My brother is like this. He's not on drugs, he's not mentally ill. He's 37 years old. He hasn't had a job in 11 years. He lives with our mother and plays video games all night and sleeps all day. My uncle is mentally ill and went through these steps and lived in his own apartment and worked at Target for 10 years. The county stopped monitoring him and he stopped his meds and spiraled downward, getting fired and becoming homeless. Bring back institutions and and bring back a mental health SYSTEM!

I have a nephew who APPEARS to be mentally stable, and he is not a drug addict or drinker, so from the outside he would provoke a response like OP's. But he DOES have mental problems - undiagnosed - and sadly he will never try to get help them, because he doesn't believe in mental illness. He also doesn't work, or try to seek work. He lives with his father, and assists him. He is 32, and a very handsome guy. He was in the army for 4 years, but was never deployed. I would say (as someone without credentials), that he is definitely clinically depressed, and that he might have some elements of mild schizophrenia. He is very bright, but doesn't follow through on projects or with finishing his schooling. He dabbles in courses at community college, but drops them if he thinks the professor is biased. He is susceptible to white nationalist propaganda, but has not joined any sort of group that I can tell. It's heartbreaking. He collects weapons, and some distant relatives have approached my sister (from whom he's estranged) concerned that he will "go postal" at some point. I don't see that happening - more likely he would commit suicide. He shuts down when people try to encourage him to get help, and will stop talking to them or responding to phone calls or texts.

What happens to these people when their parents die and there's nobody to help them any more?

I have a relative whose father trained him to join the family business. It is very well paying and he could make a ton of money even as a young man. It's also a fun job that he's very good at. His father recently got a big contract and the customer offered to hire the son as well. This would be a ton of money for him. He refuses to do that or anything else and his father continues to support him.

His father never criticizes his behavior and they both are verbally abusive to his mother. He recently threw a tantrum because he stole from his mother and got caught. When she asked for her things back, he smashed up thousands of dollars of her belongings. The father thinks this is great because he has trained this guy from infancy to hate his mother. I've never seen anything like it.

The father is getting older and starting to have health issues. I'd love to know what Junior thinks he's going to do after his father passes. Unfortunately the mother's health is bad too and she's stuck there. It's like none of them think about the future.
