Donna Karan's comment about how women dress was quickly snuffed and shamed.
But there is a disconnect with the majority of women altering their appearance as much as possible to look like porn actresses, dressing in clothes two sizes too small for all occasions, then crying harassment and assault when men approach them or say anything sexual.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | November 24, 2017 6:37 AM |
R13, it doesn't matter if a woman is a full-time prostitute, that still doesn't give anyone the right to rape her or to require sexual services as a condition of employment. Or to maul her and call it a joke, for that matter. I know this goes totally counter to your normal way of thinking, but the fact is that women have dignity and rights, even the whores.
Contrary to what they told you in Saudi Arabia, it's not actually okay to call a women who's having more sex than you are a whore, and to abuse her in any way you like.

by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 24, 2017 6:52 PM |
R13 It makes sense to me why certain straight guys would have this sort of mindset (I imagine most of them are creepy, bitter MRA types who like the idea of women getting harassed and abused for being "teases"), but for the life of me, I don't understand why a gay male would. Envy, perhaps?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 24, 2017 7:38 PM |
Of course some women are whores, R27, and so are some men! But what you don't realize is that you aren't better than the whores, and here in the civilized world you have no right to punish them for being whores.
Oh, you don't have to like them, but if you rape a known whore or try to intimidate them, you'll face the same legal penalties as if you'd been abusing a nun. And just so you know, if you try to conduct any sort of social-condemnation campaign against a whore or whores, the majority of people will probably side with the whores. Look at the present situation, nobody's defending Weinstein except a few crazies, everyone's siding with the women even though they obviously aren't nuns.

In Oz last yesterday, a once huge lifestyle/garden tv icon from the eighties and nineties was outed as being a huge bully and harasser. He had a near twenty year run and was hugely popular and profitable at the time. Women who complained at the time were told basically that he was worth a lot of revenue - and themselves - not so much. His name was Don Burke for anyone interested and his career is but a memory now - so he’ll have to find his own dough to pay for any legal response to accusations now (he was interviewed on two news shows here last night and already between tapings his story had altered somewhat. Slippery, fake bastard!)
Also - gather that one journalist - herself the subject of workplace abuse when younger - is taking up the Roman Farrow mantle here in Australia and is digging behind the scenes to see if anyone is willing to go on the record about rumours of abusive behaviour in the local entertainment industry.
One target in particular is very well known internationally and considered a bit of a national treasure. If many come forward it’ll blow people’s minds. Have heard rumours that he’s even doing a Weinstein in as far as his lawyers are contacting people who may be victims of his bad behaviour - and doing their best to discourage any unpleasant revelations... At this stage - no idea if it’ll get out into the public domain. But certainly there are moves afoot...fingers crossed!

[quote]One target in particular is very well known internationally and considered a bit of a national treasure
Well, it sounds like Russell Crowe, but it wouldn’t surprise anyone to discover he was an abuser or harasser. And you could be referencing Hugh Jackman, could you? He has a sterling reputation as a nice guy.
Who else is an Aussie national treasure who’s internationally well known?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | November 28, 2017 1:36 AM |
R44, I immediately thought of Russell Crowe.
There was an article written about him in the early 2000 by a female reporter for some high profile magazine. I really felt sorry for her because it sounded like she underwent hell when she visited him on his ranch.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 28, 2017 1:39 AM |
Well, that’s what I mean, r46. I read the same article, and on top of that, Crowe has a reputation for his ugly temper. I can’t imagine anyone’s minds being blown if it starts to come out that he’s abusive. It would be more shocking to find out he’s actually been a nice guy this whole time.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | November 28, 2017 2:21 AM |
R45, 46 & 47 -
Nope. Crowe is hardly a ‘national treasure’ here! He’s liked by many - but not universally! - and many think he’s both pretentious - and a yob. He’s done well for himself though - so snaps to him. I haven’t heard rumours that would indicate he harassed anybody - and in his younger days women fell all over themselves to get with him (which became a huge joke here as allegedly some who were successful compared notes - and discovered he says ‘Go Russell, go!’ when he cums. Word got around. And true or false - it became a bit of a catchphrase. Dunno in the end if he would have been embarrassed or flattered that it did.
Not Jackman either. Too young for national treasure status. And only ever heard good things about him professionally over the years.
Of course - who knows what this investigation here will turn up? But haven’t heard anything untoward about either of them.
You’ll have to try harder than that... c’mon. You can do it...

Heya! It’s morning here in Oz - and I’m awake and onboard again...
Amazed at all the Australian names they’ve been put forward as possibilities - some of ‘em have been dug out from deep in the woodwork -
And yet none of them are the person that’s been referred to in my original post.
Which really does make me think there’ll be a lot of shock here when it drops cos it’s so unexpected.
I don’t wanna preempt the hard work the investigative journalists are doing too much. Seems unfair! But will give another clue: it’s someone from the entertainment industry (as opposed to sport, literature and the arts, or politics).
And not saying that any of the other names mentioned might also end up being involved - but none of them are on the radar so far.
(Really don’t know who else will turn out to have been culpable over the years. If any of you here are also from Oz and are following the saga, one of the journalists - Tracey Spicer - originally tweeted for people’s stories about two men here in the entertainment industry who are notorious abusers. She and another colleague were inundated with people telling them about Don Burke - who wasn’t on their radar at all. So you really don’t know who else is gonna end up outed for bad behaviour. I think It’ll take longer for them to get info from people who are willing to go on record about the two men they originally were investigating - the guys are still working in the industry and are heavy hitters compared with Burke - who has long since retired and faded from the public consciousness. Incidentally - how fucking disgusting is Burke? Especially galling is his ‘explanation’ for being vile: he’s just been diagnosed as having Aspergers - SELF-diagnosed mind you! - so he’s not very good at reading other people’s body language and social signals, etc. FUCKER! I know several actual people with Aspergers and none of them behave in anything like that way! He’s doing a Spacey - when Spacey threw gay people under a bus. Arsehole. Hope he ends up ruined.)

Jack Thompson - very famous in Australia, known (but not super well-known) internationally. In the 1970s he was very open about his poly-amorous setup with two sisters. He's still married to one of them I think but the other did some interviews a couple of years ago saying she looks back and realises she was being taken for a fool. He posed for a centrefold. The Rush situation is interesting here. Apparently the original piece in Oz press was pulled - legal issues. He’s got his lawyers onto it. Whether there are enough people willing to come forward and go on record with accusations remains to be seen. I suspect that if you’re an actor and do so - that will be your career done. It’s a small pond and a closed shop. I think our libel laws are stricter too. On the upside - he’s an international celebrity - so international press coverage isn’t as restricted...
And from what I hear - it isn’t just isolated incidents.
Interestingly, the local sleeze/ bully/abuser who was outed here the other day - Don Burke -pleaded innocence - and Aspergers! - and couldn’t why ‘so many people were out to get him’ - and assumed they were disgruntled former staffers with axes to grind...
Which really pissed off one of our former Olympic swimming champions - herself a minor icon - who was disgusted by his behaviour when he was there to interview her for his show. She was gobsmacked and complained to the tv network management and made a fuss at the time. She came forward now to point out she wasn’t a disgruntled employee and had no axe to grind. He was only in her life for a short time for an interview (where she was standing next to a painting - by her husband - of a flower. And appropos of nothing, Burke asked her if her cunt was as big as the flower. In front of his crew. Just out of the blue...) Fucking psycho!

Australian defamation laws are a lot stricter than the US, from memory we don’t even have the “truth” defence (ie, the publication has complete protection of what they write about someone is true). Mind you this was 20 years ago studying media at uni, my memory is a little foggy.
I’ve had experience working in the Australian media machine and can confirm there are more than a few truly rotten eggs. I’m waiting for the dominos to fall, because they will.

It's no disconnect. These harassing pigs that run the show want them to dress like that. Do you think they can dress in normal clothes?. The ho look is part of the backlash against genuine feminism. That was when it started. Hollywood pigs demand that they dress that way.

Saying a female deserves to be raped or harasssed because she dresses slutty is like saying someone deserves to be car jacked because they drive a Ferrari. 7 dark secrets about the real Peter Pan include suicide and pedophilia
1. J.M. Barrie stole his own "lost boys" According to Piers Dudgeon, the author of Captivated: J.M. Barrie, the Du Mauriers & the Dark Side of Neverland, Barrie manipulated his way into the lives of Sylvia and Arthur Llewelyn Davies, the parents of three boys, George, Jack and baby Peter. Barrie apparently lavished gifts on the family and spent hours with the boys having adventures in the park and making up stories.

Lori Mattix told Thrillist that, in the early ’70s, “[David Bowie] escorted me into the bedroom, gently took off my clothes, and de-virginized me.” She went on:
“Two hours later, I went to check on Sable. She was all fucked up in the living room, walking around, fogging up windows and writing, “I want to fuck David.” I told him what she was doing and that I felt so bad. Bowie said, “Well, darling, bring her in.” That night I lost my virginity and had my first threesome. The next morning, there was banging on the door and it was fucking [Bowie’s wife] Angie.”
This took place when Mattix was around 13 or 14-years-old (some sources say she was 15, but in a vh1 documentary, Mattix says this happened before she was with Jimmy Page (at which point she was only 13 or 14). He also faced rape allegations in 1987.

[quote]After being sexually harassed a great number of times in my twenties, I developed a posture of “You’re not coming near me.” I developed a tougher exterior and expressed far less of my femininity in the workplace. Men would say to me, “You’re so tough,” but it was just self-protection. And I feel sadder about that, than fending off the harassers. For me it was a loss. I had to shut down my femininity, softness, and vulnerability, which are vital components of your creativity. Because sometimes, if you expressed those things then you opened doors to sexual components that you didn’t plan on. So you just shut it down. I didn’t want to fend off men, I wanted to be appreciated as an equal, taken seriously, and do my work. And I feel terrible sadness in my heart that in order to do that I had to shut off part of myself. It took a lot of internal work to get back to an open creative flow as the years went by.
I had a female crew member say as much to me after running into her a few times on different projects and getting to know her. I do try when I can to strike up conversations with women on the set (if there are any) who are not part of hair, makeup or wardrobe. Since I'm not out I get to give them some support as a guy who is just there as a co worker and chill space.
Ran in to her recently and she started talking about Drag Race. She told me that since she comes to work and mostly leaves her femininity behind she often feels divorced from it and she gets a little depressed. But watching the queens she realized that what she is doing at work is drag, it's her work drag tough girl persona. No different than any of the queens in theirs. Watching them, she says, has given her new appreciation of being a woman (that part I don't quite get) and brings her back in touch with her feminine self. And naturally the entertainment value is off the charts and she's trying to get some of the other guys she works with to watch.

I'm glad all the cockroaches are being caught in the light. But I'd like to see the conversation start shifting toward how we can short-circuit these behaviors in people who are misusing their power, whether that be because they have major hangups about not feeling heard in previous instances in their lives or because they are straight up sociopaths or because they're misogynists or because they have a really iffy understanding of professional boundaries or all of those things and more. There have been times in my life when I've wielded great power over less established people and I had a lot of people throwing themselves at me who were attracted simply by my power. Had I not been so goddamned busy, I have no doubt that I would have taken more advantage of several of those situations than I did. Now, I wasn't promising anybody anything, but there was clearly a reflex assumption that winning me over sexually/socially/etc. was going to yield a professional payoff. And these people weren't wrong: of course, people reward their allies and are generally inclined to overlook mistakes and under-punish misdeeds made by people whom they feel warmly towards. In entertainment, and The Arts, in general, the lines between colleagues and friends are more blurred than in any other industry. If you're in a band, guess who you're socializing with? If you're in a play, guess who you're going out for drinks with afterward? If you're on a shoot, you're spending 14 hour days, much of which is spent standing around waiting, with your colleagues and of course the discourse veers from professional to personal during those long days, weeks, months. And it is survival instinct to try to join ranks with the winning team, even if one knows there are initiation rituals that will be unsettling. We cannot turn even half the population into moral saints. Religion was invented, in part, to frighten people into behaving well. So, the question, I think, becomes how much change to our social power structures are people willing to invest in and actualize and how much can we really separate innate survival instincts from our social power structures?
