Why did Meryl take the lead role in It's Complicated (2009)?
Diane Keaton would've been a much better fit. Something's Gotta Give was a bigger hit and more critically praised. Meryl has always been awkward when it comes to comedy.
But this was in the era when Meryl was a giant role hog, having to take every lead role for women between 50-70.

This was in the era when Alec Baldwin wasn’t a murderer.

Because she was paid a lot. And she’s always first offer for roles in her age group. Her peers get the leftovers

Actually, you have that wrong. She was always at her best in comedies and awkward in her dramatic roles.

Id say it seemed fun to have 2 guys after you. She's in Only murders in the building with Steve Martin so maybe they wanted to work together. (Again, id say she mustve been a fan of this show.. I think she now does what she wants to do). Didn't Diane play Steve's wife in Father of the bride? I didn't love the 2 movies u mentioned Op. Did Meryl get to sing in Its Complcated? I think she'll take any role where she gets to sing..and have fun...fair play to her.

Always hated this movie. I found it pretentious.

What are you talking about?
They both were hit movies, and I've always thought you could have exchanged the leads (put Meryl in the other, and put Diane in the other) and audiences still would have liked both movies.
And Meryl is great at comedy, they really respected each other, so I give your post 0/10.

The director Nancy Meyers was very close to Keaton, so I presume either Keaton didn't have room on her schedule right then or the studio wanted Streep instead, thinking she'd be bigger box office.

She did it for the publicity, Christina.

I thought Meryl was very cute and serviceable in this film. Keaton had already played that role a dozen times--no one particularly needed to see her do it again.

How about the obvious answer?
The lead in It's Complicated wasn't offered to Diane Keaton BECAUSE SHE ALREADY PLAYED IT in Something's Gotta Give!
Nancy Meyers writes the same character in all her movies.

R13 is correct. I also can’t see the studio not insisting on Streep during this era as r9 speculates.
I was in college when this came out and all of us had bought into the hype and went to see it opening weekend and it was just ok.

I am so glad we have gone past Peak Streep.

Meryl has done comedy remarkably well. Not sure what OP is talking about.

This film was incredibly lackluster compared to Something’s Gotta Give. There was no chemistry anywhere.

The real question is why did she lower herself to make Ricki and the Flash. It's Complicated is a cute movie and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. Meryl and Martin are fun together. Baldwin is a smarmy pig playing a smarmy pig and John Krasinski is very funny. It's an easy watch.

Because, as the title tells you, silly; it's complicated.
