I'm old enough to remember the L&L story line, back in the days when Laura was married to Scotty Baldwin and skeevy Luke was lusting after her in Port Charles' only disco, where he had his way with her (the, "was it rape? not rape? kind of sort of rape which Laura secretly enjoyed broohaha), which launched the two characters into insane story lines and ratings heaven for ABC.

Tel me this, why is Laura's last name Collins and are all of her children still living in that hell hole of Port Charles which is run by the mob? What is Laura's role within the lives of that sad city's denizens?

I heard that Laura was in the bar at The Floating Rib, sobbing into her Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet. Rick and Leslie rushed over in their white coats to comfort her. Meantime, in a dark corner, Monica and Alan Quartermain whispered, “Mission Accomplished.”

They bumped Lezlie Charleson to recurring years ago, and she still averages about 6-7 episodes per month. Same with Jackie Zeman.

R2 The only watching I've done in many years (the late 90s is when I last watched regularly) are the times when I'm flipping the channels and a character I like happens to be in a scene. Even then, it's often a struggle to watch.

Maybe if Genie restyled her hair with bangs, she wouldn't have been fired.

I watched GH for the first time in years this past week on a snow day home from work. Awful. It was all about some ugly woman named Ava with weird lips and a scarred face. I think she was delusional. Anyway, it was awful. And the make up. Yikes. Everyone looked orange and had inches of make up caked on their faces. It was distracting.

Genie Francis is a beautiful legend and has it all over the scar-face woman. They should fire her.

The last I remember of the Luke and Laura saga was that Laura went entirely mad and became catatonic. She came out of it briefly but then slipped back into her imaginary world and was again confined to an asylum or hospital. I vaguely recall that Luke spirited her away from her confinement, and that's the last I heard of that. I assume now Laura has come out of her catatonic state and continued to get involved in all the kinds of crazy shit that goes on in soap opera land.

Yes, in the deserted disco, to the tune of "Rise" by Herb Alpert, Luke drags Laura to the floor as she cries "No Luke, no!" After he has his way with her, she runs out and is found and taken to a hospital, where she's treated as a rape victim. Later, Scotty finds a note she's written to Luke where she refers to him having raped her. Many years later Luke tells one of their children how he raped his mother. Yes, one of the greatest love stories in soap history, one of the "super couples" of soap, originated with the heroine being raped by the guy who would eventually become her true love. I know soaps are fantasy, mindless entertainment, but that really takes the cake.

That's why my mother wouldn't let us watch GH.

I liked her as Ceara on AMC. I remember reading somewhere that she liked being on AMC more than GH, but ABC pretty much forced her to go back to playing Laura (after briefly taking Ceara to Loving).

AMC seemed to have less backstage drama and more cast friendships than other soaps, at least the ABC ones.

R46 I also recall people trying to make a big deal of Susan Lucci being threatened by another Soap Diva joining the show and there was all sorts of drama. Turned out that Lucci became fond of Francis and they got along extremely well while she was on the show.

AMC was evidently the place to work in the 80s and 90s. Yes, Genie loved working there and wanted to stay, but AMC made her return to GH. Jane Elliot said in an interview that it was absolutely her best work experience in terms of close collaboration with other actors and the general family atmosphere among the cast. Supposedly Bob Woods advised some extra who was having trouble dealing with some egos on the set that he should get a job on AMC because it's a much friendlier set. I used to date an extra who was used in background scenes on AMC, OLTL, Loving, and RH, and he said that AMC was the friendliest cast.

Lucci was a straight up cunt to Finola Hughes. Finola has danced around it in interviews, but everyone knows who she's talking about. Susan Lucci was the star of AMC, there was no need for the way she treated FH. She'll pay for that one.

Poor Finola - I remember there was a lot of fan hostility on the boards when she joined AMC. There were rumors that they got rid of Michael Nader to meet her (this was prior to when he was fired for the drug offense), so Dimitri fans were not happy, they made it clear she was for Edmund (who she did not click with) so Edmund and Brooke fans were not happy, and Brooke and Erica were kind of on back-burner at the time they brought her in, so Erica and Brooke fans were not happy, because they felt she was getting their air time.

It did not help that she was not given a great story line, they they added the convoluted is she Anna or is she Alex. She finally started to click when she was simply playing Anna, they made her police commissioner, and she worked well with David, and then she was let go.

I had heard Genie did like AMC, and while I did not dislike Ceara, she had kind of become a boring character. She had more of an edge when she was first on, and then they did one of the ridding of her demons by confronting a past molestation story lines. The show already had Brooke and reformed Natalie, they did not need another reformed heroine.

Was Ceara always meant for Jeremy? When she came on, they heavily chem tested her with Michael E. Knight, Richard Shoberg, and especially Walt Willey. She and Jean LeClerc really clicked, I thought. For a gay man, he certainly had chemistry with all the women they paired him with.

I am not sure, but I kind wonder if she was originally meant for Jack and be a romantic and business rival for Erica. It seemed like she was going to fill the trouble-maker, sparring partner for Erica void left by the reformation of Natalie. Then they moved Jack to Brooke, and Ceara and Erica actually became friends and on good terms.

For as long as Walt Wiley was on the show, he did not have a lot of romantic pairings and really only seemed to have chemistry with Erica and Barbara.

Her husband is still screwing things up for her.

I'm probably one of the few people who liked him with Felicity LaFortune's Laurel. I thought they had an easygoing chemistry, but they moved her over to Trevor when Melody Anderson clearly wasn't working out as nuNatalie. He was awful with Season Hubley, and he and Julia Barr had a nice friendship chemistry but zero sparks. Getting back to Genie, I think she worked really well on that show and a nice fit with the rest of the cast. I think it was just a more relaxed atmosphere for her at AMC, where she could be a didn't have to constantly be high profile and in one front burner story after another. She has glowing things to say about Eileen Herlie.

Genie Francis is a legend indeed and I never like to see veterans being taken off-contract. That being said, the awfulness of her acting on The Young and The Restless had pretty much sealed in my opinion that Laura is all that she can play decently.

And yet, Geary, with all his many vacations that caused storylines to halt for weeks at a time, never was lacking for story. Nor was he lacking for love interests, no matter how age appropriate or not. Same with Bernard, who was the lead of the show along with Burton, as GH ratings slid lower and lower - until Ron came in and made Sonny and Jason one of MANY stories and not THE story. Surprise! Ratings rose. And yet here we are, back to the same leads doing the same stories in one version or another, again and again. Yet Genie gets cut. GH has long had a history of treating the male stars better than the female and it looks like it continues. And now, they can throw ageism in the mix - if you are a female. If you are a male, no problem.

I remember watching Luke and Laura in 1980. I was in sixth grade and rushed home every day to catch the show. I had a major crush on the blond actor who played the mob hitman assigned to kill them. Does anybody know his name? He was one of the most handsome guys on tv.

Do they though, whenever I have checked out a soap board, they have always complained about Sonny, his acting, and he, Jason, Carly and the mob taking over the show.. I suppose internet boards probably do not accurately represent who is watching, but the remaining soaps seem to cling to things that appease a certain segment of their fan base but do not bring in new viewers much less younger viewers. When I was in college soaps were always on in the student unions and lounges with a lot of people watching, I suspect that is not the case anymore.

Frank only has some balls now because he got a ratings up from the Monavie scam king. It won't last.

Do we know that this was Frank's decision? Usually these things from the higher-ups. He tweeted last week about Laura's campaign heating up. Why would he hawk that storyline and then fire her the next week. I'm not fan of Frank's, but I think these decisions are made by more than just a puppet EP.

Who would've guessed in 1980 that 40 years later, Genie would get the Jessie Brewer/Audrey Hardy treatment?

Genie did a great job with the sex abuse storyline on AMC, but she had some really terrific actors like Stephen Joyce, Bethel Leslie, and Eileen Herlie backing her up. Agnes was also VERY involved with that storyline. She actually named the character based on her own niece, Ceara. She was pretty awful on Y&R, but the writing was not very good and the actors she interacted with like Daniel Goddard were pretty ghastly.

I remember when Glo Monty cut Rachel Ames, John Bernadino and Emily McLaughlin down to 20 shows a year. I think it was in 1984.

I am going to assume that Genie was making about $4000 an episode. They clearly needed to free that money up for something else. $4000 an episode will give you 4 newbies or maybe they needed some more cash for negotiations with another star or they have another big ticket actor coming to the show. What contracts are coming up for renewal? What roles are being cast? I’m gong to assume that SBu already negotiated his deal.

They should axe Howarth, Easton, and the Staff. They are both useless and probably cost a mint. With Tony gone, Genie should be the face of GH, not that stupid mobster and his minions.

Genie should have got her Emmy from the David Hamilton story. That whole store was soap writing and acting at its best.

I started watching the show when I was a kid and remember when Laura first came on. I had to go to a neighbor's house after school until my mom got home from work at 4:00 and she got me hooked. Can you imagine a storyline today with a 16 year old having an affair with her mother's lover?

I also watched rape scene and always thought it was not really rape, but seduction. And that she lied to explain why she was found in the park crying and late and felt bad for cheating on her husband. However, when I watched the episode during the 50th anniversary a few years ago, it was clear to me that it was rape-rape.

Haven't seen the show in ages, used to tune into SoapNet once in a while when it existed but didn't care enough to record it. Sorry to hear she continues to be mistreated by the show.

One summer day during the height of Luke and Laura when I was a gayling, we were at the municipal pool, and I informed my mom that I needed to get home by 3 to watch GH. Probably 1979 or 1980. My father and older/younger brothers were all meathead jocks who never "got" me. I don't think they even knew what a soap was. But I did. They were means of emotional escape from a world where I knew I didn't fit in. Anyway, I remember my mom's friend, upon hearing that I need to get home by 3, scornfully commenting to me, "Steven, you should've been born a girl." I've forgotten a lot about my childhood, but that remark has stayed with me for life.

She's already flopped on Y&R and we all know DOOL pays its actors in Burger King coupons so Genie might as well just retire from soaps.

R92 No denying that Y&R was a mess at that time and there was very little she could have done to save the storyline (and don't get me started with Cane) BUT she was really really bad. Seriously, rewatch her first appearance - that scene where she laughs maniacally in her kitchen and I dare you not to cringe. I was gobsmacked at how bad it was from the get-go.

R98 I don't deny Ava is probably tough to write for but Maura West is too much of a great actress to let go. She seriously lifts everything up. Get rid of Howarth, Easton, Stafford (urgh!) that have no purpose and probably cost a fortune. At least, Ava has ties to many characters on the canvas. Why is Nina still around? R109 As I recall, it was actually Genie's husband, Jonathan Frakes, who objected and made a bit of a stink. Genie was in the middle, but of course had to side with her husband.

Didn't Laura kill her step father's best friend lover? And got off? On what grounds? Self-defense? Insanity? Probably the latter. Laura always seemed like as nut, as did Luke. No wonder they clicked.

Remember their wedding? It was probably the biggest soap opera event of all time. Laura's wedding dress with the huge headpiece was hideous, total 80s over the top fashion. And what a shocker when she throws the bridal bouquet and SCOTTY catches it. I don't think anyone saw that coming. I never liked Scotty but I was hoping he'd beat the shit out of Luke. He had just cause; Luke stole his wife, his one and only true love, the incomparably beautiful and desirable Laura Webber (eye roll). After a brief fight in which Scotty is vanquished, Luke and Laura run away together to begin many years of soap opera insanity.

On his last night alive Laura tried to push him into running away and getting married. He finally told her how he really couldn't stand her and only loved Lesley. He ripped up all her love letters and threw then down the stairs. Laura conked him on the head with a statue. Then she lost her memory. The police found the letters and assumed Leslie and David were lovers. So she went on trial for murder. The reasons they thought Leslie was the killer was the police found only one signature on the letter. L.W. They though it was Leslie.

Of course Leslie recognized Laura's handwriting and allowed herself to be tried. Telling Rick that yes she was having an affair with David but didn't kill him. This cause Rick and Leslie to separate. Laura remembered she had killed him about halfway through Leslie's trial but waited to say something until right before the verdict of guilty was going to come in. She got off as a juvenile would have. Lots of community service and psychiatric care. Many forget that when Laura first came on she really wasn't the nice misunderstood little gal she became. She really was a hot mess when she first came on.

Here's an audio only of Laura confessing to Leslie about how long she knew. A great scene. GH used to be great on murder mysteries but they seem to have dropped that. In my humble opinion the two best stories GH ever had was Laura/David/Murder and The Diana Taylor murder. They really used to know how to write a murder.

The Diana Taylor murder was the longest story arc I remember. It was well worth it. Every time Robin Mattson came on the screen you went to the edge of your seat.

It just goes to show you how cultural attitudes have shifted. Laura was 15 or 16 when she gave up her v-card to law student Scotty and no one thought it was weird. Then she started fucking David Hamilton and people were ok with it. She married Scotty at 17 and Rick and Leslie were like well, she's almost 18 so whatever. Back then 18 was definitely considered an adult.

As I recall Lesley and Rick were reluctant to allow Laura to marry Scoty (she was underage, after all) and she gives them an ultimatum: if they can't get married, they'll just have sex without the benefit of marriage. She said that Scotty had "needs"...and that SHE had them, too. Of course, Lesley and Rick let demanding, bratty, selfish Laura have her way and she marries Scotty and they fulfill their "needs." I really don't understand why the character of Laura became so popular. She was AWFUL.

R119- I think Genie would have won the Emmy if they had the Younger Actress category back then, but she had to compete with the older actresses. GH was really turning out great stories back then - the whole Laura/David/Lesley followed by Luke/Laura/Scotty, the Left Handed Boy story, Diana Taylor's murder, the crazy Ice Princess storyline- no wonder so many people got hooked on it.

Where was your outrage when Heather Stamford was fired?

Teen Laura was so messed up and it was so good. You could write real stories for teens back then, because 16 and 17 year olds weren't treated like babies.

And the Susan Moore murder storyline was pretty good, too. Maybe not as well written, but you had the Quartermaines heavily involved, and they were always a hoot to watch. Alan and Monica always sniping at each other, Edward barely tolerating the rest of his family, Lila seemingly daffy but actually shrewd. I'm only sorry Tracy wasn't on the scene in those days. Add in some Heather and Scotty, some Scorpio, and shirtless Jimmy Lee, and I was revived.

But I'm on record as saying my two favorite storylines from soaps were (1) Diana's murder, which was so well-plotted they made you believe that Heather could actually slip in and out of Forest Hills, and (2) the fake Silver Kane (Connie Wilkes) gaslighting Erica and making her believe she was losing her mind... all the while transforming from shy, mousy girl into gorgeous sexpot (AMC).

Actually, I think the greatest storyline might have been the one from GH in the early 90s, the one where BJ died in the bus accident and her heart was given to Maxie. It's not so much that specific part, but the evolution of the entire storyline. It started as comic relief: Lucy made a bet with Damian Smith to see if he could bed any woman Lucy named. Being slightly jealous of what seemed to be their perfect marriage, she chose nemesis Bobbie Spencer convinced that Damien would never be able to win the bet. Anyway, it evolved and ended with the death of BJ and the total destruction of the Bobbie/Tony Jones marriage. A back-burner storyline that ended up using most of the major characters and completely took over the show. It took soap writing and acting to a higher dimension. It was riveting.

Well the great thing about the Diana Taylor murder(sorry Genie we're digressing) was how long they took. Heather just didn't swipe the keys from the nurse's station to get out. We watched her crazy mind take about six months to formulate how to get out of the nut house. BEFORE the murder even took place. It was just fucking brilliant. Then the ending in Alice's dingy little apartment was brilliant. "MY BABY. MY OWN BABY TURNED ME INTO A MURDERER!"

I would love it if Frank finally got dumped.

The mob has been on GH forever. Remember Frank Smith, the little black book, Mitch Williams (Tracy's first husband/Susan's lover)? and that was late 70s/early 80s. Back then, there were mob stories that were balanced out by Alan/Monica/Rick/Lesley, Jeff/Heather/Diana, etc.

I can't speak to storyline balance because I haven't watched in years. But what fucked things up in my opinion is their attempt to make Sonny/Jason ("the mob") as the heroes. Frank Smith was a villain, and not a shaded villain, he was 100% villain. He had to be; you can't have a soap opera character that does horrible shit to people, but then have scenes showing that he loves babies and puppies and flowers and rainbows.

Ryan's Hope tried it with Joe Novak, but the difference was that Joe was painted as a hero when he actually left the mob. They showed him struggling as his family tried to pull him back into the business, but he refused, and that's when Joe stopped being a villain and became a dark hero. (At least for a while... I think he got pulled back in and then was killed, but I can't recall in detail.)

The Sopranos wrote Tony as a complex character, struggling with his decisions, but I don't think anyone ever viewed him as a hero (anti-hero became the popular term). He was never a white hat. GH has yet to figure that out with Sonny. They try so hard to write him as a heroic mob boss, but while I watched, he never showed a struggle with his mob life, he never tried to get out of it, he never showed true remorse for his misdeeds. Not sure whether fault lies with the writers, producers, acting, whatever but that's where -for me - the mob ruined GH.
