Was this high drama really one of the iconic American sports moments?
Tell me about Kerri Strug's Olympic vault
by Anonymous | reply 106 | October 24, 2018 12:55 AM |
I wish Strug would have fallen off at the end.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | September 5, 2018 2:43 AM |
Stupid IOC. Here's another attempt at the video.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 5, 2018 2:45 AM |
The second vault was unnecessary. But NBC got a narrative, and that’s all that matters about the Olympics.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 5, 2018 2:47 AM |
Oh Kerri, how sad that you have to keep posting about something that happened decades ago. Move on!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 5, 2018 2:48 AM |
It was pretty damn dramatic, OP.
Every single DLer was watching and let out a Princess Diana scream at the end.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 5, 2018 2:55 AM |
Dominique Moceanu choked by sitting down her two vaults. I think the pressure finally got to her.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 5, 2018 3:04 AM |
One of the most surprising victories over the Russians after the Miracle on Ice.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 5, 2018 3:20 AM |
It was such a dramatic television moment. The Olympics were a bigger thing back in the 90s. My god, I remember it was such a dramatic win people were driving up and down waving the American flag.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 5, 2018 3:32 AM |
It was a pretty big deal at the time.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 5, 2018 4:12 AM |
Her coach took her into the dressing room...and molested her.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 5, 2018 4:22 AM |
Her vault was heroic, but her voice was obnoxious.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 5, 2018 4:23 AM |
High Olympic drama.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 5, 2018 4:58 AM |
I 🤷‍♀️ at Strug.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 5, 2018 5:03 AM |
Didn't she end up making millions in endorsements?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 5, 2018 5:05 AM |
The BEST Olympic moment for me, ever. I was crying after she stuck the landing.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 5, 2018 5:29 AM |
Mary, R15!!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 5, 2018 2:31 PM |
I remember this -- watching it in real time on the East Coast, on the little television set in my grandmother's kitchen. Yes, it was shocking and moving.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 5, 2018 4:51 PM |
R15 = Bobby Hill
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 5, 2018 5:02 PM |
It was heroic at the time, but unnecessary in retrospect.
The Karoylis would have gotten raked over the coals these days for coaxing an already injured athlete to complete a dangerous vault essentially on one foot.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 22, 2018 1:07 AM |
“You can do it!”
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 22, 2018 1:19 AM |
It was worth it just to watch Khorkina cry after.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 22, 2018 3:25 AM |
Whatever happened to Kerri?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 22, 2018 3:37 AM |
A dingo ate her, R22.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 22, 2018 3:47 AM |
It was one of the times that I felt glad to see something so moving on live TV. And it was one of the times that don't exist anymore, that I felt proud to be an American.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 22, 2018 3:54 AM |
It was a pretty epic moment.
I remember the competition vividly. You couldn't have written a more Hollywood Olympic story: First ever team gold for America, defeating the longstanding Russian powerhouse in front of a home crowd, boiled down to one defining moment of sacrifice and courage from the often overlooked athlete who always choked under pressure.
The narrative seemed taken right from a screenplay pitch, it was that perfectly structured.
I remember wondering just how much the NBC execs were salivating with $$$ in their eyes, watching this event unfold before them.
I think, for me, it was that last Olympics that still felt like it was about sport and not the blatant corporate cash grab it's so obviously is now.
Too bad all the gymnasts went on to be Christian fraus (aside from Amy Chow).
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 22, 2018 5:10 AM |
Amy Chow ended up being the most successful and accomplished of them all, R25. She's a pediatrician, married, and does pole vaulting, diving, and piano playing as a side hobby.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 23, 2018 6:59 PM |
Shannon Miller ended up being the most pathetic. Getting divorced from a gay man, having a stalker, and terrible plastic surgery to boot!
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 23, 2018 7:01 PM |
It was dramatic. IIRC, the controversy surrounded the decision by Strug & her coach, Bela Karolyi, to perform while injured (ankle). The thinking was that Strug could have really made her injury worse and that the coach was uncaring about Strug, who was a child.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 23, 2018 8:08 PM |
Iconic? Yes. Dramatic? Yes. Heroic? Not necessarily.
What Kerri did (and she'll even tell you this herself) was nothing more than any other athlete out there would have done. They also didn't know in the moment how bad her injury was. She thought she just sprained something. She was able to walk on it and didn't realize it was the adrenaline getting her though.
No, the vault wasn't even necessary... but they also didn't know it at the time.. so in essence it was necessary (to them in the moment) that she had to.
And no, there wasn't any controversy over Bela encouraging Kerri to do the fault. Quite the opposite in fact. I don't know where someone would get that
I also don't think Moceanu choked. She had an injury and they Mary Lee Tracy also made a mistake during Moceanu's warm up vaults. She put the wrong pad around the spring board, which she wasn't used to.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 23, 2018 8:23 PM |
R29 those gymnast threads were some of the funniest threads on DL. Well, minus the Kerri one. She ruins everything.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 23, 2018 8:24 PM |
Only on datalounge are the most iconic and historically important sporting events of the century considered to be things like:
Kerri Strug's vault, Monica Seles getting stabbed, Nancy vs Tonya, Mary Decker getting tripped by Zola Budd!
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 23, 2018 8:27 PM |
Peasant, R21. I cry because Americans cheat. But I cry in to my big bags of money now.
You like my fun bags?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 23, 2018 8:39 PM |
What bags, Khorkina? Do you mean those mosquito bites you call tits?

Amy Chow is also the only one from that team who's life has absolutely nothing to do with and doesn't revolve around gymnastics. It turned out a friend of mine started taking her kid to a new Pediatrician. It ended up being Amy Chow. Her daughter is also a gymnast (she's 6 so didn't know who Chow was). They talked about how the little girl was a gymnast and Amy asked her questions relating to her activities in the sport, etc.... and Amy never once mentioned that she was a gymnast let alone an Olympic Gold Medalist.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 23, 2018 8:51 PM |
Yeah, Amy was a wonder kid for sure. Must've been weird for her to be surrounded by all her Jesus freak teammates who only lived in their gymnastic bubble.
Here's a nice interview on her. As suspected, she really didn't give much of a shit about the competitions or medals.
Although she has kids now, I wouldn't classify her as a frau. She's obviously a very curious person who likes to learn and grow. Fraus just stay in their mommy sandbox.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 23, 2018 9:17 PM |
Her vaginal odor filled the stadium. Her pussy stinks Bad.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 23, 2018 9:21 PM |
Both Dominique Dawes and Shannon Miller ended up being such huge disappointments.
Idolized them as a kid (I know, Mary!) and they're such huge, damn fraus on Facebook, going on and on about the miracle of being a mother and having kids!
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 23, 2018 9:25 PM |
R42 to hear Dominique Dawes talk about finding God is really... odd. I mean, nothing against her finding religion but it's the way that she talks about it that reads creepy. Also, I'll never get over the fact that she was live Instagramming her miscarriage.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 23, 2018 9:28 PM |
[quote] Must've been weird for her to be surrounded by all her Jesus freak teammates who only lived in their gymnastic bubble.
Oh, she had a lot of fun with them... mostly without them knowing. Amy is smart, obviously. And with that intelligence comes a quick wit and a dry, sarcastic, sense of humor. She would often, "joke" with her teammates while on tour... at their own expenses.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 23, 2018 9:30 PM |
It was amazing
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 23, 2018 9:31 PM |
Shannon grew up in Oklahoma with a "Christian Scientist" mother. One didn't need a crystal ball to see how she'd turn out. Being a frau was her destiny.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 23, 2018 9:31 PM |
Dominique Dawes and Shannon Miller always had a rivalry going.
It's no surprise that they are not currently trying to out-frau one another.

Rivalry? Please sit down and STFU about shit you know nothing about. There was no, "rivalry." You can't have a "rivalry" with someone who chokes not once but twice in a row at the biggest competition on the same event.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | September 23, 2018 9:34 PM |
Certainly nobody can rival you in terrible plastic surgery, Shannon!
I miss your old schnozz though.

An example of a Shannon Miller rimjob for the judges, where she received an improbably high score despite an error that was bigger than her bangs and nose.

I'll be contrarian and say I find these Olympic athletes creepy as fuck. Especially in ice skating or gymnastics. They've been trained since birth to be these perfect performing machines. They're probably all psycho from child abuse.

R62 = Moceanu
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 24, 2018 12:45 AM |
I find this photo so hilariously insightful into their individual personalities...
Moceanu trying to look like a Kardashian Kerri in her frumpy 80s prom dress (her idea of dressing up) Amanda giving off cold Stepford Wives Frau-ness Jaycie fading into the background like an afterthought with her wallpaper patterned dress Dawes trying to be bold, but coming off looking basic Amy looking so over this shit and ready to get back to her practice
And Shannon....haha...channeling Annette Bening Frau-ness from American Beauty...sexual repression yearning to break the cold perfectionist exterior of Christian, suburban housewife living.
Or...sometimes a picture is just a picture.

she received the deduction for the error, it wasn't Miller's fault it was only .3. It's like in 1984 when Mary Lou put her hand down on FX in team finals, NOW it is considered a fall but in 1984 it was only .1

Also notice how much distance there is between Kerri and the rest of them in that photo at R66. They hated her back then and they still hate her.
Don't worry... she has no use for them either.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | September 24, 2018 1:58 AM |

I'm surprised if Chow is a Dem.

I think Miller, Strug, Borden, and Moceanu are hardcore Rethugs. Miller, Strug and Borden for sure.
I can't imagine Chow is a one. She seems too smart and curious to buy into that kind of ideology. Plus, she was born and raised in San Jose, grew up in a diverse environment, went to Stanford for school, and stills lives in Northern Cali. Not exactly the markings of an ultra-conservative. But of course, you can never really tell. She might be. Old school Chinese immigrants can be very politically conservative.
I think Phelps is the wildcard...but she grew up in the midwest and trained with Borden, so she's probably of their ilk too.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | September 24, 2018 2:59 AM |
R82 well Borden grew up and trained in OH so it could be a toss up but something about her screams Rethug Frau.
Jaycie lives in AZ and is besties with Borden so I'll just assume she's a Rethug too.

Kerri Strug was actually the most physically displeasing gymnast to watch from the entire team. Poor form and no dance ability or elegance. She had power in her tumbling and vaults, but that was about it. She was easier to watch in 1992 through 1994.

Bela yelling "You can do it, Kerri" has to be one of the iconic and legendary US Olympic moments ever.
Gymnastics was so much more fun to watch back then. It's damn near depressing now, given the deteriorating quality of the sport and all of the terrible abuse scandals that have come to light.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | October 23, 2018 7:43 PM |
Since OP's video is unavailable now, here is a link to all of the drama as it unfolded.
I always wonder if Moceanu secretly hoped Strug would fall twice. They were neck-and-neck for that third All-Around spot afterall.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | October 23, 2018 7:53 PM |
I think all Moceanu was hoping for was not to get slapped by Bela or her parents for falling herself.
If you read her memoir, she was in constant fear of disappointing Bela or her strict Romanian father in competition. Things were not all hugs and high-fives behind closed doors.
You can see it on her face at the Olympics. Even when she hit a routine, there was no happiness, only relief on herself, as if she dodged a bullet.
