The executive producer balked and recast her role.

I think they want most of the older contract people to go to free up money. And the biggest money guzzlers, of course, are Eric Braeden, MTS and Bergman. All of who have outlived their usefulness, if you ask me.

Contract on Y&R means you still get to do your little turn in the opening credits at least once a week.

Y&R doesn’t tape on Mondays and they take several weeks off a year. They have many dark weeks.

Yes, they save on crew. Most behind the scenes workers are only paid for the days they work. They also save on utilities by being dark.

Soaps also have to pay for studio space. Sony has to pay CBS for the use of that studio and the office space and utilities. I just read that the reason why sets are a problem is because of the labor it costs to build and then strike the sets. That's why you see more generic sets and sets that can be re-dressed as something else.

A few years ago, B&B did a complete tear down and build up of Studio 31 at CBS Television City - captured on time-lapse video. Interesting. .. I'm not sure why - maybe renovation or refurbishment or moving things around or something technical? .. Y&R occupies two Studios 41 and 43.

Frank tapes by set, which is the method he implemented at OLTL - that's why a lot of the actors at OLTL found it difficult at first because they weren't taping in sequence. But it helped not having to put up new sets each day, plus OLTL's UWS/Columbus studio had a every small soundstage compared to other studios.

The whole set issue was a large part of why the NYC soaps closed down operations. It was the reason Guiding Light tried the whole Peapack thing.

NYC is the most expensive real estate in the country, and it wasn't the studio space per se, but the rental costs for sets, and the transportation costs of taking sets down, moving them back and forth, etc.

GH only has 1 set that stays up continuously & that the nursing station.

That is why Days created that Horton Town Square set and adjacent park set . It stays up all the time and they can use it to shoot just about everything except bedroom scenes. They even put it in dialogue that it had an enclosed roof and is climate controlled so they can use it year round.

I'm not sure if that was what Y&R was going for with the Chancellor Park thing or not. All these shows had great sets, especially Y&R. It's a shame that we'll never see a lot of them again.

I don't think it's fair to blame the new characters for anything. Y&R has budget issues, they cannot pay actors what they were once being paid. The vets are older and don't come cheap. So why not bring in a new family that is younger, played by cheaper actors, and who can breathe some new life into the show.

But ultimately, the mess that is Y&R is Mal's fault. This is what happens every time they bring in someone from the outside who wants to transform American daytime into something it's not supposed to be. The key to fixing Y&R is in it's title and it's history.

The Rosales family could have been the Foster family or the Brooks family. Greg Foster could have married and had kids with a Latina at some point off camera. Peggy Brooks could have married Mr. Rosales and she is their mother.

I think it's just so long since they tried to introduce a new family that nobody knows what to do about it. Plus, the new family doesn't have an anchor or link, as noted above. And the tie between the sister and Kyle is a new actress with a new actor. I think the last successful introduction was the Baldwin/Fisher clan (which got a lot of backlash while it ate the show... another classic and inevitable mistake.). So it seems lie the Young and the Rosales, because it's essentially the old show and the new show in the same show. One thing Bell did well was things went on for a year, it seemed, minimum. People did some extraordinary things vs. real life but the reactions seemed real. If your brother fucked your wife and took her away from you, would you be over by now? It should have caused a schism that lasted for years.

R572 Part of it was that CBS pushed Maura on Y&R. ATWT had ended and CBS Daytime really wanted to capitalize on her following. She was originally slated to be introduced as a new character, if I remember correctly, but somehow that changed a month or so before she came to Y&R, and they used her as a Diane recast.

Maura wouldn't be the first person to not make such a transition work - she even said in interviews that maybe Diane wasn't a great match - but in most cases, a recast gets at least some level of support from co-stars. But Maura was frozen out. Y&R has never been a homey set, but apparently several actors went out of their way to be terrible to her. (The usual suspects.) And as usual, instead of calling the old guard at Y&R out on their bad behavior, West got the ax instead.

Maura West at least has had some meaty scenes on GH. Seems like they could utilize her better there, though.

Even though Maura was a good 15+ years younger than what Dianejenkins was supposed to be, she probably could have sold the character, if she'd at least dyed her hair chestnut brown, then slowly went lighter over time. Most viewers just couldn't buy NuNuDiane as a diamond blonde.

I worked there for about 2 years. It is one of the worst experiences I've ever had. I don't think I've ever been surrounded by so many dysfunctional people. Not helpful and very fake. The producers never gave me any notes, which should have clued me in it wasn't working. After that experience was over I heard from some other soap people about that set being toxic.

I remember one scene with the self appointed grand dame of the show. It was like she was working in a fog. It was supposed to be this intense scene, but she just wasn't there for it. She was changing lines, which was changing what the writers were trying to get across in the scene. I couldn't say anything and I ended up looking like a complete fool in that scene. And they kissed her ass like she was the greatest thing ever.
