Let's not forget, Patty Duke also died this year, age 69
I didn't grow up with knowledge of her (she wasn't famous in England). But I've been making up for lost time.
What I've found astounding (maybe too strong a word) is how universally loved she was. Yes, especially by the gays (whose love she returned) but everyone. Look at any video etc.. & people just can't stop saying nice things about her.

This is especially heart warming. You have to watch the whole thing. Very touching.

OP, I was surprised by the devotion DL showed her over a number of threads the past few years.
Not that she didn't deserve it, but I was moved by the sheer depth of devotion DL showed her.
We have a kindhearted sense of fairness and decency, and take pride in rooting for our beloved underdogs here.

I hope the Golden Globes do a fitting tribute to the late great Patty Duke.

Funny, I just saw her in a creepy 1992 movie on TV.

R5 here, not only did they not do a fitting tribute to Patty Duke, they didn't do anything for Patty Duke. Or, any of the others who passed away in 2016, except for Debbie and Carrie.

Maybe if she'd died later in the year.
By the end of the year everyone had forgotten her 'passing'.

I don't think the Golden Globes usually do tributes to late celebrities anyway. Patty will appear in the Academy Awards in memoriam for sure as an Oscar winner, probably more prominent than most.

R11 Hopefully the SAG awards will too since she was their president.

[quote] and guest starred in pretty much every US TV import in the 1970s.
Absolute nonsense.
[quote]If she had been so irrelevant in the UK why would the newspapers have reported her death?
They're reporting to their American readers. Most of the responses are from Americans.
Here's one of the few British responses:-
[quote]This is a British newspaper : I have never even heard of this lady and I wonder what she is doing in this uniquely British institution - I will move back to the Anglo Saxon columns as soon as I have expunged this yankism from my crystal clear British memory
[quote]To the rest of the UK she was pretty well known, ask your Mum or Grandma?
No she wasn't and you're too stupid and ill informed to get away with being so snarky.

Patty Duke had a UK fan base and The Miracle Worker about Helen Keller was on TV at least every year of my childhood (before mainstream TV stopped showing B & W films) - for which she was an Oscar winning actress (& Golden Globe etc) She guest starred on TV in: The Streets of San Francisco Hawaii Five O Police Woman (which starred Angie Dickinson - who I suppose you've never heard of either?)
She also won an Emmy for 'Captains & Kings' which I think was shown on ITV around 1977
Her TV movies were a regular fixture on UK TV into the 1980's when the broadcasters moved more into home produced content
Her death was also reported in The Daily Mirror (which pretty much has no international presence)
I wasn't being 'Snarky' - Honestly older people knew who she was and admired her work

And her TV movies were released onto VHS Tapes during the early days of video recorder ownership in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Well before the big Movie Studios would allow any release of mainstream films.
I remember when a 60 min blank VHS tape cost £25.00 which would be about £70.00 now and the cheapest movie you could buy was £79.99 (about £180.00 now)
I'm not being 'Snarky' - Just pretty old!

Sharon Tate died in '69 and Patty Duke died at 69. Is there a Valley of the Dolls curse??

Didn't Jacqueline Susann's Father Robert also die aged 69? You could be onto something?

One thing I find interesting about her is how DIFFERENT she looked over the years.
She went from young & pretty in Valley of The Dolls to frumpy frau very quickly.

R29 nothing special in the sense of an anniversary or birthday or anything like that. What it was, was that buzzer TV or the Game Show Network not sure which one, had like a mini Patty Duke Marathon on Match Game and tattletales.

I am having a hard time. I knew her from the 1980s and 1990s TV movies. Around 1992, the Patty Duke show came on Nick at Night, and like the previous generation who fell in love with her in the 1960s—I did also. She had a way of connecting with the audience in a real way. She truly was very good.

Boy, she was crazy. Bi-polar, just like Judy. Only Patty survived and got better, but Judy just kept getting worse and died before she was 50 years old. Patty was a survivor. Such a shame that ill health did her in at 69.
