Rudy is such an unbelievably ignorant, audacious, hypocritical, demented windbag. I am counting the days for his public humiliation - it can't come fast enough.

You know haven't heard a peep from Jared in a long time. Is he in hiding? Bevis and Butt Head are mysteriously quite too.

The only thing that really bums me out is no matter how complete and undeniable the evidence will be, at the end of the day the Repugs will not Impeach the Orange Cheeto and ignore their legal duty without any way to hold them accountable. Deplorables will re-elect them.
Sigh.

Nah, R8. He’ll get his comeuppance. But why not be a defeatist psychic, like you?
Stop rolling over and baring your neck. Protest, demand, resist, get involved.

Pay attention. I have already said impeachment is off the table.

Why is Rudy being an attorney and spokeswoman for Trump? Shouldn't she be a defendant or at least a witness, perhaps, stemming from 2016 pertaining to his role in collusion and leaks from his buds at the NY FBI office?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 9, 2018 10:36 AM |
So if Trump refuses to be interviewed as Giuliani has indicated, what's the next step for the investigation?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 9, 2018 10:42 AM |
Rudy is having legal trouble of his own. There is definitely a leak investigation about the FBI field office in NYC and Rudy/Trump campaign about Hillary's e-mails. Rudy also has Russian business ties. Read the Chait article in NY Magazine in the last threat to get a flavor for how Putin operates. It's towards the end of the thread maybe the last 20 posts, and you'll find it. I'm not able to link at this time.

r14 Mueller can subpoena Trump to testify before a grand jury. Trump will have a very hard time getting out of that considering that Bill Clinton testified before a grand jury during Ken Starr's investigation.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 9, 2018 12:04 PM |
Bottom line is that I don't think Mueller actually needs Trump to testify to finish that part of the investigation; that's what most of the experts I've heard and read appear to believe.
And as for Rudy's "most corrupt" investigation latest nonsense?
Stop projecting Rudy. The most corrupt thing here is you and the president you are now defending.

R30, today and tomorrow. That's all they will be talking about. I love Jeffrey Toobin. He has been really irritable, snarky to David Gregory. He says that the discussions about whether or not this judicial candidate drove a cab, or whether Gorsuch likes to ski, or which housing project Sotomayer grew up in, are irrelevant. "Who cares? really." He repeatedly snarked Gregory. He said he wanted the Senators to ask, and the nominees to answer questions about case law and rulings and stuff they wrote.
He said Trump made an issue of being Anti abortion during the campaign and repeatedly said he was appointing Anti abortion judges. So why were people talking about it as if it was a mystery? Love him. The real issue IMO is Kavanaugh. He worked for Ken Starr and wrote the dirty parts of the Starr Report, and he wrote papers on how you cannot indict a sitting President, etc. I'd be real worried about him if Trump goes with him.
I don't care about Hardiman or the other two. They're all going to be Conservatives, they're all anti abortion. It's a given. And, as Toobin pointed out all of them will very likely be anti Gay Rights, and Anti Affirmative Action, too. This is the reality we face. So I'm not watching the announcement, and I will not watch the TV coverage and the blathering pundits.
We get those kids out of the cave and then we re-focus on the disgraceful Homeland Security/ICE mess at out borders, forcing babies to be brought into court for immigration hearings, making asylum seekers fill out brand new 32 page forms, holding kids hostage, etc. and plant that flag on Trump's front porch. The only thing I want to say is that the Dems better fight like hell to stop this nominee. They will probably lose the fight but they have to have it. They need to be seen to be taking a stand and fighting. This is an election year. Make your voices heard. Make calls to Congress tell them to FIGHT.

Hopefully the system will start to collapse before midterms and we can regain control of not only the House, but the Senate as well.....then, we can retake the white house in 2020 and with total control can mitigate the damage of the SC by appointing 2 additional SC justices to offset the conservative majority. It can happen.

I have a feeling Jared has been a mole ever since his 2 interviews with Mueller's team.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 9, 2018 3:50 PM |
I don't think there's just one mole. I think various people have given up information on various incidents or other actors or situations. So the mole is a composite of several persons. IMO
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 9, 2018 3:54 PM |
Kellyanne may be a mole, not sure. She is known for spreading rumors. Word is she has frequently argued with Trump. She's an operative of the Mercers, as Bannon once was. So she has that back-up. She has been a figure on the D. C. Cocktail circuit for more than a couple of decades.
Kellyanne has also violated the Hatch Act at least twice. When she was urging TV viewers from the WH lawn to purchase Ivanka's labeled products; that was way out of line.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 9, 2018 4:17 PM |
That makes the most sense r34.
I imagine it as one mole leads to getting the goods on a few more, and so on, like dominoes. Of course there are a others along the way who won't turn, or are still at the bargaining table.

R31 In total agreement with you about Jeffrey Toobin. He and Carl Bernstein are my two favorite talking heads on CNN. Toobin is often very concise, and is very apt and cutting away the bullshit aspects of the investigation and isolating the important points. Bernstein, with his constant references to Watergate and comparisons of the timeline, points out that this investigation is going far swifter and revealing more aspects of corruption than many realize. He's often upbeat and is one of the few who gives me hope that we will come out of this, mostly victorious.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 9, 2018 4:36 PM |
R35 Also believe your theory on Kellyanne might be correct. Maybe she's leaking to her husband and he's the one calling the NYT and Wapo. Otherwise, how could you explain the fact they're still together despite his twitter tirades about Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 9, 2018 4:38 PM |
CNN's Marshall Cohen: Two sources close to Michael Cohen tell @GloriaBorger that Cohen has a clear message for Trump and Giuliani: "the truth is not you or your client's friend."
Sounds to me like Michael Cohen is still trying to get legal fees and a pardon out of Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 9, 2018 4:48 PM |
Trump isn't going to help Cohen. Trump thinks he is so protected he can let both Manafort and Cohen rot in cells. Trump will never believe that any harm will come his way he has told so many lies he can beat them both with the absolute shit that drops out of his moth vs whatever they say against him

Camera-craving Lindsey Graham is on a campaign to pressure red state Democratic Senators to vote for Trump's Supreme Court nominee. He was doing this BEFORE any candidates were name. Lindsey sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee. He has no semblance of even pretending to be open-minded. It is also audacious to be telling Dem Senators from red states how to vote, as if he was anointed the all-knowing title of Master Queen of the Senate?
Did McTurtle appoint him as point person to pressure Democratic Senators? Lindsey, why not, instead, be the point person to save the severely endangered nesting habitats of sea turtles along the coastline of your home state, South Carolina?
The media needs to stop portraying this Senator as principled and ethical maverick. He is not. He is still yapping about Hillary's Emails and has been pressuring the DOJ/FBI?Mueller investigation in behalf of Trump's personal interests. He needs to focus on his old Emails; Putin allegedly has them.
What was told to Lindsey at those golf outings awhile back? Since then, he has been an unrelenting Trump sycophant.

r48 it seems to me that many Republican Senators and Congresscritters are blackmailed by Russia, but what I don't understand is if their districts are so gerrymandered why don't they resist? They'd get elected in any case, so why capitulate to Russia? As if none of their associates knows of their crimes and mob ties and corporate ownership, as if any of the Republican voters would stop voting just because their Christian white male representative was dirty.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 9, 2018 6:23 PM |

R48 Miss Lindsey is like Rand Paul who claim they are against whatever the Repubs are doing but when it comes down to the vote they vote the party line. All of them are liars and hypocrites.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | July 9, 2018 6:27 PM |
R50 Lindsey has been known as a closeted gay in South Carolina since he first ran for the House decades back. An old bf or two are known. Opponents, both Republican primary opponents and some Democratic ones have alluded to it frequently. Lindsey has been quite clever in keeping his "relationships" suppressed. He will go out with a couple of females to restaurants, but will not be seen with one other single guy repeatedly. Male relationships would be 'residence based" and away from the media. South Carolina has had a host of closeted male politicians. Their majority voters don't care as long as they take anti-gay political positions and vote accordingly. Graham now says gay marriage is the law. As recently as the confirmation hearing of former AG Loretta Lynch, he was comparing such marriages on par with beastiality. It is all to cater to his fundamentalists base.

He says that the discussions about whether or not this judicial candidate drove a cab, or whether Gorsuch likes to ski, or which housing project Sotomayer grew up in, are irrelevant. "Who cares? really." He repeatedly snarked Gregory.
And Gregory by pointing out the intellectual dishonesty slammed the door hard on Toobin's snarking face.
“But Jeffrey then you get into a cycle of, you’re going to punish people because of their views — this is why we have presidential elections,” he argued. “If the president wants to appoint somebody who may overturn Roe v. Wade, I meant that’s why we have elections.”
Toobin said he agrees, adding “elections have consequences,” but emphasized again that the confirmation hearings should focus on the decisions that future Justices might theoretically make as it pertains to specific hot issues rather than focusing on their resume, qualifications, or fitness for the job.
Gregory low-key blasted Toobin’s position to close the segment, saying that “this is just another means of politics.”

by Anonymous | reply 60 | July 9, 2018 9:20 PM |
Think about it. Lindsey ran for President, and I honestly think if she could come up with some "crowning achievement" a good exit strategy she'd happily leave the Senate. I don't she's having a good time since her favorite Beau Johnny McCain took sick. Lindsey, I'm sure, feels qualified in a number of areas with Defense being the top choice, but she'd settle for Attorney General, or Secretary of State. Hell she'd settle for being an Ambassador to a major country, like Great Britain or France. Oh, the fun she'd have in France!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 61 | July 9, 2018 9:26 PM |
Lindsey tried an alternative health care bill, but failed.
He wants the immigration bill he developed with some others, to get passed as a big achievement. But Steve Miller talked Trump into being against it. The bill could actually get through the Senate if McTurtle allows it to be introduced. Lindsey's bill is a moderate version between the more extreme versions. Certain South Carolina big business interests favor cheap labor and seasonal workers for farm produce.

Will the nominee be releasing their tax returns? I want to know about any financial entanglements with Russians or with the Trump family or the Trump Organization. Also want to know about any family financial entanglements. Is this person blackmailable by Russia or Trump or both? What exactly are their ties with the Federalist Society, and with Leonard Leo (the guy who put this all-important "List of Acceptable Justices" together. He's a shady guy with a lot of shady billionaires behind him and his various shady organizations. Who exactly will this nominee owe going into the job? Who will they answer to?
And raise the issue of why exactly Anthony Kennedy stepped aside. Was he blackmailed by Trump because of all the sleazy dealings Trump has with his son and Deutsche Bank?
I'm not sure the Democrats can actually stop this, but they need to fight and need to ask hard, impolite, injudicious questions. Treat him or her worse than Clarence Thomas. Treat them as the compromised criminal they probably are and go from there.

Trump Reeks of Fear
Charles M. Blow
July 8, 2018
I can smell Donald Trump’s fear from here. His panic. His anxiety.
And yet, I don’t have a full picture of what is causing it.
The only people who know what has been discovered in the Russian election meddling probe are Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his team, and they aren’t talking.
But President Trump no doubt knows far more about it than the rest of us, and what he knows — or what he fears — appears to be a consuming preoccupation. He tweets about the investigation constantly.
Part of this is an overt play to bend public opinion, to besmirch whatever conclusions the investigation might reach and to ward off any attempt at a possible impeachment.
As The New York Times reported last week about the president and his legal team:
“They have come to believe that, if the Democrats win control of the House in November, the chamber will vote on whether to begin the impeachment process no matter the outcome of Mr. Mueller’s investigation. So they want to sway Americans — and by extension, lawmakers.”
The Times quoted Rudy Giuliani, one of the president’s lawyers, as saying, “Nobody is going to consider impeachment if public opinion has concluded this is an unfair investigation, and that’s why public opinion is so important.”
Politico reported on this strategy in May, writing: “President Donald Trump and his lawyers have made a strategic calculation that their fight against Special Counsel Robert Mueller is more political than it is legal. They’re banking that the lead Russia investigator will follow longstanding Justice Department practice that a sitting president can’t be indicted, and that the only real threat to Trump’s survival is impeachment.”
Politico continued:
“So long as that theory holds, Trump’s plan is to forcefully challenge Mueller in the arena he knows best — not the courtroom but the media, with a public campaign aimed at the special counsel’s credibility, especially among Republican voters and G.O.P. members of Congress.”
...
by Anonymous | reply 75 | July 10, 2018 1:03 AM |
... In May, CNN’s Dana Bash interviewed Giuliani, and she posited that the “Spygate” saga was “an intentional strategy to undermine the investigation, knowing that they, the investigators, the special counsel, it’s their policy not to talk. But you are very free to and are very aggressive about doing so.”
Giuliani responded in part:
“Of course, we have to do it in defending the president. We are defending — to a large extent, remember, Dana, we are defending here, it is for public opinion, because eventually the decision here is going to be impeach, not impeach. Members of Congress, Democrat and Republican, are going to be informed a lot by their constituents. So, our jury is the American — as it should be — is the American people.”
Yes, there is some impeachment fervor on the left, some that party leaders have tried to tamp down, fervor even in advance of Mueller’s findings. But there also appears to be very real impeachment fear in the Trump inner circle.
One has to ask: Why exactly is impeachment front of mind for these people? If they were as innocent as they publicly proclaim, they would know that impeachment would be out of the question as a matter of fact and law. But that is apparently not the case.
Do they believe that Democrats would take the politically disastrous step of moving to impeach Trump even if Mueller fully exonerated him?
I don’t believe so. I believe that Trump is conducting himself as only a guilty man would, one who has a very real and well-founded fear that he is in imminent jeopardy.
...
by Anonymous | reply 76 | July 10, 2018 1:04 AM |
... He is girding for the fight.
In May, Trump added Emmet T. Flood, a lawyer who represented Bill Clinton during his impeachment, to his legal team.
And in May 2017, CNN reported: “White House lawyers have begun researching impeachment procedures in an effort to prepare for what officials still believe is a distant possibility that President Donald Trump could have to fend off attempts to remove him from office, two people briefed on the discussions tell CNN.”
Impeachment is always on Trump’s mind, and so he relentlessly pursues his strategy of creating a climate of incredulity to ward it off.
Just on Saturday, he tweeted: “Public opinion has turned strongly against the Rigged Witch Hunt and the ‘Special’ Counsel because the public understands that there was no Collusion with Russia (so ridiculous), that the two FBI lovers were a fraud against our Nation & that the only Collusion was with the Dems!”
But that strategy of discrediting the investigation seems to be working almost exclusively among Trump’s base. As CNN reported in May about “a slight negative shift overall” in public approval of Mueller’s handling of the investigation:
“Just about all of that change has come from Republicans, who now give Mueller a 17 percent approval rating, down from 29 percent in March. Among Democrats and independents, approval ratings for Mueller have not changed significantly.”
Trump has done and said many heinous things as president and before, but it is highly unlikely that any would be solid ground for a successful impeachment. However, damning findings from Mueller would create that solid ground.
Yet Trump contends that there’s no there there. If not, why is he acting like there is?

For us anti-Trumpers this is NOT good news.

[Quote] This election cannot be about impeachment. I don’t think it’s in the interest of America’s working families to focus on that, unless we have more to go on, which we don’t at this time. You get the power of subpoena, you don’t know where it takes you. I wouldn’t not impeach the president for political reasons. But I wouldn’t impeach him for political reasons, either. That’s just not what it’s supposed to be about. I think it’s not unifying for the country.

by Anonymous | reply 92 | July 10, 2018 1:36 AM |
Pelosi said the election cannot be about impeachment. That's a long way from "We will not impeach." A very long way. Right now she is avoiding the trap and the Dems are focusing on healthcare, the despicable immigration tactics of ripping kids away from their parents and losing them, and a women's right to choose. There is also the threat to Medicare and Social Security. Believe me we can win on the issues and we know that Trump is, of course the main issue. We don't even have to say his name.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | July 10, 2018 1:42 AM |
nobody wins on the issues, R93. People win on anger. Pelosi is making a big mistake. She should be stoking the anger, not pouring molasses over it. Hatred of Trump is the primary issue that will bring people to the polls. Everything should be geared toward that.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | July 10, 2018 1:44 AM |
R93 is correct.
R94 seems divisive and trying to make "Dems" trip up.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | July 10, 2018 1:46 AM |
I agree. I've criticized Pelosi openly here (got blowback for it, from the Pro Pelosi troll) - but I think she's playing a careful long game here. She doesn't say it's 'off the table' like it's not ever going to be considered, she's just saying the upcoming midterms should be about key issues, and not the ongoing investigation.
In terms of 'stoking' anger, there's already a ton of anger, that's obvious. She's got proxies like Maxine Waters and others to do that for her and the leadership.
She didn't say that impeachment wouldn't HAPPEN. That remains to be seen after Mueller drops his report - right after the midterms hand control of the House (and the leadership) to the Dems. When that happens - her tone will carefully shift. Watch and see.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | July 10, 2018 1:47 AM |
r94 hatred of Trump is predicated on the key issues mentioned. You can fan the flames plenty about all those issues. Impeachment is implied all the way - it doesn't need to be stated outright by the Dem leaders.
I think they don't want to lose the large group of swing voters currently sitting on the fence, leaning away from Trump and ready to dump him and go blue. That group is very sensitive to negative campaigning, historically, and likes to hear the issues. If they can capture most of that group, the Dems will win the House and make large needed gains in the Senate as well, positioning for a successful ouster next year.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | July 10, 2018 1:50 AM |
What Pelosi actually said if anybody cares is that impeachment was not a priority right now, but if the Dems get back the house, and if she becomes leader again, she will make sure that real investigations will be conducted that could lead to some real trouble for Trump and Co. at some point. But here's the catch: she also said that impeachment must be bipartisan and that enough Republicans would have to be onboard with it too. Certainly not the way the Republicans impeached Bill Clinton back in the late 90's. And good luck Nancy, getting ANY of the Republicans in the House to go along with impeaching this criminal president, you know this isn't 1974, right?
by Anonymous | reply 98 | July 10, 2018 1:52 AM |
I am of course terribly sorry to be "divisive" in Trump's America.
And R97 negative campaigning actually wins. People say they don't like it. They are pretty much always lying. And people are bored silly by issues. they really are. Democrats always win on the "issues" and usually lose on everything else.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | July 10, 2018 1:53 AM |
[quote]But here's the catch: she also said that impeachment must be bipartisan and that enough Republicans would have to be onboard with it too.
Sure she's saying that now, the Repubs are still in power. Once the Dems take over the House all bets are OFF. They'll pass a vote through in a heartbeat. If they pick up a bunch of Repubs on the way, all the better; but if they have the majority needed among themselves do you think that will stop them?
r99 negative campaigning historically has always turned off swing voters. It's helped recent Republican races of course, with all their nasty mud slinging - look at the 2016 primaries. It's not always been positive in Democratic races, or with moderate fence sitters.
Besides as said there will be plenty of dirt kicking by proxy. It will happen for sure.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | July 10, 2018 1:57 AM |
because Democrats never actually think about moving the needle, R100. They sit down, read the polls, and say, ooops, can't do shit about shit, better fold. The biggest, and truest, attack on Democrats is that they are frauds, don't care, lie, just say what they say and don't believe in (think Hillary, not to relitigate that endless campaign, but that was part of the problem). What we need is a Democratic Party that looks like it is actually willing to go to the mat for something, ANY FUCKING THING. And don't just do it by proxy, do it bluntly and angrily. Make Mitch McConnell raise a fucking eyebrow. Make Trump whine on twitter. Make all the pundits cry about the incivility of it all. DO FUCKING SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE NOTICE! They actually have an opportunity here. Say you actually care about Roe v Wade and refuse to vote for somebody who will overturn it, and they are lying when they say they won't. Get into a big fight with people trying to say, well, they maybe won't. And talk about billionaire control of this entire government! Find a way to make this obvious whore for the rich an OBVIOUS WHORE FOR THE RICH.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | July 10, 2018 2:04 AM |
Negative campaigning suppresses the vote and does not change anyone's mind. That is a statistically proven fact. And I've worked on a lot of campaigns that confirm that. Ask yourself who benefits from a lower turnout? You can go negative in a certain way if you frame it around issues. For you to say "The Republicans are going to cut Social Security and medicare" is negative, but it also is true. Now if some group like Citizens to protect Social Security runs negative ads against GOP Candidates, then fine. But the Democrat cannot go negative and personal on the Republican.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | July 10, 2018 2:06 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 103 | July 10, 2018 2:06 AM |

r143. Yep, Putin is DJT's handler. FBI/DOJ know it, responsible media and journalists know it, Trump's own staff know it, and Congress knows it. Absolutely, a number of Republicans in the House and a few in the Senate are compromised. Paul Ryan, Miss Lindsey, and others had Russian oligarch major contributions to their pacs. The NRA took Russian money, then distributed that money for lobbying, ads, and candidate contributions. A number of Congress members may be under blackmail due to undisclosed sexual or financial improprieties. Others latch on to Trump due to party loyalty and assure their re-election chances in solid red districts and states. Of course Putin has an American person-in-waiting to follow Trump. Trump fanatics could embrace a Trump dynasty, with Trump-Putin favoring Junior to follow. While elevating Junior sounds unrealistic, and is not cognitively gifted; he but would be even more vulnerable to manipulation. The functions of U.S. democracy and it's institutions are rapidly deteriorating, so future transfers of power may be facilitated in a more dictatorial circumstance. A third of the U.S. population will want "Trumpism" endlessly. They dismiss the Russia meddling and collusion stories as fake news or don't care how Trump got elected. They listen to Murdoch's Fox News that has persistently worked to undermine any investigation related to Trump. Kushner would be out. His uninspiring personality doesn't connect, and he may be cooperating with Mueller's inquiry.

Well, the good news is that since Trump has made no bones about his reliance on Fox News and its various acolytes, and has installed multiple employees of Fox in the administration, and Mueller is investigating propaganda in the 2016 election, Mueller could very well cite Fox as an accomplice and shut them down. Certainly Fox executives could be under scrutiny for conspiring with Russian agents to undermine an election or a judicial inquiry. It is possible to prosecute a company's executives. It would not be Mueller's call to shut-down a media outlet. However, the FCC operates under certain guidelines and legalities, and if violations are confirmed, they can be sanctioned, fined, or shut-down if such is determined to be excessive and warranted. Of course, political and oversight factors impact how assertive the FCC acts.

The NBC lady having manufactured the scandal now backtracks.
NBC Capitol Hill reporter Leigh Ann Caldwell tweeted — then deleted — a claim about Justice Anthony Kennedy and President Donald Trump that got her in some hot water with the right.
Caldwell reported on Twitter that Kennedy and Trump had “been in negotiations for months” for the former’s replacement on the bench to be Brett Kavanaugh, and that once Kennedy had assurance that Kavanaugh was the pick, he felt he could retire.
Jeff B. ✔ @EsotericCD
This doesn't sound right to me at all. A Supreme Court justice essentially picking their successor may not be completely unprecedented (I just don't know) but I've certainly never heard of it. And any such 'deal' is unenforceable after the retirement announcement anyway. 7:48 AM - Jul 10, 2018
And then, about an hour later, Caldwell clarified that she didn’t have much information to confirm her reporting, which was based on one source:
Leigh Ann Caldwell ✔ @LACaldwellDC Replying to @LACaldwellDC
To be clear: This is from one source and dont have any info on whether potus talked to kennedy about a possible replacement. 7:53 AM - Jul 10, 2018
And voila, several hours later, after a taking much criticism you can see below, Caldwell deleted the tweet and issued a correction.
“I’ve deleted this tweet because it incorrectly implies a transactional nature in Kennedy’s replacement,” she wrote. “I am told by a source who was not directly part of the talks that Kennedy provided Pres. Trump/ WH a list of acceptable replacements.”

r156, I don't think that's quite the case. There's something to the story. The White House Press Office would've denied it and taken the win if what you posted were true. They haven't denied it, despite multiple opportunities and the initially poor sourcing from NBC.
Why? There could be a couple of reasons.
1. The Trump/Kennedy negotiations happened and they know it did.
2. They don't know whether or not it happened but believe it's plausible and therefore refuse to get caught up in what's potentially another major public deception.

Senate votes to support NATO ahead of Trump summit
Lawmakers on Tuesday overwhelmingly voted in favor of a motion supporting NATO, as President Trump continues to criticize the alliance ahead of his summit in Europe.
The nonbinding motion, which came as the Senate voted to reconcile its version of the annual defense policy bill with that of the House, expresses the Senate’s support for NATO and calls on negotiators to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to it.
The 97-2 vote in the Senate comes as Trump heads to Brussels. He will also travel to the United Kingdom and meet one-on-one with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki during his trip.
GOP Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.) and Mike Lee (Utah) voted against the measure.
Democratic Sen. Jack Reed (R.I.) proposed the measure, calling the U.S. support for NATO "ironclad."

R185, they know he is. They have even more evidence than we know. the international intelligence community has been involved in helping to build a case against Trump. Once our own FBI-Counter Intelligence Division got involved back in 2016 or even earlier, the international intel community got involved. So Trump has very few, if any secrets from the heads of state from the G7 or NATO mission. He may be too stupid to realize it, but that's like a 3yr old who closes his eyes real tight and then says " You can't see me!" The Senate vote is very important. Because Trump cannot arbitrarily decide all on his own to pull out of NATO. It requires Congressional approval and they're telling him he won't get it.

Example #3,522: President Donald Trump unleashed his most remarkable broadside yet against a European ally on Wednesday, accusing Germany of being “totally controlled by Russia” and of not meeting its obligations to the NATO alliance. “Germany, as far I’m concerned, is captive to Russia,” Trump said.
Trump's verbal attack on Germany came in a breakfast meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg early Wednesday, setting a combative tone for the two-day summit of the alliance in Brussels. The harsh rhetoric suggested that Trump had no intention of patching up relationships bruised by a contentious Group of Seven summit in Canada last month.

You know, waiting for Mueller is IMO, not necessarily the right game to play. I believe that if these Mid Terms come out the way we hope, Trump has done enough that is impeachable, without knowing a shred of evidence that Mueller has developed. What he did on our borders to those kids, and what he is doing to weaken our national security, and dozens of other actions he's taken, are grounds for impeachment. And if Asshole Brett Kavanaugh is correct, yes, Impeachment hearings will cripple Trump's administration and that's a good thing. Because every single department ought to be under investigation, with hearings and requests for information that keep those agencies so busy, it will be impossible for those agencies to do their job. Fuck them all.

All efforts should be directed to gaining majorities in BOTH houses. House will be great but Senate is crucial. Impeachment only by Dems can have unforeseen consequences of helping Trump win second term. I'd rather the Dems win Senate and start blocking his judicial nominations. Who is to say that another or more of the older Rethug SCITUSes won't make a secret deal with Trump to retire and let him appoint young ultraconservatives who will be there for decades? This is a win the war not the battle moment for Dems. Think wisely and strategically. With a small Senate majority we can't convict on impeachment without the GOP Senators so unless something drastic comes out from Mueller or otherwise, they won't go for it. So concentrate on winning even slight majorities in Congress so we can block Trump and GOP, and then on winning in 2020.

Bush left office January 20, 2009, at noon. Barack Obama became POTUS. As much as I hated Bush/Cheney, and I wanted to personally kick their asses, and as angry as I was at Pelosi in that moment, I understand, and now agree with her decision not to start hearings and proceedings to prosecute them.
First, we were in a major financial crisis. We were hemorraging jobs daily. Go look up the stats. Housing foreclosures, jobs lost, retirement savings lost (38%) and businesses failing. Even after the first injection of funds from Bush the banks weren't lending. We were staring into the abyss.
I believe Obama and Pelosi discussed it. I believe it was not Pelosi all by herself standing on the mountain top, saying no to prosecuting them. We couldn't afford it at that time. We were in a state of financial emergency and the impact was being felt all over the world.
So what was she supposed to do? Was she supposed to tell Obama, "Well ,Mr President, we are going to tie up the House and the Senate with hearings, and investigations, and all kinds of inquiries, and the Republicans in the Senate and the House whose cooperation you may need will be pissed off and they will not vote to charge anyone with crimes, but hey, let's do it." She did a cost/benefit analysis. It was too costly. She was right.
We could have spent all of Obama's first term looking backwards at what happened when Bush was President. Or we could move forward and save the economy, and get healthcare. As for impeachment, when the Dems took the House back in 2006, they still didn't have the votes they needed to go after Bush/Cheney. So do you take a shot and miss, and alienate votes you could get for other issues in the process or do you move forward?
She put country first. I have no quarrel with that. She's effective. That's why they constantly go after her and try to demonize her.

A lot of what our media has already been reporting has been the result of discreet leaks and intel dumps. Speaking of which: Trump yesterday signed an executive order that allows him to make political appointments of administrative law judges. Previously, these judges had to complete an exam and undergo a competitive selection process.
This will "turn just about all administrative law judges within the executive branch from somewhat independent civil servants into politically appointed and politically removable bureaucrats who basically will have no one to answer to other than the administration officials who are responsible for their appointment," said Stephen Vladeck, an expert on administrative law at the University of Texas law school.

Mueller ain't playin': Paul Manafort is being treated like a "VIP" in prison, with a private bathroom and shower, a personal laptop and phone, and access to a meeting space for his legal team, Special Counsel Robert Mueller told a judge.
Manafort asked for a delay in this trial, citing a lack of access to his lawyers. But visitor logs and recordings of phone calls show that isn’t the case, prosecutors said in a court filing Wednesday.
"Contrary to Manafort’s assertions about his jail conditions, Manafort is in a private unit in which he can review materials and prepare for trial," Mueller’s legal team said. "Manafort remarked in a taped prison call that he is able to visit with his lawyers every day."
Manafort, who was assigned an extra-large cell, also has access to a separate workroom at the jail to meet with his attorneys from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and visitor logs from the prison show that each week Manafort has had multiple visits with his legal team, according to Mueller’s filing.
On monitored prison phone calls, Manafort has said he’s being treated as a “VIP," the special counsel said. In the last three weeks, Manafort has had more than 100 phone calls with his attorneys, and another 200 calls with other individuals, according to the filing.

Mueller has been monitoring everything including phone calls.

That's not what Trump claimed. He said Germany gets 60 to 70% of its energy from Russia. That is false. From the BBC: Germany relies on Russia for most of its imports of natural gas. But gas makes up less than 20% of Germany's energy mix for power production.

R257 I doubt the Left is coordinating those points but, yes, they should and it is something we should all push. It should be all we are saying right now- no Judges or Justices until the Mueller Report. Then we must also say all his appointees should be removed if the report shows crimes and treason. That would be the only deterrent to it happening again.

If such, he would continue to be under oversight protection by the SS, but they are not going to be standing outside his door as if they are prison guards. The SS would call-in or check-in on him periodically; or intervene if there is any inkling of potential physical harm. The SS would engage prison officials to make sure his food was safe and that he is safe while venturing into the yard for exercise, for example.

Just because they don't use his belligerent style is no reason to assume they let him walk all over him. Merkel, Macron, Trudeau, have all stood up to him. But remember. It has been an established practice for decades that the United States has had a leadership role in the world. In most cases this has been reflect in our willingness to shoulder financial and technological burdens. We sort of run the show. It's not about being taken advantage of. It's about being able to have and exercise a degree of control.
And as long as we seem to work cooperatively, and collaborate, our allies are fine with an imperfect arrangement. In many ways, since WW II the countries of Europe have been our clients. To see someone like Trump attempting to smash those relationships to pieces simply at the behest of Putin, raises some very basic questions about stability in Europe. Putin/Russia is dangerous. No one country in Europe has or can afford a standing army, and the advanced technology we possess to be a deterrent to Putin. Yes, they all have a military, but it pales in comparison to ours. Russia for all intents and purposes is a rogue nation.

My gut tells me he's a goner after the trial regardless of what he says or does. Comey's book describes how mob "made men" pledge to not kill each other, but still do. Manafort is too involved and knows too much to be left hanging out there for the next 15 - 20 years.

Goodlatte looks like the moronic party hack he is and Gowdy looks about as good as he did during Hillary's Benghazi hearing where she reduced him to a sweating, shivering wreck. The Republicans as a whole look really, really bad right now. Strozk is doing great.
Democrats have now said they will release the transcript of Strozk's House Intel interview by the end of the day unless Republicans can point to the rule saying they can't.

Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer who is under federal investigation, bought a $6.7 million apartment in April in a new Manhattan skyscraper that is being developed by two of Mr. Trump’s longtime friends, according to people familiar with the transaction.
Located at 111 Murray Street in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood, the project is being developed by a partnership of real estate companies Fisher Brothers, Witkoff and New Valley. New Valley is headed by Howard Lorber, a real estate developer and longtime friend of Mr. Trump. Steve Witkoff, the founder of Witkoff, is also a longtime friend of Mr. Trump.

Also, state elections matter. The more Dem AGs, more lawsuits against the federal government.
More Dems in state leg, state and regional actions/international treaties.

So, I have a tad bit of expertise in this area having spent the better part of 10 years (in two Democratic administrations) vetting candidates, including judges. This is all very strange. Rosenstein asked for the names of three prosecutors from each of the 93 U.S. Attorney's offices. You most definitely do NOT need nearly 300 federal prosecutors to review documents for a Supreme Court nominee. That is beyond bizarre. When then Judge Stephen Breyer was going to be nominated, the White House Counsel asked for help from about 5-6 DOJ lawyers who were already handling political vetting. That's about all you need. And you certainly don't need name from across the entire country. For a project like this, if you thought that you needed extra help, you would go to either the U.S. Attorney's office for D.C. or the Eastern District of Virginia, or Rosenstein's old office in Maryland. You wouldn't considering bringing in people from the West Coast.
Plus, the timing of this request is off. You look into a nominee's opinions, speeches, writings, books, etc. BEFORE he or she is nominated, not after. Once the nomination is made it is a bit late. What if you find something controversial? Is Trump going to pull the nomination? "Woops, we should have found this out sooner. Sorry."
Finally, you don't take federal prosecutors (and certainly not that many) off the line to do this sort of work -- and Rosenstein who has been around the Department for the better part of three decades knows that. None of this makes any sense. Something is up.

That article says it's "uncharted," not regarding whether they would lose Secret Service protection (the article clearly says they won't, barring an act of Congress). It mentions that it's "uncharted," and the Agency wouldn't speak on HOW it would be carried out. That's what the article says.
by Anonymous | reply 409 | July 13, 2018 2:58 AM |
Thanks for the insight R406. What's your best guess as to what could be up?
by Anonymous | reply 410 | July 13, 2018 2:59 AM |
I don't know, R410, but this is definitely not the norm. Had the request come from someone other than Rosenstein, I might have chalked it up to the usual bumbling inefficiency and a lack of experience and expertise as to how the Department works that I've come to expect from Trump's people. But, Rod Rosenstein has been around long enough and involved in DOJ at the highest levels to make a mistake about something like this. I bet that over the next few days we will start to see speculation from others wondering what this is really about.
Even if they only want a small handful of people, why waste everyone's time culling through 279 resumes. The people in the leadership of the Department know who the "stars" are in the offices around the country. They don't need this kind of a cattle-call for a special project like this.

I'm beginning to think that the reason the Republicans are working so hard to discredit the Mueller investigation and to cover up Russian interference is not because they are trying to protect Trump. They couldn't care less about Trump. They could get rid of him today, install Pence and still have everything they want. No, they're trying to undermine Mueller because they're trying to protect themselves and the party. When everything comes out, we're going to see that the treason runs deep in the GOP.

Russian operatives working out of the St. Petersberg-based Internet Research Agency (IRA) used fake accounts disguised as local U.S. media outlets to exploit Americans' trust in local news.
An NPR report found that accounts linked to the IRA operated at least 48 social media accounts disguised as U.S.-based local media organizations, including @ElPasoTopNews, @MilwaukeeVoice, @CamdenCityNews and @Seattle_Post.
None of the accounts reviewed by NPR, some of which had tens of thousands of followers, had been used so far to spread disinformation, according to the report. The link to the IRA suggests that the accounts were to be used in some future operation.
"The Russians are playing a long game. They've developed a presence on social media. They've created these fictitious persons and fictitious organizations that have built up over a period of time a certain trustworthiness among people that follow them," House Intelligence Committee ranking member Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) told the news outlet.
The accounts, one of which was opened as early as May of 2014, were shut down by Twitter after years of posting real news stories. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), who sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, told NPR that the accounts represented Russia's ongoing effort to interfere in future U.S. political events and elections.
"This effort is not over," she said. "It continues to this very day, where the Russians are trying to sow the seeds of discontent in our society, take advantage of the polarization that exists."
The Trump administration moved to punish the Kremlin's domestic security bureau last month for its involvement in cyberattacks, sanctioning five Russian entities and three Russian nationals accused of aiding the Federal Security Service.

Gabe Sherman, who wrote THE authoritative book on Roger Ailes and Fox News, The Loudest Voice in the Room, was on NPR talking about Shine, the former Fox executive, former Hannity producer, who is now deputy WH Communications Director. He was discussing the close personal relationship between Trump & Hannity, how they talk every day for at least an hour, and how Trump rarely misses Hannity's show. He has definitely become one of the key players influencing Trump.
Sherman is very credible as a journalist. He was told by someone in the WH that Hannity is pushing Trump to fire Mueller right after he turns in his report. The scenario Gabe Sherman described is that Hannity "suggested" that Mueller is supposed to be preparing his Obstruction Report and it'll come out in the next couple of months. Maybe September. And Trump should fire him after that, and spin it telling us "OK. I've been very patient. I waited for him to do his investigation and complete his report. Now enough is enough. This ends here."
The strategy is to wear down support for Mueller, so that when Trump fires him people will be "relieved." Trump's a damned fool and so is Hannity if they believe Russia Investigation will go away, just fade and get shut down if Trump fires Mueller. So we have guys like Giuliani and Hannity giving Trump advice, which is all PR and Politics, and Mueller who is looking at the Law. I hope Mueller releases stuff before the midterms. If Trump attempts to fire him before the midterms people will be outraged and the incentive to get people to the polls will be greater.

Maybe Rosenstein was directed to reach out to the field offices for more attorneys by Sessions. Maybe Sessions (and Trump) felt like they wanted to get people "untainted" by being part of the Washington DC "deep state" mind set, so Sessions insisted Rosenstein compile a roster of "fresh faces" or something. They may not use all of them, but they may be making a list for future reference.

r470 Trump hardly ever has press conferences, but he always acts this way when he does. He calls news organizations that tell the truth and criticize him "fake news". And the stupid deplorables love him for it.
by Anonymous | reply 472 | July 13, 2018 2:43 PM |
Well, that's the typical form the SC investigation takes, r471. What do you think is coming?

The Republicans don't have to act like rats and flee the sinking ship. All they have to do is act like they didn't know and Fox News will controle the narrative that Trump played them and the conservatives will be very eager to believe them (what's the alternative? That they abandon the conservatives and become socialist liberals? That's way too far of a leap.).
The neo cons created a toxic enviroment that will survive everything and that includes the aftermath of Trump's fall from grace.

WaPo just reported Kushner actually doesn't have sufficient security clearance to review certain sensitive info. So they lied, err, weren't entirely forthright about his security clearance approval.
Whatever this announcement is, no leaks. Press has no clue.
Because Mueller is the real deal.
by Anonymous | reply 492 | July 13, 2018 3:43 PM |
I’m very disheartened. I feel like expectations keep getting lower and lower. First, everyone said Trump and his whole family were going to jail. Then it was only impeachment. Then I was informed that impeachment doesn’t mean getting thrown out, which is what I was always taught. Oh, he has to be impeached and then convicted.
Now people are saying he won’t even be impeached. Which means he gets away with everything. And there’s no point to any of this. I’m very depressed.

R539 For example why Russians come first, they are indicting the Russians who created Guccifer 2.0. Before you can charge Roger Stone with conspiring with Guccifer you have to prove they were Russian.
by Anonymous | reply 551 | July 13, 2018 4:15 PM |
Well, Rod Rosenstein just signed his resignation letter with Mueller not far behind. This is a very significant package of indictments, Russians. How dare Roddy step on Trumpy's visit with the Queen! And just days before he meets privately with Putin. These indictments put our Presidential election fraud right at Putin's door steps. The detail is breathtaking. Mueller has every single detail. Trump will be SO pissed off. Rosenstein and Mueller announced this today for a reason. I think they want it to be out there ahead of Trump's meeting.

This is excellent. Mueller is establishing a glossary of understanding here. He's establishing the fact that interference happened. He's establishing the fact that it involves Russia, and he's establishing the framework in which it happened. He's moved the conversation from "it didn't happen" to "it happened, and here's how we know."
He's hinted at election software hacking, and the indictments themselves hint at at least GOP member being involved.

The larger conspiracy story, in my opinion, may be the one about the conservative news outlet.
Notice it was a right-wing Daily Caller reporter who immediately blew up the story about the candidate for Congress, which directly precedes the mention of the conservative news-Russian intelligence conspiracy.
