So true. He was great when he was younger with his random interjections. Now he's just awkward. They've been trying to write him as a teenage horndog in recent years. It's amusing that people are making fun of the speculation that it is Mr. Gould. I will say though that while waiting to die I do sometimes watch the Modern Family blocks on USA (usually 4 hours). Typically, they show them in the order shot, but sometimes they have a theme which means they jump around. It has struck me that on those eclectic evenings one sees Nolan as a typical kid and then suddenly Nolan as a queeny teen, with some stereotypical gay behaviors, incipient lisp. cobra neck, rolling shoulders and gay-inflected line readings. It's actually rather stark. Now, they say he's very, very bright and quite gifted musically, and arty teen boys sometimes go through a femme stage on their way to heterosexual adulthood. But it's hard to watch those contrasting shows without its crossing one's mind that he's "that way". He's been to the gym, but I think he veers to homely and can't act at all. Manny, who has quite the weight problem (that too is clear on the eclectic nights) is a better actor I think and doesn't seem fey, but can't quite pull off the elegant poseur character they have assigned him. But when it comes to reading lines, Manny wins. And they'll both be so rich by the time this phony, false, and manipulative crap shoot ends, it won't matter.
