WHET Supermodels?

Are you old enough to been blessed to live in the supermodel era? Wow - they were so glamorous and beautiful and really bitchy, too! Don't wake up for less than 25 thousand! ROFL! Wish I could have said that!!!

It's true, they were the lastest great models, and the only real models! Those ugly models today are a joke, right! What are they thinking? Can't fool us!

I bet you had a fave! I did or do, still do cause I love mine. It's Mia Girlingi. The one who got her faced slashed and caught the AIDS then got hit by a bus. TRAGEDIE! I was a fashion insider and all we thought Mia was the more beautiful. She had a REAL mystery in her face and on her eye.

New here, joined to talk about these wonderful ladies! Go!

[quote] Don't wake up for less than 25 thousand! ROFL! Wish I could have said that!!!

OP, Evangelista also wishes she said that. Because she didn't. The figure she quoted was less than 25k:

[quote] Linda: "We have this expression, Christy and I: We don't wake up for less than $10,000 a day."

Though her quote is from 1990, so with inflation that might be over $19k in today's money.

by Anonymousreply 6September 29, 2018 10:58 AM

r6 Why would you want to find anything on Mia Girlingi?

by Anonymousreply 7September 29, 2018 10:59 AM

Only the insiders knew Mia but she was a supermodel, the bestest. I love the supermodels!

If only we could talk about them, even every once and awhile. But they never seem to come up on DL. I thought this was a gay site.

by Anonymousreply 11October 14, 2018 9:45 AM

Mia Girlingi? You don’t mean Gia Carangi, do you, OP?

by Anonymousreply 12October 14, 2018 9:50 AM

Ah, yes! The age of supermodels. Dogs lived with cats. Hot and cold running champagne out of the taps.

Yeah, a few people got blinded by the hot champagne in their eyes. And those catdogs were a crossbreeding nightmare, but still. Who didn't love it when you got assaulted with Naomi's cell phone?

And who doesn't have burn scars from when a supermodel nodded off and accidentally burned you with a cigarette? I got 45 from Kate Moss alone. Heroine chic.

And I still treasure the first dental implant I got after bulimia started ruining my teeth.

by Anonymousreply 13October 14, 2018 10:08 AM

Christy Turlington was the most beautiful of the lot IMHO. Naomi was the most ferocious and fun to watch. Don't know if she is considered one of the true supermodels, but I loved Yasmeen Gauri too. All of them were uniquely beautiful women and so much more appealing than the nameless girls of today.

I think OP meant Gia Carangi . If so, he is an idiot. Every gay man should know who Gia Carangi is - first lesbian supermodel, one of first women to die of AIDS, fierce bitch, epitome of late 70s sexually intense fabulousness. As importantly, her life story was made into an iconic movie form late 90s which was Angelina Jolie’s break out role and remains one of the most fabulous movies about the late 70s-80s transition in existence.

by Anonymousreply 17October 14, 2018 3:48 PM

Nothing is really head and shoulders above the rest in this disposable social media culture of ours.

I mean, Trisha Peytaa is a “star,” for fucks sake. End of conversation.

by Anonymousreply 18October 14, 2018 4:01 PM

It's funny you bring this up. I was watching all of Alexander McQueen's old shows before he passed and found this documentary of the real supermodels of the 90's. It was pretty cool to see a young Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, and a very very young Kate Moss (who was smoking & drinking at what looked like 14 or 15 years old). Back in the early days they all seemed to get along and it was fun to see that.

by Anonymousreply 19October 14, 2018 4:07 PM

Gia or maybe Janice were the first supermodels before they were a thing. The supermodels of the 90's were household names - remember the Fashion Cafe? Most of the celeb spawned models today don't have the proportions to actually be a real model w/ maybe the exception of Kendell Jenner.

by Anonymousreply 20October 14, 2018 4:10 PM

The supermodel craze was not a good thing. It heralded the worship of superficial beauty over substance. Yes, pretty Poole we’re always valued. But then pretty people became some of the most valuable beings on the planet. Which I think lead to the spawning of the Kardashian Kulture. The pretty faces of the 90s replaced the cool substance of the 70s with the horror years of the 80s being the turning point when substance and art were overthrown by artifice, capitalism and celebrity worship.

by Anonymousreply 21October 14, 2018 4:19 PM

^ pretty “people”

by Anonymousreply 22October 14, 2018 4:19 PM

What I like about 90's supermodels is that they all seemed to come from these pretty humble beginnings and at least in the early years, they seemed very polite and business like. Kate seemed like such a fun chav that somehow fell into it.

by Anonymousreply 23October 14, 2018 4:28 PM

There are plenty of great new models today, despite the dumb stereotype of there not being any (and I don't mean Kendall). Many of the 90s supermodels are still working.

by Anonymousreply 24October 14, 2018 4:37 PM

What models are household names that don't have celeb parents meaning they built their careers from the ground up? Anna Wintour killed the supermodels by replacing them with celebs.

by Anonymousreply 25October 14, 2018 4:54 PM

The supermodels were invented by Gianni Versace. The roots of the genealogy are the Peter Lindbergh editorial in British Vogue, which was seen by George Michael, who put Cindy, Christy, Linda, Naomi and Tatiana in his Freedom 90 video, which inspired Gianni Versace to have Cindy, Christy, Linda and Naomi walk down his runway at the Versace FW91 show in Milan, lip-synching Freedom 90.

by Anonymousreply 27October 14, 2018 4:56 PM

You're right r25, and what Anna Wintour started has been made even worse by social media, especially Instagram, and the rise of celebrity culture. That makes it hard to develop new models from the ground up today, but even if they're not household names there are still plenty of great young models.

by Anonymousreply 28October 14, 2018 4:57 PM

R27, Naomi is so right, and she often comments on the rise of celeb models and celebs as models, and supports lots of the younger models.

Loved that video, r26. They were all fabulous, and I was surprised by how gorgeous Carla Bruni was and what a hot piece Kate Moss was, but for sheer, unadulterated modeliciouseness, Linda E takes the cake...

by Anonymousreply 31October 14, 2018 6:21 PM

HA - I remember my mother and aunt drooling over George Michael in the I Want Your Sex video when they thought he was straight. I wasn't allowed to watch the video at the time. Were the supermodels in that one also?

Today's models are all tacky offspring of reality celebs. It's just a gross moment in history. Fuck Kris Jenner, the mother whore of Babylon.

by Anonymousreply 35October 14, 2018 7:08 PM

That’s it...a gross moment in history....Oy...

by Anonymousreply 36October 14, 2018 7:33 PM

The fashion industry ended the supermodel era when they realized that the models got more attention than the clothes they were supposed to sell.

by Anonymousreply 37October 14, 2018 7:35 PM

Well, this new crop of nespotic wanna be telebrities won’t solve that...

by Anonymousreply 38October 14, 2018 7:40 PM

Bella and Kendal are basic bitches whose success is due exclusively to nepotism, they would have never had a chance back in the glorious 90's.

by Anonymousreply 39October 14, 2018 7:44 PM

It used to be supermodels advertised clothes, perfume, etc. Now it's actresses - they ate the supermodels' jobs.

by Anonymousreply 40October 14, 2018 7:51 PM

Twiggy was one of the first supermodels, and it turned out she could sing, dance and act in the movie "The Boyfriend" and on Broadway in "My One and Only". Not that many of the others could do that, but lately people who try to shock like the Kardashians, who aren't nearly as beautiful, have found a way to monetize this kind of being a celebrity of being famous for being famous.

by Anonymousreply 41October 14, 2018 8:00 PM

Shana Zadrick was underrated. She was Cindy meets Linda, Raquel Welch meets Sophia Loren, with a little of my favorite drag queen, the late Tandi Andrews, thrown in.

To be honest r34, it's really a Vogue video editorial, the focus of which is actually the clothes, that being the point of modelling. Some of those girls are actually great though.

by Anonymousreply 44October 14, 2018 8:09 PM

The SS19 Moschino show was pretty great and has some of the "new" top models (just ignore Bella and Gigi and the awful Kendall). I don't think we'll ever have supermodels again though, they were of their moment.

R26 the 90s supermodels are gorgeously stunning. Too bad there won’t be another generation of supermodels that can match their beauty and culture impacts. They were not stars, they were megastars goddesses of fashion world. Naomi has the best catwalking. Cindy was the prettiest one. Claudia had the best bod.

by Anonymousreply 46October 14, 2018 8:16 PM

You have to watch to the end of this to find out WHET to the supermodels - and appreciate some of the newer ones! Versace SS18. (Again, apologies for Bella, Gigi and Kendall).

by Anonymousreply 54October 15, 2018 10:26 AM

I just read up about the Fashion Cafe. My word! That whole sleazy business side is one thing that thankfully doesn't prey on models today. One of the Buti brothers was married to the Czech model Daniela Pestova. The Slav models from behind the Iron Curtain were the next phenomenon in modelling, after the initial wave of the original supers.

Eva Herzigova was a commercial model rather than a high fashion one, but this ad is a classic.

R47 most of those girls looked like they were playing dress up. Cindy's daughter, Kaia is a lesser version of her mother and looks like a little girl. Sad models and clothes.

by Anonymousreply 59October 15, 2018 6:41 PM

Wundy Gurl will always be my favorite.

"Hi! Girlz Data!"

by Anonymousreply 60October 15, 2018 6:44 PM

I actually love the Versace SS18 show, r59 and Cindy's daughter was a little girl, pretty much, she'd just turned 16. As a tribute to Gianni, it was awesome. It also had some older 2000s models. I'm a lesbian, and that show is very sexy for me.

The models today are told to look serious, so as not to distract from the clothes.

by Anonymousreply 61October 15, 2018 6:52 PM

I'm like amazing.

by Anonymousreply 62October 15, 2018 6:55 PM

Yeah r59, contrast Kaia (and her fellow models) at r47 to her mom (and her fellow models) at r26. This new crop is almost laughable in comparison...
