It's going to get up to 122 degrees there tomorrow. Who wants to live in that? Are they all skinny, frail EGs who put on a sweater all summer because the A/C is too chilly?
Why do so many gays want to live in Palm Springs?

They enjoy the availability of sexual partners and medical facilities that provide topnotch treatments for HIV/AIDs and other STDs.

I've heard it's a great place to retire. I don't intend to gravitate toward the bar scene when I'm old, so I really don't care that the bars are kinda lame there. I've spent time there in the fall and in the spring, but I've never experienced any time there in the summer, so I'm a little concerned. But I do love a Mediterranean climate, so I think I would actually be fine with it.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 19, 2016 11:03 PM |
Why does anyone live in a gay cocoon? It's for guys who are shallow and have no interest in anyone or anything that isn't gay. If that means they have to live in hellish heat for half the year, so be it.

PS became popular with post-HIV treatment, internet bubble gays from SF. They could buy the kind of mid-century modern places that had gone out of favor in the 70s and 80s for relatively little money. The real money had moved to other towns nearby and PS drew spring breakers, weekending families and a lot of other non-showbiz, non money types. Basically, its like Ft Lauderdale, but with fewer coach surfing young guys living marginal lives.
It seems hot and unattractive to me, but I don't really care about winter and I prefer living someplace that has culture and isn't isolated and environmentally unsustainable.

In 2012, 13 and 14, I was there in March/April. I really like the place and put PS on my list of possible places to retire. In 2015 I was there in late June. PS is no longer on my list of possible places to retire. Powerfully hot and not a whole lot of activity anywhere.

I've found PS to be the place that the HIV+ crowd tends to migrate to after their diagnosis. It is like they feel as if they now belong to a kind of fraternity and PS is the frat house! They feel welcome down there due to the city's lower sexual standards - being that Hot Desert Knights (the POZ PORN company that produces markets legal, yet ethically dubious, SNUFF films) has their headquarters and production compounds located there. It is supposedly a rite of passage for a new POZZIE PS resident to be granted an invitation to either watch an HDK filming or get invited to one of their "anything goes into every hole" breeding and conversion parties. Frankly, I think the whole town is a bit "unwell", if you know what I mean... But in the end (no pun intended) - you make your bed, you burn in it...

The heat is unbelievable most of the year and, due to development, it is no longer exclusively dry heat. I've been there in May and in early fall. It's not cool, but most of the time it's in the 90s, and believe me, after suffering through Chicago summers, 10% humidity is still preferable. And before 9 and/or after 5, it's more temperate (when the sun is behind the mountain).
That being said, there's three and a half solid months a year where the temperature is at or above 100 for several hours a day, and at least 4 to 6 of those weeks where it's just fucking HOT 24/7, 110 or above.
I love it for a few reasons - scale (you can go from PS to Palm Desert pretty quickly), and the fact that you can get a pretty beautiful mid century modern house for what is, compared to other cities, an affordable price.
There are negatives. All of CA surprises me in terms of the amount of street and homeless people, and how often people seem not to care. Also, the aesthetics are pretty awful. Men's clothing stores there are all Who Shot The Tablecloth and Turned It Into This Shirt?
I'm considering it for retirement, but I'd definitely have to live in a relatively inexpensive place for 4 months or so of the year. Since I'm from the Rust Belt I think I might be able to swing both.

So we'll probably take that opportunity to rent a place for a month or so in somewhat less oppressively hot places, like Ptown or Tuscany, or Northern CA. I'm thinking it might be a bit too much to work ourselves to death in order to own two properties. And I say this as a 50-something with our mortgage paid off and comfortable savings. I'd rather experience a little variety in my old(er)-age.

I really don't understand the shrill cuntiness about this. I've been there 20+ times in the last 5 years and have never seen this.
Then again, I have never been there during Pride week or spent a second in the dive bars in town.
But "teeming with whores" seems to be a bit of a stretch.

To hear one of my exes talk, it has something to do with the Giant Pecan Caramel Cinnamon Rolls at Billy Reed's.
Is that place still gay central on Sunday morning?

It had a certain charm.

What is considered "reasonable" housing prices in PS ?
by Anonymous | reply 129 | June 29, 2016 10:26 PM |
I live there part time for the reason we're accepted. Anyone past 50 has had a hard life and it's truly liberating to know you're in a town with a Gay mayor and a Gay City Council. Sex is there but generally middle aged gays. For sure it's often hot but not like Florida hot.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | June 29, 2016 11:00 PM |
Easy hub for travel. Home prices run the gamut. PS, CC-Mission Hills $300k and up, Indian Wells about $800k and up, La Quinta gated $1.2mm and up. Specialty areas like Thunderbird Heights, the Madison, Vintage Club, Big Horn, Tradition, Andalusia are muli-million $ price. Lock and leave.

[R112] sweet sentiments you express but in PS it all boils down to one thing and one thing only; what is your VIRAL LOAD?
by Anonymous | reply 135 | June 30, 2016 1:22 AM |
I guess I'm in a circle of more classy, elegant people that aren't whores or barflies, then, since I would never think to think "viral load" when discussing Palm Springs.

Doesn't that make YOU the delicate snowflake, for not being able to deal with... er...snowflakes?

Because they get arthritis and can't rake the leaves or shovel the snow anymore. They can't repair the winter damage to the exterior of the house. Their reflexes aren't what they were and they're afraid to drive on icy roads, especially at night.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | July 5, 2016 3:06 AM |
The elderly gays in Palm Springs are very "elite" just ask them. They enjoy the company of the young white and Hispanic gays who have low-paying hospitality or gardening jobs. They also pay to have access to the clothing optional "resorts" where you can go polar bear hunting if that is your bag. Last time I was in PS, there was a hot guy getting fisted on the back patio of the leather bar whose name I can't recall, such is nightlife on a Saturday night in PS. If you are into 58 year old pathetic closet cases look up "Jay Spadafore", he broke my heart so I guess he deserves this.

FYI I live at the Hideway in La Quinta which is about 35 minutes from P S. I have a rattler by the pool who seems very agitated. It is very unnerving to see this. Living in the desert tries have its drawbacks. That is all.

As, R113 said, SoCal is a HUGE swath of land. Part of is desert (Palm Springs), part of is Mediterranean (LA). This is rather easy to compute, I'd think.

R2 I have friends who "retired" to Palm Springs in the Fall of 2014. They lasted barely over a year, citing similar problems. They'd previously owned two homes (each guy had one when they married a few years ago). They sold the one in the Hollywood Hills to buy the one in Palm Springs, but kept the one in South Bay as a rental. They soon found out that the vacations they used to take in Palm Springs didn't translate to living there full-time. As soon as they could, they ended the lease on their rental home and moved back to the coast. I don't think they lost any money selling the place in Palm Springs, but they didn't make any, and it turned out to be one big disappointing hassle.

Only about 30% of the total population in PS is gay. Out of that, I would say most seem to be older gay couples with a very large house. Guys in the 50 plus age group really dont get out much. The truth to all the AIDS jokes is that most of the guys that are sexually active there are coming from LA /West Hollywood looking to get away from it all only to realize they are with the same tired crowd they left behind.

Pool Parties are kind in PS. Since its warm at night, they fun can go into the evening. Most respectable gays have a big pool. All the gay hotels have a pool. That's how they deal with the heat.

I recently vacationed there and you can see the appeal. There are some good things about it. Many of the benefits of other areas of CA without the insanely high real estate prices. A very gay friendly city. A downtown that's fun and walkable. Certainly more liveable than other areas during the winter.
But it is very hot and dry in summer and with climate change that will only get worse. I'm not sure how anyone will be getting water in 20-25 years. And one of the nice things thus far is the scale and size of the area, where crowds are really limited to big events like Coachella, Pride and the film festival. But PS is on the edge of a huge construction boom, and in 5-10 years you'll have people bitching in the same way they bitch now about cities like Denver, Boise et al - "All the newbies have ruined my city!"
So, pluses and minuses.

It’s not fabulous, At all, you think LA is tired? It’s like LA 25 years ago with the crumbling Mediterranean facades all worn, the sad depressing stucco outdoor patio bars with obligatory fire pit, no one dresses well, everyone’s trying to be younger and not as starving as they really are. No thanks.
