Victoria is a horrible character whose domestic violence story was pointless. Vapid Abby, sudden arrogant Nick make me want to retch. Aunt Jack is a joke - what happened to his wish to find his birth father? Oh, another stupid story. Cancel this show.

I think Mealor is doing really well as Kyle. I wasn't sold in the beginning but he's settled in now.

He also has chemistry with everyone.

I handle budgets, contracts, schedules -- the nuts and bolts of daily production. I work very closely with Mail Young our executive producer and head writer to make sure we have the resources for his creative vision."

He said part of the job involves desk work, right down to doing mundane things like signing checks and paying bills. He emphasized that his biggest challenge is to make sure the creative vision he's chartered to bring to the screen comes in on budget and on schedule. He talked about how the concentrated work schedule (where they now shoot more shows per week) means that there's less room for dealing with the inevitable problems that crop up during the day. He made it sound like it usually falls to the supervising producer for that episode to figure out what they're going to do or what resources they'll use to solve those.

To B&B watchers, in the last two questions on the first page of that interview -- What storyline is Jacob Young referring to where he says he wrote a breakdown for (for Rick and Maya) where Brad liked it, but said, "CBS was going to give us hell if we tell this story"? .. Perhaps I'm misreading things, but the way Young describes how things went down, it sounded like Bell went ahead and used the story for other characters??

r385 He did. B&B started a story involving interns at Forrester Creations, involving newbie characters. The actors involved may be young, but they are quite competent in the parts. Problem is the main characters in the storyline are all brand new; the established characters are only peripheral to the story.

So, if you haven't seen the show in three months and tuned in one day when the newbies are on, you'd be scratching your head wondering if this was B&B or some other show since you don't recognize anyone.

Jacob says he initially pitched the story to Brad Bell, In that pitch, Ric Forrester was heavily involved in the story. Brad rejected it, saying it couldn't work. Then he took the story idea, reworked it slightly, eliminating Ric and Maya, and that's what we're seeing on screen.

It’s just a matter of time before the remaining soaps die. The 18-49 demos are atrocious. The 18-34 are pathetic. Soaps are not cultivating the advertisers desired demo, which will eventually kill the shows. GH was number 1 in the women 18-49 demo with 380,000 viewers. The soaps can’t be profitable anymore with those paltry numbers. But reading Mal’s latest interview, I see that he is clueless. Trying to ‘fix’ something that wasn’t broken. Soaps continually shoot themselves in the foot for no good reason. It’s time to pull the plug.

Y&R always had a style and a rhythm. I was never a big fan (I watched OLTL), but I appreciated how Y&R presented itself as the classy soap. All that has fallen apart and all I see is a shambles. Plots that don't make sense, the lack of a "plan." It's become a silly show where characters we know are changed overnight, thrown into scenes with a ton of newbies, all for brief dramatic effect. Soap watchers like the slow build up. We like to watch our favorites struggle. These writers act like any character could say any line or behave in any way. I miss the days when the characters had, well, a character...they were consistent, and their particular qualities sometimes got them into trouble. Let's make everyone bad! Let's make everyone have conflict all the time! Let's play out stories in two weeks and then just forget about the story the third week. It's as if, in trying to re-invent the genre, they've simply watered it down to nothing.

I agree R436. Y&R was HEAVILY stylized- There was no show like it-

Lush sets, dark and luxurious lighting, extremely TRITE yet intelligent dialogue (always reminded me of Sirk films from the 50's). The acting was generally sedate vs. over the top.

This shit could be ANY SHOW. They even fucked with the lighting when JFP took over.

Good lighting can make any show look better. OLTL was a great example. Valentini at least had the show lit well to hide the OLD sets as there were no budgets anymore.

All that Mal can brag about is how he changed the lighting and camera work to make the show more cinematic and like primetime. He can’t brag about the ratings sonce he took over because they suck. I've read many times that several regimes felt locked in by the Lane fanbase.

Every time the writers thru obstacles at them ( to give them some sort of drama) that fanbase would go stark raving mad. They are very organized & not afraid to spend their coins (they hired planes more than once to fly over with signs). They will rage if Lane don't have a story but rage if the characters do anything that's not seen in a good light.

For myself I have no problem bring on the Latin family.I say bring it! The show is not writing out Devon or Neil. They've hired 2 new AA actresses who I'm sure will mix it up with them. They've brought on Nate who it looks like will be paired with Victoria.

IMO sending Lily to jail is great. Soaps need to show more of actions having consequences ex= Victor Newman We'll see Lily sporadically when she gets prison visits. And R438 has just explained why soap are dying. You can watch primetime in primetime. Daytime was always meant to be affordable programing to stuff with ads to pay for primtetime programming. There was nothing wrong with beefing up the sets and the wardrobe in the 80s, but a nice wardrobe and sets doesn't mask bad storytelling. Daytime doesn't have time or money to mimic primetime and the effort to mimic primetime is what killed most of these shows.

If you look at the they heyday of soaps. They had 7 or 8 main sets that were simple and the wardrobe from Ohrbach's. And stories took years to unfold.

Bringing in a new Latino family isn't going to solve what's wrong with Y&R. It needs a writer with 2 or 3 years worth of long story and a step by step plan on how they are going to tell the story.

And a lot of scenes with Jordi Vilasuso and Josh Morrow without shirts.

I don't know how to fix Y&R but I'd start with:

1. a young set; with a heroine, a bitch, the guy they both pine after and his best friend. The Gold standard on this is, for me and for many, the four muskateers; they can always put a twist on it e.g. the bitch being loveable as Mindy was.

2. don't give Nick Newman stories where he becomes dark; he can't swing it.

3. don't tell stories people don't want to see; Victor and Nikki's open marriage was done so badly. and wrapped up like wha? stop introducing new characters you're not going to invest in;

4. stop starting stories that go nowhere; Ashley was accused of killing Graham or suspected of it and the next day it's all over.

5. Speaking of Graham, stop telling stories that don't make sense; Graham wanted revenge on the Abbott kids because Dina left John? Makes no sense.

6. I could go on, but I have to get to work.

The way to fix THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS is in the title. End of story.

Or take the first five years of scripts, modernize them, and just retell those stories. The problems of young people, regardless of generation, are essentially the same. The gadgets and clothes and hairstyles may be different, but young people still deal with the same core problems.

And stop retelling the tired Jack and Victor story. Move on. It's really not that hard. Back then the oldest characters in town were Katherine, Liz, and Stewart and they were in their early 50s. Phillip Chancellor was in his 40s when he got with Jill. There was no 80 year old character fighting with a 70 year old character about dumb shit.
