Oh it's still around but until the 80s you still saw ads on TV for it. You could see it in vending machines and all over, it was a distant but respectable third. Even super mooch Mike Stivic, of All In the Families like it. AITF had an episode about the cola wars.
What Happened To RC Cola?

Had some last night. Got a free liter w/pizza. Still tastes like shit (Pepsi). Coca-Cola is the only cola to drink, since it actually has a bouquet of flavors.
So it's still out there.

My grandmother loved it. I'm nearing 60. That's not a good demographic. But OP has me desiring it now.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 28, 2015 7:26 PM |
RC is a Carolina cola? Or Texas?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 28, 2015 7:37 PM |
It's prominently displayed in a bodega window next to my train station. Pretty sure they sell just drugs.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 28, 2015 7:39 PM |
I remember that AITF episode. Gloria blindfolded Mike to see if he could tell the difference between RC and Coke. It's really easy though because RC tastes like liquid ass.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 28, 2015 7:41 PM |
RC is great. It's second to Coca-Cola but miles ahead of Pepsie.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 28, 2015 7:57 PM |
I prefer it, but can't find it in New England.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 28, 2015 7:58 PM |
I live in Fl and I haven't seen RC in over 30 years. I would buy one just for the nostalgia of t if I were to see it in Publix.

This shit was never good.

I believe it was a Chicago based beverage, Royal Crown Cola, owned by the Crown Family. They also manufactured Diet Rite Cola. The Crown family owned General Dynamics, Material Service Co., and had very deep pockets, but I don't know if they family eventually sold off RC and related brands.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 2, 2020 12:54 AM |
[quote]Oh, and look at this. We can't even pay our bills and they're drinking royal crown cola!
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 2, 2020 12:56 AM |
In the south as a child of the 50s/60s we either drank Coca Cola with a bag of salted peanuts poured into the bottle or an RC Cola and a Moon Pie. RC Colas were in much larger bottles than Coca Cola. And of course, in Atlanta drinking a Pepsi would get you slapped repeatedly about the head and shoulders.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 2, 2020 12:56 AM |
I rarely drink sugared colas, but when I do, I do not care whether it is Coke, Pepsi, or RC. They all taste different to me, of course, but I have no preference among them. Whatever is on sale?
Diet colas, OTOH, vary widely in taste. Diet Rite is total shit, and it does not contain caffeine.

Sorry, I don't know her.

Whenever I think of RC Cola, I'm reminded of this Simpsons line where Homer is talking about celebrities

"Cola Payola" 60 minutes did a segment, at least 20 years ago, on how Pepsi & Coke combined forces to try and drive RC out of business. They paid Supermarkets, grocery stores etc to provide the most visible, ideal space for their products and RC Cola was relegated to the worst shelf space, being almost hidden. It was a quid-pro-quo and RC Cola was left reeling.
It almost worked.

Please welcome to the stage: COLA PAYOLA

As bottlers consolidated and other drink companies consolidated, they got stuck with marginal bottlers and this led to problems, in addition to the buying of space by Pepsi & Coke. I used to like Diet Rite, but found that it was very inconsistent---in LA it tasted like barely flavored water. They started in the South. Nothing to do with the Crown family. The company was an innovator---first with aluminum cans, first diet cola, first caffeine free, but it gave them only temporary advantages over the larger colas. They seem to have uneven distribution and are difficult to find in convenience stores. It can be easier to find oddities like Vernor's ginger ale than RC.

We have a vending machine at work that sells oddities like RC Cola, Nehi, and A&W root beer. I thought they stopped making Nehi soda 50 years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 2, 2020 3:54 AM |
Apparently it still has a large presence in Chicago, as well as across the South, and is a top selling cola in the Philippians and Iceland.
For me my cola preferences go, Coca Cola, Cheerwine, RC. Pepsi doesn't even rank, it tastes like shit!

For some reason I still remember this RC Cola ad — starring Nancy Sinatra!—from all the way back in 1968.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 2, 2020 4:42 AM |
I'm old enough to remember being able to buy bottles out of coolers like this.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 2, 2020 4:55 AM |
RC cola is still very easy to get in Chicago. Big grocery store chains (Mariano's for example) carry RC as does Target.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 2, 2020 6:35 AM |
RC is the racist cola. Pepsi is for gays and Coke is for normals.
Moxie is for weirdos.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 2, 2020 6:38 AM |
Cheerwine is swill
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 2, 2020 7:49 AM |
I thought Faygo was for gays.

I'm like R2. My grandmother also liked it. I remember it being very sweet tasting which appealed to me as a child. I don't like soda now, or soda pop as my grandmother would have said.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 2, 2020 8:03 AM |
Root beer tastes like medicine.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 2, 2020 10:46 AM |
Back in the 70s there was a 'drag king' (a female posing as a male) performing in the gay showbars in Atlanta who went by the name R. C. Cola.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 2, 2020 10:50 AM |
Coca Cola had a medicinal aftertaste to it. RC was always clean and crisp but not as sweet as Pepsi.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 2, 2020 2:02 PM |
R26, only if they are members of the Insane Clown Posse (ICP).
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 2, 2020 2:09 PM |
I must admit, as a lifelong Atlanta native and a Coca Cola stock owner I've enjoyed the beverage for many decades. But I remember that RC Cola was just a touch better back in the day. It had just a bit more acidic bite to it and less sweetness than Coke. And I like my colas to burn as they're going down. These days when I drink a cola (which is rarely) I only drink Coke Zero, or whatever they're calling it these days. The sugar in regular soft drinks makes my hypoglycemia go crazy.
That filth Pepsi should be outlawed. It is of the Devil.

10 years ago I was in a bad auto automobile accident and received a bad blow to the head which affected my sense of taste.
I can no longer tell the difference between root beer and Dr Pepper.

What weird Twilight Zone office are you working in, r19?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 2, 2020 3:37 PM |
R30, he wasn't a drag king. Years ago we had an entire thread about him and the old ATL scene.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 3, 2020 2:36 PM |
Good God, I always thought he was a woman pretending to be a man. I only saw him live once and he was in full attire, no posing straps.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 3, 2020 3:05 PM |
But of course Mike Stivic of AITF would prefer RC. But this...
[Quote] Pepsi & Coke combined forces to try and drive RC out of business. They paid Supermarkets, grocery stores etc to provide the most visible, ideal space for their products and RC Cola was relegated to the worst shelf space
...makes me want to drink it more. I hate bullies.

We need them to put cocaine back in cola. I’ll take a case!

When I was in high school my family ran the concession stand at the local pool in the summers. We wanted to maximize profits so we went with the RC lineup of drinks for our soda fountain as it was much less expensive than the big two. RC had a knock off of Sprite called either Teem or Bubble Up, I don’t remember which, but it had a nasty, cloying aftertaste I can still remember.
Other childhood sodas I remember in the Midwest are Ski, a citrus soda similar to but less trashy than Mountain Dew. I really liked that one. Also a cream soda called Big Red that was probably dyed with the cancer causing Red Dye #2.
