PrEp isn't magical protection. Young men (and older, I guess) are using PrEp instead of condoms. They reason that they won't get HIV. For those that were never going to adhere to condom usage, PrEp away. It's the ones that are abandoning condoms when they previously used them that I'm thinking about.

That's not accurate R41. He moved to North Carolina to live with Paul Dill after the show. He hosted a collection of shorts called Boys Briefs 2 and his hosting was stilted. Just terrible.

They lived there and in Seattle. They broke up in 2006.

In 2011/2012 he returned to Hollywood and was on a TV series on OUTtv/Netflix called, "DTLA" with Daryl Stevens.

When that didn't work out he moved back to Atlanta and started selling real estate. He got married again in 2013.

They did get paid to do the show but what they got was a "stipend" originally. People mostly made money doing college tours and talking about the show. The stipend ranged from a little over $1,500 to $5,000 and up depending on the year you were on.

4. had his white blood cells killed by radiation, then received a "transplant" of cloned white blood cells from a donor with a double "CCR5-delta32" mutation (which renders the donor immune to ~84-96% of HIV strains known to exist in "the wild", in people who aren't within weeks of death from AIDS as per #2)

After #4, the person is "technically cured" of HIV. He still "has" it, but his "new" T-cells can't be infected by the latent HIV virions in his viral reservoir, so the HIV is kind of like a burning oil lamp on a wet concrete slab with plenty of oil to burn forever, but unable to spread beyond that oil lamp.

Somebody who had a heterozygous CCR5-delta32 mutation to begin with is naturally semi-immune to HIV (well, 84-96% of known strains)... but because the only strains that CAN infect someone like that are the deadliest ones (which ironically, are the strains least-able to newly-infect someone), someone with that immunity who DID manage to get infected anyway would go downhill REALLY FAST without aggressive treatment (the good news is, even CCR5 mutant HIV is generally susceptible to tenofovir & other first-line antivirals, so it's still not a lost cause).

IMHO (and the opinions of most HIV researchers), even someone who acquires a technical cure as described above would be stupid & reckless to quit taking meds, even if the likelihood of future self-reinfection is low. Modern meds work, have no real side effects, and that technically-cured person should still AT LEAST be on PrEP in case he gets exposed to one of the 6-14% of strains that CAN infect him. If you're HIV+, technically-cured, and on PrEP anyway, it's insane to not just add drug #3 and be totally covered.

(footnote: it's possible to have a homozygous CCR5-delta32 mutation. In that case, it would offer no real immunity, but would be self-limiting. The HIV would infect & kill off the 50% of T-cells without the immunity, then be unable to progress further. Most guys who caught HIV pre-triple-drug combo therapy & lived 10+ years did so by virtue of having a homozygous CCR5-delta32 mutation).

TLDR: CCR5 is a protein that enables HIV to "dock" onto an infectable cell. No CCR5, and HIV just floats aimlessly with nothing to "grab".

Some people (mostly east-central Europe, esp. Slovakia) are born with a mutation that alters CCR5 in 50% or 100% of their T-cells in a way that renders the cell immune to any strain that needs CCR5 to "dock".

It's believed that the original mutation arose during Europe's Black Death (or some earlier hemorrhagic fever epidemic).

It's not *totally* a win, though. People born with the mutation are immune to most strains of HIV, but are ULTRA-susceptible to upper respiratory infections.

Source: I was born with the heterozygous variety. I'm on PrEP anyway (96-99% protection is a net improvement over 86-94%). On any given day, I'm ~25% likely to have a respiratory infection of some kind (rarely in summer, nonstop all winter).
