The reason why Billy got so pissed off is because he feels that Frank and the Network made him certain promises that have not been delivered on. And when Billy feels duped, he comes out in his performance or lack thereof.

One of those promises was that he would get to work with Kelly. He likes Kelly and trusts Kelly and was promised that when Steve returned it would not affect their storyline. Of course, Kelly was on board with this because she and Steve Burton have a complicated relationship. Well, it did affect their storyline. In fact, Steve’s return affected the entire two-year storyline they had planned for Billy’s version of Jason. That was all scrapped and Billy was not amused, and no one could make him understand why Steve’s return required changes.

Then he was pitched a story that would have taken Drew out of Jason’s orbit, but it needed some tweaking because ABC found that storyline too dark. They pitched it again with the changes and ABC killed that story for the soapier storyline of two brothers in love with the same woman. This pissed off Billy who wanted to play something with some meat.

So Billy had his people make some inquiries over at Y&R about his old job. There was interest, but then that all went to hell because that show is going through a EP/Headwriter shift.

The Ryan story is rippling though the canvas, and if there were more great actors involved, it would be a classic. Lindstrom, West, Genie Francis: these people are elevating it. Emme Rylan really is not selling her parts, at all, at that's a shame, because they are giving Lulu meaty material right now, and we should be on tenterhooks. I'm riveting for Ava when she realizes that the man she loves is a) an imposter; b) an imposter who kills people; c) an imposter who loves and obsesses over her because she is a bad girl, and not any kind of redemptive one that Father Hottie was trying to tell her she was; d) a killer who killed her daughter; e) a killer who killed her daughter because of his obsession with her. I hope they play all those beats, and let Maura dominate for a while.

More unpopular: Roger Howarth is good. Becky Herbst has been good. While I still think the whole Franco business has been stupid, the characters on canvas right now are interesting (regardless of the Franco history), and the way they played Cameron into it (finally) has really made this sharp. Playing Drew with Elizabeth? Smart. That history got forgotten during this Steve Burton return nonsense (Liz should have been played heavily with both actors, as Sam should have, instead of Sam and Jason only).

So, it's not perfect (the Anna/Finn blindness story should be great and it's not because it's constantly interrupted, Valentin/Nina wastes good actors), but I'm actually itching to watch everyday.
