Some distraction from sad Keaton news - who are the Addams and Munster families, really?

I grew up watching and loving both shows, but I don't know if it was ever explained who they really were. It's a good guess that Herman Munster was some kind of Frankenstein monster, but what about Lilly and Grandpa? Were they dead? WTF was Cousin It supposed to be? More importantly, do we think Thing and Lady Fingers ever...you know...fingered each other?

Well, neither of them have genitals, so if they did it was probably quite wholesome.

Grandpa was a vampire. Lily appeared to be a witch or vampire. Eddie was a werewolf.

The Addams family were just supposed to be odd.

The Addams family originated in a series of cartoons Charles Addams published in the New Yorker magazine. The Munsters were inspired by the classic Universal monster movies that were being marketed heavily to kids in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Don't overthink it.

My cousin is always under the opinion that Morticia is a woodnymph.

I didn't realize The Munsters was rated higher than The Addams Family. I thought it was the other way around

They are reflections on the golden eye.

R5, outside America The Addams Family was much more popular, especially in Australia.

Lily is a vampire. There are numerous references to her at some point not being alive, a state that seemed to be in flux.

It’s a family thing. In season one, Lily inherited some money, and there was a quick joke about having to be careful with the windfall because they couldn’t count on it again “the next time she dies.”

Herman - Frankenstein's Monster

Lily - A mashup of Bride of Frankenstein's Monster/Vampire

Grandpa - Vampire

Eddie - Werewolf

Marilyn - The odd one.

As a small child watching The Munsters I was always absolutely mystified by Marilyn.

"She's not pretty, like the rest of us." --Eddie's elementary-school essay about his family

I was only 12 and I had no idea the Addams family was based on anything. I figured the Munsters were based on old monster movies but I hadn't seen that many. Despite that, I thought the Addams Family was infinitely better than The Munsters. So much more sophisticated and clever. I thought it was so stupid that The Munsters had a "normal" daughter; that seemed like such a cop out to me.

I wish Charles Addams had lived to see the 90s Addams Family films. He died just three years before the first one was released. They were closer in spirit to his cartoons than the sitcom was.

In the Wednesday series, Thing is the hand of Isaac Night, a genius mad scientist. Morticia cut off his hand when he tried to kill Gomez.

As a kid, of course I didn't understand Grandpa was an elderly Jewish vampire.

In the opening sequence, Lily extends her hand to be kissed and he goes for her wrist vein. She pulls it away and scolds him with her eyes and he makes a hilarious "Eh, what can you do?" expression.

I assume Grandpa was Lily's father. Was it ever made clear?

by Anonymousreply 16October 11, 2025 11:55 PM

Wasn't Grandpa's name revealed to be "Sam Dracula" on the show?

by Anonymousreply 17October 12, 2025 12:48 AM

R13 Is that dude Nathan Lane's dad?

Good fucking Lord.

by Anonymousreply 19October 12, 2025 1:40 AM

I would have said that Grandpa was Dracula, not just a garden variety vampire.

by Anonymousreply 20October 12, 2025 8:06 AM

The Bryan Fuller reboot certainly went with that.

I know a few families whose members are at various stages of disfunction. There is always one member who has his or left together. I call them the "Marilyns" of their families.
