FIFA sides with Trump's attempt to move the World Cup matches out of Democratic cities.

LA Olympics next?

[quote]Global soccer body FIFA issued a statement to multiple news outlets on Wednesday confirming the U.S. government has the ability to move 2026 World Cup matches amid recent comments from President Donald Trump regarding host city safety.

No LA28 is not next. Don’t be a fool. There is no other place in the world that could host on 24 months’ notice.

by Anonymousreply 1October 16, 2025 1:14 PM

JFC, Trump sure is spreading our money around!

by Anonymousreply 2October 16, 2025 1:17 PM

Jesus Christ, WHAT has he got on everybody?

by Anonymousreply 3October 16, 2025 1:23 PM

It’s ALL about making money through side deals and grifting, R3.

ANYTHING and EVERYTHING this man does is either about cashing in, or revenge.

That’s all, and that’s it.

If it’s not paying him, or enacting pain upon those who he believes have fucked him over, he’s not interested.

by Anonymousreply 4October 16, 2025 1:28 PM

I figured this would happen. FIFA has a long, extensive history with corruption and graft. There's probably a Wiki page devoted to it.

by Anonymousreply 5October 16, 2025 1:53 PM

R1, of course they are not going to move the Olympics, but he will threaten to do so or send in troops during the Olympics to make sure there is no " violence."

[quotes] “Safety and security are the top priorities at all FIFA events worldwide. Safety and security are obviously the governments’ responsibility, and they decide what is in the best interest for public safety. We hope every one of our 16 host cities will be ready to successfully host and fulfill all necessary requirements,

FIFA is one of the most corrupt organizations on the planet (Next to the IOC funnily enough) so they'd likely side with him in a heartbeat if the bribe was big enough. But I don't get how that statement is saying they're ready to move the games. They're just saying security at them is obviously a matter for the US local and national governments.

by Anonymousreply 7October 16, 2025 1:54 PM

FIFA and the IOC are corrupt enough to go along with anything, but time is a limiting factor. Even if Trump wanted the Olympics to be held in a red state and bribed/coerced the IOC to agree, there simply isn't the time for any such city to prepare.

Moving some world cup matches from Boston is much easier. I don't think it will happen but it's at least possible.

by Anonymousreply 8October 16, 2025 2:03 PM

R6 troops are SOP at an Olympics. It’s an occasion where everyone is happy to have a full military-security apparatus in place.

by Anonymousreply 9October 16, 2025 2:05 PM

There is no other city in the US that could host even with 36 or 48 months’s notice.

by Anonymousreply 10October 16, 2025 2:06 PM

There are no WC matches in Boston, LA, or even Dallas or SF. They are in separate, suburban municipalities.

He’s too stupid to even grasp that.

by Anonymousreply 11October 16, 2025 2:09 PM

FIFA and IOC will do anything! Money talks

by Anonymousreply 12October 16, 2025 7:44 PM

IOC can’t do anything, other than cancel the 28 Games or move them to 29 or 30.

Ain’t gonna happen.

by Anonymousreply 13October 16, 2025 8:18 PM

BFFs Infantino and donald -separated at birth?

Jeez!

by Anonymousreply 14October 16, 2025 9:10 PM

The FIFA World Cup isn't awarded to cities, it's awarded to countries and it's up to the countries' authorities in which cities the matches are held.

by Anonymousreply 15October 17, 2025 10:09 AM

This WC was awarded jointly to the US, Canada and Mexico. There are three host countries.

by Anonymousreply 16October 17, 2025 10:14 AM

The national federations of the three countries are the “official” organizers, but FIFA retains final authority.

by Anonymousreply 17October 17, 2025 10:17 AM

There is no way to move the Olympics without collapsing the whole IOC structure. It's hard enough to find cities that are able to host it anyway.

by Anonymousreply 18October 17, 2025 10:21 AM

It would be worth it R18.

by Anonymousreply 19October 17, 2025 10:25 AM

Yes, r16, that's why I wrote countries in plural.

by Anonymousreply 20October 17, 2025 11:15 AM

It’s up to FIFA, with input from the relevant federation(s), not any country’s authorities.

FIFY

by Anonymousreply 21October 17, 2025 11:23 AM

FIFA doesn't decide on the cities. The stadiums and cities have to fulfil certain FIFA standards, but it's not as though a country is awarded the World Cup and then FIFA decides which cities are going to be hosts. For example, if England were ever selected, FIFA might express its opinions and say it prefers Wembley for the final, but it's up to the local football authorities in partnership with the local and national government, who will have to provide security, transport, etc. to make the decision on which cities will host the matches. FIFA doesn't say "we want you to choose Manchester but not Birmingham".

by Anonymousreply 22October 17, 2025 12:42 PM

I hope we see an Olympics boycott a la 1980’s.

by Anonymousreply 23October 17, 2025 1:10 PM

Can't you just see Trump demanding to deliver the Olympic oath?

by Anonymousreply 24October 17, 2025 1:21 PM

R22 you’re mistaken. FIFA reserves the right of final approval.
