My great uncle claims that he hooked up with Maharis in a men's room at the old Bambergers in Newark, NJ, years ago, when Maharis was a young NY soap actor. Is Maharis out?

Your Great Uncle was a whore... darling.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 7, 2010 5:48 AM |
A friend of mine hooked up with him in the late 70s. He would have been about 50 by then but apparently he was still in great shape.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 7, 2010 7:50 PM |
I tricked with George several times before he was famous. Lived in a West 40s walk-up. Had three wigs on styrofoam heads. Changed them throughout the month to make it look like his hair was growing, but he was a good bottom.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 7, 2010 8:18 PM |
That's what hurt Maharis' career - he was arrested in a men's room twice, late 60s-early 70s. I saw him about 15 years ago - way overtanned, and lots of gold jewelry. Not attractive. [italic]"George Maharis Arrested in Men's Room", Gay Scene, December 1974: "Famous Hollywood actor George Maharis was arrested November 21 and charged with committing a sex act with a hairdresser in the men's room of a gas station in Los Angeles... He was booked on a sex perversion charge along with Perfecto Telles, 33, the hairdresser, and released on $500 bail, according to police." An earlier guilty plea for a Hollywood lewd conduct arrest on 15 December 1967 with a male is also documented. [/italic]

As someone who has worked with family trees, I'd prefer that many of you started referring to the siblings of your grandparents as your grand-aunts and grand-uncles. It is far more symmetrical and the preferred choice for those in genealogy. he got his $ thru investments over a long career. A producer he worked with who also worked with Clint Eastwood was partly the mentor that helped him, I think a lot of it was land investments in the 60 s. He lives in NY and Beverly Hills, kept a low profile, lived simply and appears to have done things right in his life. Is a painter now and sells his work.

Interesting stuff from r61's link, they seemed to hinting that he is gay:
Most of the spare time he has is spent answering local and long distance calls from young females he’s never met or even heard of, and none of whom realize they’re wasting their time.
Dolls are one of the things Maharis is too big to play with. When the subject of romance comes up, as it does almost every time he’s interviewed, Maharis usually shrugs it off with the comment: “I’m free and easy—like the wind. And I intend to stay that way.”
Bachelorhood seems a desirable estate for him in view of Maharis’ fierce drive toward the top.

Maharis wasn’t loath to let off steam in a memorable interview in which he said Milner was basically a snob.
“He looks down on everybody,” Maharis fumed to a writer. “I mean, I realize he’s been around 15 years and I’m a newcomer carrying the whole load of the show and there’s jealousy involved. But the month I was in the hospital - not one word, nothing, from him in all that time. He has no concern for anybody. Shall I say he’s lacking in human qualities and let it go at that?”
by Anonymous | reply 80 | July 1, 2017 9:01 PM |
He blamed his failure to reach stardom as a vocalist on his singing teacher, who tried to convert him from baritone to tenor.
“That bum ruined my voice,” Maharis complained. “I was just getting good when I started to take lessons. After the first few lessons I could hardly talk, let alone sing. It took me years to get my voice back.”
by Anonymous | reply 81 | July 1, 2017 9:02 PM |
“George’s love affair with George will stand the test of time,” says an associate on Route 66. “And don’t be fooled by his tantrums. He’s got a very well-organized disorganization.”
Producer Herbert Leonard thinks so, too.
Fuming about Maharis, Leonard charged, “He brought an alarm clock to the set with him every day, would set it so that it rang at two hours and 57 minutes, then would knock off on grounds that he wasn’t a well man.”
by Anonymous | reply 82 | July 1, 2017 9:02 PM |
When the subject of romance comes up, as it does almost every time he’s interviewed, Maharis usually shrugs it off with the comment: “I’m free and easy—like the wind. And I intend to stay that way.”
Bachelorhood seems a desirable estate for him in view of Maharis’ fierce drive toward the top. Though he admits that, at 28, he loses his temper faster and more often than he ever did before, Maharis denies stardom has gone to his head. Trying to explain his dedication to acting, Maharis compared it to a weathervane, which he said turned with the wind and had an arrow pointing the direction.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | July 1, 2017 9:04 PM |
“He tears up scripts, refuses to learn his lines or act out scenes which he doesn’t feel,” a cast associate says. “He also insists on changing dialogue to suit his mood of the moment—which may change to an entirely different mood five minutes later.”
by Anonymous | reply 84 | July 1, 2017 9:04 PM |
Milner wasn’t the trim-looking fellow you saw on “Route 66” when he was initially cast. “When they found Marty, he was about 40 pounds heavier, and they told him he had to lose weight. I think he gained some of it back after the show. But he was very good about holding the weight down during the show’s run.”

Mel Torme ripped Maharis to shreds when he wrote his tell-all about what a train wreck the Judy Garland Show was. Mel was the show's musical director (before he was fired) and he put all the blame on Judy.

Torme said Maharis was the new CBS heartthrob who was foisted on them by the network. He called him untalented,. unprofessional and accused him of ruining Torme's musical arrangements and the entire episode. Did not mention his sexuality.

Maharis stole Torme’s toupee one time backstage at a Dick Cavett special. Torme was further angered when it was revealed Maharis had made a “special” shrine with the toupee. Apparently George placed the toupee on a cut off plastic sex blow up doll head and would mouth fuck it nightly pretending it was Torme.
His career was never smoking
Actually, it was, for the first couple of years of Route 66.

Wow, this thread has been around for six years.

Well, George has been around for 90, so...

I refused to have him on my show because...Well we had standards back then of course Betty White's gay husband welcomed him

He doesn't look so hot on Password. He certainly comes off as full of himself

Milner was much cooler. Martin Milner and James Garner had similar pleasant personalities. Maharis was an a-hole.

A relative liked Maharis. He had a sweet ass and a beautiful body. No man can be cruising for dick at 89! Two local men (60s and 70s) hit on me. I thought by that age testosterone just declines. Doctors need to stop prescribing that. Thanks for the dirt on Torme. I've always wondered about that jerk. Stupid me had no idea Maharis is gay. Who had the balls to claim charming Allen Ludden was gay? Like Bea Arthur said, Betty is the cunt! And from my financial background, the majority of people holding is going to vote GOP regardless of sexual orientation or social views. Almost nobody wants to pay his or her fair share of taxes, but I've never complained.

R150, of course Ludden was gay. That was well known. And THAT'S why Bea Arthur despised Betty White, because White was Ludden's beard (and also Liberace's, Tab Hunter's, etc., etc.).
As for Maharis, he was smokin' hot, and the producers of Route 66 were pissed because they KNEW he was exactly as he claimed -- the star of the show, and not that milktoast Martin Milner. He was probably extremely frustrated as well, because back then, being himself was AGAINST THE LAW.

milner was never hot....bland as fuk....george was the STAR.

Agreed R152. They're playing a 'Route 66' marathon on 'DecadesTV' and Milner just blended in with the background. Trying to look macho, tough...just laughable.
He did look better though in an episode where they beat the shit out of him.

"During the middle of the Route 66's third season peak, Maharis abruptly left the series. Maharis told the story that he had contracted infectious hepatitis in 1962, and that the shoots were so grueling that to continue would risk his health. He asked the producers to give him a less arduous schedule, but they refused, and he left the show, to be replaced by Glenn Corbett in the role of Lincoln Case.
However, others relate a different scenario. Route 66 producer Herbert B. Leonard found out that Maharis was gay and was having a hard time keeping his star’s sexual activities away from the press. Maharis also used the illness, Leonard said, as an excuse to break his contract so that he could get into movies. Co-star Martin Milner and a Route 66 writer-producer confirm this version."

Ok how do I change my signature to “Perfecto Teles?”
by Anonymous | reply 157 | March 8, 2021 7:35 AM |
Not sure how he looks today at age 92, but he sounds coherent.

Twelve years ago (2006) at age 80 he looked like this (link). I'd say generally-healthy looking, good weight and complexion. The hairpiece is a little too BIG for a man his age, but colorwise, it blended well with his beard. He was dressed well too. The actress with him is Eva Marie Saint. She's still with us as well, now 96.

He ruined his career by fighting with everyone on the set of Route 66 & continually getting hepatitis. Everyone knew where he was getting the hepatitis from. He was indiscreet. When Tony Perkins kept visiting Tab Hunter on a movie set the production team, banned Perkins from the set so he didn’t ruin both his & Hunter’s career. But nobody could stop Maharis from his toxic personality or from constant tea room activities and he ruined his reputation & his health, which ruined his career.

I'd like to know if George and Sal Mineo hooked up in when they were both in that 1975 Police Story episode ("Test of Brotherhood" S03E07).
Also, any news or hint over the years on whether he's got a book in the works or planned? He'd better hurry up.

R159, put the bottle down. 2006 was 14, going on 15 years ago. But you're right, Saint is 96...the cradle robber!

R161, his parents lived well into their 90's, I think the mother was 99. He's doing okay.
He at least seems very engaged and coherent in the interview at the link at R158.
I wonder if Dorothy "Butch" Malone watched as George had a three-way with Dick Sargent, Van Johnson and Robert Reed...
it’s an open secret in Route 66 circles that Maharis has argued with everyone from prop boy right up to and including Herbert Leonard, the show’s producer.
