I think her performance really lent gravitas to HG, which could have been a dumb Twilight-ish movie. I thought she was terribly miscast in Silver Linings Playbook, which IMO was beyond her life experience and imagination—but she got an Oscar for that one, inexplicably to me. (I tend to dislike David Russell movies overall though...)

For me, Lawrence is similar to Gwyneth Paltrow. I think both are excellent actors in many movies, but their real-life personalities are turnoffs to the point that people don’t want to see them onscreen. Paltrow was brilliant in the Talented Mr. Ripley, Emma, Proof, Shakespeare in Love, etc. She would have been a great actress of Hollywood lore had she not turned herself into GOOP and revealed that she’s a pretentious asshole.

LuAnn's arrest drama is obviously real but c'mon-the Tom shit was the fakest storyline ever. Everyone knew they wouldn't last and shouldn't get married. For some of you to pretend that it was real is laughable.

I love that the vibe on all of these RH shows is that these women are basically co-workers, which they are. They are not friends. Maybe pairs of them actually hang out with each other in real life. But for the most part these are women who work together on a show and who would never in a million years, travel 10 miles, let alone halfway around the world with these particular women unless they were getting paid for it. The true drama of the RH is watching each woman fighting for a role and relevance on the show while still maintaining their Q rating. How nasty or bitchy, or real can I be but still keep my job? What's the biggest lie I can tell over cancer, or disease or love or marriage without turning people off completely?

Anyway, I work in a store and Dorinda Medley stopped in yesterday. Check out her Insta boomerang. I must say she is completely delightful and as real as the person she comes across as on television. I never make it habit of commenting to celebrities or giving off that I know them. But I asked her quietly if the girls were coming back soon. And she lit up. She actually pulled out her phone and we watched the above trailer together. It was surreal as she commented on various scenes. It's a bumpy season she said, but that's what they want. I said I know, that's what we all want. I've met a handful of the housewives from Bev Hills, Atlanta and NY and they are pretty much the people you see on TV. Although Camille Grammar was exceptionally sweet and humble considering how rich she is. A lot of thank yous, and genuine smiles. Kenya is Kenya with beautiful almost predator, wolf-like eyes that you feel don't miss a beat. You immediately feel the need not to fuck up because it looks like she suffers no fools. Erika Girardi is reserved, cool, self-depricating and funny. Dorit was lovely but definitely enjoyed the attention of the room. She has the best style, hands down, in my opinion of all wives. Luanne I've seen out and she looks like a blast, real but just wants to have a good time. Kyle was in the day her sister was arrested so she was a bit distracted, but I see her nieces a lot and Paris and Kyle do have a striking resemblance to each other. Lisa Vanderpump is exactly as you would think. She is a beautiful woman, pretty, big hair, moves like she's floating. Another one who looks like she doesn't suffer any fools. But she is really an attractive woman, and I don't want to say "older" woman. She's is just beautiful, period and surprisingly curvy. Although I fanned out more from seeing Jiggy being toted about by Ken. Jill Zarin is surprisingly attractive as well. I know that's terrible to say because you assume someone looks their best on TV with all of that help. But this woman came in one day and I said she looks like a younger prettier Jill Zarin. I just assumed it couldn't be her. Turns out it was. In the whole lot of Housewives I've met, no one was a diva, no one played the "do you know who I am" card. You really do feel like you know these people after having watched them for so many years. So it's just an interesting juxtaposition to see them in person, lovely, nice and in the back of your head picturing all the nasty fights these grown women have gotten into. And as far as scripted, the situations are setups, maybe even some of the lines, but the hate seems to be very real.

r116 i kinda see the shows as students having to be in school together. filming is like the school year and when it ends its like summer break. did i ever want to hang out with half the classmates i had as school friends outside of our monday through friday? no. but i think NY is the most comforting to watch because the proximity of manhattan and their careers brings them together, with or without the show. so these relationships are definitely real.

r119 the difference with OC, for example, is that the ladies live SO FAR APART. so them filming a 30 minute interaction at a cafe is like a half day activity. the ladies of the UES can just jump into an SUV and meet each other for a 3 hour dinner within 30 minutes.

essentially, the NY women have more fleshed out opportunities to build/break their relationships. it makes for WAY more organic television

The difference between the other cities and this one is (aside from Tinsley who is going into her second year but has already developed friendships with Carole, Ramona, Sonja, Luann & Dorinda) the ladies have genuine and real connection to one another. Ramona, LuAnn & Bethenny have ten years of history together the show can mine from. Sonja has history with pretty much the entire cast, especially Luann & Ramona. Dorinda was a genuine and real addition to the show based on her long standing friendship with Ramona, LuAnn & Sonja, outside the show. Carole is a dull cunt, however.

Alex and Simon were so pretentious and delusional shopping in St. Barts for all of her gowns, meanwhile they live in a broke-down townhouse in Cobble Hill. Loved it when Zarin said, nobody goes to St. Barts in August.

Alex and Simon was one of my favorite parts of the show when they were cast members. I always wondered where their money came from. I think Simon managed a hotel or something and was paid really well. I'd love to see Alex guest on the show. But I don't think she cares anymore. Plus she now lives in Australia. So she really dosent care. I liked seeing her on WWHL last year.

NYC is the best of the franchises. After 10 years it is still genuinely entertaining. Watching the transformations and non transformations of Bethenny, ramona, Luann and Sonja has been a very interesting ride. Dorinda was the best addition as well. I've pretty much given up on OC, Beverly Hills and Atlanta because it's gotten too stale. New Jersey is depressing and stale. I miss miami though. Season. 2 of miami was in my opinion the greatest housewives season of all time. I wish it was given more of a chance.

I think the reason Dorinda was the best addition is because she is stereotypically NYC. I suppose Aviva was as well, but she was too weird to relate to. Dorinda seems like she could be your funny neighbor down the hall. The other additions seem like suburban women who just happened to move to nyc.

Miami was entertaining, but I think the problem is that the city doesn’t have as much going on as other big cities, so the women came across more as soap opera/telenovela characters than real women.

Another thing about NY is that they are probably the only franchise that never seems to have "friends of" or a lot of "testing" of new wives during a season which lends itself to NY feeling less "produced"

But Atlanta remains the highest rated of the entire franchise. I know there was a ratings decline for season ten. But I think that had more to do with the bad producing by Michael Beck. And Kim Zolciak and her toxicity was truly a turn off for a lot of loyal viewers. Including myself. But I'm looking forward to NYC returning too. It's a fun show.

I don't want to judge B's relationship and estrangement from her mother but I thought what little she did share about their mother-daughter relationship was very telling. She spoke of an incident where her stepfather attacked her mother. She said she remembered her mother reaching for the phone as her stepfather was yelling at her and it ended with him slamming the receiver of the (landline) phone on her head and her crying, trying to get away from him.

B explained that although it was the first time she saw him physically abuse her mother, she was five and too young to be forced to witness this physical abuse, which is true. But I couldn't help wonder if maybe her mother was an abused victim of domestic violence, and of course horrified, especially that her little daughter was subjected to this violence. And maybe her mother didn't expect him to start hitting her on the head with the phone in front of her daughter as she attempted to call the police.

If this is so, what did she want her terrified and abused mother to do? Ask her abuser to wait and secretly abuse her behind closed doors? Or ask him to take her into the next room? If this is so, why didn't B side with her mother against him, instead of estranging from both of them?

I don't want to judge what I don't know. Maybe her mother was toxic and wasn't a good mother to her and estranging was necessary and justified, her only option. I don't know, I have no idea. But from what little she shared that's not at all what it sounded like to me. Sometimes, in some cases, it doesn't take two to tango, particularly when there's a bully/abuser and a victim. If B couldn't put herself in her mother's place and side with her and support her, that's a really, really bad sign, one of a disorder.

Nobody wants to be estranged from their own parent. No one. Cutting off contact comes only after years and years of trying to establish a reasonable relationship and finally realizing that no solution is possible. And the lingering guilt and “what if’s” are awful and never go away.
