First of all, gender is NOT binary. 1 out of 100 children is born with some degree of intersex. This might manifest as actual sets of both male and female genitalia (formerly called hermaphroditism) to having a penis outwardly but also ovaries. A person might be born with male genitalia but have XX chromosomes. In some cases, hormones of the outward appearance will not kick in at puberty and so sexual differentiation we normally see then will not appear. While I agree that children should not undergo surgery before puberty, the fact is that many children are "corrected" at, or shortly after birth to conform to a binary sexual gender. (Someone with sexual characteristics of both sexes will be arbitrarily assigned a sex by an attending doctor and surgery will conform that child to his/her notion, often without notifying the parents). It is thought that up to a third of people who strongly feel that they are in the wrong sex have some intersex aspect that was unnoticed at birth, or was "corrected" to the wrong sex. Moreover, people who are fully hermaphroditic generally do not feel that they need "correction". Their natural sex is neither male nor female. It is weird and hard for those of us hard-wired male or female to understand or to accept. The uninformed people on DL who keep loudly proclaiming that there are only two sexes need to educate themselves in the science of genetics, because frankly, they do not know what they are talking about.

The VAST majority of gay men (and gay women) have no desire to be transitioned to the other sex. They like the genitalia they were born with and know how to use it to obtain sexual pleasure. Others enjoy the idea of being able to pretend for short periods of time that they are the other sex, but have no desire to give up their sexual equipment or make the situation permanent.

Transgender people are different. They feel (and when interviewed almost always say) that they NEVER felt that the gender they were born into matches what they have felt about themselves inside. But such people are a VERY small minority. They are getting a lot of attention just now because people (both gay and straight) are both horrified and intrigued by the idea of a whole group of people out there who lead such different lives.

I do agree that their struggles and challenges are quite different from those of gay men and lesbians, and when they piggyback on the legislative and societal progress that gay people have made over the past 50 years, it muddies the water a bit. It's already a challenge for straight people to imagine how gay people can feel desire for the same sex. Trans people have an entirely different set of issues which neither gay nor straight people can understand very well. For instance, it's very confusing when a man will transition to a woman and then declares that he's only attracted to women (therefore, now a lesbian). There are times when a very specific trans issue (such as bathroom of choice) will trigger straight people. This would not be an issue for gay people, who use the bathroom that matches their sexual equipment. However, if truth be known, straight people would be horrified if they knew often they were being checked out by gay people in bathrooms and communal showers.

I am a mental health professional with no experience with treating any trans issues myself. However, 2-3 years ago I did attend a talk by the head of the Department of Psychiaty at a leading Dallas hospital. He is a gay man and very well regarded in the medical community.

Anyway, he told us about an interesting case of a teen boy who thought he might be trans so they brought him to this psychiatrist for treatment. The parents explained what was going on, and the doctor said that he was sorry he didn’t think he would be the right fit as their son’s psychiatrist. He was very well-versed in LGB issues, but felt he would be lying if he said he had any real experience dealing with trans issues.

The parents responded by saying something like, “Well, actually, that’s exactly why we’ve come to you. We don’t care if our son is gay. We don’t care if our son is trans. What we do care about is that our son explores his sexuality and figures out who he is and who he wants to be. We think you can help him do this.” Apparently they had explored many options for treatment with people with “experience with trans issues” and they were concerned about how many of these professionals seemed to just automatically put these kids that thought they might be trans on a conveyor belt to reassignment surgery.

The doctor was struck by what the parents were saying and decided to take the their son as a patient. The psychiatrist shared this story in order to advocate for mental health professionals to take a conservative approach regarding trans issues, because there’s SO much we still don’t know about how reassignment surgeries, messing with a child’s hormones, etc. will really play out in the end. At the time of the talk the kid hadn’t resolved his issues completely yet, but it seemed like he had found the perfect place for him to explore all the possibilities (living as a gay man, living as a transgender woman, etc.) and figure it out.

R220, that is bad news about menopause. I am turning 40. An older coworker warned me that menopause is a bitch (because I used to complain a lot about my period).

Over the past couple years my period has slowed dramatically. I actually appreciate that because like many women, I don't enjoy getting my period. But, it has made me think menopause is nigh although I am pretty young. So, how bad is it? Nothing will prepare me but I'd still like to know. Those born as girls who have an abnormality of no vagina (vaginal atresia/vaginal agenesis) sometimes have problems with urination. It probably is the same for m2f; some may still urinate just fine, some may have problems if their “neo vag” closes.

I agree, 17 is too young. I would not consent to my child undergoing this surgery at this age (it's illegal where I live anyway) , and I would not consent to them taking puberty blockers, cross sex hormones, or a girl wearing a breast binder, or any other therapy that altered a physically healthy body.

Well I hate to bring this up, but the first successful uterus transplants have been done, and successfully I might add. The procedure was developed as a treatment for women born without a uterus. She has ovaries, and vagina and everything else is normal, but she lacks a uterus. Apparently not all that uncommon. In addition, there are also women who have had hysterectomies due to fibroids, or cancer, or accident. So it is totally legitimate for them to have developed the procedure. But of course, Trans women are glomming on to it as a way of making themselves "whole women".

The surgery is not meant to provide a woman with a womb throughout her lifespan, only to give her the ability to bear her own children. After caesarean delivery, the uterus is removed.

We all know this means we can look forward to the first baby born to a trans mother in a very literal sense.

I’m a lesbian and was a total tomboy as a kid. The other big tomboy in my school is a soccer coach and happily married to her wife. I have no doubt whatsoever that we both would have been transed in the modern world. It’s horrifying. And unlike years ago when only people who really were committed to this route followed it, it’s now encouraged for all kinds of gender non-conformance. I’ve noticed trans men of my acquaintance tend to look pretty good on the early days of T (if you ignore most of them just are not the same height as even a shorter guy) but after a few years they start losing their hair and starting to look really much older than their years on the T. Anecdotal sure but I fear for where we will be in five-ten years’ time when lots more kids go the Jazz route.

The response to those videos or articles from some in the trans community is that those who detransition do so because society is transphobic and detranstion-ers caved in the face of such intolerance.

There are people out there who are dealing with horrible endocrine or hormonal disorders. And others who were born with birth defects and others who suffered from losing limbs etc to cancer or injury and these people are mutilating and screwing with perfectly healthy, functioning bodies.
