Early first round matches of note:
Richie Gasquet vs. Monfils
Paire vs. Murray
AND
Grigor vs. Stan

Nadal got another cake draw. Not that it matters that much. I know everybody knows that Nadal is vulnerable on grass so he must need to play really great to have options. He could be a dangerous rival in final rounds for not mentally strong players (or young and naive ones) but now that Federer kick his ass in their last five matches i find difficult to believe he really have chances (he lost against Poulille in an exhibition)

Final will be Delpo vs Cilic. Delpo wins it in five sets.

can't believe Nadal got such a great 1st week draw. Federer got a good first 3 rounds too.
heading into Wimbledon, we have 3 finals tomorrow:
Eastbourne: Wozniacki vs. big hitting but mental case title-less Sabalenka & M. Zverev has another chance at a first title against also title-less Lacko
Antalya: title-less Mannarino vs. DL fave Dzumhur
so we could end up with 3 new titlists coming into Wimbledon but we're guaranteed at least 1
so

so today in Antalya Dzumhur def. Mannarino for his third title. Mannarino is now 0-5 in finals. Not as bad as Benneteau's 0-10 record though
In Eastbourne, Wozniacki def. Sabalenka and M. Zverev def. Lacko for his first title.

Williams has a point. She was No 1 and had to sit out to have her baby. It's stupid for her not to be able to come back. It's only fair if male players are required to sit out when their wives are ready to give birth, then to make it back if they can the next year. Women souldn't get punished for being women. Besides, Serena Williams is one of the best Americans athletes, period. She is also great at Wimbledon.
She better look great out here though.

[quote]Women souldn't get punished for being women.
No one was "punishing" Serena for being a women by denying her a seeding in Wimbledon . Just like no one is punishing Murray [two Wimbledon champion ] foe being injured by denying him a seeding . Using emotional phrases like "punishing for being woman" and "punishing for being a mother" is a good tactic to intimidate already ultra PC executives of AELTC/ATP /WTA. But it doesn't make logical sense .
And guess what who is now been "Punished for being a woman " and for not "choosing to be a mother " ? Dominica Cibukova, who also happen to be a WOMAN !! She decided not to be a mother and instead did lot of "personal sacrifice"[see what I did here ?] in last one year and worked hard for her ranking . And now she is being "punished" for not being a mother and her rightful place which she earned is taken away from her just because she chooses to not be a mother

R17 the whole discussion about protected seeding of Serena is bullshit - Kim Clijsters went to have a baby, returned abd made her way to the top. I have impression it's because many people commenting on the issue have no idea about tennis but see her as an icon of black feminism that this is so widely discussed. Where were there we Azarenka had her son?

How often do these single tennis players have sex? I can't imagine young studs like Coric can manage to go celibate for more than a week. Wimbledon has always been the one Slam that follows its own rules on seeding. If the committee chose to seed Serena, I don't see the big deal. They always take past history on grass into account. She's won Wimbledon 7 times and won in 2015 and 2016 before she was on maternity leave. It's a seeding at one tournament. It's not like the WTA raised her overall ranking to #25.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | July 1, 2018 5:45 PM |
I don't have a problem with them seeding Serena either. But why the big deal about "pregnancy"? If she had missed the last year with a bad knee, how is that any different?
Perhaps - I'm not entirely clear on the issue - the question is whether all women should get a protected ranking when out for pregnancy. Again, fine. But protected ranking is used for entry into events, not for seeding. So if that's the actual issue, they're conflating two different situations.

by Anonymous | reply 60 | July 1, 2018 9:08 PM |
R57, you could look at the pregnancy issue from a broader perspective: female tennis players are genetically gifted, they are the type of women who should be encouraged to have children.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | July 1, 2018 11:36 PM |
Who cares if Serena was seeded or not? She's good enough she'll be able to blast her way through the tournament anyway. If anyone should be upset about her not being seeded, it's the cannon fodder who will have to play her sooner versus later.
And, R61, don't you think there would be a trainer hanging out in, you know, training?
by Anonymous | reply 63 | July 1, 2018 11:45 PM |
Kim Clijsters is often discussed regarding Serena's seeding. Anybody know what's their ranking prior to their maternity leave?
by Anonymous | reply 64 | July 1, 2018 11:55 PM |
Well, obviously it's one of his entourage, so no need for the sarcasm...but since he said treatment, I was curious which one would be filming him - possibly naked as some have assumed - watching the match, R63. It was pretty rhetorical as well since I doubt anyone here was in the room with them.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | July 1, 2018 11:59 PM |
Kim Clijsters is not comparable because she retired in 2007 then got pregnant and gave birth in 2008 before returning in 2009. Serena won the 2017 AO while pregnant and returned 6 months after giving birth

66: Exactly, Clijsters retired, then got pregnant had her child and then decided to come back. She returned in very good form, got results soon and got seeded fast, in fact her best results on GS were after being a mother. Serena retired due to pregnancy, in my opinion she should have protected ranking like the players who got a serious injury. Nobody wants to see a Serena-Muguruza, or a Serena-Kvitova in first round

by Anonymous | reply 77 | July 2, 2018 1:29 PM |
The transition from clay to grass is not easy, and Sloane's game doesn't fit grass. Losing a big final that you have in your pocket doesn't put you in the best mood for the next big challenge (and there are a good bunch of examples of Wimbledon early loses after a big dissapointment at Roland Garros). I read a good bunch of opinions yesterday and Sloane was in almost all bets for an early loss

by Anonymous | reply 79 | July 2, 2018 2:23 PM |
As people said, it’s not comparable. Clijsters retired and led no one to believe she would ever be back. She said she was done with tennis. Having a child “changed” her mind. Serena played up until she could with full intentions on coming back after pregnancy.

I agree with Ms. Stubbs. You can't play a retrieving style of play on grass like Sloane does and Vekic is a decent grass court player.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | July 2, 2018 3:28 PM |
Slloane was awful and should have played Eastbourne last week. She doesn't have the experience on grass to just come into Wimbledon cold (she did this last year for her injury comeback too and lost easily). If she chooses to play DC, that will be her last chance to gain a bit of ranking points. From Canada through the USO she'll be defending a ton.
Coric's loss was a surprise. Medvedev is a decent player but Coric was too passive. He showed some aggression during his win over Federer but not today.

What this says about Grigor and what this says about Dani's caliber?

It doesn't matter if he changes his coach unless someone will be able to put Rafa Nadal's brain in his head he will be the typical talented player who always underperform. He is not a winner is as simple as that, and unfortunately for him by the time the big four retires people like Zverev and Shapovalop will be on top, so i don't think he'll have his chance of winning a GS (the same for Nishikori, he had his chance and blow it up)

Murray who easily beat Stan last week withdrew from Wimbledon because he wasn't yet ready. But Stan, who was playing terribly, stays in the draw and smokes Grigor. It seems like Andy just chickened out fearing he'd lose first round.

by Anonymous | reply 114 | July 2, 2018 6:35 PM |
R100, if Grigor is putting energy into topping Dani, that just may be the start of the problem, and not just because Dani is probably a needy bottom.
Grigor needs to be fucked if anyone needed it. A lot. Bottom for a while. Be vers. It would do wonders for his game. Well not if he bottoms too close to a match at Wimbledon (white is unforgiving if he's learning to be tidy). But if he would just stop trying to be hard to be straight / a top, he'd realize he could do anything once he gave up his ass.

When someone drops off the tour, for any reason, their ranking drops. Whether injury, pregnancy, or rest. Why should pregnancy be different than any other reason. Seeding Serena 25 made sense because she is not the 200th best in the world and you don't want her meeting a top 16 seed in an early round- so it's practical. But I really don't see why pregnancy takes priority over any other reason. There is probably more choice with pregnancy than there is with injury- so fairness does not seem to be an issue.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | July 2, 2018 7:30 PM |
Poor Grigor- he is such a nice guy too. Met him last year in a NYC Equinox- could not be nicer or more down to earth. He is not a champ though. He folds. I also think it's technical. He footwork is not at the top level. He take big strides all the time. He does not adjust with small steps and is off balance a lot. His serve is also loopy for some reason.

118: When someone drops on the rankings due to injury they have a protected ranking that can help the player enter in tournaments when he/she recovers. Generally that pr don't affect the real ranking (with the expection of Seles who was number one shared with Steffi when she returned). It's not the first time that an unseeded player is seeded at a GS. In fact Wimbledon used to mess with the seeds a lot. I remember Alex Corretja deciding not going to Wimbledon after being severely downgraded on Wimbledon seeds (of course he was terrible on grass so he had nothing to lose)

Williams had her protected ranking, so she doesn't need to qualify for tournaments; it never means seeding ranking though, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka haven't come back as seeds.

Radwanska came very close to losing today. I think she might have saved a match point or 2. Ruse's grunt sounds like Halep's and she kind of looks like Cirstea.
So Maria's Mallorca title was not a fluke. Her win over Svitolina has to be a career best for her.
Cilic moves comfortably through.
I wonder if Kuznetsova will retire this year too. She lost first round to Strycova. Grass was never Sveta's best surface though

on paper, tomorrow's matches for center court 1 don't look to be very competitive.
I'm interested in court 2 match Thiem vs. Baghdatis
court 3: Kerber vs. Zvonareva and Garcia vs. Bencic
court 18 Osaka vs. Niculescu...quite a contrast in styles
I'd say I'm most interested in court 11 Verdasco vs. Tiafoe.

I'm growing very concerned about young Grigor. I think he needs a new coach. A ginger, grand slam winning, fit older player to serve as a father figure and mentor. I hope he's feeling like he needs to make all kinds of changes. Even personal ones. No ladies just concentrate on tennis.

Why did the thread not get a proper introduction? I appreciate the OP taking the time to do but I love the startup grand slam intros with guest appearances by all the DL tennis characters. Where's Misey, Mirka, Brooklyn, Carlo, Frank, Pammie, Chrissie, Granny Venus, young Grigor, Thirty Jim Courier, Gramps, Sweet Ckaes and the rest of the rag tag cast of characters?
by Anonymous | reply 140 | July 3, 2018 2:32 AM |
R119 when you met him:
A) did your gaydar ping at all? Do you think he could be at least curious?
B) do you think he's the same, better or worse looking in person as on tv and in pics?
C) was Dani (his coach but probably not for much longer) there with him?
by Anonymous | reply 141 | July 3, 2018 2:54 AM |
[R141], I'm not R119 but i have met Grigor on a number of occasions, worked with him at a tournament, and I've said this before on here that while he doesn't outright ping, there is a very easy-going, comfortable in himself, comfortable being handsy with other players, up for anything kind of air about him. I liked him a lot. He was great to deal with when working with event sponsors - very articulate, very chatty and extremely likable. He is better looking in person than on TV, and Dani was not his coach in the years i dealt with him.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | July 3, 2018 3:01 AM |
R142 thanks. So you think he's at least friendly/accepting of gays? He is Bulgarian but he seems to live a more western European way of life

by Anonymous | reply 144 | July 3, 2018 3:19 AM |
R140, I appreciate the effort of those opening salvos from prior threads, but that ragtag cast has grown as old and tiresome as Gramps. We need some new blood, and by that I don't mean the same recycled pictures of Thiem's ass. There's a whole new cast of characters out there besides Mirka, Brooklyn, Jim C and the other old dogs and ponies. Maybe I'm just a grouch but that old shtick I just skip over.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | July 3, 2018 4:06 AM |
People were asking for a thread and none was appearing, so I started it. Sorry. Whoever normally does it should start #2 when it comes.
I knew I couldn't do "justice" to the usual opener, so I didn't even try. I think I did tank Grigor by making him the coverboy, tho.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | July 3, 2018 4:19 AM |
I thought it was fine, OP, other than the Grigor jinx.

I still get a chuckle here and there from cock hungered Pammie, thirsty Jim C, studly Carlo and only on a witty occasion Mirka and Brooklyn. But we could use some new blood. When the old cast is used correctly it's still kinda fun.

The new blood younger players aren't as fun to mock and impersonate.
The best it got recently was when someone found the instagram of some mannish looking female fan with a huge chin who was attending some of the clay tournaments and pretended this girl was actually Viktoria Azarenka. And a bunch of people here actually believed this unfortunate looking girl was Azarenka.

Someone asked if Grigor pinged- no. He was just unusually nice. Has a very relaxed and happy aura about him. Very cute- great body. Could he be gay? Sure. But I would say no. Jim Courier is definitely not gay. I’ve met him too- olaing early am up at Baker’s field (Columbia) indoor. He’s cordial and a bit cold. He turns it on a bit with his commentary persona. Jim is a smart and ambitious guy- kind of like the retired John Mac, only more conservative in manner. Both love everything about the game.

To coach someone who is at the end of his career and with a lot of tittles under his belt must be difficult for sure. And of course there are players who are easier to work with than other (some young players act like spoiled divas from the beginning of their careers)

Jack Sock has been in a slump since he won in Paris last year. He cannot handle being highly ranked. Pressure is too much. I have also heard that he is a slacker- not much interested in training etc- like Tomic, like Kyrgios. All like to party. Dunno how accurate the information is.
by Anonymous | reply 230 | July 3, 2018 8:31 PM |
Sock is beefy and out of shape for a tennis player. And like Coco every match has to be a major ordeal, full of whining, cursing and temper tantrums. Once he starts to train seriously and get over the victim complex he'll be a better player.
by Anonymous | reply 231 | July 3, 2018 8:37 PM |

There are some very good matches going on outside courts [with very small stand] but they are fully packed . and very entertaining .I just saw last few games of BeEdene and Radu match on court 16 and whole stand was pack to fullest . And game from players was very good. Crowd was fully involved too .
And it was so satisfying to see Radu win, who probably is 5 feet at the most . It is better to watch these matches than Nadal/ Dela or Serena/Tomnkova match which are very high priced.
I think in first week people should take ground pass which is probably cheap and provides better entertainment . Any British gays here who had ever been to Wimbledon in past ? How did you plan?
by Anonymous | reply 278 | July 4, 2018 4:53 PM |
I know there big names but most of the time the more expensive big courts have less entertaining and competitive matches. The outside courts are where you want to be in the first week, especially since they are cheaper.

I often complain on here about the cameras breaking away from the players changing shirts, but after the fourth set, Isner pleading his case about Hawkeye, he was shirtless and, might I add, looking fantastic. Terrific! I hadn't really been a fan of him in that department, but now I am.

Ekaterina Makarova is the giant-killer Her win over Wozniacki was her *12th* top 10 win at a slam. 2 slam SFs, 6 slam QFs and 14 R16s.

Here are grand slams top 10 win by active players

She's played two matches, Chris.

R276 Ditto, but of course her part of the draw just keeps getting easier as the tournament progresses. Will she even face a seed before the final? Good god! Oh, that's right. Keys is her 4th round (can't roll my eyes obviously enough).

And if Serena reach the final rounds most top players will suffer panic attacks having to face her. Frankly, with some exceptions like Kerber and Muguruza that shown in the past that they can play against Serena on a big stage most of the top players will lose against Serena even if she is far from being at her peak.
And i love big servers (with nothing more in their games) are losing left and right

by Anonymous | reply 301 | July 4, 2018 7:19 PM |
Wozniacki often is rude and dismissive of lower ranked players. When Bencic rose up the rankings a couple of years ago, Wozniacki couldn't stand the idea of losing to her. She was such a bitch during their matches. I do appreciate the Woz for being blunt about Sharapova's doping situation. I hope they play during the USO series at some point
by Anonymous | reply 302 | July 4, 2018 7:25 PM |
I can't stand Makarova. She beats top seeds and rarely follows it up so though blunt, Wozniacki is right. Makarova also does stuff during matches to throw off competitors, like taking injury.
by Anonymous | reply 303 | July 4, 2018 7:28 PM |
yeah I'm not a fan of Makarova either. She has a "skiddish" and streaky game with kooky strokes that aren't always consistent. Her serve is weak and she relies solely on placement for free points on it. I don't care that Woz is gone though. She got her lucky slam and needs to shut up. I doubt she'll win another
by Anonymous | reply 304 | July 4, 2018 7:32 PM |
Wozniacki will have a few chances at the us open. She plays well there. Hard court is her best surface.

Come on, Errani didn't even play in Simona's league Caroline is a bratty player. She got lucky with her GS, she should enjoy it because there's the only one she is going to win. The truth is the level of bitchiness on the wta is very high. I don't buy what atp tries to sell that they are very friends and all the crap, but they are very far from the levels of animosity of the wta. Of course it happens the same in U14, U16 and juniors. Les petits as finals between boys end in a nice handshake or even a hug, the girls finals always end in tears. Last years semifinal between Lopatcheskaya and Gauff was unbeliveable, with Gauff drama after losing and the ucranian crying after every point lost (even when she was winning, it's really amazing she was able to win after those displays of dramatism), on the positive note the handshake was nice, and Lopatcheskaya was nice with her oponent in the final after losing (but she needs to change her ways because she is going to be trashed on internet if she does the same once became pro, and even for her own health because those level of drama can't be good for her heart)

Dear Diary,
Why is Caroline Wozniacki such a huge bitch? Is it because you could project a feature film on her huge forehead?
by Anonymous | reply 311 | July 4, 2018 8:23 PM |
It's funny you say that, R276. Up to either 2 or 3 years ago I felt the very same way. Couldn't say why I didn't like Serena, I just didn't.
So cue Wimbledon, either 2 or 3 years ago, on this very 4th of July day and she was playing against a Brit and in very real danger of losing! I was surprised. The American in me said "oh, c'mon, you can't lose to a Brit! On the Fourth of July!!!!"
Sure enough, she started to make her way back and she did win the match. Don't remember how far she made it, but that was the day I became a Serena Williams fan. She's fabulous. Her baby is adorable and Go Serena!!
I'm sure the tennis nerds can tell me what year that was.
by Anonymous | reply 312 | July 4, 2018 8:25 PM |
Serena and Venus were annoying bratty teens when they started playing, (but not even them were at Hingis' level) but Venus became a classy player with years and Serena has her moments but she is funny when she wants and now she is in legend status i think people end loving her (and missing her when she is not playing)
by Anonymous | reply 313 | July 4, 2018 8:33 PM |

R312, it was three years ago (2015) vs. Heather Watson. Serena won the title that yr vs Muguruza, and that was the year she got within two wins of the calendar year Grand Slam, before Roberta Vinci improbably beat her in the US Open SF.

by Anonymous | reply 321 | July 5, 2018 4:19 AM |
R312 Odd that that match made you a Serena fan because it made me want to strangle her more than most of her many, many undeserved wins. Watson should have won that match, but Serena mishit the ball all over the place on some key points and it worked out for her...like it usually does. Sigh. Plus, she hindered Watson a couple times and wasn't called for it. Then she VERY OBVIOUSLY hindered Azarenka on a break point (while down a set and a break) in the quarterfinals and got away with it again - even after Azarenka objected. Such a shady bitch and cheat!

And kukushin of course lose his serve when he was serving to hold in the first set. And once Nadal is ahead i doubt this guy has a chance to stop him. Mentally Nadal plays in other league, one could thing that after two years of slump players were able to overcome the intimidating factor but he seems to regain it in the last two years. On grass he is vulnerable but even with that most players don't have the mental strenght to even challenge him

Cilic is pathetic, he was dominating very clearly the match but he is not a champion, he doesn't have the mentality needed to profit from good form. He was very lucky in the US Open he won that he had to face Nishikori in the final instead of someone stronger

There are a lot of promising players, some of them will end being journeymen, others will be the next Dimitrov-Berdich, and with a little luck some of them will dominate. I really like Shapovalov but for some reason he reminds me of Hewitt. Tsitsipas has very good results too but till now the only one new gen player that really showed that he is able to win big tournaments and be high in the ranking is Zverev

And Sascha lost his serve when he was serving to stay in the second set. At least Garbiñe was able to win the first one (with a lot of problems) but she started well the second
by Anonymous | reply 371 | July 5, 2018 6:59 PM |
Garbiñe´s advantage didn't last. Unless she will be able to improve (a lot) i doubt she'll defend her tittle. The truth is Garbiñe's game is very bad from the beginning of the year. She gets motivated with the big tittles but you can't win unless you are playing well before, i know her grass season last year was not spectacular and she won wimbledon, but this year was even worse
by Anonymous | reply 372 | July 5, 2018 7:06 PM |
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question (it probably is), but I don't really follow tennis anymore except at the Majors and I don't quite get why so many people have been so bullish about Sascha. To me, his game is fine but with no outstanding weapons that can really set him apart from the other top players of his generation. What am I missing here?
by Anonymous | reply 373 | July 5, 2018 7:07 PM |
R373: If you only watch majors you never watched the best version of Zverev. The results are obvious, he won several Master 1000 and he is number 3, when the rest of the new gen (even the ones who are doing really well) are not even top 20. He was able to destroy Nadal in the second set of the final on Rome (and the rain really saved Nadal's ass that day). He can be very very good, but for some reason on GS you only get this cheap copy of himself. Grass is far from being his best surface anyway
by Anonymous | reply 374 | July 5, 2018 7:11 PM |
Thanks, r374, but what would you say are Zverev's best assets? From the little I've watched of him, I would guess that his major strength is that he has no major weakness. Is that it?
by Anonymous | reply 375 | July 5, 2018 7:18 PM |
Zverev is the best of those born after 1995 clearly. At majors, however, he gets nervous and will just start pushing the ball over the net. Also his volleying is atrocious. But he has a great serve and moves very well for some 6'6.
by Anonymous | reply 376 | July 5, 2018 7:24 PM |

To be fair Van Uytvanck seemed on the verge of a good victory against a top player in recent tournaments. I hope Muguruza realize that being a diva and not working hard to get those results won't pay in the long run. She could be the dominant player but seems to enjoy too much being on the limelight to work hard to get it.
Zverev was saved by the bell. He seems unable to play well on decisive moments and unless he improve that he will be Slamless for a long long time

Congrats to the dumbass that scheduled Muguruza, the defending champion, fifth on court 2. Mission accomplished. Fuckers! Did Katrina Adams have something to do with that to help Serena even more? This would NEVER EVER be done to her. Playing someone on grass with a big serve and unorthodox ground game is difficult enough when you can see the ball clearly. Introduce low light and it's a recipe for disaster. Wimbledon is such a lame tournament.
Of course Serena is given ideal scheduling tomorrow - 2nd on center (just as the 25th seed deserves). Again, fuckers! I hope she gets a thorough beatdown.

by Anonymous | reply 408 | July 5, 2018 8:45 PM |
I want Serena to keep winning Majors so that she can beat Margaret Court's record of 24. Of course, Court's record is bullshit because people didn't care about the Aussie Open then but, still, anything to make that vile homophobe increasingly irrelevant is fine by me.
by Anonymous | reply 409 | July 5, 2018 8:45 PM |

Anyway here is article about her

For [R362], yes he is a genuinely nice guy and very laid-back off court. I do remember though that one of his entourage, can't remember if it was his father or agent, was a complete asshole. This was about six years ago.

by Anonymous | reply 424 | July 6, 2018 8:27 AM |
r417, the reason Alison has not gotten major press is that a lesbian on the WTA Tour is not news. Martina, Amelie, and many others broke that ground. Alison has also only gotten past the third round in the French Open.
Let's hope she goes all the way.
by Anonymous | reply 425 | July 6, 2018 9:02 AM |
I wish Zverev and Melo would just come out as a couple already.
by Anonymous | reply 426 | July 6, 2018 9:13 AM |
Keys is tanking already. It seems there will be a total random winner this time unless something changes
by Anonymous | reply 427 | July 6, 2018 11:07 AM |
Keys is at 8 straight games lost now. Only two to go, Maddy!
by Anonymous | reply 428 | July 6, 2018 11:31 AM |

My bets are that she will lose her serve now
by Anonymous | reply 431 | July 6, 2018 11:43 AM |
Keys will win. Rodina had 4 breaks points to go for 5/0 up but she was not able to do that . Now she has become tentative and Keys has become aggressive and took one break back.
Rodina is going to loose the match
by Anonymous | reply 432 | July 6, 2018 11:43 AM |
I was wrong. Maybe she have a chance after all. This is the kind of match that if she ends winning can make her more confident
by Anonymous | reply 433 | July 6, 2018 11:45 AM |
Talk about a seesaw match! How many more changes in momentum will we see in Keys v. Rodina?
by Anonymous | reply 434 | July 6, 2018 11:53 AM |
Madison won the second. The third is a mystery, Madison should won easily because Rodina must be blaming herself for her faliure but it won't be the first time that the one who should won end tanking. Hopefully Madison will win because Wimbledon right now can't afford more favourites losing
by Anonymous | reply 435 | July 6, 2018 12:08 PM |
Fritz looks horrible today. Did he not get any sleep last night. I hope he can pull it together in the 5th.

Zverev probably got a good rest last night instead of being up at midnight liking IG post of half naked Russian models like 2 days ago
by Anonymous | reply 437 | July 6, 2018 12:42 PM |
Keys somehow managed to break herself to go down 4-5 in the 3rd set.
by Anonymous | reply 438 | July 6, 2018 12:47 PM |
And Rodina serves for match (not that it matters that much given the big number of breaks). but it shows that Madison is not really on the verge of breaking as a big player. She had her oportunities in the past and tanked. Right now the wta is without a solid dominant player, but a player like Keys would never win a GS in the 90's where there were a bunch of mentally strong players. She has big weapons but she doesn't know how to use them properly
by Anonymous | reply 439 | July 6, 2018 12:49 PM |
Shit. Hand the trophy to Serena right now. No one in her way. Lucky bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 440 | July 6, 2018 12:51 PM |
She is not a lucky bitch, she is a champion who has no fault in being surrounded by peasants. Since Justine Henin retired she is simply unchallenged. Yes there are a bunch of player that can defeat Serena but they are not consistent enough and she knows it. I think there's the main reason she didn't retire, she knows that sooner or later she will win another GS because the rest are not as mentally strong as she is

I think Serena will retire after she wins her 25th GS , unequivocally surpassing Margaret Court.
by Anonymous | reply 507 | July 6, 2018 5:40 PM |
Bartoli is one to talk. She got lucky at Wimbledon 5 years ago when all the favorites flopped. She had nice groundstrokes and she and her father carefully studied Seles' angles strategy. It's hypocritical when she talks of someone else's work ethic though when she was fat for her entire career, only briefly losing the weight after she retired. She and her quack doctor daddy believed that being fat made her more powerful than if she were to be fit. That's BS. Technique matters. Look at little Cibulkova. She's no more than 5'2 and hits harder than half of the top 50 players who are taller than her.
Bartoli is right that Monfils and so far Kyrgios have wasted their talent though. Both should win multiple majors but lose focus and don't train the hardest off court. It just doesn't look right coming from Bartoli.
As for Nick, he is wildly immature but he's not evil. He's involved in charity. I enjoy his game and fun-loving demeanor.
by Anonymous | reply 509 | July 6, 2018 5:56 PM |
R473: By the time Kyrgios decide to stop being an idiot it'll be too late. He seems destined to be the new Gulbis, a lot of talent wasted in the lack of work ethics. He will defeat top players but unless he really changes he'll never won a GS.
I don't get the Bartoli's hate, she was an amazing player to watch, always entertaining, always giving her all, and she generated amazing shots. And in this case she is totally right, Gael and Nick are wasting their talent. I think it's just too late for Gael, but Nick could change and become a champion (he is still very young). Maybe Bartoli was never the fittest player but she was a player that never gave up, sometimes Monfils and Kyrgios attitude on court is despicable, like they don't care at all if they won or not
by Anonymous | reply 510 | July 6, 2018 6:24 PM |
I don't remember Bartoli being criticised for a lack of fitness when she was playing. She was always slightly larger than the average player but she was known for the amount of effort she put into her (unusual) training regime.
by Anonymous | reply 511 | July 6, 2018 6:37 PM |
sometimes Bartoli would be exhausted during a long match, especially if it was a hot day. She also used to get leg injuries often which was no doubt related to carrying the extra weight
by Anonymous | reply 512 | July 6, 2018 6:42 PM |
[quote] I don't remember Bartoli being criticised for a lack of fitness when she was playing.
She was here on DL.
by Anonymous | reply 513 | July 6, 2018 6:44 PM |
I don't think her size had to do with lack of work ethic, it's likely she had issues with disordered eating already during her career, they just became more obvious when she had retired.
by Anonymous | reply 514 | July 6, 2018 6:49 PM |
plenty of commentators criticized her excess weight.
Also Bartoli was no angel during her playing days. She had her share of feuds. From the French Tennis Federation to Tatiana Golovin to Jelena Jankovic to others...and Marion hated to be criticized herself. I forget who it was but she responded once to a commentator who said she needed to get fitter
by Anonymous | reply 515 | July 6, 2018 6:49 PM |
Weight and eating are a part of fitness. For a pro athlete to be fat is not a good thing. Taylor Townsend is definitely holding herself back by not being fitter. Nalbandian and pre-thin Fish held themselves back too. With the amount of calories they burn from training and playing matches, I can't imagine what Marion must have eaten to stay so big on tour
by Anonymous | reply 516 | July 6, 2018 6:50 PM |
Her post-career eating habits obviously have something wrong with them but it's entirely possible for high-level athletes to be a bit larger than normal. They don't necessarily have to be eating a lot, they just need to be eating the wrong stuff. Nalbandian is a good example in the post above. Serena has never been 'slim', even at her fittest.
There are many players out there who'd happily lose a limb to have had the career Bartoli had. She was a bit unconventional but she was also pretty successful against some of the strongest competition in the Open Era.
by Anonymous | reply 517 | July 6, 2018 6:56 PM |
Monfils has suffered from many injuries, not unlike Del Potro. His training regimen is just fine, R509. He does occasionally go on court walkabouts, very different from the spoiled brat tanks of the Kyrgios/Tomic variety.
by Anonymous | reply 518 | July 6, 2018 6:59 PM |
The problem with Monfils is not his shape, he always was very thin. It's his attitude, i remember an US Open semifinal where he was booed by the crowd because his attitude sucked big time. It's like he just doesn't care and he is not even smark enough to hide it
by Anonymous | reply 519 | July 6, 2018 7:04 PM |

Congrats to McDonald, great attitude on the court and cute to boot. He and Tiafoe are the sorts of Americans who can stem the deplorable tide.

R523: I don't think Zverev and Kyrgios are comparable.. Zverev can be cocky for sure and sometimes comes accross a little arrogant but he never screamed Khokinakis fucked your girlfriend in the middle of a match, or let himself go just to lose the match faster. Zverev remind me of the William sisters when they started to play, very happy to know themself and with a big ego, but that pass with time. Kyrgios on the other hand has a big attitude problem on court and out of court, wich is a pity because he is very talented and i don't think he is a bad guy either

Melo/Kubot already out in Double. They will free fall in the ranking. Maybe also out of top 10

Kyrgios has said that he thinks entertaining people is more important than winning
by Anonymous | reply 536 | July 6, 2018 8:31 PM |
R534: Exactly, Zverev can be bratty (he can be very charming in interviews too) but he knows what he wants and he wants to be a top player. He is number three and has a bunch of big titles for something. And with time maybe he even lose the bratty attitude on court (the cockiness on interviews will be history with a little time and more maturity) Gulbis or Kyrgios had everything to be top players, but they just don't care to make the effort. They earn enough money to have a good life and that's all. Given that they are talented from time to time they score a big win but never materialize all their potential.

Round three and the women's tournament is in shambles.
by Anonymous | reply 538 | July 6, 2018 8:59 PM |
And yet the younger Zverev has only made it to one GS fourth round and one GS quarter, which puts him well below any of the greats and their GS records by his age. Seems like it will still be a while until we see the next great tennis champion on the horizon.
by Anonymous | reply 539 | July 6, 2018 9:07 PM |
R533 And she's going to make her first semifinal too, because the raging cunt is back and will get the easiest draw in modern era slam history. Just pencil the pathetic Carla Suarez Navarro into the final now!
by Anonymous | reply 540 | July 6, 2018 9:35 PM |
Yes, but at his age Roger Federer didn't won a GS yet while Llyton Hewitt (of the same age) was doing way better, and look now who had the better career. The truth is Zverev is tanking at GS, but it's the only thing he is failing, he has three Master 1000 wich is way more than the usual 21 yo had. Anyway, if people expect someone like Federer/Nadal/Djokovic to appear i think they'll be highly dissapointed. People with more than 10 Gs are a rarity, and those three have a very long career as top players. We have plenty of examples of top players who were dominant for a while to just dissapear from being contenders (Jim Courier) to number ones unable to win a GS (Marcelo Ríos), to a whole bunch of number ones unable to dominate the circuit even for a while Safin/Ferrero/Ríos. I think people don't get enough credit to Djokovic, the guy had the bad luck of competing against two of the best ever, and he was able to rise himself from top player to dominant player
by Anonymous | reply 541 | July 6, 2018 9:41 PM |
Even late GS bloomer Federer had four 4th rounds and two quarters under his belt at the same age. Prediction is that A. Zverev will do about as well as Kafelnikov, who was at roughly the same level of achievement at Zverev's age.

I'm really interested in Khachanov vs. Tiafoe tomorrow. A 3rd round battle of promising young guns.
by Anonymous | reply 543 | July 6, 2018 10:25 PM |
Same here--Tiafoe v. Khachanov, Nishikori v. Kyrgios, and Osaka v. Kerber look to be the most interesting of tomorrow's matches.

I'd love to see Osaka make a major breakthrough. Dont if she'll be able to keep it together.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | July 6, 2018 10:47 PM |
R542 You're overlooking the fact that Zverev is a taller, more powerful player with a variety of weapons Kafelnikov never possessed. Once Fed, Nadal, and Djokovic are gone he'll have plenty of opportunities to win slams. Good timing for his career.
by Anonymous | reply 546 | July 6, 2018 10:49 PM |
R545 Kerber is probably the most difficult opponent from the top half that she could be facing, so good luck to her. Will defense or offense win the day?
by Anonymous | reply 547 | July 6, 2018 10:53 PM |
R547 Smart offense, which is difficult against Kerber cause at her best she is like a wall.

Wouldn't it be spectacular sweet, sweet justice if Cibulkova got to the final and gave Serena a much deserved drubbing? Too bad that will never happen. Sigh.
by Anonymous | reply 551 | July 6, 2018 11:04 PM |
R546, I was comparing likely impact, not arsenals. Maybe Zverev will pull it together and get his petulant head out of his ass. We'll see. Nadal and Djokovic will probably be around for another 3 or 4 years, and there are already players younger than Zverev breathing down his neck: Tsitsipas, Rublev, Tiafoe, Shapovalov, de Minaur, Mmoh, Moutet. And Auger-Aliassime seems to have what it takes to overtake and surpass him.
by Anonymous | reply 552 | July 6, 2018 11:42 PM |
How much longer does Federer most likely have? 3 years?
by Anonymous | reply 553 | July 6, 2018 11:45 PM |
R552 Yes, that's why all of those you named are close to the top of tennis like Zverev. He's No.3 in the world! Only Shapovalov is in the top 30.
That arsenal is why he's having and will continue to have an impact. And I think any petulance stems from personal expectation (like Fed early on) rather than general dickishness (like Kyrgios/Tomic).
by Anonymous | reply 554 | July 7, 2018 12:09 AM |
Apples and oranges, you're ignoring my point, R554. Zverev wasn't even in the top 50 when he was some of these players' ages. The point is that they're geared to overtake him as they continue to develop, and some of them are higher ranked than he was at their age.
I have to differ with you on the dickishness opinion, unless you think calling an umpire "a fucking moron" and yelling out "this is my fucking court" after winning a match make him Mr. Congeniality.
by Anonymous | reply 555 | July 7, 2018 12:25 AM |
Watching Zverev-Fritz today, you can see that currently Fritz is a lesser version of Zverev. They both have great backhands and first serves. Both of their forehands can go off. Zverev is fitter (you can see that just by looking at them) and moves better. Fritz is going to have to get fitter and improve his volleys but he looked good in parts of their match.

R552: Sorry but no. None of the youngsters have a career like Zverev right now, not even close. He had a better career than Shapovalov or Tsitsipas at their ages (not that it matters, Djokovic started to show his true potential at 24) and he has a better career (by far) than nobody of his age or even slightly older. He has two victories against Federer, one of them on grass, he was able to destroy Nadal in the second set on Rome (and Rafa was lucky with the rain). That means he will become a multiSlam winner? of course not. But right now he is doing well better than any of the rest and he is competitive against anyone. The only thing lacking is his results at GS. Let's be honest, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray won't be a factor much longer. Nadal won't reach Federer's age being a top player (his body and game style won't let him, and in fact he is doing way better than expected). Of course Zverev has a few contenders about his age, but we don't know right who of the bunch will be a Slam winner and who will ocupy the place of Berdych or Dimitrov, or even we could end in an era with multiple GS winners
by Anonymous | reply 570 | July 7, 2018 10:43 AM |
R555: Zverev was top 20 with 19 yo, Tsitsipas is 35 and he is on the verge of 30, Shapovalov is 25 at 19. All of them are doing well but Zverev has big titles under his belt. Ayway, not everybody develops at the same age. Federer had big results very young but in terms of high ranking and big titles he was not that precocious. Nadal won GS young because he was very dominant on clay since the beginning of his career. And the comparision between Hewitt and Federer is very pertinent, both the same age, Lleyton way more precocious, Federer with a way better career
by Anonymous | reply 571 | July 7, 2018 10:51 AM |
Tsitsipas is on the verge of 20 not 30

Paire has some anger issues. Good for AVU. Her results showed that she was on the verge of getting far on the draws but she kept being defeated by higher ranking players on tight matches. Defeating Muguruza gave her some needed confidence (Her victory against Kontaveitt was clear)

by Anonymous | reply 582 | July 7, 2018 1:10 PM |
R570/R571, that's my point. Zverev so far has not performed even remotely close to what the #3 ranked player should be accomplishing in the majors. One quarter and one 4th round? Either he still lacks the wherewithal mentally to break through at the GS level, or he's been beset by a lot of bad luck. I believe that it's the former. And he's still a dick. And when did I say that any of his younger challengers has exceeded where Zverev is now?
by Anonymous | reply 583 | July 7, 2018 1:27 PM |
This Hsieh chick is surprisingly tricky. Impressive end to set 2.
by Anonymous | reply 584 | July 7, 2018 1:28 PM |
De Miñaur is simply too green to even be a slight challenge
by Anonymous | reply 585 | July 7, 2018 1:30 PM |
R583 " and there are already players younger than Zverev breathing down his neck: Tsitsipas, Rublev, Tiafoe, Shapovalov, de Minaur, Mmoh, Moutet. And Auger-Aliassime seems to have what it takes to overtake and surpass him. " Wich is simply not true, none of them have the results Zverev has wich of course doesn't mean they won't in a near future.
And Auger-Alliassime (like Nicola Kuhn) seem amazing prospects, but they are not even on the pro tour so we don't know if they will translate that talent (there are plenty of examples of amazing juniors that never achieve their potential).
And yes, Zverev is cocky and bratty, and he has a big ego, but i'm not even sure if he is the most bratty of the bunch of next gen players. It's not unusual that kind of behaviour at a young age (a lot of juniors are very aggressive on their behaviour on court even when they are friendly outside court), Federer himself was not exactly the classy player he become after a couple of years when he started to play pro tour
by Anonymous | reply 586 | July 7, 2018 1:36 PM |
[quote]Federer himself was not exactly the classy player he become after a couple of years...
Ummm, when exactly did Federer become a classy player?
by Anonymous | reply 587 | July 7, 2018 1:41 PM |
And the reason why Zverev is an underachiever on GS is a combination of factors, too pressure, not dealing well with decisive moments, some bad luck (some of his defeats were in tight matches) and specially not being focused on early rounds and losing too much energy in the first rounds matches. I remember Thomas Muster who was an incredible clay courter tanking on Roland Garros year after year just because first rounds matches complicated a lot and he went to the final rounds exhausted (and he suffered a couple of bad early loses too).
Anyway, reaching the last rounds is good but not an indication of when you are going to get your first GS. Ferrero did very well at Roland Garros since the beginning of his career but getting the title was an uphill battle. And Robredo was reaching Qtr as a teenager but never went further than that
by Anonymous | reply 588 | July 7, 2018 1:43 PM |
R587: Federer has a very (very very very) clean image and his behaviour on court is (usually) very good. Of course Federer and Nadal seem the kind of people who can throw shade and had their angry moment without people bashing them (or even justify them) And Federer is the kind of guy who doesn't seem to have an opinion on anything (wich serves him well, because having an opinion can make you lose sponsors)
by Anonymous | reply 589 | July 7, 2018 1:46 PM |
You infer something other than what I implied by "breathing down his neck", R586. I meant that they're looking at him as the player to beat among their generation. I'm not disputing whether they've reached his level. Obviously they haven't, as the rankings and ATP results substantiate. But the anomaly and exception is the majors. That's been Zverev's Achilles heel, along with his temper and arrogance.
by Anonymous | reply 590 | July 7, 2018 1:46 PM |
Tsipitas to me could end up being the best not that I’ve seen a lot of him. His mentality seems much more relaxed and sure of himself (in a more humble way) whereas Alex and Denis, etc have all the pressure, flash, attention and they seem to feel uncomfortable with it (all while trying to cover it up with a slight arrogance).
I took Chris McEndry’s advice and watched one of Stefanos’ travel vlogs. He’s very down to earth - maybe a bit nerdy and a loner - but very mature seeming as well.
