Harry's and Sparkle's Wedding - Thread FIVE !!!!!!!!!

Amal is friends with Meaghan. Apparently, it was her recommends for a makeup person and hair person out of Hollywood. She also helped advise on the dress.
Victoria Beckham looks as if she has one of those dark clouds that constantly floats above her head. She is just constantly pissy.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | May 19, 2018 11:11 PM |
Was Beckham wearing the same outfit she wore to Will & Kate’s wedding? It looked like it.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 19, 2018 11:13 PM |
I really don’t understand why Meghan’s hair was sticking out like a haystack. Someone said, and I agree, that she looked like she’d just finished a class at SoulCycle.
Her makeup was lovely, though. Very fresh and pretty; not overdone the way Kate’s tends to be.

R9 there's rules and formats to follow. And I created three of the threads in an attempt to keep the "Markle is Antichrist" trolls from making them with their bad energy and "funny" quips.

I missed a lot of the TV coverage because I had a family college graduation to attend this morning. I heard most of the CNN coverage via satellite car radio.
The music sounded lovely, and while I agree that the Rev from Chicago may have gone on too long, and he lost me about the science of the Iron Age and such, overall I thought his address was a great, uplifting and challenging one, and certainly a different homily than most in that chapel had ever heard
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 19, 2018 11:47 PM |
r10 is just pissy because she didn't get to create this thread as well.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 19, 2018 11:48 PM |
. . . Anyyyyywaaays, Kate is royally (!) threaten by the attention the new Duchess of Sussex has achieved.
During the wedding, Kate had blatantly avoided eye contact with the newest Duchess and deliberately avoided looking at her during the entire ceremony.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 19, 2018 11:51 PM |
I can only add what I picked up from the various gossip columns, and that is: Harry, LOOK OUT! tHEY SEEM TO INDICATE SHE IS A PUBLICITY HOUND AND ENJOYS THE SPOTLIGHT! Also, Harry might not be 100% str8! Supposedly when he was in Afghanistan, he was caught licking the tit of one of his fellow troopers ( of course, it could have done in a playful way--just horsing around?) Others hinted he is bi--so who to believe? Maybe some of you posters could put all these rumors to rest with info to contradict the gay rumors? [BTW: I think he's hot and don't mind if he iis a FOD!]
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 19, 2018 11:51 PM |
God I hope Meghan loses interest in those vapid hollywood people that showed up at the wedding. I personally don't like to see hollywood interacting with British aristocracy and royalty.
Not that one group is any better than the other. It's sort of like not wanting the gravy on your plate to touch your green beans...

Congratulations to Their Royal Highnesses.

Amal is not friends with Markle. The service person they have in common absolutely denied being some sort of go between. This is how Markle operates though - befriends some third party, conveniently a hair stylist, facialist, or whatever, to get access to the star. But in this case, it was just bullshit by Meghan Markle. They have no relationship. What she's got here in star power are people who want publicity. Clooney and his beard, Oprah and her self-importance and pseudo significance. I'm sure all of the "stars" who attended saw this as an opportunity to meet and get access to members of the royal family.

Now that they're married, what would a typical conversation be between them?
H: So we got married, right.
M: yes, and I made sure everyone saw that I knew I looked beautiful.
H: that preacher was a bit loud, wasn't he?
M: yes, but I made sure everyone saw that I knew I looked like I was interested in what he said.
H: Gran tells me it went on a bit long.
M: yes, but I made sure everyone saw that I knew I made you look like you're in love with me.
H: Did Cressida call, oops, I meant did my brother William call?
M: yes, but I made sure that everyone saw A+ listers there because I'm that important.
H: were my Uncle Edward and my Aunt Sophie in the castle?
M: who? I smiled for all the cameras to make sure they knew i won today.

The secondary British royals, of whom Harry is a member and sinking rapidly, have always always been infatuated with Hollywood. Ditto the British aristocracy. In the 1920s and 1930s "stars" of America married into British nobility, including Adele Astaire and Kick Kennedy. Prince Margaret loved mingling with Hollywood stars, who tired of her having it both ways - getting freebies, but insisting on royal protocol even among non-Brits. Noel Coward could have (and maybe did) write a book about the intermingling of the theatre world, Hollywood, and British royals and aristocracy. Princess Diana was fascinated by Hollywood herself - had a crush on Richard Gere. Difference being in the past the royals and aristos who hung with Hollywood hung with the A list. Harry is hanging with the Z list, although the presence of a couple of A - listers at the wedding show that even when Hwood doesn't know the bride or groom, they'll show up for access and association with a royal. Mutual using is what's going on here. Edward whathisname (the guy who inherited from Queen Victoria) fucked plenty of Meghan Markles in his day. Didn't marry one, of course.
The actual sovereign and heirs are supposed to be above all that. Harry is just acting his part.
Margaret was once as celebrated - more so - than Harry. More beautiful than her sister, sexier, star-crossed, exciting, rebellious. Ended her life as a sad invalid who pre-deceased her own mother, and her looks were shot - and no one cared. Andrew's antics with Koo Stark were on every front page for weeks in the 1980s - huge scandal, what would the queen do, how would it end? Now he can fuck a teen-age girl and everybody yawns. Harry is on his way down. He himself has said he has a short window before it's all about Charlotte and George. People mistakenly thought he was looking forward to the time he took a back seat to them. They were wrong.

by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 20, 2018 1:35 AM |
Anyone who chooses to become an actress in Hollywood is an unstable, fame-whoring narcissist. And the path of the prior marriage is really indicative of who she is. Harry is clueless for marrying her. But he has issues of his own clearly. I assume everyone is just letting him do this knowing that a divorce is likely in the future. But it seems like the Royal Family almost needed to do this for a group catharsis of the stuffy old rules and protocol. Now the bar is so low, nothing they do can be unseemly.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 20, 2018 1:49 AM |
Think you're probably right, R46. Certainly I do not buy that Harry was "taken in." I think he is a royal fuck up, no pun intended, whose improved image over the past few years has been more PR than reality. He dated Markle without anyone knowing until less than a year ago, and by the time his family found out, he was in deep. I don't know how successful any marriage can be that was birthed in the notorious high end brothel, Soho house, but Harry belongs there as much as Meghan.

Sparkle's mother's 'Mother-of-the-Bride' attire was very . . . very . . . simple (plain/cheap), regardless of the 'Burberry' garment bag from which it came.
She should have pushed her Dreds up into an exquisite, raw-silk Phillip Tracey special creation, complemented by a Givenchy custom raw-silk swing-coat. over a custom-fitted raw-silk classic sleeveless sheath, with matching closed-toe stilettos, all 'sapphire blue' (ala Princess Diana's engagement ring).
Furthermore, Prince Harry and Sparkle should have sprung for especially lovely diamond earrings (4.0 carat tw), set in platinum., for her to wear in commemoration of her importance to the occasion.

How does the mother go back to her scraping by existence? A weird situation when the daughter is now part of a billionaires family and she is barely paying her bills. Never mind the father. At some point, the desperation for money will too easily lead to a seemingly innocuous tabloids payoff unless Meghan figures out how to help support them. If she doesn’t support them, it shows she’s an unemotional egocentric ingrate out for herself. This does not end well.

Harry should give money monthly to help her parents take care of bills etc. a few thousand a month, that is not unreasonable. He is a millionaire. worth about 40 million. If he loves her, then he should help take care of her family.

You could tell that Oprah and the Clooneys were disappointed that the guest list wasn't A-list by their standards. Oprah looked especially pissed off when she got a good look around the church and then they seated her enormous rear end on a folding chair.

It seems perfectly reasonable that a person who made their living as an actress and a celebrity briefcase holder would invite other actors, actresses & celebrities to her wedding so not sure what Piers is nattering about.
I think what we see with Meghan is the difference between a 25 year old bride and a 36 year old bride on her second marriage. Meghan at her age has probably run out of fucks to give on who she should or shouldn't invite as far as relatives is concerned. If she doesn't get along with any of her crazy relatives, she's just not going to bother inviting them to her wedding.
I think they know that Harry doesn't really have a path to the throne now that he's sixth in line, so the pressure to do things a certain way while still there, is just not the same as if he was William. I think Meghan & Harry are going to shake up the monarchy a little bit and their wedding was a preview to all that. I can see her trying to emulate someone like Amal and getting involved in some big human rights work. I think both of them may surprise us.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 20, 2018 3:52 AM |

It's interesting that those who have commented about mother of the bride Doria being made to sit all by herself did not notice that the seat she occupied made it so that whenever the camera was on Meghan, her mother also appeared in the shot over her left shoulder. So any time we saw Meghan, we also saw her mother. In the same fashion, Prince Charles was in the frame whenever we saw Harry, in single coverage.
I'm guessing that was deliberate.
Also I'm thinking that Doria was not sad but overwhelmed. I can't imagine having to tackle all that for the first time in my life with cameras broadcasting all over the world pointed at me. She must have felt slightly out of her body.

That would be extremely problematic. The British people like their monarchy wearing hats and cutting ribbons. So does the British government. No member of the Royal Family can take positions that have political overtones or conflict with government policy. It simply won't be allowed to happen. Diana, ironically, was on a collision course with the politicians following the landmines work. But Diana had the real power of immense popularity... she was harder to mess with. Still, the pressure on her would have been enormous.
Meagain does not have the popularity with people to step far over the line.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | May 20, 2018 4:28 AM |
r86. She will have that power soon enough. One of the news shows showed a bunch of "man on the street" interviews, and many people were calling her the new people's princess. One even suggested she was the "reincarnation" of Diana. These people have been desperate for someone to fill the gap left by Diana. Meghan has the fake huggy part down, and she loves fashion. The press will love covering her, and the people will eat it up. She'll try to leverage her popularity with Charles. This could be a sore spot with him, though, due to how Diana eclipsed him.

It has been repeated throughout the day on cable and has now pre-empted my weekly dose of the dishy Rupert Penry-Jones (damn you channel 21!).
Here are my takeaways:
• They really had a beautiful day. Nothing beats a warm spring day in the English countryside.
• Why wasn’t Meghan’s mother seated in the first pew on the Bride’s Side? It looked odd, Harry’s father, stepmother, etc. were all in the first pew on the Groom’s Side, and there was poor Doria practically hidden by ornate woodwork in the second pew. Who were the crowd in the first pew?
• Loved QEII’s coat and hat combo - even at 92, she never lets the side down. DoE was walking pretty spryly at almost 97 having just had hip replacement. I actually thought he’d be using a cane. But no - old Phil was walking unaided, and still ramrod straight. Talk about the “Iron Duke”!
• Did everyone catch DL fav, the Queen’s cousin Princess Alexandra? Looking fab as ever in what looked like pink.
• Do Anglicans not have a Wedding Mass, just a Ceremony?
• Did Mark Tindall have his nose fixed? He was looking hot - as was his brother-in-law Peter. Yum for both. Zara looked stunning too. Bet she and the brother are happy the Phillips genes won out over the Windsor ones!
• I really like it when the congregation sings along with the hymns in church. Was happy to see when the camera panned everyone singing along.
• I gather Prince Charles was the lead on the musical selections. He also picked the gospel choir to preform during the services - he’s supposedly a vocal fan of gospel music, who knew?!
• The American Episcopal bishop getting all the attention was told he must keep his address to no more than 6 minutes. Not realizing just how orchestrated Royal events are, he didn’t pay much heed and went over double his allotted time. It was rather a rambling sermon once he went off script. Looks like more than a few were bemused, thus some smirks, giggles, and quiet chatting in the pews. He later apologized for going off script, running over.
• Did anyone think Meghan was all “hurry up and finish” during the gospel choir’s bits and the bishop’s address?
• The Duchess of Cambridge was in the back when Meghan arrived, how did she get to her seat so quick? Is there a side aisle or something she dashed up before Meghan started her walk?
• What I read seems to indicate the Queen, and Prince Charles paid for everything today personally, except for the security.
• The Beckhams - where to start! Victoria looks painfully thin. That dress was heinous - just a navy blue sack. Is she incapable of a smile? I’m thinking her teeth are spacing from lack of nutrition-or she’s just too weak with hunger. My friend thought she reminded him of Wednesday Addams lol. David looks like street trash - tatted neck, tatted hands and fingers. If his rant calling Downing Street officials “cunts” after he did not receive a knighthood wasn’t enough to guarantee he’s never getting one now, I’d like to think those trashtastic tattoos would. Same friend commented on David that he’s the hot ONS that you’d be embarrassed to tell your friends about.
• Sir Nicholas Soames being seat mates to David Beckham - another thing I’d never thought I’d see.
• All the actors, celebrities, etc. in attendance - a bit much, no? I get that Meghan is an actress and is bound to have friends who are, so yes, some would be expected, but come on - does she really know all of them? Are these the people she’s going to have over to Kensington post marriage? I kind of doubt it. Similar with Harry - a number of celebs and athletes are involved and support his charities so it’s expected they’d be invited, but the rest? Do other European Royals do the same at their weddings?
• Didn’t realize how bald Harry has gotten! One shot of him from behind I swore was William!
• Disappointed there were no “fuck off” hats on Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie this time.
• I’m sick of hearing the whole event referred to as “modern” and “progressive” ::eye roll::

Ok, I just watched it on PBS. Harry is totally in love with that girl. I don't think I've ever seen a groom look at a bride like that.
The preacher was awful. He wasn't even a good black preacher. I can't put my finger in it - maybe because he's Anglican and can't go full gospel. His speech was rambling and repetitive. Camilla had the luxury of having a gigantic hat she could cock so that you couldn't see her face as she laughed.
I was disappointed by Stand By Me. I don't think it was done well and I've never heard it sung with a choir just repeating Stand by Me over and over again. I thought we were going to hear some great gospel singing and it was meh. The English choir was so boring I don't even remember it.
I'm amazed at how many English people like this stuff. I thought it was Americans who like the royal family so much.
I thought the dresses were mostly really good. Sort of retro 50s/60s. Happy not to see combat boots and/or tattoos on any of the women,
I saw the Charles/Diana wedding because all of my patients were watching it in their rooms. I thought it was kind of simpering. All that Cinderella poofy fashion. Ugly. The fashion was much nicer this time and Hollywood could take a cue instead of wearing horrible crap and having deliberately messy hair and green or purple lipstick.

r90, who's going to stop her? The queen doesn't have the same energy she had when she faced off with Diana. And soon, Charles will be in charge. Will he run as tight a ship as the queen? He' won't let his siblings and their kids get away with anything, but will he put his foot down when it comes to William and Harry? I think he has problems with that already.
[R90], who's going to stop her?
OK, time for reality. This is a constitutional monarchy. It is subject to the advice of ministers in the government of the day. The advice of ministers is non negotiable. To ignore the advice of the government is to provoke a constitutional crisis and a constitutional crisis could endanger the monarchy itself. Nobody is going to wear that. King Charles certainly won't, at least for a daughter in law who wants to be a thinner, North Atlantic Oprah. If the ship's going to sink on his watch, it'll be over something that really matters to him. But what matters most to all of them is the survival of the monarchy.
So that's what's going to stop her: the instinct to preserve a system that's existed for a thousand years.

She couldn't invite her nasty trashy family. I sympathize with her there. You can't pick your family. Since she couldn't invite family, she chose friends to represent her "side." Oprah and the Clooneys are big charity/humanitarian people, which Meghan and Harry intend to be. They're planning to be non profit CEOs.

When the Archbishop asked if anyone knew of any legal reason that the couple could not be wed, it would have been nice if someone had stood and channelled the spirit of old Memnet and at least made the moral case against the divorced, former Catholic, performer.

QE2 will be a tough act to follow. Her heirs do not have her dedication, fortitude nor backbone. Charles is the product of a domineering, disappointed father and an absent, distant mother. Williams is the product of two emotionally crippled, unstable parents. Neither Charles nor William will be bounding up stairs, ramrod straight attending to public duties at age 90+. With this in mind, I do not see the institution of the Monarchy surviving the 21st century.

Meghan will tone done her opinions. She already has. Some P.R woman she used to work with gave an interview about how Meghan had refused to stay at a hotel owned by the Sultan of Brunei (reservations were already made) because he had harsh laws regarding gays and women in his country. He owns the Beverly Hills Hotel also (he's that guy). She made the woman make reservations somewhere else.
Cut to a year later and old Meg went with Harry to the Sultan's estate in England to watch a polo match
The Royal Family doesn't get involved in politics, but they sure are close friends with quite a few dictators. The media reports it's because the Queen and the dictators "love of horses" is what they have in common. I call bullshit on that. They may have that in common, but I don't doubt that the Queen has some shady investments with or that depend on these people. Because honestly, there are millions of people that love horses. there are thousands of mega wealthy people that have horses. Yet, the Queen and the rest of the royal family are friends with these dictators because of horses? Yeah, right. I don't care who the family is, you don't fuck with anyone who helps them earn money. Mystic Meg is going to shut her mouth if she knows whats good for her. Otherwise the knives will be out for her from the palaces and unflattering stories about her will begin to leak out to the tabloid journalists and onto the front pages (this happened to Sarah and Diana)

I've read posts on her of you guys going home at the holidays to homophobic and racist and Trump supporting family members, but when do you say enough is enough. The Queen and the Royal Family are "friends" with these cruel, oppressive Gulf despots because they have approximately 75 trillion quid invested in the UK. The Royals may officially not get involved in politics, but they most certainly do act according to political decisions.

R103. But Meghan wasn't gone hardly ever to return. She was an actress. She returned to LA often and probably saw her her mother. Meghan is a world away now. Her life will never be normal ever again. Meghan may want that, but that doesn't mean her mother wants to lose her daughter. But she has.

I'm not worried about Meghan's mother. Meghan can have her visit as often as she likes. She may not get to spend much time with her in the US but there's nothing to stop her from importing mom as often as she likes. I've read they're really close, likely Meghan's closest family.

I thought Harry looked like he was freaking out. He had a thousand yard stare much of the time. Other times he looked needy. At times he'd turn on the light like he'd flipped a switch, and out would come the beaming smile, but it would leave his eyes and then his face would flatten. Meghan was like a bridal bot. Perfect smile, dewy expression, blank behind the eyes. Just compare him and William. William was completely present and calm during his wedding, and making jokes with Catherine and with Catherine's father. Harry kept fading out.
As with this wedding, I thought in the Charles and Di wedding a lot of people carry a Cinderella fantasy (I don't, but I've learned many do) and projected like crazy. Diana and Charles bothered me from the day of the engagement because of the disconnect. The media gushed about how wonderful it was but to me they acted as if they didn't know each other (turns out I was right). I was a tween at the time, and inexperienced, but I was wondering about how awkward it would be when they were alone together or when they had to have sex. It was that bad. Never was validated, everybody was like "Oh she's perfect, oh it's a fairy tale!" Then the wedding. Charles was not handsome, and he was a stick, but people swooned like he was Prince Charming. Diana was very tall, flat butt, long legs, busty. She should have been in a dress like the one Meghan wore today - better executed of course, but that idea. Instead they put her in a dress that belonged on curvy ingenue. Overwhelming sleeves and neckline, poufy behind belief, long long train, long veil, but the actual dress looked too short, it didn't fit her bust line and wasn't tailored there, the waist was unfinished, and the skirt looked like an afterthought. It was like no effort was spent on the main event - the body of the dress - and all the focus went on the adornments - massive sleeves, massively adorned neckline, big train. She was NEVER that sort of ingenue. She needed a dress for a tall woman. Not a dress that looked like a giant in bridal drag.
I also thought Diana at 19-20 was exactly what she turned out to be - not 100% trustworthy, thinking something other than what she was saying, and naturally suspicious. The only time I changed my mind was the after the honeymoon pictures. They looked nice - she was tan and in brown tweed, they held hands, he kissed her hand, they looked for once as if they were comfortable being intimate. I figured they'd broken through, so to speak.
Actually, now, when I look back at video of her, for all of her dysfunction, she seems like fun. She seems funny, very direct when meeting the public, gets on with it, no drama, immediately makes it about the other person, and really sees the person in front of her and knows exactly how to make them comfortable without being showy about it, and she doesn't exude pity or signal compassion. Just really great at it, and comes off very smart. She really was good with the public. And kids. I bet George would have loved her.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | May 20, 2018 5:43 AM |
One more thing about Diana - for all of her rebellion, when she was in the royal role, she was really good at it. She was very natural in that spotlight. She was at ease with those people - if not the individuals themselves, then with people of that status. She was at ease in the environment - the aristocratic, nobility, royal thing. She could stand and chat comfortably and naturally while a million cameras were on her, be present, and notice what was in front of her - someone trying to catch her eye, somebody struggling with something they were holding. I saw some video of her escorting a very young William who needed to sign something - she set him up for it without being showy, then stepped back while he signed without hovering. It's too bad the actual family was a terrible fit for her because she was very very good at the job itself. Very good.

I really wish them well and can see that he really loves her. But there's something about MM that makes me think this isn't going to work. I think she pretended to be exactly what he wanted in a girlfriend/wife in order to hook him in the shortest time possible and when that fake persona wears off he'll be in for a surprise. I think Harry is in for a shocker, believing he's getting genuine when she is not genuine; she's manipulative, a performer.
Playing the game until she no longer feels the need which is when the drama will start, the rumors will fly, and then snowball from there. I also don't see her getting along with Kate and that she will be the source of the conflict, not Kate. I don't know anyone who knows her and have no inside scoop. Just a gut feel, my opinion. I wish them well but don't see this working out long term.

I think all of this is called the revenge of the 'Voc Ed.' people.
Oprah looked fat and dowdy...someone with so much money and mouth should be able to try to keep that weight off...Clooney's wife looked like she tumbled into jar of French's mustard..awful color...the Beckmans I won't even bother...Serna Wms forget it...I have always hated the Song Stand BY Me...when I heard it I said "well, that's it for me" and turned it off...what a mess..I really think the Queen said "F...k' it I'm done! " There's really no place to turn to...there real trouble in paradise...Why do people keep saying William and Harry were/are Hot? Maybe it's a British thing...

Whatever. That's still doesn't take away from what I said regarding Meg having to tone down her opinions on everything.
And there's one thing about having the Royals having to have thee dictators at required occasions/events at the palace, it's another to socialize with these dictators privately. And that's what the royal family does.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | May 20, 2018 6:38 AM |
I saw Pa Middleton look behind him at one point to be sure Carole was there. I think he's a typical dad - he is looking for where he can be helpful. They each sort of hold down a spot where they can survey as they go in and go forward and help where needed.
Harry - don't think he looks like he really loves her; he looks like disillusionment set in a long time ago but there's no turning back. He looked out of it and inside himself most of the time. Lips sealed tight, eyes lost, gone of a inside himself look. The problem is when we watch the broadcast the media is busy pumping out pr by the boatload, lies and spin. The historical significance of the first person who is African American or at least half marrying into the RF! That was a lot of it. Every talking point was the spin talking point. If someone is looking grim we're told they're looking proud. If someone is looking like they want to burst into tears for real we're told what an emotional moment it must be - the joy. It's a total who do you believe, us or your lying eyes experience.
So this will be interesting going forward, but maybe not as interesting as is hoped. One of the tarot readers on youtube said Harry and Meghan will start blowing off events and that sounds right to me. Unless he wants to get away from her - then he might show up a lot while she begs off. She looked bored out of her mind and her usual blank self at every engagement she attended where she couldn't put her hand to her heart, lift her eyebrows, and put out a saintly, compassionate expression. I think she was bored out of her mind most of the time. Can't blame her, but that's the job. Mostly I think many of Sparkle's fans have big expectations. They think she's going to outshine Kate (not possible - the impossibility is built into their respective status and the nature of their respective engagements AND their differing clothing budgets). They think she's going to be this great humanitarian force for real, instead of Miss Photo Op in distressed linens and a mixed cashmere pashmina hugging indigineous children of color. What she wants is to be famous, to be in charge, to have luxury, and live well. Not so different from Harry who loves the kudos of being Mr. Man of the People but doesn't mind the homeless swept from Windsor for his wedding and bails on some of his listening tours (his WORK) to go glamping or to party. So the way her fans expect to see Meghan is not how they're going to get to see Meghan. Meghan wants the fame and admiration of the baller world, not the "people" or her fans. And she wants stuff.

Did anyone catch the walk of Clooney's wife? What a phony. She's supposed to be this humanitarian lawyer who just happened to make a love connection with George Clooney, but she has the walk of a runway model or stripper. She's got a contrived slouch, and a very exagerated stride crossing one foot over the other so her hips sway, and then she semi-bounces. All the while keeping her arms very still - they don't move with her when she walks. That's a thing - I guess moving the arms doesn't make for as good a picture. It was a relief to see Kate Middleton walking and moving like a normal person, albeit an extremely poised one. No arched back like Jessica Mulroney, no bouncing runway walk like Amal Clooney. It was just so bizarre to see on film.

Watching it, !i felt sorry for Harry. I think he is really in love with/addicted to MM. She takes a sort of maternal/sexual role for him which he cannot resist. I think she wants to make it work, but ultimately she will not be able to because her nature is to be narcissistic and self-serving. The media scrutiny and continued rejection by the public will give her an excuse to bail. Her history supports this and for once, the public are right, that she is fake and untrustworthy.

It's been reported that Doria lives in the home that was owned by her father, and it's implied that the home is paid for.
Doria has conducted herself well but she also has pap pics floating around out there from the same agency the dad used. She's what, 61? Her home is paid for, her living expenses are probably modest. Not sure if she can collect some sort of retirement income or anything like that but she can do some discreet papping to make some money like Meghan did. It could definitely be enough to live off of.
The dad does indeed live in a slum. He had to be union, so he probably has a decent pension and at 73 SS to live off of. It should be more than enough to cover his living expenses in the dirt cheap area where he lives tax leins not withstanding.

Watched a recap of the day on CBS and they showed clips from Suits and she was about ten pounds heavier on the show and she looked much better. She had shapely legs, not pencil thin calves, and perky boobs that filled out a blouse. Looks like she lost more weight after the fitting. Her little itty bitty titties were LOST in that bodice. by Anonymous | reply 195 | May 20, 2018 6:36 PM |
I read that MM's mother is a psychotherapist and a Yoga instructor as well. That would help her through this but nothing can stop the pain of losing a daughter. She knows that they are half a world apart from CA to the UK, and in different time zones, and with all of Meg's "royal duties" she'll rarely hear from her daughter. They can't get together on a moments notice or even a day or two notice. No matter how old your child is the loss is still painful. Nothing like the physical death where you'll never see or hear from them again, but it's still painful to be so far apart with very limited contact. Maybe in a year or so MM and Harry can move her to the UK near them, especially when they have their first child, and pay for her expenses. That would be the right thing to do.

R213 that's probably all fabricated. Kate sent Meghan a box of her poo the day she moved there with a note that said, "To join my squad, eat this poo and take a photo of yourself doing so. And you'd better enjoy it, bitch!"
Meghan sent back a Voodoo doll damning Kate's immortal soul and things escalated from there.

by Anonymous | reply 223 | May 20, 2018 7:10 PM |
R222 Correct. Upthread doesn't know what they are talking about.
Meghan's mother has a Master's degree in Social Work and is a LCSW. I think the psychotherapist title got picked up and spread around because Meghan had described her mother as a "great clinical therapist" and is also quoted as saying "I think of my mother as a free-spirited clinical therapist." Meghan had stated several times "free-spirited clinical therapist" when describing her mother. So I could see how her MSW/LCSW, along with Meghan referring to her mother as a "clinical therapist", could have been inadvertently picked up as psychotherapist, which she may actually very well be.

I have friends (they have no affiliation with SRF/Yogananda) who were under the impression that anyone could schedule a date and pay the going rate to get married at the SRF-owned lake in Pacific Palisades, but it was considerably more involved than that and, to put it mildly, they got spooked.

R239 I used to binge watch Suits on Amazon Prime way before Meghan Markle got engaged to a Prince. So yes, there were people who used to watch it. You found one.
Glancing at the comments especially the catty ones about her looks and nose etc--Considering that the majority of the Royals are not lookers , Meghan is hands down prettifying the Royals just by joining them.
The story I heard about Serena is that they met in 2010 and became good friends. Serena allegedly gave her advice on being in hollywood and handling the paparazzi etc. and this was all before she met Harry.
The story about Meghan's friendship with Amal--only thing I know is the hairdresser that she used was recommended by Amal because they're such good friends --per the hairdresser.
I'm not sure about the story of how Oprah scored an invite. The rumor is that it's because she's friends with Meghan's mom. Also there's supposedly some secret interview she's done with Oprah that will talk about all the discrimination Meghan's experienced since she got with Harry.
by Anonymous | reply 259 | May 20, 2018 7:52 PM |

[R61] I don't think she's the antichrist. Obviously it has fans (lasting 8 years isn't easy), but it's not a watercooler, pop culture show like Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Grey's Anatomy, Friends, Lost, etc. A cast member getting a royal title is the biggest thing to ever happen to it.

I ended up watching it. It's well cast, and professionally done. The show did regularly seem to resolve some big crises in the plot(s) rather quickly, but overall I liked it.
Sparkle did not have an especially demanding role, but she was perfectly acceptable doing it, and looked great. It's not like anyone else could have played the part better, because it's just not that kind of multi-dimentional character. She's basically the Concerned Girlfriend.

R259 - you binge watched Suits??? Oh shit. You must have very low standards for entertainment. It was/is one of the most boring shows on TV. Everyone arguing with each other and/or backstabbing each other and/or fucking with each other. It's like a fucking reality show rather than a drama. They were supposedly lawyers who very rarely did any work and weren't in court very much. Meghan was barely on it this last season. The redhead had more lines than she did. When Meghan was on, she was just passable as an actress.

It's not a Game of Thrones or Stranger Things or Walking Dead or Lost or anything of that nature. It exists, it has fans, but Meghan bagging a prince is the biggest thing to ever happen to it.

R283 the point was that people were acting like no one had ever seen it or heard of her because they claim they hadn't. Once we established that was clearly false, now you're moving the goalposts and claiming that if it wasn't a huge hit (despite going on for seven seasons) then it doesn't count at all. Which again, is not the point. She wasn't A list and no one is claiming she was. She was a main character in an ensemble show for seven years, and was paid decently for it.

R196, that likely wouldn't be legal under immigration law. A UK citizen (born, naturalized or by marriage) can't bring their (foreign) parents / grandparents / adult children / siblings, etc to live permanently in the UK. One can only bring your "dependants" (i.e. spouse and children under 18).
The best they can do is bring her over on a tourist visa (6 months max). Or get her an investor's visa (she has to invest a minimum of £2 million of her funds into UK bonds).

An amusing thing about SUITS is all the female characters wear AMAZING clothes... Once a visitor to the office commented that a red outfit of the firm's owner wasn't exactly appropriate for work, and she said something along the lines of, "I didn't call you in to ask your opinion on my wardrobe."
It's the best dressed workplace cast I can remember.

Agreed, R283. It's just a cable show. If you were the one who commented on what all this publicity did for the show, I agree with you there as well. My problem is with those who said she can't act. R290 = one of the "Meghan as Antichrist" posters who can't admit that she's ever done anything good in her life, for whatever reason. She could invent the cure for cancer and they'd claim she was just doing it for the attention.
by Anonymous | reply 291 | May 20, 2018 8:51 PM |
People who don't want attention usually don't have a publicly broadcast wedding, R291.

Sorry, but Meghan invited some of this criticism when she orchestrated that Vanity Fair cover (after Harry's plea for privacy, but that's a whole other issue). It was glaringly obvious she only got that cover as Harry's new girlfriend, not as a result of her own career or accomplishments. She should have held her thirst in check for a bit.

Here's an article in the NYT talking about how great the wedding was. I post it here because I know it will make the Meghan-as-Antichrist poster's heads explode.
"Here was Meghan Markle, this beautiful bride, this self-described feminist. This divorced biracial woman, 36 years old, who had built her own career. This black princess."
by Anonymous | reply 296 | May 20, 2018 9:02 PM |
R283 you have to admit, it's never been a BIG show. It doesn't trend on Twitter, talk show hosts don't talk about it, it's not a show you go into the office and say "OMG, did you see what happened last night on Suits?????"
I wouldn't know....I don't work in an office. But it's on its 7th season, so it's a bit of a staple.
I liked it well enough to keep watching. I did wish it were a bit more intense like the law shows THE PRACTICE or DAMAGES....but it was fine. Actually, it was better than fine. And we don't regularly get more than that on TV these days.
The character of gawky, cut-throat impresario Louis would have kept me coming back, if nothing else.
by Anonymous | reply 297 | May 20, 2018 9:02 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 309 | May 20, 2018 9:20 PM |
R307 The reason I and many others don't take you seriously is because you refuse to admit that she's done anything good or useful in her life. Look at the r305. He cannot say that anything she did was successful or good. He can't admit he's jealous of her. That sort of willful ignorance invalidates any opinions because you know they're all coming from the same place of rage and hate, for whatever reason.
I think Kate's a secret cunt and a lazy twat, but she's gorgeous and I loved her wedding dress. See how that works? I personally suspect something about her, but I can admit she's done some good stuff and that I LOVED her post-secondary outfit. I'm sorry but it just isn't the same thing. You and the other people like you are illogical with your arguments and won't admit your true reasons for hating Meghan so it causes everything you say to be tainted with venom. It's not cute.
R312 I love Donna. The show's fun when the characters are all trying to out-maneuver each other.
What's good about Louis and Donna is that while they're the funniest characters, at the same time, their interior fears and insecurities have probably been explored the most.
I don't know why it is, but in ensemble shows whoever is at the center is often the least interesting. Maybe that's to appeal to the widest possible audience. It's the characters surrounding them that are often more unexpectedly enjoyable.
by Anonymous | reply 325 | May 20, 2018 9:41 PM |

R323 you are full of shit. You used the Vanity Fair article to invent reasons for Meghan "bringing this all on herself" because she ordered it to happen and her alone. You then tried to turn that into another line of attack on her.
Like most people here, I post from multiple devices based on where I am at the time. And I know the trick of ignoring people to see their past posts isn't always reliable. So, nice try I guess.

by Anonymous | reply 338 | May 20, 2018 10:05 PM |
I've always watched the show on USA network and I don't think they ever did a spinoff. Gina Torres left the series after a few seasons, because she didn't like spending all the time in Canada required to film the show. Her home is on LA. This past season and a time or two earlier, we had scenes that took place in Chicago about a firm there with Torres in them and an occasional cameo with a phone call or brief visit to "New York".

I'm surprised they are trying to carry on after losing the two main characters. Although - if they make it interesting with the new additions, it could become a whole new show and be better for it.
On second thought they'd be stupid to cancel it now with as much attention the series has gotten from Meghan and the royal wedding. So I can see why they're extending it for at least another season.
And I guess Gina's getting her own spin-off of the show now.
Wasn't there some episodes where they went to Chicago and introduced a bunch of new characters? Usually they so that when they are trying for a spin-off.

by Anonymous | reply 359 | May 20, 2018 11:02 PM |
I heard it on the news, trust me, they are rich. they got millions from their mom.
THe figure of 40 million is from newsweek.
Harry, who is fifth in line for the throne, has an estimated net worth of at least $25 million, Time reported in March. However, other estimates suggest his earnings are valued to be as much as $40 million. The 33-year-old acquired much of his money through his inheritance from late mother Princess Diana. His inheritance, which brother Prince William also received upon Diana's death, reportedly amounted to more than $13 million, according to Esquire. Harry receives additional funding through an annual allowance given to him by from his father, Prince Charles. This is financed through The Duchy of Cornwall.
Harry benefits from British taxpayers as well. Each year, the queen is given money through the Sovereign Grant, according to BBC. This allows for her to cover her family's expenses, such as travel.
Aside from his royal duties, Harry held a 10-year career in the British military. Through his service, he advanced to the rank of Captain and did two tours in Afghanistan. "It's very easy to forget about who I am when I am in the army," he told the Guardian in 2013. "Everyone's wearing the same uniform and doing the same kind of thing. I get on well with the lads, and I enjoy my job. It really is as simple as that."

Catching up, So true, R18, Doria Ragland appeared calm and composed, just lovely. Of them all, she was the one I'd like to meet. That she has kept a low profile through all this is lovely.
The guest list mainly was people connected to Harry through his war and charity work, they were hardly "friends" of the couple. Meghan had about two dozen people she knew, certainly no Kappas from Northwestern, the rest were Palace sorts. I mean really, where would they "know" Oprah well enough to call her friend. You all saw the nearly 600 file into the Chapel, you didn't know more faces than 30 at best. If that. The "Hollywood Trash" comments here only show the total lack of DL intelligence. Talk about low-end people, look to your computers, boys!
All these sweeping statements about the royals' money, support them, please. How do you guys know so much?
When Charles ascends, there will be no power-grab …. in time he will ennoble William as The Prince of Wales, a help to him. Harry and Meghan will perform royal duties, be very popular. But the throne heirs are only Charles, William, George.

Charles has been giving up $4M annually to William and Harry for years. That figure was split three ways when Kate entered the picture, and now it's going to be split four ways. These people don't touch their capital EVER for any reason. They're more about having several different sources of income coming from several well springs. You have to figure that because who they are, they've got the very BEST financial wizards working to grow those individual fortunes on a continuous basis. Here's a good rule of thumb: Completely disregard whatever figures you read in the press, and know that these people have VAST, VAST financial resources at their disposal. I don't care who says what, I know that these people are IMMENSELY wealthy, no doubt.

Charles is notoriously cheap with everyone but himself and Camilla. Will has 3, maybe more, children to protect with a future that may drastically change when Granny dies. R365 is correct, they never touch the capital. They use all kinds of ways to ensure they don't spend their own money more than they absolutely have to--overlapping vacation with "official duties," guesting on other wealthy people's yachts/property, etc.
Meghan has now brought her merching skills into the fold, which has always been a HUGE no-no. The only question is, if it gets exposed, will the Firm protect her or turn on her for it?
by Anonymous | reply 367 | May 20, 2018 11:39 PM |
William hasn't a financial worry in the world. Due to primogeniture, he inherits it ALL when his time comes. My take is that the quoted estimates pertaining to their individual net worth are just PR - a nice, respectable sum befitting their positions and standing. If, hypothetically speaking, I'm worth $100M, and everyone I know understands that I'm rich but they don't know HOW rich - then hell, I'm telling everyone that I'm only worth $25M. See what I'm saying?

During the cellist's performance, the bride and groom went into the vestry to sign the registry, accompanied by Charles and Doria. Were Charles and Doria the witnesses, or were they signing, too, as parents? It took some time. No doubt the bride, for one, freshened up a bit? Any speculation about what conversation took place there, away from the cameras and out of the congregation's hearing?
by Anonymous | reply 369 | May 20, 2018 11:58 PM |
Whatever money Diana left William and Harry, after other bequests and heavy taxes, went into trusts from which they get yearly income. Two trusts for each of them. One for living expenses. One for their charity work. The yearly income for personal expenses is supposedly $400,000 (for each of them).
So, is the trust money theirs? Yes. Is it accessible to spend all at once? Almost certainly not.
They also, as another poster mentioned, get money from Charles, who more than likely gets it from HIS income from the Duchy of Cornwall. (As the Prince of Wales is also the Duke of Cornwall.)
When Diana and Charles divorced, Diana cleaned Charles' clock financially, taking all his personal wealth PLUS additional money that he had to borrow (and pay back) from the Queen.
If Sparkle and Harry divorce, would Charles be willing to pay for Harry's divorce settlement? Or would such a divorce settlement come from only Harry's money and would the trust be locked against such a possibility?
When William becomes King, he will receive the income from the Duchy of Lancaster, plus other moneys mentioned above) and Prince George will become Prince of Wales /Duke of Cornwall and HE will receive the income from the Duchy of Cornwall.
When William becomes king, Harry will still be getting the income from the trust of money from his mother. Any other money will be only that given to him by William.

Love the queen. Long may she live! But her death will mean a real crisis for the monarchy. So many of her subjects are too young to remember her father, or they were born during her reign. There will be an initial wave of sympathy for Charles and the other royals, but they will need to stay on their best behavior to keep the public's support.

R371 going on your second marriage doesn't mean anything. I remember being worried when my sister got married because her husband was going on his third marriage. But they've been married now for over 26 years. Coincidentally he's also British.
Sometimes people learn from their mistakes and their second and third marriages are that much stronger.
I watched Suits because it was funny and over the top and the people in the office were ridiculously well dressed always in designer wear. While Meghan wasn't the main star of the show she did her part well and often had the fans hating her because of the will they or wont they nature of her character. It was a fun show to watch.

It took me a while to get used to the garb of the lawyers, but in an office, the peramaters are set by the boss...and this was a woman will millions, and she was clearly like, [italic] "I will dress to please myself...I like luxury, I like my body." [/italic]

The one thing that I’ve established from reading these royal wedding threads, is how many people are genuinely unhappy, and therefore, want others to fail.
Misery really does love company.
I can’t imagine sitting around, wishing I’ll will toward two people who are as benevolent as it gets. These aren’t powerful, politicians, or players on the world’s stage. These are two newlyweds. They aren’t making our lives miserable, or taking anything away from us here in the states. I have a really hard time wrapping my head around the motivation that moves some of you to trash these strangers.
Wow. Just wow.

During the preacher, a British commentator was asked by an American media person (I forget who, there were so damn many) what he thought the Queen may have been thinking. He said, "The Queen would like to turn to the Duke and say, "This is a bit different, isn't it?"
The dry, and probably correct, response of that British commentator cracked me up.

R386 There's a scene near the end of that Lifetime movie that hints at exactly what you are saying. Elizabeth is giving Harry and Meghan her permission to marry, and she shows them a portrait of Harry's ancestor Charlotte, who was of African descent. She's basically making the point to them that this isn't as big a deal to me personally as you thought it might be, Harry you and I are of mixed race.
"Here was Meghan Markle, this beautiful bride, this self-described feminist. This divorced biracial woman, 36 years old, who had built her own career. This black princess."
Let's see how the "self-described feminist" reacts when they tell her females are forbidden from e.g. wearing red nail varnish at Royal events. And that when she's not chaperoned by her husband, she has to curtsy submissively to more higher-up Royals.
Will she relinquish her newly acquired Royal Duchess (not "princess") title and burn her bra in "feminist" protest? Or will she bite her tongue, and toe the line?
by Anonymous | reply 396 | May 21, 2018 1:49 AM |
" Harry is totally in love with that girl. I don't think I've ever seen a groom look at a bride like that."
Oh, come on. I've seen several photos of them where he looks bewildered or uncomfortable. And they held hands the whole time, which I found settling, not romantic. In all their photos she's clutching him like he think he'll run off. Groucho Marx had a joke about couples who constantly held hands: they do it because "they're afraid if they let go they'll kill each other..
The wedding dress can be described in one world: plain. It's supposedly inspired by the late Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's wedding dress, which looked like a nightgown or a slip. Very boring wedding dress. I guess Sparkle wanted to play it safe.

Harry is not worth forty million. He owns no property. His assets are Diana's effects, split with William, which are meant to be used for fund raising for their charitable interests. These are part of the discretionary fund. The residuary fund, which is the majority of the approximate 13 million pounds that remained after taxes, was split between Harry and William, who each obtained access to their share of the income (half) when they turned 35. It is estimated Harry's income from Diana's will - his only real income - is 400k. He cannot touch the capital of the trust itself.
Obviously, there are massive perks to being a prince. Free lodging in prime London and English countryside property. Polo ponys maintained by Daddy. An allowance from daddy, as needed - purely discretionary. They have a ton of Diana's effects - obviously, some of it they give for the use of their significant other, but some is meant to fund raise. If they give it all to the wife or they sell it, it will be a bad look.
Diana's estate was split equally between William and Harry. The Queen Mum did not throw extra cash Harry's way. Harry was not treated as a special snowflake and given extra $$ from family elders who felt sorry for him being a spare. The non-sovereign and non heir family members have had to be clever and resourceful with money themselves, and expect the same of Harry. What would have been smart is for him to have married a girl who had loads of money herself, as William did, instead of marrying an older woman who had none. He's notoriously cheap.

I have yet to wade thru all five threads on this to see if this was discussed in depth: why the hell was the bride's side of church full of celebs, most of whom barely knew her? (Oprah, the Clooneys).
From what anyone can tell was there anyone present on her side - mom excepted - who is a family member, or even a friend pre-2011 when she landed the Suits gig and moved to Toronto? Anyone from her LA life: high school, college, her 20s?

I see what you're saying R368, but the monarchy is different and has to be transparent about their wills. The Queen Mother's will and prior bequests are on line, and every detail of Diana's will and the amendments after her executors challenged a couple of particulars is also on line. There is no mystery millions controlled by Harry. Going back through the history of the BRF, it's the same fucking thing in every generation. The Prince of Wales lives like a pig in shit from the income of the Duchy of Cornwall, and doles out allowances to his spawn as he deems appropriate, people who are heirs or heirs apparent have a small amount of cash (compared to the heir) and lots of perks. Hopefully, they get their hands on some jewelry along the way.
David (Duke of Windsor) managed to sock away about 90k of the income from the Duchy for his personal bank account when he abdicated, although he lied because he was trying to extort a substantial lifetime yearly allowance from his brother (he wanted 25k , which was a lot at the time). The real money stays with the sovereign and her direct heirs.
So, Harry is a spare. He's Andrew. We all know Andrew isn't secretly controlling 100 million. He can be bought for a few tens of thousands, with help from his drunken ex. He lives on property his mum allows him, he has income from his mommy.
Harry has, ONLY, as his own, income from his half of about 13 million pounds left to him from Diana. He cannot touch the principal. Her estate was sorted into a Discretionary Fund - lots of effects (clothes and jewels) and a "bit" of cash (100k), for them to use for charitable purposes and fund raising. Obviously they have some of her jewelry that they have given their respective brides, but they are meant to hang onto the really valuable stuff and use it to fund raise (I guess like that exhibit of Diana's dresses before she died). The remainder of her MONEY was put into the Residual Trust, half of the income for Harry (so, Harry gets the income of half of 13 GBP, her after tax estate), half for William.
Perks. Well, a lot. They get an allowance from Daddy. It's discretionary, but I bet if they really really want something, Daddy will give in. Guilt. Daddy buys and maintains their polo ponies, for instance. Both William and Harry reside rent free at Kensington Palace, and over time the queen has refurbished and made available cottages and smaller buildings on her country properties for their private use. Daddy or the queen pays for their weddings.
But, if your income is in the annual six figures plus access to Granny's absolutely thrilling country properties, how do you improve your position? Well, if only she had cooperated, Harry could have married Chelsy Davy, the daughter of a fabulously wealthy Zimbabwean landowner who, after deciding law was not her thing, owns her own mine and fronts a luxe jewelry company. If nobody that rich is around, you marry Cressida Bonas, who has a trust fund that produces income at least half of yours, boosting your annual up to about 600k. You probably shouldn't marry an unemployed 36 year old actress with absolutely nothing.
by Anonymous | reply 407 | May 21, 2018 2:16 AM |
R407 here, meant to say people who AREN'T heirs, even HARRY (who is today's Andrew) get by on a smallish (comparitively) amount of income and perks. The idea is they marry rich. Andrew didn't. Harry certainly didn't. William did - and didn't need to (he'll have the Duchy when Charles dies)
Andrew has 1/6 of the income from the 10ish million GBP left by the Queen mum to her grandchildren. He has a grace and favor residence (though it's not called that if you're the queen's kid, I think) and what the queen sends his way.
Harry is better off than Andrew, having a larger trust fund (half of the income from about 13 million GBP) from mommy = 400k, AND what Charles sends his way.
by Anonymous | reply 408 | May 21, 2018 2:20 AM |
William will take care of Harry and Harry's children and provide well for them. Even if they weren't close, he'd do it for PR reasons. That's why Harry of all of them can most afford to not marry rich.
Whether William will take care of Harry's now wife, assuming she's still around once William is on the throne, is another issue.

A few days after the news of Diana's tragic death broke they told me and our coworkers that upon her death she was worth $60 million. They had no reason to mention that, at the time we were all in shock over her death and speculating if it was really an accident. FWIW, that is what they told us. They also said they were certain, in her will, she left everything, divided equally between her two sons.

Camilla snickering and Kate's side-eye was the story here. When The Firm unwittingly upstages the wedding of a junior member of The Firm (never mind Harry's own uncomfortable moments immortalized in photos), it is pretty clear how they see this. An obligation to appear. Harry deserved better, but what's done will keep on giving.
The celebrity guests were a joke -- and maybe they were in on it, coming as parodies of whatever they aspired to be. George looked like an old doddering fool, and Amal a cheap hooker. Oprah should've stayed in Montecito wearing Lululemon. Preacher-man / opportunist trying to be a new Creflo Dollar. The bride's only bio-family being her mother, and treated as a token. And Victoria Beckham failing yet again to look like a sentient human being.
Total shitshow. The Sugars loved it of course, but they're braindead. The BRF on its own is enough of a historical trashy reality show -- this spectacle just diminishes that down to the age of Instagram.

All these estimates of their net worth are purely speculative. The royals are not all required to disclose all their personal finances. If Harry is smart about money, I'm sure he's quite well off. But if he's not, he's not. We have no idea what kind of expenses he carries or how wasteful he may be. It's also entirely possible to be asset rich but cash poor. Harry doesn't have a lot of leeway to sell off his assets if he needs cash, for a number of reasons (including PR), but he can generate lots of income from them if he's smart about it. The executors of Diana's estate generated a ton of money via Diana's properties (by renting, leasing, loaning them, etc.) before Harry and Will inherited their full share, but the bulk of those monies went to Diana's Memorial Fund. Now that the boys are in charge, they are free to collect that kind of money themselves, but supposedly they are committed to continue donating at least some portion to charities and have created their own charitable foundation.
And Harry can't move to the US without giving up a number of his titles/positions. Even if he were stupid enough to want to do that, William would not let him.

NO 412, she did not leave the bulk of her estate to Harry. She left her entire estate evenly split between William and Harry. There was a cash bequest to her butler, Paul Burrell (50k) and some material (mementos and stuff) bequests to her godchildren. Her executors, which included her sister (can't remember the others but it's a google away - the will is on line) challenged some aspect of the will and got an amendment - seems like something that mattered to them but didn't affect what was inherited overall.
After taxes, her estate was approximately 13 million GBP (give or take). She also left a substantial amount of personal effects - clothes, jewelry - her stuff. Her personal effects plus 100K comprise the Discretionary Fund - a trust fund intended for Harry and William's charitable enterprises. There's a mention that her effects could be used for fund raising - don't know if by selling them, or by exhibiting them. I presume the 100k is/was invested and is worth more now.
Apart from the Burrell bequest and the Discretionary Fund, the remainder of her cash was put in trust split equally between Harry and William, who accessed the income when each turned 25. I don't know if they split the income from one trust, or if the Residuary (or Residual) trust is two equal trusts, one for each. One article said Harry's half of the 13K might have ended up worth a bit more as he turned 25 later than William. I can't find any support for that in the publication of the will, as it seems to be one trust and they split evenly the income from it, not that the 13 million was split evenly into separate trusts. In any case, they can't touch the principal, which is to remain intact as long as Harry and William have descendants. I don't know what happens to it if their line dies out.
That is Harry's income. If his mother hadn't died, he would be entirely dependant on his allowance from daddy, just as Andrew was until he got the income from 1/6th of Queen Mum's 10 million.
Most books on the history of the royal family include a history of the financials. This whole thing was structured the same way back when the Queen was a kid, her dad and uncle switched places, and Uncle David lost the Duchy of Cornwall income. What I need to look up is did Elizabeth, as heir, benefit from the Duchy income before her father died, or did her dad control it as before his brother David abdicated, David was Prince of Wales (and then king) and controlled it. I guess if the king has no heir, he controls it. I can't imagine why Elizabeth wouldn't have gotten the Duchy income after she came of age when her dad was king, but I don't know.
It can be a very stressful life - not REAL WORLD stressful, but rich people stressful. Lots of access to the manifest perks and privileges of being royal, not a whole lot of MONEY that you can do with what you want. They all remain dependent throughout their lives. I don't think the entire crew at Kensington Palace stays there cause it's just the best. I mean, it's fine, I'm sure. But they can't move without reducing their circumstances AND having to pay rent. None of them can afford a KP-style independent residence of their own.

from the Mail: "Meghan is also thought to have thanked the Royal Family for welcoming her into 'The Firm,' ending her own unexpected speech with: 'I have found my prince.'
So make of that what you will... this can never last. She will be so frustrated once the system pens her in and her desire to 'modernize' makes in Meagain vs. Kate in the media.

by Anonymous | reply 456 | May 21, 2018 4:33 AM |
I don't think Meghan wants to "modernize" shit. We've seen how modern she is - she's Jessica Mulroney without implants. That's the whole thing.
Meghan has been on the hustle since before Suits, and turbo charged after Suits. She will find she can't become an Angelina Jolie global humanitarian superstar while married to Harry. Charles won't underwrite flying all over the world on private jet as Jolie did, going from photo op to photo op. She's not even going to get Kate and William's schedule - popping off the private jet beautifully dressed, carrying adorable kiddos, welcomed by dignitaries and heads of state. That's Kate / William, Charles / Camilla territory. She'll be sent to the same places Sophie goes, and support Harry's Invictus games and other special focuses as long as he's involved. A lot of people are "OMG, they are such an asset, so MODERN - the BRF will give them an amazing schedule!" No, they won't. The BRF sees the job as representing and promoting the continuity of the BRF, showing their faces to the citizens who live ordinary lives, showing up for their flag raisings, school openings, program launching. Not diplomacy (OMG, can you imagine Harry). No Obama coming into their home to shake hands with Harry Jr. (Harry was there when Obama visited Kate and William, but it wasn't his gig or his home).
I would bet anything Meghan Markle researched the hell out of Harry but NOT the royal family and their money / way of life. I bet she thinks/thought there was way more money, and never noticed that the spare doesn't globe trot as a global ambassador for the firm. That's the heir and the heir apparent, not the spare.

R455 Yep, people always throw around the term 'modernize the firm', yet little ever seems to change
by Anonymous | reply 458 | May 21, 2018 4:39 AM |
Yes, she has to walk behind him. Prince Phillip always walks behind HM, Kate behind William. It doesn't have to be awkward - William and Kate do it especially gracefully, and as soon as he's been introduced to whomever and she has made her own greeting, he usually puts a hand on her back and they equalize. They do it seamlessly, but when they enter a room or are introduced, he goes first. Watch Phillip enter the chapel paces behind his wife. It's how they do it for official reasons, not private.

by Anonymous | reply 461 | May 21, 2018 4:44 AM |
R452, you are talking out your ass. As a matter of fact, the BRF financials are public. We know how much money she left, we know what happened to it. Yes, the income is an estimate, but it's an estimate based on half of 13 GBP invested in 1996 or 7 (whenever her will was completely carried out).
And furthermore, Diana did not leave any "properties" to lease, develop, sell, renovate, etc. She HAD no property. That was a growing concern and frustration for her towards the end of her life. Her mom had a small home in Scotland where Diana would get away (they were closer than people knew). Her brother didn't want her at Althorp.
Stop making shit up. Find out what is publicly available before you do it anyway.

R462, you are too stupid to follow even the most basic discussion about finances, so stop. The BRF do not publicly disclose their own personal finances. Try showing me Harry's bank account statements or how much credit card debt he carries. Without knowing intimate details of how any of them spend money, you have no way of knowing just how rich any of them are, at least in terms of their discretionary funds.
And "properties" doesn't only refer to real estate. Diana had a wealth of clothing, jewelry, artwork and the like that for nearly 20 years was on loan to various museums and such, generating millions that went into her Memorial Fund. A simple google search would have confirmed that. Now fuck off with your ignorance.

Part of Kelly's trouble in that she never learned to really speak French, and was completely removing herself from her friends, family and culture by moving to the Franch Riviera (basically). And the palace staff was very cold toward her. (Today they'd just be fired.)

Markle is not going to be a new "People's Princess".
Diana was lucky to live in the age before social media and trash TV, she lived in a time when the palace could control the media and people didn't slag on celebrities as a hobby. But nowadays people DO spend their free time online ragging on celebrities, particularly female celebrities, and people like Andy COhen have built careers on presenting trashy celebrities to those who love to do the trashing. And since Meghan is seen as a thirsty bitch who's snagged a man all the jealous bitches would rather have themselves...
She's going to be treated more like a Real Housewife, than the second coming of Diana.

by Anonymous | reply 490 | May 21, 2018 9:35 AM |
Royals never sign prenups. Historically, prenups weren't always enforceable in the UK. Recently the Supreme Court clarified that prenups can be considered in court - unless the judge considers the prenup agreement "unfair".
That's why London is the divorce court capital of the world. The law favours the dependant-spouse (usually the wife).

R462, you are the one who doesn't know anything about finances. You haven't researched the first thing about the BRF's finances, how they're structured, what Diana left in her will.
No, we don't know Harry's bank statements, but we DO know his sole personal income is the interest from HALF of Diana's 13 GBP estate (give or take a couple of million). Knowing the amount she left her sons, knowing that it was split equally between them (public record), it is obvious Harry isn't getting forty million dollars of interest income from half of a 13 million pound estate. He has no other income, and no income-producing property (that's his DADDY, and the Duchy of Cornwall. Maybe you have the two confused?)
YOU are the idiot to say "The royal family doesn't publicize their finances!" when, in fact, much of it is available. Certainly Harry and William's inheritance from Diana is well known. In fact, the money she left her sons is the settlement she received from Charles from the divorce, intact. Clearly she was only using the income from it. She had no other cash estate or cash-producing assets like real estate.
Diana owned no property, and left no property, as in real estate. Diana was Lady Spencer, third child of the Earl of Spencer. When she was approx 18 her father got her a flat in London where she lived with three roommates, occupied her time as basically an au pair and part time day care staffer, and lived off an allowance from her family. When she got with Charles, he supported her. She didn't bring property into the marriage and she certainly didn't purchase property while married to Charles. Her will is public record. You are hilarious not knowing this, and thinking that it's a complete mystery and big secret.
Sparkle fans are just full of ignorance. Don't research, know nothing, sure they know, and haven't even bothered to do a basic google - let alone read a book or do actual research or know history - to be absolutely certain they're right.
Incidentally, real estate demi-tycoon Diana changed from purchasing high end evening clothing to borrowing high end evening clothing after the divorce, as her resources were much more constrained.
by Anonymous | reply 502 | May 21, 2018 12:19 PM |
Actually, I was the one to say the royal family doesn't publicize all their personal finances at R452. We don't know, for example, their personal expenses, so we can't really know their actual wealth or cash flow. Point being, all these reports about Harry's "worth" are totally speculative.
For example, if Harry has a $15k per month coke habit, that's putting a huge drain on his income and leaving him pretty cash-poor. Just look at Johnny Depp--the public had no clue how much of a mess his finances were (despite his very valuable real estate and ginormous income) until those lawsuits publicized his outrageous spending habits and mismanagement.
And because the sugars are so stupid, I suppose I actually have to state that no, I don't really think Harry has a $15k per month coke habit.

I don’t think the royals have the very best of everything, brand spanking new. Maybe Meghan has figured that out already. And I’m privileged enough to know (by proxy) that “luxury” is VERY relative, and it’s shocking how accustomed you get to it. I spent a week at a mansion owned by a hedge fund billionaire. At first it was a bit thrilling, and by the end of my stay, the place didn’t seem so big, and the more ostentatious features seemed foolish. (I’m not knocking it). There are places that seemed fancy and upscale to me, once upon a time, and now I know that there are much nicer places. It’s relative. And it’s not sour grapes to say that I’d rather live in a modern and new apartment in central London than live in an old castle. (It’d be lots of fun to visit, though).
I wonder how jaded Meghan is going to get. She’s come a long way, and good for her.
If most of Harry's assets are in a trust he can't touch, can she get her hands on any of the principal if they divorce?
There will most likely be a negotiated settlement which won't automatically be determined by common law because there will be so many other considerations: her title after divorce, custody (presumably), NON DISCLOSURE etc. I read (but can't find) that Diana took Charles so deeply to the cleaners that she effectively wiped out all his personal savings - but that was why they stuck it to her so badly over the HRH. She took the cash, but not the car. As I understand English common law you can't contract an agreement that would give less than an entitlement under law (ie, a premarital contract that says you waive all entitlements or will receive upon dissolution of the marriage ten pounds) but you could settle for such (although who would?)

Upthread comments about prenups and divorce settlement (when that may never happen) no one mentioned that the length of the marriage is also taken into consideration. If H&M are married short-term she won't walk away with very much. Charles and Diana's marriage was considered long-term as they were married just over 15 years. I don't know the laws there, but in the US 10-yrs is considered long-term. The length of the marriage can make a huge difference in the divorce settlements.

Should be "While I'm still not caught up on all of the threads about the wedding and its coverage, I just want to thank you..."
Sorry, tiny keyboard.

Yes, yes, R538. I understand she is a lovely woman.
It is grand to see her sons seemed to have avoided the ugly Windsor genes. Perhaps they got their looks from the Armstrong-Jones side of the family. And hair too! William and Harry are probably very jealous.

R519 - Both Phil and the Queen are fucking BOSSES! No one else will EVER get it as right as they have. They are the Royal standard which all who come after will aspire to. BOSSES!

R534, I think the looks must be down to the Chattos... Both Lords Snowdon didn't amount to much in the looks department.
But the next Earl Spencer... yummy...

R519, it’s the capillaries under his eyes hemorrhaging and it’s more noticeable because of the thin skin under the eye. Most people over 90 are covered with bruises. I don’t know if Price Phillip was a smoker but Lord knows his mother was, Chesterfield if I remember correctly. Good call about Princess Alice, her eyes were horrible.
On the topic of Royal Weddings and Princess Alice there is a striking black and white photo taken from above of Princess Alice in her habit proceeding alone down the aisle of Westminster at Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip’s wedding.

Lady Sarah Chatto has an extraordinarily expressive face, especially her eyes. She'd have made a fine actress.
by Anonymous | reply 544 | May 21, 2018 4:05 PM |
Wow, r543, Philip is now the spitting image of his mother.
In the pics at r525 and r526, Harry looks like Honey Boo Boo's dad, Sugar Bear.

I hope Miss Markle realizes that if she ever leaves Harry and it isn't mutual she will be hated around the world.

Re: the black choir. Obviously they couldn't do "All You Need Is Love" since it would have been lifted directly from LOVE ACTUALLY. But instead of that watered down version of "Stand by Me", they should have done "Oh Happy Day" - (yes, I know it's from Sister Act 2). This would have had Oprah dancing in the aisle!!
by Anonymous | reply 547 | May 21, 2018 4:26 PM |
Diana’s will was not split 50/50 between William and Harry. She knew that William was set as the future king. Harry was given the bulk to compensate.

Beer pong was played at the reception? And I thought Whitney Houston's "I Want to Dance with Somebody" for the first dance was cringe-worthy.

Lady Sarah Chatto is an excellent dresser as shown in that wedding photo with her sons and husband. That outfit is the right blend of chic and quiet good taste.

Yes, the Chattos are certainly an elegant family.

Nobody said that, R531. The only people speculating are the ones insisting he's worth $40 million.

The fact that Andrew/Fergie and Edward/Sophie have resorted to a number of incredibly dodgy schemes suggests that younger sons are not rolling in money. Edward and Sophie live in Bagshot Hall (no idea if they own it) but they cannot afford to heat it so live in only a few rooms.

This place has turned into Pinterest for the paranoid-obsessive.
We have the Poo Accuser Troll, the Russian Bot Accuser Troll (Russian Bots have taken over a royal wedding thread - for reals!), the little queen who equates any criticism of the Blushing Bride with calling her the Anti-Christ (Kaiser-Kaiser is that you?); all we need is the Trans Hag Troll to show up to make the DL into the Today Show's outside audience.

by Anonymous | reply 562 | May 21, 2018 5:52 PM |
What schemes have Edward and Sophie pulled?
It could be that they aren't rolling in money, or it could be that they are just greedy or wasteful. By all accounts, Charles is a stingy bastard (except for his and Camilla's expenses) but it could be that from his vantage point Edward and Andrew have more than enough to live comfortably if they were more responsible.
It's also not uncommon to heat rooms in those castles only as needed, because it is ridiculously wasteful even if you have the money to burn. They certainly weren't built with central heating in mind.
by Anonymous | reply 563 | May 21, 2018 5:54 PM |
Sophie was caught by a fake sheik sting, trying to sell access of some kind. It was some years back. Edward had a failed production company that actually made a show called "It's a Royal Knockout", some kind of game show featuring royalty or aristocrats. Now she and Edward are on the queen's payroll and they perform royal duties.
by Anonymous | reply 564 | May 21, 2018 6:00 PM |
Ha, I forgot about "It's a Royal Knockout." Wasn't Fergie on it? That doesn't seem like a scheme so much as just a bad idea/investment.
I never heard that about Sophie. She must have really done her penance.

It's not ridiculous to suggest that Harry might be in debt. The party-loving irresponsible sons of the aristocracy have always spent more than their income, secure in the belief that their parents have enough money to bail them out.
What is ridiculous is to insist that Harry IS or IS NOT in debt, because we don't know. Diana's will is public, but Harry's bank statement is not.

Would one look to a Britsh royal wedding for innovation? They're about the most traditional thing, ever.
The dress was classically simple, from the design house that also put Audrey Hepburn in primarily unadorned silhouttes in the 60s.

r596, it's mostly black women calling her that. They would eagerly and joyously stomp every light skinned black woman to death, if they could get away with it. The racist self-loathing jealousy-borne hatred directed towards mixed women by black women is as vicious and irrational as that of Neo-Nazis.
