I bet Timmy's parents are thrilled that he's so close to the Hammers. Considering some of the other celebrity types he could be paling around with, the Hammers seem relatively grounded and probably don't get much wilder than a Big Mac, a spiked cupcake, and some pot. They both seem to care about Timmy a lot and have adopted them into their small friend circle. Both Armie and Timmy lucked out with each other and Luca's instincts were obviously correct pairing them together. I hope they continue their friendship indefinitely whether we get to witness it on social media or not.

R81 I loved Armie in CMBYN, but I’m iffy as to whether or not he deserved to be nominated (the Oscars are a piece of shit anyway). His acting was uneven.

In some scenes, his acting was incredibly moving, as in the morning after he and Elio had sex for the first time, Armie telegraphed Oliver’s hurt and confusion so well.

Other times, Armie’s acting was wooden and self conscious, like when Elio was showing off to him when playing the piano.

His chemistry with Timmy was always apparent and special , and I cannot imagine another actor playing Oliver. But that does not blind me to the unevenness of his performance.

R84 I understand what you mean but that wooden acting whether it was intentional or a limitation in that case it worked for me and represented how I imagined the Oliver character at that point in the story.

When I saw the first trailer with the shoulder massage scene, Oliver gave me a sense of cockyness and that all american attitude I despise also in real life, but the transformation from that to a softer and vulnerable person worked really well.

R85 yes, Armie did transform his portrayal of Oliver as the movie went on. He became stiller, less frantic and more relaxed. His hair was more natural, less shellacked.

I could believe that this was all intentional....until the scene which Oliver is dancing with the New Wave girl under the church. Armie’s acting returned to wooden. It was distracting and disappointing.

It’s that scene, in my opinion, that torpedoed his chance of a nomination.

I agree that he was uneven. He confused me in terms of the character’s motivation at different points. You shouldn’t have to see a movie twice.

He's always admitted to drinking a lot of alcohol and why is he gaining weight? He may be having a rough time unrelated to the non-nomination, or perhaps it's just exhaustion over time, but the Oscar upset on top of everything else must have affected him too. We know he's fragile and has self-esteem issues, he needs to rest, work out and ditch alcohol, which really does nothing to improve your mood. New work projects to focus on would help, too.

The French interviewer asked Timothee about his nomination and asked Armie if he was disappointed he didn't get one. I'm sure he is disappointed but not devastated. Even Timothee said of his Golden Globes loss a part of him was disappointed when Gary Oldman's name was called. You try to not get your hopes up too high but it's human to want to win.

We also have to remember that Armie is just 31. That may seem old enough for some people, but a lot of people in their late 20s and early 30s have a childlike entitlement to them and act out in ways that someone in their late 30s and 40s would never do.

I didn't see Elizabeth but she must have been there because she posted a photo from the audience, I was near the front. I don't think anyone was with Timmy.

Other than the tracksuit which I was half expecting after seeing the photos of him this morning, Armie seemed normal. He answered the questions thoughtfully and was joking around with Luca and Timmy. Was kind of relieved after he seemed distant in some of the other recent press.

Timmy was great. I said it in his thread but he really looked incredible and overshadowed Armie in that regard. He was very attentive and engaged with the audience a lot.

No, no one mentioned the sequel. They talked about the use of music, the phone call scene (Armie was upstairs on the phone to Timmy), the waterfall scene where Luca hit Armie that they've spoken about before, the usual building chemistry question, a few other things but nothing really new.

Maybe Amrie's distance in recent pressers was do to language barrier? How full was the audience. Did stick around after Q & A and take pics.

What did him in was the film's momentum peaking too soon to carry him past his competition, plus the split between his and Michael Stuhlbarg's performance. Stuhlbarg's speech reminded me of a Shakespearean monologue, almost a modern-day version of Polonius telling Laertes "to thine ownself be true," without the preachiness. And yeah, it's more the speech than the acting that deserves the accolades.

I was at the Curzon London for the CMBYN q&a yesterday. It has been on at the Curzon for months to big houses. There has been a lot of boundary blurring with those involved with the film. Also Timmy didn't appear in any of Elizabeth's photos until after she had returned so it's not hard to believe that Armie and Timmy bonded over those three weeks. It was probably a good job she left or else that might not have happened to the same extent.

It is true that they are 2 of only 3 Americans on set, one of whom is decades older than both of them. It is true that they bonded and formed a genuine friendship that is still going 18 months later, to the point where they choose to spend time together outside of any work or promotional obligations. The news that Elizabeth was in Crema during the recording did not surprise me. I do not believe this belief that Armie ate Timmy. I think they fell in love, and have a platonic love to this day. No kiss, no sex. Armie seems to want to eat Timmy with his eyes. The future will show us.

This is not news. They publicly documented that Elizabeth was there for all but 3 weeks. A few weeks ago, Elizabeth was asked on the red carpet about Timmy and spoke about their bond 'not only in Italy but now'.

I think it's clear they do not kiss and do not have sex. There is a minimum distance yet. But I imagine if Armie devours him with his eyes in front of cameras, how does he act without cameras? I am curious.
