by Anonymousreply 5August 21, 2018 8:29 PM

Ok ... what does it mean RE: the Manafort jury? Help me, DL!

by Anonymousreply 6August 21, 2018 8:30 PM

8 counts of guilt and a mistral on the other 10.

by Anonymousreply 7August 21, 2018 8:34 PM

What a bad fucking day for Cheetolini.

by Anonymousreply 8August 21, 2018 8:35 PM

Guilty of five counts of tax fraud. What of the other three counts?

by Anonymousreply 9August 21, 2018 8:37 PM

guilty on the tax fraud charges

by Anonymousreply 10August 21, 2018 8:37 PM

Trump must be stroking out right about now

by Anonymousreply 11August 21, 2018 8:39 PM

Guilty on all eight counts!

by Anonymousreply 12August 21, 2018 8:40 PM

Counts 1-5 tax evasion. 6 — false statement to bank. 7 - causing unlawful corp camp contrib. 8 - making an excessive campaign contribution.

by Anonymousreply 13August 21, 2018 8:40 PM

You're in the shithouse now pal.

by Anonymousreply 14August 21, 2018 8:41 PM

Apparently the judge can still declare a mistrial on the entire case if he chooses.

by Anonymousreply 15August 21, 2018 8:41 PM

So with an erratic man like Donald Trump charging around the Oval Office, this has to be a really bad day.... he must be unhinged even for him... both bag man in the same afternoon.

I'd almost feel sorry for the staff, except they enable all this, so this is working out very nicely for them.

by Anonymousreply 16August 21, 2018 8:42 PM

A mistrial would surely be the last thing the judge would do... sends a terrible message to juries.

by Anonymousreply 17August 21, 2018 8:42 PM

R15, Mueller would then get to try the case before a different judge.

by Anonymousreply 18August 21, 2018 8:43 PM

Trump will be fine. He's got one of his Klan rallies to attend tonight.

by Anonymousreply 19August 21, 2018 8:43 PM

Something about the number 8.

by Anonymousreply 25August 21, 2018 8:52 PM

Michael Cohen says he was directed to violate campaign law at the direction of the candidate. At the same candidate's direction, he said he paid $130,000 to somebody to keep them quiet, which was later repaid by the candidate.

by Anonymousreply 28August 21, 2018 8:52 PM

8 is the magic number today... Cohen plead guilty to 8 counts today.

by Anonymousreply 44August 21, 2018 9:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 45August 21, 2018 9:02 PM

I'm not going to watch coverage of the rally, because I'm already sick and don't need to be sicker, but I am...kinda looking forward to the soundbites.

by Anonymousreply 46August 21, 2018 9:02 PM

Rick Wilson ‏Verified account @TheRickWilson

Oh, MAN is Trump going to lose his damn mind at the rally tonight.

Brace for massive tweetkakke in the next 24 hours.

by Anonymousreply 47August 21, 2018 9:03 PM

I just heard a pundit say now that there was a mistrial on 10 counts he can now be tried on those counts at the State level which obviously means no pardon.

by Anonymousreply 48August 21, 2018 9:04 PM

On the serious, if Manafort faces 80 years in prison just for what he's already been convicted of, will they both to retry him for the other counts, especially with a second set of charges hanging over his head.

As an aside, Virginia's lieutenant governor is a former prosecutor in the EDVA. You can see him beaming on Twitter right now.

by Anonymousreply 49August 21, 2018 9:05 PM

r33 - I’m pretty sure you meant the magic bean. A clitoris is not shaped like an almond. It’s more like an hooded pea than anything. Perhaps the magic legume would be even more appropriate. Either way, it’s a horrible image to contemplate.

by Anonymousreply 50August 21, 2018 9:05 PM

R17 This judge has been anything but predictable

by Anonymousreply 51August 21, 2018 9:05 PM

He will be tried in another court anyway. Unless he suddenly dies now, he will die in prison.

by Anonymousreply 52August 21, 2018 9:06 PM

R48. yes I think they will retry him. Plus that is if he get the max. He may not get the max of all those counts. I don't expect 80 years.

by Anonymousreply 53August 21, 2018 9:07 PM

T-Rump's rally meanderings and tweets will just be his dreary boilerplate: Dems are crooked, Mueller is on a witch hunt, he himself should fire/pardon everyone concerned, etc.

by Anonymousreply 54August 21, 2018 9:07 PM

They are talking about impeachment on cnbc, and how the markets will react

I think impeachment is NEXT! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 55August 21, 2018 9:07 PM

This is the beginning of this mess and it will get much worse for Trump and his family. Sarah should make sure she has a good attorney.

by Anonymousreply 56August 21, 2018 9:08 PM

Wait, the media is actually using the i-word now?

by Anonymousreply 57August 21, 2018 9:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 67August 21, 2018 9:19 PM

Another pundit stated that it looks like Cohen definitely cooperated with the Feds because the sentence he got (5 years?) was way too light for those charges and would only have been given to him if he basically flipped.

by Anonymousreply 68August 21, 2018 9:19 PM

Honestly, him saying that Trump told him to pay her off is really all they needed him to do.

If this world was sane, there would be articles of impeachment before the House tomorrow.

Can someone clear something up for me re: the 10 counts that were declared a mistrial?

If he had been convicted or acquitted would it have meant that he couldn't be tried again at the State level for those same crimes?

by Anonymousreply 81August 21, 2018 9:34 PM

by Anonymousreply 94August 21, 2018 10:09 PM

The Republican talking point is Trump was vindicated today. Nothing today had anything to do with collusion, so the President has been exonerated and Mueller should stop.

Seriously. That's what every single one of them on Twitter and TV is saying right now.

by Anonymousreply 95August 21, 2018 10:15 PM

I wonder if Manafort and Cohen are going to be cellies? And who gets the top bunk ... if you know what I mean.

by Anonymousreply 96August 21, 2018 10:15 PM

That's hilariously pathetic, R95. There's no way they can stop the tide.

R106, it’s a guideline, not settled law. The guideline doesn’t create legal rights—Trump can’t use it as a defense if he is, in fact, indicted.

by Anonymousreply 119August 21, 2018 10:47 PM

Saw this on Twitter:

Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen, and Duncan Hunter walk into a prison...that's not a joke, it's the last two hours.

by Anonymousreply 120August 21, 2018 10:57 PM

NO COLLUSION. Nothing to do with Russia ... These are all short-term claims that any normal person would stay clear of since these claims may bite you in the ass later on. But then Republicans can say anything and the media doesn't nail them on what they've said in the past. That's only reserved for Democrats.

People should be allowed to SLAP these Republicans viciously for being stupid, hypocritical jackasses.

And none of this deep and sordid mess could have been told before November, 2016? The FBI, CIA, and major media, had to know some of it.

by Anonymousreply 134August 21, 2018 11:25 PM

Jeffrey Toobin, who has a lot of credibility and smarts said that the "president can't be indicted" is bullshit. It's not ssettled law, it has been a "tradition" but it is definitely not law.

Trump folks are worried about impeachment more than before. The thinking goes like this: this is something tangible, not a theoretical. And it didn't come from Mueller. Does not mean it will happen, but this has moved to a different stage in their minds.

by Anonymousreply 152August 21, 2018 11:52 PM

Trumpists going all in attacking Cohen’s credibility. Might not be the smartest strategy considering Cohen’s penchant for taping and otherwise documenting his dealings with Trump.

I didn’t understand why Mueller handed the Cohen stuff over to NY, but it turned out to be a brilliant move. Trump can’t blame this on the "discredited Mueller" and his "disgraceful witch hunt".

by Anonymousreply 156August 21, 2018 11:59 PM

This West Virginia rally is a very strange affair. Low energy, one might say. The president’s cadences are kind of off, even more than usual. He’s clearly very distracted.

I also heard it from another source that both Jared and Ivanka are using Jared's father to talk to the FBI and are telling them everything.

Also, Ivanka and Kellyanne are the usual suspects when it comes to leakers in the White House.

Jefferson Beauregard Sessions was deep in on that whole RNC convention business. I believe he came clean to Mueller and Rosenstein and is cooperating with them.

by Anonymousreply 184August 22, 2018 1:24 AM

Apparently, the reason Duncan Hunter was stealing from his campaign was because he was broke. Like, insufficient funds fees against his personal account broke.

And his wife told him to buy a pair of shorts at a pro shop, which would expensed to the campaign as "golf balls for wounded warriors."

Party of fiscal responsibility.

West Virginia has the highest per capita drug-related death rate in the U.S. In 2015, the state saw 41.5 deaths per 100,000 people attributed to drug use. Researchers from the CDC found that the increase in drug-related deaths in West Virginia from 2014 to 2015 was considered statistically significant, with an increase of 16.9 percent. While the rest of the country wrestles with an alarming rate of illicit drug use, West Virginia is truly on the front lines of this battle.

by Anonymousreply 193August 22, 2018 1:37 AM

I missed some of Lanny's answer--did he intimate that Cohen will tell Mueller Trump knew about hacking in advance?

by Anonymousreply 194August 22, 2018 1:37 AM

Lanny Davis, on Rachel Maddow, suggests strongly that his client Michael Cohen has information for Mueller on Trump campaign collusion with Russia and Trump’s knowledge of plans for Russian hacking before the hacking occurred.

I agree, r194. I caught the very end of the interview.

by Anonymousreply 199August 22, 2018 1:45 AM

Davis was very careful not to give information that is currently under litigation but his main points were:

Cohen was not so much interested in cooperation vs. simple plea as he was in simply vying for the truth

Mueller will be very interested in hearing other things Cohen needs to say

Trump directed the commission of a crime and the law is very specific about people who direct others to commit a crime. And the evidence is: why didn’t trump just sign a check? And the answer is “because he knew he was doing something illegal and too close to the election.”

Rachel added that trump had to know he was being sleazy because he chose a very difficult solution - having his lawyer get a loan on his mortgage by commiting another crime (not declaring other liabilities that would have impeded the loan) to enable the presidents criminal request.

Just now....

Chris Cuomo: Do you believe that Michael Cohen has anything to offer; that he has new information for the special counsel or the NY Attorney General, of wrongdoing or even criminal activity?

Lanny Davis: I do believe he does. The NY Attorney General has the jurisdiction to look into the Trump Foundation. Michael Cohen, being the attorney for Donald Trump for many many years, knows almost everything about Mr. Tump and we'll see whether the level of corruption alleged concerning the Trump Foundation is a topic of concern for the NY Attorney General. I do believe that he has information about Mr. Trump that would be of interest both in Washington and NY state.

by Anonymousreply 220August 22, 2018 2:17 AM

That is a great question, R217 - Why didn't he? From the stories that have been told, Trump always treated Cohen like crap. It makes no sense. He expects blind loyalty, then is surprised when he doesn't get it in return after he acts like a monster.

by Anonymousreply 221August 22, 2018 2:18 AM

Fun note: one way Cohen avoided paying taxes was not reporting the $30,000 he got for brokering the sale of a Birkin bag.

Rick Santorum came across as even more of a moron than usual with Anderson tonight. Anderson was quite amusing at his reactions to Santorum’s idiocy, too.

by Anonymousreply 223August 22, 2018 2:19 AM

R217 I think the answer to that is quite simple. Dotard has lived a life where he's treated everyone like crap and backstabbed everyone and gotten away with it.

Why would he now start behaving differently when life has told him he doesn't need to ever worry about any of it?

by Anonymousreply 224August 22, 2018 2:20 AM

BREAKING NEWS:

Michael Cohen attorney Lanny Davis: "Mr. Cohen has knowledge on certain subjects that should be of interest to the special counsel and is more than happy to tell the special counsel all that he knows, not just about the obvious possibility of a conspiracy to collude and corrupt the American democracy system in the 2016 election which the Trump Tower meeting was all about, but also knowledge about the computer crime of hacking and whether or not Mr. Trump knew ahead of time about that crime and even cheered it on."

Does Trump actually still think this is about collusion? All along I've said Mueller is following the money trails. The Russian thing is a red herring.

by Anonymousreply 248August 22, 2018 2:52 AM

R217, Trump couldn't be nice to anyone if his life depended on it. One of the scariest things about him is that he's not only destructive, he's self-destructive. Ultimately, he's driven to destroy everything. He'll never stop. That's one of the many reason he cannot remain in office.

by Anonymousreply 249August 22, 2018 2:55 AM

I don't want Trump to step down, R250. I want him and his grifter family hauled out of the White House in handcuffs.

by Anonymousreply 251August 22, 2018 2:59 AM

Oh, Repugs will just blow this off, r247. Nothing that Cohen may reveal about Trump no matter how unsavory and/or illegal, no amount of Trump minion convictions, will get a peep from Repugs. They have to keep excusing him - too many of them are compromised by Russia too. And they are terrified of pissing off Trump's vociferous base. Besides, why should they? They are counting on Russia delivering the next election to them, no matter how bad enabling Trump makes them look.

by Anonymousreply 252August 22, 2018 2:59 AM

Repugs tonight are going all in on the notion that the Manafort and Cohen cases are terrible injustices because they have nothing to do with Russian collusion, R248. Jason Chaffetz, filling in for Laura Ingraham on FOX, kept stressing that the only reason Manafort was prosecuted is because he entered Trump’s orbit — as if Manafort stealing mlllions from American taxpayers is inconsequential.

“The party of law and order” is proving anything but.

by Anonymousreply 255August 22, 2018 3:02 AM

r248 It is about collusion. Putin has sexual and financial corruption blackmail material on Trump. That is why Trump takes orders from Putin. It is also why Trump constantly screams "no collusion" and "witch hunt". Trump knows the money trail leads straight to his fat, stinking ass.

by Anonymousreply 256August 22, 2018 3:03 AM

by Anonymousreply 258August 22, 2018 3:05 AM

You think he'll step down? I think they'll have to send the marines into the White House to drag him out Trump cannot do anything with grace or decency.

by Anonymousreply 259August 22, 2018 3:05 AM

Crazy Theory of Mine: Is it possible that Cohen came forward because he's been persuaded he might be pardoned? NOT by Trump, but by his lawyer, Lanny Davis? Maybe Davis convinced Cohen that if he comes forward with EVERYTHING he knows, and it's enough to end Trump's presidency, Trump's successor will pardon him. Yes, he may have to spend some time in jail, but he would go down in history as someone who eventually came forward and did the right thing, not a traitor.

It was mentioned, more than once, that Cohen gave information he did not have to give. He didn't have to mention the president, but he did. Why?

Again, just a crazy theory.

Anybody else think this is possible?

As if that’s not enough, the repugs constantly grift off the veterans, I mean CONSTANTLY, through fake charities, fund drives, pillaging the VA and then hit them up for donations.

And yet they are not using their power to stop this nonsense. Veterans are probably the most powerful group outside of seniors yet they get ripped off again and again.

This Duncan guy is just the latest in a long line of Republicans who use, defraud and fleece veterans.

I agree. I thought from the beginning that, if the screw turned far enough, he would resign under the pretense of a health issue. Protecting his ego is paramount, more important than the security of the United States or the interests of his supporters. He’s a coward without compunction and would take the easy way out without a second thought.

That why I half expect all this drama to end with a whimper. Trump is slime, but he’s not dumb, and he will know when he’s out of options or too close to real trouble. I could see him abruptly and simply quitting with minimal elaboration, treating this like just like one of his innumerable bankruptcy failures. He has no real connection to the office or his role, certainly no sense of moral obligation or duty. Bail, move on.

My only consolation through this is believing that Trump never wanted to be president, and that he’s probably been utterly miserable with the stress of the job (when he’s not napping, golfing or watching TV) and the constant scrutiny. He could’ve had a nice retirement with lots of golf, travel, eating his fucking Big Macs in peace and screwing porn stars. He took a bet and lost by winning. Hope you regret it, prick.

@jdawsey1 Asked Paul Ryan's office for their reaction to today's news. Here's the statement I just got. "We are aware of Mr. Cohen’s guilty plea to these serious charges. We will need more information than is currently available at this point.”

by Anonymousreply 308August 22, 2018 5:17 AM

Thank you for that, R307, I remehow thankful it made me during dark days.

I am the OP of the first few threads. Long before I first posted, way back in late November and December 2016 actually, and in January 2017, I felt like I was the only one who could see that the voting totals for Florida and several other states had been literally changed. There was a statistician who had written an article about it (who has now presented evidence and been interviewed by Robert Mueller), but all my friends and certainly all the media had bought hook-line-and-sinker the Putin/Stein/Sanders-encouraged line that this was only about the White Working Class and that was what we had to fix; that it was nothing to do with Russia.

It took a long time for liberal, leftist people in my life, or in the media, to start mentioning Russian involvement and, eventually, treason. Months and months. They (we) are still pussy-footing around the evidence that the vote totals were changed.

DataLounge was one of the first places that dared to speak the word “treason”, because bots and the brainwashed left and deplorable right shouted you down on media comment sections or on your (my) own social media for using that word (or one was met with deafening silence, with the implication that one was a poor loser).

I want to thank DataLounge and all the well-meaning posters on this thread, and especially the current OP, for keeping hope in our constitution and democracy alive. Unmanipulated discussion is vital in the face of propaganda.

And R307, here’s hoping to a prequel and many follow-ups.

by Anonymousreply 309August 22, 2018 5:20 AM

by Anonymousreply 314August 22, 2018 5:41 AM

So, with Cohen pleading guilty to those charges but not required to cooperate with prosecutors as part of that deal and now his lawyer going on shows and telling everyone he wants to spill everything to get to the truth and wants to talk to Mueller's team, does that mean that this is just a first step in a multi-step plea deal? Cohen will now fully and voluntarily cooperate with Mueller and Mueller will, in turn, vacate the terms of the prior plea deal and require no or very little jail time? Cohen gets to get out of a ton of jail time and gets to look like a savior of the nation as he takes down Trump and we get rid of Trump and the rest of them.

by Anonymousreply 320August 22, 2018 6:36 AM

This is how badass Bob Mueller is. All of this stuff with Cohen isn’t by accident. Mueller knows where’s all the bodies are buried. That’s why it’s going down like this. He already knows what Cohen knows. Some other witness has already told Mueller everything. Mueller just wants Cohen to admit it so he lines up another witness.

by Anonymousreply 321August 22, 2018 6:40 AM

R309 "I felt like I was the only one who could see that the voting totals for Florida and several other states had been literally changed. "

But you weren't! I was thinking the same thing, obsessing over the tallies in each state, especially Florida because they had practically declared Hillary he winner based on absentee ballots alone that came in before election day. It was all too weird. Then I read your post in what might have been the very first Treason thread. I copied/pasted it and emailed to everyone I could think of because you articulated it far better than I did.... I think we even had a bit of conversation, but I'm too tired to bring up the old threads and look thru them.

My point is: what you wrote mattered. If I sent it to a bunch of my friends, I'm sure a lot of other posters did also. You planted a small seed, (sorry, your own tree, this is DL !!), and look how it's grown.

THANK YOU!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 322August 22, 2018 6:41 AM

by Anonymousreply 323August 22, 2018 7:09 AM

Oh, he's still a weasel, r323. This is just his strategy to minimize his exposure, maximize his value to the prosecution and maybe get a little revenge. Never make the mistake that someone like this is a decent person. The moment you turn your back on someone like this is the moment you feel the knife slide in.

by Anonymousreply 324August 22, 2018 7:12 AM

R315, well Cohen is out on bail ($500,000) and isn’t due to serve his sentence at least until mid-December so it would seem he’s got more work to do as a wrecking ball.

by Anonymousreply 325August 22, 2018 7:14 AM

I mentioned this up thread, I'll mention it again. I think Lanny Davis convinced Cohen that if he steps forward and tells all he knows, (which might be more than anyone else involved with Trump knows), there'll be a pardon for him. By the next elected Democratic President. He'll serve a few years in prison, far less than anyone else who had committed the same crimes, and be forgiven once released. Not having to go down in history as a treasonous traitor.

In which case, he really would become the John Dean of Russiagate.

by Anonymousreply 326August 22, 2018 7:16 AM

The Democrats need to speak to this criminal behaviour directly and stop avoiding talk of impeachment. It’s not the only campaign issue - and they shouldn’t campaign on it - but they need to speak to it and promote the start of investigations in Congress.

I agree with the posters who have said Michael Cohen probably hopes for a pardon from the next Dem president. And I imagine he is hoping to avoid State charges. Not to mention a staged suicide by the Russian mob.

That said the fact that he implicated 45 in court while pleading guilty without a cooperation agreement in place and also his lawyer went on TV and said Cohen wants to tell Mueller about the conspiracy to commit treason and all sorts of other things because it’s the right thing to do sends a clear message to 45 that his pardon is useless.

by Anonymousreply 337August 22, 2018 11:07 AM

There is something so sweet about it being Lanny Davis who is representing Michael Cohen and getting him to turn on Trump, and not the direct accusation in open court "I did it at the direction of the candidate..." Lanny was/is a part of the Clinton inner circle, has been for years, and he was/is very close to Hillary. if has always been a cut throat, take-no-prisoners kind of guy. Sitting on the opposite side of the table from Lanny can be a terrifying experience. L.O.L.

R371 When Cohen surrendered yesterday to the FBI my thought was that he wanted protection. Now he's out on his own. There is no direction that fucker can look without his murderer creeping up. He's fucked the mob, including Trump and Pootie. I think he's a dead man.

by Anonymousreply 374August 22, 2018 2:43 PM

Absolutely R370. And I must give Michael Avenatti all the credit here for getting the ball rolling. I don't know how he became Stormy's lawyer, but it was the beginning of Trump's worst nightmare. I think Michael Avenatti is an American hero. Without him, none of this would have been possible.

by Anonymousreply 375August 22, 2018 2:44 PM

David Pecker - National Enquirer

This name is coming up a lot with the payoffs to Stormy, Karen, and buying story rights, then suppressing.

Cohen knows all the details between Trump and Pecker.

Now, Miz Lindz does adore the name Pecker.

by Anonymousreply 376August 22, 2018 2:47 PM

R371, I'm sure that's a concern. Maybe he has protection and they don't want that info to go public.

Not me. I think he will burn it all down, rather than resign. He’s a vindictive SOB, and he will have his pound of flesh! Expect him to incite civil violence and/or bully some country in a brief war. Maybe he’ll attack North Korea. It’s not like he cares about South Koreans or the Japanese. Or Americans, frankly, maybe it’ll be Iran. We’ll see.

by Anonymousreply 393August 22, 2018 3:48 PM

R381 I agree. In fact, I believe he had a plan to incite violence before the election results, when everyone including him thought he'd lose. Now he can just incite greater violence. It's why I say it might have been of a blessing that Hillary didn't become President. With the House and Senate all Republican, she really might have been impeached because of her emails and Benghazi - and not be allowed to govern! The difference being, Hillary wasn't guilty. Trump is! And all the cancer that we now know exists would have been swept back under the rug, to fester, grow, and become more insidious. Trump, Manafort, Mike Flynn, and so many others would be getting away scot-free with their multiple crimes. At least now we know we can work to eradicate it.

by Anonymousreply 394August 22, 2018 3:52 PM

I agree to an extent R394 but I also strongly believe that if Hillary had been sworn in (we all know she won) it would have also been a Dem House and Senate. There's no way they didn't fuck with those votes as well.

by Anonymousreply 395August 22, 2018 3:55 PM

R395 I suspect so too.

by Anonymousreply 396August 22, 2018 4:06 PM

"He's gonna be impeached for sure. After the midterms after Dems win the house."

And what if the Dems don't win? Nothing has been done to fix our hacked and rigged voting system! The Russians will just help the Repugs cheat and they could win again. This issue has not been addressed nearly as strongly as it should be!!

by Anonymousreply 397August 22, 2018 4:18 PM

I know I’m gonna get it but I am not so sure the votes were hacked. I’ve noticed that our eastern pests seem to keep pushing that the votes WERE hacked. Why do they say that? Maybe they don’t want us to trust our voting systems and want us to question democracy.

R399 I used up my WAPO articles for the month. 2-sentence summary please, if you don't mind? Thanks

"I am not so sure..."

But even having not read the article, that's kind of my point. If they were smart enough to hack the tallies, they could have been smart enough to cover their tracks so it goes undetected. I personally believe they did, but it might be many years before we find out for sure and how they got away with it.

by Anonymousreply 400August 22, 2018 4:28 PM

They should have stuck with paper ballots, more hack proof than those electronic machines!

by Anonymousreply 401August 22, 2018 4:29 PM

R400 weeks ago it was demonstrated how they did it. It was kind of an OJ: "If I did It" type article. If they hacked the votes and altered them here's how they could have done it. Point being, they did hack the votes and alter the outcomes.

by Anonymousreply 402August 22, 2018 4:31 PM

[quote]He will chant lock HER up on his death bed.

Can I watch?

by Anonymousreply 404August 22, 2018 4:32 PM

WAPO: Here’s what we found

In brief, we find no evidence that the voting technology favored one candidate more than the other.

Nor could we find any statistical differences correlated with accessibility technologies or with different voting technology vendors.

The tests uncovered nothing suspicious. That supports a conclusion that voting machines themselves were not hacked.

We did run into a problem with the Wisconsin votes: We cannot be sure which technology was used to produce the record of each vote. We often do not know which votes are cast by hand on paper and which votes are cast using Direct Recording Electronic (DRE) technology. That makes it impossible to trace each vote from when and how it was cast to how it was counted — and therefore those votes are impossible to analyze precisely.

We ran into a different problem in Michigan: only a subset of precincts were recounted. Serious problems have been documented in Detroit that potentially could have changed the outcome in the state. Votes in Detroit were not recounted and are not part of our data.

For reasons we detail in the working paper, it’s not feasible to say anything reliable about the associations between voting technologies and the exact numbers of votes the candidates received.

Nonetheless, our analysis offers evidence that voting technology did not distort the votes in Wisconsin or Michigan. How a vote was treated appears not to have depended on which candidate the vote was for. If there was a hack, it appears not to have changed the results.

Way back when Cohen was first under intense scrutiny and had scads of documents seized Trump did his distancing praise thing - and also found room to mention Cohen's lovely family. In other words, 'Do the right thing, Michael.' And now he hasn't.

Given that Trump's deep corruption is not only widely documented but also clear from everything he says and does, the 'too obvious' doubt seems unpersuasive.

Everything about Trump is crude stupid and venal, which he's convinced are merits. It's too late now for him not to think he's untouchable. This saga has been extraordinary, so the endgame could be ugly indeed. Putin will be viewing events with interest.

I think the biggest mistake Trump made, considering how filthy dirty he is, I was the decisionfor his staff to “cooperate with the Meuller Investigation” (despite him complaining about it the whole time). It was good for America, but not good for a criminal like Trump and his enterprise. Perhaps his advisors were afraid that his staff would balk at a directive to stonewall and misdirect, afraid of obstruction charges? Maybe they were afraid that such a directive would send people fleeing to Meuller to rat on Trump , for fear of criminal obstruction charges themselves?

Nixon actually had true believers working for him at all levels. I think that Trump’s top associates are mostly opportunists and criminals. He has lower-level followers, true believers, but those are just pasties, not top lieutenants. I’m sure Trump has no respect for them. Aside from a Steve Bannon and the White Power-Racist contingent, I don’t think Trump has top advisors that really believe in him as a leader.

With regard to the discussion about votes actually being changed. Always good to bring this back up as a reminder:

[quote]Yes. There's already proof. I work in the industry. I sat in a meeting with the head of cyber security investigations for the FBI in Florida. Their systems were hacked in 2016. What's difficult is proving that (or more accurately stated "how") the votes were manipulated. But go back to election night and remember how Trump pulled ahead in Florida, NC, MI, PA and WI. It happened almost like clock work once the precincts reporting crossed the 50% threshold. This shit is deep. Putin had already done this in his own election and also in Ukraine. We should be very worried about the EU elections coming up.

by Anonymousreply 469August 22, 2018 9:20 PM

The White House says that the constitution precludes the indictment of a sitting president. But it also claims that the absence of an indictment is proof that Trump is innocent.

Funny, that.

by Anonymousreply 470August 22, 2018 9:21 PM

I know, R470. It's utterly nonsensical.

Like Ghouliani's statement that the charges against Cohen did not mention anything about the president, ergo he is innocent. But if as the Trump camp insists, a president simply cannot be indicted, the charges against Cohen can't ever include charges against the president. Under the logic of "a sitting potus cannot be indicted", the absence of indictment doesn't mean anything more than following that technical rule.

But deplorables can't grapple with a two-step logical sequence. They know only "no collusion" and "lock her up".

by Anonymousreply 486August 22, 2018 11:17 PM

So I don't support impeachment in the short term, and here's why.

I think (assuming Dems get control of House and maybe Senate) that the balance of power shifts. I'd want lots and lots and lots of public hearings... exposing Trump AND the Republicans. Let them suffer their rewards. It's only two years until the election... it keeps it alive and at the forefront and I think it will mean bigger gains for the Democrats. And that doesn't even factor what Mueller finally reveals.

Crazy? (I know quick impeachment would feel good, but...)

by Anonymousreply 487August 22, 2018 11:17 PM

I agree, r487, I want people to hear about this and get pissed off. We need to fund elections with taxpayer money to politicians will answer to us as the "donors".

Interesting on MSNBC. The Senator said Mueller has spread his investigation into 5 different area’s of the government. To end the investigation Trump would have to go to 5 different area’s and fire each office of government.

Here is some info regarding the jurors and the trial, apparently the defense repeatedly asked for a mistrial, one juror wanted off due to a medical issue but was denied, and one juror claimed the others were discussing the case outside of the trial though the others said this did not happen, and this juror also complained the others were saying the "defense was weak".

Also, Judge Ellis commented that the jurors were intimidated and American history had never seen such a trial, then said "“that’s kind of a ridiculous thing for me to say.”

“WASHINGTON — Senior Republican Party leaders began urging their most imperiled incumbents on Wednesday to speak out about the wrongdoing surrounding President Trump, with Representative Tom Cole, a former House Republican campaign chairman, warning, “Where there’s smoke, and there’s a lot of smoke, there may well be fire.”

by Anonymousreply 542August 23, 2018 2:40 AM

Only hours after the convictions of Mr. Cohen and Mr. Manafort, Representative Duncan D. Hunter of California was indicted on a charge of using campaign money to fund a lavish lifestyle, including the alleged purchase of golf shorts masked as a charitable veterans contribution. Those charges came only weeks after Representative Chris Collins of New York was arrested on charges of insider trading, something that has also tarnished a handful of his colleagues, including Representative John Culberson, an endangered Texas Republican. Mr. Collins and Mr. Hunter were Mr. Trump’s two earliest congressional supporters.

In Virginia, Representative Scott Taylor is accused of forging signatures to get an independent on the ballot this fall to help save his seat. And in Florida, Representative Vern Buchanan is accused of accepting a seven-figure yacht loan from a bank lobbying for last year’s tax cut, then purchasing the 73-foot vessel on the same day he voted for the measure he helped write.

The WaPo story:

A conservative commentator who was lauded by President Trump this week as “wonderful” and who has argued that past sexual indiscretions should have no bearing on Trump’s presidency was fired from Arizona State University four years ago for making sexually explicit comments and gestures toward women, according to documents and a university official.

An internal investigation by the university concluded that Paris Dennard, a surrogate during the campaign and now a member of the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships, told a recent college graduate who worked for him that he wanted to have sex with her. He “pretended to unzip his pants in her presence, tried to get her to sit on his lap, and made masturbatory gestures,” according to a university report obtained by The Washington Post.

According to the 2014 report, Dennard did not dispute those claims but said he committed the acts jokingly. The investigation began after the woman and a second female employee told superiors Dennard’s actions went too far and had made them uncomfortable.

by Anonymousreply 567August 23, 2018 3:33 AM

I'm not entirely surprised that there was one fucking Trumptard who slipped onto the jury. The jury pool for the Eastern District of Virginia covers the whole eastern part of the state, and outside of the DC suburbs there are some fairly conservative areas included in that mix. I'd say that whoever the juror was made a calculated judgment to convict on 8 and hold out on the other 10. He had to have figured that if it was a hung jury on all 18 counts and the split was 11-1, then Mueller would definitely retry the entire case. And, Manafort might not get so lucky the second time around and have another reich-winger on the jury.

But, as it now stands, a retrial on the remaining 10 is unlikely. It won't materially change the sentencing calculation. AND, there is a second trial in DC. Manafort will not be so lucky as to get a ringer from the DC federal jury pool. I'd hazard a guess that the demographics will be more heavily weighted towards potential jurors who are younger, Democratic, and gay. Good luck skating next time out, Pauly.
