Chris Watts asks judge to compel coroner to look for DNA on children's necks - CNN

His attorneys asked a court Friday to require pathologists doing autopsies on the bodies of his family to swab the little girls' necks and hands for DNA, court filings show.

In a second motion, obtained by CNN affiliate KDVR, defense attorneys asked the court to compel the coroner's office to look for DNA under the mother's fingernails and on her hands.

They also asked the court to allow defense expert Richard Eikelenboom to take swabs from the bodies.

It is unclear whether a judge ordered the coroner's officer to swab for DNA.

The first motion, according to documents, was filed 20 minutes before the autopsies were scheduled to begin.

Defense attorneys did not indicate in the court filings what motivated them to make those requests.

Doing autopsies on strangled children stored in crude oil would be icky.

Chris Watts, 33, allegedly admitted Wednesday to killing his wife, 34-year-old Shanann, and daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3. Watts’ wife was 15 weeks pregnant at the time.

Friends of Shanann said she had feared her husband was being unfaithful.

"It came to her mind that possibly he could be cheating," Amanda Thayer told CBS News.

Ashley Bell said she couldn't believe it when Watts was arrested for the family's murders.

"I kept telling myself, 'No, no, no. He wouldn't do anything to her,'" she said.

Online, Shanann gushed about her relationship with Watts, calling him "the best dad" she could ask for.

But privately, she was worried, her friends said. The couple also faced financial struggles — public records show they had filed for bankruptcy in 2015.

Shanann and her daughters had been missing since Monday from their Frederick home. On Tuesday, Watts gave an emotional interview, pleading for his family's safe return.

“I hope she is somewhere safe right now with the kids,” Watts told KMGH-TV. “If someone has them and they are not safe, I want them back right now….”

Asked if he had argued with his wife before her disappearance, he cryptically replied, "We had an emotional conversation," and declined to elaborate further.

Now, Watts is being held in Weld County Jail, where he was booked on three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of tampering with physical evidence.

When he appeared in court on Thursday, he showed no emotion. He has not yet entered a plea.

From the moment I heard about this in passing, when they were still looking for the wife and kids, I said that he killed them. It's always the husband or boyfriend. I just read an article that says they were in a tank containing crude. I used to quote cleaning services for tanks like this.

When the crude is fresh, it is very thick like asphalt. Over time, it solidifies and actually has to be chiseled out of the tank. If someone looked in the tank, they would not see the girls because they would be covered with asphalt. They would not smell them either. The crude has a very strong, aromatic smell on its own.

Don't know if the bodies would have disintegrated because there would not be very much oxygen, and they would be encapsulated in very thick to hardened crude. Companies go many years before cleaning these tanks because it is incredibly expensive to do so.

When I lived in the South Bay (SF), Santa Clara had three family annihilations in a year. One was the mother killing the husband and the kid before killing herself.

Someone earlier asked why there would be a trial if he confessed. I’m not a lawyer, so defer to anyone here who is, but:

1. We don’t know who he confessed to. LE and her family are stated in news sources saying he confessed, but there’s a rumor on WS that he confessed to a neighbor after police left on Tuesday and they called it in and LE were back on Wednesday. Then supposedly his family got him to confess. We’ll know more when the arrest affidavit is unsealed tomorrow.

2. He may have confessed to LE directly, but then plead not guilty depending on charges and penalty DA pursues, and we don’t know that yet either. For example, if they want first degree murder and death penalty, he will most likely be advised by his defense to plead not guilty so they have time to review evidence and build their own case for lesser charges/ penalty (2nd degree, insanity, life, etc)....

R393 I'm no specialist, but my close friend is a psychologist and he called me a couple of years ago because of my obsession with serial killers and true crime to tell me about a patient of his. Basically he had began seeing a 13 year old boy who was diagnosed with sociopathy and he was treating the kid and the parents who were both in shock of the whole situation.

It was very interesting to see that. The kid would pit the parents and the two siblings against one another for fun all the time. He'd manipulate everyone during a birthday party to get out of there instead of just walking away. I felt really bad for the parents it can't be easy to learn that from your child from an early age.
