It's a significant part because the role of Marty is the spouse of the lead, and he was involved in the case the film is built around. Yes, I can see how they might think that - Marty is largely a gender-switched version of a supportive wife role. But the male acting races always have a much larger and richer field of contenders to narrow down than the female ones - the competition is almost always fiercer even in weak years. Honestly, I liked the script but once the legal stuff really kicks in I found it to drag a bit - it will be interesting to see the finished product.
