European Royals Discussion Thread Part 2

No talk of British Royals unless it’s relevant to a non British Royal, please

by Anonymousreply 513Yesterday at 7:39 AM

Don't know if I like this hair style of Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.

by Anonymousreply 112/10/2018

From the last thread, Dutch Queen Maxima's oversize blue coat.

by Anonymousreply 212/10/2018

Maxima is one of the most flamboyant and colorful European royals. She's also very friendly.

by Anonymousreply 312/10/2018

Yes, I didn't want to like Maxima at first but I do. She's warm.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg (of Cuban heritage) calls her "Latina" in this video. She seems very down-to-earth.

Princess Alexandra of Luxembourg, the only daughter of Maria Teresa and Henri, is pretty.

by Anonymousreply 712/10/2018

A royal marriage between Archduchess Gabriella of Austria and Prince Henri of Bourbon-Parma took place recently. The couple already has a daughter. Click for more photos.

by Anonymousreply 812/10/2018

Gabriella is the daughter of the former Princess Marie Astrid of Luxembourg. At one time, there was talk of Marie Astrid being a possible bride for Prince Charles but her Catholicism was an issue. Click for more photos of her in the link below. She was quite striking as a young woman.

by Anonymousreply 912/10/2018

Marie Astrid went on to wed Archduke Carl Christian of Austria.

by Anonymousreply 1012/10/2018

Before the law of succession was changed (from males first to eldest child regardless of gender), King Carl Gustaf of Sweden was automatically the heir even though he was the fifth born child. His elder sisters were Margaretha, Birgitta, Desiree and Christina.

by Anonymousreply 1112/10/2018

Was it changed in Luxembourg? Marie-Astrid is older than her brother.

by Anonymousreply 1212/10/2018

Marie Teresa was a beautiful young woman and a stunning bride

by Anonymousreply 1312/10/2018

Sofia of Sweden looked tremendous in her red gown and pearls at the Nobel ceremony, in the photos posted in the prior thread. Amazing.

Good for Victoria for re-cycling and re-wearing her mother's Nina Ricci gown. Those kind of looks can be timeless and it makes sense to re-wear them and pass them down if they fit. Loved it.

by Anonymousreply 1412/10/2018

Good lord, the ROCKS on display at the Nobel ceremony! Sofia looks more regal than either Silvia or Victoria, both of whose dresses leave much to be desired - the Ricci dress needs more in the way of, er, real beauty to be carried off. Some designs just aren't done justice to by ordinary looking women.

by Anonymousreply 1512/10/2018

Here's a link to the prior thread, in case it wasn't posted.

I'm quite surprised how much Queen Anne Marie of Greece looked like her sister Margrethe when she was young, but doesn't look anything like her now they're old.

by Anonymousreply 3012/12/2018

And Margrethe for comparison.

by Anonymousreply 3112/12/2018

And now. There's only 6 years difference between them. I wonder if any work's been done.

The Norwegian Royal Family has released a couple of photos for Christmas.

by Anonymousreply 4312/14/2018

They say that CP Mary went to some sort of finishing courses called Starmakers before she married into the Danish Royal Family. Matters of deportment, how to look someone in the eyes when conversing. Proper use of tableware, table manners and the like. It works for her because she comes off as classy to me. She’s from Tasmania, so she’s a tad raffish but she’s so charming. She’s got many detractors on the Royal forums...sounds like jealousy.

by Anonymousreply 4412/14/2018

R44 - I like Mary of Denmark. I think she's doing a wonderful job in her royal role. I can see her taking a course like Starmakers. Too bad there isn't a course called "How To Be Royal 101". Some of the British royals need some instruction.

by Anonymousreply 4512/14/2018

Maybe Princess Sofia of Sweden should have taken such classes.

by Anonymousreply 4612/14/2018

R46 - Considering her background, I think Sofia is doing pretty good since her marriage to Carl Philip. She's surprised me.

A royal blast from the past - I've seen this video before of the Romanov children playing on board a yacht. It always makes me sad to know that none of them would live long enough to enjoy their adulthood.

by Anonymousreply 5612/16/2018

R56 their yacht was like palace itself. Alexander III ordered it but Nicholas II used it from 1895. They sailed by Finnish coast and met local people. Finland was the most peaceful area of Imperial Russia. Minnie, Nicky’s mother, was very popular, because she was from Denmark and spoke Danish and many people in Finnish coast spoke Swedish and were able to talk with the Empress.

by Anonymousreply 7112/17/2018

I was sure that Philippos was gay.

R92 fertility treatments make you put on the pounds. There must be a lot of pressure on her. Is there much gossip on this? I don't follow them.

by Anonymousreply 9412/21/2018

She does look bigger doesn't she? Normally I wouldn't speculate but since it's kinda part of the deal for the heir to procreate, here we are.

She's posing with her back oddly to the camera. Hmm. I can't find any recent photos of her, the most recent seem to be from the Netherlands visit last spring.

by Anonymousreply 9512/21/2018

R94 I don't think she is the one with the problem , more like he just doesn't like women that way .

by Anonymousreply 9612/21/2018

R95 - I haven't seen the couple in a while either. I believe Guillaume and Stephanie have been living in London. It was announced that he was continuing his education in that city but I always suspected that the real reason was because London has some of the best fertility experts in the world.

by Anonymousreply 9712/21/2018

Shouldn't the Ducal family found out if she was fertile before she married Guillaume? They could have been spared of all this. Personally, I hope Felix and Claire's oldest inherits the title.

Below is another allegedly closeted royal, Prince Jaime de Bourbon-Parma of the Netherlands. King Willem-Alexander is his cousin. He accepted a post a couple of years ago as Ambassador to the Holy See, where supposedly a LOT of action takes place. He recently resigned from the post; don't know what he's doing now.

by Anonymousreply 9812/21/2018

by Anonymousreply 10212/22/2018

It took me awhile but I found these comparison photos of a young Mathilde next to Gabriel.

by Anonymousreply 10412/22/2018

What's the big deal r104? That's her son, he should look like her...

by Anonymousreply 10512/22/2018

In this day and age what difference is there if a British heir marries a Catholic?

by Anonymousreply 10612/22/2018

there isn't r106. Not since the rule or law was changed to allow the monarch or those in order of succession to be married to Catholics and keep their place in line. It would be fine, but the Catholic spouse would have to agree in advance to raise their children as Anglican, as they are heirs and the monarch is the "Defender of the Faith" among other things.

Any of their children outside the immediate heir could convert to Catholicism on reaching adulthood. They'd lose their place in succession however.

Why do the older King’s abdicate? Isn’t being the chosen Monarch viewed as an appointment by God, thus lasting all of ones natural life?

by Anonymousreply 15101/05/2019

R151 - It's different with European royals. They have events like "swearing in " ceremonies rather than coronations. I don't think the European royals who abdicated were CROWNED and ANOINTED with holy water from the River Jordan like Queen Elizabeth was at her coronation. The British monarch also lived through the trauma of King Edward VIII's abdication. When the Queen was 21 years old she made a broadcast and said these words: " My whole life -whether it be long or short - shall be devoted to your service"...I don't think the Queen will ever abdicate. She will relinquish her duties bit by bit to Charles but I don't think she'd go back on her word.

The other royal families don't have qualms about retiring and giving up the throne. It's almost expected in places like the Netherlands. The three Dutch Queens (Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix) all abdicated. I expect that Willem Alexander will do the same in due time for his daughter Catharina-Amalia.

I just figured out there are lots of Royal children in Europe. 150 yrs ago they would have married one another.

by Anonymousreply 16401/10/2019

R164 - yes but the royals are marrying "commoners" now instead of their fellow royals. That's good and bad. It's good for variety as far as the gene pool is concerned but bad because their standards have been lowered to such a degree that they risk becoming jokes (eg. divorced women, actresses, reality stars, women with children but no husband etc...).

Meanwhile, back in Monaco, Charlotte Casiraghi is denying that she broke up with her fiancee. I doubt it will last whether she marries him or not.

by Anonymousreply 16501/10/2019

R165 I suspect this is likely to become the norm. I personally think it’s boring when royals marry someone who is already titled or outrageously wealthy in some way. In a modern society, things like divorce, children out of wedlock, etc are the norm now. I know the royals aren’t really supposed to be modern, but I think it serves them better from a PR standpoint to marry for love.

Also, there seems to be MORE trouble with natural born royals and the super wealthy.

by Anonymousreply 16601/10/2019

R165 Silvia brought much needed new genes to Bernadotte family.

by Anonymousreply 16701/10/2019

R166, I think it was one of the Swedish royals who said that marrying Swedish commoners was a way to align the royal family more with the people, long-term. It certainly wasn't said that way, but that was what was implied. It does make sense, really. Long-term, no one can claim that the royal family isn't Swedish. And they could there for a while.

R184 & R185 - Mabel is the Dutch Princess who lost her husband Johan Friso (brother of the current King). He was buried in an avalanche for 15 minutes, suffered brain damage and was in a coma for 1.5 years before dying. The couple had two children together.

So...is this just a picture thread or is there any actual gossip about the European royals?

by Anonymousreply 19901/22/2019

Except for the House of Grimaldi, the continental royals seem rather boring and less prone to scandal compared to their British counterparts. Either that or other European countries don't have the type of tabloid culture as the UK that thrives off of royal gossip.

by Anonymousreply 20001/22/2019

Speaking of the Grimaldi clan...today is Princess Caroline's birthday. Here are some nice photos of her through the years.

by Anonymousreply 20501/24/2019

Empress Maria suffered the loss of her FOUR sons while still living herself. Two were murdered in 1918 (her eldest son was the Czar), one died of tuberculosis and the other of meningitis.

by Anonymousreply 20601/24/2019

It's the birthday of Princess Charlene of Monaco. A woman who is almost unrecognizable from when she first appeared on the scene. Too much plastic surgery and/or too many procedures on her face.

by Anonymousreply 20701/25/2019

Compare the first photo to the second photo and you will see a big difference in Charlene's face.

by Anonymousreply 20801/25/2019

After the death of the Count of Paris (see R193), three heirs of the non-existent French Throne have emerged. I think D'Orleans line has the best claim (he is the son of the late Count), followed by the Bourbon family. The upstart Napoleon line doesn't even register for me.

by Anonymousreply 21301/28/2019

There’s plenty of gossip about them. It’s just that they’re from countries where English isn’t the first language, so most of the tea spilled about them is seldom in English. And in Norway it’s against the law to say anything about the Royal Family. Paris Match and Der Spiegel have lots of gossip about them. That’s how people found out that Princess Mette Marit was cheating on Prince Haakon of Norway. It could not be printed in Norway.

I’ve been crushing on Crown Prince Haakon for years now. He truly loves Mette, but she allegedly has been unfaithful and more than once. That’s gender equality in Norway for you.

I hope that she doesn’t die. She looks like she should milk cows but she’s not a bad sort.

Princess Madeleine of Sweden with her mother Queen Silvia at a meeting with the World Childhood Foundation. One of the few times I've seen the Swedish queen having a bad hair day.

by Anonymousreply 23602/07/2019

R236 Silvia’s face is tragic

by Anonymousreply 23702/07/2019

R236 - are you alluding to her "plastic surgery"? I honestly don't think she's had any. She has a wrinkly neck and under-chin and surely that would've been taken care of with surgery?

by Anonymousreply 23802/07/2019

R238 - sadly, I think Silvia has ruined her face. She WAS really pretty. How do her eyes look more "open" now than when she was much younger? You can have a face lift without a neck lift. Her face lift should have worn off by now so I wouldn't be surprised if we see another version shortly. Her cheeks are also noticeably "fuller".

by Anonymousreply 23902/07/2019

Eyes wide open, chipmunk cheeks, trout mouth = Surgery and other procedures.

by Anonymousreply 24002/07/2019

I dunno guys. I'm not buying it. I think if Silvia has had work done, it hasn't been much. My mother had a face lift when she was about 50 and it didn't "wear off" like R239 suggests they do. I'm not really buying it.

by Anonymousreply 24402/08/2019

R241 it s well known in Sweden she has been in Brazil many times to have face lifts etc. She looks like smiling all the time

by Anonymousreply 24502/08/2019

R241– she needs to take her over 40 daughter with her if Victoria wants to keep her husband

by Anonymousreply 24602/08/2019

R246 - the only thing that is wrong with Victoria is her pointy chin which she inherited from her motherSilvia. But I would say she should leave it alone. In all fairness, Prince Daniel isn't drop dead gorgeous either so they're a good match. I've always thought that Victoria and Daniel resembled each other enough to look like siblings more than husband and wife. Here they are at the time of their engagement in 2009.

by Anonymousreply 24702/09/2019

Another photo of Victoria and Daniel of Sweden.

by Anonymousreply 24802/09/2019

Queen Mathilde of Belgium.

by Anonymousreply 26002/16/2019

I'm pretty sure we've discussed Rania's new face on one of these threads before. It's truly dreadful. Hopefully, it will settle. She was so naturally beautiful that her aging couldn't have been so bad as to distort her face with fillers. What a contrast seeing Martha Louise's picture right below. Though only a year younger, her naturally aging features are graceful and still beautiful, but Rania has had her face butchered with beyond recognition. She used to be so beautiful. Sure, the desert climate is harsh on skin, but FFS... She an Terry Dubrow ought to host some program together just for the giggles.

by Anonymousreply 26102/17/2019

Rania was a ratched face dating back before she married that pudgy Prince Aladdin,

You do understand that the only reason for the existence of the rat faced Jordanian royalty is that the US uses it as a Air Base

by Anonymousreply 27602/22/2019

Children on a red carpet? How gauche.

It’s like the Grimaldis just can’t help themselves. They must never want to be seen as a simple princely family, they need to be Kardashians. Those two twins are doomed for the same life as the rest of the family.

by Anonymousreply 28602/26/2019

Those pictures of the Dutch royal family on ski vacation are great. I realize some of the pictures are posed for but they all look like there having a great time and enjoying being with each other. Not the vibes you get from some royal families.

by Anonymousreply 28702/26/2019

Surprised a bit that the do look so happy skiing, given Prince Friso died just a few years ago from injuries sustained skiing (off piste). Back to the slopes. Glad to see them doing well.

Queen Letizia of Spain. I like her dress but sashes don't look right with strapless dresses.

by Anonymousreply 29102/28/2019

Call me old-fashioned but I don't think Queens should wear black leather. Spanish Queen Letizia has done it a couple of times. Here are some photos of her leather dress from this week.

by Anonymousreply 29202/28/2019

R292 - I agree with you. Letizia for the most part has good fashion sense. She makes her position look a little more business-like, which I think is good. Lots of lovely beautifully-fitted pants suits and such. But she can sometimes take it just a little too edgy for my taste.

by Anonymousreply 29803/03/2019

Rumors of a romance between the late King Baudouin of the Belgians and his stepmother, Princess Liliane de Rethy have surfaced. This supposedly happened BEFORE his marriage to the Spanish aristocrat (Queen Fabiola). This news is surprising because Baudouin was a conservative and very religious man who didn't even want to sign legislation to legalize abortion in Belgium.

by Anonymousreply 32203/21/2019

That rumor has been around for a while r322. I recall reading about it several years ago. Not sure there was anything to it.

by Anonymousreply 32703/22/2019

R327 - I've never heard any romance rumors regarding Alexandra of Luxembourg either. I think she's the best looking in her family. She's 28 years old so she may be thinking of settling down (or not). LOL.

by Anonymousreply 34403/27/2019

by Anonymousreply 34503/27/2019

The First Lady of Argentina is extremely youthful and attractive. Usually Letizia stands out as the youthful, fashionable one in official photos with world leaders and their wives. Not so here. I love the short dress the First Lady is wearing the the fringe hem, just long enough to make it respectful.

I didn’t realize CP Victoria’s voice was so dusky. Is she a smoker?

by Anonymousreply 37304/12/2019

Well is she?

by Anonymousreply 37404/13/2019

R373 & R374 - I haven't seen Victoria smoke or heard that she smokes so I'm guessing she doesn't smoke.

by Anonymousreply 37504/14/2019

R373– I am sure she smokes her husband’s pole regularly to keep her royal lifestyle going

by Anonymousreply 37604/14/2019

Not likely since the husband is the one who married into the Royal family. Victoria is the future Queen Regnant of Sweden.

by Anonymousreply 42005/01/2019

Well, I wouldn’t mind talking about the Grimaldis of Monaco. I like them. There’s been a little crazy here and there, but overall they seem like a close family, very stylish. Grace did a wonderful job of being princess and seemed a loving mother. I appreciate Caroline, such a stunning beauty in her youth and today a very attractive matriarch of the clan. I also find the daughters-in-law Beatrice Borromeo and what was the other one’s name? Tatiana? both to be very chic. Young princess Alexandra is always so ladylike in her dress and demeanor. Finally I think Charlene is gorgeous and projects a suitable air of serenity and mystery.

Thoughts, anyone?

by Anonymousreply 42105/01/2019

I think the princely family of Monaco is interesting too. They’re a bit like an 80s nighttime soap opera. Nonetheless, their family and dominance over Monaco goes back to the 14th century if I’m not mistaken, and they made an interesting marriage in the 19th century with the daughter of an English duke and a German princess, so every Grimaldi thereafter has shared ancestry with most of the major royal Houses in Europe.

by Anonymousreply 42205/01/2019

Are the Grimaldis respected amongst the royalty of Europe?

by Anonymousreply 42305/01/2019

I’d say more now than before Prince Rainier mounted the throne. Monaco was considered a shady place and the family penchant for infidelity and out of wedlock children was distasteful for most royal and princely families. Rainier’s marriage to Grace raised the profile of the place, and his shrewd and strategic business skills saved the principality from Onassis, growing it physically through land reclamation and growing it upwards with skyscrapers and industry. Rainier and Grace were invited to most of the big royal events in the 60s and 70s like The Shah of Iran’s Persopolis celebration, the royal wedding of The King of The Hellenes and Princess Annmarie of Denmark, the royal wedding of The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana, among others. Queen Elizabeth is said to have a warm relationship with Prince Albert and was the first to call him when Rainier passed away. Caroline marrying a Continental HRH also helped the Grimaldi profile because she got to go to some royal weddings as her husband’s guest. Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain, granddaughter of Queen Victoria herself, was a godmother to Prince Albert.

by Anonymousreply 42405/01/2019

I have to laugh. Hardly anyone from the British Royal Family would give the princely family of Monaco the time of day because of the reigning prince marrying an actress. They stuck up their noses to the Grimaldis for years. Now, they have a big LA grifter in their family. Karma is a bitch!

by Anonymousreply 44405/08/2019

The Grimaldi’s have a long tradition of it, going back to Prince Rainier’s grandfather siring a bastard and then being forced to adopt her or else have the family lose the throne the distant German cousins. In the WWI era, that was unthinkable.

Is it lovely that if one is Queen, you can name an award after yourself and make people happy when they receive it from you? Here is the Queen of the Belgians at the Queen Mathilde Prize Award. I don't think her outfit is very flattering for her.

The middle Orange girl is turning out to be the hottest. The oldest (The Princess of Orange) inherited the blocky head that all Orange women seem to have except for Princess Irene, she also looks like the type who will have a lifelong struggle with her weight. The youngest daughter, bless her heart. She looks a little special.

by Anonymousreply 45405/10/2019

But aren't folks from the Countess's social strata, women especially, fearful to the point of paranoia about the hoi polloi, R452? Or maybe a bodyguard got distracted during a smoke break while she was in the Loius Vuitton store?

Here is a video of Martha Louise and her bf Shaman Durek. His fashion choices would be a disqualification right off the bat for me. LOL.

R464 - I've been going through Shaman Durek's Instagram and he seems to enjoy showing off his contacts with his celebrity friends. Lots of photos of him and various women. I'm getting a creepy, exploitive, manipulative vibe from him. That's the first impression I got.

R489 - Oh God yes. I remember that photo which was seen around the world. I'm sure her parents were wringing their hands trying to figure out how to rein this girl in. Stephanie gave them headaches too. Albert (the father of illegitimate children) was quite tame in comparison to his two sisters.

While the British royals were attending the marriage of Lady Gabriella Windsor, there was another royal wedding held today. Alexandra, the daughter of Denmark's Princess Benedikte was married in a low key ceremony . Photos in the link below.

by Anonymousreply 501Last Saturday at 1:01 PM

Interesting, Alexandra chose not to wear the Khedive tiara which many of Queen Ingrid’s descendants have worn at their weddings. She’s wearing the floral tiara which can also be taken apart and worn as brooches, I think a Berleberg piece originally.

Were Queen Margrethe II and Queen Annmarie there?

by Anonymousreply 502Last Saturday at 3:07 PM

Oh wait a minute. Marriage #2 for Alexandra already? She DID wear the Khedive for her first wedding.
