Which Christian denomination is the most homophobic?

Take the poll.

by Anonymousreply 56February 1, 2019 12:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 1April 10, 2010 1:11 PM

I'm not sure Mormons are really Christian.

by Anonymousreply 2April 10, 2010 2:16 PM

Mormons are not Christians.

by Anonymousreply 3April 10, 2010 2:20 PM

Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses are not Christian denominations.

by Anonymousreply 4April 10, 2010 2:28 PM

Jehovah's Witnesses consider themselves Christians. I used to be one.

by Anonymousreply 5April 10, 2010 2:40 PM

The 7 million or so Jehovah's Witnesses think they are Christian.

by Anonymousreply 6April 10, 2010 2:42 PM

I don't know of any major denomination that considers Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses as Christian other than themselves.

by Anonymousreply 7April 10, 2010 2:58 PM

And who made them arbiters, R7?

by Anonymousreply 8April 10, 2010 2:59 PM

JW are the most homophobic but Mormons are by far the most dangerous enemies we have (SBs are completely ineffectual).

by Anonymousreply 9April 10, 2010 3:09 PM

The bible is the arbiter r8

by Anonymousreply 10April 10, 2010 3:30 PM

Which version R10?

by Anonymousreply 11April 10, 2010 6:11 PM

I'm the son of a Southern Baptist minister.

The SBC--formed, by the way, from Baptists in the 19th century who believed slavery was justified because Blacks were descended from Noah's son Ham and God had doomed them to a life of servitude--is the most evil corrupt Republican machine you can imagine.

Then again, I don't know much about Mormons other than the prop 8 stuff. But if Southern Baptists were big in CA the way they are in the south, you can bet your sweet gay ass they would have poured more money into it than the Mormons ever could.

And when the issue eventually comes up in a southern state, they will be out in full force.

by Anonymousreply 12April 10, 2010 6:22 PM

The list was badly composed. As was noted above, Mormons and JWs are not Christians. I would have added Pentecostals to the list. Believe me, they and Baptists would have us executed if they could.

by Anonymousreply 13April 10, 2010 6:27 PM

Why are so many people here saying that Mormons and Jehova's Witnesses aren't Christians? Of course they are! I'm Jewish myself, and even I know that. (You'll find the JW under "5.3 Bible Student groups".)

Catholicism is not a "Christian denomination." It is the world's one true church and true faith.

by Anonymousreply 15April 10, 2010 7:02 PM

some Christains are not homophobic, they just dont want gays and what they do push into their faces, like 2 gays getting married etc.

by Anonymousreply 16April 10, 2010 7:16 PM

Christan means you accept the Nicene Creed. The basics of the Christian faith are there. Mormons believe that the Father, Son and Holy Ghost are all physical beings that have sex and procreate... three separate 'gods', living on planets somewhere. They believe all Mormon men are gods who will get their own planets to populate. Women go to the planets of their husbands. Your wife has to follow you wherever you go in the afterlife. The JWs also do not believe in the Trinity or accept the Creed. Both are cults.

by Anonymousreply 17April 10, 2010 10:30 PM

Southern Baptists

by Anonymousreply 18April 10, 2010 10:39 PM

JWs believe in Christ. Therefore, they're Christians.

Ask one the next time they're at your door.

by Anonymousreply 19April 10, 2010 10:40 PM

There is no church more gay-friendly than the Catholic church. Well, maybe the Episcopalians.

by Anonymousreply 20April 10, 2010 11:31 PM

R17 is right. Any religion can have Jesus as it's central deity, but unless they accept the Nicene Creed they are not considered part of The Church and therefore are not Christians.

by Anonymousreply 21April 10, 2010 11:33 PM

I can't choose. PLEASE don't make me choose!!!

by Anonymousreply 22April 11, 2010 3:27 AM

While some protestant Christian denominations do hold to the Nicene Creed (e.g., Episcopalians and United Methodists), there are others which do not (e.g., Southern Baptists). One could make a distinction between holding to the doctrines set out in the Nicene Creed, as opposed to the Nicene Creed itself. Most "orthodox" Christians (note the lower case "o" in the word "orthodox") consider LDS and JW to be cults. While they may believe in Jesus Christ and therefore are arguably "Christian" to that extent, they either add doctrines which have no basis in the Bible, or they take away doctrines which are accepted by orthodox Christians. Many also consider the Church of Christ to be cultic. I would have to agree that the most homophobic denominations are independent Baptists, followed by Southern Baptists.

by Anonymousreply 23April 11, 2010 3:56 PM

I didn't know the Southern Baptists did not accept the Nicene Creed... wow, what a surprise.

by Anonymousreply 24April 11, 2010 4:10 PM

Southern Baptist theology is violently evil. But the church itself is decentralized. Individual congregations have some leeway (thus Carter and Clinton were SBs). And beyond that, disorganized. Mormons are much more dangerous despite their small numbers for several reasons. One is that they follow orders from SLC. Second is that they have no professional priesthood. Third is that they enforce a strict tithe. While Catholics and SBs garner 1.5 - 2%, Mormons gather more than 10%, but not having to pay any priests, their outflow is much lower, so every year they have to think of what to do with billions of dollars rolling in. By now they have the largest single block of capital in the country. Yes, Catholics have real estate and so on, but the Mormons have MONEY and they use it to control companies, media, and groups like the Boy Scouts, as well as to put down gays.

by Anonymousreply 25April 11, 2010 4:39 PM

The Catholic Church is a cult of Pedophiles, ruled by an ex-Nazi with billions of dollars in hard cash, constantly replaced, by 20% of the world population. How can any other denomination out-corrupt that?

by Anonymousreply 26April 11, 2010 7:47 PM

A Christian in my family posted this on FB. There are more and more Christians who feel this way.

Since we did this thread, Mormons have gotten better, a little; and Russian Orthodox have totally gone off the deep end.

by Anonymousreply 28November 11, 2014 4:55 AM

And Mormons are still not Christian. I do t know about JWs.

by Anonymousreply 29November 11, 2014 5:02 AM

Mormons seem to be rather new to Homohate, as they discovered "The Homosexual Menace" can be a great recruiting tool $$$.

by Anonymousreply 30November 11, 2014 5:06 AM

Don't forget all those Eastern Orthodox Xtians, e.g., Greek, Russian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Syrian, Armenians, Serbian, etc. 300+ million VERY conservative Xtians far more homophobic than any of the Western Xtian rites.

by Anonymousreply 31November 11, 2014 5:38 AM

R20 The Catholic Church is friendly to gay...priests. And that's about it.

I'd say the Scienos are pretty awful.

by Anonymousreply 32November 11, 2014 5:47 AM

Many fundie Christian churches don't even believe Catholics are true Christians.

by Anonymousreply 33November 11, 2014 6:09 AM

Southern Baptists do believe in the Nicene Creed. The Southern Baptists are squarely within orthodox, historic Christian theology. They are conservative evangelicals, whose beliefs are definitely within the Creed.

by Anonymousreply 34November 11, 2014 4:03 PM

I's say Roman Catholic is the least particularly with the Pope doing what he can to drag religious views into the 21st century. Also having grown up Catholic I never met anyone who was very dogmatic. Everyone just wanted to make it through church on Sunday's and go back to doing whatever it is they do. After all if you fuck up just go confess, say a few prayers & you're good.

by Anonymousreply 35November 11, 2014 4:13 PM

Pentecostals!!!

by Anonymousreply 36November 11, 2014 11:50 PM

S baptists don't believe homosexuality is real, they say gay kids are confused because of some past experience (usually in relation to father or father figure) and they just need to pray more and harder to resolve the confusion.

by Anonymousreply 37November 12, 2014 12:51 AM

Church of Christ is the worst of any I've been around.

(Before anyone gets their bowels in an uproar, this is not the same group as United Church of Christ, a liberal Christian denomination.)

by Anonymousreply 38November 12, 2014 1:30 AM

The Mormons are homo-haters-come-lately types. They probably always hated us but they're fairly new to the "get 'em at the ballot box" strategery.

The Southern Baptists and all their fundie christer pals are the ones who've been trying to pink triangle us at the ballot box for lo, these many years. They, in concert with Republican swine, put all those hate the gays measures and anti-gay constitutional amendments on state ballots. The Republicans were just playing their usual dirty politics, most serious politicos don't give a fuck about anyone's sexual orientation. They'll use it if it gets them votes. It's the christian fundamentalists who make common cause with their Taliban fundie brothers and sisters and actually want us dead.

by Anonymousreply 39November 12, 2014 1:42 AM

A couple of very earnest Mormon missionaries in starched white shirts drove up and came to the door last Wednesday morning. They asked if I had any questions about the LDS church, and if they could discuss the election results with me.

I was really, extremely, creeped out. No! No!

They got in their SUV and split.

by Anonymousreply 40November 12, 2014 1:51 AM

Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses are not Christians

by Anonymousreply 41November 13, 2014 9:26 AM

Christian Borle.

by Anonymousreply 42November 13, 2014 9:46 AM

Those who didn't pick JW haven't investigated this cult thoroughly enough. They've also been accused of covering up pedophile behavior among church elders. Worse they are against higher education, especially for women.

I will agree JW don't have the financial resources nor the expansive growth of the others on OP's list.

by Anonymousreply 43November 13, 2014 9:59 AM

When you think of the Christian right you think of those fucktards the Southern Evanglicals (Baptists). I don't see how there can be another answer.

by Anonymousreply 44November 13, 2014 10:02 AM

The Southern Baptists send missionaries to African nations to preach death to gays.

The Mormon cult spends millions of dollars to campaign against equality for gays.

by Anonymousreply 45November 13, 2014 12:47 PM

Most Protestant denominations and non demoninational types are very homophobic more so than Roman Catholics. I think Anglicans/ Episcopalians are the least homophobic.

Having said that, they are all pretty homophobic in some sense.

by Anonymousreply 46January 31, 2019 10:18 PM

Russian orthodox clergy are extremely homophobic and have played a major role in the increase in persecution of and violence towards gays/lesbians in Russia.

by Anonymousreply 47January 31, 2019 10:32 PM

Mormon beliefs are not based on the Christian bible, but rather what the pedophile Smith dreamed up and wrote down, partially to bring acceptance to his pedophilia. They believe Christ came to the New World, and that when you die you go to a planet in outer space. Def not Christian beliefs.

by Anonymousreply 48January 31, 2019 10:36 PM

I have always been interested in both Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses. (Yes, I think they're both cults.)

The Jehovah Witness Bible is purposely mistranslated in placed to support their weird theology.

by Anonymousreply 49January 31, 2019 10:42 PM

Southern Baptists do not recite or subscribe to the Nicene Creed because they don't believe in having creeds. But their stated beliefs are firmly with the tenets of the Nicene Creed. Crazy but that's how it works. Catholics officially oppose homosexuality but at least in the US on a family level it's largely no big deal. Polls indicate strong acceptance of gay marriage among US Catholics. Of course there are the Trads in Catholic Church who homophobes. Finally, I think the E. Orthodox got a low vote because people don't know who they are.

by Anonymousreply 50January 31, 2019 10:51 PM

Just in my personal experience, Southern Baptists. I work with several Jehovah's Witnesses who know I'm gay, and they're very warm and kind to me. When we've ended up sharing some personal info, they've reminded me that they didn't agree with homosexuality, but again, they've accepted me as a friend, despite our differences. I've only experienced actual meanness to me for being gay from Southern Baptists. And, growing up as a Catholic, I received a lot of meanness from Southern Baptists for being Catholic.

by Anonymousreply 51January 31, 2019 10:57 PM

[quote]Both are cults.

ALL religions are cults. When you grow up, you'll figure that out on your own.

by Anonymousreply 52January 31, 2019 11:42 PM

Eh ... religion is a bit more nuanced than that, r52

by Anonymousreply 53January 31, 2019 11:47 PM

My experience with Southern Baptists jibes with R51. They can be personally hateful to gays AND Catholics.

by Anonymousreply 54January 31, 2019 11:51 PM

Are Southern Baptists a strictly American thing? Do they have a presence in Europe or other parts of the world?

by Anonymousreply 55January 31, 2019 11:53 PM

Southern Baptists were the Baptists of the Confederate States! They were formed because they supported slavery when they broke away from Baptists in the northern states. Ironically, they send missionaries to Africa, R55. Also I am certain there are small numbers elsewhere. I know there are Southern Baptists in Russia where they are persecuted by the Russian Orthodox.
