Well R94 After what Pratt/JFP were doing at Y&R and Dena/Josh over at Days people thought that Mal and Ron based off their credentials would come in and save the day at their respective shows but at least in Pratt/JFP case they were at least hitting 5 mil viewers at different times and weren't intentionally trying sink Y&R the way Josh/Dena were over at Days when they took over. Look at both shows now terrible ratings, Y&R struggling to stay over 4 mil in viewers and Days struggling to reach 2.2 mil viewers, awful demos,new lows and GH is at times beating Y&R in demos and about the only time Days has been able to surpass GH is when GH is running old repeats.

The problem is that Y&R fans were not used to what other soap fans had been dealing with since the mid 90s - that being a revolving door of producers/writers who would change the shows at whim.

Mal is a mess. Ron is not a mess over at Days. Days looks like itself and is using its history, not Y&R. The only people who have issues with Ron are idiot fanbases and couple shippers who aren't getting what they want. As for the ratings, sometimes it takes a minute for ratings to turn around.

Mal doesn't know how to write American soap opera and it shows every day. I don't understand writers who refuse to use a show's history and create new characters instead of using the characters already on the canvas. So don't lump Mal and Ron into the same category. They may know each other, just because they're both British and what they do, but to my knowledge they've never worked together on the same soap opera at the same time. Little has worked at both Hollyoaks and Corrie Mal has never been involved with either of those shows. Their only common soap is EastEnders, but Mal stopped having any involvement with EE by 2004, and Little didn't arrive as a storyliner there until 2010.

She was not horrid. She was, however, not what the show needed.

Kay and Sally were good at restoring a particular tone to some characters, but story didn't move in the way it needed to move. This was often the case with Claire Labine's writing style, too. Great at character and tone, but a great soap strikes a balance between those things and plot twists. When it's done right both feed into each other. Sally and Kay tried to tweak things back to Bell era Y&R, but as many people here said, Abbott breakfasts are not a storyline.

Sony and CBS negotiated the price of Y&R based on the ratings at the time of the negotiation. There is a good faith effort on the part of Sony that the show will maintain a certain rating and there are penalties if it falls below a certain rating. It is well known that CBS low-balled on the Y&R licensing fee and Sony agreed but with the promise of a three year (guaranteed - because there are always outs) pickup, plus there were some other parts of the deal involving primetime that are irrelevant to this discussion.

So the bottom line, even though the ratings are in the toilet, Y&R was always going to have to deal with budget cuts because of the reduced licensing fee. CBS used to pay a million dollars for a week of episodes, now it's something like $650,000 for a week of episodes. Poor Days is getting by at a little over $500,000 a week.

Y&R, while still being #1 of 4 soaps, has lower demos now than all those soaps cancelled before it (#RIP GL ATWT AMC OLTL). That is not a good sign. The show is on borrowed, very borrowed time. Don’t expect another renewal especially with a new regime at CBS.

I wish some network would take a chance on a pre-primetime daily half hour soap. And just test it out to see if people will watch it.

Serials and serialized programming is never going to die, however if you want a 5 day a week soap I think you have to go to the audience instead of waiting for the audience to come to you.

I think Michael Mealor is doing fine in the acting department. He especially did a nice job of conveying Kyle's delight at Billy being ousted for stealing funds from Jabot.

Biggest problem is that he doesn't have romantic chemistry with any of the women they've tried pairing him with. Has friendship chemistry however, so he comes off as the gay best friend instead. Plus for a while there, they were writing him as the scheming gay.

If they don't find a female that he has the sexual heat with, I wouldn't be surprised if they write him off. Alternately, they could bring back Phillip III and pair Kyle with him.

I recall back in 1999, Days SORASED its younger characters who were children of established characters -- Shawn-Douglas, Belle and Phillip while bringing in a various other teens like Chloe and Mimi to create a teen set. Many older viewers derided this teen set taking over such a large chunk of airtime. Whether that was the right decision is still up for debate, but it sent a strong message the show was committed to the future.

The decision did bring in a lot of younger viewers, many of whom are still watching Days today.

I think the main issue is that Cassie - which includes twin Mariah - was already 6-years old when Noah was born. And since they never SORASed her, we have to work with Camryn being 28 now. With that, Noah should should look at least a few years younger than her, say 25-26. Recall, they only SORASed Noah after Cassie had died. But now that Mariah's on the canvas, they should undo some of that rapid age increase. (Adamson is five years older than Camryn, and he looks it, imo.)

I get it too. .. Especially if you take into consideration that this has been 30 years in the making. .. Scotty is one of those roles that should have been something interesting. He went between Sheila and Lauren. He was hidden away for years. He could have been an interesting bad boy with lingering mama issues, but instead, they've cast him terribly as an adult every time. Bland, boring.

Blair Redford was a CW hair model, and I don't know WHAT the fuck they were trying to do with the most recent Scott, but he never clicked, not even for a minute.

In the past, whenever the subject of NuReturns was brought up, Scotty was often one of the characters near the top of the list. Fans were exceedingly interested in this character.

But boy, did they fail on that front.

And while Sally wrote the character, executive producer Mal has to bear responsibility for casting Daniel Hall. So entirely forgettable.

The son of Scott Grainger and Lauren Fenmore should have been drop dead gorgeous, with Dad's smarts with Mom's savvy.

On another note, in an exit interview type article when Jack Smith left Y&R, he told SOD that he'd had it on his drawing board to make Scotty gay. .. This may have been why Blair Redford's Scotty never had any kind of romantic relationship during the six months he was in the role.

Literally, anything would have been better than what they did.
