Which of Meryl Streep's peers does she admire and/or envy the most?

Why do you think?

by Anonymousreply 369July 25, 2019 5:57 PM

Ms. Lange, of course.

by Anonymousreply 1April 7, 2018 6:39 AM

Now you and G. really have something of significance in common.

You both lack something I have.

Or was it 2016? I'm to drunk on booze and acclaim to care.

by Anonymousreply 10April 7, 2018 7:08 AM

Andy Cohen - Was there ever a film you turned down and went to see and said, "Oh my God, I didn't do it!"

Streep - Yes, yes, that happened...there have been movies that I have really, really, really, really, really wanted to do but they didn't want me and I went to see the movie and I thought, "They were right." [...] I think of Sweet Dreams that Jessica Lange did with Karel Reisz - and he was a friend of mine [long funny pause] and he was the director and, yeah, he cast Jessica and I went to see that movie and I thought, "NOBODY can do that better." I mean, it was DIVINE.

Let’s make a list of great actresses who are now quote, unquote, too old. There’s Jessica Lange, Anjelica Huston, Glenn Close. We could sit here forever.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 16April 7, 2018 7:39 AM

I like Jessica Lange a lot but she is not the same kind of class actress Meryl Streep is. Or was early on. She's recycled now. But she was once Marlon Brando good. She's ridiculous now.

by Anonymousreply 17April 7, 2018 7:41 AM

I wasted so many years thinking I wasn’t pretty enough and why didn’t I have Jessica Lange’s body or someone else’s legs? What a waste of time.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 18April 7, 2018 7:43 AM

R17 Well Meryl still loves her NOW. Most of her most glowing compliments are from this decade.

by Anonymousreply 19April 7, 2018 7:45 AM

RC: It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing this character. Has there ever been a role that got away from you – for scheduling or whatever reason – that you look back and wish you could have done?

Streep: Yeah, but I probably wouldn’t have been as good as the person that did it.

RC: Are you going to elaborate?

Streep: I’ve always loved Patsy Cline and I always wanted to do that story of her life. Jessica Lange did it and she was fantastic.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 20April 7, 2018 7:48 AM

It's Glenn Close.

by Anonymousreply 21April 7, 2018 7:50 AM

She simply said she admired Lange's legs.

by Anonymousreply 22April 7, 2018 7:50 AM

Streep: I really loved that movie that Jessica Lange made, (1985’s) “Sweet Dreams,” about Patsy Cline. But I wasn’t offered it, so it’s not like it really got away. It was Jessica’s from the beginning, even though (director Karel Reisz) was a good friend of mine. But I got his house in London in recompense when I was shooting (1985’s) “Plenty.” I said, “Well, if you weren’t going to pick me for that, the least you can do is give me your house in Hampstead.” And he did!

Was this before you’d proven you could sing in 1990’s “Postcards From the Edge”?

Streep: Oh, I don’t know. When I saw (“Sweet Dreams”) – this is the most important part of that story – I couldn’t imagine doing it as well or even coming close to what Jessica did because she was so amazing in it.

by Anonymousreply 23April 7, 2018 7:51 AM

My God. lol. It's obviously Jessica.

Has Streep even mentioned another actress as frequently and reverently as she has Lange?

by Anonymousreply 24April 7, 2018 7:56 AM

Jessica Lange is awesome But she is not or has ever been mainstream. She is not mad revered or broke any crazy box office records to make her challenge be a screen icon mainstay

by Anonymousreply 25April 7, 2018 8:02 AM

Only Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts qualify as true modern film actress icons.

by Anonymousreply 26April 7, 2018 8:07 AM

That's part of her charm, R25. She actively avoided being mainstream and yet she's probably Hollywood's most iconic and successful non-mainstream actress.

She's iconoclastic.

by Anonymousreply 27April 7, 2018 8:18 AM

Streep: Quality of life. I remember talking with Jessica Lange and saying, "You live where?” And she said, “You don’t know, it’s great!” And it is pretty great. Very cosmopolitan. Great restaurants, vintage stores, I cleaned-up. My daughters were happy.

Lange is not a screen icon. No matter how much we love her. I don't think Meryl is top 10.

by Anonymousreply 29April 7, 2018 8:23 AM

Jessica Lange has made very few BORING films, anyway. The only ones that come to mind are LOSING ISAIAH and EVERYBODY'S ALL-AMERICAN. And even those aren't [italic]so[/italic] bad. They're just conventional.

R30 So true about her films, though I firmly believe that Everybody's All-American and Losing Isaiah are two of her most underrated films containing some of her best work.

The former is my favorite sports film. Dennis Quaid is a revelation here and John Goodman is crushing.

Lange and Berry are dynamite in a powerful little film that's less v k conventional than you'd think.

by Anonymousreply 33April 7, 2018 9:15 AM

From the quote at R14, Streep probably ranks those three in that order.

"Jessica Lange, Anjelica Huston, Glenn Close."

by Anonymousreply 34April 7, 2018 9:19 AM

R31 & R32 So gorgeous yet dangerously mysterious.

by Anonymousreply 35April 7, 2018 9:23 AM

Let's discuss two hard-working, talented women of a certain age.

I wonder how much of Meryl's fixation on Jessica is based on Jessica's beauty, and not merely her talent.

Jessica is almost exactly 2 months older than Meryl. Before her film debut, Lange worked as a fashion model for Wilhelmina and dropped out of college.

Meryl, by contrast, went right from Vassar to Yale, even enrolling at Dartmouth as a visiting student.

My personal takeaway? Meryl envies no one's career more than her own. Meryl admires talent, but ultimately, no one's talent more than her own.

But.... in a perfect world, Meryl would have chosen to be Meryl--with Jessica Lange's looks.

Just saying.

Cousin Bette is really good, too. The casting of a still striking Lange on the verge of turning 50 A's "the hag" is brilliant casting, highlighting the titular character's innate anger and frustration at being chronically overlooked, undervalued and underestimated.

If her early career's before your, this was Lange's breakthrough performance, when she was first really taken seriously.
Only Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts qualify as true modern film actress icons.

And in their only pairing Streep embarrassed herself and Julia Roberts walked away with the film (and in all honesty, should have won that Oscar over Lupita).

Not that I think Roberts is a particularly great actress but it goes to show how well Streep usually picks her roles, and it is startling how unsuitable she was in AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY. Nothing in her bag of tricks saved a performance that could have been done by most of the list above plus Judy Davis to perfection.

by Anonymousreply 45April 7, 2018 9:59 AM

R43 No. Weaver's best performances are in:

Map of the World (she should've won)

The Ice Storm (another win)

Death and the Maiden (she should've been nominated)

Aliens

I do think she perhaps could be a tad jealous of Diane Keaton. I think Meryl envies Keaton's stature.

by Anonymousreply 49April 7, 2018 10:12 AM

I see what you mean, r49, Diane is an individual as an actress in her generation, she’s so unusual and iconic.

I'm kind of thinking r49/r50 may be right - I think Keaton may be the only one she might (might) consider somewhat her equal. She's also the oldest and has held up a career for by far the longest, except for Fonda who isn't on this list - and took a two decade long break anyway.

by Anonymousreply 59April 8, 2018 5:38 PM

R30, Lange has some underrated gems like "Men Don't Leave" and "Music Box," but she's made some interesting choices, eschewing eventual popular fare over more personal, intimate works. She turned down "Places in the Heart" to do her own farm picture, "Country." She said "yes" to Sam Shephard's "Far North," but said "no" to War of the Roses." And instead of doing "Thelma and Louise" she did the aforementioned "Men Don't Leave," which didn"t exactly set the box office on fire.

Lange bought a Virginia farm early on and lived a fairly low key lifestyle. (Later she moved to a farm in Minesotta.) She never had addictions (including shopping) and had men in her life with their own incomes. She never had to sign on to cheesy franchises and such because she didn't have a huge entourage, or personal upkeep.

[italic]"I had this kind of romantic image of the children growing up not dissimilarly to the way I grew up, in a small town where they could walk to school," explains the actress in her light drawl. "And I wanted to raise them close to their extended family." In the town of Stillwater, on a knoll above the St. Croix River, they settled into a rambling 1890s Victorian house directly next door to the home of Lange's mother.

I doubt she fawns over Streep like young actors. What's the deal? And why have they never worked together?

by Anonymousreply 73April 9, 2018 2:41 AM

The Lange troll won't give up, will she. Streep's technical skills put her in a different category from all of these. Keaton proved she could play something other than herself fairly early-on. Huston has more versatility than she's given credit--she's good in "the Dead" in a way I wouldn't have expected. Lange was awful in the beginning and became reasonably competent later-on, but frankly limited. as for her personal life, getting involved with Sam Shepherd wasn't exactly great jusgment. Sarandon has played an interesting range of people, but you don't forget who she is. Ditto Close, but she has a bit more range.

by Anonymousreply 74April 9, 2018 2:42 AM

Jessica Lange has more Emmys and Tony awards on her shelf than Meryl.

Both have won Best Actress and Supporting Actress Oscar though.

However Meryl (and Ingrid Bergman) are the only double Oscar winner to also have a supporting actress Oscar

I wonder if younger generations are more aware of Lange (because of her TV work) and Weaver (because of the Alien franchise) than Streep. I mean, "Mamma Mia!", "Florence Foster Jenkins", "The Iron Lady"... do not exactly scream contemporary. She seems somehow more of a old-fashioned actor than the other two.

I find it funny that Huppert has become of interest to the US mainstream just in the past year or two. I believe that's for two reasons; she's cool as fuck and she chooses ballsy projects.

by Anonymousreply 79April 9, 2018 4:21 AM

^aN old-fashioned

by Anonymousreply 80April 9, 2018 4:22 AM

None of them. Streep’s movie The Post made more money than Jennifer Lawrence’s Red Sparrow

Jessica is still having difficulty lining up work

Glenn’s movie The Wife will come out in August and should land with a thud

by Anonymousreply 81April 9, 2018 4:25 AM

Jessica has reached a whole new audience due to American Horror Story but I'm not sure if she is totally happy about that. She worked with a friend of mine and he said she asked him one day why some people are so obsessed with her now. He said it was because of the depth of her performances. She said she doesn't get it and seemed baffled by the new level of fame.

Well....they're probablly on a par. Streep has her choice of roles and she's scooped up some very commercial projects that the masses saw, like THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. And a lot of children must have seen the LEMONY SNICKET thing and INTO THE WOODS (?)

by Anonymousreply 104April 9, 2018 4:54 AM

This generation is so full of excellent actresses that it's a shame you really only see Streep and Lange in prestige projects these days (with Streep the only one getting high-profile film roles).

Huston, Spacek, and Keaton are my favorites from this list. They're the most compelling, unique screen presences.

Streep's ubiquity and automatic Oscar nominations for mediocre films have left me somewhat disenchanted with her. Lange is the more exciting actress, I think, but she can be mannered at times.

by Anonymousreply 105April 9, 2018 4:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 107April 9, 2018 4:59 AM
Julia and Jodie are heads of the generation after.

I would think that Sandra Bullock would be Julia's generation. Also Kidman and maybe Blanchett. Jodie Foster hasn't properly acted in over a decade and a half. She talked about the difficulty of getting good parts when she was promoting that airplane movie.

by Anonymousreply 108April 9, 2018 5:01 AM

I think Millenials respect Foster cause their parents like Silence of the Lambs. No one under 30 has even seen Tootsie. Sad but true.

by Anonymousreply 109April 9, 2018 5:07 AM

R106 she could be effective but overrated as fuck and Kael's fangirlism was such a turnoff. She also had this weird masculine energy that I can't pinpoint but it's offputting.

Keaton and Fonda are my favorites of this group. And Fonda is much prettier than Lange imo, who honestly when she is not blonde is kind of midwestern plain.

by Anonymousreply 116April 9, 2018 5:25 AM

The only one on that list who has/had what Streep lacks, is Sarandon and her earthy sexiness. Streep could never on her best day have played that part in Bull Durham.

by Anonymousreply 117April 9, 2018 5:30 AM
Jodie. All Hollywood respects her.

LOL. There are some quite clueless FosterFangurls on this site. If Hollywood thinks of Jodie at all these days, it's to recall her bizarre Golden Globe speech. Or her best buds, RDJ and Mel Gibson. Or her pet project: a Leni Riefenstahl biopic that, if there is a movie God, will never ever get made. Jodie's glory days were 25 to 30 years ago.

When has Jodie ever been the "head of her generation" in anything? She's never been particularly supportive or generous to other actresses. Unlike Meryl, who has spoken highly of many of her peers.

I cannot imagine Foster and Streep having much to say to one another, much less being buddies. Streep spent years in college and at Yale Drama learning her art. Jodie was thrust into the industry as the tiny child of a demented stage mother (and the meal ticket). Despite Jodie's ritzy credentials at the Lysee and as a Yale undergrad, she always crowed about how acting was "instinct" and how she never took a single acting class. Not one.

The word is that Meryl is actually closest to funny women (Goldie Hawn, Catherine O'Hara) because she loves to laugh more than anything else. Does Jodie Foster even possess a sense of humor?

Foster bugs me. Always has, always will.

To the insipid twat insisting Lange isn't getting any offers: How do you know this?

Pedro Almadovar mentioned wanting to work with her and Sarandon last year at Cannes. Jessica was mesmerized by Feud.

She still has The Lonely Doll happening which I hear is gearing up for pre-production very soon.

Also, Murphy has mentioned that he pretty much has her on the verge of signing up for season 8.

She's working on her 4th photography book right now focused on Route 66 I believe. So she's busy with that right now.

For all we know, she's been offered more and has turned down those projects or they simply haven't been announced.

by Anonymousreply 119April 9, 2018 5:32 AM

AgreeR117. And that's such a great female role. Sue should have been nominated for Bull Durham. The Accused is not a good movie but I could see why Jodie one. It was an excruciating performance to watch. And I'm sure that was taken into account. But I think Meryl's best performance ever is in A Cry In The Dark. Great movie too

The film that doesn't really fit into Lange's...[italic]oeuvre[/italic] is HUSH (1998). It's not like it's really inept or anything, and it looks like it cost a decent amount of money to make...but it's quite silly. I think the studio thought it would be the next THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE.

Did the script just somehow read much better than it ultimately played out? How did they get Gwyneth Paltrow to do this, too?? They must have just thrown a ton of money at everyone. I know they had to reshoot the ending a bunch of times, as it became apparent it was a mess.

It should have been shot for Lifetime with Susan Lucci or someone.

Lang was awful in Hush, Losing Isaiah and Rob Roy all together. She was also laughable in Blue Sky. Her great work was ALL IN THE 80s. She's done nothing but the same breathy, horny old whore since the 90s. And yes I agree, her TV has changed her status in my mind. She's been nothing but cheap on television.

by Anonymousreply 124April 9, 2018 5:43 AM

Oh stop. She's good in everything. HUSH was bad, not HER.

by Anonymousreply 125April 9, 2018 5:45 AM

R123 They ditched the original ending which had a crazier and more satisfying ending. I honestly think Paltrow had something to do with the script changes and reshoots (it was released the same year as Shakespeare in Love, I believe), which made her character more sympathetic.

I bought the original script from EBay years ago. It was titled "Kilronan" and ended with Lange nearly killing Paltrow in the barn with a broken share of glass. She and Paltrow end up having a physical altercation and the barn gets set on fire.

Paltrow ends up escaping after killing Lange and leaving her to burn with the barn.

I still have hope they'll release the director's cut someday.

The trailer above actually included some of the cut scenes. Even the one with Lange lunging at Paltrow with the shard of glass.

by Anonymousreply 131April 9, 2018 5:53 AM
R126 I bought the original script from EBay years ago. It was titled "Kilronan"

Thanks. You know the action had to have been monkeyed around with a lot pre or post shooting, because you can't imagine Lange (or Paltrow) reading the script, as it ended up on the screen, and being all, "YES! I simply MUST do this!!" (I read that some scenes were also cut because the studio decided to go with a PG rating, after the fact...so that necessitated shuffling things around, further.)

Doesn't the film just look too BRIGHT and sunshiny to be moody or scary, too? I mean, if it's a gothic chiller, I'd expect a few more shadows, or SOMETHING.

R134 Try calling her mom?

by Anonymousreply 135April 9, 2018 7:29 AM

R132 Funny enough, based on the cut scenes in the trailer, they edited out the darkest - literally and figuratively - scenes.

Also, the reshot scenes are much too bright.

The original script is actually pretty good and reminds of an old school grand guignol (sp?) pic.

In it they don't underplay Martha's murderous psychosis as much as they tease it out and build it up to a frenzied and suspenseful crescendo. The true crime of the bastardized reedited version is that they reduce the central villain from a lust filled (Martha even fucks the handymanan who she "pays" to assault Paltrow) murderer into a whimpering grandma.

It's like they did the exact opposite of what the producers of "Fatal Attraction" did. That was Paltrows doing.

I feel like starting a petition to get the director's cut - "Kilronan" - released. It might be smart a thing to do since "American Horror Story", especially her seasons, is still popular. The original cut is very much like a mini installment of AHS

Fun fact,: Winona Ryder was lined up to star in this with Lange.

by Anonymousreply 141April 9, 2018 5:03 PM

Lange is really better and more interesting and versatile than all the gals on this list.

by Anonymousreply 142April 9, 2018 9:15 PM

Ugh, if you like the same performance being given over and over again. No one writes about her films because they are so bad. TV works for her tics and histrionics

by Anonymousreply 143April 9, 2018 9:34 PM

Leave Meryl alone, R143. Her tics and histrionics are wonderful. As are Lange's. No one does it better than those two.

If Hollywood were smart, which of course they aren't, they would put Lange and Streep in funny, crazy, dramatic and maybe even suspenseful pic. It would be amazing to see those work opposite one another. I have a feeling they'd have amazing chemistry.

by Anonymousreply 144April 9, 2018 9:43 PM

Jessica is the one with the same crazy tics. The only place I see people say how great she is here. She can’t get work, and only Ryan Murphy will put up with her. I literally cannot recommend any of her films except Tootsie. At least Meryl, Sigourney and Glenn made some great films

by Anonymousreply 145April 9, 2018 9:50 PM

Lange is actually highly revered in Hollywood's acting community. She was one of those women who were always nominated for Oscars fir Best Actress in the 1980s, and her performance in "Frances" in particular is legendary.

What makes her all the more impressive is that unlike Streep and she did not go to one of the major acting schools like Yale or Juilliard.

by Anonymousreply 146April 9, 2018 10:01 PM

R145 You keep telling yourself that, darlin', as she keeps racking up awards and running circles around your fave.

Come on, ALL movie stars basically give the "same performance" over and over again. Tom Hanks is always Tom Hanks, Julanne Moore is pretty much always the same Julianne Moore, Julia Roberts will never be anything other than Julia Roberts.

Meryl Streep does change her look and her style around more than other stars...and people are impressed by that. But I don't know that it really makes her a "better" actor than Lange. She's just a different one.

I would say that Lange's performances have roused more emotion in me over the years, as an audience member, than Streep's have...but I still admire them both.

This is the old, aging Hollywood far left blowing itself. The film barely worked then, and frankly, it's embarrassing now. Nicholson is actually superlative (and I'm not usually a fan). Maureen Stapleton and a few others are compelling to watch as the witnesses, a technique that only occasionally pays off.

But Beatty and Keaton both behave like some tiresome, pretty but irritating couple raging at each other in a 1981 Malibu beachfront property. Which of course, they are. No gravity, no history, no point, really.

by Anonymousreply 194April 12, 2018 9:18 PM

In terms of career achievement Lange, despite her many successes, is small potatoes next to Streep.

I think that even Streep herself would admit that she has never had and never will have an onstage triumph as complete as that of Glenn Close in 'Sunset Boulevard' .

by Anonymousreply 195April 12, 2018 9:25 PM

Streep has over a hundred screen credits.

Lange has under fifty credits.

Streep has 3 Oscars, 2 Emmys and 8 Globes.

by Anonymousreply 197April 12, 2018 9:32 PM

You're nuts R195. Close and Lange are both better actors than Streep. Streep would have her EGOT if she wasn't so afraid of being found out on stage. Her talents are rather shallow and easily exposed. She doesn't inhabit a character, she puts one on. They are beginning to all seem alike too. It's been a long time since Streep moved anyone to more than polite applause. Lange makes people vibrate and swoon.

R36, Meryl was absolutely GORGEOUS when she was younger. Take a look at her early work if you’ve forgotten. Regardless, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I think Jessica Lange was also GORGEOUS.

Streep has aged much better than Lange, that’s for sure.

I don’t think Streep is envious of anyone’s career. Let’s face it, she’s still on top.

I once thought Kate Winslet or Care Blanchett were on their way to a career like Streep’s. Not so sure about that anymore.

by Anonymousreply 200April 12, 2018 9:48 PM

CAA is still having difficulty getting Jessica a good role. I like her but she has a bad reputation for drinking AND blaming directors when her projects don’t work out. She’s kind of a haughty diva

by Anonymousreply 205April 13, 2018 1:40 AM

I highly disagree with the statement at r205. What on earth makes you think I care about the Junior Gummesses? I mean Henry yes, but the girls are just a cross for me to bear. And besides they have their father to care for them (at is not like he has anything else to do.)

by Anonymousreply 206April 13, 2018 1:45 AM

by Anonymousreply 207April 13, 2018 2:11 AM

All the awards in the world don't meet anything, though Streeps' 21 Oscar nominations and counting do. It's a record that no other actor will touch in our lifetimes. It's pretty amazing when her next nearest are Jack Nicholson & Katharine Hepburn with 12 nominations each - one is dead, they other is retired (the American re-make of Toni Erdmann will not happen). Streep has a good 20 years or so left in her and she is one of the few actors that can get bums on seats.

What counts is if the films you have made stand up to the test of time and audiences of the future are interesting in seeing them. Some of these actress have some classic films to the credits in which they are the lead or co-lead. Some have classic films to their credits in which they have a supporting role. And some of them have virtually nothing of any long standing value.

by Anonymousreply 213April 13, 2018 1:50 PM

R210 with actors it’s different. It’s not that they HAVE to work (well some have to but not on Streep’s or Langes level) it’s more of a calling for them. Lange I think has never been terribly ambitious like Streep. The Ryan Murphy stuff I think was mainly a nice little nest egg for retirement and in many ways was beneath Langes talent. Streep pretty much gobbles up all the roles for a 70ish actress. Anything left over goes to Helen Mirren.

Lange knows this and instead of doing just anything she sits it out. The rigors of Broadway doing Long Days Journey Into Night I’m sure we’re tough and sure she’s glad getting a little breather. If she wants to anything else TV would always welcome her. And the occasional film role.

by Anonymousreply 214April 13, 2018 2:40 PM
r214 with actors it’s different. It’s not that they HAVE to work (well some have to but not on Streep’s or Langes level) it’s more of a calling for them.

The Nix has not - to my knowledge - been picked up by a streaming network. They may be waiting to announce it until after Streep finishes Big Little Lies to officially set it up. The character is a woman who threw rocks at a Republican Presidential candidate, and there is a great part for her son who is a literal crybaby. Bradley Cooper would be perfect

Jess only gets offers from Ryan Murphy, or weird one offs like Wild Oats

by Anonymousreply 224April 14, 2018 5:05 PM

I voted for Jessica. She is amazing!

by Anonymousreply 225April 15, 2018 7:44 AM

Jessica.

by Anonymousreply 226April 15, 2018 12:16 PM

What's been amazing to witness is the massive amount of millennial flocking of check out Jessica Lange films all because of American Horror Story. You can criticize and chastise her partnership with Ryan Murphy all you want but working together is one of the most brilliant career moves either of them ever made. it also gave that Sarah Paulson creature a career

More importantly, it gave Lange a weekly audience - comprised of broad demographics - The equivalent of scoring $20-$60 million (2-6 million people) at the box office for nearly 50 weeks spread across nearly 5 years.

That's a lot of fucking people.

Go to YouTube and Twitter, tumblr and Facebook, and Instagram and all of those other apps and things people get lost in and you'll find hundreds of accounts dedicated to her life and career, including her older lesser known films. They're not so forgotten now.

by Anonymousreply 227April 15, 2018 3:43 PM

I might add no other actress on this list including Meryl has had that kind of exposure in their entire careers.

by Anonymousreply 228April 15, 2018 3:47 PM

Oh brother. There is no one watching Jessica’s old films because they suck

by Anonymousreply 229April 15, 2018 4:17 PM

Meryl watches them, lol.

by Anonymousreply 230April 15, 2018 4:33 PM

Doubtful. The only place people talk about Jessica is Datalounge, but the threads really have to be about Meryl Streep. Jessica on her own cannot sustain a thread

by Anonymousreply 231April 15, 2018 5:06 PM

I really like Jessica, but as much as Murphy revived her career he also went too far and hurt it. FEUD was supposed to be her non AHS project, but Murphy did not know when to quit with it. He also underestimated BIG LITTLE LIES becoming such an awards and cultural juggernaut that overshadowed FEUD.

by Anonymousreply 233April 15, 2018 6:05 PM

The Lange Troll is on a roll with this thread. Too bad this isn't enough to get her a decent job. Oh, I forgot. She doesn't care enough , is too picky or too good or whatever the excuse is for her lack of employment.

by Anonymousreply 234April 15, 2018 7:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 235April 15, 2018 8:02 PM

But she is, Blanche, she is unemployed!

by Anonymousreply 236April 15, 2018 8:11 PM

I'm actually starting to think you are, R236.

Lange is what one calls semi retired. She won the Tony and every theater award in existence just 1 1/2 years ago.

Feud was big success, getting nominated for everything. The only reason Big Little Lies beat it for awards was they overplayed the tepid abuse storyline with catatonic Nicole Kidman headlining. It was the year of #MeToo and awarding a bunch of overpriveleged desperate housewives somewshat took the sting of guilt out f Hollywood's ass. Not really, but h well.

Feud didn't win because it wasn't tasteful to award a show about to alcoholic, abusive divas, no matter how much they were abused themselves.

by Anonymousreply 237April 15, 2018 8:32 PM

R193 is a perfect example of how infantile and dumbed-down DL has become.

by Anonymousreply 238April 15, 2018 8:37 PM

If you write on behalf of a celebrity then you have mental health issues + maybe she is hard to cast. This BS about semiretired is a joke.

Sigourney and Debra Winger should be in conversation because they made good movies

by Anonymousreply 239April 15, 2018 10:35 PM

I just ordered Criterion Tootsie and Postman Always Rings Twice, Cape Fear, all on recently released blu ray, of course.

Next week it's A Streetcar Named Desire and Cousin Bette.

I ordered A Map of the World, which contains my favorite Sigourney Weaver performance.

She and Lange should have won Lead (Weaver) and Supporting Actress for their work in this film and Titus. Both films were released n 1999 and show both Lange and Weaver at their very best. Both are actually great films as well.

by Anonymousreply 240April 15, 2018 10:56 PM

R237 is delusional and lying. Big Little Lies was winning tons of Emmys and other awards in September before #METOO broke loose in October and voting ended in August. It is not as if it was not previously critically acclaimed. I liked the first six episodes of FEUD, but the shows ratings and cultural impact were already fading before the show ended. Blame Murphy for that. And that he did not know how to parlay women's struggles and ill treatment in the entertainment industry into awards. He had the real life stories. I guess he was too busy to be bothered.

by Anonymousreply 241April 15, 2018 11:51 PM

Feud was a dud. Lange as Crawford was completely miscast. Her awards hog spree is over unless Ryan Murphy makes up another sexy deluded senior part for her. A whore nun with a red slip? The mind boggles how much bad acting by Jessica has been captured on film. I hate her moaning histrionics

You play a troll on this tread, I get it. But if you are going for entertainment using an unpopular opinion I suggest you back it up with something. To go on and on about how lousy someone is, with an insult or two thrown in... is a bit simplistic, Trump-like if you wish.

I voted for Glenn Close.

Though I have issues with the poll.

I think I would've substituted Debra Winger for maybe Helen Mirren or Judy Davis or perhaps Kathy Bates. I think it's leading to an odd distortion where Jessica Lange has what seems like a disproportionately high share of the vote. Either that, or that unhinged superfan of hers has been clearing cookies and voting repeatedly.

I don't know. But I think it depends of WHAT people are voting for.

Though Streep has complimented Jess publicly all of her compliments of her have focused on her looks not her acting. Streep wanted her legs, her face -- and has said so on more than one occasion. But she doesn't seem to have been as lavish in her praise for her performances, to my knowledge. There was a time, back in say the eighties, when it seemed reasonable to assume Lange might've been the most envied of those women; however given how both her career and physical appearance haven't held up as well as character-actor faced Streep, it's hard to imagine Streep really envies her that much today.

If we were holding the poll thirty, thirty-five years ago, maybe Lange would be the right choice, but not today, no.

But then who IS the most envied? None probably.

Streep aside, Close, Spacek, and Sarandon are probably the better of those actresses to varying degrees. Of them, I'd be inclined to go with Close. Spacek and Sarandon's Oscar days are over now. But Close could still win. No one will surpass Streep at this point, but if Close got enough buzz to win an Oscar for THE WIFE and might enough of a boost to nab a role that Streep might've looked over. Could she do well enough to offer Streep competition for her fourth Oscar...

Unlikely. But she's closer than any of the others, so, yes, it's Close.

by Anonymousreply 283May 7, 2018 5:44 PM

It certainly seems odd that Sarandon's barely doing better than Winger -- at least if you're unfamiliar with how wildly unpopular she is around here.

Like really hated.

A shame.

She's given good performances and really shone in FEUD. Anywhere else and she'd definitely have a bigger share of the pie, especially when compared to Jessica Lange.

by Anonymousreply 284May 7, 2018 6:09 PM

Sally Field too. A two-time Oscar winner.

If you really wanted to go back in time, let's go back to her Yale days when she was a classmate of Sigourney Weaver. Maybe she envied Weaver's wealth and later success at becoming more of a sexy, commercial leading lady type whilst also maintaining critical respect.

by Anonymousreply 285May 7, 2018 7:17 PM

Who’s last in the poll? I’ll give them a protest vote to protest Jill Clayburgh’s and Old Janie’s exclusion.

by Anonymousreply 286May 7, 2018 7:21 PM

Streep envied Lange most. She's praised her looks, her acting ability and obviously loves Lange in "Sweet Dreams". All of those quotes have been posted in this thread for those who care to look versus to assume.

by Anonymousreply 289May 7, 2018 8:17 PM

She doesn't praise Jess in that though. She mentions her briefly in passing after she says she worries she isn't right for a role. Presumably, because of her insecurity in her looks as opposed to more traditionally pretty Jess.

When has she actually praised Jess' performances, not looks, apart from obligatory complimentary asides when she mentions how she wish she'd have been offered SWEET DREAMS?

by Anonymousreply 290May 7, 2018 9:08 PM

R290 Oh honey, now you're going to mince and parse my words?

R293 Dear, M loves EVERYTHING Lange, hence the myriad quotes on her spanning 30 years. Try harder. Your seams are showing.

by Anonymousreply 294May 7, 2018 10:32 PM

Jess has always had a chip on her shoulder about Meryl. In her entire public life, I cannot recall her ever mentioning her. Streep was generous because she not only beat Lange, she went on to movie success while Jessica slowly fell apart. She always will be known as number two, or lower.

by Anonymousreply 295May 8, 2018 1:53 AM
M loves EVERYTHING Lange, hence the myriad quotes on her spanning 30 years.

'Myriad'? Where are they? I'm genuinely curious about what actors she does (and doesn't) like. But there doesn't seem to be much she's said on Lange's work.
Jess has always had a chip on her shoulder about Meryl. In her entire public life, I cannot recall her ever mentioning her. Streep was generous because she not only beat Lange, she went on to movie success while Jessica slowly fell apart.

Yes. I remember that Goldderby interview with her that was posted here: She seems out of it throughout it, but when the interviewer mentioned how unbeatable Streep was in '83 she sort of snaps. He then asks her what her favourite Streep performance is. That would've been a good opportunity for her to praise Streep, but she doesn't.

She immediately starts saying she doesn't have 'favourite performances' and says 'an actress who HAS inspired her is Kim Stanley'. Then she mentions her favourite Kim Stanley performance. It seemed sort of rude, or at least shade-y.

Perhaps she doesn't like Streep and didn't know how to respond. In a moment like that Streep at least would've said something like 'I loved her in FRANCES. I wouldn't have been as good'. Not necessarily true, but when backed into a corner it's natural to be polite. It's like mentioning how great the other nominees are in an Oscar acceptance speech: more a nicety than something sincere. That's why I'm a little skeptical about Streep's 'envy' of Lange (though would love a source). Whenever she mentioned her work it's either the interviewer whose brought her up or in relation to how she wishes she'd done SWEET DREAMS.

There doesn't seem to be any independent praise unlike for Bette Davis and Vanessa Redgrave. Maybe Streep does rate Lange's work; but, judging by that Goldderby interview, if she does, the feeling's not reciprocated.

by Anonymousreply 296May 8, 2018 5:43 AM

well said r296

I agree Lange seemed awkward when asked about her favorite Streep film. It would be so easy to say Sophie's Choice, everybody else does. Even if she resents that for depriving her of a Frances Oscar she could have easily spouted out another title and the interview would have been unmemorable.

by Anonymousreply 297May 8, 2018 6:32 AM

I've always wondered if Streep was offered Places in the Heart. She was Benton's go to actress after Kramer. She did Still of the Night for him even though she feels that she shouldn't have because she felt too called upon to just be beautiful in it. You'd think Benton would have offered her Places too.

by Anonymousreply 298May 8, 2018 6:34 AM

I think also these women are like night and day

Lange was always rough and more of a drinker

Streep was always regal and the good mom, stable marriage etc

That was public image but they are very different women and performers - both very talented

And this is just my observation over the years: Streep is extremely generous, Lange is self-involved and neurotic. I hope she gets a job again but currently, and this has been going on for almost a year, CAA cannot land her a gig.

by Anonymousreply 299May 8, 2018 6:39 AM

Streep is also very self-effacing. Even her last Oscar win where she kind of stops the standing ovation. I also once saw her at a Q and A for August: Osage County and they were introducing the cast one by one building to her. She snuck in with Margo Marindale and completely stopped any long entrance applause since she was already there when they said her name.
You'd think Benton would have offered her Places too.

After SOPHIE'S CHOICE she was hot. She might've been busy. Not just new projects, but she was a new mother, and then OUT OF AFRICA's filming apparently dragged on. She must've been at least considered for it, because after SOPHIE'S CHOICE, she was the go-to actress for anything remotely artsy.
Streep is extremely generous, Lange is self-involved and neurotic.

Yes. My thoughts too. Like in that Oscar video. She seems to be trying to quell the crowd almost. I can't imagine Lange doing that, she seems more the diva (which can be fun). Though she didn't get a standing ovation at her Best Actress win (she must've been the last actress not to, I think) and decidedly tepid applause.

Of course, a bitchy attitude might be nice for the fans of DL, but it's less endearing in the real world.

by Anonymousreply 301May 8, 2018 6:54 AM
Though she didn't get a standing ovation at her Best Actress win (she must've been the last actress not to, I think) and decidedly tepid applause.

Actually they very often don't stand for the Best Actress. I can think of Nicole Kidman not getting one. I doubt Emma Stone or Brie Larson did. JLaw admitted that they only stood because she fell up the stairs and took so long to get there that a a gradual standing ovation happened.

It is an odd little bit of sexism I've noticed in the ceremonies.

by Anonymousreply 302May 8, 2018 6:58 AM

I once saw Lange on a street refusing to sign an autograph. She was waiting for her car and a guy approached her. She just wouldn't do it. (I stopped to watch the interaction.) He kept begging and she kept refusing. It was odd. I would have signed it just to get him to go away.

by Anonymousreply 303May 8, 2018 6:59 AM

That reminds me K. Hepburn's criticism of Streep and Close -- but praise of Julia Roberts and Melanie Griffiths. That might seem odd, but I've read someone else say it was actually a backhanded compliment: she didn't praise Streep and Close because she saw them as competition, she could afford to praise the others because they weren't a threat to her stature. Interesting theory, I thought.

And it would explain Streep's generosity and Lange's lack of it: Streep is comfortable in her position, Lange who has never been as 'big' as her in any regard less so.

If Streep really did envy Lange she's had plenty of chances to say so. People are genuinely interested in finding out which of their peers the most celebrated person in any field admires. In fact, every single Lange thread on this website has either devolved into a Streep thread or died. As sort of The Number One interviewers do sometimes ask who she admires. Her usual answer seems to be Bette Davis, above all, not Jess.

by Anonymousreply 304May 8, 2018 7:06 AM

When Lange is asked in interviews what roles she regrets turning down or not getting, she always refrains from naming them, saying that it wouldn't be fair to the actresses who eventually played the roles. Contrast that with Streep, who freely talks about auditioning for King Kong and The Postman Always Rings Twice, or coveting Sweet Dreams. I wonder if that irks Lange to some extent. Hearing Streep tell anecdotes about HER roles and getting a lot of press out of it.

by Anonymousreply 305May 8, 2018 7:11 AM

I've read other stories about her, here and other places. That's happened on more than one occasion I think. And I could've sworn I saw photos in the Daily Mail of her what looked like almost berating someone.

by Anonymousreply 306May 8, 2018 7:11 AM
When Lange is asked in interviews what roles she regrets turning down or not getting, she always refrains from naming them, saying that it wouldn't be fair to the actresses who eventually played the roles.

But it isn't. It's widely known in many cases and not an uncommon question to ask of any actor in an interview. All you have to do is offer a compliment. "I'd have loved that role, but XYZ was great in it."
Contrast that with Streep, who freely talks about auditioning for King Kong and The Postman Always Rings Twice, or coveting Sweet Dreams. I wonder if that irks Lange to some extent. Hearing Streep tell anecdotes about HER roles and getting a lot of press out of it.

Streep's always complimented Lange when she mentioned them though. And admitted she wouldn't have been right for either KING KONG or POSTMAN. But that brings up a point: are her words about Lange politeness or honesty?

by Anonymousreply 307May 8, 2018 7:16 AM

Somewhat OT: But is the Alex Forrest-esque Jessica Lange fan whose been posting all over here -- and I'm certain clearing cookies and voting multiple times of that poll (the only way to explain Lange's bizarrely high lead) -- the same person who was running all over goldderby?

by Anonymousreply 308May 8, 2018 12:34 PM

I saw both parts 1 and 2 of Angels in America on April 25. I had an aisle seat and Jessica Lange attended both performances, sitting 3 rows behind me, also on the aisle. For a big star she seemed surprisingly casual. I've seen many other celebrities who seem self conscious and even fearful of the approach of strangers and have people with them who shield them from others. Like me, she spent most of the (4) intermissions standing in the aisle next to her seat, conversing occasionally with people she seemed to know and at other times turning and scanning the crowd for minutes at a time in the way one does at the theater. She was with a man who mostly just sat and looked at his phone. Conclusion: on this day at least, not a diva.

by Anonymousreply 309May 8, 2018 1:04 PM

I don't think she really makes grand entrances, assuming anyone would afford her such a thing. But I've read autograph stories on other occasions. She just doesn't 'do' them. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but most people sign them to get them off their back. Not Lange, who'll apparently give a lecture instead. I'm sure she has her reasons, though I can't imagine her being inundated with requests. Most people would just not notice her / not recognize her / walk past her. I doubt anyone under forty is even familiar with her film work.

by Anonymousreply 310May 8, 2018 1:25 PM

R296 The "independent praise" happened when Streep told Jane Pauley that she always tells her agent they should get Jessica Lange instead of her. Out of ALL of her peers, Streep chose to mention Lange yet again.

You seem rather neurotic in your attempts to try and prove that Streep doesn't think Lange is as spectacular as she's already said, over and over.

Seems like you can't take Streep praising Lange. You even go as far as making up things - "the interviewer mentioned Lange" - and attacking Lange, lol.

You have to control for Datalounge though: Anywhere else and Comrade Susan Sandinista would have at least three percent more and be maybe 9.1%.

Most people don't really care about her or any other celebrities political opinions. The sheer hatred for her here is an anomaly.

by Anonymousreply 321May 8, 2018 2:42 PM

I understand the widespread disdain for Sarandon. It's not the political activism, it's the stupidity and hypocrisy. She claims to be a liberal and a champion for women, gays, etc and then did everything she could to destroy Hillary Clinton's chances of being elected in 2016, mostly by promoting standard line Republican propaganda against her. It was ok to be for Sanders prior to the convention but she continued her nonsense afterwards and it was all to the benefit of Donald Trump.

I don't disagree actually. But the hatred for her here is unique. Much more intense than other forums, for whatever reason. Most people don't really look to actors for political advice.

Had this thread been done back in 2015, she'd definitely be doing much better.

Aw. Look who's blocked, lol.

R318, well, it's not as if UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Jessica Lange is not generous. She just chooses to spend her time doing more fulfilling activities than playing the Hollywood game.

Despite all her best efforts, the Lange-hating twat has been exposed as a troll. The dumb bitch is grayed-out all over this thread. Every negative reply about Lange is from this ridiculous twat.
R303 I once saw Lange on a street refusing to sign an autograph. She was waiting for her car and a guy approached her. She just wouldn't do it. (I stopped to watch the interaction.) He kept begging and she kept refusing. It was odd.

Maybe he follows her around town and asks her for autographs twice a day? Most people who ask for autographs are people who sell them...not those who really want to keep them.

I did ask Genie Francis for an autograph once. I had her make it out to my sister, and sent it to her. For a while we used to watch GENERAL HOSPITAL together every day after school.

by Anonymousreply 328May 9, 2018 8:36 AM

possibly r328. The thing was it was almost getting scary. The guy kept asking and she kept refusing. He seemed a little unbalanced. I sort of stood and watched wondering if it was going to break out into a fight and I'd have to call the cops. I almost wanted her to sign it just for her own safety.

by Anonymousreply 329May 9, 2018 8:42 AM

I wonder if she sensed he was unhinged from the start. You do not want to imprint on a potential stalker in any way by giving them ANYTHING.

Plenty of celebrities don't sign autographs. Paul Newman spotted signing them after someone asked him for one when he was at a urinal.

Meryl admires Judy Davis.

by Anonymousreply 333May 9, 2018 9:48 AM

R327 It even mentions Dungaway, so you know it must be Matt.

by Anonymousreply 334May 9, 2018 1:30 PM
What Lange has going for her, in addition to being a very fine actress, is that she has a star persona. Streep, Keaton, Field etc. are fine looking women, but they're not great beauties. And they have a little bit of a straight-laced vibe. Lange was/is silky and sensual, and she has that kind of blonde, airy vulnerability that viewers really embrace. And as she's matured she's also pulled on a meaner, steely vibe in the Ryan Murphy projects, which is impressive.
It's not that she's the very very best actress in the world or the ultimate movie beauty, but her talent and her looks work together to make each become more than they are, individually.
She's marvelous...what more do you want?

All of this, R76.

No other actress, oh OK except for Meryl, was a bigger star than me in the 1980's. And by God no one had a drop of the sex appeal I displayed:

I know this is counter to the "wisdom" of DL, but I suspect Meryl and Glenn are very good friends. I also suspect that Meryl is open and kind and generous to most actors. I guess I'd have to put Jane Fonda at the top of that list too, because Meryl and Jane are politically close. I think Meryl doesn't like divas or "difficult" people. She will try to accommodate them, but once she has made the effort, and the continue to act like asses, that's it for her. At least that's my take.

by Anonymousreply 341May 9, 2018 2:08 PM

And none of the fine ladies above, or for that matter any actress since would ever even dare to take on a role like China Blue in Crimes of Passion. Sure, I wanted to back out after I signed on and Ken Russell threatened to sue me, so having no choice I took it on with everything I had.

I don't think Debra Winger or Susan Sarandon are people Meryl would walk across the street for. But I think she admires the rest of them. Meryl envies no one. When Susan went crazy for Bernie and attacked Hillary, she became DEAD to Meryl! DEAD!!!!

by Anonymousreply 343May 9, 2018 2:11 PM

[341] Don't know about Jane Fonda being close to Meryl politically. I'd say politically Fonda is more close to Lange, Sarandon & Spacek. After all Fonda, Lange & Spacek appeared before congress in 1984 (or was it 1985) in relation to the hardships that farmers face. Mind you they had all made films relating to this so it was probably close to their hearts.

by Anonymousreply 344May 9, 2018 2:12 PM

R344 I think this whole group is all pretty close politically.

R346 what kind of surgery did Faye get that made her look white adjacent? I can't pinpoint what it is but she's looked that way for 30 years now.

by Anonymousreply 348May 10, 2018 7:51 AM

I have lost track of her surgeries at this point. I think she got all new teeth a decade or so ago. And it...did something.

R341, Not so close apparently:
She tells me she’s “pretty reclusive” and can “count her closest friends on two hands”. I ask if she’s still good friends with Meryl Streep.

Hunny, I saw Jane Fonda on Ellen, and she's had more work done...and looks good! But in the close ups when she is moving her head around you can tell. Her cheeks. And yet, unlike Faye Dunaway and so many others, including Barbra Streisand and Cher, Jane manages to not look like a chipmunk. I hate the way so many women go the way of Wildenstein, and become catlike. I'd love to know who Fonda goes to for her work. She just turned 80. She was on Ellen promoting a movie, and has to work the next morning.

Lange, of course. And it boils my blood.

Still find it strange OP would exclude Sally Field -- two Best Actress wins by 1984 and Lincoln. I can't understand how Jessica Lange is beating G.

Anyway when G wins her Oscar I wonder if she'll be more of a threat to M for old lady roles.

by Anonymousreply 361February 1, 2019 3:28 PM

Why Dataloungers think it's ETERNALLY hilarious to pretend prestige Baby Boomer actresses are bitchy drag divas sniping at each other is something I will never understand.

by Anonymousreply 362February 1, 2019 3:33 PM

Well, Jessica Lange is now essentially a drag act and she's no stranger to casting shade.

The rest of them, no.

by Anonymousreply 363February 1, 2019 3:34 PM

The most photogenic...which would be all of them, compared to her...

by Anonymousreply 364February 1, 2019 3:35 PM

Gurl, R364, have you them recently? M's held up better than all of them except Sarandon.

by Anonymousreply 365February 1, 2019 3:36 PM

Why me, of course

by Anonymousreply 366February 1, 2019 4:20 PM

Meryl Streep and Jessica Lange, when young, were both blonde and conventionally pretty. It makes sense that MS would compare herself most to JL.

Coal Miner's Daughter came out in 1980, starring Beverly D'Angelo as Patsy Cline. BD did her own singing in CMD. For some reason, they made BD look kind of terrible in that movie.

Sweet Dreams came out in 1985. Not nearly as good a movie as Coal Miner's Daughter. I think a lot of people compared JL's performance to Beverly D'Angelo's. BD could have been made up to look better in "Sweet Dreams."
