There have been quite a few threads on her lately

[quote][R12] I adore everyone's hair and costume in that movie. I may buy a copy for my birthday.
There's apparently a new DVD with a zillion extras.
I bought the 2006 one and it's also got a zillion (terrific) extras and therefore worth every penny. Could't get the newest one where I live.
A lot of DVD extras are disappointing and thin - NOT the case here. They're fantastic.

Sexy in Valley Of The Dolls.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||01/21/2017|
I know it's cumbersome and impractical but i wish this big hair style would come back. It looked so fun on celebrities and in movies.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||01/21/2017|
Patty Duke was all pumped up to become a big film star with the release of "Valley Of The Dolls" and possibly even being elevated to Patricia Duke. Dolls was a mess and it shattered forever her ambition to become a bonafide big name actress. But she still worked consistently in television and did some good work.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||01/21/2017|
She was an absolute doll.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||01/21/2017|
[quote] Dolls was a mess and it shattered forever her ambition to become a bonafide big name actress.
One bad film and she was never able to do a big movie again?
& in spite of proving herself in TV films straight away?

The 1960's was such an amazing decade for fashion, such rapid change and timeless trends. I may need to binge watch Mad Men tonight.

Yes, if you're an airhead.
If you love that period and very 60s looking gurls check out Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice.

Since there is no February 29 today / tomorrow would be 11 months that she passed away 😔
|by Anonymous||reply 51||02/28/2017|
You know, it's funny. When I was about, I don't know, 7 years old I first became aware of Patty Duke. I remember her hosting the New York portion of the MDA Telethon with John Astin for several years running. Something attracted me to her. There was a warmth, a tone of voice, a look. I can't even put my finger on it. Soon after I remember loving when I would see her on Match Game, or Tattletales, and I remember being home sick from school one day and being enthralled by her in The Swarm, and later as Anne Sullivan in the TV remake of Miracle Worker (still haven't seen the original)..
When I saw the out sized outpouring here when she died it made sense to me. We all felt that attraction. I felt it years and years before I ever saw Valley of the Dolls, which I didn't see till I was in the 20s. Maybe it was we knew instinctively she was a survivor from those horrible managers who abused her, and we related.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||02/28/2017|
R52 thank you from all the Patty Duke fans, beautifully written.

It was so nice to see the Academy pay tribute to Patty Duke during the In Memoriam segment. I mean, rightfully so--they should have acknowledged her especially as a former Oscar winner. I was just pleased that they didn't overlook her since she died last March, and sometimes people get left out. But there she was, the unforgettable Patty Duke.

We remember people who died, and then life has a strange way of moving on and the person is forgotten. Patty Duke isn't one of them. She is one who will long be remembered and missed. There wasn't anybody like Patty Duke. Great actress. Big loss.
Joan Rivers was another who made her mark and hasn't been forgotten. Same with Judy Garland, who lives on too and can't be replaced--even more so than Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis and Frank Sinatra.
|by Anonymous||reply 74||04/07/2017|
Duke might not have had the film career that might have been expected of her, she managed to win Emmys for her work in MY SWEET CHARLIE, as Anne Sullivan in the MIRACLE WORKER, for THE WOMEN'S ROOM and my favorite as Bernadette in CAPTAINS & THE KINGS.
As for VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, Duke made her peace with Neely O'Hara. On location shoots for television movies, she would invite the entire cast and crew in to watch VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and would answer everyone's questions. She even paid for the pizza.
I will admit that I would like to have seen Duke play Neely when she (Duke) was physically and mentally healthy
|by Anonymous||reply 75||04/07/2017|
Sally Field swept in and took over Patty Duke's movie career. Think about it. I'm not saying Sally wasn't great, but you could easily imagine Patty in almost all of Field's film roles, including Norma Rae and Steel Magnolias. I bet Duke would have been just as good. Just a different interpretation.
|by Anonymous||reply 76||04/07/2017|
Correction: I should have written "just as great!"
I love both of them.
|by Anonymous||reply 77||04/07/2017|
Patty Duke should have played the role of Violet, the mother in August: Osage County. Patty would have been perfect in the role, and would have been much more suited than Meryl Streep. Yes, Meryl is a great actress, but the role of Violet was not for her. It belonged to Patty, who certainly could have played the role on Broadway.

I like how she was depicted on Feud. I wonder if she really brought her dog to the ceremony? And they said she won it at age 17, but I thought she was younger when she won the Oscar.
|by Anonymous||reply 82||04/09/2017|
R82 she was 16 not 17. And no she did not carry the dog around in a purse. But, the dog did go to the Oscars with her managers.

My favorite tv performance of hers was Always Remember I Love You opposite Joan Van Ark.
|by Anonymous||reply 87||04/10/2017|
The dog was her manager's, Patty hated that dog and she was actually furious because her managers wouldn't let her mother come to the Oscars but they brought the dog.

Patty was one of the best. Most times, you move on and celebrity icons become great memories. But there are a few for me who I really miss. Patty is one of them. Joan Rivers is another. And Princess Diana remains the one I think I'll always miss.

That just proves the point, R133:
It's on some obscure channel only recently and only watched by the elderly shut-ins...
Where was it back in the 80s when sitcoms of that era dominated daytime tv and even late night?
It was nowhere to be found because nobody was interested.

|by Anonymous||reply 190||11/02/2017|
Both deaths were all over the media, esp Mary Tyler Moore's.

I cannot believe that in 4 days Patty Duke will be dead 20 months. How sad is that 😞

Patty missed another Thanksgiving. Great ol' gal.

I think you're probably a depressing person.
I don't want to keep being reminded - but you keep bumping this thread.
|by Anonymous||reply 195||11/25/2017|
R195 you are right, I can't get over her passing 😞
|by Anonymous||reply 196||11/25/2017|
The last time I saw Patty was when CNN dragged her out to talk about Robin Williams suicide. She looked like she was in her early eighties.
|by Anonymous||reply 197||11/25/2017|
R197 she was already starting to get sick
|by Anonymous||reply 198||11/25/2017|
What's to miss? Was she ever in anything good besides The Miracle Worker? And I don't even like that one. It's one of the Oscar winners (her and Bancroft) that just isn't any fun to watch.
|by Anonymous||reply 199||11/26/2017|
She only did TV movies after VOTD.
|by Anonymous||reply 200||11/26/2017|
R199 did you ever hear of a movie called Valley of the Dolls? R200 what's wrong with TV movies?
|by Anonymous||reply 201||11/26/2017|
Her best work was the Patty Duke show. There really did seem to be two different actresses playing Patty and Cathy.
|by Anonymous||reply 202||11/26/2017|
This cunt again?
|by Anonymous||reply 203||11/26/2017|
[quote] [R200] what's wrong with TV movies?
It meant she had little fame outside the USA, for one.

Wow today is 20 months since Anna Patty Duke Falk Tell Astin Pearce passed away 😔
|by Anonymous||reply 205||11/29/2017|
How did sean astin turn out so fug? Patty was a babe in her youth.
|by Anonymous||reply 206||11/29/2017|
R206 when he isn't fat, he is also a babe 😁
|by Anonymous||reply 207||11/29/2017|

|by Anonymous||reply 212||12/14/2017|
Just watched Patty Duke in the movie, Me, Natalie , what a great, moving performance. I cannot believe that the Oscars did not nominate her, though she did win a Golden Globe award for that performance.
|by Anonymous||reply 213||01/06/2018|
This cunt again?
|by Anonymous||reply 214||01/06/2018|
So what happened to her? I know, sepsis, but could it have been avoided?
|by Anonymous||reply 215||01/06/2018|
I've wondered the same. There must have been something chronic that weakened her.
|by Anonymous||reply 216||01/06/2018|
R215 and R216 it was sepsis that resulted from a burst intestine. She had been sick with stomach problems for about a year. I don't think it was cancer, because I think they would have said so. But, I believe that she did not get the best care. Maybe if she was still living in LA, things would have been different, no offense to North Idaho doctors.
|by Anonymous||reply 217||01/06/2018|
Patty should have played Violet, the mother, in August: Osage County. She would have been perfect instead of Meryl.
|by Anonymous||reply 218||01/06/2018|
R218 totally agree.
|by Anonymous||reply 219||01/07/2018|
Why didn't she stop George Clooney from molesting her son?
|by Anonymous||reply 220||01/07/2018|

|by Anonymous||reply 222||01/07/2018|
Patty Duke deserved a Golden Globe posthumously. Just because.
|by Anonymous||reply 223||01/07/2018|
R223 well since the SAG Awards are on next week and even though she was given a mentioned in the memoriam section last year, I still think that the SAG Awards should have an award named after her. This award could be given to an actor or actress who has contributed to the Mental Health Community.
|by Anonymous||reply 224||01/08/2018|
Aren’t you precious...

From the old SUMMER STOCK MEMORIES thread in the archives:
************************** I sometimes acted as a baby sitter. For adults and for children. When John Astin and Patty Duke Astin travelled around with their production of MY FAT FRIEND, they brought their combined families with them, five kids plus a nanny. It was difficult find a place to take them out to eat. They both were very popular from their TV and movie careers, and they insisted on bring the kids with them, so the restaurant had to appeal to the kids’ tastes as well. In the town of Bourne, there was very nice casual restaurant located near a local yacht club. It was the kind of place where you sailed in from Nantucket, had lunch with your other sailing buddies, and then headed out for an afternoon trip to Martha’s Vineyard. I had reserved a table for the family, and when we arrived, despite my request fro a quiet corner, they had placed us in the center of the room.
Mr. Astin sat at the head of the table. Patty sat in the middle of one side of the table, next to her two smallest children (Sean and Mackenzie) and the nanny. I sat on the other side of the table, with the older kids. I had forgotten how demanding and loud kids could be, and the Astin family was no exception. They were a handful. Of course, other patrons began to notice John Astin (he’s very recognizable) and I could hear the whispers and see the heads turn. Now Patty was another matter. She was very tiny, and without makeup looked very young, and she was hidden among the kids.
I was annoyed when some guy came over during the middle of the meal, and introduced himself to Mr. Astin. He blustered about how his family loved them, and commented on how nice it was to see the Astins out as a family having their lunch. Mr. Astin smile amicably and said nothing. Then the guy said “I’m really disappointed that your wife’s not here. We loved her in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and in THE MIRACLE WORKER.”
Patty was sitting right across from me, her head down, and all the kids participated in this charade with glee. Mr. Astin said “Thank you very much. I’ll be sure to pass on your kind compliments to her.” He the turned to Patty and said “Anna, eat your vegetables!” We all burst out laughing.

February 14 a new book about Patty Duke and her life and career will be out.
|by Anonymous||reply 242||02/08/2018|
Patty Duke is in this week's Closer magazine.
|by Anonymous||reply 243||02/09/2018|
The new Patty Duke book is out. It's a good read but it's not juicy. But I would still recommend it because she does give her opinion and thoughts on many famous people.

|by Anonymous||reply 254||03/08/2018|
Wow next week it will be 2 years that Patty Duke passed away 😔
|by Anonymous||reply 255||03/20/2018|

|by Anonymous||reply 265||04/03/2018|
i am currently reading this book. she has some great stories....
she really let Barbra Parkins have it because BP wanted the Neely O Hara role in the movie.....sounds like Patty did not care much for Miss Parkins much....did you know she is only 5' 4"?
|by Anonymous||reply 266||04/03/2018|
I liked the book but it needs to be juicer. I heard an interview with her co-worker who said there were other people he wanted her to talk about, but she didn't want to do that kind of book. 😔
|by Anonymous||reply 267||04/05/2018|
R267, My copy arrived today. My God, is there anyone she doesn't write about? In the chapter on Liza, I was hoping Patty would have mentioned if they ever compared notes on Desi, Jr. and his big, fat Cuban cock.
|by Anonymous||reply 268||04/06/2018|
R268 that's the problem she doesn't talk about any real gossip.
|by Anonymous||reply 269||04/06/2018|
I had it worse.
Hell, even my living room rug had it worse than her.

How many times do I watch a TV show and say Patty Duke could have played that part. Still very sad from her passing.
|by Anonymous||reply 273||05/05/2018|
Is Cathy still with us? She seems to have dropped off the face of the Earth.
|by Anonymous||reply 274||05/05/2018|
Ya'll seem to think VOTD was the only movie I did after winning an Oscar.
|by Anonymous||reply 275||05/05/2018|

She did it ALL!

I recently visited my local Social Security office, with some elderly relatives, and I was surprised to see they still had Patty's Social Security ads up in multiple places.

R286 and don't forget 3 Emmy Awards two or maybe three Golden Globe Awards and numerous numerous nominations 😀
|by Anonymous||reply 288||06/18/2018|
Patty should have payed Violet, the mother, in "August: Osage County." She would have been perfect. It would have been a Tony-winning triumphant return to Broadway, and she would have won the Oscar for the movie.

|by Anonymous||reply 300||09/01/2018|
I love this thread actually, despite it being slightly over the top (like Neely O'Hara)
Patty was a good egg. Charming and refreshingly honest. The world is worse off without her-
I love remembering her.
|by Anonymous||reply 301||09/01/2018|
She was indirectly responsible for Sharon Tate s death. Sharon and Roman Polanski were renting Patty s house. Patty Duke was splitting from her husband. She needed to sell the house for the community property settlement. Sharon wanted to buy it but Roman Polanski and Patty s ex husband couldnt come to terms on price. Roman was at that particular moment cash poor, which impacted the negotiations ,So Sharon had to vacate and find something fast, especially as just at that time she discovered that she was pregnant. They moved about 6 blocks away to cielo drive and the rest is as they say history.
|by Anonymous||reply 302||09/01/2018|
R302 read Patty Duke new book, in the presence of greatness, and you will see what she says about Sharon Tate and buying her house.
|by Anonymous||reply 303||09/01/2018|
Very sorry to hear about the death of Burt Reynolds. Not sure if many of you know, but Burt Reynolds did a guest appearance on Patty Duke's short-lived TV show, Amazing Grace
|by Anonymous||reply 304||09/06/2018|
|by Anonymous||reply 305||09/13/2018|
No more love for the late Patty Duke
|by Anonymous||reply 306||09/20/2018|
A timely bump. I spent the weekend in Palm Springs where I got chatting to the bartender about the history of the bar/celebrities who frequented. Long story short he had me and my boyfriend howling with laughter as he described the decades long feud between Patti Duke and Suzanne Pleshette. Well, it was more that Suzanne held a hell of a grudge really. But this guy acted it all out doing voices and everything. Hysterical.
|by Anonymous||reply 307||09/20/2018|
She was great in the "Miracle Worker"... and I enjoyed her TV show (not shown anymore on anttv.. ugh). I watched a little known movie, "Me, Natalie", filmed in the late 60s. It was a good little film, and she was very good in it. You can watch it on Youtube. She passed too young. I was shocked when her death was announced.
|by Anonymous||reply 308||09/21/2018|
What was she doing with that hot dog - you know, the one that made her lose control?
|by Anonymous||reply 309||09/21/2018|
R307 it was more like a one-sided Feud since Patty Duke really didn't even know that Suzanne Pleshette hated her that much and continue to hate her. Care to share any of the story that he told?
|by Anonymous||reply 310||09/21/2018|
R308 Me, Natalie is one of the best movies, how it did not turn into a movie that everybody knows about, I'll never know
|by Anonymous||reply 311||09/21/2018|
I saw an interview with Suzanne Pleshette (you can find it on YouTube) in which she talks about the terrible time she had replacing Anne Bancroft during the Broadway run of "The Miracle Worker" while Patty was still in the show. She says Patty took an instant dislike to her (because she wasn't Anne Bancroft) and made their scenes together, especially the fight scenes, very difficult and literally painful for Suzanne. Fairly or unfairly, she makes Patty sound pretty awful in the interview.
|by Anonymous||reply 312||09/21/2018|
R302, Sounds like Harry Falk, Jr. was more complicit in Sharon's death than Patty.
|by Anonymous||reply 313||09/21/2018|
R313 that is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read. Who knew that not coming to an agreement would lead to her death? Neither Patty or Harry have anything to do with her death.
|by Anonymous||reply 314||09/22/2018|
R312 I know that interview, Patty was 13 or 14 and Bancroft was like a second mother to her. Patty was definitely at first not a fan of Suzanne Pleshette, though I think later things settle down. But Suzanne to keep that alive all lthose years later, seems a little strange.
|by Anonymous||reply 315||09/22/2018|
Today marks 2 years and 6 months that Patty Duke passed away 😢 I for one will never forget her💔
|by Anonymous||reply 316||09/29/2018|
|by Anonymous||reply 317||10/08/2018|
I've heard that interview as well. I'd say it was less a grudge than an actress really enjoying dining out on an old tale of her being a victim, deservedly so probably, and letting everyone know how hard she had to work with a bratty kid actor! Face it, it's a great story, and I'm sure Suzanne enjoyed telling it!
|by Anonymous||reply 318||10/08/2018|
R318 make that an exceptionally talented amazing 'bratty kid' and you have it right LOL
|by Anonymous||reply 319||10/10/2018|
Bavery, resilience, compassion and love. Oh yeah, she had some pretty decent acting chops too, but the other stuff is more important.

Lauren Bacall, Bea Arthur and Elaine Stritch sounded like Julie Andrews, Sally Anne Howes and Florence Henderson singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" compared to her screeching "Could I Leave You?" The only really interesting thing about this Sunday matinee was seeing all the people that I knew from West Hollywood there and turning to my friend and saying, "Wow, I bet the Abbey is empty!"

I always read the Cathy Lane character to be a lesbian (maybe hoped is the better word). I googled to see if anyone else thought the same and found this little Outsmart article! Evidently, she liked the Cathy character better and agreed that Cathy could have indeed been a lesbian. ; )

I recently read her last book. She certainly worked with a lot of actors and actresses.
