Yuzuru Hanyu and other figure skating talk part 4

We can continue discussions on this thread. Looking forward to this coming season. Almost here!

Akiko Suzuki sure is ugly.

How will she ever find a husband?

by Anonymousreply 1August 14, 2018 4:55 PM

R1. We are on this thread still if you want to join us. I just made the thread in advance since wecare already over 500 posts. Posting link as well.

by Anonymousreply 3August 15, 2018 3:27 AM

Oh crap - I just posted at number 601, so I'm bringing it forward but mainly to bump this thread - we were talking about one of Yuzuru's biggest ass-ets.

Is it that Yuzuru is the only one who wears pants that tight - or is it something about his extra-curvy shape - that makes him, uh, stick out like that? I swear I don't notice it with the other top guys - Nathan, Shoma, Boyang, even Javi. I mean, even Weir, even Adam Rippon - I don't ever remember being so distracted.

Yuzuru could wear looser bottoms, so to speak, without messing up his practice, surely. So he's doing it on purpose? Or maybe he has gotten used to the skin tight pants. I remember somewhere he said he didn't like traveling in tight pants (on airplanes?) so he chooses wisely... Oh I can't remember. I guess if you've got it, flaunt it, what the hell. Maybe it's bought him a few points along the way.

by Anonymousreply 4August 16, 2018 12:54 AM

R4. I hope everyone got this link. I posted it yesterday I think? I didn't know the thread would be done so fast

I think Hanyu knows what he's doing. I know when I watch the practice video I can't help but stare at his ass. I think someone on the other thread mentioned javi. I am sure javi looked at Hanyu's ass many times. We know Lambiel looked LOL!

by Anonymousreply 5August 16, 2018 1:06 AM

r4 I think in Boyang's case, all his bubbliness went to his personality.

Nathan, Shoma, and Javi always seem to wear black pants that I think are a thicker material and looser than Hanyu's.

In his costumes, Hanyu's ass is only extremely noticeable in the LGC outfit, which I think is the shiny material.

In practice, my guess is that it's because Under Armour is mass produced and Hanyu has such an unusual shape for men. His pants seem loose at the shins and ankles and tight at the hips and thighs. I imagine that if he wore a bigger size it would be too loose at the waist and shins. His spin positions also require more stretching than the other men so he needs a material that will stretch without riding up.

purely for research purposes, here's a picture focusing on Hanyu's pants. If you look at the bottom of the picture, you can see the pants getting looser at the knees.. ...everyone's looking closely at the knees right?

by Anonymousreply 11August 16, 2018 1:35 AM

I think he wears women's training pants. His tops are always Under Armour but his bottoms aren't usually. He sent a thank-you gift to a Japanese sportswear company after Pyeongchang, whose pants he apparently favors. From poking around their site it seemed to mostly be targeted to female skaters and the women's pants looked like his style.

by Anonymousreply 12August 16, 2018 1:46 AM

R11. Poor Johnny went through so much when he competed. Look where he is now. I think even Nancy Kerrigan said something something if I am not mistaken.

That costume in the photo of Johnny looks like something siimilar to Hanyu?

by Anonymousreply 13August 16, 2018 1:50 AM

I saw Johnny's costume in a lineup next to Yuzu in R8 but now that I look closer, there not as alike as I thought - but the body shapes are different. No other man looks like Yuzuru - at least not that I can think of.

I just watched the linked youtube of the top ten award winning men under ISU points-rules, and I swear, Evan Lysacek looks like a mincing giraffe. However did he win? And over that adorable Johnny!! (who hasn't aged as well as I'd hoped - but Stephane Lambiel looks a LOT better now that he did when he was competing imo).

But anyway, all the men have straighter bodies than Yuzuru. He could get on the catwalk with the best female supermodels!

R9 Yes, yes I see. The knees are muscular yet soft and deliciously ripe. And not to be off topic here or anything, but is he wearing boxer briefs in that picture?

by Anonymousreply 15August 16, 2018 2:32 AM

Hanyu's been wearing UA practice clothes since he was pretty young though, so unless he's been working it since his teens, I think he's just going with what's most comfortable for him.

by Anonymousreply 16August 16, 2018 2:38 AM

But R12 says he gets his pants from someone other than UA - possibly women's bottoms?

by Anonymousreply 17August 16, 2018 2:41 AM

R14. I always thought his body was pretty similar to a lady's. And I bet if he did do the catwalk he would blow those models away!

R15. I can't tell if he has boxers. Hopefully R9 can tell us. : )

by Anonymousreply 18August 16, 2018 3:13 AM

R12 Are you thinking of Marina Ice? Supposedly he likes their flare pants, which are made for men (the man model/mannequin seems to have a pretty womanly shape though).

Jorik Hendrickx withdraws from GP. One of his 2 spots (USA and Finland) will likely go to Cha given he's top of the alternate list. Skate America has the advantage being in North America but since Orser will go to Finland for Hanyu, they may prefer to have Cha there

by Anonymousreply 25August 16, 2018 8:37 AM

I think Rostelecom skipped over Cha to offer a place to Australia's Kerry (who trains in Moscow I think) - so I sure Hope Cha gets one of those. Do you know why Jorik is withdrawing?

by Anonymousreply 26August 16, 2018 10:53 AM

Now that ISU is starting over with scores does anyone think Hanyu will set some new records? It's said that Hanyu needs a challenge to keep him motivated. This starting over could be a challenge along with the 4A

by Anonymousreply 27August 16, 2018 2:04 PM

Of Cha does not get the spot then I'm not going to be happy. I'll be asking why? This kid deserves it imo.

by Anonymousreply 28August 16, 2018 2:06 PM

He does deserve it! He'll have two in a row, no matter which of Jorik's two open spots they give him, but he's young and, if healthy, it shouldn't be a problem, should it? I'm mad he's not going to Moscow with Yuzuru ;( Nobody else from TCC is either but Jason and Evgenia are going to France the week after.

Gabby's at NHK the week before but that other guy was sitting with her in the K&C at the ladies singles event at the Olys (though I'm pretty sure Brian sat with her during the team event at Pyeogchang - I really can't figure her situation out - Brian talks about her like she's his student - wonder if they had some friction or something.

I hope Yuzuru has either Brian, Tracy or Ghislain (is he still at TCC?) with him at each comp but I'm concerned with all these newbies. Though Boyang is staying with his Chinese coaches - I hope - that would be one more to fit in. That awful ankle injury happened while Orser was in the hospital last November - and Yuzu's so superstitious... Oh well, everything should really be icing on the cake now for him. I'm more worried about Jason, Cha, and Evgenia, but still don't want Yuzu on his own.

Poor little Shingo is injured and will miss at least one comp. I'm not sure Yuzuru has taken him under his wing which I was kinda hoping for, but I know after Pyeongchang, Yuzuru's been overwhelmed with stuff to do (and last year was worse.)

by Anonymousreply 29August 16, 2018 2:17 PM

Kevin Reynolds get Jorik's Skate America spot

by Anonymousreply 30August 16, 2018 3:13 PM

R29 Daleman's primary coach is Lee Barkell

by Anonymousreply 31August 16, 2018 3:23 PM

There's still one spot in Helsinki and one at Rostelecom, right? Cha still has a chance but looking how they issue invitations... Nam Nguyen, for example, a.so has only one spot, and is less of a threat, I think, than Cha. The Fed might want to protect their own, Dmitriev and Erokhov, but Finland has no horse in this race so they might take him on if they want a strong set. But if they do take him on Helsinki will probably be the most stacked men's event.

by Anonymousreply 32August 16, 2018 6:16 PM

The column for Rostelecom cup has now only 11 entries as the total in the bottom with the 12th file just as a blank space, as if it's already a done deal there will be no replacement.

Apparently they are keeping Denis Ten's spot untouched.

Is Shingo Nishiyama another Japanese skater at TCC ? He must be 16 ~17 years old now and he has trained there for quite a while ( 2 years??? ) but it seems his training came to nothing. I wonder who paid his training cost. I heard he worked with B.Orser, Tracy, Briand and had D.Wilson do choreography for some of his programs.

by Anonymousreply 34August 16, 2018 7:09 PM

Jason's new hairdo is appalling. It looks like he has a bird's nest on top of his head and it's not a nice looking nest either. How is that an improvement over his trademark pony tail?

As for Orser showing up for Hanyu's comps, he damn well better. None of those other skaters he currently coaches won him any OGMs.

by Anonymousreply 35August 16, 2018 7:29 PM

Oh mercy - I just watched Shingo at the same competition Gogolev did this summer. Linked is an interview with him from this past April, and both it and the comp skates make me feel sad. He's in Canada with no family - they had to move him to a Japanese-speaking host family after an initial one not working out. He says "It is not easy to make friends [at TCC]" Apparently his coach in Japan is a friend of Brian's, but I think this kid should have stayed at home with his coach there. He looked like he was about to cry after his skates:

Shingo NISHIYAMA SP Skate Ontario 2018 Minto Summer Competition: A step out, a popped axel and another popped jump, he fell after standing up after a sit spin – afterwards, a Ghislain spotting!! (he was explaining something to Shingo after his skate, and Brian was there with him too). Score 44.17

Shingo NISHIYAMA FS Skate Ontario 2018 Minto Summer Competition FS: Two iffy landings and two falls and a pop – though a couple jumps were good. (After: Brian was demonstrating bending his knees to Shingo). Score 98.34.

According to this article from April ‘18, he should be about 15 now. I'm not so sure Brian has Eteri's talent for taking a youngster and molding him -- he may need them to get there already "broken in" - though maybe Gogolev will prove that theory wrong. I would have figured Yuzuru would reach out but I'm not so sure he has -- when asked who's impressed him lately, Shingo said Jason Brown and Misha Ge (though he does agree when asked if he looks up to Yuzu).

But I can't know enough about the exact circumstances to blame Yuzuru or his mother for not doing more for Shingo - maybe they've tried. Nobody would expect them to have him move in with them.

R29. I would prefer Ghislain to be with Hanyu. Do I think Brian should be there? Absolutely because this is his two time gold medalist. I don't know what Brian is thinking at this moment. I know I said in the other thread something to the effect of I didn't think he should be going to China back and forth. I believe it's for money but he has a team in Canada. Skaters that do need him. I hate that Hanyu is superstitious and hopefully he stays healthy this season.

by Anonymousreply 38August 16, 2018 7:50 PM

R36. Omg that is heartbreaking. Maybe he needs to think about if this us the right environment for him. I would say going back home might be best in his situation.

by Anonymousreply 39August 16, 2018 7:55 PM

r33 I thought that the 12th spot at Rostelecom was left blank because they haven't determined the substitute yet but you're right, maybe it's tribute to Denis Ten.

by Anonymousreply 40August 16, 2018 8:06 PM

Brian didn't look very pleased with Shingo's performance at Minto.

by Anonymousreply 41August 16, 2018 9:08 PM

I'm annoyed Cha was skipped over. Is he just going to be screwed on assignments and PCS until the Korean fed gets its shit together? When are we going to see the supposed Orser boost for this kid?

r35 Not sure about Jason's hair, but I think his face looks cuter with the shorter do.

by Anonymousreply 46August 16, 2018 9:32 PM

Can't believe they keep doing this to Cha. Can't Brian do anything? It's like Cha's great Olympics (and I feel he did fantastic) is not worth anything.

Ok this just popped in my head. Does anyone think he keeps getting passed over because of school? Not sure how he is doing school.

by Anonymousreply 47August 16, 2018 9:33 PM

R43. I think you might be right. I think it's boxer briefs too.

by Anonymousreply 48August 16, 2018 9:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 49August 16, 2018 9:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 50August 16, 2018 9:42 PM

Nishiyama has actually improved since moving to TCC. He was 9th at Junior Nationals last year but 16th the previous year. He's known for being the ultimate Hanyu fan and said he went to TCC because of him. He did say that he closely watches Hanyu's practices in an interview this year, and tries to emulate him and asks for his advice between training sessions, but I think that's the extent of their relationship. Nishiyama's parents are funding him and as you said, his Japanese coach is friends with Orser and was the first Japanese skater to join TCC. I'm really curious about the coaching situation, too. I thought he was ranked higher and wonder if he would've joined TCC without the family money and connections, or if Orser saw something promising. Poor Cha, though. He deserves better.

by Anonymousreply 51August 16, 2018 9:58 PM

r45 Hey, I quite like Reynolds, it's not a beauty contest. Reynolds's skating is fairly empty, but he still can be interesting on ice.

r47 He might keep getting passed over because he's more of a threat to the medium level skaters of host countries (though I don't think he's more of a threat than Reynolds who's got 2 quads). I hope that the fact he didn't get SA means he chose Finland and it hasn't just been announced yet. /optimist

by Anonymousreply 52August 16, 2018 10:08 PM

I either heard or read an interview with Orser right after Pyeongchang and he was angry that the Korea fed didn't think it was worth their while to send Cha to Worlds. I don't know who's more annoying - the Korean or the Chinese fed.

by Anonymousreply 53August 16, 2018 11:12 PM

Shingo is musical and does some lovely moves but he's clearly not another Japanese skating phenom. Did he grow quite a bit recently? If so, that could account for all the jump problems.

As for Hanyu, I doubt he has the time or energy now to mentor anyone.

by Anonymousreply 54August 16, 2018 11:14 PM

R53: how will Korea and Japan react to Orser/Wilson being the China Fed coaches?

by Anonymousreply 55August 16, 2018 11:19 PM

R33. I believe if they wanted to have a tribute to ten they can find another way. I am sure he would want someone to have his spot.

by Anonymousreply 56August 16, 2018 11:39 PM

I can't be the only one thinking this Tracy Brian China situation stinks. I would love to he a fly on the wall at TCC and see how the skaters like cha. Med. Jason, and Hanyu feel about all this.

by Anonymousreply 57August 16, 2018 11:43 PM

R56 I agree, that would be a dumb way to pay tribute to him, denying someone the opportunity to compete.

by Anonymousreply 58August 16, 2018 11:45 PM

R55 Since it's China, everyone will shrug off the Orser deal as a typical nouveau riche cheater play to earn status and PCS the easy way. If it were Japan, it would have been yet another humiliating insult of historic proportions to all other Asian nations (except India, which doesn't count). If it were Korea, it would have been merely a cosmetic manipulation to cover up the innate homeliness of Korean artistry and technique.

by Anonymousreply 59August 17, 2018 12:00 AM

R57 I guess we will have to wait and see how this plays out. Hanyu should be okay because he's such an experienced competitor and because he seems to have developed such a good relationship with Ghislain. Don't know about the others though. When I read through the forums, all I'm seeing are links to SM showing TCC skaters getting haircuts and coloring their hair. Or doing embarrassing "dancing" videos.

by Anonymousreply 60August 17, 2018 12:30 AM

R60: After reading that, the China deal makes sense. The reality is the senior skaters at TCC are more into being entertainers and not being qualified to get actual jobs. These aren’t skaters that contributed anything to the sport or pushed it forward. Hanyu doesn’t light my world on fire, but I will make him the exception to that— but he isn’t getting younger or healthier.

by Anonymousreply 64August 17, 2018 4:56 AM

R64. Exactly! I come back to the figure skating world after a 4 year break and thought wtf happened?

by Anonymousreply 65August 17, 2018 5:03 AM
The reality is the senior skaters at TCC are more into being entertainers and not being qualified to get actual jobs

R61 Can you explain a little what you mean by this? I guess I don't see any skater being qualified for actual jobs, unless you mean as choreographer, coach or commenter. Despite all the back patting and fanfare this summer, the talent isn't exactly deep at TCC is it, once Hanyu and Fernandez retire. Do they have any serious contenders for 2022? Even assuming he survives growing pains and works on his artistry, Gogolev will only be 17 and aside from Hanyu and Button, men's singles champions are usually older. I don't see that being a consultant for all of Team China helps increase Orser's stature in any significant way. He's not going to be involved enough to cultivate raw talent, and if Jin or Sui/Han medal, I don't see him getting credit for it.

by Anonymousreply 66August 17, 2018 5:13 AM

That's interesting. Maybe Orser saw all his eggs in Boyang's basket as the guy who could go head-to-head with Nathan Chen, if they'd just fix his skating skills (which Orser/Tracy pride themselves on and rightly so.) Then poof - in an instant, his unbroken string of Yuna Yuzu/Javi on the Olympic podiums is threatened. No WONDER he's trashing Trusova and her quads (so is Raf, btw). And the other Russian prodigy girls.

And no wonder Orser was livid about Korea not supporting Cha, who he needs more than ever with Boyang saying no thanks. (btw, I hope his entering Finlandia was an effort to get him chosen by GP Finland but... well, I don't think it's been announced - he deserves it dammit, plus Yuzu's there and I want Orser there too, because as of now, there aren't any other TCC's there.)

Both of them, of ALL people, with their little quadster boy prodigies Gogolev and Chen. BUT, when you look at their hopes, and esp Orser's and Raf too on the female side, they look to be on a downward trajectory, especially with Japanese and Russian girls challenging the 3A, esp Kihira (she's optimistic about her 4T and even thinking of debuting it this coming season.)

by Anonymousreply 67August 17, 2018 5:24 AM

If Orser had another male contender in 2022 besides Gogolev, would he be able to hide his bias? Stephen's his baby, he's been coaching him since he was 7, has been touting him for years, slipping in his name in all the Fernandez/Hanyu interviews. I also see more articles cropping up about Stephen being the great new hope for Canada.

I'm curious about Shingo (well, not really). Hanyu moved to Toronto and made the sacrifices he did because his training conditions in JPN weren't great and he had outgrown his previous coach. I don't see Shingo being in the same position, so not clear why the move was necessary.

by Anonymousreply 68August 17, 2018 5:38 AM

Takahashi won't be performing at Prince Ice World and Friends on Ice. He pulled his left abductor's? muscle. According to his doctor, it's a mild injury but requires some rest. We won't be able to see his new programs until later, but he should be better by competition time.

Honda Marin is practicing 3Lz+3Lo.

Another photo of Shoko Uno.

So the deal with Orser includes dance and paris? The entire Team China?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 69August 17, 2018 5:52 AM

R69 Not clear what the terms of the deal are, but in the promo photos, Sui/Han were among the skaters Brian and Tracy were coaching.

Eteri may well get the last laugh in 2022. Despite all the talk of skaters leaving, her A-listers stayed. Not to discount Med and she's definitely a big star now, but I don't think she's a serious contender for 2022.

by Anonymousreply 70August 17, 2018 5:57 AM

R69 That's too bad about Dai. I was looking forward to seeing more of his programs because I wasn't wild about the clip that was released. Shoma definitely makes a better looking girl than Hanyu. Despite being a girly looking man, Hanyu makes an ugly ass girl. Shoma might actually pass. It was awesome the way he was holding that purse during the program.

R68 He can't hide his bias towards Fernandez over the years even when Hanyu has been the biggest star of his club who brought him reputation and money. So why he has to hide it when everybody knows how much he adores and coddles Gogolev. Even if he wants, he can't. I mean... see how passionately he gush over Gogolev whenever he can. The boy is definitely his biggest hope, the beloved "son" out of all his students. He will try his best to back up him for next Olympics.

by Anonymousreply 73August 17, 2018 2:29 PM

R68 Given the look on Orser's face after his skate at Minto, Shingo probably should have remained in Japan.

R69 I don't see Med as a serious contender in 2022 either. Too many weaknesses.

by Anonymousreply 74August 17, 2018 2:29 PM

R73 Completely agree about the bias towards Javi. A strong argument can be made that it was this bias that cost Hanyu the World title in 2016.

Not sure about Gogolev though. He does have the jumps (currently) but that's pretty much it at this point. I know Orser would love to be the coach of the male skater who can finally win that elusive OGM for Canada. But I'm not sure he sees him as the son he never had--which I think he definitely did with Javi.

by Anonymousreply 75August 17, 2018 2:37 PM

R67 I definitely think Orser saw Boyang as his Hanyu replacement. And that he didn't clear taking him on with Hanyu first--which I think any decent coach would do--has really altered how I view him now. His treatment of Nam Nguyen when he had that growth spurt and lost his jumps wasn't great either.

by Anonymousreply 76August 17, 2018 2:54 PM

Imagine how Orser would have treated Hanyu if he hadn't had the amazing results he had - I think we're seeing that with Shingo. And there's always the passive-aggressive digs at Yuzu from Orser about living with mommy. WTF? What if someone had dropped 17 year old Brian in Japan and said, ok, now just make it, with your all-Japanese-speaking all-the-time coaching staff.

OTOH, I think the bit of distance between Brian and Yuzu gave him the freedom to avoid the stupid Elvis/Beatles/Chaplin sort of crap that Javi was stuck with, like Brian reliving his own 1970s youth/style thru a mini-me. Yuzu could and did resist that, pretty much, especially after he broke away from hackneyed David Wilson. And he also said fuck off when Brian said don't train the loop/Lutz.

And to be fair, Orser has some fine things to say about Yuzu, at least when it comes to skating/jumping - that he gives TCC a "wow moment" every day - that it's "for sure" that Yuzuru is the GOAT - I remember one interview where he actually said that Javi really didn't come close to Yuzu, who "just soars" and Brian stands at the side of the rink and just marvels at him. And he seemed very pleased at the Kobe ice show and liked a few Instagrams of Yuzuru having fun with the other skaters, as though it really touched Brian, who said it was so good to see Yuzu happy again, "like the old days" (something close to that.)

It's complicated but I think there's a begrudging sort of love between Brian and Yuzu - not as pure an affection as with Tracy or Ghislain - but I'm not sure that's in Brian anyway. Even Javi never reached Yuzu-level confidence, even with girlfriends supporting him - well, back to how wise Yuzuru and his family was to send mom along. Wish Shingo's family could have done the same - though someone upthread is probably right and he doesn't have the talent, certainly not Yuzuru level, and Brian's a bit spoiled, with what he's had to work with.

You know, I never really understood Adam's reason for first switching away from Orser to Ghislain or somebody - and then to Raf - but I bet it was the lack of emotional support, which he DID find with Raf. I used to think of him as cold/gruff, but now, not so much. A bit blunt but I think he has it in him to really deeply care - rare enough, so good on him.

by Anonymousreply 77August 17, 2018 3:14 PM

Have we been infested by trolls or something? What's up with all, that idiotic bunching up on Orser? Because what, his world doesn't revolve only around Hanyu? That he dared to do his coaching duty to and like Fernandez? That he was thinking about his school's future and wanted to take on Jin? That what, if Hanyu hadn't been a star champion he would have... What, been abused? Because you are speaking almost like Orser was abusing Nishiyama when all he did was not being all smiley and happy when the kid a terrible skate. Jesus fuck, Orser has been never nothing but warm, complementary and supportive of Hanyu, can you freaks fucking stop with that glass-figurine poor-mistreated Hanyu meme? What, a coach is allowed to care only for one student? If he cares for others it means he doesn't care for Hanyu? Have you bunch taken into consideration that Orser is not a single-target obsessed fangirl and doesn't think like that? I just fucking can't.

And I'm saying that as a huge Hanyu fan, for fuck's sake.

by Anonymousreply 78August 17, 2018 4:00 PM

I remember reading about the small digs of Yuzuru having his mom with him. I am personally glad he still has his mom with him. She is a big support for him. I hope for the competitions Ghislain goes with Yuzuru. I think they have a better relationship. Maybe Brian did see Boyang as a Hanyu replacement. Imo nobody can replace Hanyu. He is a once in a lifetime skater.

by Anonymousreply 79August 17, 2018 4:05 PM

To continue the thought: why does the fact that Hanyu's close to Trace and Ghislain have to mean he's not close to Orser? What kind logic is that? Sure, he's gonna have a different relationship with each of them, but why does their relationship have to be "begrudging"? Because Orser has never shown any resentment towards Hanyu nor Hanyu to Orser, they seem to genuinely appreciate each other, no fakeness there detected.

by Anonymousreply 80August 17, 2018 4:09 PM

R78. I see what you are saying. I know I am not against orser too much. He has done great things for Hanyu. . I do know he has said a few things some may not care for. But he is human. However I do not really agree with him and Tracy going back and forth to China. That is just how I feel about that situation.

by Anonymousreply 81August 17, 2018 4:11 PM

r79 If you're reading Orser's observations about Hanyu and his mom as digs, how do you read Orser's observations about Fernandez being lazy and skipping practice?

by Anonymousreply 82August 17, 2018 4:11 PM

R66: With the exception of Hanyu, the rest of that crew have no future in skating. I don’t see them as being motivated people. China is hosting the next Olympic Games, so if they get medals, that’s a bump in stature. I really think he took a good look at his senior skaters and made a very smart decision.

R82: At 23, is Hanyu going to become more independent and live on his own? Javier was lazy and skipped practice

R78:. Orser made the comment about kids graduating college and moving back home. Are these two motivated to move on with life? The guy wants to move on and coach others. He doesn’t need permission.

R77: Raf encourages Adam to starve to death. Oddly enough, when Rippon started working out and building muscle mass, his career took an upswing. This is what he was told to do while at TCC and he ignored it then.

R76: Nam ignored Orser’s advice to start working out. If you are going to ignore your coach, you should get booted.

by Anonymousreply 83August 17, 2018 4:24 PM

In Brian's defense, I don't think Hanyu's the easiest student either. By Orser's account, Hanyu didn't really communicate well with him in the beginning (in his interview for media day 2017, Orser seemed very happy that that aspect of their relationship had improved). Orser's also talked about how Hanyu went for months practicing just jumps and ignoring his coaches' advice, like he would just nod and agree with whatever they said and then go off and did his own thing for months. I can see why people don't think their relationship is exactly warm. But despite his looks and smiliness, I don't see Hanyu as this warm, sweet innocent. I don't think people are realistic about what it takes to stay on top for as long as Hanyu has. Obviously, Hanyu is getting what he wants out of the Orser relationship or he wouldn't have stayed after Worlds 2016.

by Anonymousreply 84August 17, 2018 4:26 PM

Love the Shoko picture R69. I agree - Shoma makes a better girl than Hanyu, or most anybody. Such big pretty eyes. His size helps too. Hanyu has to in repose to look pretty in a girlish way - it's all ruined when he smiles too big or scrunches his face up to make wrinkles around his eyes. Weird. Someone earlier predicted he wouldn't age well -- as gorgeous as I thought Johnny Weir was, I don't think he's aged as well as Lambiel, who looks better now than he used to. (Buttle's another one I don't think has aged well - I was surprised to see how cute he used to be in some early videos I was watching.)

Oh, and on those getting upset about complaints - why can't we be as catty and bitchy as we want about Orser - or Hanyu - or Dai - or, well, anybody? I thought that was exactly what Datalounge was for. If you want praise and propriety and only sensible observations, never going too far or conjecturing in a "rude" way -- maybe this isn't exactly the place for that kind of self-policing? Maybe try Golden Skate?

by Anonymousreply 85August 17, 2018 4:54 PM

R85 Thank you for saying what I was about to. Those of you who can't deal with criticism of skaters and coaches need to go to Golden Skate or Planet Hanyu and post over there if you can't tolerate any criticism of these people.

by Anonymousreply 86August 17, 2018 5:04 PM

any criticism of these people. ??? which people we can talk about?? The point is you only criticize people around him, coaches , other skaters and hanyu is always a fucking victim and you treat him like 10 years old

by Anonymousreply 87August 17, 2018 5:08 PM

R85 I think the people who are annoyed by the Orser bashing don't see it so much as Orser bashing as overprotectiveness of Hanyu and his superfans' tendency to jump all over people they don't think treat Hanyu with due reverence and love. Someone upthread compared Orser negatively to Raf and his deep affection for his students. I love Raf and all and do think he loves his students, but if Raf said half the things he said about Nathan and his family about Hanyu, I think there would be a massive riot.

by Anonymousreply 88August 17, 2018 5:10 PM

R84 How about he's STILL doing his own thing NOW regardless of what Orser tells him to do? It's more like Orser is more familiar with Hanyu's working style rather than Hanyu became more obedient and easier than before. And who said Hanyu is closer to Tracy and Briand than Orser ? God knows who he's really close to. R85 Yeah, this place isn't for hypocrites and the ones who can't stand cristism and sarcasm. R87 C'mon. Take it easy. Why you got mad, they even didn't insult the lord and savior Brian Orser.

by Anonymousreply 89August 17, 2018 5:16 PM

R87 Hello Daitroll, I see you've found us! I wanted to clarify a point with you, do you think the people here are cocksuckers or no? Wasn't sure from your previous comments.

by Anonymousreply 90August 17, 2018 5:16 PM

R89 LOL I think that's right. But now Hanyu says it to Orser's face, "I will do what I want to do regardless of what you tell me."

by Anonymousreply 91August 17, 2018 5:20 PM

R91: You are 23, wealthy, and live with your mother.

by Anonymousreply 92August 17, 2018 5:26 PM

R92 "You are fat and when I leave, you will have nothing but a few instagram whorelets."

by Anonymousreply 93August 17, 2018 5:31 PM

R92: You live with your mom. I win.

by Anonymousreply 94August 17, 2018 5:40 PM

Mother will be with me always, but everyone who matters will leave you eventually, including the entire Chinese team. Yuna and the disappointed 1984/1988 Canadian skating fans also send their love.

by Anonymousreply 95August 17, 2018 5:49 PM

I meant R93. I’m tired after last nights Pooh Bear bonfire. Pack your blankie and Mom and leave Canada. R95: Whatever Norman Bates, without me, you would have enjoyed a silver with Yuna.

by Anonymousreply 96August 17, 2018 5:52 PM

Eteri, Tursy, and Sasha Trusova adding their best wishes to R95's love letter to Bri (who's having trouble concentrating over the blaring karaoke machine and Jason and Evgenia having a disco dance-off.)

by Anonymousreply 97August 17, 2018 6:05 PM

Take care, Brian Orser, when Chinese say "bring the bingo" they mean, "bring us 3 OGMs in 2022 or we put melamine in your metamucil and watch you explode from shame." Good luck, Brian Orser, thanks for laffs!

by Anonymousreply 98August 17, 2018 6:11 PM

R97: I bring in his stalkers and he’s still here. Does Godzilla skate? If he does bring him over. Eteri, who has killed ladies skating, and who? R98: Japan, Korea had such great success back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 99August 17, 2018 6:16 PM

I pity the poor Chinese judges on 2022 Olympics panel. To avoid melamine in their metamucil , they will all be suspended by ISU

by Anonymousreply 100August 17, 2018 6:25 PM

Oh I'm still here, R99, locked in the back room with mum, plotting world domination. You know you've never been anything without my alter, Yuna, and me - and it was I who got Javi to practice, not you, you grumpy little gnome!

by Anonymousreply 101August 17, 2018 6:28 PM

R100 It might be exciting to see the Russians and Chinese go at it. I hope a Chinese ladies singles skater who can only jump doubles unseats one of the Eteri bots.

by Anonymousreply 102August 17, 2018 6:36 PM

R89. I said Hanyu is closer to Ghislain. It very much looks like it to me.

by Anonymousreply 103August 17, 2018 6:42 PM

{[R90] hah you re so dumb .. we know you love dai , dear cockersucker , but you cannot admit it and yiu re so angry that he is back... jerk off with yourself and leave me alone.... i found you here quite time ago motherfucker i posted here already

by Anonymousreply 104August 17, 2018 6:42 PM

R101: Still afraid of Japan and hiding in Canada with Mommy. World domination? I’m gonna turn the lights out in that back room and listen to you sobbing and screaming in fear I took the Pooh bear night light out.

by Anonymousreply 105August 17, 2018 6:45 PM

I wonder how Skate Canada feels about TCC's partnership with the Chinese?

by Anonymousreply 106August 17, 2018 6:48 PM

Here's your girl, R102: Li Xiangning, 2017 International Cup of Nice silver medalist, and future first to take gold at Beijing 2022 in both singles and pairs!

by Anonymousreply 107August 17, 2018 6:48 PM

R104. Wow! You're unhinged! You must know Dai probably won't be a threat right? You're not one of the trolls that make pages online to harass Hanyu right?

by Anonymousreply 108August 17, 2018 6:50 PM

You've forgotten who's The King, R105. Dai hasn't forgotten, lying in his hospital bed, clutching his aching hip abductor.

by Anonymousreply 109August 17, 2018 6:55 PM

Omg you all are too much. I return from taking my pet to the vet and I come back to these great funny posts. Good job!

by Anonymousreply 110August 17, 2018 6:56 PM

R109: lying in a hospital bed clutching a hip abductor is way better than being 23 yo, lying in a darkened back room, clutching your momma’s breast asking for milk. Yeah, King.

by Anonymousreply 111August 17, 2018 7:03 PM

R107 thank you! At last I have a ladies competitor to root for!!

by Anonymousreply 112August 17, 2018 7:08 PM

The Cup of Nice has been cancelled this year. So Li Xiangning will have the honour to be the last Silver medallist of the CoN?

by Anonymousreply 113August 17, 2018 7:10 PM

Oh R111, go back to counting your Olympic gold med.... oh wait. And break it to poor Dai that he can't catch me - he can't even get out of the starting gate. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 114August 17, 2018 7:16 PM

R113 She's already a legend! uh, among Chinese skating women... admittedly not a high bar? I'm sure Orser will whip her into shape, like Adam and Tursy and Nam... Will he even be allowed to work with Boyang? Or if he is, will he have to fly to Harbin every time?? And does Orser even do skating skills - I thought that was Tracy's domain. And Ghislain for fixing Boyang's jump landings... What does Orser do? Just be the WASP who takes credit for what everybody else does? (kidding - I'm sure he's a prince among men - just not The King ;)

by Anonymousreply 115August 17, 2018 7:23 PM

R115 Since I've been somewhat critical of Orser, I'll sing his praises a bit and say that he is very generous about crediting other coaches for his success. And to his credit, he does always appear to treat that Pooh tissue box with the greatest care and respect--although this could be due to fear of what some Yuzu fans might do to him if he didn't.

by Anonymousreply 116August 17, 2018 7:40 PM

[R108} of course he is not a threat, you idiot so why you re so angry hat he is back ??? we know you love him so much, hypocrite . Dont worry you can watch em both

by Anonymousreply 117August 17, 2018 7:55 PM

On Hanyu being 23 and still living with mama: But aren't geniuses like that? Like, they are so focused on doing the thing they love and excel at, that they really can't be bothered with anything else, up to and including life? That's why you see geniuses who are penniless neglecting to take care of themselves and living in squalor and those are rich hire personal caretakers and assistants? I kind of put Hanyu in this category. His mom is apparently like his personal manager of sorts and even takes care of the commercial and branding side things for him, and is supposedly paid for it. In his DnD character sheet, he probably invested 2/3 of his given points in Skating Supremacy (class-specific attribute for Skater) and the rest in Intelligence, Charisma and Dexterity and 0 to a low value for everything else. He's probably used his EXP to increase his Wisdom as well over the years but he still spends most of them in Skating Supremacy and probably never bothered investing more than 1 or 2 points in others and his Constitution is probably still at 0. Or maybe it's finally increased to 1. But it all paid off in the form of two gold medals and once-in-a-lifetime skating brilliance. Maybe if Orser had been less a stickler on his Western sensibilities of living independently, maybe he'd already have that gold.

Just kidding, lol. I do think Orser has been good for Hanyu. Like the guy may not agree with all of Hanyu's decision from the get-go, because the guy is a professional and therefore has his own professional approach, but instead of letting his ego get in the way, he does accept and doesn't force what he thinks is right on Hanyu. Instead, he works with Hanyu based on Hanyu's style. He doesn't necessary always agree with it at first but when it pans out, he's willing to admit that Hanyu had a point in insisting he does it his way and learns how to navigate in future interactions. He's asked for compromise when Hanyu wanders too near towards self-destruction, and Hanyu's learned to pull back a little and to listen a bit (after some hard lessons) which is a big part of why he succeeded instead of simply going down in flames. I think it's the kind of relationship where both parties grow as humans and as professionals.

I think their relationship is kind of like a parent and child one, too, but a different kind than than the usual. Hanyu doesn't need coddling or discipline, he needs someone to guide him when he gets lost but willing to let go when he's found his way. And he's the sort who insists on building his own path instead of having one shown to him.

While she takes care of his daily mundane needs and provides a listening year, I doubt his mother coddles him based on the way she and her husband allowed him to make his own choices even when he was just a little kid (they suggested that he get into baseball instead when he was caught ditching skating practice to play it but the kid wanted to stick with figure skating and after making sure that skating is really what he wanted, they didn't force the issue). Hanyu needs freedom to do that and he's gotten that with Orser and TCC (facilities, environment, the works), along with all the things he needed to get to where he is, which is probably why he stuck around.

by Anonymousreply 118August 17, 2018 8:46 PM

Also, his entire career is driven by no one himself with everyine just being along for the ride. He's revealed in interviews that any time he complains about something being too hard, they would ask him, "Well, do you want to stop?" And when he seems like he wanted to give up, they were like, "Well, okay then. If you're sure that's what you want" But then he'd be like, "You know what? Fuck that. I'm gonna get over this and I'm gonna kick ass.". And they're like, "Sure thing son. Just tell us what you need and we'll provide." That's apparently the kind of supportive environment he's been getting his whole life and I think he found it in TCC, who are willing to listen and give him what he needs, along with all the other things athletes need to, you know, become first class so.

by Anonymousreply 119August 17, 2018 9:00 PM

Re: R119

Sorry, by "they", I meant his folks.

by Anonymousreply 120August 17, 2018 9:02 PM

I like little Stephen Gogolev. I've seen him analyze his own performance at a K&C with Orser and he was mature and thoughtful. The Canadians have a way of fucking up good things though so I hope they don't overhype and make everyone hate him before he's even ready.

by Anonymousreply 121August 17, 2018 9:05 PM

Or maybe it's simply because TCC doesn't kick him out for being a bullheaded little shit who doesn't listen. Because that's apparently what they kept doing at skating classes when he was little. It was a pretty common occurrence that he got kicked out of skating classes or got time-outs for not listening but when asked, he said he couldn't understand why they kept booting him out when he *was* listening, but maybe in his own way. Mind you, he answered this when he was about 12 or so.

by Anonymousreply 122August 17, 2018 9:14 PM

many people at 23 live with parents. They have to

by Anonymousreply 123August 17, 2018 9:17 PM

I love that story about Hanyu's father, a former baseball player himself, telling him to take up baseball if skating bored him because it wouldn't cost the family so much money. Wise way to handle your little phenom.

If Gogolev's parents were wise, they would do everything they could to shield him from the public eye until he's older. There is no way of knowing now if he will be able to retain his jumps as he grows or if he will suffer a career-ending injury. You see this scenario happening over and over again with these little phenoms. Same goes for Alyssa Liu.

by Anonymousreply 124August 17, 2018 9:21 PM

R124 That's why I think Orser needs to STFU about Gogolev. FS fandom can be nasty both fans and antis and he needs to shield him from all that judgment until he is mature enough to handle it.

by Anonymousreply 125August 17, 2018 9:31 PM

I don't know much about Gogolev but he's good -looking and has great potential. Current junior men's field of Japan, US, and Russia is quite weak. I think Gogolev has no rival. With his quad arsenal, I don't think anyone can beat him unless he mess up. And he will dominate Canada's men field soon. Japan has Shun Sato ( 14 years old) and Kao Miura (13) who have some good qualities. Shun has consistent 3A, Miura has 4T ( heavily underotated but well...) but I'm not sure if they can do big.

by Anonymousreply 126August 17, 2018 9:34 PM

All young phenoms have great potential. That doesn't necessarily mean they will all realize that potential. Most of them don't.

by Anonymousreply 127August 17, 2018 9:45 PM

r89 r103 I can't remember when, but in an interview Hanyu said that Ghislain was like a father and Tracy was like a mother. I don't remember him ever saying anything like that about Brian. Don't know if things have changed since then, but at least at one point, it seems he was closer to those 2 than Brian. I find it strange that Brian and Tracy get full coaching credit while Ghislain seems to get overlooked

r115 I always wonder exactly what Brian does. There seems to be a separate coach for jumps, spins, and skating skills. Way back when, Hanyu said something about how he doesn't do anything all that different as far as technical aspect but is able to prep for competition so maybe Brian takes care of the mental aspect? But then later, it seemed that Tracy is the one he went to when he was having problems. I guess he designs the training schedule and figures out how to help his skaters peak for competition?

by Anonymousreply 128August 17, 2018 9:46 PM

R128: I think Orser's the one who devises training plans accordingly and gels all the different aspects of training together to form a final output. The macro-managing big picture guy, who also looks into the finer details when needed. The one who's driving the boat, so to speak.

by Anonymousreply 129August 17, 2018 10:45 PM

Orser also said in an interview that he typically spends an hour each day individually with Yuzu and with Javi.

And regarding Yuzu not listening to Brian, I don't think this is true. I think he is very open to listening to advice and considering it carefully; however, in the end he makes his own decision about the matter. And often it's the right decision--e.g., the decision to master the 4Loop. If Nathan hadn't screwed up his SP, Yuzu would definitely have needed that jump to have any chance of winning.

by Anonymousreply 130August 17, 2018 10:50 PM

R130: Good point. I don't know about everyone who said the same but when I said he doesn't listen, I actually more meant he doesn't simply do what he's told. Like you said, he'll weigh it and may incorporate certain aspects of what he considers as advice or input but ultimately does things his way. Which is probably why even as a kid, even when he did listen, because ultimately what he did wasn't 100% what he was told, it automatically translated to disobedience that deserves to be punished to the authority (ie: adults), especially in a society like Japan where the words of the elder or more senior is expected to be regarded as gospel. So when a little kid doesn't do as he's told, it's simple disobedience, plain and simple. They're quite black and white like that. Sure makes his parents parenting skills ones to be admired, that they didn't expect their kid to simply listen and follow, but listened back in return.

by Anonymousreply 131August 17, 2018 11:23 PM

r130 A clean Hanyu would have won without a 4 loop. The reason his score was so much lower in the free skate is because the mistake on the 2nd 4 toe caused a rep penalty (and of course the loss in GOE on 4toe and 3 lutz). Even a clean 3 quad free skate Hanyu could have won the competition. Both his 2015 NHK and 2015 GPF free skates had higher scores than Nathan's Olympic free skate. And Nathan's highest ever short program score was 104.12 so Hanyu would have entered the free skate with a 7.46 point cushion.

by Anonymousreply 132August 17, 2018 11:27 PM

R132: Logically, that assumption would be correct. But there are also other factors to consider, namely, judges' bias and whimsy. I don't think Hanyu wants to leave even the smallest bit of his fate in the hands of these people, especially not with a cushion as low as that (to him), and based on scores from past seasons, which shouldn't be used as THE guideline for future seasons, since the momentum gets reset at the start of every season. And it's because he doesn't that he's managed to stay on top these past few years despite the climbing competition. So even though he doesn't technically need the 4Lo, assuming he's able to pull it off, he'd be safer with it strategically than without had Chen pulled off a clean SP.

by Anonymousreply 133August 17, 2018 11:40 PM

And what Hanyu is potentially able to do affects not only his own confidence in himself but others' view of him - possibly rattling Nathan more than he would have been if he knew that Hanyu only had the toe and Salchow and hadn't even tried to advance further. The judges see Hanyu differently, knowing he's got 4 quads than they would if he only had 2. Hell, look where his repertoire has gotten little Shoma, of the 99% torqued knee saves - it's a magic charm to have that in your D&D bag of magic tricks. It makes you a wizard instead of a yeoman.

I think Hanyu requires seeing himself on the top shelf, not Chan-like surfing on past glories and formerly glorified abilities - look where that got Chan - who even, himself, added a Salchow way on up in years. The best keep striving to do it all. Sometimes they touch the sun and plummet down to earth, shattering into pieces. Sometimes they reach that unreachable star. Someone commented recently that back in Button's day (and before), it was pretty much the norm to have a single leader with multiple golds - but he was doing the double axel, right? It's like comparing Ferraris to Model T's. And Button was the Model T to horse and buggy. What Hanyu did was practically undoable, and seen that way, but he made himself seem, well, like the wizard he made himself into, with his D&D sheet.

And I agree, he probably had to do it the way he did, personal life-wise. Everybody's different but we don't let them be. In real life, the "life long bachelor" or the guy who still lives with mom has always been a "type" - and in his case, a type with a burning, relentless reason. Now let the gatekeeper come try to shoo me away as a Hanyu uber. When you're that extraordinary, it will be ever thus, in the year of your prime. It'll fade - we'll see how he handles being Dick Button or Mark Spitz or Michael Phelps...whatever. New challenge but he isn't even quite done trying to level up with this character, though he's just about reached its limit. It'll be interesting to see this plays denouement. Maybe the haters will finally get their revenge, but they can't in all honesty say he's just another skater so shuttupabout'im. It ain't time yet!

by Anonymousreply 134August 17, 2018 11:54 PM

Oh, bitch, please. Let me give you a Pooh bear tissue to cry into. It belongs to a wealthy 23 yo WHO LIVES WITH HIS MOM.

Who thinks Hanyu will hold records under the new scoring system?

by Anonymousreply 136August 18, 2018 12:38 AM

Are we sure Hanyu's wealthy? I keep hearing the Japanese fed drains its show horses dry with a deep cut of their earnings. He doesn't have an agency (whatever that means) - wonder why? Oh well, it is what it is. Are there any male figure skaters who aren't weirdos? I mean, there must be - maybe our homeboy Nathan? Lambiel and his live in Lolita-like protege'? Evangelical homophobe Scotty Hamilton? Gay homophobe and Vera Wang poodle Evan Lysacek? Wacky Weir? Crazy driven brilliant John Curry?? .....

Oh and I don't think so, R136. I think he's still a bit lame (physically) - possibly for good and all. (which might be Dai's eventual prognosis, as it was his previous one, which drove him out of the sport). I think it gets to most of them - bodies weren't made to slam their skeletons into the ice that many times from that height at that speed. I think it was Hanyu himself who said you can't speed up evolution. There's a physical limit and there's a physical price. Now here's where the cautious ones might get their due, a la Kostner, but I bet they have to come from obscure countries vis a vis skating - I really thought/think Med should wait out the year or two and come back skating for Armenia, but I think that Russia has to let her ??

by Anonymousreply 137August 18, 2018 12:47 AM

At least if Hanyu IS wealthy, due to his strange personality and habits, we can be all but certain his fortune won't be sniffed up his nose, leaving him bankrupt and bereft. A final clear advantage of a hermit living with mom - I knew there was something to be said for that...

by Anonymousreply 138August 18, 2018 12:50 AM

I think Hanyu is plenty weird, but living with a parent isn't the reason. Culturally, don't most Japanese live with their parents until they're married which, on average, is about 30 years old or so? And we're not even talking about the elite athletes who just don't live like normal people because they have such a condensed timeframe to do what they need to do.

by Anonymousreply 139August 18, 2018 12:53 AM

A lot of people point to judge bias possibly holding Hanyu back but the judge bias was already there at this past Olympics and he was still getting some of the highest GOE's he's ever gotten. I think he only got higher GOE's at 2015 GPF and then only marginally.

And if we're playing the "what if" game, also keep in mind that 104.12 is Nathan's HIGHEST SP score. His average score in the Grand Prix and worlds is only 102.48, which when added to his free skate score is 317.56, which is still lower than Hanyu's actual total score of 317.85. It is also likely that Nathan would have choked in the free if he had the pressure of still being a contender. Nathan himself said he skated so well because the pressure was off - twice, we saw how he handled the pressure in the short program. The team event is a complete joke and the US was almost assured of bronze either way and Nathan still choked.

A clean 3 axel instead of the mistake on the 4 toe would likely have netted Hanyu around 6 more points just in TES and likely an additional 3 or 4 point in PCS. Hanyu didn't land the 4 loop the whole season yet he still set a new SP record and almost matched it at the Olympics. There's no reason to think that he would have suddenly gotten lower scores without it.

I mainly dislike this narrative that "Nathan would have won if only..." All evidence points to that being untrue yet people steadfastly stick to it. Sure, if Nathan skated better than he ever has in his career, he could have won if Hanyu skated exactly the same. You can also say that about Shoma and Javi. Hell, since we're already diving into fantasy land, "if only" Kolyada didn't constantly splat all over the place and landed all the quads he is supposedly capable of, he could have won. "If only" Jin Boyang attempted all the quads he was capable of and skated the 2 best programs of his life he could have won.

r136 ISU reset the progression of highest scores so a lot of people will be setting "records" next year. It's actually easier to get higher scores in the short program with the new judging system.

I'm guessing Hanyu will get that 4 loop back since he was already practicing it at the Olympics unless his ankle is permanently fucked and can't handle the consistent pounding. If he skates a clean 4 quad free skate, he should actually be able to break all his old scores if judging actually follows the guidelines in the new system.

by Anonymousreply 140August 18, 2018 1:13 AM

R139. People in the U.S. are living with their parents for a longer period f time too. I don't find it strange at all that Hanyu lives with his parents. I don't find it weird his mom goes with him still to Toronto. I believe he needs her very much. She does more than just cook for him. She is his support imo. What do you find strange about Hanyu? Maybe carrying pooh might be strange but I think it's more of pooh gives him some sort of comfort.

by Anonymousreply 141August 18, 2018 1:16 AM

R141 I think anyone who singlemindedly pursues a goal since childhood at the cost of his personal life and his physical well being is pretty weird but then again I'm not an elite athlete.

by Anonymousreply 142August 18, 2018 1:29 AM

R142. Hmmm. I guess it can be looked at as weird. I find it sad as well. What he gave up to achieve what he has done. He says he is happy. Sometimes I wonder if true. He may be happy at winning but is he happy? Like truly happy?

by Anonymousreply 143August 18, 2018 1:39 AM

R142: That's what happens when we can't relate. I'm sure there are plenty of driven people who don't find it strange at all. And let's not forget that there are also plenty of people who aren't driven in any way at all and yet end up with not much of a personal life either. I don't necessarily consider that weird either so I don't find it weird that driven people are are able to sacrifice what they could have for the possibility of getting to they absolutely want. I feel that finding something like that weird seems like something people who are buried so deep in mediocrity, they can't see anything that isn't mediocre (doesn't matter if it's below.Or above mediocre standard) as not strange.

by Anonymousreply 144August 18, 2018 1:45 AM

Correction to r144: getting what* they absolutely want

by Anonymousreply 145August 18, 2018 1:46 AM

Just read what I wrote. Wrote "actually" 3 times in 3 sentences and 3-4 more points in PCS when that obviously isn't true since he scored 96.62. My one criticism of DL is that you can't edit posts when you write something embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 146August 18, 2018 3:02 AM

Can you gauge charisma at age 13 and a half? Stephen Gogolev surprised me with his calm demeanor and apparent intelligence in the linked interview. Maybe we're looking at our next superstar?

And I 'think' he'll be a looker. So Nordic-blond though. I'm worried he'll follow the growth pattern of Nam and Orzel (and maybe Cha) - I'd love to know how tall his parents are. It feels like 5'8" or 5'9" may be the new cutoff for superstardom as a male quadster. The ligaments of taller skaters aren't that much stronger, if any, to handle the extra load.

Some of the interview questions are stupid but... well, after cringeing through poor Vincent Zhou at 17 -- I was pleasantly surprised.

by Anonymousreply 147August 18, 2018 10:59 AM

Got curious and found this - no wonder the best are so skinny (or else, super-short like Shoma):

"According to the laws of physics, said Samaras, taller people experience more stress on their bodies. More height means more weight and volume without a matching increase in strength. For example, a 6-foot, 190-pound person is 73 percent heavier than a 5-foot, 110-pounder. But the 6-footer will only have a corresponding increase of 44 percent in the strength of muscles, bones, joints, ligaments and tendons.

"In his book, Samaras concluded taller people are more prone to injuries in the joints and the back."

I've been feeling sorry for Javi not getting the silver because of a possible underrotation and overscoring of Shoma - although when I watched in real time, I thought Shoma's free skate was incredible - that last minute the best of show, including everybody, if you ask me.

Well, I was listening to former skater Paul Wylie calling Javi's skate in real time - and he thought Javi should have gotten an edge call on his triple Lutz - AND he thought Javi became sluggish after the midpoint and through his step sequence. He even said he thought at that point, Javi had lost any chance for a podium finish at all, let alone silver. After the popped Salchow quad became a double, his words were, "Indeed a medal an impossible dream at this point"

He called Shoma's too and picked up on some other flaws besides the fall on his opening quad - but he seemed to be expecting Uno's score to definitely surpass Boyang's (3rd before Shoma's skate) and possible or likely to pass Javi's.

So I feel less pouty now.

by Anonymousreply 149August 18, 2018 2:18 PM

I feel like I live in an alternate universe from some of you. I tried to watch Gogolev and he bores me to death. I never see him engaging the audience or having any sort of performance quality...just jumps. I realize he's young, but I'm not sold on the hype.

I also think it's hilarious that Johnny Weir gets so much sympathy here while Dai is apparently the devil reincarnated. Johnny was by FAR more bitchy and cunty than Dai has ever come across, and I say that as someone who loved both of them (Johnny has turned me off with his annoying NBC persona and hideous styling, alas).

Also, Shoma is fugly and overrated, and the hysterically hypocritical Yuzuru fangurls here have zero self awareness.

by Anonymousreply 150August 18, 2018 2:24 PM

Johnny was by FAR more bitchy and cunty than Dai - yes but never to hanyu, so it doesnt matter

by Anonymousreply 151August 18, 2018 3:06 PM

R151 oh Daitroll it's funny how you slip in and out of your bad English, like you're just here to mock Asian people or something.

R150 How was Johnny cunty? And please don't say to Evan. As for Dai, eh, I don't think there are that many haters here, it's just most people don't have an opinion because they haven't seen him skate or had much exposure to him. Whether or not he gets his jumps back, he's a very beautiful skater and dancer so unless the choreo sucks hard he should be fun to watch.

by Anonymousreply 152August 18, 2018 3:33 PM

[R152] slip in and out of your bad English ??? you think i do it for purpose? lol get a life sometimes I make a mistakes but you re dumb and you put too much into it.. .. i told you a truth. You love Weir so much because he adores Yuzury

by Anonymousreply 153August 18, 2018 3:39 PM

R150 I agree with your whole comment except the part about Shoma being fugly. Shoma is adorable and is getting better-looking as he ages. His jumps are a mess, though.

by Anonymousreply 154August 18, 2018 3:41 PM

R150 I think the Johnny affection just comes from the years of abuse he got, in a pretty disgusting and open way, from commentators and other skaters, and likely unfairness from the judges, so I think most people are willing to overlook whatever garden variety bitchiness they see from him.

by Anonymousreply 155August 18, 2018 3:56 PM

It'd been long time since the last time I checked GoldenSkate. Just visited it and.... wft a stupid thread in The edge called TCC, where:

-Jason Brown's fan, Med's fans go crazy over stupid things like haircuts, SNS action,...

-Canada's fs fans praise enthusiastically their country.

-And some stupid Hanyu fangurls tried to drag him into the thread so that he won't get left behind like Fernandez, Cha,....

A big joke.

R154 Uno: big nose and bad body proportions.

by Anonymousreply 156August 18, 2018 3:57 PM

Oddly enough, I think Uno's good looking, despite the fact that he needs lip balm, a nose job, to shave off and grow back his hair and transplant his head to a body with normal proportions. So basically everything except his eyes (I don't remember what his eyebrows look like). So odd how that works.

by Anonymousreply 157August 18, 2018 4:12 PM

R156 The average age on GS must be in the preteens. Even Denis Ten would have barfed at his own death thread.

by Anonymousreply 158August 18, 2018 4:16 PM

R156 R157 He has the facial structure to support his nose, he looks fine. He's no Plushenko. As for his body proportions, his only issue is weirdly short legs. If his legs were a few inches longer and everything else was the same everybody would be drooling over him.

He does desperately need to sort out his hair, but he grew up idolizing Takahashi, so fried orange highlights are to be expected and we should just be thankful he doesn't have a mullet and a soul patch.

by Anonymousreply 159August 18, 2018 4:22 PM

Anyone saying that Shoma would make a better looking girl than Hanyu is blind or delusional. The only thing Hanyu needs is some light make-up (eyeliner and some blush) and a scarf to hide his Adam's apple and he could already pass. Meanwhile there is nothing Shoma could do about his big head, big nose, deep set eyebrows. Saying Hanyu cannot pass as a girl because he has small eyes means millions of Japanese women are men since they have single eyelids.

by Anonymousreply 160August 18, 2018 5:17 PM

R160. I agree that Hanyu can pass as a lady. I posted before that I find him pretty. Shoma on the other hand doesn't look good at all dressed like a woman. He isn't my cup of tea though. Blush and lip gloss some would mistake Hanyu as a lady.

by Anonymousreply 161August 18, 2018 5:52 PM

Hanyu has no chin. But I don't care much. His body is a masterpiece.

by Anonymousreply 162August 18, 2018 5:56 PM

R162 you are wrong. Hanyu has 2 chins.

by Anonymousreply 164August 18, 2018 6:07 PM

R152. That Dai troll is trying to be clever. It jumps on almost every Hanyu post just to say something negative about him. I bet she has some blog dedicated to how much She can't stand Hanyu.

I know I have stated I don't care for Dai but I'm not jumping on every post that sings Dai's praises just to be an ass.

by Anonymousreply 184August 19, 2018 12:48 AM

r184 A small sect of people kept bitching whenever people wanted to talk about Hanyu so they started a separate thread to talk about skating. The "Yuzuru Hanyu and" part is just to let everyone know that it's okay to also talk about Hanyu.

There's 2 other figure skating threads but both are pretty dead so most people just chat on here

by Anonymousreply 187August 19, 2018 1:23 AM

If Orser hadn't put Eteri/Trusova down, saying her quads wouldn't last, it was pointless to praise them, blah blah, meanwhile telling anybody who'll listen about his little boy quadster phenom, I'd feel more positive about Gogolev. Nathan Chen said he had eight major injuries by the time he was 18 - one was a hip avulsion (bone related thing) and also Osgood - Schlatter disease. He said he knew the quads were a risk and as an elite skater, you just have to factor in the risk and go forward, or leave the sport (something like that - I can't find the interview, but he directly addressed the risks - he's no dummy.)

So, if a male skater and his family can decide the risk is one he's willing to take - who is Orser to decide that girls should never have such an opportunity because... well, it's other people's business when it comes to girls, not them and their families, like with Nathan and Gogo. Sometimes with Orser - ever since even the mess with Yuna Kim, when he decided it was fine to blab to his heart's content about her sudden leaving even though HE had met with Mao Asada witout telling her... anyway, I can't say I'm a huge fan and I should just leave it at that.... (and not take it out on Gogo - go get 'em boy - if you can). But Brian shdn't count his chickens before they hatch.

by Anonymousreply 188August 19, 2018 1:33 AM

There's a selection of twitter/Insta posts on ISU official website. This is what drew my attention. Had to Google grampus, sounds vaguely Harry Potter. Btw, there are no less than 4 Shoma mentions there. I'd be kinda impressed if more people actually visited the official ISU website.

R187 does anyone want that crown? Skates beautifully until he has to jump, then splat. All confidence, hype and swagger until it actually counts, then splat. All followed by a lifetime of wild eyed regret, self justification and teary caresses for one's Olympic Gold Medal (team event).

by Anonymousreply 190August 19, 2018 1:37 AM

r190 If you put it this way, there will be no successor to Patrick Chan because no one is actually skating beautifuly before splatting. Well, Messing has both solid jumps and solid skating skills, and Reynolds does land his jumps sometimes but they're not preceded by much skating. Lol, maybe I should have said Canadian crown. But I'm not so sure it's so much better.

Thanks for the link R193. I never get tired of watching him. The gifs reminded me of an interview with Dick Button about Hanyu - Dick said, "I think he's beautiful. He moves like a dream."

And to indulge in Hanyu-gush a bit more, quoting Robin Cousins: “It’s a calm, I’m going to say... It’s actually quite introverted [with Hanyu] , and it’s very – it’s quite soft and languid. He’s almost ethereal. He does have that aloof [quality] – I wouldn’t say tranquil because you can see it in his eyes, and I think this is what makes him unique. You don’t see the effort. That’s a really good thing. You never see the effort with Hanyu that you see with the other boys."

Responding to [bold]R 448[/bold] from thread 3:
[italic]1) Anyone, who has been following Takahashi's career during that time knows the context of those "violent" episodes you referred to. The way you put it made it sound like he has chronic anger issues. I'm sure most people can relate to crying or losing your temper out of frustration, disappointment, physical or mental exhaustion when no matter how badly you want to and how hard you try you can't overcome your own limitations at a certain point. Yes, he admitted he threw his cellphone at his trainer once and his bag and boots across the locker-room a couple of times in tears. He snapped when he had to take a slew of setbacks shortly before Sochi, exhausted from sleep deprivation due to the constant pain in his knee and the bothering medical contraption he had to wear at night and nothing worked out the way he imagined.[/italic]

No, it wasn’t just before Sochi. It happened over at least two Olympic cycles and the mobile phone-throwing incident wasn’t a one-time thing, according to his team and Takahashi himself.

Nikkei Shinbun (2012/1/26, [bold]about 2008[/bold] www. nikkei. com/article/DGXZZO38212760S2A120C1000000/?df=4) :
よく長光コーチらとケンカしました。原因は僕の八つ当たり。トレーナーには携帯を投げちゃったことも……。トレーニングより、心のケアのための時間の方が多かったと思います。”I often fought with Coach Nagamitsu and the others. I took my anger out on them. I even threw my mobile phone at my trainer…. I think I spent more time on my mental health than training.”

Nikkei Shinbun (2010/9/22, [bold]about 2009[/bold] www. nikkei .com/article/DGXZZO14974170Q0A920C1000000/):
疲れるとイライラして機嫌が悪くなってしまいます。今だから言えるのですが、去年は12月ごろまで本当にひどかった。いろんな人やモノに八つ当たりして、恥ずかしながら、携帯電話を壊しそうになったこともあります。”When I get tired, I become irritated and upset. I can finally talk about it now, but last year, I was particularly terrible until December. I took my anger out on many different people and things. It’s embarrassing, but I almost broke my mobile phone.”

Sports Hochi Shinbun (2011-10-26, about hiring Takahashi’s new agent Ihara from USM megalodon. jp /2011-1020-0546-42/hochi.yomiuri.co.jp/column/shirota/news/20111014-OHT1T00226.htm ):
Coach Nagamitsu, 本当に。しーちゃんと比べて、あの子は大変だと思うんですよ。しーちゃんはずっとモチベーションを保てる選手だったのに対して、大輔は浮き沈みが激しい。もう、ジェットコースターみたいに上がったり下がったりじゃないですか。井原さんもよくあれに付き合ってくれるなあ、と(笑)。色々な意味で彼がついてくださることは、大輔に大きな影響があります。“Honestly. I think he is a lot of trouble compared to Shizuka. While Shizuka was an athlete who was always motivated, Daisuke has extreme ups and downs. It’s like riding a roller coaster, going up and down like that. I can’t believe Ihara is also willing to put up with him. (laughs) But he’s been a big influence on Daisuke in many ways by sticking with him.”

On TV Asahi, “Hodo Station (2014-10-14)”:
Takahashi’s trainer Watanabe, 本人も言ってるんですけど、[bold]携帯投げつけられたり(笑)そんなんは結構あったんですけど、[/bold]苦しんでるなと思ってサポートしていました。“He said it himself, but he would chuck his mobile phone at me (laughs) and there was a lot of that, but I supported him because I felt he was really hurting.”

I don’t think your assessment of his psychological state is wrong. It’s only natural to blow up now and then in such an environment, especially when you’re preparing for a life-changing event like the Olympics. But even after acknowledging and apologizing for his actions, he still repeated those behaviors, and the man himself seemed to think he’s had chronic anger issues. But he was never vilified by the press for what he did (Can you imagine any other Japanese or foreign skater being treated the same way today?) and his team never left him while he would have been abandoned by a different coach. From the same interview I quoted, his coach said that she spoiled him and would have never gone so easy on him had he been a girl.

by Anonymousreply 196August 19, 2018 4:22 AM
[italic]Alternative explanation: Takahashi, who as stated didn't even want to hold a conference to begin with, wasn't involved in the scheduling at all and the date, which happened to be the first official day of the new skating season, was very likely set by his manager Ihara. Boring but logical.)[/italic]

Yes, I saw you made the same claim on GS and that clip you posted was actually from a show I’d posted before. I’m going to have to agree with what Kosugi from Burumayo said there, that any Japanese person would know that a press conference would be involved. This would be the second time he’s "accidentally" held a large press conference, and remember, he’s been working for Fuji TV for years now. He doesn’t strike me as stupid or naïve, or helpless against Ihara. They rented a large banquet hall in a swanky Tokyo hotel for all of the press they invited and had a photo op. It wasn’t even in Osaka where he’s based.

There are 2 pairs ( Calalang/Johnson, Digerness/Neudeckeat) USFSA Champs Camp. Possibly a skate off for the Skate America spot Others without a GP attending CC based on the group pic are Megan Wessenberg, Jimmy Ma, and Manta/Johnson, so they are those likely to get Skate America.

R196 R197 I don't understand why fs fans have this need to swarm to their idols' defense anytime they detect the slightest hint of criticism or evidence that their favorites aren't perfect Disney princes/princesses. So Dai likes to throw his phones/boots/tissues, is a disingenuous famewhore, and has shit taste in men (Nathan Chen?). Big fucking deal, does he need to be this guileless, perfect cinnamon roll for people to enjoy his skating? Why drag your ass from GS to an obscure gay gossip forum to defend everything he does? Before anyone accuses me of being some sort of Hanyu fangurl, please, there are Hanyu crazies freaking out on twitter because a few people lightly dragged him for not knowing how to wash dishes. Or the fangurls on this thread who can't countenance the fact that people might actually think Hanyu's weird (and no, it's not because they cannot think beyond their own mediocre existence). Honestly, I can't even visit the fanfests on GS for my favorite skaters because the posters are mortifying beyond belief.

by Anonymousreply 203August 19, 2018 7:33 AM

R201 I actually like Jimmy Ma, he's fun to watch. I was little surprised to find out that Morozov choreographs his short programs. Apparently he's skating to “Mi Gente” by J Balvin, Willy William and Beyoncé for his short. His free is choreo by Josh Farris and apparently begins with “Juke Jam” by Chance the Rapper and ends with “Call Out My Name” by The Weeknd.

by Anonymousreply 212August 19, 2018 8:27 AM

R188 Was the Orser/Mao Asada rumor ever confirmed? I think that was just one theory people floated (as to why Yuna dumped him). I think both Orser/Asada denied it (not saying that proves they didn't meet), but I don't think there was ever definitive proof.

R192 Is the Brian Orser/dog story the one about how his former partner accused him (in the palimony lawsuit) of putting down their dogs in a fit of pique over their breakup? Orser denied it and while I think Orser is neither a softie nor a saint, I wouldn't really trust the words of a ex trying to extort money from him in an acrimonious lawsuit.

by Anonymousreply 213August 19, 2018 8:41 AM
So, if a male skater and his family can decide the risk is one he's willing to take - who is Orser to decide that girls should never have such an opportunity because... well, it's other people's business when it comes to girls, not them and their families, like with Nathan and Gogo

hasn't Arutunyan suggested in his latest TSL interview that ISU should step in to stop the Quad girls because it is not good for their bodies to do all these quads at 13?

by Anonymousreply 214August 19, 2018 8:51 AM

R203: Ah. I get it now. So it's okay for some to judge, but not for others to judge them for judging. Because datalounge is a place where people bitching about others in a way that colors outside the confines of logic reign supreme and if you so much as try to point out the error in some of the applied logic you are automatically scorned as a fangurl who came from a much-disdained forum, regardless of whether or not you're a fan, or if you really did come from said forum, or even a girl. Ultimately not so different from the kind of society that calls someone a terrorist-sympathizer simply for defending Muslims. Alrighty then.

I wonder if Trump lurks around here, closet-case and secular society-bred fascist that he is. He'd love it here.

And no I'm not offended at all. I came in here knowing the place is trashy anyway and if I expected rational and civil argument/discussions, I really shouldn't be hanging around in here. Doesn't mean I can't express myself the way I want (like others are expressing themselves the way they want) and share my thoughts about posts I formulated an opinion on, seeing that all kinds should be welcome here. And hey, when I see a spade fancying itself a heart calling a diamond a club, I'm going to call that spade a spade.

Toodles! :)

by Anonymousreply 215August 19, 2018 8:59 AM

No, I don't have any definitive proof - just believed someone who said he had gone to a meeting with the Japanese fed, supposedly to discuss possible work with Asada. Maybe it's not true. I guess my complaints that I know are true are pretty mild: posing for a photo wearing a jacket with SAMBO written on it, standing by Evgenia; Eteri calling him out for not complimenting Trusova and him defending himself saying she'll lose the quads etc. You know, there's a video of Tursy doing a quad Salchow at the Cricket club - so he either didn't forbid her training it or she did it behind his back, but right there at the club.

And I did say Raf on TSL. I really feel like him and Raf kvetching about the Eteri girls' quads is either misogyny - or wanting to protect their own female students from having to compete with these girls - or both. Even Rika Kihira in Japan is training a quad toe. Does Raf really think it's "good" for male bodies to do the quads? If he'd been in charge way back when, he'd have told Midori Ito that women must never do the 3.5 rotations of the triple axel because... well, she might get hurt.

Fuck. ALL skaters get hurt - let them be, you patronizing sexist old jerks. No skating career lasts very long - if they want to risk injury to have a chance for glory, how very dare you telling them to stop, because they're girls - even though it's crystal clear they are capable - Trusova has what now? 3 quads, including the Lutz! Good for her!!

Younger kids skateboard, snowboard, ski jump, race bikes, play football, etc.... Should girls be prohibited from doing anything that might hurt them - meanwhile, full speed ahead, boys, your bodies belong to YOU - girls should have no say in what they do with theirs. Sounds like Saudi Arabia.

by Anonymousreply 216August 19, 2018 9:12 AM

* I meant to say I did SEE Raf on TSL. (I'm simply incapable of making a post without screwing something up....)

And what's with all the gatekeeping here? Let's Go Crazy if we want to, staying within the rules. Steaming bitchy gossip - isn't that what this place is for??

by Anonymousreply 217August 19, 2018 9:15 AM

R215 I normally skip over these posts that you helpfully sign "me," but made the mistake of reading this one. That is some daitroll levels of wigging out over...something, I can't tell.

R217 Gatekeeping is when people say, stop talking about X on this thread. If someone is being excessive or dumb, surely we're still allowed to say, you're an excessive, dumb, terrorist sympathizer. This is still DL after all.

by Anonymousreply 218August 19, 2018 9:22 AM

Con't from r215: Oh yeah, I also think people here are free to think of a skater as the Devil incarnate or Mother Theresa, or if another skater is a weird-ass tit-suckling loser with no life or an inspiring hero who has neither a single bad side nor can do anything wrong, and say so as much. Of course, this also means I think that people from all along the spectrum are free to agree or disagree with one another. At the end of the day, spades may fancy themselves hearts while calling diamonds clubs but others are also just as free to relieve these spades of their notions and calling them on their flawed judging. Spades are free to reject these annoying reminders and keep thinking themselves hearts, of course, just as others are free to keep reminding them that they are, in fact, not.

R217: Isn't DL the kind of place for all, steamy bitch gossipers, unwelcome gatekeepers and all? Having a differing opinion and sharing it isn't gatekeeping, btw, in case you're lumping what I say here together with other blatant gatekeeping attempts.

Gogolev will make his debut

Ah, we will root for the Indonesian guy not to finish dead last? This one can do a couple of jumps. He's not like the Indian guys who can't do doubles and have all invalid elements.

by Anonymousreply 220August 19, 2018 9:24 AM

R220 Yes, I'll be rooting for him even though I don't remember his name! Read an article recently about the Indonesian skaters (I think there's a younger girl as well), and I feel bad for them, it's not easy for them to even get to a skating rink.

by Anonymousreply 221August 19, 2018 9:31 AM

Asada was looking for someone in Japan. She couldn't leave the country because her mom was very sick. It was kept secret until her mom died, but her team always strongly denied approaching Orser. She's a member of IMG which had some kind of relationship with Orser, and the JSF was trying to send some juniors to TCC. I think Orser may have misunderstood or inflated the truth about coaching Mao to pressure Yuna. He doesn't strike me as the type to lie, though. Compared to many of the other coaches like Raf, Eteri, Kori, Morozov, Carroll, I think Orser is pretty level-headed even if I don't agree with everything he says.

R228 I think this is the second time she disappeared. Last time, she disappeared after I responded to her post about regional and club affiliations in Japan. I actually defended her when someone else called them a Dai troll, which is funny because she later accused me of being a misguided shit-stirrer.

by Anonymousreply 222August 19, 2018 9:31 AM

Good points, R218 and R219. I over-reacted. I'll try to chill.

by Anonymousreply 223August 19, 2018 9:31 AM

R222 That person lost credibility with me when they admitted that their Japanese wasn't that great and had to cross check with friends and some random tumblr blog for translations.

by Anonymousreply 224August 19, 2018 9:38 AM

R222 Interesting, I never put much stock in the Yuna/Mao rumors, but it seems there might be something there. Why was Orser putting pressure on Yuna? Was this before or after he sat down with her mom and was told they wouldn't be working with him any longer?

by Anonymousreply 225August 19, 2018 9:57 AM

Are Daitroll the pro-Dai or the anti-Dati?

by Anonymousreply 226August 19, 2018 10:22 AM

R218: I'm not sure if I should bother considering you revealed the fact that you make it a point to skip my posts, but since it'll just keep weighing on my mind if I don't I'll just share it anyway.

I think you're doing the right thing in skipping over all my posts if you find them tiresome or for whatever reason you choose you ignore them. It's why I made sure to label all my posts in case people don't care for them but don't care enough to block me (or choose not to for their own reasons).

I also now realized that I that have made a mistake in responding to that one post that somehow led to all this. It was pretty inane and something I would have otherwise ignored in a place like this. Not sure what caused me to, as you said, wig out. Maybe it struck a personal chord in me but still, this is DL. Although I don't think what I said missed the mark but the examples I used may have been a tad too strong for something that, even free as I am to react and say what I want, was spurned from something I should have simply skipped over without thinking too much about it.

Thanks for the wake-up call.

by Anonymousreply 227August 19, 2018 10:24 AM

R226: Whichever they are, I'm thankful to them for providing a concrete example What Not To Do.

by Anonymousreply 228August 19, 2018 10:28 AM

Correction for r227: of* What Not To Do.

by Anonymousreply 229August 19, 2018 10:29 AM

R226 The Daitroll is really more of grammar/punctuation anti because its large sausage troll fingers prevent it from properly using the space bar and apostrophe key etc. I think we call it the Daitroll because that's what gets it riled up the most (at least that's why I do).

by Anonymousreply 230August 19, 2018 10:31 AM

R224 They were either lying or their friend wasn't actually checking anything. There was no way to accidentally miss that omission, even if they didn't know Japanese and used Google translate ( I guess you need to know how to at least read the characters to input the text). If they're not a skating fan, the native friend would probably find it incredibly annoying to constantly have to check the accuracy of some obscure figure skating-related translation for free.

R225 I think it was after he talked with mom but I don't know the timeline or details. Maybe he was trying to show his loyalty to convince her to stay? Yuna said he knew what he did wrong but never explained.

by Anonymousreply 231August 19, 2018 10:42 AM

R227 It's fine. Just keep writing what you want to write. Who cares what other people think, including me. And I exaggerate, I don't skip over all your posts, just some of the ones that praise Hanyu excessively, because I find it a bit much, even as a Hanyu fan. This thread is entertaining because there are all types here - the fangurls, the ass-ficionados, the backcounter 3a enthusiast, the faux Japanese speaker and even the troll, to name a few.

by Anonymousreply 232August 19, 2018 10:47 AM

Honestly I don't know who out of these 3 posters is the most annoying: the Dai troll and his constant gibberish posts, the "-me" attention-whore who feels the need to sign their posts on an anonymous gossip board or the stuck up translator bitch who is convinced only they know Japanese and any other interpretation is always wrong.

by Anonymousreply 233August 19, 2018 11:18 AM

I'm just going to briefly put my 2 cents on Takahashi. Yes I don't care for him. Throwing things and having these temper tantrums (sorry but throwing anything hard can accidentally hit someone) is a big turnoff for me. Can I try and enjoy his skating? Maybe but not likely.

R215. I enjoy reading your posts. Post whatever you want. I have learned from posting not only here but on aol boards is you have to have thick skin and let things roll off your back. There will be some like our pet Daitroll that will call others names instead of having an adult interaction.

by Anonymousreply 250August 19, 2018 5:14 PM

1st observation: he's staying firmly in his box

2nd observation: nice choreo actually, a hydroblade in SP which goes great with music, great exit from 3A

3rd observation: 98 points for a one-quad SP and his name is not Hanyu? So those new GOEs do rise the scoring considerably, the SP records are certainly within reach.

Good luck to Keegan.

by Anonymousreply 251August 19, 2018 5:24 PM

R251 Actually Hanyu always gets criminally underscored comparatively to the others so don't expect the judges to throw the candies at him like they do with everyone else. If I were him I would give them all the middle finger, retire and watch fs die for good. But of course I'm not him and he loves the sport too much to quit even when facing unfairness at every step.

by Anonymousreply 252August 19, 2018 5:45 PM

R251 It's a regional completion. They are always over-scored by default.

But yes, if you don't fall, scores are getting higher if judges give out 4-5 like there is no tomorrow.

Ah, Shin Amano was listed as "Canada" in the panel for that Ontario event.. Has he taken up Canadian citizenship now?

I find Keegan's cheesy, oldfashioned programs to be utterly cringeworthy, but he sure seems to get the fraus' panties wet on GS.

by Anonymousreply 255August 19, 2018 6:00 PM

R252. I agree that Hanyu does get underscored. I think someone said that if he didn't he would be so far ahead. I say let him be far ahead. He should always have gotten the points he deserved. The judging might also be a reason the sport is dying.

Hanyu loves skating. I'm not sure what he would do if he couldn't skate. I think he eats and breathes skating.

by Anonymousreply 256August 19, 2018 6:02 PM

Hanyu's scores are fine, you obsessed loons. The real problem is that overrated skaters like Chen, Uno, and Kolyada are wildly overscored.

by Anonymousreply 257August 19, 2018 6:04 PM

R255 I'm a frau and I could not even make it to the end of Keegan's program. Do you live to stereotype those who post here?

I did make it to the end of Gabby's and I agree with all the negative comments she got on YouTube. The music is appalling and she can't even keep her spins centered.

by Anonymousreply 258August 19, 2018 6:06 PM

R256 Didn't they start lowballing Hanyu (or overscoring his competition) after his GP win in 2015? I think that's when everyone was saying he was unbeatable.

by Anonymousreply 259August 19, 2018 6:10 PM

R258 only speaking for myself here, but I throw out Frau as more of a term describing taste and certain ways of thinking and interacting than a gender thing. In fact, in the traditional sense of the word, I get the inkling I'm one of the very few non-fraus on this thread. It just has a different tone from the other FS thread on DL. As someone pointed out, far fewer comments like "I'd fuck x in the ass" and more, "omg, what perfect skin." So balance things out, yes, I would fuck Hanyu in the ass, especially the Hanyu presenting at 2017 Rostelecom.

by Anonymousreply 260August 19, 2018 6:19 PM

r249 Looks good, I approve.

Screw the norms, be fabulous, do what you feel like.

by Anonymousreply 261August 19, 2018 6:21 PM

R258 This is DL, of course we stereotype here, especially frau-like grandstanding about judging people based on stereotypes.

by Anonymousreply 262August 19, 2018 6:40 PM

I hope USFSA troll everybody and send Lorrie Parker to judge one of the GPs with Hanyu. Just to see the reaction

by Anonymousreply 263August 19, 2018 6:45 PM

R257 if everyone else but him get overscored and have their blatant flaws ignored then yes he is indeed underscored in comparison. That's what comparatively means. He has to do triple the effort to get the GOEs which are thrown at others for doing literally nothing. Not to mention that he also gets lowballed in PCs when he goes for programs like Hope and Legacy. Why do you think he played safe and went for Seimei and Chopin at the Olympics: because he knew those are programs that homophobic narrow minded judging prats wouldn't underscore. I hate the argument that they are doing that to make the sport more exciting. If anything it throws people off. Let him dominate like Federer, Nadal, Ronaldo or Messi. I fail to see the issue with having the best always winning.

by Anonymousreply 264August 19, 2018 6:48 PM

R259 Yeah, they started boosting others' scores after GPF 2015. Started with Fernandez at Worlds 2016.

by Anonymousreply 265August 19, 2018 6:55 PM
because he knew those are programs that homophobic narrow minded judging prats wouldn't underscor

Are the judges really homophobic?

Some of them are gays (like the Spanish one who managed to score Fernandez in first place in SP at Olympics. Rumours on FSU he is among those who got a warning by ISU)

by Anonymousreply 266August 19, 2018 7:09 PM

R249 I'm not an especial Machida fan but I admire his commitment to a capital-L Look. He truly lives for the aesthetic.

by Anonymousreply 267August 19, 2018 7:27 PM

I don't mean homophobic as in they hate gay people (although some of them sure do: hello, skate Canada) but most of them cannot handle programs who stray away from what is expected from a man (manly costume, manly expressions) or a woman (graceful, feminine). Men like Weir ot Hanyu make them uncomfortable because men shouldn't dress in deep v-necks with feathers and pearls or interpret both Juliet and Romeo or do the Biellmann spin. It's not just judges who still have this mindset, a lot of tv commenters and isu folks think like that as well. I remember Kurt Browning laughing at Hanyu's exhibition costume in Boston.

r206 Vincent's hair looks awful. Makes him look even more downsy.

r226 Neither. He's anti-Hanyu. Someone surmised that he's a foreigner based on the incoherent language in his posts and thought he was a Dai fan and everyone else ran with it. I'm pretty sure he's actually ferret face from the old threads - the one that aggressively bitched when Hanyu came up then started complaining about women bribing judges at local competitions with baked goods. I think he's N. American and the bad English is just because he's that dumb.

r249 I thought Machida was ugly at 2014 worlds but he looks really pretty there. Good to see that his skin finally cleared up or he's that good at make-up.

r257 I don't think Uno and Kolyada are generally overscored. They have really good skating skills. Kolyada has beautiful quality elements. Uno's only weakness is the quality of his jumps and he usually gets lower GOE's for them. It's just Chen getting 9+ PCS for his sexy ballet arms while doing crossovers that's ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 274August 19, 2018 8:15 PM

R268. What? Kurt Browning made fun of Hanyu's costume? That costume was so beautiful! I do agree that the judges do not care for costumes that are on the feminine side for men. They then have the power to underscore ones wearing those costumes which is bs. It made me upset to see Hanyu's Hope and Legacy at worlds 2017 and see how much he put into that program to only be imo underscored.

by Anonymousreply 275August 19, 2018 8:27 PM

R271. I agree they are anti Hanyu. And hate his fans. They remind me of the aol trolls saying you're the same person using the same isp. Not sure where they are from. I was thinking an Asian country only because of being anti Hanyu. But maybe north America as a Nathan Chen fan.

r276 There are plenty of N. Americans that are anti-Hanyu. a lot of Chan Stans are still bitter over Sochi. I think DaiTroll just doesn't like Hanyu and is bitter that there's more conversation about him than the rest of the skaters. Splitting the threads backfired on the Hanyu haters - most of the skating talk is here but now that the Hanyu conversation is unfettered, there's even more that they have to wade through to get to the non-Hanyu talk

r277 Interesting. Not sure what it means since it's a regional competition and it's so early in the season. Judges are being disappointingly generous with the scoring. do you know how many judge internationally? Looks like Keegan had a pretty bad skate while Nam had a good one but maybe Keegan won't be Canada's #1 after all

by Anonymousreply 279August 19, 2018 8:49 PM

Messing was a mess. 2 under-rotated quads with fall + no combos + 2 single jumps. TES didn't even reach 60

by Anonymousreply 280August 19, 2018 8:50 PM

Only 1 fall for Messing but the other UR quad was so crap anyway that it got all -4/-5

PCS were in favour of Messing by 2.5 points over Nguyen but he was 30 points behind in technical score.

R279

Technical panel: 1 out of 3 (Amano). Judges: only 1 international out of 7

by Anonymousreply 281August 19, 2018 8:59 PM

(279) you re delusional... pass the popcorn please...you sound like one of those russian idiots who thought that every yuna fan hate adelina , the same hateful stuff.. you re full of shit and hate , just like those *fans* who showed their faces with Tenn accident

by Anonymousreply 282August 19, 2018 9:01 PM

Whenever a skater has their best season at an older age, I question whether it's a matter of them being a late bloomer or them having a career peak. I wonder the same thing about Osmond.

Did Weaver and Poje say they were skipping the Grand Prix as well? If they and Osmond don't come back for worlds it's looking pretty bad for Canadian figure skating

by Anonymousreply 283August 19, 2018 9:26 PM

R283 Yes, Weaver/Poje are skipping this GP season, said they're returning for Nationals in January. Who do the Canadians have in the pipeline for men's anyway?

by Anonymousreply 284August 19, 2018 9:30 PM

AFAIK, Canadian men is the battle of aging Never-Will-Be's until Gogolev turns senior.

by Anonymousreply 285August 19, 2018 9:36 PM

Nic Nadeau, Conrad Orzel and Roman Sadovsky all need a lot of work, but maybe at least one of them will develop into a decent skater. They're a hell of a lot easier on the eyes than Keenan and Kevin, as well. There is Joseph Phan, but he just seems like a lesser version of Patrick, and I never liked Patrick, so I don't really pay attention to him.

by Anonymousreply 286August 19, 2018 9:39 PM

Weaver/Poje have surprisingly been named in Skate Canada assignmentss for Autumn Classic

Ladies

Larkyn Austman

Alicia Pineault t

Men

Kevin Reynolds

Roman Sadovsky

Bennet Toman

Pair

Kirsten Moore-Towers / Michael Marinaro

Lori-Ann Matte / Thierry Ferland t

Ice Dance

Kaitlyn Weaver / Andrew Poje

Carolane Soucisse / Shane Firus

Molly Lanaghan / Dmitre Razgulajevs

by Anonymousreply 287August 19, 2018 9:41 PM

Weird. What's the point of skipping the Grand Prix if you're going to do all the competitions before and after it?

by Anonymousreply 288August 19, 2018 9:44 PM

r277 what What WHAT. After Nguyen was such a mess at Minto, I thought Messing has got it in a bag. And especially after that 98 pts SP. Surprise surprise, maybe that Canadian crown isn't Messing's by default after all.

r278 Adding the Canadian men to the Autumn Classics already existing line-up makes that event GP level in Men's. And the rest of it looks decent too. Impressive for an event that started in 2014.

by Anonymousreply 289August 19, 2018 9:45 PM

R285 I'm fine with the Canadian curse continuing in perpetuity. Those whinging Canadians are annoying as it is, imagine how insufferable they will be if they ever get a men's OGM. Even if little Stephen Gogolev manages to win, I'm just going to call him OAR.

by Anonymousreply 290August 19, 2018 9:54 PM

r290 His Wikpedia says he was born in Canada though?

by Anonymousreply 291August 19, 2018 9:55 PM

which is the other Challenger in the same week of Autumn Classic? The Ondrej Nepela?

by Anonymousreply 292August 19, 2018 9:58 PM

R292 Yes, it's Nepela

R291 He was born in Canada, but research has shown that the Canadian curse is only passed through also-ran Canadian DNA (unless you're Patrick Chan).

by Anonymousreply 293August 19, 2018 10:02 PM

R279. That pita should go post on the other thread. All it does is wait. Finds a post. And calls names. Quite sad actually.

by Anonymousreply 294August 19, 2018 10:06 PM

R293

in the US International-Lombardia week, I think the field is better in Lombardia for Men and Pairs while better in USA for Ice Dance and Ladies

Without knowing the final entries yet, I guess Autumn Classic will have a stronger field than Nepela in Men (Kolyada may show up at Nepela but that's it) and Ice Dance (given 3/4 of the ice dance world is now trained in Canada). Ladies may be better in Nepela if Russia send some random girls. Pairs, who knows...so few of them are left! At Asian Open they were downgraded from Challenger Series to Internaitonal Comp. At US International they almost had the same experience. Lombardia is safe because they had lots of shitty teams from Euro countries.

by Anonymousreply 295August 19, 2018 10:17 PM

r295 I just looked up the line-up for Lombardia, and indeed it's impressive. We're gonna be busy in September. (lol Pairs)

I looked at the protocols of the GTSA, and 2 things jumped out at me:

1. Nam Nguyen only has a 4S? I thought he had a 4T as well.

2. Messing went for 4Lz. Well. If I had known he was planning that, I wouldn't have thought he had the Canadian crown just because. Another Kolyada?

3. A fall is not an automatic -5? Wtf judges.

by Anonymousreply 296August 19, 2018 10:27 PM

R233 Welcome back. How is your allosexual brother doing?

R234 Kori got into something with TSL over what they said about her with Brown. I don't remember the exact details but they were criticizing her coaching and she sent them angry messages. They’re complete hypocrites, but she should have known better than to engage with them. She seems nice and more level-headed compared to some of the other coaches, but not Orser.

R235 So funny how the crybaby can dish it on youtube but can’t even handle some facebook messages. He made it sound like Kori cornered him in the bathroom and beat him.

R272 This is better than Vincent Zhou’s poetry.

How does Reynolds compare to Nam and Messing?

by Anonymousreply 297August 19, 2018 10:43 PM

r296 A fall isn't supposed to be an automatic -5. If you look at the guidelines, you're supposed to subtract 5 after adding up the positives. In the previous system, it wasn't an automatic -3 either.

by Anonymousreply 298August 19, 2018 10:44 PM

R296

1) yes, he had it last season

3) also in the old system the -3 was not automatic and some scored a fall with -2. It usually happened with Kolyada..... the top was in Milan when a judge gave Kolyada a +2 for a fall. I guess she wanted to give a -2 but she was too dump and pushed the +2 button. But the -2 and +2 are usually at different side of their screen, so who knows how she managed to click on the wrong one

by Anonymousreply 299August 19, 2018 10:46 PM

Ugh, in theory I knew that -3 wasn't automatic but I thought it was the most common practice and only judges who really wanted to manipulate the system didn't give the max negative GOE.

r297 Reynolds has a 4S and a 4T, capable of skating clean but his PCS is below 8 and he has an underrotation problem and gets low GOEs. I don't think he could beat a clean Messing or a clean Nguyen. But then again whether any of them goes clean is a toss up.

by Anonymousreply 300August 19, 2018 11:24 PM

One more observation from the protocols: on the junior level a 2-quad program with low GOE from Orzel was beaten by a cleaner no-quad program. Comparable PCS (tbh that 61 PCS for Orzel seemed generous for that uninspiring sluggish skate with awful music cut).

by Anonymousreply 301August 19, 2018 11:40 PM

Why hasn't Tracy whipped that beautiful Orzel into shape with his skating skills? If I were her, I'd give him special one-on-one lessons, rather late into the evening... And he should get some GOE just for his looks! I mean, if they want the audience to grow, who'd give higher numbers to Messing and Nam? Oy.

Gabby always feels like such wasted potential to me. Why does she always get these stale warhorse programs, why not something young and fresh?

by Anonymousreply 304August 20, 2018 12:37 PM

I am thinking about paying the 6 dollars for the GS forum access. What is this for? Are we getting live streaming of events? Thanks for any help in getting me to understand this.

by Anonymousreply 305August 20, 2018 1:34 PM

R303 Who choreographed her FS ?

by Anonymousreply 306August 20, 2018 1:49 PM
I am thinking about paying the 6 dollars for the GS forum access. What is this for? Are we getting live streaming of events? Thanks for any help in getting me to understand this.

It's for the competition threads. Not live streaming, but people generally will post streaming links in those threads. However, you could also find them through Twitter or Tumblr or somewhere else if you don't want to pay. I'm on the fence...it seems like there will be less people posting on those threads with the paywall, which takes away half the fun. I stupidly gave FSU the money for those forums once and it was not worth it, imo. Between social media and DL, I think it's enough discussion for me. There's also Planet Hanyu, but I don't post there because I'm not an uber & it doesn't feel right.

by Anonymousreply 307August 20, 2018 2:13 PM

r306 All her programs in the previous 2 seasons were choreographed by Lori Nichol, so most likely this one is as well.

by Anonymousreply 308August 20, 2018 4:09 PM

R307. I don't think it's worth the 6 dollars for that. Thanks for replying. I'll stick with here and Twitter. I don't do tumblr. I think if I am not mistaken a link for live stream for the autumn classic even on their website? I'll have to double check.

by Anonymousreply 309August 20, 2018 4:54 PM

I think Shae-Lynn's style would suit Gabby, something powerful and fresh.

by Anonymousreply 310August 20, 2018 5:03 PM

When the hell is media day?! Yeah I'm a fanyu and I just want to know his music. Hanyu has two weeks left and then we are heading into September. Do they give us a heads up on media day?

by Anonymousreply 311August 20, 2018 5:42 PM

R311 Usually no heads up. It just drops.

by Anonymousreply 312August 20, 2018 6:04 PM

R312 ACI will be the new media day. Hanyu will have no fans left because they will all collapse from brain hypoxia for having to hold their breaths for so long.

by Anonymousreply 313August 20, 2018 6:41 PM

I guess I'm a weird Hanyu fan because I don't care what his programs are - or when he announces them. I'd love to see Let's Go Crazy again and, well, maybe Carmen for the long? But I can wait. I even wonder if he'll back out of the season. I'm suspicious about that ankle. That many months of continuing problems and rehab 'after' the Olympics - I mean that's 5 months after the injury, that sounds fishy to me. Couldn't it end up being a chronic problem that isn't going to resolve? I bet he's messed up those ligaments many many times - and surely there must be a limit.

Anyway, I hope he gets through the season - well, I guess I do. So many skating careers just sort of sadly fade away, didn't Mao's? Maybe the ones who go out on a high have the right idea. But I get that it's hard to give up, especially at age 23. Dai was older than that and he's trying a comeback because he ate at him, I guess, well something did. Is skating like politics - all their careers end in tears?

by Anonymousreply 314August 20, 2018 8:31 PM

* oops I meant on the last line: "IT ate at him" -- but maybe it was a Freudian slip and I meant "he [Hanyu] ate at him" lol, and so he had to come back to fix it. Like that's gonna work out egads.

by Anonymousreply 315August 20, 2018 8:34 PM

R304 Lori Nichols only steps up her choreography when she feels the skater is worthy of her best work. Otherwise she just phones it in and recycles past programs. As Gabby appears to be far more interested in her appearance (hair, makeup, nails) than in her actual skating, you can't really fault Lori.

by Anonymousreply 316August 20, 2018 8:43 PM

I'm wondering about those warhorsesnas well. I suppose it's a combination of a lazy choreographer and an uninspired skater who has no concept of their own style. How many young women, when askedn"what music do you like?" or"what character do you want to portray?" will answer "Carmen!" or "Madame Butterfly!" (And in the case of Russian choreographers "I want to to portray an escapee from a mental institution" but that's a different story.)

by Anonymousreply 317August 20, 2018 9:14 PM

r316 Is it that Lori steps up the quality of her choreography for great skaters or that great skaters are able to elevate what they're given? Skaters who are really invested will have their own ideas about their program and embellish what is given to them.

by Anonymousreply 318August 20, 2018 9:21 PM

The look of shock, fear, WTF ??? on Shoma's face when Yuzuru puts his hand on his cheek or neck, out of nowhere? Hmmm.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 319August 20, 2018 9:46 PM

What Lori programs have been good lately? Not rhetorical, I actually don't remember.

by Anonymousreply 320August 20, 2018 9:54 PM

R318 She usually produce better programs for Peng/Jin than Sui/Han even if P/J then just fall at every SBS in sight.

by Anonymousreply 321August 20, 2018 9:55 PM

R319 Yuzuru is a gleeful troll and Shoma seems like an easy victim. For a terrifying second there he probably legit believed Yuzu was about unload a good old-fashioned Japanese love confession on him. ("I love you. Can we date? Thank you.")

by Anonymousreply 322August 20, 2018 10:02 PM

R322 I highly doubt Shoma possesses the requisite social awareness to anticipate any kind of human behavior. He seems barely able to register things the moment they happen. He's probably just thinking, "Hanyu fingers, hmmm, meaaat."

by Anonymousreply 323August 20, 2018 10:14 PM

Shoma is manhandled by nearabout every guy he ever stands near (plus Alina). But that neck caress was pretty brazen imo. Yuzuru loves to replay over and over and over Shoma putting his hand inside Yuzuru's crooked arm - he even looks at him and says, "We do wedding again?" or something like that. Some heavy-duty teasing (flirting?) And I think Shoma really did finally "get it" with the neck thing.

Yuzuru did this weird interview where he was asked what kind of girl he'd like to marry - he said one that wasn't very tall, that needed protecting. So maybe Shoma would be his type?

by Anonymousreply 324August 20, 2018 10:24 PM

Seriously people. Yes, Hanyu is a total cocktease but the only cock he's teasing right now is his own. And mine.

by Anonymousreply 325August 20, 2018 10:32 PM

But has he seen Shoma in that cute little dress and pigtails at The Ice? I mean, what redblooded male could resist that?? Someone on Twitter said Yuzu was missing - maybe he's tracking Shoma down as we speak. I know he's girly but Dai said he was a carnivore and Nobu said he was a dominator - maybe him and Stephane might work out after all (if Deniss would get out of the way). But in the meantime, there's little Shoko.

by Anonymousreply 326August 20, 2018 10:35 PM

R326 why would you wish Shoma's ass on anyone you like? Between the meat farts and the low fiber diet, no one should go near that thing. Not just about cute dresses and pigtails. Won't anyone think of the practicalities??

by Anonymousreply 327August 20, 2018 10:49 PM

You're just jealous - everybody wants a piece of Shoko. They're always grabbing it! The prettiest boy in Nagoya - except for that sizzlin' hot brother of his (Itsuku?). America and its Kardashians have nothing on Japan!

R314. I think about Hanyu's injuries too and wonder if he is healed enough to compete. God I don't want him to kill himself just for his fans. I want him healthy this coming season.

by Anonymousreply 330August 21, 2018 12:36 AM

R319. That's the look of shock! Uno is probably straight and is thinking what on earth did you just do? Hanyu is flirting and from what I see he flirts a lot. C'mon Hanyu you can do better (thinking Lambiel)

by Anonymousreply 331August 21, 2018 2:25 AM

Some quotes from Shoma at a fan meet & greet recently; gotta love this guy, meat farts and all:

MC: "this season, you're using a unique arrangement of the very famous song Stairway to Heaven. what did you think when you heard it?"/Shoma: "I thought it was a song I've never heard before....."

Q: the color of your Colantotte item is blue but you do like the color? /Shoma: "yes.....it's maybe my third favorite..."/Q: then what's your favorite color?/Shoma: "hmm...probably black."/Q: like your suit today!/Shoma: "when I woke up this morning, this was just set out for me"

Shoma closed the meet and greet with fans by saying: "thank you so much to the many many people who gathered in such a short period of time to listen to my boring talk."

Confirmed he likes drinking cassis orange, at home, alone.

by Anonymousreply 334August 21, 2018 12:36 PM

R334. My biggest complaint about Uno is I believe he gets overscored on his jumps. Some jumps that look under rotated to me and the judges pretend they never see it.

Oh mercy - I appreciate the link R336 - and the 'content' was fine, though a bit overly scripted - BUT one of those girls with the EXTREME upspeak makes me want to create a voodoo doll of her and stick pins in it. Honestly I have post traumatic stress disorder just forcing myself to listen to her. She's the WORST. She makes me miss Mariah Nagusu and feel guilty for every saying a word against Jonathan Whatsit on This and That.

The guilty party is: Maryam (@luckyyloopss) -- I'm pretty sure that's right as I listened closely at the end when they sort of introduced themselves.

Never again !!!

by Anonymousreply 338August 21, 2018 4:15 PM

Interesting R337. He must have something going on in Japan or there wouldn't be those Pooh toting followers that spend thousands following him around the globe. I agree with Dick Button and he's beautiful - face and body both. I'm surprised Shoma isn't higher - with Daisuke, he's been out of the sport for a while, and while I think he's kinda sexy looking, he looks so 'rough trade' to me - like a gangster or drug dealer. Maybe he could do roles like that on tv/movies?

by Anonymousreply 339August 21, 2018 4:39 PM

R338 What is their angle? A more high-minded, mature take on FS? Haven't taken a look at this one, but I listened to one podcast (I think transcripts are also available) and it was good (I think it was a with a different set of people than the one in this podcast) but I can see how something like this could turn smug and boring.

FS reporting is odd. It seems most sports journalists ignore it except for the big events and a lot of the gossip/news we get (at least for English speakers) are from people with blogs, twitter accounts and podcasts.

by Anonymousreply 340August 21, 2018 4:43 PM

I've only listened to this one podcast R340 - focused on injuries and other body issues in skating, like the pressure to be skinny/anorexia and what that does to their health. Also the protocol when there's an accident on ice and how long it takes to clear the ice and get medical staff to help -- they focused on Yuzuru's collision with Yan Han and also a pairs skater who got a bad concussion (I don't follow pairs so I can't remember.)

And the Eteri/Danlil methods of training; Orser's; lots about boots/blades; and the ever-present should girls do quads issue, etc. On this one, I don't think I learned much new but I imagine their coverage of tourneys would be good. I think only the baby-talking upspeaker was actually a skater though? But the others women had nice voices so I'd take them any day. Maybe I'll read the transcript if I do return to this - esp if Maryam is listed.

by Anonymousreply 341August 21, 2018 4:51 PM

Normally this wouldn't be news or even interesting - but since Med and Jason arrived, then the Chinese fed contract, I've been wondering if Brian was sort of thining of pushing Yuzuru out of the nest, so this piqued my interest (also interesting that Med and her mother did an interview, for the Russian press I think):

"Zhenia's mom says Brian and David Wilson will attend Rus Test skates for zhenia -- but Brian will go to Japanese Nats with Yuzuru"

But aren't Nationals at the end of the season? More to the point now is who is going to Yuzuru's GP's -- Yuzuru is at Finland alone, while just the week before, all four of Med/Cha/Jason/Gabby are at Skate Canada. Then Yuzu's the only TCC skater at Rostelecom as well, yet the week after, Jason/Boyang/Med in France.

Well, Boyang is at Finland but does he factor in with Orser anyway? The Chinese connection is so weird and confusing.

I'll be pissed if they shortchange him because he's been a mega star for Orser. And after what happened at NHK.... But anyway, the Nats thing sounds good.

by Anonymousreply 342August 21, 2018 5:38 PM

R342 Oh dear, you shouldn't fret over Hanyu so much, he will be just fine. My question is, does this mean Brian's not going to Russian Nats with Med? Russian Nats aren't at the same time as JPN Nats, so I'm confused why they mentioned Hanyu at all unless it means Brian's not going to Russian Nats with Med. I think that would be big news. I'm no fan of Med, but that's cold if Brian's not going with her given the likelihood of high Eteri drama.

by Anonymousreply 343August 21, 2018 5:51 PM

R342

Nationals are at the end of the year but in the middle of the season (Worlds 2019 is the end of the season....well, it's actually the World Team crap that ends the 2018-19 season)

by Anonymousreply 344August 21, 2018 5:52 PM

I was wrong - Russian Nats are at the same time as JPN Nats. Interesting! Poor Tracy!

by Anonymousreply 345August 21, 2018 5:56 PM

R343 yes, last season Japanese and Russian nationals were held on the same week. I guess that's why Med's mother mentions Orser going to Japan, meaning he is not going to Russian Nats

by Anonymousreply 346August 21, 2018 5:57 PM

Well, Evgenia is smiling in the photo that I assume is from the interview - she must realize that Yuzuru Nationals are just about as difficult, if not moreso, than her own, and he has earned the right to have first dibs, at least some of the time. Maybe I'm wrong in thinking he's closer to Tracy and Ghislain than he is to Orser? I would imagine Med hasn't had time to care 'that' much about which one goes with her, as long as one of the big gun coaches at TCC goes with her.

by Anonymousreply 347August 21, 2018 5:59 PM

R347 Med came to TCC for Orser, not Tracy or Ghislain. Brian is the big gun coach and I think having him there at Russian Nats when she's going head to head with the people she just made a dramatic break from probably was important to her, but I guess there were other considerations. I wonder how they decide these things, do they draw straws?

by Anonymousreply 348August 21, 2018 6:06 PM

This may have come up when she went to Orser in the first place, back in April or whatever. She wiped her social media of Yuzuru photos, so that subject must have been broached, at least. If she understood from the get-go that Yuzuru might get preference, at least sometimes, then it wouldn't be as big a deal.

by Anonymousreply 349August 21, 2018 6:09 PM

The only skater Yuzu should ever have to compete with for Brian's attention is Javi. Javi did come to Brian first and, as we all know, he is Brian's surrogate son.

But other than Javi, why should any other skater get preference over Yuzu? (This would also be the case for Raf and Nathan.)

by Anonymousreply 350August 21, 2018 6:12 PM

Brian is a professional with a business to run and has signed on to coach other skaters besides Hanyu. This isn't a seniority system where more senior skaters automatically get preference over others based on how long they've been with Brian, regardless of need and circumstances. I'm sure the way it shakes out, Brian does have to pay a lot more attention to Hanyu because of his status, fame etc. but based on what some of you are saying, Brian should be accompanying Gogolev to all the JGPs instead of Russian Nats.

by Anonymousreply 351August 21, 2018 6:38 PM

Brian is not running a widget-making business. The skater-coach relationship is critical to the success of most skaters and coaches need to be very careful about how they handle those relationships. I'm pretty sure Brian learned that lesson after the shit storm he went through with Yuna.

As for Brian choosing to accompany Gogolev to important comps over Med, I could see that happening depending on how dependent Gogolev is on Brian. I really don't follow that kid so I have no idea.

by Anonymousreply 352August 21, 2018 7:28 PM

Oh Jesus people, make up your minds, does Hanyu need Orser's attention or doesn't? A few threads ago, weren't half of you saying that Orser is unnecessary and all he needs is Ghislain for jumps and Tracy for skating skills and emotional support? And now:
The only skater Yuzu should ever have to compete with for Brian's attention is Javi.

Seriously? Orser has duty to all his students, to Med, Gogolev, Cha, just as much as to Hanyu. Hanyu should be getting as much attention from Orser as any of his students, no more, no less. And before some butthurt fan jumps again with "saint Orser" shit, my angle is that I know a lot of teachers personally and know their problems. You know what's the worst kind of teacher? The one who plays favorites and gives more attention and effort to one student over others.

Now, the statement that Orser will be going to Nationals with Hanyu and not Med is interesting. I thought he'd go with Med, to make a statement, and to support her in what is sure to be a tense environment. Frankly, I think that Russian Hats will be more nerve-wracking for Med than any national competition, not only because of Eteri presence (she'll be at international competitions as well, probably), they might meet at GPF) but also because the Russian media will be all over her. Orser's savvyness could be useful, but could potentially ramp up the tension, so I wonder if Orser not going is supposed to be a way of avoiding confrontation and diffusing situation or as a fuck you to Eteri.

Although Russian Hats would be an awesome competition.

by Anonymousreply 354August 21, 2018 8:01 PM

Oh Jesus R353 chill out. You clearly don't understand how coaching works in figure skating. Yes, there is a pecking order. Yes, coaches do spend more time with their elites--if they're lucky enough to have them--then with their other students. That doesn't mean their other students are neglected; it's just that they're not the coach's most intense focus. In the case of TCC, that really doesn't matter because that place is drowning in good coaches.

When Brian described his "typical" day at TCC, he spoke about how he set aside at least an hour a day to work one-on-one with Javi and an hour to work with Yuzu. Which sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

And as for attending important comps, do you really think Brian would not want to attend with Yuzu? Brian has admitted what a head trip it is for him to see everyone watching when Yuzu--his student--is on the ice.

Of course, none of this may matter because we really don't know yet what physical shape Yuzu is in. Maybe he won't even make it to Japanese Nationals.

by Anonymousreply 355August 21, 2018 8:14 PM

Medo made her bed and should lie in it. Also her mom seems to be a professional shitstirrer. Makes me almost appreciate Eteri. Yuzu should get priority because this year's Japanese nats will be the first for him in 3 seasons (he missed the last 2 and got so much shit afterwards for still making the Worlds 2017 and Olympics teams. Although joke's on the antis since he got gold at both competitions). Anyway after such a long time away from competing on home ground he will be under tremendous pressure. Medo's pressure is self inflicted. Like I understand her moving but the whole thing was done childishly (not responding to Eteri for weeks, doing nothing to calm the gossip rumors of her and Hanyu, if anything fuelling them until she had no choice but to delete everything, what she supposedly said about Alina). She will have her dear mom to fight off Eteri if needed I'm sure. Last but not least while Yuzu might be closer emotionally to Ghislain and Tracy he is also a man of deeply set routines plus highly superstitious and having Brian around usually manages to calm him down. We saw what happened last year in NHK where he practised with a fever and got injured. I believe that if Brian had been there, he would have told him not to jump in his state and from what I've seen of their relationship in the past 2 years it has gotten really good and Hanyu does listen to him now.

by Anonymousreply 356August 21, 2018 8:21 PM

R355 No, R353 should not be chilling out. S/he is exactly right. There may be perfectly sound reasons why Brian is attending JPN Nats with Hanyu over going with Med, but going because it would be "a head trip...for him to see everyone watching when Yuzu--his student--is on the ice" is not a sound reason. How immature and delusional is this?

Even setting aside the fact that Brian has an obligation to all of his students, if you just want to argue about the elite skaters, Med is an elite skater whatever you think of her skating, so yes, her needs are on par with Hanyu's. I'm not saying that Brian is wrong in choosing to go with Hanyu over Med, but it shouldn't just be a given, like some of you are arguing.

Hanyu missed the last two nationals and maybe Orser is trying to avoid drama with Eteri that could overshadow Russian nationals? Maybe Medvedeva is closer to one of the other TCC coaches or Wilson and Orser thinks they would provide better emotional support?

The was an interview with Wilson in the Japan Times that took place in June. He talked about all of the skaters he's worked with (especially Yuna and Hanyu) and Orser's coaching methods. He also talked about the Yuna-Orser split.
“The testament to Brian is, how big can a person be that he has not allowed the fact that I continued on with Yuna . . . I really never had any part in the issue,” Wilson stated. “I don’t even know what exactly it was that went wrong between them. To this day I don’t know.
“It was an acute, surprising, confusing situation. I didn’t see it coming. I don’t think Brian did,” Wilson commented. “I spent the first few weeks thinking I could fix it. They would both politely tell me it was none of my business. So there wasn’t much I could do.”

-He's the most notable student of Orser.

-He came to him before any current TCC elite skaters.

-He continues to compete and has big goals ( unlike Fernandez who semi-retired)

It's not like he needs Orser or he cares much who would accompany him to competitions but he has a perfect right to get Orser by his side in ANY competitions no matter what. Don't say something like teacher should spend quality time with each student. Nonsense and delusional.

I even didn't give a shit about who would be with him but saying anyone else needs Orser more and he should go with them instead of going to Japanese Mats-an unimportant competition with Hanyu who is now 2 OGM and manages to do his own thing is just stupid.

by Anonymousreply 360August 21, 2018 9:32 PM

R360 On one hand, you're arguing that Hanyu doesn't need Orser by his side. On the other, you're arguing that Hanyu has the indelible right to have Orser by his side at any competition even if he doesn't need Orser and even if other skaters may need Orser more. That sounds like a completely workable coaching environment for TCC. Why does Orser bother having other students at all?

I'm convinced that Hanyu has so many antis not because of anything he does - even if you don't like his skating, he's a pretty objectionable person who just skates and lives in his cave - but because of some of his batshit crazy fans who think the universe revolves around him and he has an absolute right to everyone's respect, love and devotion. Just because you're a fan of a skater doesn't mean you should lose all sense and objectivity.

by Anonymousreply 361August 21, 2018 10:01 PM

I meant he's an "unobjectionable" person

by Anonymousreply 362August 21, 2018 10:03 PM
I even didn't give a shit about who would be with him but saying anyone else needs Orser more and he should go with them instead of going to Japanese Mats-an unimportant competition with Hanyu who is now 2 OGM and manages to do his own thing is just stupid.

R360 Maybe I shouldn't bother, but I have no idea what you're trying to say here: Hanyu is a 2xOGM who manages to do his own thing BUT No one else needs Orser more; JPN Nats is unimportant BUT no one else needs Orser to go to an unimportant competition more than Hanyu, who manages to do is own thing.

by Anonymousreply 363August 21, 2018 10:13 PM

R361. I totally disagree with you on why Hanyu has so many antis. I believe these antis are jealous of him. They don't have to read anything that Hanyu fans write on social media but they do. That's on them. R356. I agree orser should go with Hanyu. I also think Ghislain should go as well. I think Hanyu and him have a pretty good relationship. I really don't care who goes with Med. She has done so much crazy shit this off season I am not even a fan anymore. And please nobody say she's a teenager. You know how many younger people I follow on Twitter ( some are 18. 19. 20, And 21 that act very mature) she knows better and was looking for attention imho

by Anonymousreply 364August 21, 2018 10:26 PM

R356 How is Med's mom a professional shit-stirrer? Any break with Eteri comes with drama and training internationally is a big deal for a Russian athlete. I think the pressure on Med was going to be intense no matter how she handled the move to Orser (I can't judge; didn't really follow her move to TCC). When it comes down to it, she just wanted to move away from an abusive witch and prolong her career. I'm no Med fan, but I don't see how you can fault her for that.

R364 Do people here just dislike Med for her SNS shenanigans or whatever? Is that why they're bending over backwards to argue that Orser shouldn't care about any other student besides Hanyu? I'm trying to figure out if the logic of these posts revolves around excessive Hanyu love or Med hate, or maybe a combination of both.

by Anonymousreply 365August 21, 2018 10:36 PM

r360 Are you even seeing what you're writing? He doesn't need Orser but he has the right to Orser so Orser should go? Even if Med needs him more? Jesus. "Hanyu has the right, Hanyu should have the most attention, Hanyu should be the priority, etc etc." No, others have equal rights. The world does not revolve around Hanyu.

Just to make somethijng clear, I'm not criticizing Orser's decision to go to Nats with Hanyu. I'm from the camp that thinks that Hanyu actually does need him. Orser knows Hanyu and how he ticks, he can make Hanyu liste, he's the one with the reputation, he's the politicking guy, and if he chose Med, Japanese media would probably eat him alive.

I also agree that Orser's not going to Russian Nats and having a perfectly good excuse (Hanyu) may minimize the media snowstorm in Russia. After all every sound bite he'd give would be twisted, the Eteri vs Orser would be blown up to galactic proportions, every move and gesture would overanalyzed and criticized. If he can't avoid overblown criticism from the Russian side, it's better if he minimizes it.

by Anonymousreply 366August 21, 2018 10:43 PM

r365 Excessive Hanyu love. The excessive Med hate is the byproduct.

by Anonymousreply 367August 21, 2018 10:56 PM

The antis Hanyu has to face at Nationals have been around since 2012 or earlier, long before he had a big fanbase, and have nothing to do with the antis at war with Hanyu fangirls on tumblr. But is it confirmed Orser is not going to Russian nationals? It's also possible that it was already decided that Orser would be going to Japan before Medvedeva joined TCC and that was something Medvedeva agreed to when they negotiated. But I thought he said he was going to Russian nationals in an interview right after he confirmed she was moving.

by Anonymousreply 368August 21, 2018 11:28 PM
I believe these antis are jealous of him. They don't have to read anything that Hanyu fans write on social media but they do. That's on them.

R364 I don't think that's the extent of the hate. Some Hanyu fans have a way of shoving his achievements, skills and charisma in people's faces in a way that is a real turn off for people who might be on the fence or don't have a strong opinion about Hanyu. E.g., it's not enough for him to just be a 2x OGM and record holder, but also the GOAT, who is loved by his coaches and every skater who comes into contact with him, and not just loved, but loved above ALL. I say this as someone who is a huge fan of Hanyu as both a skater and a person. I just think the gloating, immaturity, delusion and lack of awareness on the part of some of his fans does not reflect well on the rest of the fandom and comes with consequences for Hanyu.

by Anonymousreply 369August 21, 2018 11:36 PM

r369 Every significant fandom has those types of fans. And every famous person has someone who doesn't like them. People should just take the haters as a sign of success

by Anonymousreply 370August 22, 2018 12:26 AM

How does Sean Rabbitt get an international assignment? He finished 14th at Nationals last year and has never finished higher than 8th. He's 28 years old, so it's not like he's an up and comer who might benefit from international experience. Does no one else want to go to Nepela?

by Anonymousreply 371August 22, 2018 12:34 AM

R371 Are there any promising up and comers in the American men's field? Maybe it's always this way when there's a generational turnover, but it's not just the Americans, I look around and don't see any younger/junior skaters who look that exciting.

by Anonymousreply 372August 22, 2018 12:51 AM

r371 Why is Sean Rabbitt still competing? Lot of money for a hobby when the family isn't obscenely wealthy. Don't know why he got the assignment. I can't imagine he's blowing anyone with power - who would want to touch that? No wonder US skating is in the toilet when they're wasting resources on skaters like him.

by Anonymousreply 373August 22, 2018 12:55 AM

r372 I think it's a temporary dip in talent. All the promising ones like Cha and Aliev hastened to transfer to seniors before Olympics. I despaired last junior GP season that if such as Krasnozhon are set to win, there's something wrong indeed, but I remember thinking Danielian (silver at Junior Worlds at the age of 14) has great potential, and there's of course Gogolev. It's possible that younger guys will be it.

Does anyone know what happened to Ilia Skirda? He qualified to JGPF 2016, he was 13/14 then. I thought he was one of the future competitors but last season there was nothing from him. He was Eter's student, btw.

by Anonymousreply 374August 22, 2018 1:11 AM

R367. I can't speak for anyone else but I don't hate Evgenia. I think what She did this off season was very ridiculous. Hanyu is a skater like her that skates at tcc. He isn't part of EXO. If he was I can understand a little better.

by Anonymousreply 375August 22, 2018 2:51 AM

R374 I totally remember Ilia Skirda. He was cute as a button and was quite musical even though he was young. He's getting to be tall and leggy. I don't think he got a JGP assignment for the 17-18 season. Maybe he's still growing and his jumps need to stabilize. I don't think he's with Eteri anymore.

Here's his short from the 2018 Moscow Championships

R363 I didn't say Japanese Nats was an unimportant comp for Hanyu. I didn't say he didn't need Orser as much as other skaters. I was criticizing people saying that.

by Anonymousreply 379August 22, 2018 4:41 AM

R377 Ok, thanks for clearing that up. I probably just read the sentence too quickly.

R378 This is the best explanation. LOL.

by Anonymousreply 380August 22, 2018 4:43 AM

R371 I believe to get into the USFSA International Selection Pool they need to get over a certain score in previous season or in one of the summer local competitions. I don't know which is the threshold but when he scored 210 in a California event he wasn't added, then when he scored 223 at Glacier Falls he was. So something between 210 and 223 points.

Given Rippon, Miner, Hochstein are out and only one Junior moved up, there is room to give a Challenge to everyone.

Post-Olympic season open many opportunities. Look at who got GPs....Alexander Johnson will debut in Grand Prix at 28. And he's not even the oldest, the British skater will make his GP debut at 29 in Finnish GP

r369 Ask in December, too many unknowns at the moment. New scoring, Hanyu's injury, Chen's Yale, Kolyada's Lz, Med's coaching, Zagitova's Osgood-Schlatter disease, Japanese girls knocking each other out at Nats, and fuck knows about Pairs. Though maybe Pairs should be the easiest: Sui/Han, Tarasova/Morozov, Morgan/Cipres. Dance, Papadakis/Cizeron are the only safe bet.

by Anonymousreply 384August 22, 2018 6:20 PM

R369. I do agree that some of his fans do go overboard on Hanyu. I don't know but I feel some of them may put tremendous pressure on him when the say things like he will get new records under the new system. He may or may not. He may very well be the GOAT but I also believe Dick Button is also the GOAT. I am a huge Hanyu fan and I personally don't care if he gets another record or even medals. I want him to have an injury free season. Have fun for the first time in competitions and not worry about being perfect. The fans that seem to put lots of pressure on him (hopefully he never reads them) should be ashamed of themselves.

by Anonymousreply 385August 22, 2018 6:32 PM

R385 Yes, the dude's got nothing left to prove. People should let him do whatever the hell he wants for the rest of his career (and life), including retire if his body isn't holding up any longer. Maybe I'm a pessimist, but I wonder if media day is delayed because his injury isn't fully healed. There was some article recently with comments from his trainer that made the injury in Pyeongchang sound grisly, like they were barely holding it together with athletic tape. I only read a translation though so maybe it was a particularly dramatic one.

by Anonymousreply 386August 22, 2018 6:45 PM

I agree with you R386. I feel guilty as a fan, but I'm a bit disappointed that Yuzuru didn't retire and plan to do a lot of ice shows, doing exhibition numbers any way he wants to, hopefully raking in the money, and slowly deciding what he wants to do with the rest of his life. It seems like giving up the 4A and pampering his ankle (and any other injuries) to prolong his pro-ice-show career just seemed like such a beautiful way to end, like Mao. Giving back to his many many fans in Japan, as long as they fill the venues.

OTOH, I've heard the ice conditions there frequently suck, so maybe it's not as much fun as it seems - but he looks so happy, interacting with his skating friends and his audience who loves him so much - compared to practicing so hard, day after day, in what seems to be virtual seclusion in Canada.

But then, it's NONE of my business! I'm just nervous for his future. It's always said to see the skaters do poorly at the end due to injury and overuse - after being fabulous in their prime. Whenever it happens, it's so bittersweet to watch. And losing seems to upset him so much - hopefully if he does lose, to Chen or whoever, it won't eat at him the way he's said taking silver has eaten at him in the past. It's still pretty damned amazing, if he stays on the podium at all, considering everything and how long he's been at the top. And even if he doesn't. Oh I don't know... it's gonna be a long season.

by Anonymousreply 387August 22, 2018 6:58 PM

R386. I'm concerned about his injury only because media day hasn't happened yet. We all know it was a bad injury. Imho I don't think he will ever be 100 percent again.

R387. I have also thought retiring might be best for Hanyu after Olympics. I believe he loves the competition of the sport. Maybe if he didn't compete it would eat at him. I don't know.

by Anonymousreply 388August 22, 2018 7:09 PM

That's a good point, R388, that it might upset him more to quit. And he's so young to stop - just 23. I think it's just that injury and all the mysterious comments about it - like he said the doctors didn't know why it still hurt, etc. I thought that was sort of the definition of arthritis - your joints are inflamed and hurt, and there's no real 'fix', it's just a chronic condition. Most people get it, when they're older anyway - and I bet most people get it who have stressed their joints, especially that right ankle, as much as he has. You hear about football players who can hardly climb stairs anymore when they retire, even when still in their 30s.

He grew like a weed overnight and changed coaches. He is on the entry list for some local competition in Moscow coming up. I liked him much better than Rukhin, who doesn't have a lot of charisma. I also don't think Stephen Gogolev is charismatic at all. Technically great, sure, just meh in the performance department, in my opinion.

by Anonymousreply 402August 23, 2018 2:21 PM

R402. I agree that Gogolev has no charisma. I was expecting a younger version of Hanyu because of some things I heard online. Artistry is in desperate need of work imho. The jumps were good though. I'll give him that.

by Anonymousreply 403August 23, 2018 2:42 PM

Gogolev has time to grow yet, but I think his PCS was a little high even compared to some of the other boys.

It cracks me up that Stephane practically looks the same age as Deniss. There's no way they don't realize how their relationship might look.

oh, the bitchy Italian coach doing all these bitchy eyes rolling while waiting the scores of her crap girl is back. and she is containing herself today. that's the one of the best parts of Junior GP....

by Anonymousreply 407August 23, 2018 3:56 PM

Yeah, I completely agree, R406! Stephane has always pretty much done whatever he wants and it's great that Deniss seems to have a similar attitude. It really is difficult to know if there is more to them than a very close coach/skater relationship, but you are certainly right that they don't seem to care if people think there is.

by Anonymousreply 408August 23, 2018 4:04 PM

R406 they are totally fucking. The question is whether Chris is watching. My scientific estimate is 83 percent watching and directing.

by Anonymousreply 409August 23, 2018 4:05 PM

R405 I object to this relationship based on the fact that Lambiel is hot and Deniss looks special needs. People need to stay in their lane. Of course there's also that awkward student-coach situation but I'm sure Morozov can give Stephane some pointers there

by Anonymousreply 410August 23, 2018 4:12 PM

R407 Ah yes, Marilu Guarnieri, always a delight to watch. You're right, she's fairly restrained here. The commentator is very good - informative, while appropriately positive and encouraging for these young kids. Accent sounds Canadian. Guess nobody is perfect.

by Anonymousreply 411August 23, 2018 4:48 PM

R411 she knows she has this kind of reputation. During Worlds she posted a IG Story with the screenshot of a comment from a skating forum and a caption like "do I look so evil?"

by Anonymousreply 412August 23, 2018 4:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 416August 23, 2018 5:14 PM

Gogolev is obviously a very talented jumper, but I hope they don't ruin him by gifting him PCS candies too easily early in his career. No incentive to work on the weaknesses in your skating if you get freebies and aren't penalized for them. Ask PChiddy.

R416 I don't know but I think she's around 35 given when she competed as novice

by Anonymousreply 418August 23, 2018 6:18 PM

I watched the boys whose names I recognized:

Torgashev- my fav of the group, I feel like he could be my anti-Krasnozhon. If he only cleaned up his jumps and brushed up on transitions. Step sequence great with music.

Gogolev - second fav, great song, skated to the music, I liked how precise he looked. Sure, not the same type of skating as Torgashev or Carillo but still, looked good. Not the step seq though, a senseless series of circles that has nothing to with music style.

Carrillo- gotta love the guy who skates like he's having fun, even if his elements are better not mentioned. That monstrous telegraphing on the 3A... that ended in a fall... But if we could combine Carillo and Gogolev we'd get a superskater.

Sumoto - a bit empty in places but he got me engaged in his performance. Which is hard to do if one chooses Tosca.

Savosin - looks like a large ham in making, wave those hands baby!

Rukhin - the lankiest kid I've seen in a long time, his spins looked between freaky and awesome. But, Eteri-camp choreo style strikes again, wailing music, and way too many steps apropos nothing.

by Anonymousreply 419August 23, 2018 6:31 PM

Girls:

Yuhana Yokoi's my fave, despite the wonky landings, a fall, and being a bit slow. But she's got some mix of Lion King and Japanese music going on and the BEST costume, and she looks like tons of fun. I'm getting Higuchi vibes from her, looks-wise and style-wise, unfortunately not tech-wise.

How are Scherbakova and Young You the same age? One looks 10 the other 17. But loved them both.

Tarusina has a non-Daniil choreographer, and it shows. Her program actually has some character.

by Anonymousreply 420August 23, 2018 6:53 PM

Tarusina is from Buianova's camp

by Anonymousreply 421August 23, 2018 6:59 PM

r421 Ah, thanks! Idk, most Russian girls from Eteri's camp have programs that look cloned from one another. Scherbakova looks like a wonderful, musical skater, she deserves better than this schlock.

by Anonymousreply 422August 23, 2018 7:14 PM

Shcherbakova was a real standout for me. Actually aside from the shitty choreo, both Shcherbakova and Trusova are pretty complete skaters despite their age. Although "the complete package" is Orser's mantra, I don't quite see that from Gogolev just yet. Could be fun if Eteri starts beating him at his own game! LOL

by Anonymousreply 423August 23, 2018 7:26 PM

Kovtun FS will be Carmen

by Anonymousreply 424August 23, 2018 8:19 PM

{R424} it will be a comedy

by Anonymousreply 425August 23, 2018 8:37 PM

Go watch Hanyu's old performances when he was 13-14. He had no charisma then. You all are asking too much of Gogolev. He can gain good speed, has high jumps, stable and fast spins, no bad postures. He's way too good for his age, some of jump's take off have problem though. And don't worry, he will be gifted ridiculous GOEs and PCS soon because he's Canadian and he jumps quads lol.

Yunaha Yukoi : I don't see much potential in her.

Anna Scherbakova: Well, I love her SP. IMO best SP so far. And she has beautiful face.

by Anonymousreply 426August 23, 2018 8:52 PM

r426 90% of charisma is in he eye of the beholder. Every Hanyu fan will tell you that he exudes charisma no matter how bad his performance is, lol, and how everybody else pales in comparison. I'm guessing that all that "Gogolev has no charisma" is because there's so much attention on poor Gogo that they feel it detracts from attention on the almighty Hanyu. Heh, c'est me vie, in the FS fandom.

But to be fair, I watched those vids of 13/14 yo Hanyu and while the choreo was mediocre, he did seem a bit more into it than young Gogo. Gogo's programs are way harder though, in practically every aspect, so it understandably takes all his focus.

Compared to other juniors in Bratislava, I find Gogo less, hmmm, loosened up, and more focused and precise, but not exactly robotic. His PCS might be a bit high, but if Sumoto got the same, then Gogo's are more than fine. PCS is not just "charisma". His interpretation was maybe worse than other's but he was best in terms of choreo, transitions and execution, or whatever they're called now.

by Anonymousreply 427August 23, 2018 10:14 PM

The only decent quality vid of Hanyu at that age that I'm found is below. He exudes certain freedom that I think kids at 13/14 often exhibit when skating, even competitive skating, is still just fun. I think for Gogo, being groomed as the next Canadian great one, skating may not be "just fun" and he doesn't let himself go and focuses hard on execution.

by Anonymousreply 428August 23, 2018 10:31 PM

R427 C'mon, it works the other way too - not every criticism of another skater revolves around Hanyu. I'm one of the ones who thought Gogo wasn't that engaging but it certainly has nothing to do with Hanyu. Gogo's tech is very difficult, so I'm willing to cut him some slack. We can't expect him to have it all at age 13. I don't suppose it's fair either to compare him to Scherbakova and Trusova since women tend to peak much younger than the men. I just think that given what happened to PChiddy (too many freebies, overpromotion), the hype and scrutiny are not good for him - he needs room to fuck up and develop without people expecting him to be the hope of a new generation.

by Anonymousreply 429August 23, 2018 10:37 PM

Charisma aside, it'll be interesting to see onscreen the tech development of a technically talented 13yo with quads (unstable ones in competition iirc) and how his tech will hold up against growing up.

Tomorrow's the real test, the FS. Whenever quarter juniors do FS, it's a real popcorn-worthy mess all around. If Gogo's FS is like his Minto FS, he's by no means a defult winner.

by Anonymousreply 430August 23, 2018 10:51 PM

R427 sounds just like the crazy Canadians who post over at GS--criticize one of their skaters and it MUST be because you see that skater as a threat to Hanyu. That he now has not one but two OGMs must drive them absolutely batshit.

by Anonymousreply 431August 23, 2018 10:54 PM

R429 Hanyu at 13/14 was unpolished but bouncing like a puppy dog and a joy to watch. Gogo seems much more serious and reserved. He actually kind of reminds me of Nathan. He's pretty amazing and at 13 he has plenty of time to grow and feel more at ease competing. Frankly, for Gogo, the concern will be keeping up his tech and making it consistent. I think if he does this, they will find a way to give him the PCS.

by Anonymousreply 432August 23, 2018 10:57 PM

Not sure how old Hanyu is here.12? 13? This is an exhibition but he was exciting even then. He was already showing us he can entertain.

R432. Yes I was also going to say that Gogolev was like looking at Nathan Chen.

r431 Actually, I'm the backcounter 3A fan.

by Anonymousreply 435August 23, 2018 11:17 PM

Backcounter 3A enthusiast! I have so many questions for you. Have you ever revealed your predilections to the good folks on PH or GS? If so, were they...receptive? How are you dealing with the adulation you're receiving on this thread for your very particular interest? Has it taken all joy out of the experience for you? Do we put too much pressure on you to produce the desired results when we post these gifs and videos?

by Anonymousreply 436August 23, 2018 11:41 PM

r436 Nhk, it's a new thing to me to be so revered, it's a trip that's close to the 3A itself in effect. And yus, these threads feel much more, ah, intimate, with all those pretty gifs. I haven't brought up my predilections at PH because I suspect I wouldn't be the only oone, I'd be one of the fangirls. It'd be weird. Sharing at GS would just feel freaky, like talking about my jerk off habits to my grandma or a elementary school teacher or something, so nope, not doing that. DL is it for me.

R405 The way Lambiel brushed Deniss’ hair out of his eyes was very nice. R419 I agree. Torgashev is more graceful and a better performer than some of the seniors. Having ice dancer parents must help with those skills.

Cathy Reed wrote about her brother paying a visit in her latest blog post. She emphasized that Chris is in excellent physical condition and still very very positive despite the many hardships he’s faced. She said he’s been training everyday by himself.

Uno fell hard on his 3A while performing his SP at Prince Ice World. He said he’s fine but fans there said it looked bad. He’s going to have a 10-page interview & photospread in the regular and special November issues of 25ans. There’s a preview of his cover photo by Akinori Ito of aosora photographers. blogs.25ans .jp/from25ans/2018/08/

Takahashi hinted that he will compete for more than 1 year. He said that his training for the two quads has been more difficult and slow than he anticipated, but he’s not nervous or worried this time and plans to enjoy himself.

Fernandez was in a weird Huawei commercial. youtube. com/watch?v=cYfSU6YPXgs

Hanyu’s performance with Disney for the NTV 24-hour charity show will be broadcast this weekend. Orser should be back after JPG. Maybe media day next week?

Strangest news of the day, Hanyu’s childhood rival Ryuju Hino has joined Yoshimoto, Japan’s largest talent agency for comedians. Is Hino funny? He’s the last skater I’d expect to do stand-up comedy.

R441 Since you're the errr, how did the other Japanese poster put it...very exacting...Japanese speaker, what is your take on Hanyu's controversial speech at Ciontu? Was it alarming, no big deal or ambiguous?

by Anonymousreply 442August 24, 2018 8:03 AM
Orser should be back after JPG.

I don't know where he is but Orser wasn't in the K&C with Gogo yesterday.

by Anonymousreply 443August 24, 2018 8:45 AM

R442 That other poster is not Japanese. They claim they're a non-Japanese Asian and say they lived in Japan for a long time and speak Japanese, but I'm certain they haven't spent much time in Japan if at all given their past comments and disappearing act when asked to explain. They always come back under a new account.

It was alarming. He talked about the tabloids and anti-fans, so it wasn't ambiguous.

R443 You're right. I forgot Barkell was sitting with him instead. But Orser must have left China by now.

by Anonymousreply 444August 24, 2018 9:30 AM

I was really surprised that Orser wasn't with Gogo - and I was even more surprised that Evgenia or her mother said that Brian was going to Nationals with Yuzuru. It's NOT because I'm surprised he's going with Yuzu over Zhenya - it's that they're even talking about that now. And the way they said they discussed fitting Jason Brown in. I think coach allotment to comps has been carefully considered, especially with this Chinese fed business. I can imagine some chart somewhere that all the skaters have seen and are ok with. (at least I hope so)

That makes me feel better. Well, if it's true. Someone said Javi has recently been at TCC - so he's still in the mix till Europeans? but probably not on anything close to a fulltime basis.

by Anonymousreply 445August 24, 2018 11:20 AM

I don't think it's surprising that Brian would carefully plan out the season considering all of his obligations. This way he doesn't have media & fans constantly questioning him, the skaters know the score, and he doesn't have to spend time dwelling on it or rearranging his schedule. Being organized is kind of crucial for a top level coach.

by Anonymousreply 446August 24, 2018 12:00 PM
I can imagine some chart somewhere that all the skaters have seen and are ok with. (at least I hope so)

it is how it works at Gadbois for Ice Dance where the weekly schedule is on paper and every couple get not just their schedule, everybody’s schedule. So there can't be recriminations like "you are working more with them than me"

In the past, some big ice dance schools have the problem of managing more top athletes at the same time and rifts exploded on who was working more with whom (for ex Virtue/Moir not being happy with Zueva and Davis/White)

by Anonymousreply 447August 24, 2018 12:15 PM

Yeah it does make sense - I just never thought about it before. Knowing which coaches are going with which athletes to which competitions also would make the training easier to plot out prior to the comps. I wish they'd said which coach would go with Med to her nationals - I assume Tracy but I guess it could be the one who was with Gogo, as he works with Gabby too.

Oh well, nothing to do but wait for the season to play out but I'm so antsy -- does Jason have a main coach and who is it? How often will Brian go to China - will Tracy always go with him? Will Ghislain go to any comps? (oh I hope he's still with TCC but I've been worried since I saw a rumor that he would stay in Japan - maybe they just meant temporarily to work with somebody in particular) So many questions?

And will Yuzuru do Carmen this year, to show Gabby how it's done? Kovtun is doing it! It's a shame he didn't get any GP's but he said he didn't expect to. He's had such bad luck, going back to the Russian fed sending Plushy to Sochi instead of him when I think he'd won Nats that year.

by Anonymousreply 448August 24, 2018 12:20 PM

Kovtun is to blame for most of what has happened to him. He says himself that he was lazy and immature. The Russian Fed held him up plenty of times...no sympathy from me.

by Anonymousreply 449August 24, 2018 12:24 PM

Oh I didn't know the background. Ever since the golden era of Yagudin v Plushenko, the Russian men have fallen on hard times. Maybe they're missing that Soviet discipline - though not at Eteri's factory. Speaking of which, Anna Scherbakova was incredible yesterday but my god how skinny? She makes Trusova look plump. Anyway, I thought she blew Gogolev out of the water, when it comes to artistry. He's blocky - and so leggy - I'm not so sure he's going to be the next king of the rink.

by Anonymousreply 450August 24, 2018 12:31 PM

Anna Scherbakova .. yeah, it was so sweet, pretty, nice yesterday blablabla but it is obvious thats her style- she will be the same in every program with slow , pretty music.

by Anonymousreply 451August 24, 2018 1:06 PM

Yeah...I'd rather watch Trusova or Tarakanova because they aren't pigeonholed into that boring pretty princess crap. Anna S. is so frightfully thin that I feel a bit uncomfortable watching her for that reason as well.

2) Sumoto 210.31 (very pleasant to watch, won PCS)

5) Savosin 189.86

6) Duck 188.91

7) Rukhin 187.94

10) Maierhofer 170.48

by Anonymousreply 456August 24, 2018 3:34 PM

His 3A was too high that he didn't manage to land it.

by Anonymousreply 457August 24, 2018 3:37 PM

R453 It says Hanyu lives in an expensive high-rise and an insider at the fed says he's going to practice everyday and staying home at night as usual, and not going out with Medvedeva. The day of the photograph, the car suddenly sped up as he was getting inside (maybe they noticed the paparazzo) and he had to yell at it to stop. His left foot was dragged along but he wasn't hurt.

The tabloid is Josei Seven again. There are big celebrities in Japan with actual scandals going on right now. It's so strange and unusual that they continue to target Hanyu who has no juicy scandal and even follow him in Canada. In the past, they always relied on his antis for material that they could make up themselves. It's like someone at that magazine has a personal grudge against him.

by Anonymousreply 458August 24, 2018 3:41 PM

All I want is for Carillo to stabilize his jumps enough to earn him a Worlds spot every year and be the guy who gets invited to the gala no matter how he places.

1. Carillo. Anyone knows who does his choreo? It's a good choreo. And a sparkly costume. 2. Sumoto. Nice, uncomplicated, smooth. 3. Gogo. At least until he lost his concentration in the 2nd half. Transitions do the interpretation for him, but still looked pretty good. Except the costume. Where's Sherlock Holms in it. 4. Nobody.

Savosin and Grassl were perfectly unmemorable and my yesterday's fav Torgashev was completely swallowed by that monstrously awful music.

by Anonymousreply 459August 24, 2018 3:48 PM

r458 It doesn't sound like a grudge, there's nothing negative in that article. To my western eyes it looks like a simple correlation: Hanyu's popularity = clicks. So what if there's nothing scandalous about him, people will click just to see what colour t-shirt he wears. It's like the riveting photos of celebs doing grocery shopping in western media.

by Anonymousreply 460August 24, 2018 3:55 PM

I'm not R458, but it seems they're following him mostly for harassment purposes, especially coming to a place where he's been largely left alone. They're not just taking pictures of him at TCC, they're making it clear that they've followed him to his home and know where he lives. If they just wanted clicks, they could simply make up more scandalous stories.

by Anonymousreply 461August 24, 2018 4:04 PM

R460 Josei Seven is the tabloid that's accused Hanyu of doping, forcing a girlfriend to get an abortion, being brainwashed, etc. The same tabloid that's sent people to follow and harass his family and friends. It's unusual to hire or send paparazzi overseas to photograph someone, especially if there's no scandal. While Hanyu is famous, an article about him going to practice doesn't generate much interest among the general public or the type of people who buy those magazines.

by Anonymousreply 462August 24, 2018 4:08 PM

r461 But... That's how paparazzi work. They follow celebs, camp enroute to their houses, etc. I'm thinking a clever Toronto pap realized there's a tabloid willing to pay pretty penny for pics of someone living in his city. I just find clickbait more likely than deliberate harassment.

That said, looks the period of normal life (Hanyu normal of course) in Canada is over. Probably better than what would await for him into Japan but still.

by Anonymousreply 463August 24, 2018 4:15 PM

r460 I just don't get why would one particular tabloid go out of their way to harass him unless it does generate clicks.

by Anonymousreply 464August 24, 2018 4:17 PM

Like porn industry, tabloid is something normal in Japan. Almost every Japanese celebrities have to deal with paparazzi and rumors everyday. Yuzuru isn't a celebrity but he's famous and he has a lot of crazy fans who want to know everything about him. Tabloids definitely want to use his name to write clickbait headlines. It's understandable that they follow him everywhere. Sadly, I think he can do nothing but get used to it.

by Anonymousreply 472August 24, 2018 4:34 PM

R464 It doesn't generate clicks outside figure skating fans and Hanyu's crazy fans boycotted that tabloid years ago. There are big Japanese celebrities in places like Los Angeles and New York City where there are even more paparazzi to hire and the tabloids don't hire anyone to follow them around. Their reach and budget is not as extensive as tabloids in America or Europe.

by Anonymousreply 473August 24, 2018 4:38 PM

Gogolev is undoubtedly Canadian figure skating's savior after Chan retired. He has a good shot to win a medal next Olympics.

by Anonymousreply 474August 24, 2018 4:41 PM

Gotta shake my head as a Westerner, the idea of a hermit figure skater being hounded by paparazzi like the once future Queen of England. As Westerners, we see this all the time and expect celebs to brush it off, but I guess what R473 is saying is that this is highly unusual for Japanese tabloids. I mean, we don't see pap shots of Shohei getting in and out of cars in Anaheim and he's in a much bigger sport and is just as private, so I would imagine stories about him would generate more interest and clicks.

by Anonymousreply 475August 24, 2018 4:44 PM

I understand that being stalked could cause all sorts of trauma - but this particular story doesn't come after him, in the "National Enquirer" kind of way that it could -- they could have made up some garbage about him and Evgenia, but they just said that he DOESN'T date her and continues his all-work no-play lifestyle. They could have conjectured all sorts of garbage after she appears to have followed him to Toronto -- well, I know she probably didn't, but after all the fangirling in the past, it could easily be taken that way... Anyway, it's like they're passing up the chance to really stir up the dirt.

I guess I keep going back to wondering why he didn't retire. Sure, the harassment would continue a little longer - but in time, it would lessen and go away completely, if he wasn't competing any more. Daisuke and Shoma and Kazuki and the rising Japanese female skaters - surely they'd get more attention than him, if he was doing a few weeks of ice shows and then working quietly as a coach or choreographer or whatever it is he wants to do.... Oh well, I'm being too presumptious.

BTW, I was kind of shocked to see that Adam Rippon has choreographed Mariah Bell's SP to "Love You More" by Celine Dion. Don't know why -- I guess because I've been following him on Instagram, doing his tv shows etc., and hadn't seen it mentioned anywhere.

R478 Why should he let a supermarket tabloid dictate what he wants to do with his career?

by Anonymousreply 478August 24, 2018 4:49 PM

Because he's said that this sort of thing has made him "want to die" - and he said that as recently as this past spring.

by Anonymousreply 479August 24, 2018 4:50 PM

R475 Well, not sure Shohei's fans care about his private life as much as Hanyu fans do.

by Anonymousreply 480August 24, 2018 4:54 PM

R479 Yes, I'm aware he said that, but he loves skating and it's the most important thing in his life, so I would hope that he doesn't let a supermarket tabloid influence such an important life decision.

R480 - well, R473 is saying that ONE tabloid is hounding Hanyu and their tabloid stories are not getting interest from Hanyu's fans: "It doesn't generate clicks outside figure skating fans and Hanyu's crazy fans boycotted that tabloid years ago." So if they're not getting clicks or interest, and but still sending paps to another country to harass a celeb with no current scandals, then maybe they're doing it for other reasons.

by Anonymousreply 481August 24, 2018 5:07 PM

R476 It's more about who is producing the article. The same people who stalked and traumatized his classmate, harassed his physical therapist. R480 Ohtani is a much bigger deal in Japan and the US, far more famous internationally, too. There's far more interest in his private life than Hanyu's.

by Anonymousreply 482August 24, 2018 5:13 PM

Seriously, only a die-hard FS fan would think people are more interested in Hanyu than Shohei.

by Anonymousreply 483August 24, 2018 5:18 PM

R479. Yes. I think most of us are aware what these antis and tabloids did to Hanyu. Hurting him so much that he wanted to die. Imo skating is part of his life and I can't see him happy if he isn't competing. These people need to lay off. Hanyu is so private and wants to keep his life private. I would like the know what is their goal? He has no scandals.

by Anonymousreply 484August 24, 2018 5:30 PM

R444 I think the ambiguity was whether he said he's tried to die or it made him want to die. Which do you think it was? Given these new tabloidy stories, I wonder if he said it to try to deter the continuing harassment. Or maybe it's just something he blurted out.

by Anonymousreply 487August 24, 2018 5:54 PM

R485. I'm not R444 but a translator on Twitter translated Hanyu as saying he tried to die many times. I took that as he tried to kill himself more than once. So this concerns me and I hope he is strong enough because whoever is doing this probably will continue. Maybe the goal is to upset him before the season begins. But then why? What would be the reason?

by Anonymousreply 488August 24, 2018 5:56 PM

And Caroline Kostner has no plan of retiring.

by Anonymousreply 489August 24, 2018 6:04 PM

R488 I think know who you're talking about, but that translator received significant push back, so I'd just like to know whether this is a case of some Hanyu fans burying their heads in the sand and not wanting to entertain any unpleasant details about his life or if there is just genuine ambiguity regarding what he actually said.

by Anonymousreply 490August 24, 2018 6:41 PM

If we got a penny for every time we felt so down because of hateful world that it made us want to die, we'd be millionaires. And yet we're still alive. Well, most of us, anyway.

And why is everybody so convinced the Japanese tabloid has to resort to sending paps to Canada? Canadian paps can't be hired to take a photo or two?

by Anonymousreply 491August 24, 2018 8:14 PM

R491 Sure, it's natural for everyone have negative and dark thoughts every so often. Few have acted on them. That's why there's a big distinction between Hanyu saying "I wanted to die" vs. "I tried to die." Whether the Japanese tabloid sent paps to Canada or hired Canadian paps, I think the issue is that they haven't previously resorted to doing either, even for bigger celebs and athletes, so why Hanyu?

by Anonymousreply 492August 24, 2018 9:11 PM

R492 Have you never heard someone say something like "I was so embarrassed I wanted to die!" Saying that doesn't mean you really want to die or are planning to commit suicide.

by Anonymousreply 493August 24, 2018 9:15 PM

R491. Imo Hanyu was or is suffering from mental illness. Depression is a form of mental illness. We need to take mental illness seriously and not make someone feel they are crazy because that's not always the case.

by Anonymousreply 494August 24, 2018 9:17 PM

R493 Of course, and I'm not disagreeing with you - if that's all he said, I don't think it's that big of a deal. What I'm saying is that some people have interpreted his saying "I tried to die" to mean he tried to commit suicide. That is a different story altogether.

R494 I wouldn't go so far as to diagnose mental illness just because someone feels depressed or sad sometimes. But maybe that's not what you're trying to say.

by Anonymousreply 495August 24, 2018 9:21 PM

R492. I want to know why Hanyu as well. There has to be a reason. And I'm thinking not a good reason.

R495. The person on Twitter said tried to die many times. They also said suicide. If Hanyu was depressed and to the point of trying to take his life several times I would put that as a form of mental illness. Most of us get sad depressed but not to the point of suicide so I would not put that as mental illness.

by Anonymousreply 496August 24, 2018 9:38 PM

R496 A significant number of people have called into question that twitter translator's interpretation of what Hanyu said. Japanese is a complex and nuanced language and there is some disagreement over what he actually said. Was it something minor like "I was so sad about these stories, I just wanted to die" or was it something major like "I was so sad I tried to kill myself." I think even the Japanese speakers disagree on what he actually said. That's why I wondered whether our Japanese speaker could shed some light. Because at this point, we don't know what he actually said/meant. So I wouldn't diagnose mental illness based on one person's interpretation because a number of people have disagreed with that interpretation.

by Anonymousreply 497August 24, 2018 9:54 PM

There's no way Hanyu attempted suicide once, let alone three times. Any suicide attempt comes with health implications, especially for an athlete, not to mention that he would immediately be withdrawn from competition by parents and coaches. And no suicidal person can put themselves together mentally to win the Olympics with no preparation.

"Suicidal Hanyu" is fan fiction of the creepiest kind. Yes, he's a loner, no he's not friendless, and his suicide chat was clearly an off-the-cuff turn of phrase.

by Anonymousreply 498August 24, 2018 10:03 PM

LOL at this fan art

by Anonymousreply 499August 24, 2018 10:14 PM

R498 I tend to agree with this interpretation too. In addition to some of the things you mentioned, he's a very deliberate speaker so it doesn't make sense for him to throw out something as serious as suicide as a casual aside during his ice show. And I'd like to know from our Japanese speaker, was there actual ambiguity in what he was saying or are some people just wrong?

by Anonymousreply 500August 24, 2018 10:16 PM

R499 I think Hanyu has made up his mind on that one.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 501August 24, 2018 10:45 PM

I would also like to hear from our Japanese speaker. I also heard that the audience reacted like in shock when he was speaking about the subject. The person on Twitter says she is a professional translator. She could be off on some things or some fans don't want to hear to hear this sort of thing

I m not sure I want to say his coaches and family would get help. They would if they knew. Not sure how suicide stuff is handled in japan. How it's looked at. I do know I never thought jonghyun would kill himself. He always looked happy. I know he spoke out sometimes about being sad and depressed. Never thought he would take his own life. I guess I am saying someone can be the happiest person in front the camera but nobody knows how things are really.

Ok let's wait for our interpreter.

by Anonymousreply 502August 24, 2018 11:47 PM

I'm quite sure Hanyu's mental health is better than some of the obsessed fanyus on this thread, like R502.

Dude's weird, not mentally ill, for fuck's sake. He wouldn't be winning shit if he was. Can we stop armchair pychoanalysing a guy we know only through a camera lens?

r503 Totally.

And shit, I'm starting to question my mental health too, what am I doing here, my life, my choices. (And yet I know I'll be back for more, lunacy must be contagious.)

by Anonymousreply 505August 25, 2018 2:12 AM

Apologies for straying off-topic and bringing this bloody worn out subject up again, but I'd like to reply to this post from a couple of days ago that was directed at me.

[R196] None of the links you posted are working after removing the spaces. The Nikkei Shinbun ones redirect to their front page and the Sports Hochi Shinbun one doesn't exist at all.

However, I'm familiar with the source of the first quote. It's extracted from the Nikkei seminar held on the date you stated. This is what you cited:
よく長光コーチらとケンカしました。原因は僕の八 - つ当たり。トレーナーには携帯を投げちゃったことも……。トレー - ニングより、心のケアのための時間の方が多かったと思います。” - I often fought with Coach Nagamitsu and the others. I took my anger out on them. I even threw my mobile phone at my trainer…. I think I spent more time on my mental health than training.”

I wonder why you chose to omit more than half of what Takahashi said for that one? That's rather strange for someone, who likes to point this kind of thing out in other people's translations and takes pride in their superior Japanese skills.

You actually made a couple of mistakes in your translation. It wasn't Takahashi, who said "I often fought with coach Nagamitsu and the others." It was the interviewer, who suggested that he did, so it's "[bold]You[/bold] often fought..." And Takahashi's response is way more extensive after he said he took his frustration out on others (meaning his team and mainly Watanabe). That statement is followed by one more sentence. Then there's another prompt by the interviewer. Followed by Takahashi's mention of a/the mobile phone incident and a couple more explications before he concludes with "I think [bold]he[/bold] (meaning once again Watanabe) spent more time on my mental health than my training." And then there's another crucial bit after that before the interview moves on to a different subject.

I'd be interested in your translation of these missing parts.

That said, yes, the "anger episodes" coincided with the two darkest phases in Takahashi's career: the aftermath of the ACL tear and gruelling rehab right before Vancouver and the accumulated grievances he faced from two seasons before Sochi. The first two (incomplete) quotes (I found the second one under this link: nikkei .com/news/print-article/?R_FLG=0&bf=0&ng=DGXZZO14974170Q0A920C1000000&uah=DF120820103446) relate to the same phase from when he went through knee rehab and his subsequent efforts to return to his former condition from late 2008 to 2009.

There are no accounts of such incidents from before late 2008 or inbetween 2010 and mid 2012 (or obviously after 2014) for that matter. Isn't that kinda uncharacteristic for an alleged chronic issue? Apparently Takahashi snapped in the two aforementioned burdensome, high-pressure situations and what ensued isn't to be lauded as he acknowledged himself. However I’d be hesitant to remote diagnose anything a chronic whatever problem on the basis of a couple of accounts that specifically relate to two distinct phases in someone's life. That's armchair psychology indeed.

by Anonymousreply 506August 25, 2018 3:24 AM

Continued from R506:
“Honestly.

I was able to find the aforementioned quote on a personal blog hosted by FC2 with working links to parts 2, 3, 4 and 6 of the talk between Shirota and Nagamitsu it belongs to in megalodon.jp's archive. I can't tell, if that's a reliable source. A blog on FC2 certainly is not.

Regardless, I'm wondering why you chose to include this quote in the discussed context at all though? It doesn't specify any incidents of the aforementioned sort. From Takahashi's often referenced motivational ups and downs to his unsteady mentalitiy with his weak competition nerves and sporadic bouncing back and forth between a somewhat confident mindset and crushing self-doubt Nagamitsu could have meant about anything. All of these points were brought up or implied in one form or another during the talk. The only thing she referred to explicitly in this particular quote was Takahashi's unsteady motivation in comparison to Arakawa.
From the same interview I quoted, his coach said that she spoiled him and would have never gone so easy on him had he been a girl.

Could you point the exact passage out?
But he was never vilified by the press for what he did (Can you imagine any other Japanese or foreign skater being treated the same way today?) and his team never left him while he would have been abandoned by a different coach.

There's no need to vilify people for being human and thus weak and flawed as long as their actions aren't born out of a discernible vicious intent. That would have blown the matter way out of proportion. Would any reputable Japanese news outlet do this now that figure skating and thus figure skaters have reached peak popularity and attention in Japan? I've never lived there, nor do I follow everything that's reported by the Japanese media, so I can't tell. If it happens then that's reflecting badly on them imo, not on the persons they're trying to shame.

I suspect there may be a lot less tolerance for "out of line" behaviour in Japan than in many Western parts of the world and I feel that the definitions of what constitutes such behaviour might vary greatly as well. (From my Western pov, out of what was reported specifically, the only admittedly not exactly stellar thing Takahashi did was to chuck his mobile phone at his trainer on impulse and I would have understood Watanabe quitting for that reason.) Commendably Takahashi’s team stuck with him unsweringly through thick and thin though and gave him stability, preventing him from losing his footing completely when he was troubled and hurting like a supportive team does. Maybe a less empathetic Japanese coach would have shown him the door during one of these dark phases (again, there's no way of knowing since it's a hypothetical situation) or rather treated him differently from the beginning (meaning scolded him for his low self-esteem and pressure resistence) and Takahashi, as Nagamitsu assessed, might have given up on skating altogether in his teens. I believe it was this particular skater-coach combo that made Takahashi’s success possible, because of their mutual trust and understanding. And mind you, reportedly they clashed a lot due to their close mother-son like relationship and because they're apparently both stubborn as mules.

by Anonymousreply 507August 25, 2018 3:27 AM

R506 R507 Jesus Christ. You only come here to erect great walls of text to call for compassion and justify behavior that 1) you're not denying actually happened (but we should look upon kindly because...reasons); 2) nobody gives a shit about anyway because so what if he threw stuff, he's a big ol queen; I would have expected nothing less. I'm actually a big Dai fan, but seeing people like you come out of the GS wingnut fanfest woodwork has turned me into a Dai fan anti. The thing that most offends me about Dai is his nasty hair. Unless you can provide an explanation (with appropriate sources) for why I should feel any sympathy for that crispy orange tipped disaster, then please don't bother. You're only making people hate him and his fans where otherwise they wouldn't have given a shit.

by Anonymousreply 510August 25, 2018 4:41 AM

R498. That isn't exactly true. It can depend when the person gets depressed feelings. Michael Phelps suffered depression as an elite athlete. If I read correctly his darkest moments came during fall or winter.

by Anonymousreply 511August 25, 2018 5:03 AM

I wonder what kind of pain skaters have to live with - just saw a tweet from Jeff Buttle saying he's been in constant pain for 5 months and just had a procedure done on his hips. During that time, he's done at least 3 ice shows that I can think of. Do they just take painkillers all the time? Jeff is 35 years old. Javi who's only 27 has mentioned being in pain. Goodness knows how many surgeries Plushenko has had. I honestly don't know why most skaters bother. Most of them get no money, no fame, no job prospects after their career is over. Just a lifetime of pain and surgeries.

by Anonymousreply 512August 25, 2018 5:24 AM

I will get to Hanyu after this.

R506 I will post all of the links individually for you. Your Nikkei link doesn’t actually work for me, so maybe datalounge altered them when they were posted. You will see that I didn’t omit anything. You will also see that the interviews indicate exactly who is saying what, as in [bold]“Interviewer: …” “Takahashi: …”[/bold] They also state exactly what years they are discussing in those interviews. The Watanabe quote came from an actual Takahashi fan page, but there are screenshots of that interview with the original Japanese subtitles. The video has been removed by Asahi. This will probably be my last series of posts to you.
It wasn't Takahashi, who said "I often fought with coach Nagamitsu and the others." It was the interviewer, who suggested that he did, so it's "You often fought..."

I don’t even know where you got that idea. [bold]司会[/bold] means the interviewer is talking. [bold]高橋[/bold] means Takahashi is talking.
Followed by Takahashi's mention of a/the mobile phone incident and a couple more explications before he concludes with "I think he (meaning once again Watanabe) spent more time on my mental health than my training."
No. He doesn’t say してもらったor していただいた. He doesn’t even use the word “he.” Are you confusingトレーニング “training” with トレーナー “trainer”?
And then there's another crucial bit after that before the interview moves on to a different subject.

Are you sure you can read Japanese? Look at the bottom of the page. That’s the very last sentence. Now click on 5, the next page. It’s back to the interviewer again with an entirely different question about his Olympic results.

r485 Now I feel bad I won’t be able to give you a satisfying answer. He did say 何回も死のうとしました “I tried to die many times” when he was talking about a period in his life when he was particularly troubled by the tabloids. But, he also didn’t say how he did it or how far he went in his suicide attempts, so it’s still kind of ambiguous. At the end, he said he’s in a better place now and felt happy to be alive and grateful to have the support of his skating friends and fans. As for the reaction in Japan, those words were taken seriously and widely reported before Hanyu’s speech was erased from the second broadcast.

He was crying and not speaking casually. To me, it was like he’d been agonizing over whether or not to talk publicly about it and then he blurted it out as he was running out of time before the broadcast was cut, and it was his way of getting revenge on the tabloids and haters by putting them in the spotlight.

I think foreign fans did downplay his words a little (funny, I usually think they exaggerate his mental weaknesses), not just because of the language problem, but because they don’t understand how Hanyu’s been treated or that his treatment has been unusual and extreme, even for a famous athlete in Japan. I think he kept his darkest thoughts to himself until he won his second OGM because he didn’t want to hurt his family and the people who’ve supported him. Many of the people in his hometown who’ve cheered him on over these years lost their families in the tsunami. How could he tell them how down he was when they’ve suffered so much?

But I also sometimes think he is so mentally tough that he thinks he’s weak, if that makes any sense, but doesn’t fully realize that most people would have already crumbled under that kind of pressure. That contradictory combination of mental toughness and suicidal thoughts seems to be common in top Olympians.

Anyway, was this already posted? Klimkin Eagle (Cantilever) into 4T by Trusova.

I have absolutely no problems accepting anything of what's been stated by himself or people around him, but since you're bringing it up yourself: Who does he [italic]explicitly say[/italic] he is? Did he ever confirm to be a "jealous petty brat" in his own words?
This will probably be my last series of posts to you.

That's fine, it was barely a discussion anyway. I brought up a couple of substantiated counterarguments to some of your theories and asked you to elaborate on your claims and personal speculations, which you didn't address. Instead you kept deflecting with armchair psychology, twisting facts, putting words in people's mouth, overlooking facts that were pointed out, calling others "faux Japanese speakers" and throwing unrelated quotes into the mix that can be tweaked enough to push your favoured narratives. Thus you didn't do much to dispel my initial impression that you're not entirely sincere. I'm sure we'll both be sleeping just fine.

jesus christ, you cant get OVER him, right???You hate him but you ve been stalkin him and his interviews for a long time. Isnt that pathetic?

by Anonymousreply 526August 25, 2018 11:40 AM

R525 I'm not the Japanese speaker but:

1)
It was the interviewer, who suggested that he did, so it's "You often fought..." And Takahashi's response is way more extensive after he said he took his frustration out on others (meaning his team and mainly Watanabe)....Then there's another prompt by the interviewer. Followed by Takahashi's mention of a/the mobile phone incident ."

You don't deny that Dai admitted these things, you're only arguing attribution - that is, the interviewer asked some leading questions and Dai didn't contradict him. You seem to think this is somehow dispositive. It is not. Dai still admitted that he took his frustration out on other people and threw a cell phone. None of your endless posts contradict this.

2)
Did he ever confirm to be a "jealous petty brat" in his own words?

Are you seriously suggesting that someone, looking at all of this, can't come to the conclusion that Dai is a "jealous petty brat"? That for such an opinion to be legitimate, Dai himself had to have said it?

Are you so thin-skinned that you don't understand what this poster originally said about Dai is really NOT that big of a deal, that it's okay to be flawed and human? You've admitted that you don't speak Japanese that well and don't understand the subtleties, that you need to cross check your understanding with co-workers and random Tumblr blogs. That is an enormous amount of (wasted) effort to defend your wet dream from a supposed attack that was NO BIG DEAL to begin with. Every single skater, including Hanyu, gets attacked on this board. If you can't handle the criticism or bitchiness then please stick to the fairyland fanfests where you can swoon over your favorites with likeminded people.

by Anonymousreply 527August 25, 2018 12:20 PM

I can't decide who is the creepiest poster here...the obsessed Dai-hater or the one who thinks Yuzuru is suicidal (or is there more than one? eeek)

I dislike a lot of skaters - Shoma, Patrick, etc. I would never spend hours watching their interviews to analyze everything they say. I can't imagine caring that much.

by Anonymousreply 528August 25, 2018 12:58 PM

R528 I was confused at first too, but I think the person who posted the long interviews is actually GS Dai lover.

Do you speak Japanese and have a different take from R517 on what Hanyu said at his show? If not, why be so flip? If this is what he said and what happened, then why is it "creepy" to acknowledge it?

by Anonymousreply 529August 25, 2018 1:15 PM

R517 I don't know what to say about this. It was gutsy for him to be open about it, to not be ashamed to admit that he was in a bad place, and, for the many people who have been in that position before, to make clear that it gets better. I wish they hadn't censored it and that the Western fans hadn't pretended it wasn't serious. It makes it seem like feeling this way is something to be hushed up and ashamed of - if more people talked about their experiences without being judged or labeled, then maybe others in that position can feel less isolated and desperate.

by Anonymousreply 530August 25, 2018 1:32 PM

R529. I also would like to know why it's creepy to talk about it. We as a society need to stop making it seem that anyone that has a mental illness is crazy. I'm glad Hanyu decided to let us know what he was feeling. Many people don't and are ashamed. I'm glad he is doing better.

by Anonymousreply 531August 25, 2018 1:42 PM

I am annoyed that as a Dai fan, my only company around here is: 1) the troll; 2) GoldenSkate granny who posts countless interviews no one but one poster understands or gives a shit about, and 3) some dick who doesn't bother following or understanding the discussion but jumps in every so often to call people creepy and loons (though on a occasion s/he does get it right).

by Anonymousreply 532August 25, 2018 1:53 PM

R532. I'm not a Dai fan and think he has done some things which have already been discussed here. but I don't care if others are his fans. I do wonder how he will do this season. Will he be the oldest in the mens singles?

R533 Considering he just injured himself popping a jump and then immediately tore a leg muscle doing steps, and is now saying that he's further behind schedule than he thought he'd be, my outlook for his season is fairly gloomy from a technical point of view. R532 I'm sorry. I can see how that would suck for you. I stopped following FS just before Dai's rise as a skater and so am not very familiar (yet) with his skating. by Anonymousreply 540August 25, 2018 4:40 PM

R503. How am I an obsessed Hanyu fan? Many times we don't know how someone is really feeling. Do I worry at times? Yes because I am a fan. I don't call that obsessed.

by Anonymousreply 541August 25, 2018 4:44 PM

[R538] "Scherbakova was friggin amazing, holy fuck that girl is good"??? You mean today? Today she was bland like the music. nothing like yesterday..Boring choreo, steps. Yesterday she was better, she actyally interpreted music . But when music is a bore , she has no charisma(yet) to pull it off. And i think Young someone, that korean girl has better jumps , when they re clean of course

by Anonymousreply 542August 25, 2018 4:54 PM

JGP:

Best program overall, Tarusina. She feels fresh, despite not skating as easily as some others. Somehow she managed not to get swallowed up by that huge music.

Best costume and second best program: Yuhna Yokoi. The moment I saw the costume I knew she'd be doing Phantom. And that was an actually a very enjoyable Phantom.

by Anonymousreply 543August 25, 2018 4:59 PM

from 5.48...Guarnieri and all her not so hidden disdain for the poor Italian girl

by Anonymousreply 544August 25, 2018 5:21 PM

R544 LOL That is both hilarious and sad. She sighs, shakes her head, rolls her eyes, looks annoyed. She only scoots closer to the student and smiles when someone is taking a picture of them and then she scoots away from her again and resumes the eye-rolling when the picture taking is done. hahha.

by Anonymousreply 545August 25, 2018 5:32 PM

No one impressed me today.

Yuhana Yokoi: except jumps ( which were shalky today) nothing impressive, poor posture, bad program, lack of speed.

Anna S. Poor jump technique, lack of power and charisma which her FS required. It simply didn't suit her. And she was overscored.

Anna T. Boring program, small jumps, bad costume.

You Young: empty program, problematic jump technique.

Highlight: Daniil <3 and Tomoe's 3Lutz.

Apparently, Zagitova has the best jumps among Eteri's skaters. Decent lutz and flip take off, not too bad 2A.

by Anonymousreply 546August 25, 2018 5:33 PM

There was also a girl from Hong Kong, Yi Kristy Leung, who had a program to Florence and the Machine, and with a real good choreo and interpretation skills too. Just compare that and You's My Fair Lady, I think I know which style would actually slow down the death of FS in the US. And despite the fact that You had a bore of a program and couldn't manage choreo together with jumps, she's the one with way higher PCS. Must be Raf's name doing it's magic.

by Anonymousreply 547August 25, 2018 5:35 PM

[R546] zagitova - decent lutz? have you seen her take off? She jumps with 2 feet! Whole blade is on the ice.

by Anonymousreply 548August 25, 2018 5:38 PM

R548 So who has a better lutz take off than Zagitova in Eteri's group ?

by Anonymousreply 549August 25, 2018 5:47 PM

R547 aren't both of them coached by Tammy Gambill and Tom Zwhatever?

by Anonymousreply 550August 25, 2018 5:48 PM

[R549] I dont know. But both of them zagitova nad anna s have cheated lutz, its not even a jump. Trusova has the same issue ?

by Anonymousreply 551August 25, 2018 5:56 PM

r550 You're right, I must have mistaken Young You for another Korean skater who went to Raf.

So, the difference in PCS is even less understandable to me. Maybe the judges really dig that schlock, in which case we're screwed. There should have been an obligatory deduction in PCS for skating to Carmen introduced years ago, but no, even Kovtun's jumping on the bandwagon. Or maybe the Korean Fed is doing some push, but from whaatvI heard about the condition of the Korean Fed, it's unlikely.

by Anonymousreply 552August 25, 2018 6:05 PM

Zagitova used to flutz. She somehow managed to change her wrong edge to an acceptable one. At least Trusova and her have a lutz.

by Anonymousreply 553August 25, 2018 6:16 PM

[R553} Yeah, she managed to change her wrong edge...but she helps herself with second leg She should use just toe pick to jump , not the whole blade!!! She just cannot jump an HONEST, CLEAN, PROPER LUTZ.

by Anonymousreply 554August 25, 2018 6:19 PM

R552 Almost all judges put the Korean My Fair Lady marginally higher than Leung, something like 0.25-0.5. But the Canadian man (Judge#1) must have been a big fan of My Fair Lady

Composition: You 7.50 Leung 5.75

Interpretation: You 7.50 Leung 6.25

R527 [italic]Are you seriously suggesting that someone, looking at all of this, can't come to the conclusion that Dai is a "jealous petty brat"? That for such an opinion to be legitimate, Dai himself had to have said it?[/italic]

I had a selection of quotes for that, that I couldn’t get to because of Synesthesia’s lengthy responses and figured she’d get even crazier if I posted them. They’re not as fun as Zhou's or Chan’s, but here’s some:

Interview with Nikkei Shinbun at his talk show (www. nikkei. com/article/DGXZZO38212760S2A120C1000000/?df=3):
司会 2005年の世界選手権は15位。トリノ五輪の日本の出場枠を1つしか獲得できませんでした. Interviewer- “You were 15th at the 2005 World Championships. Japan only qualified for one place for the Torino Olympics.” Takahashi- “I’m sorry for everyone else, but it’s a good thing to me. I like rare things and I suddenly feel like I really want to go now that only one skater can go to the Olympics. (laughs) That had never happened until now.”
After JSF announced they had mistakenly named Oda for the Olympic team over Takahashi.
From his book, [italic]Soul Up[/italic] (p92-93) :
僕は常に自分が一番注目されていたいし、惹きつけておきたい。"I want to charm everyone and I want to get the most attention.”
他の人がほめられていたり、注目を集めていたりするのはおもしろくない。“I don’t like it when other people receive compliments or get attention.”
僕の原動力になっているのは嫉妬ばかり。“Jealousy is my entire motivation.”
プライベートでも僕より背が高いだけでも嫉妬するし、誰かが人の注目を集めていても嫉妬する “Even in my private life, I’ll get jealous of someone for simply being taller than me or whenever anyone else gets attention.”
スケートでも女子ばかりが注目されてクソーッと思うし、 拍手が僕より多い人にも嫉妬する 。“I hate that girls get all of the attention [italic]even[/italic] when it comes to ice skating, and I’m jealous of anyone who gets more applause than me.”

Park KSB Interview with Takahashi (2017-11-17 www. ksb .co.jp/sp/newsweb/detail/8371):
嫉妬は成長の糧だと思います。"I believe jealousy produces growth.”

Did Daniil do Scherbakova’s FS choreography? It didn’t allow her any time to hold a position and breathe. He's hot but has the smile of a serial killer.

by Anonymousreply 556August 25, 2018 6:41 PM

R554 Don't yell at me, troll. I even don't jump lutz. Tell skaters who have no ideal lutz ( well, we got a heck of a lot )

by Anonymousreply 557August 25, 2018 6:49 PM
He's hot but has the smile of a serial killer.

Yes, this. It's the long, uneven teeth, lined side by side with small gaps in between, like little dead bodies.

by Anonymousreply 558August 25, 2018 6:56 PM

[R557} Ideal lutz??? I mean CLEAN lutz - SO with toe pick (not whole blade) and good an OUTSIDE edge. IT IS NOT IDEAL lutz, it is PROPER lutz , TEXTBOOK toe pick JUMP- whats wrong with that? So flips and lutzes cannot be textbook and ideal becaause they re a toepick-assisted jumps ? and no one caanot do it RIGHT? We dont talk about high, rotation, coverage. WE TALK ABOUT THE RULES. So if some skater cannot jump proper lutz, they have to lower the level of rules and judging...If Zagitova and Anna "Szczerbata" are not able to make a jump properly , what about skaters which do? Is it fair to others?

by Anonymousreply 559August 25, 2018 8:21 PM

R559 It's 2018 and you still talk about the rules LOL. How stupid of you not to realise how dumb ISU is. You certainly haven't read any protocols since beginning of season. Nowadays, skaters even have unclear edges on both their flip and lutz, their "flip" and "lutz" could easily get +5GOE. Jugdes could give a jump +4GOE despite of shaky landing. Skaters could underrotate 6/6 jumps yet all of them are uncalled and protocol is still perfecto. Don't ever underestimate how dumb ISU is. Go read protocols and expand your vision, my friend.

by Anonymousreply 560August 25, 2018 8:57 PM

[R557] Anyway if skater uses 2 feet - i mean TWO FULL BLADES. to execute a jump ( ANY jump - toe loop, loop, salchow, flip or lutz) , it is WRONG. IT is not even a jump.So dont tell me i am dump. Beginning of season ? Alina Zagitova during last season , without 5 +/- GOE, had 2 feeted lutz and she won the Olympics. I even dont talk about MEdviedeva because everyone knows the case. If they EVER called her flutz "e" , she would never have got 150+ points for FS. ALL skaters have to be treated equally.

by Anonymousreply 561August 25, 2018 9:05 PM
Nowadays, skaters even have unclear edges on both their flip and lutz, their "flip" and "lutz" could easily get +5GOE.

if unclear edge is called by the technical panel, judges can't theoretically give more than +4. because the deduction is from -1 to -3 to the starting GOE they had in mind. Any bet on who will be the first to "forget" it?

with a UR it's a -2/-3 deduction from the starting GOE...so +3 is the maximum

with a downgraded jump, it's -3 or -4 and the starting GOE can't be higher than +2. So -1 is the maximum. I've already seen a 0 for a combo with a <<....

by Anonymousreply 562August 25, 2018 9:15 PM
Any bet on who will be the first to "forget" it

Easy, Philippe Meriguet, for Shoma Uno. He'll grant +5s for every UR and edge call, +10s for everything else.

by Anonymousreply 563August 25, 2018 9:27 PM

Something like "a full blade assistance " cannot be called by technical panel coz theres no penalty for it according to isu. LOL But they have so called rules , but they dont apply to them. So if a jump is not "<" , is not "e" ,not "!"(called by gods aka technical judges) they can have gotter +5 for their two footed jumps and prerotations.. Eteru s fault- ske knows that all.She teaches all those gilrs to avoid rules.

by Anonymousreply 567August 25, 2018 10:05 PM

Around a decade ago, a male French judge started to date a (male) ice dancer something like 3-4 months after the ice dancer retired.

Maybe Philippe is waiting for Shoma's retirement before asking him out...

by Anonymousreply 568August 25, 2018 10:18 PM

Non! Je me prepare le jambom dans mon pantalon maintenant!

by Anonymousreply 569August 25, 2018 11:09 PM

Well, once we hit the moment will lose the ability to recognize edges and URs, all skaters won't bother and the sport will be fair again.

by Anonymousreply 570August 25, 2018 11:25 PM

So Javi is back in Canada - I'm not sure where Port Carling is and what it has to do with "TeamOrser" but anyway, he's looking thinner and HOT, with Gabby and Joseph Phan. Wonder how much he'll be in Canada this season - I had heard he was coming back.

by Anonymousreply 571August 26, 2018 2:29 AM

R571 It's the charity show that Orser takes part in annually. Beat the Heat, I think it's called.

by Anonymousreply 572August 26, 2018 2:37 AM

Ah thanks! Maybe that's why he didn't go with Gogo to Bratislava but I'm still surprised.

by Anonymousreply 573August 26, 2018 3:46 AM

r573 Isn't Lee Barkel his primary coach though? It's not that terribly surprising, especially that Orser isn't getting any younger and he'll have the whole GP season of travelling.

by Anonymousreply 574August 26, 2018 12:02 PM

Good point. I think everything about this season is going to surprise me - but I only got back to following figure skating during Pyeongchang so it's sorta all new to me. It took me a long time to get over how things went for Johnny Weir lol. I guess I'm mostly recovered... still hate Evan Lysacek though erggggg.

by Anonymousreply 575August 26, 2018 1:31 PM

Valtter Virtanen chosen as the host pick for Finnish GP.

well, they don't have anyone else other than a 31 year old doctor who does figure skating in the afternoon

by Anonymousreply 576August 26, 2018 1:42 PM

And Jun hwan Cha still doesn't have a second GP :(

Somebody skipped over him in the ranking to choose the Austrlian Brendan Kerry. And now this... though I guess they're supposed to pick one of their own countrymen?

Damn you Korea. How could you not be ready for the Cup of China place when you just hosted the damned Olympics?

by Anonymousreply 577August 26, 2018 2:09 PM

r557 If Virtaten got the TBD spot, there is still the matter of Jorik Hendricx's replacement. r576 Has Jorik's spot Bern filled?

by Anonymousreply 578August 26, 2018 2:14 PM

R577 yes, this one was reserved to Finland. And thank God Finland decided to keep only one spot in Men for themselves rather than the 3 allowed. Oh well, filling 3 slots with Finnish men would have been quite a joke.

There is still Jorik's slot to fill in Finland.

by Anonymousreply 579August 26, 2018 2:14 PM

R575. I also stopped watching after Johnny Weir retired. I wonder if Lysacek is jealous of Johnny doing the Olympics. lol. Maybe inside he thinks it should have been him.

by Anonymousreply 580August 26, 2018 2:23 PM

Will Virtanen skate at GP his La Strada FS in his novice style costume?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 581August 26, 2018 2:32 PM

R527 No, the leading question isn't what I was getting at. It's about R556 ironically acting all petty when I posted a quote from "2000 Days", that was missing 3 lines and used that to discredit me and the person I cross-check with. So I was astonished to find she didn't only post a quote that omitted more than half of what was actually said, but didn't even get the who said what right. This happened, because she relied on an incomplete and incorrect transcript of the talk show in question. Btw she just did it again and this time [bold]after[/bold] I linked the subtitled video that contains the complete answer in R520 and in this case the omissions do alter the tone of the reply. Makes me wonder how reliable some of the sources she uses for translations are to begin with.

Does that make me just as petty as her? I guess so. You're right, that I shouldn't have bothered in the first place, so this marks my last comment on the subject.

by Anonymousreply 582August 26, 2018 7:22 PM

Will this be the week Hanyu gives us his programs and music or will he continue to be a little troll?!

by Anonymousreply 583August 26, 2018 8:28 PM

R582 I'll hazard a guess and say that sometimes people don't respond directly to every point you make and every source material you provide because the original point wasn't worth responding to AND nobody else gives a shit. Please go back to swooning over Dai's fresh summer haircut on GS.

R580 Of course Lysacek isn't jealous. If he had Johnny's gig, he'd actually have to work. As Vera's fuckboy, he's only expected to suppress his gag reflex and sense of self worth.

by Anonymousreply 584August 26, 2018 9:14 PM

R582 Thank you, Synesthesia. Now we know for sure that you’ve been lying about your Japanese skills and Japanese friends. My source was The Nikkei itself. One of Japan’s most reputable national newspapers, the paper Takahashi himself writes for, and the paper that organized the seminar and conducted the interview. Even if you can’t read Japanese or didn’t recognize the large 日本経済新聞 banner at the top, the URL should’ve been a giveaway.

All you’ve done is post a doctored translation from a tumblr fan page. Why didn’t you post the original quote? Why don’t you ever include the actual Japanese in your posts? Your translation erased lines of text
between
two sentences and changed the nature of what he said. Why do you think it’s always been the Takahashi-haters who bring up that passage instead of his Japanese fans? After I pointed out the error, you asked the relevancy of a four-year old quote when you were the one who brought up the source itself.

I provided links to the original sources, the original Japanese quotes (so you could easily locate them and check if they had been altered), and translations. All of my sources were direct quotes from Takahashi and his team published in Takahashi’s own books, reputable papers, or from television. You brought the long passages of irrelevant armchair psychology. You don’t even deny that I was right that his terrible mobile-phone throwing tantrums were not a one-time incident but habitual and went on for years, so what is your point? You insult the Japanese and claim we’re narrow-minded for disapproving of hard objects thrown at our heads by adult skaters, and that the people of your western part of the world would be tolerant and compassionate of such behavior. Maybe that’s the problem. You’ve allowed yourself to get hit in the head too many times.

by Anonymousreply 585August 26, 2018 10:21 PM

R585 I think you owe GS Granny a HUGE apology. Unlike you, I actually watched the 50 posts worth of interviews she helpfully provided and I feel total sympathy for Dai now. Here is the relevant portion (which you probably missed). I've provided a translation because I'm not so sure about your Japanese now.

INTERVIEWER: I hear you threw some phones.

DAI: Yes, but there were good reasons for my actions. You see, training and getting my jumps back have been difficult. I thought I'd cheer myself up by going to my fan fest on this place called GoldenSkat. I was hoping to find people talking about my artistry, or my jumps, or even my ass. Instead I found 3 old ladies furiously flicking their beans in unison to the beat of Pale Green Ghosts. It was the most humiliating experience of my life, so I chucked a cell phone at my coach. Do you blame me?

by Anonymousreply 586August 26, 2018 11:20 PM

Dai's cell phone throwing, fear of Hanyu (I think he used the word "terrified"), lashing out at his coach and trainer, and insecurities were all well known and discussed by his fans back in the day when I visited those forums. He's always been a bit of an emotional basketcase (there's also a story about him wandering away from his hospital bed to go on a shopping spree, but I think that just makes him gay, rather than imbalanced). As a Dai fan, I see no need to deny these stories or justify them. He does have another side of him - that is warm, spontaneous, funny and generous. He talks about his insecurities and low-self esteem often in a way that can make him sound bitter and jealous or deeply human and relatable depending on who you ask.

R540 As for his skating, it was so hard being a Dai fan. Unlike Hanyu, he did not always get his shit together when the stakes were high. I learned to just enjoy his beautiful skating and dancing without getting too invested in whether he landed his jumps. I have the same attitude towards his comeback. I hope he finds the happiness he's looking for. I look forward to watching the programs, But in terms of competitiveness, with Dai, you never can tell.

I am annoyed at the Dai uber from distracting our team jpn dirt czar from giving us real dirt. Anyway, I see activity on my twitter about possible news on Hanyu's SP? What's this all about?

by Anonymousreply 587August 27, 2018 2:38 AM

R586 Oh, shit! I'm so sorry. Poor Dai! How could he not throw his phone after seeing that?! (And thanks! Now I'm going to be thinking of three dirty old ladies rubbing it out when we finally get to see Pale Green Ghosts. I can't even look at back counter 3A the same way anymore.)

R587 I haven't seen anything, but an ISU judge played his Olympic SP for a seminar at the All-Japan training camp a couple of days ago, maybe that's what the activity was? If he does do media day, it will most likely be this week since Orser is back and Hanyu's performance on the NTV charity show (I've added a link) finished airing over the weekend. Hanyu was sweating even more than usual during the charity performance and looked kind of sickly but that was filmed a while ago.

I don't have any exciting news but Uno and Lambiel performed Vivaldi's Four Seasons (Winter) together at Friends on Ice. No footage so far to compare it to Lambiel's performance with Deniss. Panenkova's new SP is "Skyfall." FS is " You're not from here. " She wasn't allowed to keep the programs she had with Eteri.

r588 Has it ever happened that a skater was not allowed to keep choreography when moving skating schools? They're all state funded in Russia, the athletes and the coaches/choreographers, right?

by Anonymousreply 589August 27, 2018 11:01 AM

I studied the photo in the lower right corner because I couldn't figure out who it was - and then I saw it was Evgenia, but it doesn't look like her. It looks like she bought a wig and a jacket to try to impersonate Yuzuru, but it didn't go well, so she added the horn rimmed glasses that he's been known to wear. Am I crazy? (or is she?) Not that they're mutually exclusive....

by Anonymousreply 590August 27, 2018 1:16 PM

R590. she is crazy. Not you. When was this taken? I forgot to look at the date of the post.

Maybe media day is something that doesn't exist. (i am joking) hopefully this week we hear something. I am anxious to know his programs.

The collage was posted today, but the photos are from all sorts of times - Brian Orser's as a child and then from the 1980s? The Instagram account belongs to a Russian fan of Evgenia's. If I was an uber fan, I'd know where she was by the background furniture/draperies, but I don't know if that's in Russia or Canada. I guess if she can't have Yuzuru, she can try to BE Yuzuru, lol. Just so weird.... Maybe it was Halloween?

by Anonymousreply 593August 27, 2018 3:03 PM

r590 r591 r593 Actually, in those big glasses she looks more like Yuuri from Yuuri on Ice than Yuzuru. Which would make sense given she's a big fan of the anime.

by Anonymousreply 594August 27, 2018 3:11 PM

R594 I'd agree with you except for the jacket. Looks like Hanyu's jacket. I think it's funny! Girl can't catch a break from you lot.

by Anonymousreply 595August 27, 2018 3:14 PM

But I've seen Yuzuru in a jacket just like that with "LOTTE" on it. Does Yuuri on ice have a jacket like that?

But then, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery - maybe Yuzu should just be flattered that she's trying to be his mini me (with this and the bracelets and all). I don't thnk she'd try to hurt him - what else can you do but laugh it off? There's a professional Yuzuru imitator in Japan who does tv shows and such, and it's all a sort of send-up - the guy is even chubby and not that much of a lookalike but he dresses like him and does the V sign etc.

by Anonymousreply 596August 27, 2018 3:14 PM

R596 I doubt Yuzu himself has a problem with it. I think he's concerned about the deranged fans who have a problem with it.

by Anonymousreply 597August 27, 2018 3:18 PM

R597 Totally agree. He had a sense of humor and this is no big deal.

by Anonymousreply 598August 27, 2018 3:22 PM

I may be dense but I don't understand why the fans would have a problem with Evgenia doing this stuff - they're jealous that she may have some kind of relationship with him ?? So what? They're doing the same thing with the posters and throwing the Pooh bears, etc., en mass.

by Anonymousreply 599August 27, 2018 3:23 PM

r596 It's current team Japan jacket. Maybe she did borrow it from Yuzu for the purpose of the photo, lol. I'm a big fan of the anime myself, so when I saw the photo, my mind immediately ran to Yuuri rather than Yuzu.

I found the photo on her twitter and she tagged it #YuriOnIce

by Anonymousreply 600August 27, 2018 3:27 PM
