Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau had horrible posture

I watched the Odd Couple and couldn't believe how two men who were in their 40s at the time, could have such hunchbacks. Then I watched the Odd Couple II, both were in their 70s, Mathau is almost completely bent over and Lemmon looks like a shrunken turtle with his forward head posture.

Why didn't anyone tell them about this?

Lemmon was really hitting the sauce in the 70s so was probably too drunk to notice or care.

They needed to be Posture Pals!

R1 That explains why he suddenly couldn't act in his 70s.

Eh, R6 they buried the hatchet decades before he died.

I think the postures were intentional character choices by Lemmon and Matthau. based on observation of real life. Oscar obviously is supposed to be extremely self-neglected so bad posture goes with the character. As for Lemmon's Felix, I remember watching a scene with him pushing a shopping cart sort of hunched over and looking around in a weird way and was shocked at how much he resembled my own Felix-like dad.

I know Matthau's son Charlie. An asshole of the first degree. He's heavy into the cryonics cult and gives them $20k a month to save a spot for him when he dies. He lost his house in the Palisades fire and it appears it was leveraged to the nth degree so any money he had coming from insurance is gone.

R2 Melissa was born in 1964. That film looks like it was made well before she reached 2nd or 3rd grade. I was in the LA city schools then, and we were a little more up to date on our grade school fashion sense. 🤷🏻‍♂️

R6 What happened between Mathau and Streisand?

I know Jane Curtin said he was the worst guest host on SNL. She thought he was arrogant.

R8 They both have hunchbacks in all of their movies.

Tell us more about Charlie R9. Was it a bad upbringing?

by Anonymousreply 13October 16, 2025 9:22 PM

R13, it sounds like he had a perfectly happy childhood but he's the son of a movie star, albeit one who's forgotten today. He went to Harvard Westlake and then USC but he's essentially talentless. The house that burned down was his dad's house that he lived in. He always has weird projects but he never makes any money from them, so I'm not surprised he's pretty much broke.
