Expecting a package from overseas via UPS? Well, there's bad news and bad news...

You're probably not going to get it and it's not being returned to the sender. So much competence from this administration. How much you wanna bet DOGE may have cut customs processors bac in February? Or that Noem/Lewandowski made cuts and diverted funds to her Storm Troopers?

[QUOTE]the Trump administration got rid of the de minimis exemption, where by packages valued under $800 could slide in without duties. Now there's a backlog as the government can't process all of this paperwork, leading to UPS just destroying packages

I dig fashion and buy some items from overseas- Many of these stores are paying the tarrifs and just increasing prices- You won't have any issues is this is the case. They will state it on the site- I have had zero issues- with the exception of one item being held in Customs for a month with DHL. The prices are still 20% lower than in the US (so far)

The ones where you have to pay the tarrifs (separately) prior to delivery are far more risky. I recommend FED EX/DHL anyway-- Most companies use those two outfits vs UPS-

Quiet as it's kept, the shipping companies are making fist fulls of dollars from the tariffs. I ship a lot of things to the US from abroad for work. Anytime something has to be processed through customs, there is a brokerage fee charged by the shipping company who acts as your broker with customs. Millions of packages were shipped under de minimis that never went through customs, now most of them do. And each one is at least a $17 brokerage fee. So although the employees have to do a lot more work, the companies are raking in millions they weren't before.

I pre-ordered a deluxe vinyl record box set from the UK a few months ago. I was told 3 weeks ago that the orders were received from the manufacturer and are being shipped out immediately. I got an email 2 weeks later that there is now a customs fee for an additional $22, which I understood I had to pay, which I reluctantly did. Apparently the so-called tariff exemptions that were supposed to be for media products (books, music, video) has not been implemented, so expect any and all imported items to be hit with tariffs. I'm still concerned whether I will receive my order or not. This will likely be the last time I am purchasing anything from outside the US for a long time.

I'm curtailing all purchases. We're in a slow motion recession to go along with the slow motion coup.

I'm trying to do the same, R7. It's going to be a hard candy Christmas.

I just had a katana shipped from Kyoto to the u.s. via UPS. it got here in only 7 days and the sword store I bought it from knew how to handle the paperwork and take care of the tariff so I got lucky. Two other sword stores claimed they couldn’t ship to the u.s. anymore because of tariffs and refused to do so. Crappy UPS did delay the initial delivery date by 2 days so it could get more information from the seller (whatever that was), but they always delay packages within the u.s., too.

Making America great again!

by Anonymousreply 11October 15, 2025 8:44 AM

R10 did you have any duties to pay at all? Most likely they declared a low value if any and sent as a “personal” item even though it was a purchase.

by Anonymousreply 12October 15, 2025 10:46 AM

UPS is also unprepared. Isn't applying tarrifs appropriately. This is going to hurt the company.

This couldn't come at the worse time for me. Just as I am planning to start selling on Etsy. Fuck your president What is the chance that the next president gets rid of this law, or whatever it is, and reverse it back to how it was before? Or at least lifts the value of the items for which tariffs need to be payed?
