Per @NicolleDWallace the first thing Trump asked when the Access Hollywood tape came out was about the math, meaning when he was married to Melania? Hm. Someone should try to get their hands on their prenuptial agreement and look for an infidelity clause...

by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 26, 2018 10:06 PM |
Another advantage to this Stormy mess is that Trump can't use Melania (and Barron) to drum up public support. She covered for him with the Access Hollywood tapes, calling them "boytalk," but there's no way in hell she's going to go out there and sell bareback sex with a porn star while she cared their infant son as no biggie. She isn't getting in front of a reporter or crowd for any fucking thing now. However he might have used her as a PR toll is now neutered.

From twitter:
#MakeAdulteryGreatAgain
When Obama was in office in 2011, only 30% of evangelicals told pollsters they would forgive a president's immoral behavior.
Now, under Trump, it's 72%.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 26, 2018 10:27 PM |
R20, she'd come across as a total doormat, especially for the way she defended him during the campaign.
She doesn't want to be seen as a doormat or kept woman. She faked a college education and degree in a respectable field. She made a big deal about "turning down" Donald several times. She immediately took to dressing as a stylish, sophisticated first lady as opposed to the hooker turned Barbazon model styling she used to flaunt. She wants to be seen as elegant and intelligent and someone Trump is with because she's quality, not some trophy.
Her only way out is to feign total ignorance of his disgusting behavior, say she's leaving him because she was the good dutiful wife who had no idea he was a lying cheat, ignore the majority of people who don't believe her, and set herself up with a fat old ugly real billionaire.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 26, 2018 10:40 PM |

Indeed, that Vatican visit could not have happened post-Stormy. And I imagine the UK State Visit is now subject to any number of new 'scheduling conflicts.'
Lest we forget, this is the mood which precedes the supposed meeting with Kim Jong Un. Read yesterday on DL a link about a serious detailed briefing for 'POTUS' on the geopolitical status quo - in which he shouted often, 'I don't agree!' (The 'fucking moron' meeting.)
It's hard to see how this 'administration' can possibly sustain itself. And yet I gather 'approval ratings' are still, incredibly, adequate. Somehow 'POTUS' can still tell himself he's untouchable.

by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 27, 2018 2:28 PM |
I'm going to start a new thread so we can all help write a play. I'm calling it "Cambridge Anal." It is a romantic comedy where an unattractive woman with an unfortunate forehead, meets an unattractive man with acne lesions on his face. They both have long greasy hair.
(Scene: Rebekkah's bedroom. They are lying in her bed drinking vodka straight from the bottle. Rebekkah is giggling uncontrollably at a joke Stevie (she calls him Stevie) has just told her.) Suddenly she turns towards him breathing Vodka and onion breath in his face, and rakes her long laquered red finger nails over the matted hair on his chest.
Rebekkah: But will it hurt?
Stevie: Nah. it's just a game. I promise. Now here Put this bag over your head
Rebekkah: No you put the bag over your head.
Stevie: (loud belch)
Rebekkah: (concerned ) Are you OK, wuvvie dovie?
Stevie: Yeah, hon, I'm fine. Just felt a little queasy. Must have been too much cheese on my burger... Now here! Put the fucking bag over your head.
Rebekkah: No!!! I won't until you do it too.
Stevie: OK, OK!!!! Fine!! We'll both do it!!!!
(They both put bags over their heads. The bags have teensy slits for eye holes.)
Rebekkah: Oh! I just thought of something!
Stevie (sighs ) Now what?????
Rebekkah: Hon, did you remember to deposit that check I gave you this morning?
Stevie: Yeah, yeah, it's all taken care off. Thanks, Babe
Rebekkah: At first I thought $10 Million was a lot for some mouse pads, but if you think we really need them.....
Stevie: I told you! These are specially designed to pic up data fro the mouse as people scroll around.. We'll capture unlimited amounts of data!!!!
Rebekkah: (sighs) OK, Hon! I just want to make sure you have everything you need....... ((said in her sultry voice.)
Stevie (pushing her bagged head towards his crotch.) Yeah well. Let's take care of business. It's time you lose your virginity. You calam you never blew a guy, so this is your big day!
Rebekkah giggles as she lowers her bagged head towards a nest of matted smelly hair)
Stevie (moans with anticipation) Pay no attention to those skin tags, Baby. Those aren't warts, they're skin tags. Had 'em for years.
(As the scene goes dark we see Kelly Anne quietly open the door, entering the bedroom, dressed in her black leather Playboy Bunny outfit, complete with 6 inch heels and mesh stockings, her whip poised to meet Rebekkah's cottage cheese wrinkled thighs)

R53 and everyone else, I don't trust these polls. And I have to wonder how they are polling, when they polled to get that result, and what kind of survey instrument they're using. If this is a result of the NRA propaganda after Parkland and they're polling is skewed towards particular demographic then I can understand it, but I find it meaningless. r46....Its rumored it will be Scalise. Do you think he would be better ? The only thing I can say about Scalise is that the gunman missed.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 27, 2018 3:07 PM |
Scalise would be a disaster. He is a rigid ideological bastard and he would not be able to get people on the same page. The Speaker has a real task in trying to keep all the members marching in the same direction and using his judgement and shrewd cunning to be able to maneuver and navigate and plot how to get issues to the floor, strategize how they get the votes, when or if to table items, schedule debates, manage hearings, etc. lease keep in mind. The house, on a day to day basis, has more power than the Senate. They have the power of the purse. They have the power to declare wars. You do not want Scalise there. IMO you have McCarthy as competition for Scalise. Mc Carthy is dumb as a post. Truly dumb. But he is very close to Trump. They get along. McCarthy was Ryan's pet poodle. He's not strong or smart but he follows orders. I think Trump will prefer him to Scalise. I also think the Koch brothers will play a role. They own Ryan. Literally. So we'll see if he's allowed to leave the field, and if so, who his replacement will be. Just pray it isn't Scalise. He will run the remaining "moderates" out of the party. I hear you R56.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 27, 2018 4:00 PM |
I wonder if guys like Ryan believe leaving the sinking ship saves them from the public humiliation for being charged with treason, collusion, or whatever related to Trump's and the GOP's crimes? I do hope they are not getting off the hook that way!
by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 27, 2018 4:02 PM |

Run and hide Paul Ryan! Run and hide!

Well, why is Ryan not afraid of the Deplorables when previous posters claim that the conservative senators will not turn on Trump (for show) during the mid-term election, because they are too afraid of the GOP's Deplorable base?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 27, 2018 4:14 PM |
Ryan is looking at the numbers. He knows he will not be Speaker in 2019. He also stands a very good chance of losing his district election. So if that is the case, he will leave. After all. The Kochs have big plans for him. As I think about it. There is every chance that if Trump goes, Pence will become President and chose Ryan to be VP. Then the Kochs will completely own government.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 27, 2018 4:17 PM |
Ryan does not want to be Speaker in November, considering Republicans have a strong probability of losing the majority. Trump will blame him, not himself. He'll lose some support from colleages. He doesn't want to give the gavel to Pelosi after being humiliated and his power very significantly narrows.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 27, 2018 5:02 PM |
Ryan IS to blame for a lot of shit that's been happening. He's always been a coward, prefers "working behind the scenes". Think of that guy who dressed up like a woman so he could jump in a lifeboat while the Titanic went down. The GOP assholes will measure him as an effective Speaker. He's helped destroy his party and his government...n but he will not destroy this country. Begone, Satan Ryan!!!!!

He cited his frustration with getting anything done concerning pubic policy discussions around various issues. In particular he said he had legislation he had drawn up for healthcare changes and he couldn't even get anyone to pay attention. Both in Congress and the Media all anyone talks about is Trump. He said to the reporter from CNN or MSNBC or whoever, that all you guys want to talk about is Stormy Daniels and I want to talk about healthcare. It's all Trump all the time. It's pointless. I can't compete with it. he was very disgusted. I do't know who he is. Costello. I probably disagree with him on everything. But on this he is right. There is too much "shiny object" journalism" and not enough discussion of what is going on with policy decisions around really important stuff. We wonder how we have so many poorly informed people in this country, and it is exactly because the Media chases profits and fails to inform.

"Melania comes forward an d tells the public that Trump gave her an STD by sleeping with Stormy, or some other prositution whore,"
This line of thinking really annoys me. People assume that because Stormy is an Adult Film Actress, she works regularly as a sex worker and indiscriminately allows any man' penis inside of her. There's a big difference between someone like Stormy Daniels and the stereotypical common street whore who picks up tricks on corners to maintain their drug habits. They are spiritually lost and have no self-respect and simply doing what they believe necessary for daily survival. Stormy, (and many others in her business) is an astute business woman who takes her job seriously. Therefore, she is far more careful and conscientious about her health and probably gets checked regularly every three months, or whenever necessary, (whether it be more or less than three months). Because she is a true professional, a lot of men would most likely be safer having unprotected sex with Stormy than some woman they'd indiscriminately pick up in a bar or off a personals ad. If anything, Stormy put herself at greater risk by having unprotected sex with Trump than he did with her, (from what we've all learned about him). And I would bet she got herself to a clinic to get checked out very soon after.

Plus PPP just had a poll where is is back down below 40. I wouldn't put too much stock in polling, he is still historically low among D's and I's and more importantly women.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | March 27, 2018 7:49 PM |
R75 The stock market isn't going to help much longer to prop this fool up... Interest rates are rising. That alone is going to turn the stock market trend down even without trade wars and other Trump shenanigans.

The optimism about our economy is evaporating.

CNN and other media don't want the DJT shit-show to end as long as it is profitable. And the Stormy and Karen sagas are pure icing. Much of the public, particularly a hefty portion of Trump's base, adore hearing about sex scandals and related gossip.
It is shameful that some serious international problems are largely ignored to make room for Trump's old adulterous behavior and the sinister payoffs involved. Domestically, environmental destruction is in full force, huge deficits are being added, interest rates will start skyrocketing, far-right, pro-corporate judges are getting appointed at an alarming rate, the administration, including the cabinet, are incompetent and/corrupt, and discrimination in the name of religious freedom is growing. Illegal decrees against trans serving in the military is an example of other actions to come.

This is utter hogwash.
Costello lost his safe gerrymandered seat and would have to run in a new district that's labelled "likely Dem."
And blaming the media because you cant advance legislation? Pussy.

It will not be a sigh of relief when/if Trump goes and Pence is installed. Trump's daily drama will be gone; but Pence is a rigid, right-wing ideologue on too many important issues. He'll be controlled in emotions, and the Republicans in Congress love him. They'll make a mistake in assuming that all Trump core voters share the same enthusiasm about Pence. Part of Trump's appeal to them was his unorthodox, absurd antics. Pence is viewed as pure neo-conservative establishment and not charismatic.

R86 I saw Costello interviewed by Katie Tur filling in for Chuck Turd on MTP Daily. He seems like a basically decent guy. He is a Republican. He is a Conservative. I don't expect a conversion. He did make some good points. He seems to have a conscience. He is for gun safety, for environmental issues, and a couple of other things but he did vote in favor of the tax cut and thinks it was good for the economy.
All I'm saying is that if he is an example of a particular breed of Republican suburbanite who is ready to run away from Trump it's a good sign. And his frustration with the complete lack of substantive discussions of policy is something I share. So what ever his reason is for leaving, I'm glad he said some of the things he said. He told Katie that while he disagreed with Obama on policy issues, he felt Obama was a good role model, and he ripped Trump and said he was not. In fact he said he didn't want to expose his kids to Trump.

Some good points there, r94. I thought he was also frustrated with House colleagues. Ryan and company won't allow certain, needed proposed legislation brought to the floor and debated, because they know it may pass. They will only offer legislation that has overwhelming GOP support alone. McConnell in the Senate acts similar, but the GOP majority there is plurality of just a few. The whole set-up promotes partisanship, and doesn't allow much debate and compromise to get important matters resolved.

I don't know if there's an actual story up somewhere yet, but Alex Van Der Zwaan, that lawyer who pled guilty to lying to the special counsel, was in court again or something tonight. In court documents about his case, he was noted to have recorded conversations he had with Rick Gates and someone labeled Person A. Person A was described as an associate of Paul Manafort. Some reporters are pretty sure Person A is Konstantin Kilimnik.
In the filings tonight, Van Der Zwaan said Rick Gates told him Person A was a former Russian intelligence officer.
So I guess their defense will now be "well yeah, I mean, he WAS a Russian spy but he told us he wasn't anymore" or something.
This is the guy I'm reading on Twitter:

I would love to be the games night host in a gay senior living center.

by Anonymous | reply 119 | March 28, 2018 2:30 PM |
R118, I admit I was really pissed off when I heard that. REALLY pissed off. To this day I don't think either Bush or Cheney has left the country because in other parts of the world they are still regarded as war criminals. It would have given me enormous satisfaction, especially for Cheney to go down. IMO Cheney and Rove were and still are pure evil.
But now, I have to grudgingly admit I understand why she said that. First of all, Pelosi doesn't unilaterally make decisions and pronouncements like that particular one all on her own. She listens and she discusses, trying to build consensus, and trying to cooperate with the President, a member of her own party, and she's been pretty damned good at taking the "temperature " of the House.
She was also conferring with the new President, Obama. When she said "Impeachment is off the table" it was the result of deliberations that included many people. We could have spent a lot, if not most of Congress's time dealing with the hearings, the investigation and the impeachment of Bush/Cheney, or we could move forward. Look backward or move forward. (And since she would get no bi-partisan cooperation it would look more like a political vendetta than justice.)
The Economy was in freefall. We were in the midst of a financial crisis, bleeding millions of jobs, housing foreclosures, major bankruptcies and the loss of 40% of our personal wealth. Our crisis had international impplications. World banking and financial services interests were affected, big time. We look back now, after having survived, and stabilized the economy, and we forget how terrible it was. It was fucking scary. From about 2007 to 2010 we were up to our necks in shit.
From the time he took office until the GOP took over Congress in 2011, Obama and Pelosi accomplished a lot. (think how much more they could have done if we had turned out to vote in the mid terms instead of giving it away.) There was a cost to that. The fact that Obama had to get stimulus money from Congress, he had to stabilize the banking and financial services industries, had to stop Ford, Chrysler and General Motors from going belly up, and deliver some relief to the home mortgages industries to stop the foreclosures and prevent more of them.
Obama famously told his staff, "I don't want to just be remembered for what I prevented. I want to be remembered for something I initiated." So Healthcare. He and Pelosi made that happen and they did it because they rightly attached it to the economic recovery. There is so much more we could talk about in terms of what was accomplished but I can safely say that most of it, would not have happened if we were involved in a lengthy impeachment process.
There is a cost to everything. A lot of the people who got on board with the legislative packages that got passed would not have if we had gone down the road to Impeachment. So even though it would be enormously satisfying, it would have been a short term gain at enormous cost. I'm glad they used good judgement and decided not to go there. I seriously she would say that about Trump. He is a traitor, a threat to national security and he represents the interests of a foreign enemy of the United States.

I think I've figured out Trump's strategy. He's going to ask for trial by combat.
"(Reuters) - A little-known former prosecutor with a doctorate in medieval history will play a central role on U.S. President Donald Trump’s legal team, as many top-tier lawyers shy away from representing him in a probe into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election. "
by Anonymous | reply 122 | March 28, 2018 3:28 PM |
R120, I think you've got your timeline mixed up. Pelosi said "Impeachment is off the table" upon the Democratic sweep in Nov. 2006, two years before Obama was elected (and three months before he officially announced his candidacy) and two years before the economy was, as you say, in freefall. She was announcing her priorities as leader of the House Democrats, who were about to be in the majority.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | March 28, 2018 4:17 PM |
^Nancy also said that with a 49-49 split in the Senate (with 2 independents--Sanders and Liebrman). That's too close to risk an impeachment.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | March 28, 2018 4:38 PM |
Ouch. Thank you! You're right. Impeachment wasn't an option in 2009, because we had a new POTUS. I know there was talk of investigating and prosecuting for war crimes, and I conflated that with Pelosi's "Impeachment is off the table" pronouncement. I've linked the article in the NYT that talks about her restoring civility and bi-partisanship to the House in 2007.

We know, first hand that crimes have/and are being committed.....where is law enforcement ? I want Mueller to complete his investigation, to do it right, and to make it stick....however....some people...like Kushner, junior....need to be arrested......charge them with a crime to remove them and continue the investigation. Thats how it works in the real world, and I think thats why people are frustrated. If someone is suspected of robbing a bank...they did it right in front of everyone.....do you think the police would say "you go about your business while we investigate"....Fuck no....they would be lucky they werent shot on the spot. R151, you are wrong, indictments lead to court trials. Do not confuse this with Congress' ability to impeach and convict. These are two separate actions. Clinton was indicted for lying and negotiated the loss of his attorney's Bar license. It was a plea deal before he was Impeached and NOT convicted by the Senate. Mueller is very much in control of prison time here. He is also fire walled with coordinating counts in state courts so that Trump's pardoning ability is rendered useless. Mueller is very much in control.
As above whenever I see Melania I see Medea. I see her taking out Ivana's children to protect her own. Melania is the most tragic figure in this tragedy of Donald's hubris.

I can't believe that we are still battling back against this. Yes, he can prosecute whatever crimes he uncovers, whether they have anything to do with Russia or not. Whether he can prosecute Trump is still very much an open question. Leon Jawarski, the Watergate Special Prosecutor thought he could not bring charges against Nixon (but could name Nixon as an un-indicted co-conspirator). Ken Starr believed that he could prosecute Bill Clinton. (He was operating under a different appointment authority than Jawarski or Mueller.) Whether Mueller can is not clear. But, he can certainly name him as an un-indicted co-conspirator and watch all hell break loose.

With or without said new consort she will be so tainted by unprecedented toxicity that the role won't be made available. No-one will be a 'clean' representative of this 'Presidency', because it isn't possible.
GWB and Laura are occasionally tolerated public tokens, with his behaviour ever more notable, but no-one sees them as dignified representatives of an era; more the unusual relatives who can't quite not be invited. BTW. While all this Russia shit is going on, North Korea's crazy leader made his first visit to mainland China to meet with their president. Now he is going to meet with the leader of South Korea at the end of April. then he will meet with Trump in May. Now if you thin this is good news for the USA you'd be wrong. When President Shithole proclaimed his opposition to the Trans Pacific Partnership, and we walked away from it, it allowed China to move in to the preeminent role. If China succeeds in getting North Korea and South Korea working together and working with China, it is going to have serious, negative implications for our economy. Bad ones. In short, the world will go on without us. All this crap about Tariffs and a trade war with China right now, is real stupid. So while Trump's EPA and his Education Department fuck up, and he destabilizes healthcare, ad the GOP Congress announces that they will tackle cutting Medicare and SS and Medicaid in 2018, as Paul Ryan and Bitch McConnell insist they will, we can look at our MAGA "foreign policy" and prepare for a real shit mess. By the time they're through, the United States will be a third rate power and we will feel the effects acutely.

By the time Trump is finished, Russia will dominate Europe and the Middle East, and much of Africa, and China will dominate the Korean Peninsula, Far East and Pacific Rim countries. We will be lucky if we can stay on decent terms with Canada, Mexico and parts of South & Central America.
My point is that we really need to be paying attention. The Cable and Network TV go for the ratings. They will gloss over Kim Jong Un's meetings, or cover them in a very superficial way, but we need to really look at what's going on globally to fully understand the crap Trump is shoveling.
We need to win in the Mid Terms whether he gets impeached or not. We have to win so we can hold legitimate hearings and begin enforcing ethics violations, ferret out corruption and conflicts of interest. We need to investigate investigate investigate and expose everything they're trying to do. In effect we have to paralyze this Presidency.
We have to hold our own version of "Benghazi" hearings into every single federal agency and department head. We have to stop the appointment of reactionary judges, and fuck with their budgets. We have so much work to do, but it's necessary. We coasted along doing very little for too long.
Now we have to step up, and we have to be there after the votes are counted to make sure Congress does what we need them to do. Republicans ignore us and lie. Dems aren't much better, but they're all we have and they're at least open to pressure. They might want to sing Kumbaya and let's all try to get along, but there is no way we can even consider that. Not an option. We have to adopt a scorched earth policy and dismantle this version of the Republican Party.

The Special Counsel is an appointment made by the Justice Department and the role does have investigative and prosecutING powers.
The House can hold an impeachment trial, and the Senate hold the power of convict and remove.
Mueller's role should not be confused with Congressional actions, if pursued. Congress can use evidence found by Mueller or DOJ, but Mueller's responsibilities don't include undertaking impeachment. He can file charges against the President (indictment of a sitting President) if he deems warranted and accepted by Rosenberg. If DJT contests, that may become a constitutional crisis that reaches the Supreme Court. They would have the final word on such a challenge.

R186 The problem with the US is it is already physically far away from the "Old World" where the economic action will be for the next century. Of course, the US has the whole "New World" to develop if they want, but their own prejudice and fear of non-white people makes that impossible. Meanwhile, China has a going out policy to encourage their people and companies to find opportunities outside China. MAGA people are stupid if they think US can remain the world superpower by hiding behind a wall obsessing only about itself.

Just having military bases around the world and controlling the petro dollar were enough during the Cold War, but the world has changed, and playing the big bully gets the US left behind. "Russia can have the Middle East." is one of the dumbest idea I've read lately. No. You do not cede even an inch of ground. There is a strategic necessity for us to be in all these places influencing the leaders and the people in other countries. Anything that makes your proven enemy stronger is not ever a sensible strategy. If I had to guess who will emerge from the competition for primacy in a scenario between Russia and China, it would be China. Putin doesn't care about stability. He is all about chaos and opportunities, not about governing. He is a wrecking crew who will be a global force for exploitation. In this one thing we have a commonality of purpose. China is about governance and stability. They are about economic dominance and financial success. Russia doesn't give a fuck. Russia is really a rogue nation state. So no. We aren't suppose to cede power to either of them but most certainly not to Russia.

I was thinking earlier, though: imagine Putin just rolls his tanks into Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. Would Trump join NATO and counter attack? I don’t think he would. There is something going on with him that makes him a dangerous Russian asset. I hope that after he leaves office, that they check the entire White House for listening devices.

[quote] The House can hold an impeachment trial, and the Senate hold the power of convict and remove.
No, the House cannot and will not hold an "impeachment trial." Let's try and be precise in discussing the terms we use. It is not in any sense a "trial." The House Judiciary Committee will draw up articles of impeachment, which will be voted on by that Committee after hearings. Those articles that receive the support of a majority of the members of the committee will be referred to the whole House of Representatives for a vote up or down. The work of the House in an impeachment matter is in the nature of a grand jury. Essentially, the House will determine if there is probable cause to remove the President from office.
If the House impeaches the President (it only requires a simple majority), then the Senate will hold a trial, presided over by Chief Justice Roberts. At the conclusion of the trial the Senate will vote to either remove or not remove the President. To prevail and remove the President there must be a two-thirds majority or 67 votes.

I've debated whether to say anything because it feels like we're all friends on this thread and I don't want to cause any trouble. But I decided this was important enough, I think. If anyone follows Tea Pain, Mensch and some of the others in that group, know that they were fooled by a guy going as PatriotLou on Twitter. He claimed to have inside info and was making predictions and some seemed to come true. He just outted himself as a guy who made the account to prove the others don't have sources. They were private messaging Lou and taking his shit as gospel and then tweeting stuff out like they knew something was coming, etc. It was a con and they fell for it. That doesn't prove they don't have sources, but it does prove they are willing to take gossip from some anonymous person and then try to convince the rest of us they have inside info.
Also, Counterchekist, a friend of Mensch's, is not ex-military. He's been doxxed and his full name is online, but I'm not posting that. I will say he's in his 30's and he lives with his mom and sells surf boards. He was found to have been on sites for years pretending to be a Vietnam Vet, then an Iraq vet, etc. He's not. He does do Revolutionary War re-enactments.
Like I said, I am truly not trying to cause trouble, but I'm sure a lot of us follow the same people on Twitter and they need to be taken with a big grain of salt, I think. I hope they're right. I hope they're right about everything! But I'd just be careful.

Apart from Mensch (who I unfollowed ages ago), I've become increasingly cynical about the others. Sometimes they even seem to be spreading disinformation.
On another topic, did anyone else see (on Twitter) that apparently a 'senior WH source' told the Russians that the 60 diplomats expelled by the USA in response to the poisoning in the UK can simply be replaced by the Russians? He also filed another one against Paul Ryan a day or two ago.

First Paragraph: Agree. Seth Abramson at present is one of the most reliable. And for newbies who might be reading, (this has been posted before), add these names to your list: Kyle Griffin, Malcolm Nance, Clint Watts, Benjamin Wittes, David Corn, David Frum, and Joy Reid. (yes, all MSNBC, but they've been continually proving themselves). Also, Walter Schaub and Richard Painter for matters having to do with ethics; and Tony Schwartz and David Cay Johnston for dead-on analysis of Trump.
Second Paragraph: that sounds very plausible. As long as Trump is President, I think "negotiations" needs to always be put in quotes because it's all a rather futile waste. What's the point of passing laws about sanctions when Trump can't be bothered to enforce them? Everything we hear in regards to it is all for show. I won't be surprised if some NYT or Wapo article comes out within a couple months telling us the "negotiations" are pre-scripted by both sides beforehand.

R215, I don't think Mueller could legally coerce a member of Congress because it would taint his case. I mean he can do that within the framework of the investigation in terms of filing charges but not to get them to impeach. he can't tell Paul Ryan "I know you've been getting payoffs from Russia Oligarchs to leave Trump alone, but I'm going to charge you unless you start Impeachment proceedings.' He can tell Paul Ryan "I know you've been getting payoffs from Russian Oligarchs and were indicting you. We can go esasier on you if you give us the names of other members who are being paid off too."

R243, It's because it was standard operating procedure for Trump the Businessman do engage in shady dealings and he has done it for years with impunity. He and his gang made no distinction between running for public office and his business practices. He engages in the magical thinking that he has done nothing wrong, refusing to call it Money laundering for example, and refusing to recognize the quid pro quo relationships he has with various of these bastards as illegal and a conflict of interest.
Even now, he probably believes he can side step this investigation the way he has so many others, with some fancy legal maneuvering. He refuses to understand what he's up against and he' thinking like a mobster (which is what he is) instead of thinking like an elected official. He thinks he's being slick, but he and his family stand a good chance of losing everything. Rather what never fails to shock me about this gruesome crew is not so much the slackness, but the sheer sociopathic arrogance. (Of course the two overlap.) The self-confidence from these self-styled masters of the universe that they could, with embedded help from a major formerly hostile foreign power, cut corners and ride roughshod over custom and precedent, sheerly from self-interest and greed.
And presume of course getting away with it, because being the biggest smartest men on the planet, they just will. (Not paying taxes, or contractors, or lawyers, makes Trump 'smart.' He could shoot someone and get away with it. These are mere hints of the prevailing mindset.)

R249, are you fucking serious? "It's bad now but if we do anything it could get orse..." WTF. Seriously. WTF. No. YOU meet this with overpowering force. YOu indict and convict and strip the fuckers of all their assets. And you start going after the little shits out here who think they can bully, threaten, and intimidate with impunity. The rank and file Deplorables
operate from fear. They are cowards. You expose them and lean on them hard and they will cave in. The things you're worried about them doing they are already doing. We have been dealing with these fucking militias and assholes since CLinton was POTUS. Before that we had an active KKK presence in most cities. In the 50's the fucking KKK was endorsing people to run for office. They were pretty fucking open.
So, according to your logic, we should have never had a Civil Rights Movement because, " OMG things are bad now and they will get worse?" Or when women were imprisoned and tortured and bullied and harassed and illegally locked away because they wanted the right to vote we should have said, "no, no it could get worse.!"
Look. Nothing is "getting worse." Bad shit has always been out here. It is the 24/7 news cycle and new technology & social media that allows us to find out about it in real time, whereas before it was hidden and not discussed and we only find out about it decades later when social historians write about it.
If it weren't for television in the 60's and 70's there would have never been progress in Civil Rights, the anti war movement, and women's equality. Gay Rights benefit from all of that history too. After what we have been through in this country, in human society, should we cower and hide in our closets and say, "Ooohhh! It could get worse?"
You need your brain realigned, asshole.

They’ve BEEN out for revenge, ever since Bill Clinton dared to get elected. They assumed that after Reagan, the country was theirs and Clinton's appeal made their heads explode. (Never mind that Clinton was essentially a Republican; all they could see was the 'D' after his name.)
We’ve been paying the price ever since. That’s when they sold their souls to the evil. That’s when they started playing really dirty. Nixon's 'crimes' were quaint in comparison.

R274 Some of your fear is not wrong. It's not just simple defensive gun ownership the deplorables are after. The ability to form militia to protect their white privilege is the underlying goal of the most radicalized deplorables. The media is very much complicit in covering up for these people. Just like Trump calls them "fine people", the media will show you the less radical faces of the Trump voters to make them seem sympathetic, when in reality, they are just one step from being hard-core racists, and the media will also turn a blind eye to the danger of having white supremacist militia operating and recruiting right in the open. Like the latest school shooting, the shooter was allegedly radicalized by such a group, but the media glossed over it without batting an eye.

I agree with you on most of what you're saying, R275, except I think they aren't "just one step away from being hard core racists." I think they are hard core racists. Depending on their personalities they show more or less of their racist. You have the kind of racists that carry tiki torches and drive on sidewalks to run people down, and you have the ones who are passive aggressive and claim they're not. And the full spectrum in between. But I say we go full bore and start passing and enforcing the kind of laws that removes automatic weapons from their hands, and tighten up and enforce better laws for gun safety. There are a lot of things we can do once we take control of the state legislatures and Congress again.

Interesting question. I have long thought that the Republican witch hunt into the Clintons starting in the 1990s and carrying on to today was revenge for the watergate prosecution. Nixon was disgraced for stepping just over the line for what was common practice in those days.
I saw a dramatization once where Nixon was asked if he wanted to contest the 1960 election results, given the cheating in Ohio. His response was, “No, Kennedy stole the election fair-and-square”.

His personal style camouflaged a litany of nasty policies sexism, homophobia, and racism, too. And look how he treated us. Shit. It took him how many years before he ever acknowledged AIDS existed, then came up with bullshit about how much Heckler was doing to support us at HHS. The Un Christian Right extremists were organizing at the local level as far back as 1991. I remember reading a really long feature article in the NYT magainze about how dedicated they were to "taking America back again" yes, in 1991.

It goes back further than that. It's revenge for Nixon and Bork, for driving the one out of office and for failing to confirm the other to the Supreme Court. Oh, and it's revenge for Newt Gingrich's hurt feelings because Bill Clinton "snubbed" him on Air Force One. Hell, Newtie even admitted that this was one of the reasons for the subsequent government shutdown. And it's revenge for daring to vote in a black man as President. And it's revenge for that same individual daring to publicly mock Donald Trump.

Yes, they will try for revenge. But, they are going to be operating from a position of great weakness if this all plays out as we hope and expect. They should lose their majority in the House, and likely will lose their majority in the Senate in the upcoming mid-term elections. But beyond that, they espouse unpopular policies and represent a shrinking slice of the American electorate. The only thing that has saved them thus far is the gerrymandering and the number of reliably Rethug Senate seats from mostly Southern and rural states. That and the vagaries of the Electoral College. At some point, however, even those impediments will be overcome and overwhelmed by demographics that they cannot control.

INTERESTing that someone upthread very recently tried to lump in Seth Abramson and a few other good, bona fide, Trump criticizers with a named group of very dishonest misinformation-pushers like Louise Mensch — this “mixing truth with lies” is a very common KBG propaganda technique that serves to invalidate accurate news via association with unreliable bedfellows.

I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt, r299. Seth Abramson was often mentioned alongside a group of unreliable Trump-Russia Twitter users in the early days of the administration but subsequently overcame those associations.
That said, Abramson deserves an award for his theory of the case. He gave us a window into the future. News - complete with leaks and sources - will break related to the Mueller probe, and I'll remember it covered in a weeks or months old thread from Abramson.

Mensch et al are at least entertaining reads (her blog, not her bloated Twitter feed). You can follow, but ingest with a large grain of salt.
Mensch in particular tweets like a speed addict, the amount of information she cranks out is nearly impossible to follow; her blog is more condensed and focused and has some interesting bits: she posted about the servers in Trump tower 'washing' data and sending it to servers linked to Prince/DeVos back in 2016. Not everything she posts is useless, but like anything it's reader beware.
I follow Eric Garland, not for hard news but for entertainment value and because I like the way he frames his anti-treason take. His longer threads are succinct and condense the main Resistance points that I feel need to be highlighted. He avoids the written diarrhea the others spew all day.
Claude Taylor has moved from stock anti-Trump/Resistance tweeting to putting together a PAC that's throwing up billboards in key spots. He landed a prime spot on the road to Mar-A-Lago and threw up an "Impeachment Now" board, so Trump couldn't avoid it when he came into town. Some of their other efforts are hilarious. Good tee shirts too.

Another plug for Seth Abramson. His Twitter page is invaluable for its intelligently presented information that concisely and precisely condenses numerous multi-sourced press reports into lengthy but coherent and often prescient threads. He has a real knack for weeding out and identifying the most salient actors and their parts in this sordid drama before the MSM bothers to investigate their significance, and putting it all into the greater context. He's a lawyer and academic, and has great insight into Mueller's options.
Seth loathes Louise Mensch, and her constant "patriot" crap is offputting (she hero-worships the intelligence community *and* George W. Bush... now there's a real CIA agent identity-revealing patriot for you) but from what I can decipher from her blog, Mensch has hit some bullseyes. I just don't trust Mensch. Before she scrubbed her Twitter it was a mess of anti-immigrant/anti-Muslim bullshit and Obama hate. She is hard right. Not slightly right- hard right. She is pretending to be more liberal and more tolerant than she is. She was tight with Milo and she worked for Murdoch. Any info she gets immediately has me asking why someone is feeding it to her.
She and her buddy that Chief guy also built a block list with over 700,000 Resistance accounts on it and encouraged all their followers to use it because they were "blocking Russian trolls." When you used the block list, it automatically blocked all those thousands of accounts and you'd never see their posts or know they existed. It was cutting off lots of people from being able to see and share info.
And this is how psychotic she was about who was added: I never responded to her. Not ever. I hit favorite once on someone's post when they quite politely questioned her on something she had gotten wrong. Louise obviously took the time to add anyone who favorited that tweet to their block list. It's the only way I could have even come to their attention because I rarely respond to anyone on Twitter and I certainly don't bitch and fight the way I do on DL. I got added to that list as a supposed Russian troll because I favorited a Tweet asking Louise to clarify something.

by Anonymous | reply 316 | March 31, 2018 1:16 PM |
Thanks R313 for correcting that. You know, as far as revenge and the GOP goes, I think it's just good to keep in mind that the Republicans regard the Dems as borderline "socialists" who are anti-capitalists. This has been true ever since so many of them insisted FDR would "ruin the country" because he was at heart a socialist. These people are corporatists who believed Big Business was the solution to every thing. The fact is, Capitalism had no better friend that FDR back in the 30's. After 20 years of Democratic Presidents the GOP needed a war hero like Eisenhower to clean off the stink of Herbert Hoover and revive the party.
Since this is my area of study, I've done research on it. The GOP was always the minority party. To get voters to buy in to their concept they were ranting and raving against "big government" and promoting the fact government was evil. They appropriated Patriotism and Morality and incited cultural wars to divide people and instill fear. This was back when "block voting" by various groups was more assured. Over the years they have devolved to the frenzied lunatics we see today. But they started down that road a long time ago. I think a major realignment of party affiliations occurred during the FDR era. Of course the GOP saw labor unions as evil and dangerous because they believed they were anti capitalist.
As for the Clintons, remember their background. Hillary worked with Marian Wright Adelman in a huge desegregation project, and Bill Clinton, the Fulbright Scholar, was in London demonstrating against the war in Vietnam. They worked for McGovern and then for Gary Hart for President. So early in their political careers they came out as activists too far to the Left to suit the comfort level of anyone aspiring to identify with the GOP. In truth, Bill & Hill looked and acted like hippies back then. Of course feminist Hillary, as staff to the Watergate investigation was not going to endear her to anyone in the GOP. So in fact, based on their experiences and their politics the Clintons were always labeled as dangerous by the GOP.
But then, after Reagan got elected & Dems kept losing, Bill Clinton and a few other governors formed the Democratic Leadership Council. The theory being that the Democratic Party had tacked too far to the left and if they wanted to win elections they were going to have to find "a third way" neither conservative nor liberal, but a hybrid, taking good ideas from both sides. (Bill fell out with the Adelmans when he adopted "welfare reform." ) People overlook the fact that Bill Clinton was an extremely successful POTUS who used the military tactic of "triangulation" to outsmart the opposition. He left us in great shape with a budget surplus but the GOP would like to remiind you about Monica and Paula Jones. I know. This is a digression, but I wanted to give historical background on this whole animosity thing about the Clintons. They are hated by the GOP/Conservatives, because they were successful and effective.
As the GOP is robbed of a lot of their talking points they go further Right becoming more extreme, when tacking to the Middle, going more to the Left would really be the smarter thing to do. Militias and the NRA kooks got more open while Clinton was POTUS. The entire goal of the powers behind the GOP is to dismantle government and privatize everything. They are using the extreme racists anti immigration crowd to keep us distracted along with what Ana Marie Cox rightly calls "dumpster fires" at the WH. Trump is a traitor. But if his presence in the WH allows the big boys to realize their goals of total deregulation, pure profit for the few, then they will support him. And their solution to the masses of people who oppose them is to initiate laws and rules closer to a corporate police state then a democracy. We have to stop them.

We're talking about people with criminal records of their own, were talking about drunken parties and bullshit. In the White House. So the obvious question IMO, is Where the Fuck is John Kelly and what has he been doing as chief of staff. Of course maybe these newest reports are a prelude to firing him. People can always say he allowed the mess. But the thing is, some of this stuff is not within Trump's immediate sphere, it falls to an administrator, and so blaming Kelly is justified.

It is truly odd, the comparisons that can be made between Trump and Hitler, but here’s another one.
Hitler’s underlings hated each other. He would often give the same assignment to multiple people, which made matters worse. IIRC, the head of the Navy so despised the head of the Army, that they refused to speak with each other, never mind coordinate plans.
Trump also gives the same job to multiple people. Also, Hitler’s supporters also complained that Hitler was innocent of many of the actions undertaken in his name. When Ernst Rohm was executed, he complained “if only the Hitler knew, he wouldn’t permit this”, when in fact, Hitler ordered it.
So, one might blame Kelly for not doing a better job, but the buck stops with Trump. Trump tries to mask his incompetence with a claim of liking disruption and unpredictability. It’s a very childish attempt to look like he knows what he’s doing and excuse the chaos, when he clearly does not. So, there’s plenty of blame to go around. Kelly, Trump, they all share a piece of it.

I’m not wild about Seth Abramson’s initial BernieBro-ness (I personally saw through Bernie even before his NYDN Interview), which still can manifest itself in a form of “but her emails” from time to time, but Seth has put in the academic grunt work researching Trump-Russia since then.

As I follow White House news I keep hearing phrases like "the administration" this or that, "people in the White House," "White House Aides say" etc. etc., I wonder, who in hell are these people? It feels like a lot of unknown shadowy people are acting behind the scenes in this corrupt circus of a dysfunctional government. Kellyanne Conway, Steven Miller, Jared Kushner, and who else? I have no idea. This is all just so wrong.

I googled and found some answers. From WH.Gov. I still wonder who all the advisers are. Need to look some more.
Executive Office of the President Every day, the President of the United States is faced with scores of decisions, each with important consequences for America’s future. To provide the President with the support that he or she needs to govern effectively, the Executive Office of the President (EOP) was created in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The EOP has responsibility for tasks ranging from communicating the President’s message to the American people to promoting our trade interests abroad.
The EOP, overseen by the White House Chief of Staff, has traditionally been home to many of the President’s closest advisers. While Senate confirmation is required for some advisers, such as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, most are appointed with full Presidential discretion. The individual offices that these advisors oversee have grown in size and number since the EOP was created. Some were formed by Congress, others as the President has needed them — they are constantly shifting as each President identifies his needs and priorities, with the current EOP employing over 1,800 people.
Perhaps the most visible parts of the EOP are the White House Communications Office and Press Secretary’s Office. The Press Secretary provides daily briefings for the media on the President’s activities and agenda. Less visible to most Americans is the National Security Council, which advises the President on foreign policy, intelligence, and national security.
There are also a number of offices responsible for the practicalities of maintaining the White House and providing logistical support for the President. These include the White House Military Office, which is responsible for services ranging from Air Force One to the dining facilities, and the Office of Presidential Advance, which prepares sites remote from the White House for the President’s arrival.
Many senior advisors in the EOP work near the President in the West Wing of the White House. However, the majority of the staff is housed in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, just a few steps away and part of the White House compound.

I can’t wait to read the books. It might take 20 years or more before we find out what is really going on. Trump is batshit crazy, stupid, and ignorant. We’ll only know the true extent of it in many years to come.
I wonder every time the news reports that Trump talks with his “friends” about policy issues. It’s usually reported derogatorily, as if he is asking unqualified friends for advice, but my question is, who in the hell would want to be Donald's friend? I can’t believe he has any truly social friends. Sycophants, I can believe, but not friends.

Lindsey Graham's "arms without patriotism" mantra is a problem. He did not use those exact words, but pushing increasing military build-up, adventurism, and expenditures, without forcefully condemning Putty Poop's behavior and trying to impede an investigation into such to take heat off DJT, are contradictory objectives.

Gowdy, and others, know what's up and how the GOP will be going down for their CA involvement. Is his retirement an admission of guilt (that's how I see it) and does this help avoid prosecution if found to be knowledgeable about foreign involvement in their campaigns?

by Anonymous | reply 347 | April 1, 2018 12:10 AM |
The Midterms are a worry. Because as we get closer to November, Trump is going to have to do something Or Mueller is going to have to do something. If the Dems win big and take the House and the Senate, Trump will fire Mueller. BOOM like that. And then the Dems will re hire him and begin the Impeachment. But if Trump fires him now it will help the Dems win. OTOH, if he leaves Mueller alone and keeps distracting us with Korea and his big meeting and faking it about Russia, as long as the economy doesn't tank, we'll risk only gaining in the House and not doing anything with the Senate, maybe even losing a seat or two.
by Anonymous | reply 348 | April 1, 2018 1:07 AM |
r348, I don't think we stand a great chance of taking back the Senate anyway. All of the polls seem to suggest this is the case.
by Anonymous | reply 349 | April 1, 2018 1:09 AM |
The Senate is pretty much split anyway......If Trump gets impeached by Congress, there is a HIGH probabilty he will be removed from office.....remember, we are not talking about a blowjob here....The Senate is the stop gap.....they would not remove Clinton for such a blatant partisan attack.....with Trump, there will be plenty of criminal charges.
by Anonymous | reply 350 | April 1, 2018 1:13 AM |
Keep in mind that if the Democrats do get a majority in the Senate, they're not going to get enough seats to convict Trump in a Senate trial without Republican help. Any case Mueller brings is going to have to involve conduct so undeniably criminal and prove Trump's own guilt so conclusively that they will have absolutely no choice but to vote with the Democrats.

So like you remember that scene in Game of Thrones when Lord Commander Mormont and his Nights Watch were quartered at Craster's Keep when they went out ranging, and then Jon Snow followed old man Craster that one night, and he saw him? He SAW him take the new baby boy out into the woods and lay the baby boy in the snow by a tree. And then he left...or Jon Snow thought he left, and the White Walker came and took the baby, and Jon Snow SAW him. He saw the White Walker take the baby!!! And then he got hit in the head and knocked unconscious.
Now, Jon Snow was the Lord Commander's steward and trusted aide. So you'd think the Lord Commander would be all, like upset, right? But no. The Lord Commander asks Jon what he was doing out there in the middle of the night, and when Jon tells him, the Lord Commander already knew!!!!! He KNEW. But he rationalized it by telling Jon that Craster had been the difference between life and death for many rangers out here and there was nothing he could do about it. So he decided to ignore it so he could stay at Craster's and make sure his men could shelter there. OK?
Bad decision. Because all along Craster was helping the enemies of humans. He was appeasing the White Walkers who were probably going to end up killing him anyway. Well, that's how our foreign policy is operating. Sometimes it's unavoidable, but with Trump, he has no idea how to act or how everything is connected. So he plays footsie with the Russians, and he is allowing Russian influence to expand and we are going to have HUGE problems with Turkey and everywhere else. Trump is Craster.

That said, it's pretty clear that none of them have really gone after the issue, funding the research and the development teams, employing the number of people necessary to put a dent in this. Mueller Investigating Whether Roger Stone Had Dinner With Assange
The Wall Street Journal reports that, according to a person “familiar with the matter,” Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether Trump campaign adviser Roger Stone dined with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in 2016, ahead of Assange’s release of hacked emails damaging to Hillary Clinton.
In an email to former protégé, now enemy Sam Nunberg on August 4, 2016, which the Journal obtained, Stone put things pretty plainly, writing: “I dined with Julian Assange last night.” The very next day, Stone tweeted, “Hillary lies about Russian Involvement in DNC hack – Julian Assange is a hero.” (His Twitter account has since been suspended.)

This has been the slowest and most, shall we say, nebulous Mueller thread in a long time. Do we think the lull from the Mueller investigation is going to last a while or is something big about to explode? I hope we aren't sitting here waiting for something to happen until November. I would assume at least one or two big things are going to happen before then. Maybe a Kushner or Stone indictment? People are starting to lose interest. I know that's not the aim of the investigation but we need to keep the momentum going. I understand it's a slow process but at the rate everything moves nowadays, this glacial investigation needs to ramp it up a bit or throw some meat to the masses.

I just hope the distraction of the Stormy Daniels mess will bear fruit and get Michael Cohen charged and convicted of something illegal. He's a rotten son of a bitch and he needs to go to prison so some real violent offenders can kick his ass ad have him singing soprano. There have been things happening related to the investigation, directly or indirectl, but the media wasted too much time on Stormy.
I'm still sitting here pissed off at Papadopoulis. If that little fucker jeopardizes this case in the slightest way I will slap him viciously across his face, ....and more than once. While this matter is pending he shouldn't be hanging around public places, especially bars discussing it with strangers. And of course the media knee jerk reaction is to hype ever non story, every detail as if it is brand new when maybe it isn't.
It's not just the fake news we have to worry about. I find that easier to deal with that the garbage news that attempts to make significant, the insignificant. The fact is, the media just can't deal with a slow news day, so they fall into the trap of hyping bullshit. Not saying getting drunk and talking about the case is insignificant, but in this instance I don't think he divulged anything about Sessions that has not been reported. He is skirting the edges of what he can and cannot talk about, so he better be careful.
What's at issue isn't that he spilled new information on Sessions, it's about whether he should have been there doing that in the first place, and hopefully he learned a lesson when his new friend ran to the media to report it after he cooperated by taking a picture with him. What an asshole.

Thank you R446 for showing us how it affects people personally when he goes on these attacks. It seems to me it is not legal to use public office in this way. It certainly would be bad if a member of Congress did it, so it ought to also be illegal for a POTUS> I personally think a class action lawsuit ought to be filed. Bezos could fight back, and he should but it would be even better if employees adversely affected also fought back. Trump is not invulnerable. If you could prove malicious and arbitrary intent MAYBE r446 and r447. But fundamentally it's not illegal for a president to call for higher taxes or tougher regs on a company. It's mostly being reported that van der Slaat DIDN'T flip like Gates and instead gave in to sentencing. But it was such a light sentence that it must have been part of a negotiation. Trump not a "criminal target" of Russia Investigation
Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III informed President Trump’s attorneys last month that he is continuing to investigate the president but does not consider him a criminal target at this point, according to three people familiar with the discussions.
In private negotiations in early March about a possible presidential interview, Mueller described Trump as a subject of his investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. Prosecutors view someone as a subject when that person has engaged in conduct that is under investigation but there is not sufficient evidence to bring charges.
The special counsel also told Trump’s lawyers that he is preparing a report about the president’s actions while in office and potential obstruction of justice, according to two people with knowledge of the conversations.

Yup, he's off the hook, r515! Well not quite yet, but we shouldn't think the investigation will automatically remove Trump from office. Trump views things as PR issues, and he's right. His legal exposure is likely limited. If he can convince congressional leadership that they won't lose support by backing the administration, I don't see the Republicans suddenly growing a conscious.
Trump's best bet is to get some of Mueller's findings about himself into the public where the shock value will soon wear off and the investigation into the campaign and the president himself will become just another of the cast of stories the press keeps on about. You'll hear that the White House has "addressed it extensively" from the briefing room. If he can survive the first direct blow, he can possibly survive them all.

'Not sufficient evidence' and 'at this point' are qualifiers which imply impetus in the direction of finding sufficient evidence.
The 'conduct' investigated so far is unlikely to have a neat limit, so a shift from 'subject' to 'target' - the distinction and direction put out there for all to consider - surely remains in play.
'Helping police with their inquiries' can be a useful euphemism.

Reportedly Mueller told Trump's lawyers that he is not under criminal investigation
I'm crying as I type
by Anonymous | reply 524 | April 4, 2018 12:22 PM |
The special counsel has also told the president’s lawyers that Trump is not a criminal target AT THIS POINT.
He's also keeping track of everything Trump has done in office.
by Anonymous | reply 525 | April 4, 2018 1:03 PM |
All this latest development means is that Mueller doesn't feel like the evidence meets the test to consider Trump the target YET. YET. He wants a stronger case. This is a POTUS. He wants it airtight, not speculative. He is still investigating and Trump can turn from a subject which he currently is, to a target, in the blink of an eye. Anyone in the Trump circle who feels "relieved" and thinks this is confirmation of innocence (haha) is a fool. Mueller is giving Trump's people a heads up. He is still pursuing a meeting to determine "state of mind" on the Obstruction stuff, even though he already has enough. My only problem with the Obstruction charges is that the process as outlined, lays it all in the lap of the House of Representatives. That pisses me off. But again this is also speculation. It's all up to Rosenstein. He will get Mueller's report. They will meet to talk about it. Then Rosenstein has to decide whether to make the report public and whether to file charges based on the report, or to hand the report over to the House for review and action. I think Rosenstein can also make a recommendation to the House. I sincerely hope the rats at the CIA have some really bad evidence of dirt on Paul Ryan and he either resigns or decides to move forward with impeachment. Because that's the way it needs to happen. Trouble is the timing. We are in the midst of an election. If Rosenstein delivers his report and it's ignored, what happens to the report? If the House changes hands do the Dems get a chance to re open the issue?

Muller's making a list, and he's checking it twice
He's gonna find out if Donny's been naughty or nice.
by Anonymous | reply 527 | April 4, 2018 1:07 PM |
I think for this phase of the investigation I'm going with Jeffrey Toobin, Lawrence O Donnell, and Rachel Maddow. Maybe Ari Melber who keeps batting his eyes at me, but I think Toobin over Melber on this one. Melber is smart, but he doesn't have the seasoning for this. (I think of all the legal consultants they use, my favorites are Barbara McQuaid and Ackerman.)

R527, I know the answer to that one.

Good question. To my understanding, if Paul Ryan ignores whatever comes up, and the House changes hands, I can think of no legal reason to prevent Pelosi from proceeding with impeachment. Actually, if the Republicans attempted to impeach Trump, but were unable to do so, I think Pelosi could still repeat the process after the election. They could do nothing but repeatedly take the matter up. The only thing to block them from doing so, is whether or not the public supported the effort.

Stop crying because you've read that completely wrong. Trump is not a target of the criminal investigation. He is a subject of the investigation at this point. He can very easily move from subject to target.
So, snap out of it.

by Anonymous | reply 535 | April 4, 2018 2:22 PM |
As I think about it, process wise, I think if Rosenstein really wants to do the right thing, he will make Mueller's report public. He has the discretion to do that. Because if he keeps the report under seal, and delivers it to Ryan, then we have to depend on Ryan.
And I can almost write the script for Speaker Ryan: "We have reviewed the report and while there are some things in it that are "troubling" and we all know how the President can sometimes say things (wink, wink) there's nothing in this report that rises to the level of an impeachable offense. We take impeachment very seriously, and this report is thorough and FINAL. And Impeachment is off the table!!!!"
But if Rosenstein makes the report public, the outrage and the drumbeat for impeachment will be loud and strong and it will definitely affect the outcome of the election if Ryan refuses to act.. So we all need to hope Rosenstein makes the report public. I think he will. We know the Dems want it to be public. And Rosenstein is not stupid. He will not want the tidal wave of Democratic Congressmen in the House, the same House that approves his budget, to walk in the door January 3,2019 and be angry at him...assuming he is still around. His new Deputy worked in the Trump transition. Yes. He needs to recuse himself.

Funny thing from the history books: The Starr/Lewinsky investigators refrained from admitting to President Bill Clinton’s lawyers he was a target before his grand jury interview, even though it was clear he was. Didn’t want that bombshell politicized.

I think even if we have criticism or problems with Amazon from time to time, we need to show our support and poke our fingers in Trump's eyes. We need to do one or both: Contact Amazon customer service and tell them we support them; and buy something on Amazon. Last night I rented a movie. It was crap but I watched it. But I hope we can see a discernible increase in sales for them as a repudiation of Trump. He's pissed at Bezos for owning the Washington Post and he's pissed because online shopping is killing his retail leases. Good. I want his entire fucking family to go bankrupt. I want to see him battle lawsuits and have legal problems until they bury his ass six feet under the ground.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | April 4, 2018 3:45 PM |
Good point, R537. Important point.
R538 if the report goes to Congress, yes, it will leak, in part. But if it stays within the FBI it will not. But the FBI will be bombarded with FOIA requests by the media, to release it. Put yourself in Rosenstein's shoes. Ask yourself, what would be in his/FBI's best interests? I say releasing it would be. It has received too much attention too many people have been following its progress and a lot of time and money and resources have been spent and Mueller himself is legend, so you really cannot justify burying the report.
by Anonymous | reply 546 | April 4, 2018 3:50 PM |
R545 good post. I hadn’t thought of that angle with the retail leases. Question for the board—other Than laundering money, does Trump’s business really get involved with brick and mortar real estate anymore? My understanding was that he really only licenses his name. And with his name and brand being in the toilet, that doesn’t bode well for his business.
by Anonymous | reply 547 | April 4, 2018 4:00 PM |
Mueller very much wants to interview Trump and by saying he's a subject but not a target of the investigation, he's probably trying to make Trump feel comfortable enough to be interviewed.

Roger Stone appeared on the InfoWars radio show the same day he sent an email claiming he dined with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange -- and he predicted "devastating" upcoming disclosures about the Clinton Foundation.
Stone's comments in his August 4, 2016, appearance are the earliest known time he claimed to know of forthcoming WikiLeaks documents. A CNN KFile timeline shows that on August 10, 2016, Stone claimed to have "actually communicated with Julian Assange."
The comments also raise more questions about what Stone knew about WikiLeaks and about the veracity of his claims to have been in contact with Assange, which he now denies

[quote]He's pissed at Bezos for owning the Washington Post
Just watched again 'All The President's Men', with (pre-Trump) extras - underlining Woodstein's tenacity, Deep Throat's heroism, Bradlee's courage. And the scandal got the film it richly deserved: it's a great work.
Then recently saw 'The Post' - which ended with the presses streaming about the Pentagon Papers (K Graham's courage), and a VO of Nixon saying that all access to the WaPo was to be shut down.
So Trump's hatred of Bezos has to be based substantially on fear as well as envy, and the historical portents can be seen as promising. Plus ca change, we devoutly hope.
