what Steve used to call "Billy-Jack Happy-Jack, Johnson-Deveraux"...when Jack was being asshole, out for himself. I'm missing Steve....and Adrienne...in Jack's return. Why isn't Adrienne all up in his face?!

Rapist Jack. Jack and Jennifer. Buffoon Jack. Sleeping with Laura Jack, etc... And you know, Jack took all the blame in the Patch and Kayla thing, but Patch and Kayla weren't blameless in that mess.
