Anybody watch "The Good Place" and think Manny Jacinto (Jason) is adorable?

I thought his Asian soul mate in the second season opener was equally attractive.

So I saw the first few episodes from the first season.
Only enough to know that there had been a mistake where she was sent or so she thought.
I saw the premier and am I to surmise that she really did end up in hell and the Ted Danson character is a demon and they are torturing all those people?
Like they could do a better job of torturing themselves by thinking they didn't deserve heaven and thus are miserable? Unable to really enjoy "heaven"? š¤š¤

It's amazingly funny and sharp and quick. I can't believe it's a sitcom on NBC.
THAT TWIST! I was expecting a twist, so I was floored.
The second season is hitting all the right notes, and by turning The Good Place into Michael's own personal hell- brilliant.

R12 Or perhaps we just like exchanging opinions? You know, as people on discussion boards are prone to do.

I guess I just wasnāt looking for a twist in a sitcom. Even though I had grown increasingly interested in the show over the course of the first season, I was as in the dark as the cast was when they did the table read for the final episode of season one.
Watch the video at the link. It is so awesome watching these people finally piece together the crazy sitcom they have been filming for the last few months.

In the first season, I figured the twist out around when Jason revealed that he wasn't really a monk and was another bad person like Eleanor. The writing on the show is good and the cast has great chemistry. I like that the character of Janet was expanded on in this season. I wonder if there will be some kind of twist where it's revealed that the Good Place Janet was somehow designed as a trap for Michael.

I think this show will snubbed by the Emmys again this year. Critics do love the show, but the problem is Emmy voters stay set in nominating the same people and shows for cycles at a time.

This isn't exactly an earth-shattering premise - dead people think they're in heaven but it turns out it's hell. It's just an expanded Twilight Zone episode. The trick is what you do with it. Did you actually pitch these specific characters and relationships - a bad angel trying to get ahead by "innovating" new types of torture, one of them being an ethics professor, one being a complete idiot - was that your pitch?

r53, I refused to watch the show to find out the characters. Just it was my premise.
It was over 10 years ago and at a pitch festival hosted by (wont say) and his [again won't disclose]. We just went around to different tables pitching our ideas to these "executive" or people they sent. This asshole shot down my finished spec, was like what else you got, I said 2 or 3 other things and he was like, no, no, don't like it. Then I said my pitch about a woman who gets into heaven by a technical mistake and he said, that's not bad.
Don't know who he is.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | November 21, 2017 9:27 PM |
R56 How do you know it's similar if you haven't seen it? Again, the premise of a woman getting into heaven due to a technical mistake seems too broad to be able to claim it. Besides, the end of the first season reveals that it wasn't a mistake at all and she actually went to hell and everyone is pretending that it's heaven.

They just renewed it for another season. NBC seems ok with not having huge ratings. I remember reading it somewhere that it does better than Superstore in the ratings.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 22, 2017 6:35 PM |
The Good Place may do well on Netflix, since it's short enough to bingewatch easily. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which has low ratings, does well on Netflix--particularly in the UK--and that has something to do with it being renewed (that and the prestige factor for CW.)
by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 22, 2017 10:08 PM |
Mike Schur told NBC in the beginning that he only wanted the seasons to be 13 episodes long. So that's probably another factor into why it keeps getting renewed.

[quote]This thread has reminded me how unappreciated Cold Case is. It's a shame it is still not on DVD. The music rights will be a nightmare; however, considering the show started in the DVD era, it's a little surprising they didn't finalize those contractual details to ensure the show got a release in physical and digital formats.
I used to watch a lot of crime procedural shows like CSI, Law&Order in addition to Cold Case. But, Cold Case was the one procedural show that I would have loved to have on DVD. Whenever I would see CSI, L&0, and NCIS DVDs in stores I never wanted to buy them. Sadly, Cold Case is pretty much forgotten by many because ION stopped showing reruns a couple of years ago. Anyone want to venture a guess who it might be? (Does anyone know who D'Arcy Carden idolizes?)
I'm starting to think it will be a woman, since all the people (well, demons) in power thus far have been played by men.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | January 19, 2018 6:40 PM |
R104 I also think the judge will be a woman. My prediction for the judge reveal is that the four make to the judge's office in that portal and at first we see a figure with their backs of them and the four humans mistakenly assume the judge is a man and then we see the figure turn and it's revealed to be a woman.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | January 19, 2018 7:02 PM |
[quote]Anyone want to venture a guess who it might be? (Does anyone know who D'Arcy Carden idolizes?)
A couple of months I listened to a podcast that D'Arcy did. I think it was the Box Angeles podcast. She got into the improv scene in New York and heavily praised Amy Poehler and UCB. But, being in entertainment, D'Arcy probably idolizes a lot of people.
There are threads on The Good Place subreddit where people are taking guesses on who is playing The Judge. One person guessed Bill Murray and said something like "He would probably do a one off". The person who made that comment ignored the fact that in Jameela Jamil's interview she said that the person is joining the cast. It has to be someone who is either returning to TV or a movie actor or actress who is dipping their feet into the TV world.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | January 20, 2018 2:21 AM |
There are only two more episodes left in this season, so they could make the penultimate episode a "filler" (i.e., what happens when Eleanor and company are spit out at other end of the portal, and then go looking for the judge), and then reveal the judge at the very end of the *next* episode/season finale.
The season-one finale ended with a huge twist, so my guess is that they may do the same in season two. End with a bang and leave people clamouring for more.

I was kind of glad they didn't drag out the judge reveal until the very end of the season finale. In a previous episode, I got the feeling that Michael had previously interacted with the judge on another case. He seemed quite nervous when the humans asked. it will be good to see Michael help make a case for the humans.

Ted Danson deserves an Emmy nomination. I think he'll end up getting snubbed. Emmy voters in the past year or two seem to favor broadcast sitcoms like Blackish and Modern Family. Ted probably deserves an Emmy nod more than Anthony Anderson does.
D'Arcy Carden deserves Emmy love. But, Emmy voters will probably give that god awful Leslie Jones from SNL another Emmy nomination.

R117 I don't think it will last because one of them will screw up.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | February 2, 2018 11:49 AM |
Agree with R116 and R117 -- that was disappointing, and Eleanor back in her old life with her old friends was boring. It was a largely Chidi/Jason/Tahani/Janet/Micheal-free episode, and didn't work. The show is great because of the ensemble, so cutting most of them out of the finale was a mistake.
If the writers had decided this season's big finale twist would be sending everyone back to their lives, that should have been the very last shot (i.e., Eleanor "waking up" in the parking lot... cut to closing title card). That way, the creative team could have spent the next eight months crafting a much stronger "back to reality" concept/storyline.
Seeing what each of their respective Middle Places might have been like, and having each one languish there for a couple of episodes, would have been a better choice, IMO. Or having them all actually make it to the Good Place with some kind of catch/condition.
I don't want to see these characters on Earth, bound by the conventions of the real world. I want to see them in the weird, bizarre, fantastical Good/Bad/Middle Places, with people like Mindy St. Clair and Sean and Trevor and Derek.

[quote]that was disappointing, and Eleanor back in her old life with her old friends was boring. It was a largely Chidi/Jason/Tahani/Janet/Miche - al-free episode, and didn't work. The show is great because of the ensemble, so cutting most of them out of the finale was a mistake.
I missed the other characters in the finale. I thought it was dumb for Janet to be with Michael tracking the humans on those ticker things.

I didn't get why Janet would need to be tracking them on old fashioned tickers. She's a robot with all the knowledge of the world. I'm wondering if they somehow stripped her of her powers and in a sense is being punished along with Michael and they have to track the four through that methold.

Not a robot

Love the show.
Didn't like the finale. Too much about Eleanor, and nothing surprising there. It's like whichever writer was suppose to take charge of this episode finked out and they only had a couple of hours to put together a quick half hour. And kinda failed.

Seeing Michael behind the bar was a nice little nod to Cheers I thought

I think next season there will be a Jason and Tahani centered episode. But, it will be interesting if ever pair back Jason with Janet as he would have no memories of Janet. I predict that somehow Janet and Michael will be turned into humans.

Shelley Long should guest star as a demon next season.

Oh, I really hope you're wrong. Can you imagine how dull it would be to have a Janet WITHOUT all her cool abilities?
As for Michael behind the bar, that wasn't the Michael we've grown to know and love -- riddled with anxiety and completely confused by human emotions/ethics/etc. The writers dropped the ball and suddenly turned him into this sage, insightful source of counsel, which wasn't true to the character. So I fear how uninteresting it would be having him be human ALL the time.

I liked the finale even it mostly focused on Eleanor. Next season, they will probably have episodes focused on the other characters. I do wonder if they Janet will visit Earth like Michael has.

Assuming it is earth.

I think they are on some kind of earth simulation.

I just wanted to take a moment to appreciate how r105's post accurately predicted that there'd be some kind of fake out with the identity of the judge, but instead of mistaking a woman for a man, they mistook a burrito for Maya Rudolph. Because this show is forking bananas.
I didn't really care for the finale but I have hope that it'll be better once we have a third season for context.

I like that they went with someone like Maya Rudolph as the judge. She's not an unknown, but not extremely well known. Tons of people on reddit kept hoping for Amy Poehler as the judge. I don't think she would have played a good judge character.

Janet and Trevor need their own spin-off!

I bet the demon Vicky will pop up on earth this season. Does Janet automatically become human on earth?

Of course, now the dilemma is: to continue using THIS thread or THAT one?

Loved the midseason finale and D'Arcy Carden deserves an Emmy nomination.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | December 7, 2018 1:35 AM |
Last night's episode was definitely geared towards earning Carden a (very well-deserved!) Emmy nod. I mean, she had 90% of the screen time!
It was great, and she was fabulous. I especially enjoyed her JasonJanet.

Sadly, I can see D'Arcy Carden being snubbed again once Emmy nomination voting rolls around.

It's been renewed for another season.

D'Arcy Carden was great playing the other four characters...I especially loved her as Jason! And the scene where sheās Eleanor pretending to be Jason š!
I hope she gets some more recognition after this latest episode. Love her in āBarryā too.
