I was at a party at the Petersons' home the night it happened. They were socialites in a small town and you know you've got to have a gay or two there.

Never got the gay vibe from Michael, though he had that whole effete writer thing going on.

Re: the name Peterson, it seemed there for a few years that if your married name was Peterson you would end up in a oil barrel in the bottom of a lake somewhere. Think Lacy, and that other girl that was killed by her police officer husband a few years after his previous wife 'drowned' in an empty tub

oh, and the rent boy (blonde, cute, kinda chunky) started coming into the bar I worked in while in college shortly after the trial and turned into a huge, drunken mess. Was arrested a few months later for prescription drug doctor shopping

Peterson didn't ping at all to me. He just seemed like a typical gung-ho marine type. Not overly macho, but I didn't get any gay vibes at all.

Anywho who lived in Durham during the trial knew that Peterson was practically bludgeoned to death with details about his life. I was an undergraduate student at Duke at the time, and the happenings of the case were reported in the student newspaper every day, certain classes actually took field trips to the court to watch proceedings, and it was a pretty frequent topic of discussion at lunch or dinner.%0D %0D It's funny, though, because any undergraduate gays at Duke at the time would tell you that he seemed very, very gay... It was hard for us to believe that he ever really passed as straight in the first place.

I think the circles he ran in were not very accustomed to dealing with openly gay men - the same is true for Duke, which has a ridiculous amount of closet cases for a major university - so they probably bought that he was straight, for fear of having to consider the alternative.%0D %0D Openly gay students and professors would have been able to tell, though... There's a certain way that closeted guys behave, and Peterson just fit the bill.

Now, now Mr Peterson is a writer. I thought he had made it very clear to all that his shopping around for gay sex was for a new book. Too bad he didn't let his dead wife in on this before she found the computer and went postal. Could have saved a lot of cleaning bills on that stairway.

I just finished watching The Staircase 2 r5, and there is no mention of a party at the Peterson's that day or night, nor have I found any information online about a party.

I think being closeted and the terror it brings can drive one to become homicidal.

R25 I'm glad someone else caught that outright lie. There was no party whatsoever. Not even a little drinks get together. I am an avid true crime fan, and this Peterson case is so much more fascinating than the other Peterson "spouse-o-cides." I believe that Michael is the closest thing to a textbook sociopath I've ever seen in action. If anyone reading this, and yes I know it's old, and you have not watched The Staircase, run do not walk and see it as soon as possible. It will pull you in like no other crime doc you've ever seen. It is Shakespearean.

He was definitely gay. He had a think for rent boys and towards the end was rumored to have gotten into meth. Supposedly fell hard for one of the rent boys and had to make wifey fall hard down the stairs. Again, rumor, but one of his latest rent boys ended up being HIV+ and mike liked to take dick raw.

I watched it on the Sundance Channel right after it came out. I would be very surprised if t wasn't on You Tube now. It is 6 or parts, so it is long, but I swear to god it's one of those rare things where you don't want it to end because it pulls you in and is so well done.

Notorious at the local Y as someone who always who seemed a bit off and constantly "stared".

Shortly after the wife's death a friend in Durham said the police were all over his closeted life snd to expect a lot of juicy details-and (one other thing I have never seen referenced) that both Peterson and the wife were swingers and there was a play room in the house.

One of the sons was also acted a bit creepy at the Y-often staring at guys. Not sure if it was the one who called in the bomb threat at Duke.

I think Peterson was beaten up shortly after being sent to Butner and paid other inmates to protect him and serve as body guards.

He's kept a fairly low profile since his release but is back at the Y according to a FOAF...

The case against Peterson was largely circumstantial. He hired rent boys so he must have killed his wife! A close friend died after a fall down a staircase, so did his wife, he must have done it!

There were many suspicious things about Peterson's life, but not much actual evidence.

It seems to me that a large percentage of narcissistic sociopaths have bisexual tendencies. And I think he certainly qualifies.

I've forgotten some of the details of the case (I watched The Staircase a few years back & saw the 48 Hours report, or was it Dateline? - when the new "owl defense" came out), but he definitely killed both of those women.

Marine corps Brent has cleaned his life up and is in a stable gay relationship now.

I have worked with him, and he is a fun guy.

He is clearly guilty....I do think he didn't get a fair trial, though. I think the prosecutors were trying to play on the homophobia of the typical North Carolina resident
