When she was 15, she watched her mother kill her abusive alcoholic father. She probably thought Penn was not abnormal after she grew up in that environment.

There's just something unlikable about her and I think the public has picked up on that. I think that is why she has never been a big movie star because of the likability factor (or in her case, lack of one).

I do know that Sean Penn has a nasty temper and has been known to abuse women and has beaten up at least a couple of photographers. Maybe she has seriously low self-esteem? I have a friend who works in a shop near the Hollywood area and he told me that when Charlize was dating Sean Penn they would frequently show up very late at night (close to midnight) with Charlize's son with them to do shopping (he didn't tell me what they would buy).

Not only was my friend surprised to see such a young child there so late at night so frequently (this of course would be after a normal bedtime for a kid) but he also said that the boy *never* (his word) had shoes on and Charlize would let him run around on the dirty floors while barefoot, looking completely unconcerned.

This shop is not in a very nice area and has a lot of random (sometimes sketchy) people come in off the street and it doesn't pretend to be an upscale store, so my friend was suprised that Charlize would let her son run around barefoot on the floors every single time and that she would bring him in so late at night.

Did your friends grow up on isolated Afrikanner dirt farms? Anyway, she's not a native English speaker, yet has become completely fluent and barely has an accent in real life. In film roles, she's able to assume a completely convincing American accent, which takes more skill than a lot of American actors of her age possess. Most of them can't do accents at all.

She fascinates me, acting has become a field for rich kids and the beneficiaries of nepotism, and she's about the only person in modern Hollywood who really has clawed her way up from the low end of society to the top of the heap. I admire her ability to master the skill of acting, and believe me she learned it in stages and wasn't very good when she started out, but that's a very different thing that admiring someone for being a good human being.

Fight scenes in Atomic Blonde are great. The rest of it is sluggish and boring. I might be one of the few people who doesn't find her performance in Monster to be anything more than shake and makeup acting. Her performance in Young Adult, on the other hand, is excellent.

She was indeed excellent/brilliant in "Young Adult", [R144]--a very underrated film with an equally underrated screenplay.

It's a very fresh and original film (including that ending) and Charlize's performance is flawless.

I honestly wouldn't have minded if she had received an Oscar for *that*. She did a phenomenal job that I don't think any of her contemporaries could have equalled in that role.

I don't like her, but I can totally appreciate her talent and skill in YA and appreciate what a well done film it was as well.

She said Clooney invited the staff to a strip club (females) and was really funny and charming. She said of all the celebs she waited on, only Charlize was a cunt. I attended a screening of Young Adult where she took part in a Q & A afterwards. I didn't really know much about her as I don't follow actors so I didn't have much of an opinion about her.

The first thing that struck me about her was the way she walked- very poised and graceful. And then when she sat down, initially, she was facing the interviewer, but then soon after, she turned her chair so that she was facing the audience head on, and stayed in that position for the rest of the Q&A. She came across as (over?) confident and obviously likes to play to a large crowd. She was engaging and charismatic, but I sensed that this was someone who was largely unseasoned with the condiment of humility and probably not the type of person to let her guard down easily; impenetrable.

She is good looking in real life, but as a few others have said here, it's a rather bland type of beauty. There's nothing about her features that is particularly striking. I often think that looks-wise, she's similar to the young Doris Day. But whereas Day had a down to earth quality, Theron acts like she's far more beautiful than she actually is which I think has been successful in convincing many people that she's 'stunning'.

I wanted to say I posted earlier about her mother/father drama but when I searched for (supposed) actual transcripts of the police report, it's worse than I though:. Charlize and her mother went to the father's relative's house because they were locked out of their house and needed the keys. The father and brother were at the relative's house drinking and the father was wasted. Charlize stayed in the car while her mother went to get the set of keys.

When they returned home the mother locked all of the doors. The father then called their house and asked why Charlize did not say hello to him when she saw him at his relative's house. He got pissed, swore at her and hung up. He and his brother then drove to their home, he got in and started shooting. He shot through Charlize's locked bedroom door and the bullet supposedly went through her bedroom window. The mother ran and got her gun and shot the shit out of him.

When the brother came running in the mother freaked and shot him in the hand. When Charlize came out of her bedroom she saw the scene and started screaming. The worst part was the paternal grandmother's statement (who didn't witness the actual crime) saying if Charlize had been nice to her father this never would have happened. Can you imagine guilting and blaming a teenager for her father's erratic drunken behavior and inevitable murder?
