Do you know a smart cop? The entire police force is made up of those guys in high school who were assholes and then too stupid to go to college. So if they didn't go to the military or got a job in construction, they opted for the police academy. I hate that stupid people and peasants are in charge of enforcing our laws.
Police Officers are really stupid

I totally fucking agree.
Got a ticket in an obvious (unfortunately for me, obvious after the fact) speed trap for going fifteen miles over the speed limit. Out in the middle of Nowhere, New England on a clear night with no other cars around.
Didn't mind paying the ticket, but when asked for my insurance card (why is it even the government's fucking business if I have auto insurance or not?) I gave him an expired one. Expired by about three months--I'd been covered the entire time, just forgot to put the new card in my glovebox.
So this ASSHOLE keeps me waiting in my car on a freezing cold night for over 40 minutes (I was driving back from skiing) while he is on his little techy-police-y computer verifying that I have insurance.
Nearly an hour later he walks his fat, bullying ass back to my car and hands me a ticket for "no proof of valid insurance". FUCK YOU!
Had to appear in court missing a morning of work to show the judge my coverage had indeed not lapsed. Couldn't fax it in, walk it over to a clerk, mail it, etc. but appear before a goddamned judge with all the other "real criminals". Ticket dismissed.

I take exception to both of your posts, and while every organization has their losers, the NYC Police force is pretty fucking solid, especially these days. I do see your point though, because interestingly, on several different tv stations this past weekend after the bombing attempt, the reporters interviewed out-of-towners who while praising the NYC police, rolled their eyes and said the police from where they came from would have taken days to do what the NYPD did in a matter of minutes.

METRO NEWS BRIEFS: CONNECTICUT; Judge Rules That Police Can Bar High I.Q. Scores
Published: September 9, 1999
NEW HAVENâ A Federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit by a man who was barred from the New London police force because he scored too high on an intelligence test.
In a ruling made public on Tuesday, Judge Peter C. Dorsey of the United States District Court in New Haven agreed that the plaintiff, Robert Jordan, was denied an opportunity to interview for a police job because of his high test scores. But he said that that did not mean Mr. Jordan was a victim of discrimination.
Judge Dorsey ruled that Mr. Jordan was not denied equal protection because the city of New London applied the same standard to everyone: anyone who scored too high was rejected.
Mr. Jordan, 48, who has a bachelor's degree in literature and is an officer with the State Department of Corrections, said he was considering an appeal. 'I was eliminated on the basis of my intellectual makeup,' he said. 'It's the same as discrimination on the basis of gender or religion or race.'

by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 6, 2010 1:26 PM |
Thanks for that link, R5. Someone told me once, and I believe them, that cops everywhere are tested for intelligence. They always weed out the high scorers because they don't want anyone smart enough to really think about what cops do to people. They need dumb footsoldiers, nothing more. Planet of the Apes had it right, with the dumb gorillas as army and law enforcement who loathed and hassled the smarter chimpanzees.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 6, 2010 1:37 PM |
No, they are not all stupid. I know a quite a few, who are intelligent and are very dedicated to public service. There is a level of entitlement running through law enforcement across the country. A friend, who is the wife of an ex-cop, told me that this entitlement comes from being treated in their communities as if they were demigods. After receiving free cups of coffee, free lunches, and what not, many come to expect it and see themselves as above the law. She also said that many can become corrupt, and many cheat on their wives.

There are so many NYC cops (over 30,000) it's impossible to categorize...some are stupid, brutal animals; some are incredibly smart & focused. Some of them take the 20-and-out and go to grad school; and I believe the dept. also pays for undergrad degrees. There are guys (and women) I've met who have been supreme assholes from the word go, and absolute sweethearts who define the term "public servant." Unfortunately, in a huge dept., even a small percentage of the first is still in the thousands.

The deification of cops and firefighters in NYC since 9/11 has been SO FUCKING ANNOYING (particularly since I've always been baffled as to what they were credited for actually doing on that day). I'm a Brooklyn boy, and the cop or firefighter path is a popular one for the C students.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 6, 2010 4:58 PM |
I work in TV and wrote/produced several of those reality cop-shows. You wouldn't believe the appalling, incompetent and racist behavior we saw on the raw footage. More often than not, these guys were sociopathic thugs with badges. Blacks in the south pulled over for no good reason except to be harassed, etc. However, since these shows need police cooperation and access to their dash-cam footage, we always had to make it appear as if the cops' actions were justified and heroic. The spin control was off the chain.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 6, 2010 5:08 PM |
What r22 said. Most young men and women who are becoming police officers today have figured out that gaining experience in the field will be beneficial if they want to change careers later. Some of them will get money to go back to school. Id say these police officers are very smart to use their job as a stepping stone. But then again, you're talking about NYC. So yeah, the cops there might really just be dumb.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 6, 2010 5:11 PM |
R25, you could really make a difference by releasing that footage. But what you said makes even the argument that cops should wear cameras all of the time to tape their actions a moot one b/c it sounds like most are too psycho to care. Cops aren't even in the top 10 most dangerous jobs in America. Even with all of the guns out there.

I live in the City of St. Louis. A nice, historic neighborhood, good property values, a decent mix of SES's and ethnicity.
But it's St. Louis. Car thefts and break-ins, home break-ins, marauding urban gangs who assault people for credit in their group, drug sales around the nearby high school, prostitution, armed robbery - the whole range of city crime occurs at a fairly regular rate because of proximity and easy transportation.
The police do nothing. They don't patrol. They don't respond to call or respond late, often. They laugh when you ask what they're going to do. They admit they can't do anything to help and tell people to give up trying. Or they tell people to keep a constant look-out themselves and be sure to keep a log and report things to the neighborhood association.
The cops (and I've had reason to call them about five times in the last two years) at least are polite, except for the sense of ridicule. But they also seem dim and complacent. They certainly have done nothing to make any of the new residents want to stay in the city.
The higher-ups, with whom I've also talked, are politically savvy but equally uncommitted to action. It's a morass.
I grieve when a cop gets hurt or dies on the job, but the 1,000 cops attending the funeral may as well make being on an honor guard their regular job, for all the good they seem to do.

[quote]I never understood the deification of cops and firefights on 9/11 either. Weren't they just, uh... I don't know, doing their jobs? 9/11 was an inside job. The higher-ups in the media were and are in on it. They deified the cops and firefighters to conceal the fact that their deaths were part of a deliberate human sacrifice to justify a generations-long war. p.s. The cops and firefighters in NYC who survived 9/11 know the score. They are forbidden to talk about what they really saw and heard that day under threat of reprisal.

Let me get this straight OP, you don't deny that you were speeding and you admit your proof of insurance certificate had expired. You acknowledge that the cop made an attempt to verify your were insured but all you can do is complain that he kept you waiting while he was doing so. Based on these facts you conclude that all cops are stupid. Sounds to me like he was doing his job enforcing the law and if anyone were to be called stupid it would be you for not having the proper paperwork and thinking you're not going to get caught speeding once and a while. We all do.
I happen to think mandatory car insurance is an excellent idea. There were too many uninsured at-fault drivers and unable to provide compensation for the medical and material damages they caused. Besides protecting victims, the increase in enrollment has helped bring down the cost of insurance for everyone.
I'd be careful about making broad statements such as "police officers are really stupid" based on a single incident which itself doesn't appear to be a valid gripe. I'm sure we could fill this thread with anecdotal evidence of cops doing dumb things, but that still wouldn't convince me that ALL of them are stupid.

The police have cliques like you wouldn't believe. Most NYC cops live an hour or two from the city. They all take turns car pooling to/from work. Most other cops in big cities live outside of town too. They can't afford to live in the city. They get pissy spending 2½ - 3 hours a day in traffic just to get to and from work. R25, Isn't it bizarre (and scary) to deal with people like that? They'll be totally wrong about something, but grab for any shred of an excuse to justify their reasoning.Their reasoning is crazy.

A large percentage of the employees in the security and loss prevention departments at my job end up as cops. It really pissed me off when you see a cop that gets killed on duty and we act like it is a national sin these guys know they might get killed so when it happens we should not even acknowledge it they were doing there job and part of that is accepting the risk of getting killed. The Albuquerque Police Department currently has the DOJ supervising many of its training and retraining operations because of too many unjustified killings. I'm linking to the DOJ report.
I worked with a doctor whose son had recently graduated from the police academy in Albuquerque. He said he couldn't wait to get his first kill. When I expressed shock, the proud father told me that's what they all live for.
Seems to me getting a huge rush from killing another human being is what makes people become serial killers. So how are cops different from serial killers, especially cops who have killed more than one person?

Stand aside, please. Rant coming.
I hate cops. The most thieving, conniving cousin I had became a cop. I used to leave my bike at my aunt's house so I could ride it when I was there -- my mom dropped me off at my aunt's house nearly every day in summer and went to work. Twice, my bike disappeared. I was told they were stolen overnight. After the second bike, my parents said they were sorry, but they could not afford to buy me another bike.
Years later I found out he'd stolen each bike and sold them down at the local public pool. When he joined the police force my mother was tickled. "See how things turn out? He was such a hell raiser, but he matured and became a cop." I said, "You idiot. The police are all conniving thieves. They recognized him as one of their own. That's why they hired him."
He bought property in an area called Millionaire's Row for a pittance when he was in Narcotics. Two lots. Claimed it was a "nasty divorce" and the husband deliberately under sold the property to screw the wife. Nuh uh. He had a brother-in-law who was also a cop, whom he hated. The brother-in-law wound up buying the second lot from him for the same pittance. In other words, his BIL blackmailed him, knowing he'd gotten the lots through some kind of deal that let a drug dealer go free.
Cousin Cop racked up all the overtime he could, then claimed he injured himself on the job. Tried to retire on 100% disability. Only got 75% tax free disability on $110k pension. I worked as a nurse, have no pension and really am disabled and I get a pittance.
A douchebag in my neighborhood sets off ordinance every holiday. Not firecrackers, not Roman candles, but full professional fireworks (without a permit), M80s, you name it. It makes me nearly have a heart attack. I'm super sensitive to sound and was at WTC on 9/11. I'm a wreck with loud, violent noises. People's dog and cats have run away after these fireworks displays and birds have been killed in my trees. I called the police one year, who were required to come out and tell him to stop. You know what they did? The next holiday, they took the fireworks to the neighbor behind me -- a town cop. He let them shoot off the fireworks, knowing full well that the police would do nothing if I called and gave them his address.

I could tell you a million cop stories.
You know who NYPD loved? Bernard Kerik. Because "he was one if us. A regular beat cop."
And he sure in the fuck was one of them. He stole, he cheated, he lied, he drove Rudy Giuliani to his gf's apartments in the middle of the night for trysts, after calling in a false emergency to Giuliani, claiming the mayor was needed.
The chief of the NYPD is not supposed to come from the ranks. This is to prevent favoritism of any certain precinct, or to promote buddies who aren't qualified. It worked well before Kerik, with Bill Bratton. Bratton was despised by the rank and file because he was a pointy- headed intellectual who went to Harvard. But Bill Bratton stood up to Al Sharpton and prevented a riot by being conciliatory to members of a Black Muslim community after a nasty prank was played when someone claimed an armed gunman had entered the mosque. Instead of a brawl between police, Black Muslims and the unneeded Al Sharpton on the sidelines, Bratton called Don Mohammed instead. Bratton had a working relationship with Mohammed in Boston. He recognized that Black Muslims want exactly what the police want --- a safe community free of drugs, alcoholism and crime. So he worked with Black Muslims instead of against them.

Cops in Nassau County on Long Island are out if control. They are constantly beating and shooting people and getting away with it.
Last year, a robber entered a house where college students were living if campus. The neighborhood has a high crime rate because thieves know the students have laptops, tablets, expensive smartphones, iPods, etc. they know the kids are in school during the day and are often out at night or passed out in bed from drinking, so they do real quick B&Es, in and out with loot they can throw in a backpack.
One night, a guy entered a house and some of the students were awake. He grabbed a girl and put a gun to her heads he told the others he wanted $2,000 and that they were to go to an ATM to get him the money. The other students -- including the hostage's twin sister -- left the house for the ATM and immediately called police, telling them of the hostage situation. The dispatcher put out the call for the police and announced it was a hostage situation. A hostage negotiator was called and was en route to the scene when a hot dog cop arrived at the house, ran in and shot 8 bullets at the hostage taker, who was using the hostage as a shield. Of course the hostage was killed.
The hostage was a Portuguese girl who was a tanning fanatic, along with her sister. She had very dark skin. I have no doubt the cop believed she was black and figured, "Fuck it, I'm killing this bitch."
After the killings, police and members go their families went into the comments section of the local newspapers and claimed that it was a drug deal gone bad and the girl deserved what she got. The poor policeman, they said, had no choice but to let loose 8 bullets when the perpetrator supposedly pointed his gun at the brave cop.
The cop was NOT supposed to enter the house. It was a known hostage situation. He murdered the hostage in cold blood. As usual, Nassau PD exonerated the cop and found that it was a justified shooting.

[quote] DA's are even worse then cops.
This is true. DAs don't want to go to trial, so they manufacture as many charges as they can against someone who's been arrested. Then they say, "Take the deal on all these charges or else we will set up a separate court case on every single charge."
So if you have 10 counts (they'll add perjury by tricking someone into lying, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, etc to charges), they will bring you up on one charge at a time. If you're found not guilty of the first charge, they'll bring you up on the next charge. And on and on.
Who can afford 10 trials for 10 counts? The lawyers fees are outrageous. So people take a plea to all ten charges and go to prison.
America is a penal dictatorship.

In Suffolk County, LI, sheriffs make $200k a year. I'm not lying. My husband knows someone who has learning disabilities who struggled to get a college education. The guy had a couple of computer-oriented jobs bit all the firms he worked at either folded or went overseas. The guy works double shifts as a nurses aide to meet his child support payments and sleeps on the couch in his mother's senior citizens apartment.
His friend eschewed college and joined the sheriff's department through family connections. He was bitching about 7 years back about his job. Turns out he was making $160k a year. Most sheriffs with seniority are now making $200k a year.
A guy on our local police force was found to be a junkie. He was stealing drugs from dealers and stealing drugs from the evidence room. He went to rehab and the cops hired him right back again. All of the drug convictions over a 15 year period have to be reviewed, but it will be years before the courts go through all the cases, so people who are innocent will sit in jail while this douchebag collected back pay and makes over $100k a year.

The cop had been named a Police Officer of the Year. You can't make this stuff up. The homeowner wanted to press charges, then all of a sudden the police department said the home owner would not be pursuing charges.
Another guy walked into the local school through an unlocked door, flashed his police badge and began questioning school employees about building security. He had a 9 mm automatic handgun in his possession. Turns out he was a former NYPD officer who had reported his own ID missing before resigning from the force for "personal reasons."

[quote] And yet who's the first person you're going to call if you get mugged?
Once I get mugged, the crime has already been committed. The police didn't protect me or prevent the crime. Notifying the police is a formality that must be done. As another formality, I also have to call my credit card companies and call motor vehicle to report my license as stolen, but those people are never going to possibly ever shoot and kill me or beat me to death.
And there's no way the police are going to catch the mugger.

[quote]Another thing -- these "catch a predator" stings are totally unconstitutional. I have no love for pedophiles but this is double jeopardy.
That isn't the meaning of double jeopardy, and I have a feeling you're a pedophile.
The legal issues around those arrests have been argued and upheld.

Just yesterday I was on Facebook and ran across the page of a girl I went to high school with. There was a link to a memorial page. I went to it and it was for her stepson who was murdered (shot 4 times). There were 4 witnesses. The guy was found not guilty. Before he murdered this kid, he had been arrested for, armed robbery (with a gun), car jacking (with a gun) and various other crimes involving guns. He is a long time felon and never should have ever had a gun in his possession. He has gone on to commit other serious crimes in the 2 or 3 yrs since he was found not guilty of murder. Some of the crimes included him having a handgun and a stolen handgun. This piece of shit is going to kill someone else. 2 yrs ago he was caught riding down the street on a bike. The cop went to pull him over. He runs. The cops catch him with a stolen handgun. He's still roaming around the streets. This year he was arrested for trespassing and beating the hell out of someone
If you had to deal with this type of garbage all day, your attitude would change

R80, I could actually understand a cop killing someone like the guy you describe. Someone needs to get that guy off the streets and it's obvious the criminal justice system isn't up for the job.
Unfortunately, in my town the cops prefer to kill people who are either developmentally disabled or mentally ill.

[quote] A guy on our local police force was found to be a junkie. He was stealing drugs from dealers and stealing drugs from the evidence room. He went to rehab and the cops hired him right back again
I'll bet he didn't get rehired. He probably never got fired. They probably gave him a leave of absence or more than likely they gave him a paid medical leave so he could go to rehab. Despite the fact that he committed dozens of felonies, he probably went to rehab (while being paid and rehab being paid for by the taxpayers) and just went back to his job and didn't lose any vacation time or pay. He might be demoted one level or the police force will act like nothing ever happened.
That's all the fault of the unions. There is no reason for any union to support criminals who commit crimes on the job. But they do. They will fight to the death to protect the jobs of criminals and that's why unions have steadily lost support. Unions are committing suicide on the installment plan

R81, the woman I went to high school with, her husband is actually a police officer in another state than the one his son was killed in. On the memorial page he wrote something about having to take the day off because he just couldn't handle having to deal with people like the one who took his son's life

There are stupid cops. There are also stupid doctors. And stupid teachers. And stupid lawyers. And stupid politicians. And stupid...well, you'll find stupid people in just about EVERY profession you can name.
The OP is the stupid cop hater who keeps rearing his ugly head from time to time. I don't know what put the bug up his ass about cops (I tend to think he was arrested for something and his panties have remained in a bunch ever since), but it's obvious he's a total asshole.

[quote] Have you seen cops lately? With all of their new Darth Vadar paramilitary equipment and roided out cromag brows they're a far cry from the Mayberry looking ones of 20 years ago. The ones I know are all racist pieces of shit too. There are no good cops.
They can't help it. If you had to deal with the human garbage they have to deal with you would be the same way. You'd probably be worse. I would be.
I used to work in a small town near Atlanta. One of my customers was a state trooper. He was the loveliest, kindest, nicest person I have ever met. He has old southern manners. There wasn't a bad thing that could be said about him. One day he is on his way to work in his police car. He's not on duty yet. He sees some guy seriously tailgating another car (about 2 inches between cars). He decides to pull the guy over and warn him. He wasn't going to give him a ticket. He turns on the lights and sirens and the guy starts speeding and dangerously passing other cars and leads the trooper on a 4 mile chase. He pulls behind a convenience store and jumps out of his car with an AK 47 and tries to shoot the trooper. The trooper already had his gun out and shot the guy in the hip. The guy is airlifted to a hospital and then charged with bunches of crimes, including attempting to shoot an officer. A year later the trooper comes into my work. I ask him what was going on with that case. He says the guy was found not guilty and he is so upset that he took off the week from work. He said he lost his faith in the justice system. The judge that handled the case is also my customer. When he came in a week later I asked him what the hell happened with that case. He said it all came down to race. The criminal was African American and so was 80% of the jury. The whole entire thing was captured on the state trooper's vehicle's video system (the chase and the part with the gun). Despite that criminal pulling out an AK 47 and attempting to shoot an officer, he was found not guilty. The best part was the criminal said the gun wasn't his. As if that fucking matters and it's okay to try to shoot a police officer. The judge said the jury just didn't want to convict a black man of committing a crime against a police officer. He said this type of shit goes on all the time in that small town and everywhere. Ever since that trial, that trooper has been a changed person. He doesn't give people breaks anymore. Being kind to people when you are a cop is the easiest way to get yourself killed.

This is a worldwide problem. The police think they can handle people as dumb as them, but anybody with half a brain is bound to upset these stupid fuckers. In the UK they still think weed is a problem, but nobody ever gets done for crack. It's almost as if they want to drum up some business - stupid twats.

R43, not OP here, but I got a ticket once (made a right hand turn during hours when you could not -- totally my fault).
I didn't have current insurance card, but had a past one. The cop asked if I had current insurance and was this just an old card. I assured him it was. He believed me or ran me and found out right away; I got the ticket for the turn, but no insurance.
The cops have leeway; mine took some; op's didn't.

r96, at most they'll have good people skills, common sense and a 'sixth sense' about situations.
Really, that's probably all they require. If they move into the detective ranks, they might need degrees.
The problem is they're not mentored in anymore by veterans who show them what's really going on. How to problem solve on the streets isn't something they teach at the academy.
Their unions are also too militaristic and powerful.

I woke up one morning and found my car smashed into a neighbor's wall. I called the cops and they sent out an asshole who put his fine detective skills to work. He accused me of getting drunk the night before and wrecking my car. It took a lot of work on his part to ignore the smashed-in back of the car where someone had tried to push-start it and nevermind that my roommate who had been with me the night before was telling him I had been sober for more than 15 years.
Once in a while I've run into brighter cops, but most of them have been like the Dudley Do-Right they sent to my house that morning. Lots of deductions and little reasoning skills.

OP, take your anti-government bullshit back to Freeperville.
Without cops enforcing the laws for the government then people would do whatever they wanted.
Do you want hookers in your neighborhood? People setting up gambling rings in their basement? People growing drugs in their backyard? And what about speeders, or people that run stop signs!
You anti-government fuckers are sick. Cops are our friends.

I come from a large extended family. Which relative became a cop? My cousin who was the biggest liar, worst thief, biggest bullshitter and who was always getting into fights.
He stole and sold two of my bikes. I left my bike at my aunt's house so I could use it on the days my mother worked and I had to go to my aunt's house after school. The first time, he didn't know it was my bike. When I found out my bike was gone he realized it was mine and said, "Oh, I saw a kid steal it."
I had to wait until Christmas before I could get another bike. This time, I put it on the covered porch at my aunt's house, well away from the road. I knew it would be safe there. Ha.
This time, he knew damn well it was my bike and he took it and sold it. This time, he didn't say anything about anybody taking it. It was just gone.
I found out from another one of my cousins about 5 years later. "Oh yeah, he took them down to the public pool and sold them to some Spanish kids."
Typical. Fucking. Cop.
He now has a $110k, 75% tax free pension. There is no justice.

In a discussion of bad cops on NPR this morning, they stated that if a cop makes numerous charges of "resisting arrest" every time he brings someone in, it often indicates that the cop is physically bashing the people he's arresting. They went on to discuss an innocent man who had been beaten horribly by a cop -- at least he got a big payout from the city.

I got a speeding ticket on Thanksgiving day one year and the cop had written the court appearance date on it. I had no intention of taking off work to appear so I mailed a check to pay the fine. I didn't think anything more about it until the uncashed check came back in the mail. There was a Court Order with it that dismissed the ticket.
It turned out that when the cop put the date of the hearing (January of the next year) he'd written the wrong year so technically the hearing date was a year in the past.
