Hidden Palms was fun.
Actually, I can't even remember the names of all the shows I got interested in that only lasted a season or less.
Time magazine said Pasadena was one of the 10 best shows on TV. Unfortunately 9/11 killed it and only four episodes were shown on Fox.
2000 Malibu Road was a hoot, with some inside winks to Valley if the Dolls.
Models, Inc was pretty well done. I had a crush on Brian Gaskill who hot written out half way through. James Wilder and Johnathon Schaech were hot then, too. Funny, I thought Carrie-Anne Moss was so miscast as a model and was shocked when she became famous through The Matrix.
Titans wasn't great but was funny with John Barrowman camping it up as a pussyhound and Casper Van Dien striking poses.
My So-Called Life goes without saying.

Phenom with Judith Light and William Devane playing a tennis coach to a girl prodigy. The theme song was even sung by Carly Simon! It was quite good and got great ratings (it was on ABC's Tuesday night lineup between Full House and Roseanne). I was surprised when it got cancelled.

The Lizzy Borden Chronicles. Such a fun campfest. Some people complained how unrealistic is was that she was killing people left and right, an average of two per episode, but always outwitted the law. r77, they ought to reboot/remake it. They could disregard the less successful episodes, and most of them, the better episodes had very strong material. It's ripe for the picking, it'd be hailed as the new great horror series. A handsome demon and his soul-endangered son. It'd be really tough to find as appealing and talented actors as Cole and Black though, a testament to their joint brilliance.

That reminded me of another show with breathtaking young Geena that fits this thread quite nicely. "Buffalo Bill" starring Dabney Coleman playing pretty much the same character as in 9 to 5 but as a Buffalo NY local Talk Show host, and Geena as his associate. Looking it up I see it was two seasons but with only 26 episodes, that's really one season equivalent.

[quote][R124], Torchwood had like 3 or 4 seasons.
He probably meant the US season. BTW, Torchwood is still not dead. According to Wikipedia Barrowman said last year that Torchwood will return as several BBC radio plays and might return to tv after that as well.

Isn't Captain Jack supposed to be ageless?
by Anonymous | reply 144 | February 7, 2016 9:12 PM |
r138, unfortunately, the watered-down American version deserved to flop. If they'd left it the superior British cult show, people would be still watching it and there might be a demand for a revival, like X-Files.

[quote]Isn't Captain Jack supposed to be ageless?
We saw Captain Jack in the very, very far future in a Doctor Who episode.
R145, I wouldn't say the US season was watered down. It was extremely dark. The problems came from the production having too many American actors. Their acting style was way too Hollywood for the Torchwood setting.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | February 7, 2016 10:04 PM |
Yes, bad recasting made it watered-down. Whatever the case, the UK version had it all over the lame American version.

Interesting. Someone create a thread on shows, movies canceled/bombed because of 9/11. I refuse to supply my credit info in fear of being tracked who I am.

Anyone remember "Eyes" with Tim Daly and Laura Leighton? It didn't even make a half season but I remember enjoying it.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | February 27, 2016 12:14 AM |
R148, it wasn't the casting. The first half of the season was great. Then the plot became too convoluted.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | February 27, 2016 4:22 AM |
If "Transparent" had been cancelled after the first season, it would have been one of the best one season wonders ever.
But they made that bizarre second season with all the German storyline and dominatrix lesbian sex, and it turned into a huge WTF.

I actually watched a few episodes of that show on YouTube. It's pretty bad, and not in a so-bad-it's-actually-secretly-brilliant way like [italic]Small Wonder[/italic], but Tom Villard and Matt McCoy were hot; they and Bonnie Urseth, of course, both ended up doing [italic]Golden Girls[/italic] guest shots separately. Tom could have had a great career if he hadn't died of AIDS, and his character is the only one who's actually funny. The opening credits sequence alone is a masterpiece of coke-and-cheese-fueled 1980s excess.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | February 27, 2016 5:17 AM |
R156, are you the other guy who knew Tom Villard?
by Anonymous | reply 157 | February 27, 2016 5:18 AM |
R157: Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of meeting him. I was born the year that show premiered, so I was about 11 when he died. It's an interesting coincidence that he had a small part in [italic]My Girl[/italic] and did his second GG appearance around Matt McCoy was getting to take his shirt off and his pants off in separate scenes in [italic]The Hand That Rocks Cradle[/italic]. That movie and [italic]To Die For[/italic] also make me think the female leads used Tom Cruise as research for their respective roles, but that's for another thread.
WEHT Bonnie Urseth?

How lovely someone your age remembers him, R158. We were roommates when I first moved to NY.

Didn't "We Got It Made" get at least a second season in syndication? Maybe only Teri Copley returned but I swear it was resurrected after its initial network run.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | February 27, 2016 5:45 AM |
It got brought back for syndication three years after NBC ditched it. The girlfriends were gone—Stepfanie Kramer was already committed to [italic]Hunter[/italic]—but Copley, McCoy and Villard came back. There's practically no evidence of it online. I wonder how many stations actually carried it. So it doesn't technically qualify for this thread.
R159, how long were you guys roommates?

Significant Others. It an improvised sit-com a few years before all the rest. It ran on Bravo and was released on DVD. Genuinely funny with an amazing cast--who for some reason never went on to anything notable.
It is about a group of couples in couples counseling. Well defined characters who were not TV cliches.

HIGH SOCIETY, with Jean Smart, Mary McDonnel, and DL Broadway thread fave, Faith Prince. It was CBS's attempt at an AB FAB-ish comedy. The cast, primarily Smart, gave it their all and although it did provide a few laughs, the writing just wasn't great.
And don't get me started about the annoying gay Latino personal assistant!

Someone should create a network or a programming service (like MeTV, Antenna, Decades, et. al.) that could show all of the short-lived series and failed pilots from the last 40 years. Lots of what would be essentially "original" programming, and it could be marketed to let people know they can see stars in unfamiliar roles (or today's stars before they became famous.)

I think there was a one-off that Carl Reiner made where he played Rob Petrie in what became the Dick Van Dyke show. I don't recall if MTM was in it.
What was sad was that DVD was Carl's story, but he was all wrong to play himself. We got Alan Brady, though, so that was something.

The old Trio network used to have a campaign called "Brilliant But Cancelled" and showed a lot of these short lived shows.
For some reason, I thought MEN IN TREES ran for more than 1.5 seasons. I miss that show. I think having Anne Heche as the lead kept some people away. I thought she was great, but whenever I tried to tell people they should watch it, the reaction was always, "Ugh, I hate Anne Heche!!"

I would certainly have watched "The Maureen McCormack Show"--especially if it had been based on her real life!
"On tonight's episode, yet another Gen X Hollywood producer who crushed on Maureen in high school when she was on 'The Brady Bunch' wants to fuck her. Will she be able to land a decent role if she does--or will he just pay her yet again in blow? Guest starring Ann B. Davis as Herself."
