The late, great Russian ballet dancer and gay sexpot has been too-long ignored by Datalounge. In his artistic and sexual heyday - the "Golden Age of Promiscuity" - there was hardly a man alive who would turn down Nureyev. Here is an invitation to those of you who knew Nureyev - or even better, who had Nureyev - to share your experiences.
Rudolph Nureyev (1938-1993)

His biographies are very tedious and merely point out the fact that he was EXTREMELY self-absorbed. Brilliant dancer, though--all the technique Barishnikov wishes he had.

Rent Ken Russell's VALENTINO or catch it the next time it's on TCM-- Nice shots of Rudolph, his cock and ass in his love scene with Michelle Phillips. He also did a Playboy pictorial.

"Had an affair with Tab Hunter."
Who didn't? Tab's legs were in the air more often than Nureyev's ever were in his entire career.

The biography I read called "Dancer" was pretty revealing. Rudy was remarkable. He had standards. If it had a pulse, he'd fuck it. The denouement was very sad.

I was 12 years old when my mother brought me to see him dance with Dame Margot Fonteyn. It seemed as if he could fly! I have never seen anything to compare it with, in my life!

Rudy used to like to order a Large Coke from the cute waiters at Fiorello's, but he would exaggerate his accent and ask for "a BIG COCK."

Gore Vidal, who naturally knew Rudi - hosted him when he was visibly ailing - mentioned Rudi's apparently flirtatious relationship with RFK in his memoir 'Palimpsest.'

Erik Bruhn was a fine, good looking, man.

The Diane Solway biography is fascinating. I'm not much interested in ballet, but his story--which is all about drive and ambition--is very compelling. He reminded me of Maria Callas insofar as they were both fairly ornery characters who were obsessive about perfecting their art.

RFK and Nureyev, I'd pay to see that. When did that story come to light?

R17 "Dancer" is not a biography. It is a NOVEL based on Nureyev's life.

The only artistic experience that I missed out on that I really regret was seeing him and Dame Margot dance. In 1973, I was in high school and was on a trip to France with my French teacher and a group of students. He and she were dancing Swan Lake in the garden of the Louvre with recorded music rather than I live orchestra. It was one of those summertime offerings meant largely for tourists, I guess. It was just a few nights after Bastille Day. They were both, especially she, past their prime as dancers, but it would still have been worth it.
The night before I had been suddenly struck with tourist illness while we were out at a nice restaurant--I would say food poisoning, but no one else got it. After embarrassing myself on the streets of Paris and being taken back to our hotel by another student, I was still ill the next morning. So I missed the group tour of the Louvre itself, a part of the missed experience. Before they left for the tour, the teacher had asked me if I wanted a ticket to the ballet since they were going to purchase them when they got to the Louvre. I said no because I was sure I wouldn't feel any better by that evening. As luck would have it, I felt fine by the late afternoon.
Then again, a few years later I saw Valentino and was astounded at the body.

In a biography of Dominick Dunne, Dunne talks about going to a party at Alan Carr's. Nureyev was there. At the end of the party everyone did drugs and fucked Nureyev. It was called the "Mattress Party" and Nureyev was the mattress.

[quote] all the technique Barishnikov wishes he had.
R11, comparing artists (or athletes) of different generations is usually unfair, but I'l have to disagree with you on this. Baryshnikov was much cleaner technically, as well as more flexible, with a better line and better feet. He also changed what was expected from men (4 turns were the new 2, which were no longer good enough).
Did this make him a better dancer than Nureyev? From one perspective, yes. However ... I was lucky to have seen them both (although Nureyev a bit past his prime in 1969) and he was FEROCIOUS onstage. The impact of his stage presence went beyond technique. He was like a wild animal. Spectacular. You felt he'd invaded your personal space and ravaged you.
Baryshnikov was a superb dancer: clean, precise, elegant in spite of his height, as well as explosive in the air and in his turns. Absolutely something to aspire to be if you were a young dance student. You couldn't aspire to be Nureyev -- he was unique.

he kept a blonde young muscle boy in his dressing room who fucked him as often as possible.
rudi was fuking georgous , but dame margo fonteyn was awesome. so nice .....the real deal. she adored rudy , for a while.
one night i tricked with a boy in the ballet who went on to be head of the thing , but his roomie was the hot one. saw him once in LA and he took me to chris isherwoods house, once owned by greta garbo in santa monica, .....
chris and don bacardy were sweet. ....... i fell in love with the house......they were an odd pair tho, don and chris........i can say no more.

R67, you should write an autobiography!

A fellow in my building lived in NYC and was a hoo-doo in the ballet scene in the day. Don't know the date or even the year, but this fellow is very social and hosts many dinner parties. Anyway, he invited Rudy to a dinner and Rudy wanted to know who he could fuck and the fellow told him he wasn't gonna pimp for him. Not much of a story, but it shows that some people stood up to the common line.

by Anonymous | reply 74 | January 6, 2018 6:55 PM |
Towards the end of his career, Nureyev had so many injuries and such godawful feet that he'd sometimes ride a bicycle from his dressing room to the stage. Walking that far was agony, but he'd still perform. Not as well as he did when younger, that's one reason his technique went to hell.
And if you want to talk about Nureyev vs. Baryshnikov, they had very different styles but the same teacher. They were both taught by a Mr. Pushkin at the Kirov ballet school, Baryshnikov some years after Nureyev defected. He acted as a father figure to two boys away from home, and brought out their strengths to make them both huge stars with very different styles. And I don't think they ever became friends in the west, but they refrained from any embarrassing show of rivalry. Baryshnikov was much better technically, both in the details and at difficult stunts, but Nureyev had more star quality! No other ballet dancer ever had his feral, dangerous presence, maybe Nijinky did but nobody else.
Incidentally, found a pic of the two of them with Gwen Verdon. Are we quite sure Barychnikov is straight?
by Anonymous | reply 75 | January 6, 2018 8:26 PM |
Baryshnikov was a Blond Adonis and women threw themselves at him. He had an affair with the ballerina who was his costar in The Turning Point and supposedly left her for Jessica Lange. (I think, I just know he dumped someone for Jessica).

Nureyev was truly beautiful. He got very screwed up by how much people raved over him and his beauty and talent--it really went to his head.
Baryshnikov, while not quite as good looking, channeled all that praise into his work somehow--he didn't behave as self-destructively as Nureyev did.

"There was something homophobic in the way NY tossed over Rudy for Mikhail, who after all, was just as big and queenie a slut. "
Baryshnikov settled in NYC, I believe Nureyev's official home base was London and the Royal Ballet.
And yeah, Baryshnikov was also a huge slut but seems to have been more stable and work-oriented overall. Or maybe he just got lucky, being straight or mostly straight at a time when that was really convenient.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | January 6, 2018 10:47 PM |
Baryshnikov made The Turning Point with Shirley MacLaine which was a critical and popular movie in the 80s---almost got Best Picture ---and this immediately sent him to into the stratosphere. People forgot about Nureyev, especially after his very bad performance in that forgettable movie.
