by Anonymousreply 18November 7, 2018 3:37 AM

Oh, the geniuses on the previous thread declared that there's no point in voting because the Supreme Court is fucked.

Fuck you, fake concerned Democrats.

I'm not going to cry all night because some Debbie Downer on Datalounge wants me to think the Democrats didn't do well, and even if they did, it doesn't matter anyway.

Fuck all of you, and that includes the return of our prodigal son VOTN, who declared in Part 6 that the Dems didn't do a stellar enough job tonight.

We did great. The Repugs learned 40 years ago that winning smaller elections, consistently making small gains, is what would get them power in the end. We made more than a small gain tonight, we made big gains, and we have momentum.

Thingsdon't change overnight and everyone here is definitely old enough to know that by now. So maybe start acting like it.

by Anonymousreply 19November 7, 2018 3:37 AM

It sucks that the GOP is picking up probably several Senate seats from very vulnerable Democrats. As for Beto, he came so close in a state where conventional wisdom said he shouldn’t, and there was a definite halo effect of his campaign onto other House races where Democrats were victorious.

O’Rourke is just getting started.

Yes, although Montana is a Red State, it still often votes for Democrats.

It has a Democratic Governor, a Democratic Senator, and it voted for Bill Clinton once, and nearly voted for Obama in 2008.

[quote]These 3 states (Florida, Texas, Ohio), are in the R pockets due to Gerrymandering, machine hacking, etc.). We will never get any wins here.

And those are three of the most important states. We needed them badly tonight, esp the governorships. I do think there was tinkering in FL, given the felon voting initiative passed but the progressive candidates did not. Something smells badly and it ain't fish.

We need to roll up our sleeves and work, work, work for the next two years. Build on what we won tonight. Analyze it carefully over the coming weeks, and then begin debate about the head of the ticket in 2020. There are lessons here to takeaway. LEARN. R 569 from the prior Part 6 post is a great post, a good start.

Arkansas just approved a big minimum wage increase, a liberal victory in a red state

by Anonymousreply 83November 7, 2018 3:47 AM

Powers The Constitution vests certain exclusive powers in the House of Representatives, including the right to initiate impeachment proceedings and to originate revenue bills. The organization and character of the House of Representatives have evolved under the influence of political parties, which provide a means of controlling proceedings and mobilizing the necessary majorities. Party leaders, such as the speaker of the House and the majority and minority leaders, play a central role in the operations of the institution. However, party discipline (i.e., the tendency of all members of a political party to vote in the same way) has not always been strong, owing to the fact that members, who must face reelection every two years, often vote the interests of their districts rather than their political party when the two diverge.

A further dominating element of House organization is the committee system, under which the membership is divided into specialized groups for purposes such as holding hearings, preparing bills for the consideration of the entire House, and regulating House procedure. Each committee is chaired by a member of the majority party. Almost all bills are first referred to a committee, and ordinarily the full House cannot act on a bill until the committee has “reported” it for floor action. There are approximately 20 standing (permanent) committees, organized mainly around major policy areas, each having staffs, budgets, and subcommittees. They may hold hearings on questions of public interest, propose legislation that has not been formally introduced as a bill or resolution, and conduct investigations. Among important standing committees are those on appropriations, on ways and means (which handles matters related to finance), and on rules. There are also select and special committees, which are usually appointed for a specific project and for a limited period.

The committees also play an important role in the control exercised by Congress over governmental agencies. Cabinet officers and other officials are frequently summoned before the committees to explain policy. The Constitution (Article I, section 6) prohibits members of Congress from holding offices in the executive branch of government—a chief distinction between parliamentary and congressional forms of government.

After the census of 1920, Northeastern and Midwestern states held 270 House seats and the South and West held 169. Thereafter, the balance between the two regions gradually shifted: following the 2010 census, the Northeast and Midwest accounted for only 172 seats, compared with the South and West’s 263. Most notably, the number of representatives from New York declined from 45 in the 1930s to only 27 in 2012, while the number from California increased from 11 to 53.

MSNBC Puts Florida Governor Race Vote-Total Graphic Onscreen A Wee Bit Early

The nation got an impossibly early peek at the outcome of the hotly-contested Florida governor's race on MSNBC – after the network mistakenly posted a graphic of the results before the polls even opened.

The network posted a graphic showing the two candidates, Democrat Andrew Gillum and Republican Ron DeSantis, who are facing off in one of the nation's marquis contests, during its Monday night broadcast.

Deadline Hollywood, which posted a screen grab of the graphic, showed it had Gillum grabbing a narrow victory. It had precise vote totals with a 49.4 to 48.8 and a gap of fewer than 46,000 votes

I feel so bad about Gillum. I really like him. He gave one hell of a concession speech. He's ready to go to work tomorrow and keep fighting. That means that even in states that are red where ugly, mean spirited things happen, there are people who are fighting to make it right, and I'm not going to let this discourage me. I was born and raised in Texas. After living and traveling around the world, there’s one thing I’ve learned, R256. People hate the idea of Texas. People think Texans are crazy. The only people who love Texas and give a shit about its politics are Texans. Beto’s loss in Texas will not make him a loser to anyone who would vote for a democrat. Only a deplorable would see his lose as a liability. He started as an unknown. Last week he was polling ten points behind the Republican incumbent, an incumbent who has run for President twice. And in a deeply red state. Today he lost by three points. Imagine what he can do in nondeplorable places like PA.

The plurality of Latino citizens in the US are mestizo of some sort, and they don't vote in large numbers. When Dems are reaching out to Latinos, they mean mestizos -- not privileged white Latinos. Everyone knows this. And the former do not vote in large numbers.

by Anonymousreply 453November 7, 2018 5:11 AM

The losses that really hurt tonight were Nelson and Gillum. They were supposed to win. The rest was predictable. Sucks that the Dems lost almost every Senate tossup, but it could have been worse. And we were never going to win the Senate anyway.

With a strong majority in the house, the fun begins!

“We had a lot of history-making in the House. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota will become the first Muslim women to serve in Congress. Deb Haaland of New Mexico and Sharice Davids of Kansas became the first Native American women elected to the House. At 29 years old, New York’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. And Ayanna Pressley will be the first African-American woman to represent Massachusetts in Congress.”

by Anonymousreply 570November 7, 2018 6:16 AM

Walker losing is the best Dem win of the night!

by Anonymousreply 571November 7, 2018 6:16 AM

R567, I had to think for a sec what you were talking about. Brandon totally needs a fair shake, but Steve... um...

by Anonymousreply 572November 7, 2018 6:16 AM

I'm praying to Christ almighty that Putin's bagman from CA-48 (aka The OC) Dana Rohrbacher LOSES to Harley Routa.

With 62% reporting, Routa is in the lead by 600 votes.

70,513 to 69,913.

I will be giddy if career scumbag Rohrbacher is sent packing.

by Anonymousreply 573November 7, 2018 6:17 AM

Florida and Texas, trash states.

by Anonymousreply 574November 7, 2018 6:17 AM

Kellyanne Conway talked to the press for 30 minutes saying the Democrats better not investigate Trump too much. LOLOLOLOL!!!!

by Anonymousreply 575November 7, 2018 6:17 AM

I was watching CNN earlier and one of the annoying Republicans was like “Walker is unstoppable!”

Hahahahaha!

by Anonymousreply 576November 7, 2018 6:18 AM

As if anyone cares what Kellyanne Conway has to say. The White House is going to get 100 times more chaotic and backstabbing now.

by Anonymousreply 577November 7, 2018 6:18 AM

R575 filled with trash people( but miami and austin are cool)

by Anonymousreply 578November 7, 2018 6:18 AM

R563 I agree. I’m a Californian now living in Las Vegas.

by Anonymousreply 579November 7, 2018 6:19 AM

Get those motherfucking tax returns!!!

by Anonymousreply 580November 7, 2018 6:19 AM

R580, thank you for your service!!!

by Anonymousreply 581November 7, 2018 6:19 AM

Rosen (D) has now opened up a 5-point lead on Heller (R) in Nevada:

by Anonymousreply 582November 7, 2018 6:20 AM

R576, I saw that, too. What a stupid cunt. Oh no! Democrats better not investigate anything! Kellyanne says it’s a waste of time!

What the FUCK does that evil cunt think she or anyone else is going to do about it? Is she out of her mind?

by Anonymousreply 583November 7, 2018 6:20 AM

Vegas is way cheaper so lots of dems from hawaii and california move there.

by Anonymousreply 584November 7, 2018 6:21 AM

Dems need to colonize more fucking states. CO, NV, and VA are great examples!

by Anonymousreply 585November 7, 2018 6:21 AM

It needs to be a thing, like Indivisible -- figuring out where to move or whatever to make states purple then blue. Like when people moved to Kansas and Missouri before the Civil War, with both sides moving to each to make them slave/free states.

by Anonymousreply 586November 7, 2018 6:22 AM

Rosen (D) ahead of Heller (R) by nearly 7 points in Nevada now:

Democrat Susie Lee won NV-3

by Anonymousreply 588November 7, 2018 6:24 AM

Need to get more californians to move to texas.

by Anonymousreply 589November 7, 2018 6:24 AM

So will the disgusted suburban Republicans voting "D" this time return to the fold for Pence or another Republican in the future?

by Anonymousreply 590November 7, 2018 6:24 AM

NV is close...

CNN CALLS NEVADA FOR JACKY ROSEN

by Anonymousreply 592November 7, 2018 6:25 AM

Puerto Rico needs to be recognized as a state and given the right to vote.

by Anonymousreply 593November 7, 2018 6:25 AM

R592, what’s close about it?

by Anonymousreply 594November 7, 2018 6:25 AM

R590, it's weird, because the Californians moving to Texas are notably conservative.

by Anonymousreply 595November 7, 2018 6:26 AM

NV isn't close, R592. Rosen is winning, hands down.

by Anonymousreply 596November 7, 2018 6:26 AM

I know a couple Californian gays who moved back to TX (Austin) not so long ago, and voted for Beto.

by Anonymousreply 597November 7, 2018 6:26 AM

R592, with 27% in the Times was showing Heller as winning... AP, too.

by Anonymousreply 598November 7, 2018 6:26 AM

TONY EVERS WINS! NO RECOUNT!

by Anonymousreply 599November 7, 2018 6:27 AM

Oh the Times was slow in updating -- now it's 76% in. Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 600November 7, 2018 6:27 AM

Hispanics are 20 percent of the population in Colorado and growing and helped solidify this as a blue state. I think the Latino vote helped in Kansas too. The problem with Latinos in Texas and Florida is many of them vote GOP.

by Anonymousreply 601November 7, 2018 6:27 AM

R592, the NYT results page is behind in the count.

Rosen is now well ahead of Heller, and CNN just called Nevada for her.

by Anonymousreply 602November 7, 2018 6:28 AM

Dirty Dean Heller -- LOSER!

by Anonymousreply 603November 7, 2018 6:28 AM

r575, you can add Ohio to your list of shithole states. Guess I need to start seriously looking to move west. I can't even.

by Anonymousreply 604November 7, 2018 6:34 AM

Announced that Heller is about to concede.

by Anonymousreply 608November 7, 2018 6:46 AM

Congratulations to Jacky Rosen! I only donated to two candidates this year and she was one. Nevada is doing Harry Reid proud.

by Anonymousreply 609November 7, 2018 6:49 AM

Nevada's transformation is complete! Colorado elected the first Gay male governor and New Mexico finally elects a Democratic as governor and reelected hot papi Martin Heinrich for the Senate. Thank you New Mexico your conversion conversion is also complete!

California passing the Animal Cruelty law and giving the finger to Canada. Thank you.

Dana and Steve Knight likely going down tonight, while more California Republican held seats are likely going down in the next couple of days.

Dems flipping 7 governorships tonight, Thank you.

Great night for Democrats.
