Woke up like this, a year older, a year wiser, ready for work haha 😂 🙌🏻🙌🏻 I often reminisce about when I started DiDario Inc. I literally thought I was going to be the first gay CEO. So innocent, so oppressed, so brainwashed. I felt all alone. It took me about 4 months to finally get the courage to tell my new friends in NYC. I was so use to the reactions I got from Jersey that I didn’t want to deal with it.

The most common responses I received in NYC was, “oh wow I had no idea” or “oh cool.” I was taken back at how little anyone cared. Night and day from Jersey. But what surprised me more was instead of cutting me out, these friends became protective of me. I felt a support I had never comprehended before. Not only did they accept me for who I am, they were ready to stand up for my rights and my dream. That was my first introduction to being an influencer.

In the last week in anticipation of my milestone birthday I have felt more internal peace than I have ever felt in my life. However that peace pales in comparison to the outpouring of love and support I have received from friends, family, and even strangers. Since my last post I have received message after message of encouragement and birthday wishes.

I’m reminded that we are all striving towards the same goals, to find happiness, joy, belonging, acceptance, purpose. I look at strangers and friends in a new light. I see a powerful but fragile person wanting to find connections and be heard and seen for who they are, and to bring out their best potential. Everyone wants to be their best, and be seen as their best self.

I’ve learned the best way to tell if I’m truly happy is when I want everyone around me to find that same peace and happiness. Reminds me of one of my favorite analogies: love is not gluten-free pie, there are not limited slices to give to those around you, love has an endless supply, and increases the more you give it to others.

I struggled when I first came out to New York with no allies, no examples of gay professionals, no idea what I was getting myself into with social media. I was admittedly naive. I felt alone and terrified, ready to be judged and looked down on. As I’ve been open and honest in my life I have found friends and loved ones surround me with support. I have found the importance of allies, to give a voice where I can’t. They don’t have to put themselves on the line, they don’t have to go out of their way to defend and protect me, but they choose to be there for me and other LGBT when our voices can’t or won’t be heard. Thank you for giving me the strength to be myself. Thank you for taking part of my burdens away. Thank you for putting my needs above your own. That itself is amazingly selfless.
