‘One Battle After Another’ to lose over $100 million dollars for studio

I guess not as many people as the media wants to make believe want to watch this.

It means nothing. It’s Warner Bros, the movie division is just one piece of the company’s total operations and Warner Bros had the biggest hits of the year so it’s a win for the studio regardless. $100 million loss is nothing to the tens of billions they make.

Movie studios aren’t independent anymore so flops don’t break them the way they used to.

by Anonymousreply 1October 15, 2025 5:42 PM

Lmaooo it’s not a win no matter what.

Will it hurt WB? No. But did it fail? Yes.

by Anonymousreply 2October 15, 2025 5:45 PM

People don’t realize today - Hollywood’s money is in the libraries of streaming on platforms.

Star Wars fans can complain about the new movies and TV shows all they want, it only makes them watch the old ones which is still a huge profit. Making a bad movie still triggers profit cause they turn off the new one and watch the old ones.

It’s a different world.

by Anonymousreply 3October 15, 2025 5:45 PM

R2 I’m not saying it’s a win, I’m saying it’s not a major setback. Warner Bros makes $39 billion a year. $100 million loss sucks but it’s a bad day, not a bad year.

by Anonymousreply 4October 15, 2025 5:46 PM

There are films that are doing well in movie theaters. It’s no longer necessary to see arthouse or Oscar bait films the weekend they come out. A lot of the Oscar films will be on streaming come the holidays when the award season really heats up.

by Anonymousreply 5October 15, 2025 5:48 PM

Isn’t it Anderson’s highest grossing film?

by Anonymousreply 6October 15, 2025 5:48 PM

So you're telling me Paul Thomas Anderson managed to 1) make a masterpiece that 2) also stuck it to David Zaslav in the process? My toes are curling!

by Anonymousreply 7October 15, 2025 5:58 PM

Leo is way past his sell by date and the movie is 3 hours long.

Why would anybody be surprised?

by Anonymousreply 8October 15, 2025 6:20 PM

Yup. It’s a massive flop.

PS this one cost as much to make and promote as Minecraft. WB put A LOT of money into this one.

by Anonymousreply 9October 15, 2025 6:21 PM

Huge blunder

by Anonymousreply 10October 15, 2025 6:21 PM

It checks off all the left wing boxes. The Academy will nominate it across the board.

by Anonymousreply 11October 15, 2025 6:36 PM

Hit piece from A24 and the Marty Supreme publicists.

by Anonymousreply 12October 15, 2025 7:21 PM

Right-wing types hate this movie because it reflects their ugly beliefs back at them. It's the Children of Men of 2025. Bret Easton Ellis hated it.

by Anonymousreply 13October 15, 2025 7:23 PM

R13, people don’t want to be lectured by Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 14October 15, 2025 9:19 PM

The movie doesn’t really lecture. It’s more of a satire.

by Anonymousreply 15October 15, 2025 10:08 PM

Read the first few lines of the plot from wikipedia and it was obvious to me that this would never be a hit. Left-wing militants, detained immigrants, racist general, etc. The right and middle aren't going to show up for that. And I think there's a subset of the left that just wants escapist entertainment right now given the horrors of the Trump admin.

That's not to say that it shouldn't have been made. It's probably a good film and I'll give it a watch sometime. But to give it that kind of budget and expect to make money? Not a good idea.

by Anonymousreply 16October 15, 2025 10:36 PM

OP, I tried to read your sentence ten times. I can’t.

by Anonymousreply 17October 16, 2025 12:57 AM

I don’t think WB cares because they have so much profit this year. They can write off the loss for OBAA and promote it for Oscars.

But I do think the model of expensive talent is a stupid gamble on what used to be $25 million movies. How much money do you need for a drama or comedy? That overspending aspect is ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 18October 16, 2025 1:11 AM

[quote]Isn’t it Anderson’s highest grossing film?

How much did his second highest grossing film make, a hundred dollars?

[quote]They can write off the loss for OBAA and promote it for Oscars.

Aside from technical awards, it will be lucky to get nominated for anything else.

It's a mega-flop. Movies can still make big money at the box office. This is clearly not one of them.

Keep trying, though.

by Anonymousreply 19October 16, 2025 1:24 AM

You are insufferable. It will be nominated in multiple categories including acting, best picture and best director.

by Anonymousreply 20October 16, 2025 1:28 AM

[QUOTE] Aside from technical awards, it will be lucky to get nominated for anything else.

Sweetie, you really don’t know what you’re talking about (as evidenced by your posts in this thread).

It’s almost guaranteed three Oscar nominations (DiCaprio, Penn, Taylor) with Chase Infiniti, Benecio, and Regina Hall in a second tier possibility zone in their respective categories. I would consider Penn to be the soft frontrunner for the win in Best Supporting Actor at this point.

Do try to keep up.

No movie has gotten more than five acting nominations, and the last time that happened was seventy years ago. Do you write for Gold Derby?

The independent crowd won big last year with Anora, a movie that everyone has pretty much forgotten about by now. This year they will go with a movie that people have actually seen. It's still early and there are other contenders. Whatever acting nominations this movie will get (if any) will be sparingly. And certainly not for all of them.

by Anonymousreply 22October 16, 2025 2:07 AM

DiCaprio should honestly be doing movies for free at this point. He's single and has no kids so it's not like he's got tons of mouths to feed.

by Anonymousreply 23October 16, 2025 2:13 AM

You just conveniently moved your goal post but, sure, R22.

by Anonymousreply 24October 16, 2025 2:41 AM

[quote] as the media wants

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 25October 16, 2025 2:59 AM

Having seen all of the contenders at this point I say awards season is OBAA’s to lose . It’s a super funny action movie with real characters, car chases, politics where it takes a genuine side ( on the correct side of history unlike some of the posters in this thread) — it’s smart and emotional and quotable and it’s three hours flies the fuck along. I’ve seen it four times now and it feels shorter every time I see it, Paul Thomas Anderson is well past due his coronation year like Nolan got with Oppenheimer, which this is superior to in every way. I think Hamnet is lovely and Jesse Buckley should get Best Actress but it’s a movie without a season narrative to sustain it. Grief and art are important bedfellows or something, sure. More timeless than timely. OBAA will genuinely feel like a fuck you to Trump. And those feel good.

by Anonymousreply 26October 16, 2025 3:11 AM

The only movies that made any money this year are Sinners and Weapons.

by Anonymousreply 27October 16, 2025 12:24 PM

[quote]politics where it takes a genuine side ( on the correct side of history unlike some of the posters in this thread)

Are we reduced to doing everyone who disses the flop is MAGA now?

Oscars come down to money. If they feel rewarding a huge financial flop is worth their investment, especially after last years poorly viewed Best Picture, then so be it.

There are other movies out there that have made money and have far more public interest in them. It just makes sense that they would be frontrunners this time around.

by Anonymousreply 28October 17, 2025 2:10 AM

Imagine Best Picture going to a movie that was beaten into the ground by a Taylor Swift flick!

Come on man, at least there's some dignity with honoring Sinners and Weapons!

by Anonymousreply 29October 17, 2025 2:12 AM

R22 Not quite—the last movie with five acting Oscar nominations was Network, 49 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 30October 17, 2025 2:24 AM

Let us hope that it gets shut out at the Oscars.

by Anonymousreply 31October 17, 2025 2:24 AM

OBAA is going to get at least 4 acting nominations and possibly 5. Leo, Sean Penn, Infiniti, Taylor and maybe Benecio . I think both Sean Penn and Teyana Taylor are locks for Oscars.

.

by Anonymousreply 32October 17, 2025 2:28 AM

I saw projections for After the Hunt are $2.8 million. That’s rough.

by Anonymousreply 33October 17, 2025 2:41 AM

Oppenheimer winning was like the only movie everyone knew in the last 15 years.

Oscars went from awarding Titanic, Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, Forrest Gump, Silence of the Lambs to awarding The Artist, Nomadland, CODA, Anora.

Winning Best Picture holds no weight anymore.

by Anonymousreply 34October 17, 2025 2:41 AM

I'd guess the AB demographic that movies aiming for a Best Picture Oscar generally want to pull, usually waits for them to be available to rent on TV. That is only a matter of weeks now, even for most hits. Most AB-demo movies don't suffer from being on a large flatscreen, you can use subtitles (important for the middle-aged and older), you can slot them into your busy schedule when you like, and you don't have the distractions of a movie theatre.

If people don't go to see a Superman or an Avatar it's definitely a flop because the spectacle is important, but for something that depends on a good script and performances, being able to focus is what's important. If nobody watches OBAA on streaming either, it's a big problem.

by Anonymousreply 35October 17, 2025 4:20 AM

I checked and a showing today for After the Hunt had ONE seat sold in a big SF theater. Just thought you should know.

by Anonymousreply 36October 17, 2025 11:13 PM

OP, it’s a film young and old who don’t have a broomstick up their ass, can and will get behind.

Here’s what so many conservatives don’t truly understand or believe:

Most people worldwide, and domestically, cannot stand them, & laugh at their ridiculous need for absolute power.

That stated, most people will absolutely get behind a film that gives a big “FUCK OFF” to that type of establishment.

This isn’t some sort of silly super-hero film. It’s an anti-hero film, where the underdog makes his last stand, & the majority of viewers will relate to this, even if they’re streaming it at home. ESPECIALLY when they’re streaming it at home, and names like Leo & Penn, will make sure that happens.

Having power via unscrupulous means, doesn’t equal popularity, nor the will of the people. People don’t naturally relate to bullies, as much as they relate to a middle aged father who’s fighting for his daughter, and an overall cause, which is exactly why this film will win over the hearts & minds of MANY, & take home all of the awards.

Life will imitate art in this instance.

People loathe bullies, and the underdog will almost always win the hearts & minds of the general public.
