The Crown, Season 2 started streaming last night

I watched the first episode.

It really seems to miss John Lithgow's presence as Churchill. Claire Foy's Elizabeth is more confident this season, but she is also so prissy; while Margaret, in contrast, seems like a drunk bitch. Why would the queen want to spend any time with her?

The costumes and sets continue to look great. Jeremy Northam looks REALLY old, but they've whitened his hair and he is playing older than he is.

by Anonymousreply 2December 8, 2017 3:32 PM

I actually started the thread linked

by Anonymousreply 3December 8, 2017 3:34 PM

It's a weird season so far. They're still stuck in the 50s four episodes in. They don't explicitly say Philip cheated on his wife, but they imply it strongly (like the first season).

I'm kind of tired of Foy's same bag of tricks--the stiffening of the jaw to indicate distress, the "oh" to indicate surprised disapproval.

by Anonymousreply 4December 8, 2017 4:48 PM

Watched the first two episodes of Season 2 and really found them lacklustre.

by Anonymousreply 5December 8, 2017 7:58 PM
It really seems to miss John Lithgow's presence as Churchill.

As indeed Britain missed the man himself.

by Anonymousreply 6December 8, 2017 8:03 PM
while Margaret, in contrast, seems like a drunk bitch. Why would the queen want to spend any time with her?

Well, she was basically a drunk, drug addicted bitch, wasn't she? The Queen's Sister (2005, clip at link with Dame Maggie Smith's lookalike son Toby Stephens) was pretty good at portraying how her whole life was more or less pointless as the unnecessary, spoiled, "spare heir."

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 7December 8, 2017 8:11 PM

Her life was "pointless" because ... she wouldn't be Queen of England? Don't tell the billions of others in the same boat!

by Anonymousreply 8December 8, 2017 8:13 PM

They could have made it clearer, though, why Elizabeth agreed to spend so much time with Margaret during their life. Even among the royal family there are cases where siblings avoided each other as much as they could; but Elizabeth actively sought out Margaret's company in real life, as she does on the show. But Margaret only has bitchy comments to make to her about Philip.

by Anonymousreply 9December 8, 2017 8:15 PM

The series gets much better as it goes. The first three episodes with the Suez crisis and Philip on his big trip are pretty interminable, but then it becomes about Margaret's courtship of Tony Armstrong-Jones, and Harold Macmillan and his philandering and almost hilariously mean wife Dorothy (the great British stage actress Sylvestra LeTouzel) take important roles.

by Anonymousreply 10December 8, 2017 11:26 PM

One of the themes for the season is that marriage is pretty horrible. Almost none of the marriages depicted are happy: Elizabeth and Philip, Mike and Irene Parker, Harold Macmillan and wife, JFK and Jackie, Mountbatten and a... in most of them the partners loathe each other (the queen's marriage is the most functional and even it is unhappy). And of course Margaret's marriage to Lord Snowden is going to be the most miserable of all (although they don;t know it fully yet).

by Anonymousreply 11December 9, 2017 12:20 AM

I'm enjoying it, though I wish they would get the hell out of the mid50s. The fourth episode with Margaret being seduced by Tony Armstrong-Jones is terrific--even though Matthew Goode has practically no chin, he's still very sexy.

by Anonymousreply 12December 9, 2017 6:48 PM

I agree that the big mistake this season was spending three episodes on Philip's Australia trip and the Suez Crisis. Two episodes would have been more than enough, and that would have left more time to explore Margaret and her scandalous private life: a much more interesting thing to explore.

Once you make it past those first three episodes, the series picks up considerably.

by Anonymousreply 13December 9, 2017 7:11 PM

The series gets much better as it goes.

There's a lot of staging meetings with people with the queen that probably never happened (I can guarantee you Jackie Kennedy never told the queen about JFK abusing her or their taking drugs), but it does make the series more dramatic. As with last season, the second-to-last episode acts as pretty much a standalone drama with very little of the queen herself in it, and again it's the season standout: this one is all about how miserable Charles is at the horrible public school his father sends him to, Gordonstoun in Northern Scotland, and why Philip sends him there (with many flashbacks to Philip's tortured past).

The episode where Margaret marries Anthony Armstrong-Jones is also superb, with the story probing intelligently why Armstrong-Jones married her in the first place (i.e. to impress his distant and social-climbing mother) when he obviously never loved her. Margaret is beside herself with bliss, and Armstrong-Jones realizes on the drive to Westminster Abbey he's made a terrible mistake.

by Anonymousreply 14December 10, 2017 3:29 AM

Matthew Goode looks like what happens when a cat fucks a robot and no one stops it, and then they have a baby. What a weird looking dude.

by Anonymousreply 15December 14, 2017 4:29 AM

And who do you find attractive, R15?

by Anonymousreply 16December 14, 2017 4:50 AM

You, R16.

by Anonymousreply 17December 14, 2017 5:13 AM

What a boring season this was. I’m ready for some Diana and Camilla action.

by Anonymousreply 18December 16, 2017 3:45 PM

Michael C Hall as JFK was just bizarre.

Jackie going into the castle to meet the queen with all of her mounted guards & then more guards on the stairs was the most funny moment of the whole series. They did that to just be camp, right? I mean, that's not even remotely believable. "Make way for the Queen's Guard!" with 50 horses about to trample Jackie... lol.

The JFK episode was good though. I liked this season, except where it dragged on too long in some of the scenes. The pacing wasn't that even.

by Anonymousreply 19December 16, 2017 3:55 PM

How's this for a laugh...

by Anonymousreply 20December 17, 2017 10:44 AM

Season 2 was good overall but nowhere as consistently good as season 1 IMO.

Michael C Hall was terrible as JFK. He sounded nor looked anything like JFK. Hall was very good in Dexter but his performance in The Crown missed the mark.

Claire Foy is most definitely the best actor on this show now that John Lithgow(as Churchill) is gone. She's really the anchor of the whole series. Alex Jennings, who plays the Duke of Windsor is also very good in his role.

by Anonymousreply 21December 18, 2017 7:07 AM
#TheCrown is stunning every episode jus well shot, well acted and incredibly historically accurate ... i will say I’m tired of watching shows where every last person except a servant is white, accurate or not. Not here for the daily reminder of white supremacy

First of all, they had a whole episode that revolved around President Nkrumah of Ghana, and neither he nor anyone is his cabinet were white.

Next: did this idiot really think they'd have a black actor play prince Philip? or Elizabeth II?

by Anonymousreply 22December 18, 2017 7:20 AM

How about Margaret referring to Princess Marina as a minor royal? Marina's husband, the Duke of Kent, was King George's (Margaret's father) brother.

No wonder people hated her.

by Anonymousreply 23December 31, 2017 7:28 PM

I loved Season 2 as I did Season 1. Superb acting, direction, art direction, costumes.

by Anonymousreply 24December 31, 2017 8:39 PM

Now The Crown chat is on this thread, folks.

by Anonymousreply 25January 6, 2018 12:28 AM

Helena Bonham Carter as Maggie. Nice casting.

by Anonymousreply 26January 6, 2018 12:34 AM
Marina's husband, the Duke of Kent, was King George's (Margaret's father) brother.

Wait, what? I thought there were just the three brothers: Margaret's and QEII's father, the Nazi king who abdicated, and the younger brother who died of epilepsy. You mean to say there was [italic]more[/italic] of them?! Or was this the epilepsy one?

by Anonymousreply 27January 6, 2018 12:51 AM

I agree HBloodyBC as Princess Margaret is great casting--and next season will allow for a great performance from Margaret, since she will be psychologically tortured by her husband, take up with Roddy Llewellyn, and become the first major royal to divorce--only to watch her family then refuse to close ranks around her and prefer Lord Snowden to herself! I hope she gets an Emmy for it.

by Anonymousreply 28January 6, 2018 12:52 AM
Wait, what? I thought there were just the three brothers:

No,George and Mary had six children. You know Princess Michael of Kent that has become a DL benefactress? Well she married Prince Michael of Kent. George, Duke of Kent was Michael's father, which makes him first cousin to Queen Elizabeth. George, Duke of Kent was also bisexual.

The next question is why did George and Mary name two of their children George? Actually, this one's first name was George. Elizabeth's father was Albert Frederick Arthur George.

R29 Holy shit, this changes *everything*!

by Anonymousreply 30January 6, 2018 1:22 AM

R22, Pomolibs of color aren't interested in their own history. Not glamorous enough to them. Only rewriting European and/or white history to star them will satisfy, just like the trans and Stonewall. They're spitting in their ancestors' faces by obsessively claiming someone else's history at the expense of their own (e.g. Hamilton).

by Anonymousreply 31January 6, 2018 1:36 AM

You want something that will really rock your world? It is believed that George, Duke of Kent fathered an illegitimate child with Kiki Preston. The child was adopted and raised as Michael Canfield. Canfield married Lee Bouvier.

by Anonymousreply 32January 6, 2018 1:38 AM

They had 4-5 boys and 1 girl I believe. The daughter, Mary married into the Lascelles family...thus making Tommy a distant member of the family by marriage.

John passed away early from autism or epilepsy.

I think another died during one of the wars....maybe Kent?

There were: King George (born Albert), John, Dukes of Windsor (Edward who abdicated), Kent and Gloucester and Mary, Countess of Harewood.

by Anonymousreply 33January 6, 2018 1:39 AM
I think another died during one of the wars....maybe Kent?

Yes, Kent died in WW2, after having bed half of England and imbibing in large amounts of drugs.

R37 Olivia Colman is not that big. The show is a hit so they're able to attact better talent.

by Anonymousreply 39January 6, 2018 4:09 AM

How big of a name are you thinking? Season 1 had John Lithgow, Jared Harris and Eileen Atkins. Plus the show has attracted a lot of familiar faces who may not be A list, but they are well known on British tv: Ben Miles, Anton Lesser, Harriet Walter, Alex Jennings and others.

I assume inspired by the success of The Crown, Netflix has a documentary series now called the House of Windsor.

It's excellent

But if they announced recasting of ALL roles then I guess not...

by Anonymousreply 49January 6, 2018 4:12 PM

Bummer I think the guy playing Mountbatten now is a hot daddy.

by Anonymousreply 50January 6, 2018 8:22 PM

They need to write Helen Mirren a blank check to play the Queen in S5/S6.

by Anonymousreply 51January 6, 2018 8:29 PM

I love the visit to Ghana. This scene isn't entirely by-the-books, but it captures the spirit of the visit, and the dance with Kwame Nkrumah, which was shocking to many. There are real films from British Pathé that are fascinating to watch, for anyone who wants to compare the series to the documented events.

Just watched Netflix's documentary The House of Windsor's first episode.

It began a little stodgily but was really riveting by the end. All of the drama of The Crown but seen through real historic footage. The first episode covered the days before WWI and ended with the victory of WWII. Less than an hour so it moved along briskly.

I recommend it!

by Anonymousreply 62January 7, 2018 2:25 PM

Perhaps that's true about Margaret, r62.

But it's interesting to watch all of the footage of her as a teenage girl in the Netflix doc where she seems quite modest and easy-going. In the 2nd episode we see her and her sister on a 3 month long trip to South Africa, frolicing on the huge battleship with hundreds of young sailors and Margaret appears very sweet and shy.
Both before and after his marriage, Prince George had a string of affairs with both men and women, from socialites to Hollywood celebrities. The better known of his lovers included banking heiress Poppy Baring, socialite Margaret Whigham (later Duchess of Argyll and involved in a notoriously scandalous divorce case), and Barbara Cartland (who believed him to be the father of her daughter Raine McCorquodale).[25]
There were "strong rumours" that he had affairs with musical star Jessie Matthews,[26] writer Cecil Roberts[27] and Noël Coward,[28] a relationship which Coward's long-term boyfriend, Graham Payn, denied.[29] The security services "reported that Coward and Kent had been seen parading together through the streets of London, dressed and made up as women, and had once been arrested by the police for suspected prostitution".[30]
The Duke of Kent is rumoured to have been addicted to drugs, especially morphine and cocaine, a rumour which reputedly originated with his friendship with Kiki Preston,[31][32][33] whom he first met in the mid-1920s. Reportedly, Prince George shared Kiki in a ménage à trois with Argentinian Jorge Ferrara.[34] Other alleged sexual liaisons were with the art historian and Soviet spy Anthony Blunt, Indira Raje, Maharani of Cooch Behar,[26] and José Uriburu, son of the Argentinian ambassador to the UK, José Uriburu Tezanos.[35]
In his attempt to rescue his cocaine-addicted brother from the influence of Kiki, Edward, the Prince of Wales, attempted for a while to persuade both George and Kiki to break off their contact, to no avail.[36] Eventually, Edward forced George to stop seeing Kiki and also forced Kiki to leave England, while she was visiting George there in the summer of 1929.[37] For years afterwards, Edward feared that George might relapse to drugs if he maintained his contact with Kiki. Indeed, in 1932, Prince George ran into Kiki unexpectedly at Cannes and had to be removed almost by force.[38]

R81, I'm sure the current Royals would prefer the public not know more about the late Prince George, as he's the father of the current Duke of Kent, Princess Alexandra and Prince Michael.

She was nicknamed "the girl with the silver syringe", due to her habit of always carrying with her a syringe with which she injected herself.[38][43][44] She was reported to often take out the silver syringe to inject herself, oblivious to onlookers. Swedish Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke's second wife, Cockie, once wittily remarked of Kiki: "She's very clever with her needle".[43] Kiki was one of the best clients of the chief drug dealer of the Kenya colony, Frank Greswolde Williams, until his death in 1932. Whenever she was out of morphine, she would send an aeroplane to pick up new supplies.[32][43]

by Anonymousreply 106March 11, 2018 5:05 AM

Will Hugh Laurie have to wear lifts?

by Anonymousreply 107March 11, 2018 5:17 AM

Omg that blows.

by Anonymousreply 108March 12, 2018 11:56 AM

It really does. Awful casting.

by Anonymousreply 109March 12, 2018 1:38 PM

Yeah Hugh Laurie is a very weird choice.

It is a pity Paul Bettany didn't want the role, he seemed like a good match.

by Anonymousreply 110March 12, 2018 1:54 PM

I still think Matthew McFadyen would have been great, with his wife Keeley Hawes as Margaret.

[bold]Claire Foy Was Paid Less Than Matt Smith on ‘The Crown’[/bold]

Embarrassing and unbelievable news.
Asked whether Foy was paid the same as Smith, the producers acknowledged that he did make more due to his “Doctor Who” fame, but that they would rectify that for the future. “Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen,” said Mackie.

R112–Makes perfect sense. Smith is a bigger name than Foy. I’m sure the dude playing Churchill got more than Smith

by Anonymousreply 116March 14, 2018 3:40 AM

No, R116, John Lithgow didn’t get more than Smith. Churchill was a supporting role.

by Anonymousreply 117March 14, 2018 3:42 AM

Matt Smith looked SO hot as Phillip.

by Anonymousreply 118March 14, 2018 12:13 PM

With Bettany out, Laurie in, and the ridiculous HBC stunt casting, I will give season three a hard pass. They could possibly still redeem it with brilliant casting for Charles, but that doesn't seem likely now.

by Anonymousreply 119March 14, 2018 12:16 PM

I’m looking forward to seeing what Colman does with Liz, though.

by Anonymousreply 120March 14, 2018 12:49 PM

r116 Doesn't make any kind of sense, let alone "perfect sense". Hence the dragging on social media this news has been getting. And the fact that this shit went on for the whole of season 2 as well is extraordinary and makes me like Matt Smith less.

[bold]‘The Crown’ Sets ‘Outlander’s Tobias Menzies As New Prince Philip[/bold]
Tobias Menzies has closed a deal to play Prince Philip in Season 3 of Netflix’s The Crown. This is the role that Paul Bettany had been in early talks to play before he abdicated for unspecified reasons. Menzies has signed on for the next two seasons, and begins shooting this summer in the UK.

by Anonymousreply 125March 28, 2018 10:36 PM

I still think Paul Bettany was the best choice for Seasons 3 & 4.

by Anonymousreply 126March 28, 2018 10:52 PM

by Anonymousreply 127March 28, 2018 11:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 128March 28, 2018 11:18 PM

Tobias Menzies is a good choice for Philip. He always seems onscreen like he has a major stick shoved up his ass, just like the real Duke of Edinburgh.

I'm not sure that he'll have much to do this season, except to purse his lips over Maragret's affair with Roddy Llewellyn.

He'll have more fun in the fourth season when he (inevitably) gets to tell Charles to stop sniveling at the table after the death of Louis Mountbatten and to say cryptic and menacing things to the young Diana.

by Anonymousreply 158July 17, 2018 1:47 AM

Olivia Colman looks great, and she's about the best actress of her age group in the UK.

These two seasons will cover the least dramatic years in Elizabeth's life, 1964-mid Eighties (her early reign had her coronation, Philip's philandering, and the Peter Townsend crisis; the later years have the fire at Windsor Castle, the divorces of three of her children, and the deaths of Diana and her mother and sister), but at least we know she should be amazing in these seasons.

by Anonymousreply 159July 17, 2018 3:05 AM
These two seasons will cover the least dramatic years in Elizabeth's life, 1964-mid Eighties

We get the attempted kidnap of Anne. That will cover one whole episode. They'll definitely have an episode about the Queen being dowdy against the 1960s Carnaby Street fashions. And we'll have the sexual awakening of Prince Charles.

by Anonymousreply 160July 17, 2018 3:20 AM

I hope we get some nude scenes. O'Connor isn't shy about showing off his butt and peen.

by Anonymousreply 161July 17, 2018 3:40 AM

by Anonymousreply 163July 17, 2018 7:40 PM

Peter Morgan has already said what Season 3 covers.
Confirming two more seasons of Netflix hit “The Crown,” creator Peter Morgan says he is thick into the writing process for both seasons, which will be shot one after the other. Season 3 will span the years 1964 to 1976 and usher in Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, replacing Claire Foy.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 164July 17, 2018 7:47 PM

I think Morgan’s plans changed when casting was finalized. It could start in 1964 but fast forward very quickly. Anne and Charles are being played by young adults.

by Anonymousreply 165July 17, 2018 9:30 PM
Anne and Charles are being played by young adults.

Well, since the plan is til 1976, that will be needed. Prince Charles was 28 in 1976.

But yes, I do imagine we will spend more time in the 70s, with the 60s being finished off in a couple episodes.

No, it should be captioned “Equine.”

by Anonymousreply 174July 18, 2018 11:31 PM

I can already tell you the ending of this segment. It takes place in 1976. It shows Elizabeth boarding her ship with Philip. She has just left the United States of America, which is in the midst of celebrating their Bicentennial. She is seen standing on the deck with the Statue of Liberty in the background bathed in fireworks. She turns to her husband and she says, "Oh, Philip, where did we go wrong? To be young, gifted and free!"

by Anonymousreply 175July 19, 2018 12:51 AM
We get the attempted kidnap of Anne. That will cover one whole episode.

Episode 4 will be an Anne-centric episode, but it won't just be the attempted kidnapping. I think it will also feature the courtship of Anne by Mark Phillips, and then their wedding--the latter happened just weeks before the attempted kidnapping.

by Anonymousreply 176July 19, 2018 2:12 AM

Charles's caption word should be "Indecisive."

Philip's should be "Sulky" or "Thwarted."

The Queen Mother's should be "Gaga" or "Dotty."

It should be an interesting season. They'll show the death and burial of the Duke of Windsor, and also how the royal family dealt with the Duchess of Windsor when she came to England in 1973 (the first time, I think, since 136) for his funeral. By that time she had the weirdest hairdo ever.

They'll have an episode on Charles' courtship of and then breaking with Camilla before he left for the navy tour.

by Anonymousreply 177July 19, 2018 2:17 AM

Here's a photo of Erin Doherty, who is playing Anne, next to Anne herself.

r181, I'm not even 30 so no I don't remember her from her younger years. But pictures and videos don't lie, she was a basic woman with dusty ass brittle pad looking hair. She was basic, as in not terrible when young but no great beauty.

I watched season one last week, but it didn't really hold my attention. It's one of those shows where you can miss a scene and it won't affect your understanding of the plot. The characterizations are not very deep and they do not evolve or deepen in any way. How many more episodes of Phillip's bratty sulking? Or Margaret's frivolousness?

Matt Smith is good looking compared to the rest of the male cast, but what a ham. I'm going to fast forward through the Suez crisis episodes.

Alex Jennings is a standout. Best scenes in the show, hands down. Jared Harris too.

Couldn't they find a better looking actor to play Peter Townsend?

John Lithgow is good as Churchill, but I've recently watched Darkest Hour and Gary Oldman gave a much more nuanced performance.

R211, Netflux released six episodes of Kimmy Schmidt a few months ago (for awards consideration) and will release the rest of the season (its last) in January.
